By its very nature a river belongs to more than one people, place and time. Our Fox is no exception. The water flowing into and out of it is a resource we can’t create or destroy; we can only attempt to manage its uses, its quality. In observance of Earth Day we examine the local conscience for protecting “Our Waters, Our Fox” — and assess our part in managing what covers 70% of the planet’s surface, particularly the 10,000 gallons per second that flow through Elgin.

Ancient Ice and Our Fox River Watershed Over 11,000 years ago there was an icy phenomenon of nature that covered and shaped most of what is now Canada and what we now call our Upper Midwest. This included most of Wisconsin for which that icy force now bears that name, The Wisconsin Glaciation Episode.

Artist: Timothy King Timothy King is an “en plein air” painter in the tradition of on-site painting through direct observation. His pastel drawings and oil paintings of Elgin and the surrounding Midwest landscape exude the sense of a modernism explored by Cezanne in the 19th Century. He has the unique ability to discover the essence of the landscape. He finds a depth of space from foreground to background by the nature of the light. He creates what appears to be a simplicity in the landscape.

Timothy studied at the Kansas City Art Institute with Wilbur Niewald, and Stanley Lewis, earning a BFA in 1981. He received an MA in painting at the University of Tulsa, and an MFA in painting at Northern Illinois University. Timothy’s work has been exhibited in Chicago, locally and nationally, notably in New York at the Bowery Gallery, as well as at the AlbrechtKemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph, MO. He is a founding member of the artist collective, the Midwest Paint Group (Midwest-paint-group.org). His work is in the collection of the Sheldon Swope Museum of Art in Terra Haute, Indiana and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Museum. Timothy is represented by Kate Hendrickson Works on paper, in Chicago. Timothy lives in Elgin and teaches at Kishwaukee College in Malta where he teaches a summer course titled, Landscape Drawing in Pastels. You may contact him at timothy.king@kishwaukeecollege.edu.

In any event it was that ancient ice — by its dozing, gouging and grinding, as it advanced to the south, then its melting, flooding, leveling and percolating, as it receded to the north — that left us with not only the geography of most of the state of Wisconsin, but much of the Upper Midwest and the Northeast of the U.S. That includes the Great Lakes, as well as the less dramatic origins and upper reaches of our own Fox River Watershed. That is, the ground that drains to our Fox River’s headwaters in the Halbach Swamp, about 15 miles northwest of Milwaukee. While further south in the Watershed, in both Wisconsin and Illinois, the melt also left spectacular deposits of moraines and kames, as well as unseen but massive

gravel fields just below layers of top soil. Indeed, as it melted it also flooded further into Illinois, leaving effluvial plains, which in our time provided for vast areas highly suitable for agriculture. And it is all these landforms which now absorb rainfall, which along with the courser gravel and finer sands under them, filter that rainfall, which recharge our aquifers, wetlands and the many tributaries of Our Fox and the river itself. Our Fox River Watershed is some 223 miles long, from the headwaters of Halbach Swamp, to The Fox’s mouth where it flows into the Illinois River at Ottawa. As such, the Fox travels through some older geography and landforms that were not reached by the Wisconsin glacier, but retain the work of still older forces and much longer periods of erosion that have left rock outcroppings and dells, similar to the Wisconsin Dells and Driftless areas.

Many Waters and The Good Life, Then As one might suspect, the waters of the Upper Midwest, including those of the Fox River Watershed were never better than after the melt off of the glacier and their eventual formation of the water bodies and streams which still support a robust ecology. Then, however, also included the human ecology of the First Peoples that preceded the glaciation, and others who were still here many millenia later in more developed, civilized settlements, greeting the migrations of both indigenous and Euro-Americans from the East and North. These later times were still good times for the Many Waters,

