VALUE AT THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA SALE

A

ugust 10 marks the 18th consecutive renewal of the CTBA-hosted Northern California Yearling & Horses of Racing Age Sale. Over the years this sale has provided a service for California breeders and a successful outlet for consignors. Also, with the shrinking inventory of horses at California tracks, it is important to note that a very high percentage of horses that go through the sales ring at

this venue have populated the feld sizes at Golden Gate Fields and the fairs, and several have competed successfully in Southern California as well. We are pleased with this year’s catalog and the support from breeders and consignors located throughout the state. Trough the years this sale has proved to ofer tremendous value as purchasers have realized signifcant profts both with racing and pinhooking. We have similar— if

BURNS became still another stakes winner for California sire Unusual Heat when he captured the $150,000 La Jolla Handicap (G2T) at 11⁄16 miles on the turf at Del Mar Aug. 13, 2011. With Patrick Valenzuela aboard, California-bred Burns raced fourth of six early. A hole opened in midstretch, and Burns courageously galloped through on the rail to grab the victory by a neck over Lil Bit O’Fun, who was closing on the outside. The victory was especially sweet because the connections were all involved with Unusual Heat. Barry Abrams trained both horses for partnerships that included the Auerbach family. Madeline Auerbach, David Abrams (Barry’s brother), and Sonny Pais bred Burns from the Afternoon Deelites mare Little Hottie, and Auerbach owned him with Pais.

One of those was homebred GOWRAN GREEN, a 1968 daughter of Envoy—Clonee, by Democratic. Gowran Green captured the 11⁄16-mile San Clemente Stakes at Del Mar Aug. 11, 1971, just eight days after an early victory over the Del Mar turf course. Jockey Rudy Rosales let the flly lag early while saving ground. She advanced along the inside to take charge in the stretch and defeat At Twilight by a half-length in 1:43 4⁄5. Gordon Campbell, who also trained Flying Paster, conditioned Gowran Green for Ridder. A Big Tank You Chelsea Fishenfeld, the recipient of the 2021 California Toroughbred Foundation’s scholarship for a veterinary student at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, sent the following thank you to the Foundation: “Huge thanks to the California Toroughbred Foundation. “I am beyond grateful for the scholarship that they have provided me, as it has helped keep the stressful costs of fourth-year travel to a minimum. “I can’t wait to continue my pursuit of equine medicine, meet wonderful people, and learn something new every day. “Tis career path has been busy, fun, and fulflling from the start. Trough riding, working as an ambulatory tech, shadowing my farrier, and several externships, I have learned to love all aspects of the horse. Toroughbred horses were a large part of the foundation of my horsemanship, and I can’t wait to be able to treat them as their doctor. “I plan on doing an equine internship, followed by pursuing ambulatory practice with acute interests in both sports medicine and internal medicine. I appreciate so much the knowledge and resources provided to me by various horse enthusiasts and DVMs, and I hope to make all of my mentors and the foundation proud as I continue my journey in equine medicine.”

2020 TOBA State Breeder of the Year for California

George Krikorian MOVIE THEATER MOGUL FINDS THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF

H

He has been rewarded with a series of top runners as an owner and has reached a pinnacle in breeding with his recognition by the Toroughbred Owners and Breeders Association as the California Breeder of the Year for 2020. With a 50-strong band of broodmares divided between California and Kentucky, Krikorian is a commercial breeder whose intent is to sell the horses he breeds at auction. One George Krikorian that didn’t get away, however, is Mucho Unusual (Mucho Macho Man—Not Unusual, by Unusual Heat), whom Krikorian bred and raced in California. A 4-year-old in 2020, Mucho Unusual won the 10-furlong Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1T) at Santa Anita in September and added the Dec. 27 Robert J. Frankel Stakes (G3T) over nine furlongs to her laurels. With placings in the Gamely Stakes (G1T) and Buena Vista Stakes (G2T) as well, Mucho Unusual racked up a line of 7-2-0-3 and earnings of $317,333 for the season. For these accomplishments, she was named California-bred Horse of the Year for 2020 and was further honored as California’s champion older female and champion turf horse. Krikorian was not fnished on the year, however. Having sent the Into Mischief mare Perched to his stallion Mr. Big, Krikorian bred Big Fish, who was a 2-year-old gelding in 2020. Racing for Legacy Ranch, Big Fish broke his maiden at Del Mar in August and returned less than three weeks later to score in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes. Big Fish earned the title of Cal-bred co-champion 2-year-old male for the season, in which he picked up $119,018 in purses. Big Fish has returned in 2021 to win the Cal Cup Derby. Big Sweep is another product of Krikorian’s breeding program. Another son of Mr. Big, out of the City Zip mare Misszippityslewda, Big Sweep, a 3-year-old flly in 2020, broke her maiden 20

