Know Your

Lexington Event Company

Kaelyn Query is the Founder and President of Lexington Event Company. She started her first business when she was in high school, and while it didn’t have a name at the time, it sparked a passion in her for entertainment, hospitality and events. Since then, she’s dedicated her life to learning everything she can related to the industry - and has worked in every aspect of the business.

Kaelyn serves as the Chair of the Kentucky Chamber Small Business Policy Council Committee, and is a current board member of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce and the Lexington Children’s Theatre, and is a member of the Corporate Counsel for Shriner’s of Lexington. She was named a “Top 10 Wedding Planner” by Wedding Row in 2021, “50 Under 50” in 2020 by TOPS in Lexington; named a “Wonder Woman” in 2017 by the Richmond Business Society; named “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” in 2016 by Commerce Lexington Inc. during the Salute to Small Business awards; the “Rookie of the Year” in 2015 by the Premier Chapter of Business Network International; and a “Rising Star” in 2014 by the Lexington Young Professionals Association.

How many years have you been in business?

19 years planning and managing events; 8 years as a registered, official business.

Favorite colors for an event? Bright bold colors, or neutral tones with a bold pop of color.

On average, how many couples do you work with each year? About 20 wedding couples.

What lead you to pursue event management & design?

I got into it on accident. I wanted to be an interior designer and through an internship program realized that wasn’t for me. I started working for a catering company and doing my own events on the side, the rest is history. I’m type-A, which helps with the management piece, but I’m pretty good at being flexible and troubleshooting, which you have to do on event days.

What do you love about the bridal industry?

I love getting to know my clients’ story. How they met, what they like to do for fun, their engagement story. I’m a hopeless romantic, so I enjoy getting to know the details of their journey.

Favorite season for weddings?

I don’t have a favorite – I think all four seasons have their perks! I love the ability to create different looks based on the season!

What makes your company different? We get to know our couples as friends – I tell folks I talk to, if you don’t think you could hang out with me… we probably aren’t a good fit. I’m going to be around, a lot, so we need to be very comfortable with each other. We have a bigger team, which helps with troubleshooting and ensuring all details are covered. Favorite thing to facilitate for a wedding? Something custom/unique for their day. We just created three custom brews for a client’s wedding through Mirror Twin Brewing. Custom labels for the cans, custom names, the whole deal! It was a lot of fun and such a fun surprise for the guests.

Best advice for couples? Don’t sweat the small stuff. No one else will notice those small details that maybe didn’t land EXACTLY the way you hoped. Don’t get caught up in planning the party that you forget about the real reason you are celebrating. Hire the right vendors and they will take care of you.

What is the hardest part of planning an event?

Thinking through all of the “What-ifs” that might come up. That’s part of the reason people hire us, to think through the possible issues and ensure they don’t happen.

Where do you draw your inspiration? Each event is different. I like to incorporate touches personal to the couple. Then pulling from the season, the venue, the theme, etc.

Know Your PRO

Electria is made up of classically trained musicians with a passion for performance. We love sharing our music and helping to bring beautiful sounds and elegance to weddings throughout Kentucky and beyond. Naturally, we believe music is an important element to any event, but especially your most important moments on your wedding day! Not only does Electria offer an acoustic string duo, trio, or quartet for weddings, we also offer a totally unique musical experience with our Electric String Trio. Fusing traditionally classical instruments with contemporary music and backtracks, we have a modern and fresh sound that is unlike any other group. In fact, Electria is Kentucky’s first and only professional Electric String ensemble (and among only a handful in the United States). We often play acoustic for the ceremony and play in our electric style for the cocktail hour and reception. It’s such a blast and guests are usually wowed by the transition from our classical instruments to our electric style! We are classically trained musicians… who rock! You can listen to our acoustic and electric strings on our website at www.electriastrings.com.

How many years have you been in business?

We officially started in 2011, and were known as Louisville Strings at the time. In 2013, we added our electric string trio and formed what is now Electria. While we’ve officially been a business for 10 years, we’ve actually been playing for weddings even longer than that!

Favorite genre of music to play at an event?

Contemporary music! We love performing modern music in our electric style, especially hard rock and disco!

Favorite genre of music to listen to personally?

As a classically trained musician, you might assume it would be classical music, but actually, I personally love listening to a large variety of contemporary music in all genres, especially anything with a good beat and catchy chorus.

On average, how many couples do you work with each year?

We get to work with over 100 couples a year!

What do you love about the bridal industry?

I love that we get to be a part of creating happy memories and being part of a joyous day! I also love seeing all types of venues, traveling, and working with other vendors – the vendor network here in Kentucky is simply amazing.

What makes your company different? Most notably is our electric trio! We play contemporary music on electric versions of our violin, viola, and cello, accompanied by backtracks. With our custom backtracks (which includes drums, effects, and additional instruments), our music parallels the radio version of the songs, just with string melodies instead of lyrics. Beyond our electric trio, one thing that makes us different is our drive for continuous improvement. We’re always adding new music, upgrading equipment, improving systems, and mostly importantly, improving client experience...anything we can do to stay current and provide the best service we can, is always at the forefront of our business mission.

Most requested song you play? This year, our most requested contemporary song is “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” but “Canon in D” is always a staple!

Best advice for couples? Choose music that you love and that means something to you as a couple. Don’t worry about mixing genres or feel self-conscious about what you like – your music should reflect your style and taste! Plus, the awesome thing about acoustic strings is that

we could play “Canon in D” by Pachelbel followed by “Marry Me” by Train and neither song will sound out of place with the other, because to quote a recent client: “everything sounds classy on strings!”

Favorite season for weddings? The fall, especially mid to late September, usually has gorgeous weather!

Favorite element of a wedding day? We love playing in our electric style for the cocktail hour when guests are socializing, getting their drinks, and enjoy appetizers. The cocktail hour is the perfect time to entertain your guests with fun live music to set the tone for the rest of your evening and have a great time!

Favorite overall song to play at a wedding? We love playing “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars and seeing how guests start smiling, cheering, or dancing when they hear us play this song!

How many songs do you prep for a traditional wedding? We start prelude music 30 minutes before the wedding, and we are typically able to play between 8-10 songs during that time. For the ceremony, we will usually play 4-5 songs, which includes a song for honorary seating of families (such as grandparents and parents), wedding party entrance, bride’s entrance, unity ceremony, and then the exit song. For the cocktail hour or reception, we can typically play between 20-25 songs per hour.

“When I Look At You” – Bailey Rushlow & Dan Berk

HONEYMOON DESTINATION: Cancun, Mexico

OUR LOVE STORY:

Chas and I met in September 2012. I was a freshman at Dunbar High School and he was a junior. His family is originally from Georgia, but had just recently moved to Lexington for his dad’s job. As the fall continued, we hung out, text, and of course he gave me rides home from school. Around November, we find out that his family has to move back to Georgia for his dad’s job, so Chas would not be finishing the spring semester at Dunbar. I was crushed knowing that I wouldn’t see my best friend every day.

Early January 2013, we said our goodbyes and he and his family moved back to Georgia. I was crushed. I knew the connection we had would never be the same with someone else. We would occasionally text after he moved back asking how each other were or what major events had recently happened. Eventually our texts became less and less to almost non-existent.

Our birthdays are one day apart, so even if we hadn’t checked in on each other the entire year, I knew every year we would text or have a quick phone call to wish each other happy birthday. It happened every year - 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016. One day in summer of 2017, I was eating with my two maids of honors, Emily and Maddie. Randomly, Maddie asked me about him and I didn’t have much of an answer due to not talking to Chas in so long.

Maddie then takes my phone, texts him, and says “You need to move back to Lexington and marry Mason.” I was mortified!! I couldn’t believe she said that. A second later, he replies and laughs. Little did I know that would be the text that would bring Chas and I back together. From that literal moment on, we have talked every day.

Late June 2017, we eventually agreed to give things a go although it would be long distance because he was now a senior in college in Georgia and I was about to begin my sophomore year at Kentucky. I figured long distance with Chas would be worth a try since my heart would always skip a beat whenever his name was mentioned. July 2017, was my first solo road trip down to Georgia to see him in person for the first time since January 2013. When I finally arrived and he hugged me, I felt instant relief and felt safe.

