Memoriam

Longtime readers of California Thoroughbred are familiar with the stunning equine photography of Katey Barrett, who died Oct. 22 at age 91. A master at using light and motion to capture the art of Thoroughbred racing, Barrett frequently contributed to this magazine, with images of California-breds, vistas of Southern California racetracks, and faces of the people who make up the industry. Former managing editor Robert Henwood began using Barrett’s work in the magazine more than 40 years ago. Her photography has frequently been on the cover, and Barrett covered the inaugural Breeders’ Cup at Hollywood Park in 1984 and inaugural California Cup at Santa Anita in 1990 for the magazine. Barrett’s photography also appeared in the annual Santa Anita calendar for more than three decades and in the track’s gift shop catalogs, and the Barrett Collection is now housed at the Keeneland Library. Her photography wasn’t limited to racing, as she photographed many major

Light and motion are hallmarks of Katey Barrett’s photos horse shows, including the Olympics. She donated her work to such groups as the Wild Horse Sanctuary in Shingletown, Calif., as well as CARMA and Old Friends. A native of Hibbing, Minn., Barrett spent most of her life in California. She began in the movie and television business, initially doing some acting in such shows as “My Three Sons,” “Dragnet,” “Family Affair,” and “Bonanza.” In a time when female directors were virtually nonexistent, Barrett served as a

production assistant on “Mission: Impossible” and did manage to do some directing. Her ability to use light and frame a movie scene informed her photography, much of which is on display in books such as The Light Touch. “When I started taking pictures—it was in 1971—there I was applying all these things I’d learned watching directors and cinematographers setting their scenes,” she said in The Light Touch. “I don’t go to a particular spot with anything in mind other than the lighting.” But it was the horse who truly captured Barrett’s imagination and fueled her artistry. “Describe the look of a Thoroughbred as it prances in the walking ring or steps onto the racetrack, a show jumper as it strides onto a Grand Prix course; or a mare and foal as they run, kick, and frolic in a feld,” she said in The Light Touch. “Watch their eyes. What comes to my mind is Spirit.” Donations in memory of Barrett are welcome at Wild Horse Sanctuary, P.O. Box 30, Shingletown, CA, 96088. HELP AVOID DEHYDRATION IN FOALS THE PROBLEM

Dehydration poses a signifcant threat to the health of foals and signifcantly increases the expenses and labor required to care for the animals. Current products cannot help foals retain fuids quickly enough to avoid dehydration.

THE SOLUTION

Neonorm Foal helps to proactively retain fuid in foals helping the animals avoid dehydration. Foals that can avoid dehydration are better equipped to fght the challenging events of early life. (Neonorm Foal is NOT an antibiotic nor an electrolyte.)

A NATURAL PRODUCT THAT IS EASY TO ADMINISTER

Neonorm Foal is a natural product that contains a standardized botanical extract derived from the Croton lechleri tree, which is sustainably harvested. The product acts locally in the gut and is minimally absorbed systemically.

Neonorm Foal is a mint-favored paste designed to be given orally to foals once every 12 hours, as needed, for up to three days.

IT’S TIME TO RETHINK THE MANAGEMENT OF FLUID RETENTION IN FOALS

Remember, it is fuid loss from the circulatory system of the animal into the lumen of the gut that places foals at risk of dehydration. Foals are particularly at risk because of their high body water content and surface-to-volume ratio.

DOSAGE

10 mL of Neonorm Foal, 2 to 3 times per day, for up to 3 days. Between 2 to 3 syringes for a full regimen. Compatible with electrolytes and other standards of care.

HOW SUPPLIED

Can be ordered from your local feed store or distributor. 30 - mL Syringe

Happy holidays from the California Toroughbred Foundation, one of the largest contributors to scholarships for veterinary students at the University of California, Davis and Western University in Pomona. Our scholarships go to students focused on Toroughbred breeding and racing. In addition, we award the Louis R. Rowan Fellowship Award to a PhD research fellow at Davis. Te most recent Rowan Fellowship went to Christina Rohlf, a PhD candidate in the biomedical engineering graduate group at the University of California, Davis. Megan Elcombe and Silke Hofmann received this year’s scholarships at Davis, while Cassandra (Cassie) Bernas was the recipient at Western University. All three have a strong interest in equine veterinary care and have served internships that have furthered that passion. Bernas’ family owns several of-the-track Toroughbreds, an example of the importance of the Toroughbred industry to these recipients. “Tey have made such a large impact on my life,” Bernas said, “and I hope to continue to make a positive impact on their industry and lives as well.”

hen a jockey like Hector Berrios calls a horse the best he’s ever ridden, it is high praise indeed. Berrios has won more than 2,500 races in his native Chile and is making inroads into Southern California’s jockey colony. After winning the $98,000 Cary Grant Stakes at Del Mar aboard Te Chosen Vron, he bestowed that accolade on the California-bred champ.