aving been exposed to San Diego before shipping out to Vietnam while in the military, New Hampshire native George Krikorian decided to make California his adopted home when his hitch was over. Successful in real estate and with his self-named chain of movie theaters, Krikorian, the son of a New England trainer, decided to enter the world of Toroughbreds as an owner and breeder.

and then scored victories in the Echo Eddie Stakes at Santa Anita and the Fleet Treat Stakes at Del Mar, earning $212,750 on the year for owners Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal. Mr. Big, owned and raced by Krikorian, is a son of Dynaformer who enjoyed just a modest race career with two victories. However, Krikorian decided to breed mares to him, and the stallion began siring winners from modest stock. He has since turned into a highly productive stallion in the Golden State while standing at Rancho Temescal. “Te Cal-bred program is very lucrative, and I enjoy taking part in it and supporting California breeding and racing,” Krikorian said. “We had a great year in regard to these stakes wins. I plan the matings for all my mares, and while I’m no pedigree expert, I’m always trying to fnd the best matches for them. We’ve had some good luck.” Krikorian enjoyed another huge victory as a breeder in 2020. Hollywood Story, Krikorian’s frst grade 1 winner as an owner when she won the Hollywood Starlet Stakes, is now a broodmare at his Starwood Farm near Lexington, Ky. Sent to Honor Code, Hollywood Story produced a ridgling who sold to CRK Stable for $850,000 as a yearling. Named Honor A.P., he won the 2020 Santa Anita Derby (G1) and ran fourth in the Kentucky Derby (G1). Krikorian also bred the Paynter flly Ring Leader, who, as a 3-year-old won the 2020 Dixie Belle Stakes at Oaklawn Park. Krikorian has just opened LexLive, an entertainment complex with 10 theater screens, 14 bowling alleys, and a sports bar in downtown Lexington, and is opening a similar facility in Menifee, Calif.

A two-time Eclipse Award winner as Horse of the Year in 2014 and 2016, the Lucky Pulpit stallion has been well-supported by breeders in Kentucky, Chile, and Japan. He has covered full books of mares during each Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere season he has been in service since 2017. Whether communicated in English, Spanish, or Japanese, it is clear that the 2014 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner is making his mark as a young sire. His initial runners, now 3 years old, have won races in the United States, Canada, France, Russia, and Puerto Rico, while his frst South American foal crop has yielded a dozen 2-year-old winners to date. en years after his four feet white hooves frst touched the ground at the Harris Farms nursery in California’s Central Valley, four years after he retired from racing competition as the highest-earning Toroughbred runner in North American history with a career bankroll of $14,752,650, and nearly two years after it was announced he had been sold for stallion duties in Japan, world traveler and equine icon California Chrome will be represented for the frst time by his own California-bred ofspring at auction venues. He will have yearlings at sales in his home state and in Washington over the next two months.

