“The First 100 Years are the hardest” is part of an epigram attributed to playwright Wilson Minzer, some time early in the last century. I wonder whether the presidents of 25 Chicago area golf clubs were thinking that when they had the foresight to meet in Chicago and formally adopt the Charter for the Chicago District Golf Association on March 18, 1914. Since that time the CDGA has grown, both in membership (currently in excess of 80,000), in member clubs (now numbering 399 public, private, and clubs without real estate), in tournaments (60+ each year), and course rating (50+ each year). Thirty years after our founding, on December 29, 1944, the Chicago District Golf Charities was born, to assist returning veterans from the Second World War using the great game of golf. Now recognized as the Sunshine Through Golf Foundation, and with an expanded message of “Bringing Joy to People with Special Needs Through Golf,” we partner with groups such as RevelationGolf and IPGA professionals to bring golf to hundreds of special needs individuals and veterans each year. The Three-Hole Sunshine Course at Midwest Golf House is utilized daily each summer with camps, teaching, and games of golf by eligible players. Our turfgrass program’s research provides

an ongoing demonstration of alternative grass variations, and maintenance techniques in conjunction with area universities. In celebration of our centennial, we hosted a unique team competition for 100 players in July at Midlothian Country Club. Congratulations to Glen View Club for taking honors. Our tournament season concluded with 13 of the original founding clubs competing for the Centennial Founders Club Championship at Hinsdale in late October. Congratulations to Flossmoor Country Club on the victory. Best of success to both clubs when they defend in 2114. Capping off our 100-year celebration was our Centennial Dinner, held at the Palmer House in November, hosted by Dan Roan, and highlighted by a discussion of the state of the game with USGA President Tom O’Toole, and Executive Director Mike Davis. The CDGA and the STGF have grown significantly over the past 100 and 70 years, respectively. The first 100 years were indeed the hardest. We look forward to the next 100 years with drive, determination, and dedication. We hope you can join us as we continue our journey both supporting and growing the great game of golf in the Midwest.

As the CDGA celebrated its 100th year in 2014, the Sunshine Through Golf Foundation also commemorated its 70th anniversary. Originally founded to serve veterans returning from duty in World War II, the Foundation continues to assist servicemen and women today, while also broadening its mission to “bringing joy to people with special needs through golf.” The core of the Foundation’s work continues to be its camp program. In 2014, 92 camps were held in conjunction with local clubs and special recreation associations for more than 1,200 special needs athletes. The camps ranged from basic instructional sessions for beginners to Tournament Series events for advanced players with a goal of improving for the Special Olympics. Through a partnership with RevelationGolf, a not-for-profit that uses golf as a therapeutic tool for veterans, the Foundation continued to strengthen the connection with veterans that was the basis of its founding seven decades ago. With funding from the Foundation, RevelationGolf hosted: • Two Veterans Golf Days, one at Willow Glen Golf Club and another cohosted by Cog Hill Golf & Country Club and the Three-Hole Sunshine Course at Midwest Golf House • The 3rd Annual Veterans Golf Tournament at Cantigny Golf, which featured 30 disabled veterans competing in a nine-hole event • The Great Lakes Program at Great Lakes Naval Base, which included veterans and their families An annual highlight continues to be the Play With a Pro Day, which features professional golfers taking time away from their preparations for that week’s

event to play golf with Foundation athletes. This year, Champions Tour members Billy Andrade, Chip Beck, Bob Gilder, Morris Hatalsky and Gary Hallberg all came to Westmoreland Country Club during Encompass Championship week to impart some golf wisdom and play a few holes with excited participants. None of these programs would be possible without the Foundation’s fundraising efforts. The 2013 Holiday Mailing and 2014 one-time gifts combined to provide the Foundation with more than $87,000. Two events that raised large sums of money were the Sunshine Through Golf Foundation Outing and the Par-3 Golf Marathon. The outing, held at Exmoor Country Club for the first time, raised $75,000 in 2014, and has accumulated more than $1.7 million since its inception 14 years ago. In its sixth year, the Par3 Golf Marathon at Zigfield Troy Golf Course in Woodridge raised more than $60,000, as 18 golfers played 100 holes each. The 3rd CDGA Par-3 Championship, held at Lost Dunes Golf Club, garnered $10,000 for the Foundation, as eight participants individually raised funds prior to competing. The Chicago White Sox program continued to be a popular event among Foundation participants and supporters in its seventh year, as more than 100 tickets were sold and donated back to the Foundation for athletes to enjoy. An average of 40 clubs make up the Sunshine Club, whose annual contributions continue to be a major source of Foundation funding. This year, Evanston Golf Club and Prestwick Country Club joined the Sunshine Club.