Anita. Elite Power, the 2022 Eclipse Award-winning male sprinter, won the race for the second consecutive time. Te Chosen Vron fnished ffth, a valiant efort considering those ahead of him were Forego Stakes (G1) winner Gunite, multiple graded stakes-placed Nakatomi, and graded stakes winner Speed Boat Beach. Far from being vanquished, Te Chosen Vron demonstrated enough pep to Eric Kruljac, his trainer, co-owner, and co-breeder, that Kruljac brought him back Nov. 18 for the seven-furlong Cary Grant against Cal-bred competition. “Coming back in two weeks is something I’ve never done,” Kruljac said. “I

was a little nervous, but he came back so well and so fast from Breeders’ Cup.” Tree of Te Chosen Vron’s rivals were stakes winners and one was stakes-placed. Bettors correctly pounded Te Chosen Vron down to 1-2 favoritism. Four others that had been entered were scratched. Te Chosen Vron often comes from of the pace, but he broke sharply and took the early lead. Principe Carlo on the rail and Moose Mitchell on his outside stuck closely, with None Above the Law and Big City Lights not far behind. Principe Carlo, the 2021 Cary Grant winner, poked his head in front of Te Chosen Vron deep in the backstretch, but Te Chosen Vron soon grabbed the lead back. From there, Te Chosen Vron simply increased his advantage. He fnished 23⁄4 lengths ahead of Big City Lights in 1:21.22, followed by Moose Mitchell, None Above the Law, and Principe Carlo. “Te horse was so lively today,” Kruljac said. “Maybe we’ll just let him roll early from now on. Once he started widening, I felt pretty certain. What a blessing this horse is.” Kruljac has been the point person in Te Chosen Vron’s entire life, having trained his dam, the Tiz Wonderful mare Tiz Molly, for Class Racing Stable. Several in that partnership wanted to breed Tiz Molly, so Kruljac formed Tiz Molly Partners and bred the mare to Vronsky. He races Te Chosen Vron with John Sondereker’s Sondereker Racing, Robert Fetkin, and Richard Tornburgh. Te Chosen Vron, the 2022 champion Cal-bred older male and turf horse and the 2021 champion Cal-bred 3-year-old male, was winning his 14th race in 19 starts. He raised his lifetime bankroll to $1,149,678, moving him up the list of Cal-bred millionaires to 51st.

It’s easy to see why. Together, Te Chosen Vron and Berrios have won nine stakes, dating back to the 2022 E. B. Johnston Stakes and including last year’s Cary Grant. Te only demerit in their nearly unbroken skein came against world-class competition. Te Chosen Vron and Berrios tried their luck in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) Nov. 4 at Santa

rom its start in 1938, Hollywood Park proved to be where stars came to race– and not just those in the movie business. Seabiscuit, arguably the nation’s most famous horse, won the inaugural 1939 Hollywood Gold Cup, setting a glittery tone that lasted until the track shut its doors in 2013 to make way for redevelopment. Te roster of Gold Cup winners became a Who’s Who of equine Hall of Famers, including Triple Crown champions Citation and Afrmed.

Troughout its history, Hollywood Park was a showcase for California racing and California-breds. Not only did Cal-breds shine at Hollywood, they were among the track’s brightest stars. Two Cal-bred geldings–Native Diver and Lava Man–each won the Hollywood Gold Cup three times. Over its 75-year run, 13 diferent Cal-breds totaled 17 Gold Cup victories–nearly one out of every four. Ten years after its fnal race on Dec. 22, 2013, Hollywood Park is still fondly remembered for its place in racing history, particularly for its gallant Cal-breds.

homas Halasz, one of the owners of Bus Buzz, has a message for the aggressive animal rights organization PETA, which maintains that racing is indifferent to the welfare of its equine athletes: “Tis is how we care for our horses.” Halasz was referring to the lengths he and his partners went to in order to save Bus Buzz after the injury incurred by the stakes-winning California-bred. In the fnal race of the frst day of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships Nov. 3 at Santa Anita Park, Bus Buzz was in distress when pulled up in upper stretch while battling for the lead.