Trough July 18, 2021, California Chrome has sired 49 international winners and fve North American black-type horses, led by his grade 1-placed daughter Cilla, a $188,500-earner and multiple stakes winner out of Sittin At the Bar, a three-time Louisiana-bred state champion racemare. It is perhaps with his regionally bred foals such as Cilla that “Chrome” — a working-class hero type who had to compete for the most upper-crust mares in the U.S. against the likes of blue-blooded Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify — might ultimately shine the brightest. tion-only initiative created in late 2018 by California Toroughbred Breeders Association member Perry Martin and his late wife, Denise, Toroughbred owners on the West Coast will soon have the opportunity to purchase registered Cal-bred colts and fllies by the most successful California-bred racehorse in history. As early as next year, these Kentucky-sired youngsters will be eligible to compete in restricted state-bred races, a factor that should entice regional buyers to take a closer look at them during the upcoming sales. “Our goal for the foal-share program was to attract exceptional mares to Chrome for his third year standing in Kentucky, when his ‘new sire novelty’ would naturally wear of,” said Martin, the majority shareholder in California Chrome’s former U.S. stallion syndicate.

“Tapping the West Coast, Chrome’s home where he was a legend, just made sense.” Highly credentialed mares from California, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, and Nevada were recruited for the onceof program, and only the most select mares were approved for breeding to California Chrome in 2019. “We were amazed by the quality of mares we were able to attract for this program, and really pleased to see the quality of the foals who were produced,” Martin reported. Of the 12 outstanding mares whose 2021 yearlings will now be ofered at three upcoming West Coast auctions, nearly all are stakes performers or stakes producers. Washington Horse of the Year Baja Sur out of 2018 Washington Broodmare of the Year Premo Copy, is a flly bred in California. Tim Floyd’s Washington-based Warlock Stables bred the youngster in partnership with Martin Racing. “Te California Chrome Foal Share Program was pretty easy to sell pieces of mares to partners and include them in this exciting venture,” Floyd said. “It is a lot of fun for our partners to see catalog page updates and physical growth of the babies.” Checkmate Toroughbreds ofers two California Chrome yearlings in its 2021 Fasig-Tipton draft: a colt out of Special Smoke and a flly out of Summers Peace. Special Smoke, a Nevada transplant by Free House owned by Daniel Preiss, Dave Foran, and Chris Province, has produced the earners of a collective $762,243, led by 2015 Cal-bred champion 2-year-old male Smokey Image, a grade 3-placed, fve-time stakes winner. Summers Peace, an Emerald Downs stakes winner by Orientate, shipped from owner Lisa Wall’s Arizona farm to participate in the foal share program. Her resulting California Chrome flly has been named Lightning Hope. With three California Chrome yearlings being prepped for auction under his watch, Barton Toroughbreds farm manager Kevin Dickson encapsulated the spirit of this team approach to breeding and selling Toroughbreds in the Golden State. “California Chrome was so much fun to watch in his heyday,” Dickson said. “He really kept Cal-breds at the forefront during his amazing campaign, and we are honored to be co-breeders with Martin Racing of some of his frst Calbred ofspring to be ofered for sale. We intentionally spread our Chrome yearlings out to separate venues in order to ofer them to various racing markets. “We were proud to be approached by Martin Racing to participate with a few of our good mares to get Cal-bred Chromes on the ground,” Dickson continued. “Now it’s up to these babies to shine like Chrome and represent their prodigious bloodlines in the sales ring and at the racetrack.”

takes win on synthetic? Check. Turf? Check. And dirt? Also check.

I’m So Anna has now accomplished all three, a considerable feat. Te daughter of Fast Anna—So So Fast, by Jet West, took the $176,000 Fleet Treat Stakes at Del Mar July 23, outrunning a good group of California-bred or California-sired sophomore fllies. With four wins on three surfaces from fve furlongs to a mile, I’m So Anna has become a whirlwind force on the California circuit. A homebred for Kevin and Kim Nish’s KMN Racing, I’m So Anna was the fourth choice in a feld of eight in the Fleet Treat. Te dark bay flly sat just of the early pace set by Teddy’s Barino, then took over at