I felt like I knew this was the beginning of forever with him. The rest of 2017, 2018, and 2019 were filled with lots of rides on the interstate and lots of plane rides. 3 years of not living in the same city, 3 years of living 6-7 hours away from each other. He was my person. He proposed in October 2019 and we finally got married in July 2020 during the pandemic.

Due to the pandemic and the unknowns that Covid brought with it, we decided to just have a ceremony to say our vows with our families. We pushed off the “big” wedding until July 2021. Safe to say, it was well worth the wait.

Randy Trent, the owner and operator of Clear Pro DJ, has over 25 years of experience as a DJ. He began his career as a radio DJ in Detroit, Michigan. The missing piece, he realized, was people. This led Randy to begin his first mobile DJ business in Michigan in 1998. After moving to Kentucky, Randy began Clear Pro DJ in 2012. He specializes in providing DJ and MC services for both ceremonies and wedding receptions.

How many years have you been in business?

I have been a DJ for 25 years. I attended broadcasting school and started my career as a radio DJ in Detroit Michigan.

I began Clear Pro DJ almost 10 years ago and have loved every minute of getting to be a part of couples’ wedding days.

Favorite genre of music to play at an event?

My favorite genre of music to play at an event is hip-hop and rap. I love seeing how people react to the songs. They sing along, act it out, dance, and just generally have a lot of fun whenever hip-hop or rap come on.

On average, how many couples do you work with each year?

I work with about 40 couples each year.

What do you love about the wedding industry?

I love working with couples and helping them prepare for their wedding day. There is nothing like getting to be a part of a couple’s wedding day and getting to

see them with their friends and family on the happiest day of their lives.

What makes your company different?

I think that what makes my company different is that I work to be more than just a DJ. More than just a guy who presses buttons and plays music. I had one couple encapsulate this well when they said I was a “full service DJ.” That is exactly what I strive to be. Whether it is helping to clear plates from tables, to help with coordination of events, or to give pep talks to people before their speeches, my goal is for the wedding day to be perfect - even beyond the music.

Most requested first dance song? There really is not a most requested dance song. Each couple is very unique. I always suggest to my couples that they choose something that means something to them and not just choose a song because it is popular. This means that I have played everything from “Islands in the Stream” by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton to “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran to “Tennessee Whiskey” by Chris Stapleton. My favorite first dance song, though, is a classic - “At Last” by Etta James.

Best advice for couples? Choose wedding vendors that you trust, that have a good reputation, and let them handle the details for you so that you can relax and enjoy your wedding day.

Favorite season for weddings?

Winter - Having a winter wedding is unique, and there is always a chance for snow which makes for a beautiful backdrop for a wedding.

Favorite element of a wedding day? It would have to be the toasts - specifically the Best Man’s toast. I love the jokes, the stories, and I really love to hear about the beginning parts of a relationship from the Best Man’s perspective.

Favorite overall song to play at a wedding? “Yeah” by Usher. It just never gets old and everyone seems to have fun whenever it comes on.

How many songs do you prepare for a traditional wedding reception? The only songs I actually prepare are the songs that are dance songs (first dance, mother-son, father-daughter, etc.) or are requested by the bride and groom. There are no pre-set play lists because the music for the night is determined by the crowd. I am very intentional about reading the audience to play songs that will be sure to get them up and dancing. If I don’t see a group of people out on the dance floor for a while, you can be sure I am pulling something that will appeal to them to get them out there.

Due to COVID-19, a lot of changes were made to our wedding plans and we wanted our guests to feel comfortable. It was a last minute decision to have our wedding celebration at The Campbell house. We worked with Jason and everything went off without a hitch! We then moved to Wise Bird Cider Co. with a few friends to dance the night away.

Know Your PRO

Ephemeral Florals is a full service, nontraditional florist located in Versailles, KY that specializes in crafting refined, garden-inspired floral designs for weddings and special events.

The concept of Ephemeral Florals was conjured up in 2018 by Kathy Ramsey, who wanted to offer Lexington, Kentucky and surrounding areas a bespoke and creative approach to foam-free sustainable floristry. Kathy is a KY native with a Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture and a background in native plant nursery production. She intentionally surrounds herself with sustainable and locally grown goodness in her daily life.

Ephemeral Florals procures the freshest florals from Bellaire Blooms, Wild Roots, Agape Fields, and Hither Blooms, and other flower farmers in central Kentucky committed to quality and earth-friendly practices.

How many years have you been in business?

4 Years

Favorite flower to work with? Lisianthus. She looks delicate and frilly, but in reality, she’s very hardy and the opposite of a diva. We use them in nearly every late summer through fall event.

Favorite colors in a bouquet?

Lots of colors, always. While I love a bold and moody color palette any time of the

year, I enjoy seasonal colors the most. Give me soft pastels in spring, bright and cheery blooms in the summer, and juicy and rich colors for fall. I love celebrating what’s growing during each time of the year in my bouquets.

How many couples do you work with each year?

We are able to work with about 1822 couples a year doing a mix of fullservice weddings, micro weddings and elopements.

What led you to pursue florals?

I’ve always been a crafty person, and I love trying out new crafts to see what I can do. This started out as just a hobby but after a while it stuck! What I love is that every event requires different colors, ingredients, and challenges, it keeps my work fresh and interesting.

What do you love about the bridal industry?

Connecting with all of our couples, meeting their sweet families, and teaming up with local vendors. I’ve made lots of friends, had the opportunity to work with amazingly talented vendors, and traveled to some beautiful venues.

What makes your company different?

We’re a proudly non-traditional florist with a special focus on sustainability. We work hard to combat the wasteful nature of traditional floristry through sustainable practices and forming close relationships with our KY growers. Thanks to our couples, we are able to support local farms by buying seasonally available florals.

Our designs feature unique ingredients we find while foraging, or blooms cultivated from our cutting garden full of perennials and natives. We also finish most of our bridal bouquets off with botanically-dyed raw silk. We dye these ribbons by hand in small batches just for our brides!

Favorite thing to design for a wedding? The bridal bouquet, hands down. I make them as fat as my hands can hold and pack them with color and texture! I love knowing that our bouquets are part of such a special moment.

Best advice for couples?

Always hire a good photographer, making sure their style and your goal aesthetic mesh. Give yourself permission to break traditions if they’re not serving you or your dream wedding.

Favorite season for weddings? The months in-between seasons is my favorite. May and September because you get the perfect mix of late spring/early summer and late summer/early fall flowers. So many pretty things are locally available during these special times of the year.

Favorite element of a wedding day?

Presenting the bridal bouquet to the bride. The lead-up is always a scary moment for me but there’s nothing more rewarding or heartwarming than seeing the look on her face!

Where do you draw your inspiration? So much of my inspiration comes from my local growers! They grow the coolest varieties and are always showing me something I’ve never seen before. I also draw inspiration from my couples, when they bring me new ideas, we work together to create designs that represent both their aesthetic and my style.

The big designers/ florists I admire the most are Ponderosa and Thyme, La Musa de las Flores, and Enemies of the Average. I’m always infatuated with their designs and businesses as a whole. I want to be like them when I grow up!

Being able to dream and plan the wedding with my mother!

PROPOSAL:

Caleb proposed on horseback! He set up a group trail ride with all of my friends. At one point, I rode away from the group and he followed. He asked if I could get down and help him. As soon as I did, I found him down on one knee. It was the perfect proposal, a private moment between us, with our friends watching from afar.

That was just the start of the celebration - he surprised me by taking me to dinner at the same restaurant as our first date. When I told him we were sitting close to where we sat a couple of years ago, he corrected me, saying that we were sitting in the same booth as the first date - that he knew that date would lead here and kept repeating to himself the booth number to memorize it for this exact moment.

We then went home, only to find a surprise engagement party he planned! It was the best celebration of love, topped only by our wedding!

MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS: Food, flowers & family!

How many songs do you prep for a traditional wedding reception? 20-100. Playlists are custom made. When is the best time to book a DJ? As soon as you secure your date and venue! DJs book far in advance.

What advice would you give couples seeking a DJ for their wedding?

Don’t just google a list of questions to ask in the interview. Be discerning. Go for what suits your needs above anything else. Price won’t tell you everything.

What’s a strange question potential clients ask in interviews?

Sometimes clients ask if they can come to another client’s wedding to see me in action. Would you want strangers crashing your wedding? Thankfully we have social media to publish photos and videos.