Great blue heron on the Fox River. Source: friendsofthefoxriver.org when the indigenous across the continent were still integral to the rest of nature that surrounded them, and upon which they knew they and all other life depended. In retrospect, theirs was a natural, ecological ethos. That is, ways of thought, feeling and living with nature that was time-honored, respectful of it, even reverent, especially of water for all the life-supporting purposes it served. Like us now, it quenched their thirst, helped them cook and clean, supplied them food, lent speed to their waterborne transportation, and for the more settled, helped them grow and raise their plants and livestock. It served all these purposes with no intervening treatment and certainly was as beautiful to them, as it is to us today. The indigenous view of what surrounded and supported them and their good life was without a concept of owning. As their traditions are told, there was no gathering, hunting, fishing, growing or extracting on any scale with adverse impacts, but rather only what met their immediate and seasonal needs, and they were grateful for it and left plenty for regeneration. But of course, that was then, which had been that way for many millennia, and was unchanged when Europeans landed in the 15th century. Even after the early migrations of those would-be Americans, along with those of other indigenous peoples, driven from the East, the Upper Midwest remained largely unsullied, if not pristine, well into the 19th and even the early 20th century, at least for the rural and remote. Yes, that was then. and then was good or certainly better, ecologically. But then, the rest of this story is about now.

Our Waters, Our Fox – “Impaired”

April 22, 8am

“Impaired?” What does this mean? Who has said so? How did this happen? Webster’s New World Dictionary implies that in its past tense the meaning of impaired is akin to “injured”, “damaged” or “deteriorated”. Regarding Our Fox, all of the above still apply, according to relatively recent reporting of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) to the U.S. Congress. How this came to be is not a very long story. After all we’re not a very old nation, as nations go. So the question of “how” demands its answer. Meaning, if we want to take some responsibility for what’s happened to the ecology of the planet in recent centuries, including Our Fox, it’s pretty clear, it’s Humankind which has damaged the natural habitat, which we still depend on for our very existence. Indeed, as the preamble to this story states above, “Our Fox is no exception.” In fact, at one time the Fox was listed as “among the 10 most endangered rivers in America.” So, bad as it sounds, “Impaired,” in this case also means somewhat improved. To be more specific as to how all this happened, it was the usual pattern of growth and development, which started with tiny settlements and villages, which in turn grew into towns, and some into cities. In our area that might include Gilberts, less than 100 souls in the mid-20th century, a virtually harmless country hamlet until the 1970’s. Or an early industrial village like Carpentersville of a few hundred souls, with wooden water wheel power for its Illinois Iron & Bolt Works, until

the construction of its dam for generating electricity for Star Manufacturing. Or East Dundee with its Haeger Pottery, which used spring water, to turn clay and slip into their famous products and the waste from those processes into unfiltered effluent. Or Elgin, which at one time, hosted the heavy industry of the Woodruff & Edwards foundry. Moreover, the Fox didn’t become endangered or impaired only by the impacts of industrial pollution. For there were decades upon decades, before and after the advent of indoor plumbing, when human waste was drained or piped straight into tributaries of the Fox and the Fox itself. Indeed under-capacitized and over-worked treatment plants, resulting in under-treatment of effluent and e. coli are a present problem. Clearly, the Fox has had to carry a burden of pollutants for a long time and the load on treatment plants for drinking water at the front end of our water use, and release of treated effluent after our use, is still mounting. As Gary Mechanic,

Executive Director of Friends of the Fox River has so aptly implied, the popular wisdom of the past that “the solution to pollution is dilution” is now an obsolete notion, considering the chemical nature of what leaves our homes and businesses. Much of this bad news may not be news to many readers of this story, and so it won’t be labored further. Moreover not all the news of this story is bad. For in recent years the quality of the Fox has improved, albeit not by accident. So we’re going to say more about that, as it would seem the quality of our future may well depend upon the sort of research and educational efforts which have helped make that improvement in the first place.