2014 BOARD OF DIRECTORS | IN REMEMBRANCE

In his second season with the CDGA, Dr. Ed Nangle continued to grow the CDGA Turfgrass Program, with the program hitting several high marks in 2014. During a winter in which the region broke all-time records for low temperatures, the program filled its vacant research position with Ron Townsend from Ohio State University coming aboard as the Manager of Turfgrass Research.

including the Ohio Turfgrass Foundation and Show and the Wisconsin Turfgrass Research Day. Additionally, he was invited to serve as an associate editor for the Applied Turfgrass Science Journal and was published in the Agronomy Journal—a first for the CDGA. In all, the team of Nangle and Townsend combined for five professional trade articles in 2014—up from three in 2013. Dr. Nangle’s expertise was utilized to judge poster and oral presentation competitions at the annual American Society of Agronomy

Following the unprecedented winter, the program immediately mobilized with a communications campaign to clubs throughout the Chicago District outlining the scope of winter damage and providing a timeline for a return to turf health. The level of analysis and proactive nature of the communication was heralded by many clubs. As the season progressed, the number of course visits eclipsed the program’s all-time record—163 in all. In addition, 10 courses were visited in the Southern Illinois Golf Association. There were more than 40 disease diagnoses throughout the region, predominantly anthracnose on weakened Poa annua. On the research front, with the additional staff member, the number of projects was able to be increased from four in 2013 to 18 in 2014 with research income increasing more than 50%. Research ventures included a collaboration with 10 member clubs for an applied research project and also a global project with teams in Ireland and New Zealand. Dr. Nangle was asked to speak at nearly a dozen conferences in 2014,

meetings and to help local stadia, as the program’s reputation spread outside of the golf course. Turfgrass Field Day returned to the Three-Hole Sunshine Course at Midwest Golf House in 2014, with 65 professionals from throughout the Chicago District attending. Researchers from University of Illinois, University of Wisconsin and Ohio State University were showcased along with 10 research projects that were ongoing around Chicago. The Turfgrass Scouting Report, a weekly email outlining conditions within the Chicago District as well as industry best practices, was produced during 38 weeks in 2014, up from 32 in 2013. Readership for the Scouting Report was up 8% from the previous year. The turf staff also communicates with industry members from the around the globe via Twitter. Dr. Nangle manages the program’s Twitter account (@TurfResearch) with more than 1,800 followers. With the arrival of Townsend, a new researchfocused account was created in 2014 (@CDGAresearchmgr).

Course Rating/Education The CDGA provided 58 member clubs with new USGA Course Ratings in 2014; 44 clubs in the Chicago area and 14 in central Illinois. The Course Rating Committee continues to show its passion for providing this service to our clubs, as nearly all ratings were filled to capacity and a large percentage of ratings being oversubscribed. Along with the ratings, committee members and other Blue Coats continued their education by attending the annual Course Rating Seminar at Midwest Golf House in May. The Association partnered with the allied associations to put on another successful Club Leadership Conference at Medinah Country Club in early March. More than 50 private clubs were represented by 200 individual attendees at the event, which focuses on challenges faced by private clubs in the areas of membership, finance, clubhouse, golf and greens. On the public golf side, the CDGA hosted the Public Golf Round Table at Midwest Golf House in October. The annual event brings together course managers, owners and operators from public facilities to discuss the challenges they face and best practices in the current golf landscape. A lively discussion was had amongst nearly 80 public golf course officials--a high water mark in attendance for the event which has been conducted for more than a decade. A total of eight Rules of Golf workshops were conducted by the CDGA in 2014, both open to the public and for member clubs. Three basic Rules of Golf workshops were conducted in March, along with four member club workshops and a seminar on rules for the Chicago Women’s District Golf Association. Attendance across all CDGA workshops was nearly 300 individuals.

The Association’s centennial was a primary focal point for communications in 2014, with the history of the CDGA taking center stage in all of the CDGA’s communications platforms. Each issue of Chicago District Golfer magazine focused on a 20-year segment of Association history and included features on the founding, innovators throughout CDGA history and the three executive directors in Association history. The Chicago District Golfer television show focused on the tournament history of the CDGA and founding among its historical features. CDGA.org/100 served as a compilation website of historical information for the Association. Growth of usage of the My CDGA smartphone app reached 18,000 members in 2014, representing more than 20% of the membership. By utilizing the app, members have their membership cards with them at all times on their phone, allowing the Association to be more environmentally friendly by not printing paper cards and welcome letters (both are sent electronically to members with the app). The Association’s Twitter following (@CDGAGolf) grew nearly 40% in 2014, with more than 1,400, while the Association Facebook page’s audience expanded by 12% to 1,250. The CDGA YouTube page continues to serve as a resource for past TV episodes, as well as coverage of Championships. Casey Richards, an Indiana University alum and recent graduate from grad school at Illinois State University, joined the staff in April as Manager of Communications. Richards’ primary

duties consist of managing the Association’s mass email communication programs, creating content for use on CDGA. org and social media. CDGA Senior Director of Communications Matt Baylor was a presenter at the 2014 International Association of Golf Administrators Conference, providing peers from around the world with best practices on Association Branding and Public Relations Image.