Personally I love timeless colors like white, silver and/or gold and sage green.

Aside from our over-the-top hospitality, our staff is highly professional and truly dedicated to offering a memorable experience. We consider ourselves a “no muss, no fuss” venue. FIRST DANCE SONG: “God Gave Me You” – Blake Shelton HONEYMOON DESTINATION: Orlando, Florida

FAVORITE PART OF THE PLANNING PROCESS: Attending the wedding shows and looking at venues!

OUR LOVE STORY: We attended high school together. It was a big high school and we never really talked, but he says he had a crush on me back then. A few years ago, he messaged me on Facebook and the rest is history!

PROPOSAL:

Justin coaches football. After a game one Friday evening, in front of everyone on the field he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! He said the entire game he kept touching his pocket to make sure the ring was still there!

MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS:

Snow was a very important element for everything we did! I had fake snow for the flower girls to throw instead of flowers and I received my snow the week of the wedding, which made it even more special. Justin likes to say I made it snow from here to Texas because I asked for snow on our wedding day!

Nadia’s Elegant Events is based in Lexington, KY, but travels throughout Kentucky and surrounding states to help couples bring their wedding vision to life! Our array of services consists of full-service décor, furniture rentals, gold chiavari chairs, stages, dance floor wraps and more. For more inspiration and photos visit our social media pages.

How many years have you been in business?

14 Years

Favorite esthetic to work with?

My favorite weddings are romantic and classical weddings. There is nothing like soft hues, delicate lighting, lots of candles and florals. Classic weddings are timeless. They are formal, clean and have an overall traditional look.

Favorite colors for an event either design or floral?

Champagne, gold, ivory and any greenery! I love florals in weddings, but love completing the look with chiavari chairs, ceiling drapes and dance floor wraps!

On average, how many weddings & events do you decorate for each year? We do between 30-50 weddings and events per year.

What led you to pursue event design? In 2013, there were many family gatherings occurring and I was tasked with decorating my brother in law’s

wedding. This was the first big event I had ever done. After that I decided to purchase some inventory. One of my friends trusted me with her engagement party. She was so happy with the way everything turned out that she hired me for her henna and wedding. After that day I decided it was time to expand!

What do you love about the wedding industry?

I love the wedding industry because I feel like everyone in the local industry works to accomplish one goal: to bring a couple’s vision to life. I love how everyone within the industry is always willing to help a hand. I also love how everyone is warm and accepting to all the different cultures and nationalities we work with. Many of my couples are from a different country and want the culture present in their weddings and everyone works together to incorporate the vibrant themes and cultures.

Favorite season for weddings? Summer weddings!

Favorite design element of a wedding day?

The dance floor wraps I offer. I look forward to soon offering the floor wraps that are entirely printed with designs not only names and initials! The way they take the reception look to the next level is incredible!

Favorite thing to design for a wedding?

My favorite thing to design is when a bride comes to me and asks for full decor for the venue. My biggest décor package which includes chiavari chairs, centerpieces, up lights, stage decor, aisle way entrance, cool sparklers, ceiling drapes and floor wrap. It really is the whole package. When I refer to stage decor, a lot of Middle Eastern, African, and Asian weddings have a tradition of decorating a stage.

Usually, the bride and groom are on a high platform so that they are easily visible to the guests. The stage floor, fronts and side are covered in white. There is a backdrop that is picked, furniture pieces, chandeliers, florals, pedestals and any other props we find suitable to go with the theme of the event. This is a major part of the weddings and events I am decorate for.

Anything else you would like to communicate or share with couples about who you are?

I love working with couples and collaborating with other vendors in the community to help make the couple’s vision come to life. Truly I feel like I have an eye for turning venues into something magical.

Diane Kellum is a self-proclaimed foodie who has loved being in the kitchen and entertaining for as long as she can remember. She grew up in a house where Friday night pizza meant starting with flour and yeast, and some of her favorite holiday memories are helping her dad prepare Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. College found her pursuing industrial engineering rather than culinary school, but ultimately, she found her way to the kitchen, and has never left.

While Type A Catering has standard menus for potential clients, Diane loves it when she gets to sit down with a couple, and can create something totally unique to them. And it’s not just menu design that she enjoys. She believes that she and her team are responsible for a huge part of the wedding guests’ overall experience, so she loves the nitty gritty of the entire design process, from picking china and glassware, to linens and decor, to helping create the perfect flow for the reception.

We sat down with Diane to learn a little bit about the woman behind the creative genius.

Number of years catering: 18 years. Type A Catering has existed for 9 of those years.

How did you get into weddings?

I was taking a year off between my undergrad, planning to go to graduate school, and had an opportunity to cook for my church. I had no plans to start

catering, especially not weddings, but it just kind of happened. I did my first wedding in July of 2003, and that couple is married with five kids.

Why weddings?

Because they are never get boring. No two weddings are the same, even if they have similar menus, the overall design is different.

Favorite appetizer to serve at a wedding? Cheese and Charcuterie Display.

What adult beverages do you recommend serving at weddings?

I love his and her drinks, I think it is fun, and it helps those guests that don’t have a go to drink, have something new and different to try. Since we are in Kentucky, I like doing one bourbon cocktail like an Old Fashioned or a Keeneland Breeze. I like pairing that with a clear liquor, either a vodka or rum. Mules, Dirty Shirleys, or Oaks Lilies are great options for a vodka cocktail.

What is your personal favorite drink to serve at weddings? Blackberry Mint Lemonade (virgin or with a shot of vodka)

What makes Type A Catering different? We really focus on being a boutique, bespoke caterer. We definitely fall in the quality over quantity. We are never going to be doing a hundred weddings, or even 50 a year. Our sweet spot is about 30 weddings a year, where we can be really hands on with our clients and their events.

Best advice for couples?

Take a deep, hard dive into your budget. My engineering background makes me really comfortable with numbers, and I think many couples start picking items without having a great feel for how much each thing should cost based on their budget. Whatever you budget is, set 10% to the side for fun money/emergency money. You’ll be in a better spot financially WHEN you go over, because everyone goes over their budget.

Favorite colors for a wedding? Summertime - hot pinks, yellows and corals. Fall – hunter and mossy greens, cranberry, pumpkin (I really like the ivory ones), and touches of amber.

Favorite season for weddings? Winter: January, February & March because guests aren’t going to so many weddings and events and your wedding tends to be more memorable.

Favorite element on the wedding day: I love when the groom sees the bride for the first time. I like elements of both the first look and waiting, either way seeing his face when he sees her for the first time is awesome.

Favorite central Kentucky restaurants: Tony’s of Lexington, Epping’s on Eastside or Dudley’s on Short.

Know Your

We are Kevin and Anna, a husband and wife wedding photography team located in Lexington, Kentucky. We love couples who are adventurously in love.

How many years have you been in business?

10 years

What are your favorite types of photos to take?

Golden hour/Sunset photos with a dreamy landscape.

On average, how many couples do you work with each year?

We work with about 30-40 couples a year, whether it’s for their wedding, engagement, proposal, elopement, maternity, or family session. We love connecting with our couples and capture their love story beyond their wedding day.

What led you to pursue photography?

We first started with a love for nature photography. As we started taking photos of different events and people, we realized how much we loved connecting with couples and capturing their love stories. As a husband-and-wife team, we find a connection with engaged couples.

What do you love about the wedding industry?

We love how it has allowed us to meet so many amazing people, from couples to wedding vendors. It has created a fun family that we feel so blessed to be a part of.

What makes your company different?

Being a husband-and-wife team, on the wedding day, we both shoot but in our own creative ways. We also have different creative strengths that allow us to create images full of emotion with beautiful backdrops. Having the experience of photographing over 150 weddings, we understand how to create an amazing wedding day experience.

The most unique portrait you’ve taken? The most unique bridal portrait we’ve taken was when we hiked 4 miles roundtrip to an overlook in the Red River Gorge at sunset. It was the most beautiful view with the dreamiest light. We love going on adventures to epic places.

Favorite venues or spots to shoot at? We love outdoor venues with amazing views. It’s hard to nail down a favorite, but we love being in the Red River Gorge, Hemlock Springs, Evans Orchard, Talon Winery, The Barn at Springhouse, Spindletop, The Bluegrass Wedding Barn, Keeneland, The Apiary, Shaker Village, The Kentucky Castle, Buffalo Trace, The Griffin Gate Marriott, The Galerie, and Ashford Acres Inn.

