I have read that if we focus on the really important things in life, we will run out of golf balls. Accounting for only the four largest golf ball manufacturers, 660 million golf balls were made in 2012. Factoring in all the other manufacturers, there are probably close to a billion golf balls constructed annually. Additionally, according to the internet, these companies have actually increased their capacity to be able to make even more. That’s good food for thought! My initial reaction is, these golf ball company CEOs must think that interest in golf is on the rise again. Truthfully, interest in golf likely never dips—our lives and the world around us have just changed, which, in turn, has changed the landscape within the game.

Following the economic downturn in 2008, the CDGA saw membership numbers drop nearly 10% from 2008 to 2011, as these external factors forced a retraction within our industry. Over the past two years, the market—at least in the Midwest—has stabilized as we have seen modest increases in membership. Since the downturn, the average membership numbers for state and regional golf associations have decreased 13.1%, while the CDGA has only experienced a 7% decline. The question is: why do we as an association appear more stable than others? I would assert it is because we, as an association, took a broader approach a few years ago. We took an approach that we wanted to be more than just an association that provides tournaments, handicap indexes, and course ratings for its members. We decided to be a “one-stop shopping” experience for all our member and member club needs. The list of services we provide for the golfers and clubs is quite impressive. And each year, we work even harder in an effort to bring better value to those existing services.

I have enjoyed the privilege of being a part of this continuing process. The CDGA is an organization with an enormous base of knowledge vested in its Blue Coats. This knowledge base is being tapped to make the organization even more viable for the future. Thank you to the Blue Coats for all of your time and thoughts as we continue our efforts to improve. For the record, I only go through roughly two dozen golf balls each year. I lose about half of them, while the rest end up in a shag bag. This makes me wonder, where do the other 999,999,976 other new golf balls end up every year?

In advance of its 70th anniversary in 2014, the Sunshine Through Golf Foundation continues to be a shining part of the Chicago District Golf Association. As the CDGA’s official charity, the Foundation works towards the mission of bringing joy to people with special needs through the game of golf. This year, the Foundation’s camp program held steady with 92 camps held throughout the summer, touching the lives of more than 1,200 special needs athletes. In addition to the camps, four Tournament Series events were conducted to help more advanced campers hone their golf skills in advance of competitions such as the Special Olympics Illinois State Tournament. The Sunshine camp program would not be possible without the volunteerism of the CDGA Blue Coats, personnel from various regional special recreation associations (SRAs), and the generosity of facility use and time of the golf professionals at those clubs hosting Sunshine camps. In 2013, 30 CDGA Blue Coats volunteered at camps which benefitted 40 SRAs. Camps were held at 50 golf facilities in the region with their golf professionals participating.

Six lucky Sunshine campers had the opportunity to participate in the annual Play With a Pro Day, held at Knollwood Club during BMW Championship week. Reigning champion of the PGA Championship Jason Dufner, three-time

Illinois State Amateur and two-time PGA Tour winner D.A. Points, and touring professional Chris Smith played a few holes with groups of athletes on a funfilled day for all involved. From a fundraising perspective, the annual golf outing and golf marathon continued to be the Foundation’s bread and butter fundraising events. Both the 13th annual Golf Outing, at Knollwood Club this year, and the 5th annual Golf Marathon at Zigfield Troy Golf, netted more than $70,000 each for the Foundation. In its second season, the Foundation’s Par-3 Championship continued to gain traction, bringing in more than $16,000. The event, contested at Lost Dunes Golf Club, will be revamped in 2014 and conducted by the CDGA, with all proceeds of the event benefitting the Foundation. Going back to its roots as a charity originally established to assist wounded warriors from the second World War, the Foundation expanded its partnership with RevelationGolf in 2013. RevelationGolf is a not-for-profit which works with disabled veterans utilizing golf as a therapeutic tool. In 2013, RevelationGolf held more than 100 clinics for disabled vets, with the vast majority being conducted on the Three-Hole Sunshine Course at Midwest Golf House. The organization also had a pair of Veterans Golf Days, one at Willow Glen and the other at Cog Hill and Midwest Golf House, contested the second annual Veterans Tournament at Cantigny Golf and advanced the education of PGA teaching professionals with a pair of clinics focusing on teaching golfers with physical disabilities. Four new clubs joined The Sunshine Club (italicized at right), bringing the total number of members to 40 clubs. These clubs continue their support of the Foundation as part of this annual giving program with contributions on a per member basis. The program is a major source of funding for the camp program and other services of the Foundation.