To the Good News The good news is that there are some very able professionals working in very dedicated organizations, to best understand the ecology of Our Fox Watershed, to help improve its quality. The list of these professionals is long, while that of the organizations in which they work, though not

as long, in sum are too much to treat meaningfully here. (See page six.) Such being the case, we’ll try to proffer something significant about two of the leading organizations and their work, and some of their leaders, primarily those who are common to or have history with both organizations, which we think speaks to their private as well as their professional dedication. One of these organization, incorporated as a 501 (c)(3) Not For Profit (NFP) in 1990, is Friends of the Fox River (FOFR). They originated in the Elgin/ Dundee area and work from the Schweitzer Environmental Center in Dundee Township. The second organization is the Fox River Study Group, also incorporated as an NFP (2003) with its mailing address in Oswego, but whose meeting places vary. The Friends’ work is on behalf of the entire watershed. The FRSG’s abbreviates at the Illinois state line but also reaches to the mouth of the Fox at Ottawa. It seems fair to say that the Friends’ leading work and stron-

gest thrust is educational, particularly with school districts, ranging from Crystal Lake to Aurora, with D-300 and U-46 among them. However FOFR also fields a Watershed stream monitoring program, river cleanups and varied annual and special events. It counts the famous James F. Phillips among its early members. Still the mentioned emphasis on education is best reflected in the work of its longtime President & CEO, Gary Swick, a retired D-300 environmental science teacher and present instructor at Northern Illinois University. Swick’s methods rest on an obviously passionate enjoyment of the Fox and his professional belief in experiential education (“Get ‘em in the stream!” being a longtime theme). Swick recently delivered a presentation to other Friends and supporters this past January at the Schweitzer Center. It was aptly titled “The State of the Fox and Friends”. Not surprisingly it was educational (as well as funny), confirming that though the

river was still impaired, there was also with a lot of recent data indicating it was improving. He offered data to reinforce that claim, but summed it up in his characteristic style, stating wryly about the improving fish population: “Fish don’t lie.” There was much more to take away, including a very important point, that it will be cultural change, at the level of household and other properties that can help significantly to further improvement of the Fox’s water quality. Some measures mentioned were rain barrels, rain gardens, vegetated swales, and porous drives and walkways. The concept here was that runoff from roofs, paving and even that from lawns, which ultimately leaves properties, has within it and collects all sorts and manner of pollutants on its way to storm drains on onward into the river, something that can obviously be headed off with some consideration for the Fox. In a subsequent conversation for this story, Swick shifted from storm water management to the

problems presented by obsolete dams, of which there are fifteen remaining in the Watershed. These dams hold back sediment in addition to water, which darkens it, and in turn absorbs sunlight, holding heat and raising temperature. The warm water is not good for most game and panfish and other living things indigenous to Midwest riparian ecology. More education, which was convincing.

5

Chapter. She has done a thoroughgoing job of laying out the status of the problem, as well as plans and methods to manage it (“Monitoring and Implementation in the Fox River Basin”).

Clearly, not only do we need to take more personal responsibility for what happens to the rain that falls on our roofs and private patches, but also — for the politically inclined — to persuade officials and the public to remove more dams to accelerate improvement of Our Fox.

The problem is soluble nutrients from fertilizers, carried by runoff from agricultural lands (and lawns), which literally sheds into the tributaries of the Fox and in some cases directly into the river itself. It is now the leading cause of impairment, as the nutrients over-feed naturally occurring algae, which when it blooms, depletes oxygen needed by aquatic life and taints the taste and odor of drinking water. It also looks bad, as it concentrates and collects in the driest times of the year, at catchy places along the banks of the Fox.