Best advice for couples? When choosing a wedding photographer, we say there are two important things you should consider. The first is to make sure you love their style. In 10 years, will you look back and be happy with the style you chose? Trends come and go, but your wedding photos are timeless. The second is your connection to the photographer.

You are going to spend more time with your photographers than anyone else on your wedding day. They will set the tone and emotion of your wedding day. Make sure it’s someone your feel makes you have fun and that you trust.

Favorite Season for a wedding?

We love the flowers in early spring, glowing sunsets in the summer, and late fall color.

Favorite moment of the wedding day? We love the first look. It such an intimate moment that we get to capture. It was actually my favorite part of the wedding day. We got to hug, kiss, and feel all the emotions while being alone. We also got to spend the whole day together taking fun photos. I love getting to relive that with couples.

How many photographs do you take for an average wedding?

We take a lot, but we usually get that down to about 1,000 images. Sometimes it’s more, and sometimes it’s less depending on first look, travel, and length of the ceremony. We don’t hold back any good photos and want couples to have them all.

Anything else you would like to communicate or share with couples about who you are or your business?

We love getting to know our couples and building a relationship with them throughout the wedding process. We do this by doing an engagement session for all of our couples. This helps them to get to know us and to make them comfortable before the wedding day.

DRESS SHOPS: 8 FIRST LOOK: Yes

FIRST DANCE SONG: “All of Me” – John Legend

HONEYMOON DESTINATION: North Carolina, originally Jamaica

FAVORITE PART OF THE PLANNING PROCESS: Getting to spend so much time with my family and friends planning everything!

PROPOSAL:

One day in November, I was having brunch with my friends at The Kentucky Castle. Brunch turned into the whole day and Sam asking me to marry him on the rooftop. I actually said “I do” on accident because I was so overwhelmed! After I said yes, we went to my sister’s house where my friends and family were gathered for a surprise engagement party. It was a whirlwind and a real-life fairytale!

CHOOSING A VENUE:

We toured several venues before seeing The Thoroughbred Center, but ultimately it checked all of our boxes! Our wedding was in the fall and the leaves would be changing, so the scenery was the perfect photo backdrop. Their event staff made everything so easy.

IMPORTANT ELEMENTS:

We really wanted everything to be “us” – by incorporating special details from each of our personalities, families and values. We picked out all of the details, my cousin Kaylynn made our cake and we even grew our own white pumpkins that we used for décor!

Radonna Bredar grew up on a farm in Ottenheim, KY (Lincoln County), and even though the days were full, there was always time to admire a cheerful zinnia or field of daisies. Her mother (who called her “Rae”) taught her the joy found in gardening, and she’s never lost that love of digging in the dirt. Now, she not only grows flowers for herself, but helps others celebrate and connect through the beauty of fresh flower arrangements and bouquets.

Radonna knows the importance of strong roots – Rae’s Bouquets is based in Danville, KY, where she and her family have lived for decades. Her husband and daughter are teachers in different central Kentucky school systems, and she herself has worked for local hospitals and medical offices as a nuclear medicine technologist. She uses locally grown blooms whenever possible, and always customizes each design -- not around specific flowers so much as around the feeling the bride wants to evoke. Romantic or glamorous, whimsical or elegant…just as every bride is unique, so is her bouquet!

How many years have you been in business?

I have been working with (and growing) flowers for years, but I didn’t start doing weddings until about 7 years ago.

Favorite flower to work with?

I love hydrangeas and roses no matter the season. Roses get a bad reputation,

because I don’t think everyone realizes just how many colors and shapes there are of roses. They also hold up the best in any weather including hot steamy days. In the summer and fall, I love using cockscomb from my garden if the colors work, or other unique flowers.

Favorite colors in an arrangement or bouquet?

“I love all my children equally!” When I do an all-white bouquet, I think it’s the prettiest thing I’ve seen. Then I do one bursting with color and suddenly it’s the prettiest–I really do love them all!

On average, how many couples do you work with each year?

I try to do only 1 big wedding a weekend (or 2 smaller ones) so I can give each couple their dream day. I probably work with 12-15 per year, in addition to other floral arrangements/events, but I am a small business looking to get a little bigger.

What lead you to pursue florals? That goes back to my childhood. My mother loved flowers, and after she died, I started growing more and appreciating her love for them in a new way. When my daughter was attending school at Centre College, one of her friends asked for help with her wedding flowers…and the rest is history!

What do you love about the wedding industry?

I love the joy and happiness a wedding brings, especially when I can help make the “dream day” a reality.

What makes Rae’s Bouquets different? I’m different because I’m small – every client gets a truly personal experience. I grow a lot of my flowers when I can, and I also try to use local businesses if possible. My husband and daughter do a lot to help, which makes us a pretty efficient team!

Favorite thing to design for a wedding? My favorite things to design are definitely the bridal bouquet and an arch (if there is one). Those are always the showstopper elements that capture the feeling of the day.

Best advice for couples? Don’t get to set on recreating something exactly as you saw it online – this is your day! Having an overall feeling/look you want to go for will allow for flexibility and personalization.

Favorite season for weddings?

All can all be gorgeous. A spring wedding is lovely – new beginnings, a welcome change in the air, the sun shining. There is also something about the dramatic look of a fall wedding, with all those dark, rich reds and purples. You can’t go wrong!

Favorite element of a wedding day?

Seeing the bride’s face light up when she first sees her bouquet…that is my favorite moment. I love knowing I’ve helped her to feel truly special.

Where do you draw your inspiration? Inspiration comes from the bride and the vision she has for her wedding. I try to get to know the brides and know what they really want. You can only know that by talking to them several times, so they feel comfortable enough to tell you what they are really thinking.

Know Your PRO

With our amazing team we founded the Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Lexington over 21 years ago. Quickly growing to be one of the largest dance studios in the world, we’ve had the pleasure of teaching much of Kentucky to dance! We teach Social, Latin, Ballroom, C&W, and all forms of dancing to both singles and couples. As a world judge, I’ve seen almost everything! We can also help you compete too, but one of our passions is teaching couples their first dance. We make it easy from the first breathless moment you walk on the floor to the resounding applause when you can breathe and the dance is done - we’re there for you!

What do you love about the wedding industry?

It’s really exciting to be a part of someone’s special day. Once on the dance floor, it’ll be memory you’ll keep forever and watch over and over again!

What makes your company different?

We go the extra mile to make sure each lesson is individualized for the couple.

It’s not a cookie cutter approach, we want your first dance to be as unique as you are.

Most requested dance to teach to engaged couples?

We see a lot of ‘Rumba’ as an adaptation to many songs, only because sometimes the rhythm works so well. We also do a lot of ‘medleys’ where you pick the song(s) and we tailor make it just for you.

Do most couples choose the song or the dance first?

Most couples choose the song and then we choreograph it just for them. So, when they step out on the dance floor they can relax and be themselves!

Best advice for couples?

Start early! The sooner you start lessonsthe easier it is!

How many lessons does it take for a couple to have a reception-ready dance? It really depends on the couple and the complexity of what they want. We’ve done quick dances in as little as 4 lessons and really amazing once in a lifetime dances too!

How do lessons begin?

It’s easy, call or text the studio and schedule a free private lesson - we’ll take it from there!

Anything else you would like to communicate or share with couples about your business?

We’ve seen a lot of shortcuts in our time. Your wedding is important and we hope you’ll take your time and let us work with you to make it the best day possible. Our staff are some of the bests in the world and will take the lead with you to make it easy!

How many years have you been in business?

I have been with Arthur Murray for 38 years, 21 of those in Lexington!

Favorite ballroom dance to enjoy yourself? Tango, the first dance I ever learned!

Favorite ballroom dance to teach? Tango, it’s one of the most fun dances for people to learn. It teaches connection, communication, and timing - with the rhythm of the music and with yourself.

How many lessons do you teach each year? We are very fortunate to be one of the largest Arthur Murray’s in the world, teaching over 15,000 lessons a year.

Know Your

From age 13 into college, I grew up in Harrodsburg spending most of my time at my family’s motorcycle & ATV business. My early years there were spent in the service department before I gradually transitioned to general manager as my parents aged and retired. Continual customer satisfaction training from Yamaha, Suzuki, and Kawasaki coupled with almost forty years of personal experience has taught me the benefits of treating people right. That includes employees as well as customers. In high school, I was chosen as one of two photographers for the school’s yearbook. I transferred from UK to Morehead State to follow my now wife, Denise who was the other yearbook photographer. We had our own wedding after I graduated.