After declining from all-time highs in revenue last year, the corporate partnership program bounced back in 2014 to produce its second-highest total annual revenues in history. Revenues advanced 10% over 2013, buoyed by growth in the corporate partner category (partners spending $25,000 or more with the Association) and the continued growth of the program’s national sales initiatives, which began in 2012. The national program, in just its third season, doubled revenues from 2013. Part of this season’s turnaround included bringing eight new marketing partners into the fold. These partners included the 2015 U.S. Amateur Championship, Chicagoland Acura Dealers, Cool Clubs, Destination Kohler, GolfTEC, the John Deere Classic, PGA Tour Superstore and Potawatomi Hotel and Casino. These partners joined the CDGA in a variety of programs including web marketing, targeted emails and gatefold advertisements as part of Chicago District Golfer magazine. This year, the Association added more advertising inventory to CDGA.org, as well as the My CDGA mobile app, allowing for more partners to be featured in more places. In addition, the CDGA continues to work with prospective advertisers to customtailor a marketing plan to the individual partner’s needs in an effort to maximize the benefits both for the Association and the corporate partner. Andrew Louthain, senior director of corporate partnerships, presented at the 2014 International Association of Golf Administrators Conference on Developing Partnerships and Alternative Revenue Streams.

» MEMBERSHIP & COMPE TITIONS DEPARTMENT The Chicago District Golf Association celebrated its 100th year by maintaining its membership and revered tournament slate, while also adding two events to help commemorate the centennial. Despite the unseasonably cold weather well into April and May, individual membership remained steady at about 81,000 golfers in 2014. Club membership numbers in 2014 stayed the exact same as 2013, with 399 member clubs. There were a total of 2,330 entries into CDGA events in 2014, accounting for nearly 97% of all possible tournament spots. The tournament season, which ran from April through Oct., consisted of 14 CDGA-sponsored Championships and numerous qualifiers for USGA events. As part of the Association’s yearlong centennial celebration, both the Centennial Team Championship and Centennial Founders Club Championship were created as one-time events. The Centennial Team Championship featured 50 pairs competing in a unique flighted event at Midlothian Country Club. The tournament season concluded with the Centennial Founders Club Championship at Hinsdale Golf Club, where fourperson teams from 13 of the CDGA’s founding clubs took part in a stableford competition. As for the traditional events, another great group of champions was crowned in 2014. Illinois State University golfer and Peoria-native Jordan Fahel won the 95th CDGA Amateur Championship at Hinsdale Golf Club with a 2 and 1 victory over Winnetka’s Blake Johnson, who made his second-consecutive

championship match. In the 13th CDGA Senior Amateur Championship, Taylorville’s Dave Ryan topped Tom Miler of Kewanee 4 and 3 to claim his first title in the event. All three major state events also saw first-time winners. Naperville’s Raymond Knoll, a University of Iowa golfer, emerged victorious after four playoff holes with Northbrook’s Nick Hardy in the 84th Illinois State Amateur Championship at Cantigny Golf. Andrew Price of Lake Bluff posted a wire-to-wire victory in the 22nd Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship at Flossmoor Country Club, while Tremont’s Ed Whitaker won the 28th Illinois State Senior Amateur Championship at Royal Country Club of Long Grove by four strokes. At 18 years old, Arlington Heights native Doug Ghim became the youngest player ever to win the CDGA Player of the Year award. Despite not playing in any CDGA-sponsored events, Ghim, currently a freshman golfer at the University of Texas, won the award due in large part to his runner-up finish at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Ghim topped some of the nation’s best amateurs at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kan., en route to the championship match, where he fell to Byron Meth in the first playoff hole. Finishing just behind Ghim in the Player of the Year race, but still winning his record fifth CDGA Senior Player of the Year award, was the 60-year-old Ryan. In addition to his CDGA Senior Am win, Ryan posted solid results in the State Mid-Am (T3) and Illinois Senior Open (2), while also qualifying for match play at the CDGA Am.