Te mishap, over in an instant, stunned the large crowd, which let out a collective gasp. PETA, in a statement released Nov. 7, questioned whether track and Breeders’ Cup officials, as well as trainer Steve Knapp, were covering up the condition of the 3-year-old Bus Buzz to avoid scrutiny. Te group has long been opposed to the horse racing industry and closely monitors negative publicity about the sport. Halasz can be outspoken, he admits, but said he’s had enough of PETA’s attacks. Surgery to fuse both fractured sesamoids in Bus Buzz’s front left leg was performed two days later, and Bus Buzz is recovering at Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch. Lovingier bred the California-bred son of Stay Tirsty and is a co-owner along with Amanda Navarro. “Sorry if I wasn’t on Twitter letting everyone know every step of the way,” Halasz said in response to PETA’s criticism. “Te one thing I’ll always remember is Terry telling the doctors to keep this horse alive. ‘Do anything you need to do to keep this horse alive.’ PETA always likes to make it seem as though horse owners don’t care what happens to the horses. Te owner thinks he’ll one day soon be ft enough to gallop, and when he does, “I can’t wait to send those photos to PETA.” Halasz added, “We are going to let PETA know: Tis is how we take care of our horses. Tat’s a big problem in racing. Nobody stands up for this business today.” Halasz says that by ability, the speedy Bus Buzz was the best horse he’s had during his 12 years as an owner. EVALUATING & DIAGNOSING LAMENESS

L

BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

ameness can mean anything from a slight hitch in the gait or a little tenderness when trotting on hard ground to severe pain that makes a horse three-legged lame and unwilling to put weight on the afected limb. Tere are many degrees of lameness, and equine practitioners have come up with ways to try to score and categorize those when discussing a certain case. Te American Association of Equine Practitioners created a scoring system to grade lameness from 0 (no lameness) to 5 (severe, non-weight-bearing). Pinpointing the cause of lameness is also crucial before proper treatment can be prescribed. Duncan Peters DVM, DACVSMR, ISELP Certifed Member, with East-West Equine Sports Medicine in Lexington, Ky., has had a long career working with equine athletes and lameness problems. He says it’s important to have a way to describe and quantitate lameness. “Veterinarians and researchers need a system that allows us to talk to one another to describe the degree of lameness we are

Simple fexion tests are one way to diagnose a lameness

AAEP LAMENESS GRADING SCALE 0: Lameness not perceptible under any circumstances. 1: Lameness is diffcult to observe and is not consistently apparent, regardless of circumstances (e.g., under saddle, circling, inclines, hard surface, etc.). 2: Lameness is diffcult to observe at a walk or when trotting in a straight line, but is consistently apparent under certain circumstances (e.g., weight-carrying, circling, inclines, hard surface, etc.). 3: Lameness is consistently observable at a trot under all circumstances. 4: Lameness is obvious at a walk.

seeing, and how signifcant it might be,” Peters said. “A mild lameness may actually be career threatening, depending on the cause and on what that horse does for a living, versus a horse that suddenly comes up very lame but it’s something that can be resolved. For instance, the horse may have a stone bruise or a foot abscess, which can be treated and he will get over and then be fne.” In many cases, a subtle lameness may be more problematic for the long-term soundness or future career of that horse. “By contrast, a ligament injury or bone bruise can be a longer-term problem that takes months or even a year to heal,” Peters said. “Te grading system doesn’t tell us what the problem is, or the prognosis. It is simply a scale that’s utilized to try to determine at this particular time how lame the horse is. It is supposed to be objective, but each person who uses the grading system defnes those numbers within their own mind. Te most common scale we go by is the AAEP grading system, which is 0 to 5—from no lameness to the horse not wanting to move.”

DR. DUNCAN PETERS PHOTOS

5: Lameness produces minimal weight bearing in motion and/ or at rest or a complete inability to move.

Trotting a horse on a lunge line in both directions can sometimes pinpoint which limb is affected and give an indication as to possible severity

Tis is actually a very wide range. “In most cases when we talk to clients,” Peter said, “the response we get is that either the horse doesn’t want to put weight on the foot, or ‘I can see it when he trots.’ Or they might say that when the horse turns a certain direction the stride is uneven. Tose are the subtleties of that range from 2 to 4, in terms of how lame the horse is, with the signs increasing on that scale. “Te most nebulous one to defne is number 2 (difcult to observe at a walk or when trotting in a straight line, but apparent when circling, carrying weight, going up or down an incline, or traveling on hard surfaces). Number 3 is easier to defne because you can see a lameness no www.ctba.com

matter what the horse is doing, especially at the trot—on the lunge line, being led, etc. Number 2, however, is the one most people, including clinicians, tend to have trouble defning within their own mind. “Personally, I do a lot of in-between scores like 1-plus, 2-plus, etc. because I feel the lameness is somewhere in between. My personal scale is more like 0 to 10. Many practitioners use that scale because they feel too confned using the 0 to 5, feeling it’s not subtle enough.” Some gait analysis systems are available commercially. “Tese are an attempt to remove some of the subjectivity of grading systems and may be helpful,” Peters said. “Te difculty is that not everyone has access December 2023