In addition to photography, I serve as coleader on the audio/video team at our church. I plan to continue to photograph weddings until the fun no longer outweighs the physical effort it requires.

How many years have you been in business?

3 Years

Favorite types of photos are your favorite to take?

A great sparkler exit, but really any of the moments that happen between people during the day. Reception speeches are often a good source of those. Having two daughters, I enjoy the first look with dad too.

What lead you to pursuing Photography?

My experience as a yearbook photographer in high school where I was exposed to training aimed at photojournalism.

What do you love about the bridal industry?

Wedding photography checks all the boxes for me. It is challenging both technically and creatively, it is rewarding to make couples happy and it is continually evolving. There is no end to the knowledge and skills to be learned that relate to wedding photography.

What makes your Mark E Photography different?

Dedication to the idea that I’m at a wedding to serve the couple and their guests. My time with them is limited so I make sure the couple understands that we will spend it how they want. I educate them on the pros and cons of each decision made from our first contact to the sendoff at the end of the day. I want them to be ultimately be in control of what we do on wedding day. Wedding guests often remark with things like “You’re doing a great job” even though they haven’t seen a single image I’ve produced yet. They are really referring to how I’m constantly on the go and working to satisfy the popup request that come to me.

Most unique Bridal portrait you’ve taken? It was more about where I stood than the actual result. I was standing in a hunting blind about 10 feet above the ground that the bride had used in the prior season.

Favorite venues or spots to shoot at? Any place that offers a variety of places for portraits. I have really enjoyed shooting at The Kentucky Castle, The Campbell House and Brown Hotel. The front stairs of the old restored Fayette County Courthouse are pretty awesome at dusk with the right lighting!

Best advice for couples? Don’t put things off. Start building a wedding day schedule soon and adjust as needed including the day of. Use a day-of coordinator if you can. Build in a cushion for every segment of the day and plan for thirty minutes of downtime right before the ceremony.

Favorite season for weddings? Fall when it’s cooler.

Favorite element of a wedding day? The first time the couple sees each other all dressed up and when they walk (or run) away from the altar with unstoppable smiles.

Favorite moment of a wedding day? When the bride is listening to the groom read his promises to her. The look on her face can’t be duplicated in a posed photograph.

Anything else you would like to communicate or share with couples about who you are or your business? I owe credit for my fast growth in this industry to a great group of photographers in the Lexington. Some of the best photographers in our area have shared knowledge with me, encouraged me, had me second shoot for them with awesome couples at really nice venues, and served as second shooter for me when needed.

Know Your

Sterling Stems is a locally and family-owned flower shop that has been a staple of the Mount Sterling community for nearly 40 years. Where we welcome every customer as if they were a part of our own family.

How many years have you been in business?

We purchased the business 11 years ago this year, and I have been the lead designer over all Sterling Stems weddings and events for close to 7 years.

Favorite flower to work with? Dahlias have always been my absolute favorite even before designing. The Café Au Latte Dahlia, which is a large dahlia with a warm cream tone, is a perfect neutral for any color palette. The natural flow and movement of the dahlia in any arrangement paired with the large size, always makes an eye-catching appearance.

Favorite colors in an arrangement or bouquet?

I am partially colorblind, that is extremely rare for a woman, but even more rare for artists and art instructors. I spent many years in school to counteract my disability and learn to work with it, so it would not hinder my creating. With my studies, I developed a way for my eyes to distinguish value to determine the color if for any reason I faced an issue of not recognizing the colors I am deficient in, such as; red, green, blue and purple.

Therefore, even though I can carry out numerous designs, numerous styles, and color palettes, neutrals have become my strength by far. Creams, Whites, Taupe, Black, etc.

On average, how many couples do you work with each year? 30-40 couples per year

What do you love about the wedding industry?

Seeing the hard work, the behind the scenes come to life and the dreams of our clients coming to life.

What makes your company different? Our small-town mentality. Even though we have grown tremendously over the past couple years, we still put customer service and small-town manors at the forefront of our business.

Favorite thing to design for a wedding? That has to be a tie between bridal bouquets and large installation pieces like arbors. I love working large, even when I painted, I built my own canvases and worked on large scale.

Best advice for couples? Find vendors that you connect with, that take the time to understand your vision and meet your needs.

Favorite season for weddings? Fall is my absolute favorite season with the rich cozy color schemes.

Favorite element of a wedding day? Choosing focal points to highlight within the ceremony and reception that are jaw dropping show stopping pieces.

Where do you draw your inspiration? I draw my inspiration from meeting and talking with the couple, hearing their visions personal styles, then working to come up with a personal creation tailored for them.

Know Your PRO

Chris Dedman has been delivering quality entertainment to couples in central Kentucky for over 32 years. His passion and love for what he does is infectious. He is truly in the business to give couples the best day of their lives. Chris has produced over a thousand of weddings with a 100% satisfaction rating to date. When you put your trust into Chris Dedman Productions, they will deliver everything they promise and much more!

How many years have you been in business?

I have been in the entertainment business for 33yrs. I started DJing at the age of 12. I started out doing my friend’s birthday parties. I remember I had a nice modified home stereo system, 2 - Sony CD discman players, a dual tape deck, 2 - Technic 1200 record players, a radio shack realistic 4 channel mixer and a red and blue police light. I honestly thought I was the man!

Favorite genre of music to play at an event? My favorite genre of music is late 90’s and early 2000’s Hip Hop/Top 40. So many amazing artists and dance songs came from that era. My personal favorite era of music to listen to would be Country music from the 90’s and early 2000’s or old school Hip Hop and R&B. It really just depends on my mood at the time.

On average, how many couples do you work with each year? After rebranding in 2020 we are doing between 25 - 30 weddings a year so we can offer a full-service experience.

What lead you to pursue entertaining or becoming a DJ?

Growing up I was influenced by music my whole life. My dad loved Motown and classic rock and a little country. My mom on the other hand was Rock, country and 70 and 80’s top 40, and my grandfather loved Frank Sinatra, the rat pack, Louie Armstrong, Etta James and Billy Holiday along with classic country. I was in the school choir. I also grew up during a time where music was great across all genres where MTV, VH-1 and CMT was music all day every day. The love of music is why I love doing what I do.

What do you love about the wedding industry?

The industry as a whole is like a big family. I love how we look out for each other and always willing to lend a hand if someone needs help. It takes a village to put on a wedding and being able to work together is very important for our couples.

What makes your company different?

I think what makes my company different is the one-on-one service we offer our couples. We want to get to know them, their wants and their needs. This is their day so we want It to be beautiful and amazing for them and their guests. We create moments for them and their guests that will last for a lifetime. They are not just another couple getting married, they are family to us. We do this by using the continued education and training that we invest in yearly, our years of experience and what we learned working for Disney to deliver this for each couple we work with.

Most requested First Dance Song? “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran

Favorite First Dance Song? “At Last” by Etta James

Best advice for couples?

My advice to couples, in regards to entertainment is to do your homework before you sign your contract. Your DJ/ MC can make or break your wedding day. Check their reviews, ask for references and make sure they are insured. They are there to do much more than just play music.

Favorite season for weddings?

The Fall is by far one of my favorite seasons for weddings. It’s much cooler and the fall colors are just beautiful in central Kentucky.

Favorite element of a wedding day? The ceremony is my favorite element of a wedding. Watching someone marry their person and their best friend is just magical.

Favorite overall song to play at a wedding?

“(I’ve Had) The Time of my Life” by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes is by far one of my favorite songs to play. Most people can relate to it and it’s just a feel-good fun song. It’s one that I will often end the night with. The cool thing is watching people leave the reception singing it.

How many songs do you prep for a traditional wedding reception?

In general, I will prep between 60 to 70 songs per wedding. It just really depends on the hours and if we are providing the music for cocktail hour. You can only play around 64 songs in an uninterrupted 4-hour set. We do a lot of things in those 4hrs so you won’t ever be able to play that many songs.