CDGA Turfgrass Program

Dr. Ed Nangle took over as Director of Turfgrass Programs in May after the departure of Dr. Derek Settle following a period of extreme success in research, diagnosis and name recognition for the CDGA Turfgrass Program at a national and international level. The focus was on how to increase this success and prestige while also providing continuity as if the service provided had not missed a step.

More than 100 different courses were visited in 2013, with nearly 150 total “house calls” being conducted by the turf doctor, including assistance at several tournaments in the area. Field diagnosis was made on approximately 20 different issues, including disease, insect and abiotic stresses, such as shade, irrigation and fertility issues. The program continued to bolster its reputation by participating in research projects initiated with Purdue University and Ohio State University. Year after year, the turf staff continues to work and expand in the area of research for regional golf course superintendents, conducting studies on par with major universities from across the country. In addition to the research, the CDGA Turfgrass Program remained active in a collegiate community by participating in research field days at Michigan State University, Ohio State, Purdue, the University of Illinois and the University of Wisconsin. Beyond scholarly research, the program entered into an international research project with the New Zealand Sports Turf Research Institute and private

researcher Dr. John Dempsey from Ireland. The purpose of the research focuses upon poa bent management strategies. This year, the program garnered around $30,000 in funds for research projects. The focus of these studies was to analyze new fungicides, the use of environmentally-friendly biosolids for fertilizer and winter control products. In all, the CDGA completed four research projects in 2013, with two more currently ongoing. The Association’s ability to

conduct research should expand in the future with the vacated Manager of Turf Research position expected to be filled in early 2014. Dr. Nangle has been invited to speak at several events over the offseason, including a trio of superintendent education events and the winter turf conferences in Illinois, Wisconsin and Ohio. Dr. Nangle has also been published personally or collaboratively in five peer-reviewed journal articles this year, on topics including nematodes, seed germination and fertility. He also jointly completed the submission of a patent with three other individuals for Anthocyanin Elicitation. The program produced and distributed 23 scouting reports this season via email to superintendents, industry personnel and subscribers. The reports focused on information regarding climate, disease, weeds, insects and management strategies, with the purpose being to assist course superintendents through day-to-day processes with insights on best practices.

Course Rating/Education Forty-seven CDGA member clubs received new course ratings in 2013, 34 clubs in the Chicago area and 13 in central Illinois. Participation was at or near capacity at each rating, with many ratings being oversubscribed due to the efforts of the Blue Coats and members of the course rating committee. Along with the ratings, the board and committee members came out in force to attend an annual USGA Course Rating Seminar at Midwest Golf House in May. The year marks the end of an era for the course rating committee, as Lawrence Schweik, retires from the post after serving more than a decade in that capacity. From an education perspective, the Association continues to hold the Club Leadership Conference in conjunction with other allied associations. The conference, held in March at Medinah Country Club, saw more than 200 individual attendees representing 50 private clubs from the Chicago District. The annual conference focuses on issues private clubs face in the areas of membership, finance, clubhouse, golf and greens. During the preseason, the Association hosted seven Rules of Golf workshops, both open to the public and for member clubs. Three basic Rules of Golf workshops were conducted in March, along with three member club workshops and a seminar on rules for the Chicago Women’s District Golf Association. Attendance across all seven workshops was nearly 250 individuals. In the fall, the CDGA hosted its annual Public Golf Round Table at Midwest Golf House. The event brings together course managers, owners and operators from public facilities to discuss the challenges they face and best practices in the current golf landscape. A total of 40 representatives attended the event.