Health the frst question we ask is how bad it is. If the client has some guidelines, just being aware of that grading system, he/she can better communicate with the veterinarian to narrow it down. “If someone calls and tells me they have a horse that isn’t putting any weight on one leg, we need to see that horse immediately. But if someone tells me the horse looked fne in the stall, but when they turned him to the left as he came out, he took a funny step, it might be something that could wait until tomorrow, depending on schedules. Or, I could talk the

to gait analysis systems or is familiar with them. A horse that has a movement that’s just 3 millimeters of asymmetry may not mean much if I’m talking to a colleague who is not familiar with that system. Te commercial systems look at diferent parameters, but still look for asymmetry. In many cases they may fnd some asymmetry that may not correlate with the severity of a problem.” Some horses have an uneven stride the rider can feel, or an observer can see, but the horse is not “lame” because this is his normal way of moving.

A fexion test can sometimes give a false grading-scale number, says Dr. Duncan Peters, because it can sometimes accentuate a soreness

42

“Te horse is sound and performing well, but has always had this asymmetry in gait,” Peters said. “Perhaps he is a little club-footed and takes a shorter stride with that limb, with a diferent foot fight. Tis could be picked up with a gait analysis system, but doesn’t correlate to a performance-limiting problem. “We see this sometimes in the hind end as well. A foal may have been born windswept behind or with tilted pelvis or have angular limb deformity, or developmental changes associated with the pelvis. As he grows up, he still has that asymmetry. Te horse compensates for it, but is built asymmetrically and moves a little diferent, but is not hurting, not lame. “When we talk to owners and trainers,

client through some other things to look for and some tests they could do. Ten I might know whether I need look at that horse today.” After the veterinarian arrives to assess the horse and try to diagnose the cause, there are several strategies, such as fexion tests, to see if fexing a certain joint makes the horse temporarily more lame. “People often grade a fexion test, and this system is very subjective in terms of

CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED

www.ctba.com

December 2023

what that particular veterinarian deems important,” Peters said. “Most people say it was a negative fexion (no change) or a positive fexion, which could be mild, moderate, or severe. Tat system goes from 0 to 4. “Or the practitioner might try to incorporate the AAEP system and say— with the horse evaluated at a walk or a trot after the fexion—the horse was a 2 out of 5 before fexion, and is now a 3 or 3.5 after the fexion because he is more painful. Tis is really a false number because the fexion test simply accentuated what was a little sore, and now the horse shows lameness at the trot.” Occasionally, other factors are involved when a horse moves in an abnormal fashion. Discomfort may originate in the back, neck, or some other part of the body rather than feet or legs. As an example, in some instances a male horse with a large bean in the urethral diverticulum near the tip of the penis can be so uncomfortable that it alters the way he moves his hind legs. Lauren Trager Burns, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVSMR, a clinical assistant professor of equine sports medicine and rehabilitation at the VA-MD College of Veterinary Medicine, said subtle lameness due to pain can manifest in many ways, such as a change in attitude or performance under saddle. “Sometimes the lameness is prominent enough to present without a rider or tack,” she said. “But many of the calls I get are from clients who say the horse is not overtly lame, but they feel that something under saddle is ‘of’ or just not quite right. It could be due to neck pain, back pain, pelvic pain, or discomfort from poorly-ftting tack. “Whenever I start a lameness exam, I gather a very thorough history regardless of whether it is the frst time I am seeing the horse or if I have known the horse for many years. Te questions I ask involve the horse and also what the owner or trainer/rider is seeing or feeling. Te people who spend time with the horse every day can provide a lot of insight as to if there has been a change in the horse’s attitude during its daily routine or feeding habits.” A young horse in training can become