Know Your

Bryan Kidd is originally from Berea, KY. He studied interior design at Eastern Kentucky University and went on to get his Master of Divinity from Mercer University in Atlanta, GA. Lee Pence is from Montgomery, AL. Lee also attended EKU where she studied business management. She currently lives in Richmond, KY with her husband and three children. Bryan and Lee have worked together for about fifteen years and have owned Added Touch together for five years.

How many years have you been in business?

Added Touch has been in business for 35 years! The original owners opened their shop in 1986. After working for the business for about twelve years, Lee and Brian decided to purchase Added Touch. We have owned Added Touch together for five years now, and we love every crazy moment of it!

What are the different services you offer? We pride ourselves in being a full-service business – offering wedding planning, day-of wedding directing, event design and styling, décor rentals, as well as fresh and silk custom flower options. Each of our clients are unique, and we love being able to create custom packages that suit their specific event needs.

What are benefits to fresh vs. silk florals? Many couples are surprised to learn that we offer both fresh and silk floral options, and there are benefits to both! It’s hard to

beat the natural beauty of fresh flowers, though times have changed and there are some great high-quality silks on the market now. When purchasing fresh and silk flowers they are actually about the same cost, sometimes silks are even more pricy! However, renting silk flowers is a great option for many applications, especially if you are on a budget!

On average, how many couples do you work with each year?

Since purchasing the business in 2017, we have poured lots of time and energy into growing the business. Over the past five years our events calendar has steadily grown each year. Currently, we service between 20-25 couples per year.

What do you love about the bridal industry?

Truthfully, the couples are the best part! It is such an honor and privilege to be able to assist clients on one of their most memorable and special days, we don’t take that lightly.

What makes your company different? Added Touch is special because of the variety of services we offer. We truly can be a “one stop shop” for all our client’s design and planning needs. It takes a lot of work and stress off our clients, not having to source through multiple different vendors.

Favorite thing to design for a wedding? Lee really enjoys creating beautiful bridal bouquets and floral displays. The more unique and rarer the flower is, the happier she is! I love when I am able to build custom backdrops and other types of installations. I love being creative and working with my hands to put together something original.

Best advice for couples? Enjoy the process! I know it’s cliché advice, but it’s true, as long as you get married to the person you love, the day is still a success.

Favorite season for weddings? FALL! Hands down. Nature is so gorgeous in the fall, color pallets are endless, and the weather is typically much more comfortable. This time of year, the design options are endless!

Favorite element of a wedding day?

When we have the privilege of directing a wedding, our favorite moment of the day is always the moment right before the bride walks down the aisle. The wedding party is already in place, guests are waiting in anticipation, and the music is playing. We always pause, adjust the bride’s dress, remind her to smile, and then swing open the doors. It’s such a special moment.

Where do you draw your inspiration?

My parents have a farm in Berea, KY with a pumpkin patch, corn maze, remote cabin in the woods, and lots of sheep! I find inspiration all around the farm in the dramatic sunsets, wooded trails, and even in the wildflowers that grow together in the hay fields. Lee often says she “lets the flowers speak” to her when designing, having a basic idea of what she wants to create but allowing the individual flowers dictate how they need to work together to complement each other.

Anything else you would like to communicate or share with couples about who you are or your business? Don’t be afraid to be different! Just because “tradition says” to do it one way, it’s your wedding – do whatever the heck YOU want! We love working with all types of weddings. Grand and elegant, simple and chique, or themed with a sense of individual flair; we can help you create the wedding of your dreams!

FAVORITE PART OF THE PLANNING PROCESS:

Working with Doug Smith Designs + Events! He made me feel very organized! We loved having a bugler do the call to post and glow sticks on the dance floor!

OUR LOVE STORY: We met through mutual friends at a Halloween party. I was dressed as Minnie Mouse and he was dressed as a biker with a mullet.

PROPOSAL:

After a fancier than usual dinner we went to see Southern Lights at the Kentucky Horse Park. We got out of the car for the walking portion and were talking about our past two years together. We came around the corner of a building and I saw a bench with a soft white blanket, a big heart, a bottle of champagne and two champagne flutes. I knew immediately it was happening!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES:

At the very least, get a day-of coordinator! Wedding planning does get overwhelming, but you have to keep everything in perspective. The only thing you need to focus on is setting yourself up for a good marriage. The party on the wedding day is just a bonus!

Know Your

Greetings Y’all. Matt Gwynn here with Riptide Productions. I’m a single dad to an amazing 13-year-old boy, and love life. Music and travel fill a lot of our time. I have lived across the eastern sea border for many years, but Lexington has been home for 15 years now and we love it. A lot of sweat and tears went into building this business, and I couldn’t have done it without the love and support of my son, and my family back home. Huge thanks to my team and their continued dedication to providing top notch entertainment to couples in the Kentucky area. I love what I do. Much love to everyone out there who took the time to read a little about myself and Riptide Productions. I thank you.

Favorite genre of music to listen to personally?

I listen to a lot of Beach Vibes and Country music. At my core, I’m just an ole country boy who likes to have fun.

On average, how many couples do you work with each year?

I have the pleasure of working with over 100 new couples.

What lead you to pursue entertaining or becoming a DJ?

I have always enjoyed entertaining and music. Public speaking, comedy, and reading a crowd have always been strong attributes of mine.

What do you love about the wedding industry?

I honestly love bringing joy to our couple’s one big day. I love seeing smiles, laughter, and families coming together for one epic night. One epic occasion. Knowing we played a part in that is special to us.

What makes your company different? We want to create an experience for you and your guests that goes above and beyond expectations. We want everyone to be tired by the last song, from dancing. Our whole goal is ensuring every guest leaves happy. We meticulously plan the atmosphere and vibe you want to feel when you walk into that reception for the first time.

Favorite First Dance Song?

This is so tough. There are so many, but I’ll say Forever After All by Luke Combs!

Best advice for couples?

Just engaged? Plan a date as soon as you can and begin research. I’d personally recommend seeing Sarah at Simply Love Studio first thing!

Favorite season for weddings? I love them all, but Fall wins it all for me.

Favorite over-all song to play at a wedding?

Every song we play is great! We have a secret recipe when it comes to mixing songs and what we play. Right now, the song I have the most fun with playing is Levitating by Dua Lipa.

How many songs do you prep for a traditional wedding reception? We typically create 6 different playlists for each wedding we perform if we are providing ceremony music. If the wedding reception is scheduled to be 2 hours of dancing, we typically will create a custom set for 3-4 hours of music. Songs and vibes can change fast at a wedding, and we are ready for that.

How many years have you been in business?

I’ve actually been DJing for 15+ years for fun and family events. I started Riptide Productions 6 years ago.

If you didn’t own your current business, what would you do?

If I didn’t own Riptide Productions I’d be in the realty business.

Favorite genre of music to play at an event?

At most events we play popular pop hits from the 80’s-today. I personally love every genre we play. I love music. I just wish I could sing!

Planned to Perfection of the Bluegrass is a boutique wedding and event planning company located in the heart of Kentucky. Our professional planners and coordinators are style savvy, budget conscious and thoroughly engaged in the planning process. Our passion is to plan and execute fantasy proposals, dream weddings, intimate elopements and inspiring events. We are proudly LGTBQ friendly and value diversity at every opportunity.

How many years have you been in business?

Our first wedding was in the Spring of 2009. We think of that as the one that ‘launched’ our business and allowed us to build what we are today. 2021 is PtoP’s 12th year in business!

Favorite esthetic to work with?

We really love all styles of artistry. Our esthetic is what our clients want -- and they want the spectrum! Our favorites are the ones that really challenge our creativity and make us think outside the box. We are working on a tropical wedding for 2022 and we are excited by all the opportunities that it brings!

On average, how many couples do you work with each year?

Before the pandemic, our average was 43. We are building back with that as our goal for 2022, but our team is growing to accommodate 60 or more couples a year.

What lead you to pursue event management & design?

From day one, we wanted the flexibility to earn extra income within our personal time constraints. To put it another way, we were starting our professional careers and starting families when we joined the industry in 2009. There were a lot of commitments to juggle! Time that remained went to growing our small business. Event management, planning, and design allowed us to use our professional skills in communication, marketing, and organization--at our pace and at times of our choosing.

What do you love about the bridal industry?

We love that the wedding industry changes constantly. The design, styles, colors, and people we meet change with every wedding! No one day in this business is the same as the one before. The cultures we encounter and learn about are wondrous and our clients inspire us to be the best we can be.