the half-mile marker and challenged the feld to come after her. I’m So Anna drew away to score by a length under Kyle Frey, stopping the clock in 1:24.34 for seven furlongs. Teddy’s Barino held for second while favored Closing Remarks was third and Fi Fi Pharoah fourth. Of all of I’m So Anna’s wins, this one vaulted to the top for her owners. “No disrespect to our home town and Golden Gate,” Kevin Nish said, “but Del Mar is a diferent caliber of competition. Tere were some pretty capable horses in that race, and Fi Fi Pharoah had beaten us before.” Fi Fi Pharoah was coming of a win in the $151,000 Melair Stakes at Santa Anita June 19, where the Steve Sherman-trained I’m So Anna fnished third. Fi Fi Pharoah also fnished second in the $152,000 Evening Jewel Stakes as a maiden in April, with I’m So Anna again third. But in the Fleet Treat, the roles were reversed. Kim added, “We are just thrilled to pieces with Kyle’s ride. In his last two rides

you can see when a jockey and a horse pair up perfectly, and he just gets that horse.” I’m So Anna’s win was far from a shock. She was stakes-placed at Del Mar as a juvenile after breaking her maiden at Los Alamitos, then won the $75,900 Pike Place Dancer at Golden Gate. She rebounded from her Evening Jewel loss by taking the $76,350 Campanile Stakes. After the Fleet Treat victory, I’m So Anna’s record stood at four wins, two seconds, and three thirds in 12 starts for earnings of $289,740. Te Nishes bought I’m So Anna’s dam So So Fast for her pedigree. “She’s part of the Tizakitty family,” Kevin explained. Tizakitty, a direct female descendant of the Cee’s Song line of Tiznow and Budroyale fame, is also the dam of Western Kitty, whose son What in Blazes broke his maiden at Del Mar on July 17. KMN bred and owns What in Blazes, a colt from the frst crop of Straight Fire. When they got involved with the stallion Fast Anna (now deceased), he seemed a slam dunk for So So Fast. Already for KMN Racing, Fast Anna had sired Been Studying Her, a multiple stakes winner who is now in foal to Improbable in Kentucky. Te two fllies are Fast Anna’s leading progeny. “I’m So Anna is more accomplished than Been Studying Her now,” Kim said. Te problem with I’m So Anna now is that the sky is the limit. “We’ve run out of 3-year-old races for Cal-breds,” Kevin said. “We’re leaning towards staying with 3-year-olds—such as the grade 3 Torrey Pines at Del Mar— rather than facing older Cal-breds. As long as she trains forward and is feeling good, we’ll keep going.”

Tat $40,000 claim has paid them back many times over, not only in cash but also in excitement. Brandothebartender likes to come from out of it, and the 8-year-old gelding always puts in a dramatic stretch run. Even when he doesn’t get there frst, he almost always earns an attractive paycheck. Brandothebartender competes for Flawless Racing, Brian Flanagan, and Michael Jarvis. ven though Brandothebartender had already won two stakes this year at Santa Anita, winning the $152,000 California Dreamin’ Stakes July 25 at Del Mar might mean even more to his connections. Bertrando Stakes winner Desmond Doss set the early pace, and after a quarter-mile in :23.83, Brandothebartender was last. Jockey Umberto Rispoli wasn’t worried. “You can do anything with him—sprint, long, grass, in front, come from the back,” Rispoli said. “He does it all.” As the feld headed into the second turn, Flavien Prat on 5-1 Indian Peak suddenly urged his mount forward. Indian Peak almost instantaneously took command and looked like he would spring a mild upset. But Rispoli had Brandothebartender rolling, following Prat’s path. “Somehow I knew Flavien was going to make that early lead, so I said, ‘I’m following him.’ Ten my horse did his thing.” Tat “thing” was for Brandothebartender to come fying on the outside in the stretch, catch Indian Peak, and score by a halfBrandothebartender’s California Dreamin’ victory comes true for his connections in the Del Mar winner’s circle length in 1:42.55. He also has seven seconds and 15 thirds in his 46 lifetime starts, and he raised his lifetime earnings to $772,864. John Haagsma and Wesley Ward bred the son of Tribal Rule—Frysland, by Stravinsky. It is an active family. For the breeders, Frysland has also produced Lost Bus, a graded stakes-winning daughter of Bring the Heat and champion California-bred older female of 2016. Lost Bus has already produced a son of Stay Tirsty who sold for $110,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton California fall yearling sale. As for the owners, they continue to delight in Brandothebartender’s performances. “So much fun to win on him for his wonderful ownership group and to win here at Del Mar,” said Rispoli. Added Dollase, “Te owners are just a great bunch of people.”