body sore, for instance. Has there been any change in tack or equipment? “A thorough history is followed by what I call a static exam, with the horse standing and not in motion, to evaluate posture, conformation, etc.,” Burns said. “If I fnd something that’s abnormal from a conformation standpoint, I want to know if it’s always looked like this or has it changed recently. “For example, I may see a horse with front feet that don’t match. Maybe one hoof capsule is smaller and more upright than the other. So I want to know if this has always been the case since you’ve owned the horse or has it changed over time. Someone who sees the horse every day may not notice gradual changes, but if I haven’t seen the horse in a while, it may be easier for me to notice a new asymmetry. Little clues can help us determine whether there has been a subtle weight-bearing discrepancy.” When evaluating hind-end lameness issues, Burns looks closely at muscle symmetry. “One of the easiest ways to look for asymmetry in muscle development, which can occur due to loss of use or some other issue, is to have someone hold the tail to the side so I can look at the horse from behind,” she said. “I focus on the muscles between the legs, in the quadriceps and gluteal region, and compare thigh circumference. Comparing side by side enables me to see if there is any asymmetry.” She also looks for any abnormality during a palpation exam—palpating the legs—while weight-bearing and nonweight-bearing. “I look for any withdrawal response from the horse, if I squeeze something that hurts or if I put a joint through passive range of motion and the horse pulls away,” she said. “If repeatable, I would consider that an avoidance response. I usually end with palpation of the poll, neck, back, and pelvis.” Ten Burns evaluates the horse in motion. “It is important to watch the horse frst without tack or a rider, but I often incorporate a ridden evaluation into a lameness exam, especially if the problem seems to occur when the horse is under saddle,” she said. “I always ask if the person is

comfortable riding this horse to show me the problem. If the problem is the horse bucking the rider of, we skip the ridden evaluation! Fortunately, there are other strategies we can do to try to simulate the weight of a rider on the horse. “It’s important to watch the horse move over multiple surfaces because diferent problems may arise depending on whether footing is hard or soft. Tere are certain degrees of lameness, however, that do not warrant a full motion exam.

December 2023

It’s important to watch the horse move over multiple surfaces because diferent problems may arise depending on whether footing is hard or soft.” —Dr. Lauren Trager Burns

“I grade lameness using the AAEP scale of 0 to 5. I think it’s easiest to use that scale by starting with the worst grade. If a horse doesn’t want to put any weight on the leg or it’s a toe-touching lameness, that is a grade 5 and something you can see before the horse even moves. If the horse is consistently lame at the walk, that’s a grade 4 out of 5. “In those situations, it’s not appropriate to have the horse moved, because it might be something as serious as a broken leg. I am very conservative about moving that horse until I know exactly what’s wrong. Te horse is guarding that limb for a reason, and we don’t want to inadvertently make it worse. “Within those lameness grades, you can have varying degrees of severity. I may write in my notes that it’s a grade 4 out of 5, but I then label it mild, moderate, or severe. A horse could have a mild lameness at the walk or a very obvious lameness. A grade 3 out of 5, in my mind, is a lameness that is consistently obvious when the horse is trotting, the lameness present with every stride. “A grade 2 and grade 1 can be more challenging to pick up on or describe. I consider grades 1 and 2 to be present

at the trot, but only under certain circumstances.” Te diference between a grade 1 and a grade 2 is whether the lameness is consistently apparent or inconsistently apparent under those certain circumstances. “We might trot the horse on a lunge line in a circle, for instance, and circling one way or the other might produce a more obvious lameness. Or trotting on a certain type of footing might worsen the lameness. If consistent at every stride, it would be considered a grade 2.” Te horse might travel sound on soft footing, but not when trotted on a hard surface, experiencing more concussion. “When we watch horses move, we can see diferent issues that are accentuated by whether the horse is traveling in a circle or straight,” Burns said. “We can further diferentiate whether the movement asymmetry occurs during the impact or push-of phase of stride. “An impact lameness shows up when the foot strikes the ground; absorbing that impact causes pain. We see a diferent alteration in that horse’s gait vs. a pushof lameness, which shows up when the horse breaks over into the push-of phase of the stride as the foot leaves the ground. Often a push-of lameness is worse when that limb is on the outside of the circle and impact lameness would be more obvious when the limb is on the inside of the circle. Tis isn’t a hard-and-fast rule, but when I see diferences in symmetry on a circle, I’m trying to further characterize the asymmetry as impact or push-of.” Te strategy with any lameness exam is to frst identify the afected limb or determine whether it’s a problem in the back or neck. “Even with a thorough static and dynamic evaluation, we may not be able to tell immediately what is wrong,” Burns said. “So we utilize additional diagnostics like nerve or joint blocks to pinpoint the area of pain to a certain location, and then follow up with imaging. “We typically start with radiographs and ultrasound and, depending on what we fnd, may suggest an MRI, bone scan, or CT. Sometimes we can watch a horse and immediately determine the problem, but often we need to do a little detective work to fgure it out.”

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. Earnings are from all available Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan and Hong Kong. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2022 was $30,508 or 73% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 73% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 17%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through November 26, 2023.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. Sires that are dead, pensioned, or no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old. Statistics are from all available Northern Hemisphere racing with earnings adjusted for Hong Kong and Japan. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