» COMMUNIC ATIONS DEPARTMENT

| DEPARTMENTS | PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE | FOUNDATION FOCUS

It was a challenging, yet successful, year in 2013 in communications for the CDGA as the Association continues to search for new ways to tell its story and communicate its value to golfers. Chicago District Golfer magazine continued to find its stride with timely features and lifestyle pieces delivered monthly during the season to members’ homes. Two features this year, “Golf’s Dream Day,” written by Matt Baylor in the August issue, and “Spare No Expense,” written by Len Ziehm in the September issue, generated more positive feedback to the staff than any other features published in the past five years. The third season of the Chicago District Golfer television show saw the production of a seventh episode, airing in November, focusing on travel and offseason tips. The other six episodes aired monthly between April and September on Comcast SportsNet Chicago. A total of 130,000 viewers caught one of the first six episodes (Nielsen data for the November/ December airings is not yet available). The My CDGA smartphone app is in use by more than 16,000 members who have downloaded the app onto more than 20,000 devices. Advertising was added to the app this year in order to capture the growing number of members utilizing the app as the portal to their CDGA membership. Socially, the Association’s following continues to expand, with more than 1,000 followers of @CDGAGolf on Twitter and more than 1,100 individuals choosing to connect with the CDGA

on Facebook. The CDGA Facebook page has expanded its fanbase by more than 20% this year, while the Association’s Twitter following grew 56% in 2013. The CDGA continues to maintain a presence on LinkedIn and YouTube and also expanded to add a Flickr account in 2013, showcasing photography by staff at various Association and Foundation events. The communications staff underwent a transition this year, with the manager of communications role being vacated at the beginning of the year. Jen Beshansky, a recent Northern Illinois University graduate, joined the CDGA in that capacity in June.

The 2013 season was rewarding for the Association in terms of corporate partnerships, as many corporate partners renewed deals with the Association, and four new partners entered into agreements. This year’s revenues declined slightly from all-time highs in 2012, but still managed the second-highest total in the history of the program. Partners have a variety of advertising options available to them throughout the CDGA’s communications vehicles, as well as the opportunity to present CDGA members with exclusive offers, which increase the value of Association membership. This year, on top of the traditional inventory of the magazine, television show, E-Revisions and website, the CDGA added a set of “Fairway Getaways” emails. These emails focused on special offers from CDGA member clubs and clubs within the region during the season and on travel destinations in the offseason. Fantasy Golf continued to grow this year, another opportunity for sponsors to engage with members. More than 1,200 members participated in at least one event, with the opportunity to win a prize by finishing in the top 10 or by winning a random participant draw. In addition, those participating throughout the season had an opportunity to win a season-long prize, a trip to Erin Hills.

» MEMBERSHIP & COMPE TITIONS DEPAR TMENT The 99th year of the Chicago District Golf Association was a successful year from both a membership and competition perspective as the Association witnessed an increase in membership, while tournament registrations held steady. Association membership in 2013 topped 81,000 golfers, up slightly over the 2012 numbers. The number of CDGA member clubs stood at 399 at the end of the season. From a competition perspective, more than 2,000 individuals entered CDGA-sponsored events in 2013, with 2,443 total tournament entries submitted for the calendar, which runs from April through September. The Better Ball of Pairs series continued to show its popularity with 659 teams entering eight series events in an attempt to earn the right to advance to the annual series championship in September. A move to July for the Illinois State Amateur Championship saw a reduction in entries, down to 608 from more than 700 in 2012. The Association’s championship, the CDGA Amateur, had 312 entries for its 94th edition. New to the calendar in 2013 was the CDGA Super Senior Amateur Championship, which garnered 69 entries in its inaugural season. The 18-hole championship is played in gross and net flights, with CDGA members 65 years of age and older eligible to compete. In competition, recent NIU grad Bryce Emory won the 94th CDGA Amateur Championship, defeating Blake Johnson, 2 and 1 in the 36-hole final match at Edgewood Valley Country Club. Emory is a CDGA member at Aurora Country Club. Tom Miler,