RON BEEGLE SETS OUT ON HIS OWN VOYAGE

alifornia Tor oughbred Breeders Association mem ber Ron Beegle, who stands Golden State stallion Majestic Harbor, can trace his affinity for horse racing back to his younger days, and in particu lar to a spectacular Torough bred named Alysheba. “Watching Alysheba stum ble and still win the 1987 Kentucky Derby convinced me that Toroughbreds were

extraordinary athletes,” Beegle said. “And, that some horses, like Alysheba, were all heart and determined to win every time they stepped on the track.” Completely hooked, Beegle followed Alysheba’s career, “like baseball and football fans followed their heroes.” But it wasn’t until 1998 that he met, by chance, a woman who would change his life. “I was lucky enough to be on a tour of the back side at the Kentucky Derby,

and our guide was a young lady named Loren Hebel Osborne,” Beegle recalled. “We started talking, and I shared my admiration for Al ysheba. Lori told me she and her husband, now Kentucky’s Speaker of the House David Osborne, also loved Alysheba and they had a broodmare by him on their farm.” Beegle became a partner in the mare, named Mimicry, virtually instantly, and the frst foal she produced for the partnership was Grand Traverse. A stakes winner of $507,015, the Kentuckybred gelding by Pioneering ran for eight seasons, with 14 wins, 14 seconds, and a dozen thirdplace efforts in 68 starts. “Today,” Beegle said, “Grand Traverse and my re tired racehorses that I cannot fnd a second career for are living out their days at David and Lori’s beautiful Deerfeld Farm in Prospect, Ky.” Two years before Grand Traverse even debuted, Beegle bumped into trainer Eoin Harty at Santa Anita’s Clockers’ Corner. Beegle wanted to begin campaigning horses locally, but Harty was hesitant. “I learned later that Eoin quickly sized me up, deter mined I was likely a guy on a budget, and fgured it would be smart to pawn me off on his good friend and trainer Sean McCarthy,” Beegle said. “We laugh about that today because Eoin and Sean are two of my best friends and Sean trains all of my horses in Southern California.” It was McCarthy who recommended Beegle buy a chestnut mare named Lemon Chiffon. Te daughter of

Lemon Drop Kid—Catabal lerina, by Tabasco Cat, broke her maiden at frst asking at Santa Anita, and began racing for Beegle in her second start. Te classy mare ultimately earned $282,109 while running in California, Kentucky, and Illinois. “We campaigned her in graded stakes throughout the country,” Beegle said. “Our motto was ‘Have Racehorse, Will Travel!’ ” Another horse close to Beegle’s heart is Jagged Ice, a Washingtonbred son of Devil On Ice. He exemplifed the term “hard knocking” with 10 wins in 37 starts over four years, including four in a row for Beegle in 2005. “I owned him in partnership with my good friend Joe Fer nando,” Beegle said. Friends are an important part of the industry for Beegle. “In my experience, most horse racing friends are friends forever,” he said. “About 10 years ago Sean McCarthy introduced me to (current CTBA director and former CTBA president) John Harris. John and I became fast friends, and over the years I have enjoyed racing a number of horses in partnership with him. Five years ago, John invited me to join the board of directors for his company, Harris Farms Inc. I sincerely treasure my relationship with John. He is a kind man, wonderful friend, and an integral part of Califor nia’s horse racing history.” Beegle, the founder and CEO of Carriage House Capital Advisors, currently lives in Arcadia with his wife, Kimberley, and teenage daughters, Hope and Jolie. In 2014 he was with his daughters in Florida at a gymnastics national championship meet when the most magical moment of his racing career took place. Carol and Charlie Hebel, and Rick Campagna and Steve Spare made up Gallant Stable, which had grade 3 win ner and grade 2placed Majestic Harbor on the track at the time. Dismissed at 141 in the $500,000 Gold Cup at San ta Anita (G1), Majestic Harbor took on Game On Dude, Clubhouse Ride, and others to score an authoritative, 61⁄4length victory in the historic race. “Both of my daughters did great, and Jolie won the allaround national championship for her age group,” Bee gle recalled. “Tinking things could not get any better, I headed to the ho tel pool bar and requested that one of the many televisions be tuned to NBC so I could watch my horse race. After a lot of pleading with the bartender and customers watching baseball, not just one but all of the bar’s dozen big screen televisions were tuned to the Gold Cup, and everyone was suddenly