What makes your company different?

Planned to Perfection of the Bluegrass is a team of professional coordinators and planners. Currently, we have FIVE extraordinarily talented women who collaborate to bring together the best weddings in the Bluegrass. We complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses to the advantage of our clients. Our skill sets range from budgeting to bartending and everything in between.

Favorite thing to facilitate for a wedding?

Our favorite thing to make easier for our clients is the whole process of planning. We love hearing “I feel so much better after talking to you.” Our job is to remove the stress, make the planning easier, and ensure their wedding day runs smoothly. The best feeling comes at the end of the wedding, all are happy, and the day(s) was PERFECT.

Best advice for couples?

Your wedding is for YOU. Not anyone else. Not your future in-laws, not your parents, your friends, or for the social media bots. Make it about you as a couple and no one else.

What is the hardest part of planning an event?

Hands down, the most difficult part is proper communication. Clear, concise, and timely communication is key to a successfully produced event. Perhaps it’s a hard conversation about budget and affordability or a difficult conversation about family or vendor dynamics. As with life, everyone needs to speak up, state their needs, and communicate effectively.

FAVORITE PART OF THE PLANNING PROCESS: Working with Betsy at Planned to Perfection to create the feel we wanted and our tasting at Keeneland!

LOVE STORY:

We met in law school at Ohio State University and began as friends. After graduation we continued to talk every day despite being in different cities. We planned a trip to Washington DC to see the cherry blossoms in bloom. After that trip our relationship solidified and Matt was able to find a job to be close to me.

CHOOSING A VENUE:

As a child, I grew up visiting my grandparents in Lexington, with some of my best memories having been in the bluegrass. Matt went to EKU and frequented Keeneland. We wanted a venue that represented both of us.

IMPORTANT ELEMENTS:

We wanted less of a formal gathering and more of a party feel. Music, food and drinks were our top priority!

Know Your PRO

I have been painting as a hobby for just shy of 10 years, and am finally pursuing my talent professionally this year. I am deeply connected to each painting I create, and I consider it pure joy to create for people. At weddings I curate moments from the event and combine them, creating a work of art as unique as the couple getting married.

How many years have you been in business?

I have been painting as Katie Nelson Fine Art for one year.

What is your professional training as an artist?

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Asbury University. I also paint daily, so my practice has been huge in developing my skill.

When you are given a blank canvas to paint whatever you want, what do you prefer to paint?

I am passionate about creating work that evokes deep emotions. My calling in life is to create work that leads people to God, to see that simply because of who they are, they are loved, and are worthy of grace and mercy. I deeply think that we all could be reminded of those things, whether spiritual or not. The work I create tends to depict the human form in an abstract environment.

On average, how many couples do you work with each year?

This year I have worked with 14 couples, my goal is 25-30 for 2022!

What do you love about the bridal industry?

I love seeing what areas of each event couples choose to really make their own. I’m a big fan of twists on classic traditions. I am also loving the camaraderie between vendors.

What makes you different than other artists painting at private events?

I am Katie Nelson, really there is no one like me. That may sound really arrogant, but it has taken me 27 years to see that I am a special person, because I am me. I have a gift that is unique to me, and other artists have a gift that is unique to them. For my artistic style specifically, I love to push light and put an emphasis on the environment surrounding the couple. I also take a lot of pride in my accuracy of the human form.

I get a lot of comments about how the painting looks “just like xyz.”

What special requests do you receive?

Couples request that their dogs be included in the painting! I even have gotten to add special tributes to grandparents who have passed.

What size paintings do you offer?

For live wedding paintings I currently offer 16x20, 18x24, 24x30, and 24x36.

I am always happy to entertain custom sizes if the opportunity arises.

Best advice for couples?

Make sure you splurge on things you really want. Find something unique to you and amplify it throughout your day. Be sure to eat and drink plenty of water too! As far as wedding paintings go though, if you have an idea, please let me know. I always love being trusted to do my thing, trust me, you will not be disappointed!

Favorite season for weddings?

My wedding was in the Spring and I love the newness that comes with spring, but fall weddings have a special place in my heart.

Favorite element of a wedding day?

I love the cocktail hour, in between the ceremony and reception. I love hearing the joy in multiple conversations. People reconnecting and celebrating their friends and family. When I am not working a wedding, I love a good DJ and dance floor.

How long does it take you to complete a painting at a wedding? The amount of time is different depending on the size and medium. I stay at each event for four to six hours and work as much as the paint allows. A smaller acrylic painting, I could complete in about six hours, while oil paintings take several months after the event. I tell couples to expect 3-6 months after the event, but I have been completing them in about 2 months.

Do you offer more than just canvas paintings?

I also offer cards (minimum order of 50) made from an image of the painting once it has been completed. I think they could be really unique thank you cards. There are of course my 4 main sizes, but new things are on the horizon. I have two test weddings this fall, so keep an eye out for additional packages!

Anything else you would like to communicate or share with couples about who you are or your business?

I have always wanted to be involved in the wedding industry, and this has given me a really unique way to be involved.

I do not only do live wedding painting, commissions are a large part of my business too, and hopefully my own collections of work!

CHOOSING A VENUE:

We were in the process of moving from Connecticut to Louisville when we got engaged. I grew up in Colorado and Matt grew up in Connecticut. We figured Kentucky was in the middle and it would be easier for us to plan where we lived. When we saw The GlenLary Estate we knew it was the one! We could not image a more picturesque Kentucky venue!

IMPORTANT ELEMENTS:

Our family & friends in attendance followed by band, food and bar!

ADVICE:

Hire a wedding planner! Alicia with Great Expectations KY was the best money we spent. With all of our Covid changes, she handled every hiccup and managed to pull off two of the best days of our lives!

Remember what is important and why you are getting married. There was a lot of heartache and tears that came when we had to push our big October wedding to April. Our October ceremony was small, intimate and absolutely perfect. Of the 25 people that attended, my Grammy was there. She unexpectedly passed away a week before our April wedding. What that taught me is that everything works out as it is supposed to at the end of the day. No matter how big or small your wedding is, it’s truly magical.

Know Your

With a decade of makeup artistry experience and training throughout the nation, Professional Makeup Artist, Kristin Gray and her team offer Makeup services in Lexington and beyond!

By way of MAC Cosmetics, Yves Saint Laurent and her own personal flair for the art, a Texas native, previous Las Vegas dream chaser and bridal connoisseur Kristin and her team can help make your vision come to life on your wedding day!

How many years have you been in business?

I’ve been doing makeup all my life, as I come from a family of artists, and freelanced for years after moving to Lexington in 2013. Kristin Gray Makeup Artistry (KGMA) wasn’t established until about six years ago.

Favorite colors to work with?

I love some blended neutrals. More specifically, rusty colors. MAC had/has this one shadow called “Uninterrupted” that is a mustardy-chartreuse shade, that has always been close to my heart. Mixing a set of warmer neutrals with a soft matte baby pink, or a mauve is another favorite combo!

What is your favorite part of the beauty process?

I’m really into skin. I know everyone thinks eyes, but I’ve been doing it so long and so many brides request the same look, that it’s really second nature to me. I think skin is so personal to a client

and being able to transform what can be an insecurity for some, into a flawless canvas - while working with texture and hyperpigmentation, dryness, etc. it’s really really something I love.

I also never let my clients see the look until I’m completely done. So it’s always fun to see the “big reveal” at the end. I guess it’s kind of risky on my part because it could be a good or bad reaction, but 99.9% of the time, it’s a good one!

On average, how many brides do you work with each year?

My team has grown over the years and we can take on roughly 100 brides a year, although we like to try and make the weekends sane for everyone involved.

What do you love about the bridal industry?

I love how the bridal community has really grown to know each other over the years. Lexington is small, yet full of amazing talent. I love that we all support each other and how women driven the community is. We know how to recommend certain vendors to certain clients based upon an aesthetic that matches up or based upon how in sync the personalities are. I think that’s a cool perk of working within a close-knit community.

What makes you different?

My team is very specifically trained to be well versed in the world of luxury makeup, and airbrush – for everyone. We specialize in not having a specialty if you will. We love working with the LGBTQ+ community, every age and race imaginable. Beauty can’t fit in one particular box, and we pride ourselves on not trying to force it. I love making people feel beautiful. If you are a human, and you have skin – we got you! We are all also very real and fun to be around!