a member at Kewanee Dunes, won the CDGA Senior Amateur Championship for a record third time, besting Dave Ryan at Elgin Country Club. In state competitions, Tee-K Kelly, a Wheaton native and member of the Ohio State University golf team, carded four birdies in the final 10 holes to win the 83rd Illinois State Amateur Championship at Aldeen Golf Club. Todd Mitchell of Bloomington extended his own record number of victories in the Illinois State Mid-Amateur, winning for the fourth time in the past six years. At the Illinois State Senior Amateur, Dave Ryan of Taylorville won by eight strokes, denying Tom Miler’s bid to become the first three-time winner in that event. With a victory in the State Mid-Am, a top-5 finish at the State Amateur and a quarterfinal appearance at the U.S. MidAm, Todd Mitchell easily locked up both the CDGA Player of the Year and Central Illinois Player of the Year awards. It was a record-tying third CDGA award for Mitchell, equalling the trio Rich Dukelow earned in 1996, ‘99 and 2001. The Central Illinois award extended Mitchell’s record haul to eight; no other player has won that award more than three times. On the strength of a U.S. Mid-Am appearance, a victory in the State Senior Am and runner-up finish at the CDGA Senior, Dave Ryan added a fourth CDGA Senior Player of the Year award to his trophy case. Ryan has won the award in all but one year of his senior eligibility. The fourth award breaks a tie with Joel Hirsch for the most Senior POY awards of all time.

Edward O. Miller Mr. Edward Miller, a CDGA Past President from Rolling Green Country Club, passed away in November. Mr. Miller served as a Blue Coat for 13 years. During his tenure, he held the office of president (1995-97), course rating committee chairman and made contributions to the Foundation.

» IN MEMORIAM: C ARL HOPPHAN (1932-2013) Carl Hopphan, Illinois Golf Hall of Fame member and Sunshine Through Golf Foundation employee, passed away in May at the age of 80. After a hall of fame career as a golf course superintendent at Aurora Country Club and Evanston Golf Club, Hopphan officially joined the Foundation staff in 2006 as a consultant, assisting with both the fundraising for and upkeep of the Three-Hole Sunshine Course at Midwest Golf House. Though he only worked at Midwest Golf House for seven years, throughout his time as a superintendent, he was active with the CDGA and was one of the driving forces in the creation of the CDGA Turfgrass Program in the mid-1980s. Hopphan also was involved in the design and construction of the Sunshine Course in 2003. Because of his tireless efforts, he received the CDGA’s highest honor that year when he was presented with the Association’s Distinguished Service Award. Working 43 years as a superintendent, Hopphan also garnered many awards and accolades, including serving as President of both the Midwest Association of Golf Course Superintendents and Chicagoland Association of Golf Course Superintendents. In addition to the CDGA DSA honor,

Hopphan also received the same honor from the Illinois Turfgrass Foundation. He spent more than half a century as a member of both the regional and national golf course superintendent associations. Hopphan dedicated his life to the game of golf, first bringing more enjoyment to golfers by innovative greenkeeping methods, ensuring that golfers for decades had the best possible turf to play the game. Over the past decade, his focus changed, working to bring joy to special needs individuals, both by his volunteerism and dedication to the Sunshine Through Golf Foundation camp program, and by his tireless efforts to fundraise and promote the Foundation--even competing in the organization’s 100-hole golf marathon in 2011 at the ripe young age of 78. His contributions to the Association, the Foundation and the game of golf will be missed. In honor of Hopphan’s dedication to the game and the Sunshine Through Golf Foundation, an oak tree was planted next to the first tee of the Three-Hole Sunshine Course at Midwest Golf House following his passing. Next spring, a bench will be erected next to the tree along with a plaque of remembrance.