vested in Majestic Harbor. Tere were easily 100 people whom I had never met before screaming for Majestic Har bor, and I really believe their cheers helped carry Majestic Harbor across the fnish line that day. Needless to say, a meaningful portion of my winnings from that race went to the many rounds of drinks that I bought for all of my new friends that evening.” A $20,000 yearling pur chase at the 2009 Keeneland September sale, Majestic Harbor went on to earn $1,295,814 over seven sea sons. Also included in his 10 wins are the 2016 Mineshaft Handicap (G3) at the Fair Grounds and the Alysheba Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs. Given his frst equine love, the latter victory was quite ftting for Beegle. Now Majestic Harbor is a stallion at Harris Farms in Coalinga after beginning his career in Indiana. His daughter Pearl Tiara won the $77,200 Hoosier Breeders Sophomore Stakes at Indiana Grand June 23, scoring by 83⁄4 lengths. Another daughter, Diamond Solitaire, is multiple stakesplaced. “We are absolutely thrilled with his performance so far as a stallion,” Beegle said. “We believe he is one of California’s best kept secrets. From his frst three crops, Majestic Harbor has 39 foals, and 27 foals of racing age. Despite the relatively small number of mares, he was California’s #1 frstcrop sire of 2020, and this year he is Califor nia’s leading secondcrop sire. He got 71% runners from his frst crop, and 45% of his starters were maiden special weight winners.” With Majestic Harbor’s frst Califor niabreds to look forward to, and a host of supportive friends to enjoy the sport with, Beegle has plenty to keep him going in the Sport of Kings.

GETTING THE SKINNY ON SKIN DISEASES

kin diseases are fairly common in horses. Several different types of problems can occur, with varying causes—everything from parasites to viruses, bacteria, and allergies. Tese diferent problems can also vary in severity.

SCRATCHES

Te term “scratches” is a common name for areas of lumpy, weepy, and/or crusty skin on the lower legs, especially around the heel and pastern and sometimes up the cannon. Dr. Stephen D. White, professor and chief of service, dermatology, at the School of Veterinary Medicine

University of California-Davis, says this term (and “greasy heel”) simply refers to any kind of skin lesion that occurs on the pastern and fetlock areas. “Tere can be many diferent reasons and causes,” White said. “Te most common one we see at our referral practice—in cases of scratches

Scratches, skin lesions that appear on the pastern and fetlock and that sometimes is referred to as ‘greasy heel,’ might be bacterial, fungal, or parasitic in origin

to treat a skin problem successfully.” If the lumpy, crusty skin is caused by bacterial and/or fungal infection, specific medications can be administered that will resolve those infections. RAIN ROT

“Rain rot” is a common term for dermatophilosis. Te organism causing this skin disease is the spore-forming bacterium Dermatophilus congolensis. Tis bacterium needs moisture to emerge from dormant spore form and become infective. “We call the disease rain rot because it usually occurs in rainy seasons,” said White. “Te skin lesions often appear along the back because the horse is