Favorite part of a wedding day?

There’s a moment of calmness after the bride has seen her makeup that I love. There are so many feelings and nerves and jitters throughout the mornings, that getting your makeup done is really an intimate experience, as it’s usually the last hour you have alone before putting on your dress and getting married. So, to me, it’s really the most special part of the wedding day - When the bride/groom

views their makeup, you can feel that when they feel beautiful, they are more confident than they were before, and ready to go conquer the day! That makes leaving a little bit easier.

Best advice for couples? From a makeup standpoint, book makeup at the same time as you would your venue, photographer, essentially when you have your date. We really do book up!

Favorite season for weddings? Although it’s always insane, I love the fall!

Where do you draw your inspiration? Everywhere. I think experience is the best teacher of all. As you grow as a person, and as an artist, it becomes easier to see beauty in the little things. If you look for inspiration, it doesn’t come as easy as if you just let it be. You never know when something may catch your eye.

Anything else you would like to communicate or share with couples about who your business?

Booking a makeup artist can be daunting to some and it shouldn’t be! Believe it or not most of my clients don’t wear makeup, and if they do, very little on a regular basis. That is OK! Our goal is to enhance your natural beauty without making you feel like someone other than yourself. We are here to accentuate your features, not transform them. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be specific with what you want. And if you’re clueless, we’ve got you too! Enjoy the process!

THE BLISS

ENGAGEMENT: 32 months

WEDDING MONTH: August

STARTING BUDGET: $30,000 ENDING BUDGET: $35,000

STARTING GUEST COUNT: 250 ENDING GUEST COUNT: 165

FIRST LOOK: No

FIRST DANCE SONG: “LOVE” – Nat King Cole

PROPOSAL:

Wes took me to Mexico after graduating nursing school. Our last night I thought we were taking sunset photos at the beach, but Wes had arranged a private dinner. He hired a photographer and proposed on the pier!

CHOOSING A VENUE:

Covid changed all of our plans. We legally got married in 2020 and had our reception in 2021. Hilton Lexington/Downtown was not our original venue, but it all worked out! Their staff was amazing, we loved having all of our food and drink included at the venue and loved the convenience of being Downtown Lexington!

IMPORTANT ELEMENTS:

We included a lot of personal touches in our wedding day. We had a sign with our dog’s face, custom UK jerseys with our last name and a Batman logo on our cake. Plus, Wes and I worked with a dance company in Cincinnati where we now live to choreograph two dances!

Know Your

To know me is to know that I am a family girl, my husband and four kids are my world. I also am a working mom and I love my career. I have worked in sales since I was fifteen and with each job, I’ve had it has only made me stronger, more passionate and knowledgeable. In the event industry

I have done almost everything there is to do from helping put up a tent, to pulling stakes, bleaching linen, producing wedding masterpieces and helping the best brides and grooms create magic. Every day is a new adventure that I look forward to.

How many years have you been in business?

Purdon Rentals has been in business since 1974 and I have been with the company for 2 years.

If you didn’t own your current business, what would you do?

Something in sales. I love interacting with people and getting them exactly what they want. Connecting with people is a gift. Sales are a large part of my background before I started in the event rental industry. I can’t imagine a day where I don’t get to meet new people and learn their story.

Favorite product to work with? Linens! You don’t realize the importance or the drama you can present with just a table covering. I love all the colors, patterns, and fabrics we offer. It can make any event pop!

Favorite colors for an event?

Bold red or soft pink.

How many couples do you work with each year?

Thousands! We provide many different services and everyone is looking for something different. Some couples we provide full-service rentals for like tent, tables, chairs, linens and more and for some couples that have an indoor venue we may only provide linens.

What lead you to pursue event design? I’ve been in different aspects of the event world for a long time. Weddings is where I found my passion. The whole process of helping a couple make their day a perfect reflection of them is priceless.

What do you love about the wedding industry?

I love when couples come in with a blank slate. We start from the ground up and make their vision come to life. Bringing details and color to such a special day is part of what I love most about the wedding industry.

What makes your company different? We want Purdon Rentals to be a unique rental experience so we have an extensive inventory with infinite possibilities and excellent customer service.

What all does Purdon Rentals offer? We have tents, tables, chairs, linen, dinnerware, catering equipment, and glassware. We also have custom lighting and draping options.

Favorite season for weddings? Winter! I have a love affair with snow. I think it is magical and can provide a fairytale backdrop to an event.

Where do you draw your inspiration? Inspiration can come from anywhere. I draw inspiration from a lot of places in my life. Especially the couples I meet and other vendors I get to work with.

Anything else you would like to communicate or share with couples about who you are or your business? I love the unique challenges and possibilities that come from every wedding we are a part of. Large or small, I love planning and executing the perfect event.

Know Your

Dani Dunmire was born and raised in Northern California and has danced professionally and taught across the country for over 15 years. She holds a BFA in Dance from the University of California - Irvine, and has danced for Celebrity Cruises, ballet companies, and commercially. In addition, she has back up danced for country artists, and toured with the Utah Ballroom Dance Company. She has a strong passion for teaching and coaching all levels and ages. She loves figuring out how people learn. When she’s not working with couples to prepare for a wedding or spoiling her pup, she’s teaching ballet at local dance studios, leading group fitness classes around town, and is the head coach for a high school dance team in Lexington, KY.

How many years have you been in business?

I have been teaching dance for 15 years. I started working with friends who wanted to feel confident during their first dance, how to do a few simple moves and maybe a dip - things that would make great photos. Through word of mouth, I would teach lessons on weekends and loved being able to help people feel better about dancing on their big day. When I moved to Nashville in 2015, I realized there was a need for someone who specializes in wedding dances and could teach in an approachable way that didn’t rely on a ballroom syllabus. First Dance Nashville was born! In the fall of 2019, I relocated to Lexington and decided to open up First Dance Lexington out of my home studio.

Favorite dance style to teach?

Basics of partnering, swing and salsa

Favorite dance style you enjoy for yourself? My first true love in dance was ballet.

On average, how many couples do you work with each year?

I work with about 50 couples in person over the course of a year. I recently launched my virtual customized video series that will allow me to help more couples outside of the Bluegrass!

What do you love about the bridal industry?

It sounds cheesy, but I love love. Being able to work with couples to help them feel confident on their special day is so rewarding. Everyone comes together for this ONE big event!

What makes your company different?

First Dance Lexington is a completely customizable experience. At First Dance Lexington we can throw out the rule book and teach couples based on their goals, learning style and level. If they only have the time and budget for one lesson, they will leave that one lesson feeling confident to step onto the dance floor on your wedding day. We understand that their goal may not be to learn perfect waltz technique, but rather to learn moves that they will be able to execute in a wedding dress to avoid those two minutes of the “middle school sway”.

How do you kick start your relationship with a couple?

Before their first lesson, they will fill out a short form. This is their chance to share any vision they may have, as well as give me any details of their wedding dress that they feel might affect their movement (this way, we won’t have to discuss the dress in front of their fiancé). I always like to start the first lesson with simple partnering exercises to help break the ice and get everyone laughing and having fun.

Where do you usually meet with couples?

I have an in-home dance studio (dream come true!) where we can meet. In addition, I offer visits to their home and venue for an additional fee. If we need more space, say for all the parents or even the whole wedding party, then I have relationships with local dance studios to use their studio for the lesson.

Best advice for couples?

DON’T GET SICK OF YOUR FIRST DANCE SONG! You can practice your dance moves to other songs. The moves might be quicker, or slower, but that’s ok. The important thing is that you are working on your partnering skills, communicating with one another and feeling confident doing the moves. You will want your first dance song to feel fresh and exciting in the moment, so don’t over-practice it to the point that you lose joy in the song.

Where do you draw your inspiration?

I draw my inspiration from speaking with my clients. Their story and energy influence the moves I give them to create their first dance.

Anything else you would like to communicate or share with couples about who you are or your business?

I know the thought of taking dance lessons might be completely out of your comfort zone for you and/or your partner, but that’s even more of a reason to take one! You and your partner will bond as a couple, reduce wedding planning stress, and laugh a lot all while gaining confidence to dance during your wedding and avoid awkward, mundane dance moves. One 45-minute private lesson can make all the difference! Also, you will have a bunch of pictures and videos of your first dance, let’s make sure they’re keepers!