or greasy heel that keep recurring—is a vasculitis (infammation of the blood vessels beneath the skin). “Tis is more common in unpigmented (pink) skin, but can also occur in colored skin. Te cause is not always understood. On rare occasion it may be due to a drug that was given to the horse, causing the reaction, and sometimes due to photosensitization (seen more often in unpigmented skin than colored skin).” Photosensitization can be due to liver problems, if the liver is unable to flter out photosensitizing agents from certain plants or toxins. In these situations, exposure to sunlight makes the skin reaction worse. Or the horse may have a photo-aggravated dermatitis that sets of the vasculitis. “In many cases we never know what sets it of,” said White. “In some cases it might extend from the legs to the rest of the body, but that’s rare. “When looking at a horse with scratches, the veterinarian tries to determine whether the cause is bacterial, fungal, or a parasite like chorioptic mites that cause leg mange, or a vasculitis. “Chorioptic mange can be treated with medications like ivermectin that kill the mites. Tus, it is essential to have a correct diagnosis, to know how

standing in the rain, or may appear on the lower legs if they have been wet. Tis may be one of the diferentials when diagnosing causes of scratches—occurring after the horse has been standing in water, or has been sprayed with water in the stall when people clean out the stall with a high-pressure hose while the horse is in the stall. “Tree things are needed for rain rot to occur—water, the infective organism, and some sort of micro-trauma to the skin to open the way for these bacteria. Tis could be anything from fy bites to another horse biting the animal, or little scrapes and abrasions that happen while rubbing or rolling, or the water impact from a high-pressure hose.” Rain rot is usually easy to diagnose and also easy to treat. “Tis infection is susceptible to most antibiotics,” said White. “But you might treat the horse and the skin problem clears up—and he goes out in the rain again and starts a new infection. Along with treatment, you may need to do some environmental or management changes.” For treatment, most veterinarians prefer a two-pronged approach—topical and systemic. “A gentle shampoo works well, with removal of the scabs and crusts caused

BACTERIAL FOLLICULITIS

Te term “folliculitis” simply means infammation of the hair follicles. “When it’s caused by bacteria, most of the time this condition is caused by a Staphylococcus species—sometimes Staphylococcus aureus or S. pseudintermedius,” said White. “On rare occasions it may be due to Dermatophilus, but this is very unusual.” To the horse owner, this infection often looks like what is commonly called ringworm because it tends to be circular in appearance. “Te hair follicle becomes infected and the hair shaft falls out, and then the ones next to it become infected and the area of hairlessness becomes a little larger, causing a circular area of hair loss,” White explained. “I think bacterial folliculitis is underdiagnosed, and ringworm (caused by a fungus) is often over-diagnosed because these two conditions look so much alike. “In many cases, if it isn’t covering the whole animal—located in just one or two small areas—bacterial folliculitis can be managed with any shampoo that contains a combination of chlorhexidine and miconazole. Tere are a number of products that contain both of those components at 2% or a little higher. Tese two medications are synergistic and work well together.” Tis treatment is usually sufcient to get rid of folliculitis in small areas. “If the horse has the infection in just one area, a topical ointment works well,” said White. “Te medication I like best is mupirocin, which is used to treat certain skin infections. Some people use Neosporin, but I think mupirocin works better. “If the horse has very many wide cir36

cles of hair loss, however, a fungal culture should be done, just to make sure it’s not some type of ringworm. If it’s not fungal, use of TMS (trimethoprim sulfa) combinations usually works well. Your veterinarian should be involved in diagnosing the condition and recommending/prescribing the appropriate treatment.”

melanomas at the base of the tail, and these growths have already spread internally,” said White. “It is important to have these checked by your veterinarian.” Tere are some other kinds of skin cancer in horses, but they are quite uncommon. HIVES

SKIN CANCERS

“Sarcoid is probably the most common type of skin cancer in horses, but we also see squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma,” said White. “Squamous cell carcinoma is usually slow-growing, but in later stages can not only enlarge but can metastasize and travel to other parts of the body. We have seen it on the prepuce of the penis on male horses and around the vulva of mares. It is most common on, but not limited to, areas of unpigmented skin or thinly haired areas.” It may also occur on the eyelids, including the third eyelid, or other parts of the eye. Prognosis is always better if you can catch it early, before it spreads. “Treatment is usually by incision, to remove the growth,” said White. “Cisplatin is also efective—a drug that can be injected into the growth—if it is in an area that can’t be surgically removed. Melanoma is a diferent type of skin cancer that tends to show up most often in older gray horses, though it can occur in any horse. “In young horses that are less than 18 months old, it is usually benign and might be surgically removed, whereas in older gray horses the growths may spread internally,” said White. “Your veterinarian should be consulted for a proper diagnosis.” Tese growths are often found around the anus or vulva or under the tail, but can appear anywhere on the body. Tese smooth, black lumps are often slow-growing and may never become a problem. Occasionally, however, the growth may spread internally. Melanomas can be more problematic in some locations than others, and this may determine whether or not treatment or removal is attempted. “I have seen some gray horses with

Te most common causes of hives include sensitivity reactions to biting fies or insect stings, and allergies. “Horses rarely have food allergies,” said White. “Tey are more likely to have reactions to pollens, molds, etc. It is somewhat similar to people with hay fever, except with horses the target organ is often the skin.” Hives generally appear suddenly after the horse comes into contact with whatever sets of the reaction. Hives may be

by this organism,” said White. “But the crusts are quite painful to pull of. Many people use a betadine shampoo, but actually the best thing is systemic antibiotics. Penicillin often works well; this is one of the rare situations in which I say penicillin will work. Te trimethoprim sulfa (TMS) drugs also work, and this is an oral product—which is nice for folks who don’t want to have to give their horse an injection every day.”

patchy over the neck and shoulders, or over the whole body. In an acute case, the horse is usually given antihistamine and steroids to decrease the reaction. Once the hives are gone, the horse is weaned of the steroids and the owner might make changes in management of that horse to identify the cause of the problem—if it hasn’t been fgured out from the horse’s history. If the

On rare occasions a horse could develop hives as a reaction to pollen or molds in new hay

horse recently was given a vaccination or new medication, or something else that might have caused the reaction, it might just be a one-time occurrence. Otherwise, the owner might remove one variable at a time and note when the problem goes away, in a process of elimination, if possible. Most horses only experience hives on rare occasion—perhaps after coming into contact with a harsh detergent used on the horse’s blanket, new hay, or new load of shavings that has a diferent chemical treatment. “A horse with chronic hives—that only go away after steroid treatment and then come right back again—should be closely evaluated,” said White. “We need to see if the fy repellent program is adequate (if the problem might be due to fy bites) or if the horse might have an allergy. “Treatment for an allergy would be antihistamines and maybe hyposensitization injections, or what people call allergy shots. Tese injections are usually efective in about 70% of the horses that get hives. But it’s important to remember that the efects might not be evident for six months to two years. So this requires a major commitment on the part of the owner.”

“Te sucking lice are relatively easy to get rid of, just by treating the horse with ivermectin or other avermectins, but these don’t always work as well for biting lice,” said White. “For those, we have to use some kind of topical product. “Neither type of lice can live anywhere but on the host animal. Tey lay their eggs (nits) on the hair.” It may take two treatments, a few weeks apart, to kill all the lice, because most treatments won’t kill the eggs. Another treatment is needed to kill new lice hatched out after the frst treatment. Horses might have lice in the winter when they are confned or in the barn. Once spring comes and they are turned out to pasture and shed their winter hair, the lice population crashes. But it’s still a good idea to treat them to get rid of all the lice. “In foals, a high population of sucking lice can make them anemic,” said White. “It’s best to treat them.” Tere are several ways to treat lice. “Some people like to use fy spray, but insecticidal shampoos also work,” said White. “For sucking lice, any deworming product containing avermectins should work.”

“Tey can only be transmitted to other equines, such as a donkey or mule,” said White. Lice are small and hard to see unless you have good light or a magnifying glass. Tey are found most commonly on top of the back and the sides of the neck. Te horse is usually very itchy and rubs the hair out. Lice usually appear in winter when horses have long hair and might be more congregated together. Tere are basically two kinds of lice—biting/chewing lice that merely feed on the skin and move around more on the animal and sucking lice that attach and suck blood.

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through July 25, 2021.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