There is another very pressing problem which has been tackled head on by the FRSG, Chaired by Cindy Skrukrud, a former CEO of the FOFR and current Clean Water Program Director for the Sierra Club’s Illinois

Regarding the effects of the algae on drinking water, Kyla Jacobsen, Director for the City of Elgin’s Water Department was the first person interviewed for this story and the takeaway from Kyla, beside comments to

Swick’s and Skrukrud’s work, was that the treatment of the algae, especially in the dry season, is expensive for a number of reasons and of course those costs are passed directly to purchasers of Elgin water. And that is not only to Elgin residents but also those purchasing water under agreement with the City, such as the Village of Sleepy Hollow. We’d only say this: Jacobsen serves as an officer/board member for both NFPs first mentioned above, and Swick heads FOFR and is a Board member of FRSG. Skrukrud’s title and web presentation spoke to us for itself. And that brings us to our last point. Again, all mentioned in this story are certainly not the only ones, working at these problems and improvements, but we hope mentioning their efforts and their oganizations makes it clear that things can be done to change and heal Our Waters and Our Fox, and all we have mentioned are certainly open to all the help that can be mustered from like-minded among us all. —DT

The City of Elgin & The Fox River The City of Elgin began serving its residents as a community water supplier in the late 1880s. At that time, the Fox River was used as the source of drinking water. The fact that no treatment was performed on the raw water leads one to speculate that at that time the Fox River must have been a pristine source. The Water Department facilities were located on the east bank of the Fox River at what is now the Slade Avenue Pumping Station. The facilities then consisted of a small pump building. The water was pumped from the river directly to the customer’s home via water mains made from wood planks. This system carried Elgin into the 20th century. In 1900, waterborne diseases became prevalent in the Fox River, likely due to the fact that the once virgin river was being used more and more. The surrounding area was growing, and most communities along the river used the Fox not only as a source of drinking water but also for recreation and industry. This contributed to the downfall of its water quality and the city decided to find an alternate source of raw water. The next logical choice was groundwater.

The City of Elgin Deep Wells In 1901, the city drilled its first deep well at the Slade Avenue site. During the next couple of years, the city had three more deep wells drilled to a depth of 2,000 feet, tapping into the Cambrian-Ordovician Aquifer. An aquifer is a supply of water far below the surface of the earth and is a result of water seeping through dirt, sand, and rock. In effect, the water filtering through the earth is cleansed and collects below. The Cambrian-Ordovician Aquifer lies under much of northern Illinois.

Fox River Treatment Facilities In 1936, the city built a treatment facility at the Slade Avenue site to treat the well water. This facility consisted of settling basins, chemical feed systems, and sand filters. By 1940, the city was producing an average of 2.29

million gallons a day of well water. This was the city’s only source of treated water until 1963, when the Airlite Street Water Treatment Plant was built to service the quickly expanding west side. By 1965 the city was providing an average of 5.46 million gallons of water a day. As Elgin grew, so did its demand for natural resources, such as water. A growing number of communities were sprouting up in northern Illinois and drilling into the Cambrian-Ordovician Source: friendsofthefoxriver.org Aquifer. This put a strain on the decided in 1979 to build a new aquifer, similar to many people treatment facility that could sticking a straw into a giant glass process Fox River water at a rate of water and trying to take a sip of 16 million gallons a day. at the same time. In 1970 Elgin was taking an average 7 million gallons of water a day from this aquifer. It was time to plan for the future, as the aquifer’s level was dropping at an alarming rate. As the water table dropped, the more it cost in electricity to pump the water to the surface.

Searching for Alternative Sources of Water In the mid 1970s, Elgin began exploring for alternate sources of raw water. Officials even considered buying water from the City of Chicago, which uses Lake Michigan as its raw source. The city decided it did not want to depend upon someone else for such a precious commodity, especially since there was an excellent raw source right in its backyard, the Fox River. By now the river had gone full circle and was on the upswing in terms of water quality. This change can be traced to the 1960s when ecological awareness was brought to the forefront. It was

The Riverside Treatment Facility In 1982 the Riverside Treatment Facility was completed on the west bank of the Fox River directly across from the Slade Avenue Treatment facility. The city now had an asset that many communities only dreamed of: a virtually unlimited reliable source of raw water. The decision to return to the Fox River as a water source has continued to help Elgin attract large corporations and developments, many of which would not locate here without an ample water supply. When the new facility began service, the Slade Avenue plant ceased treating water, but the facility was maintained until 1990 for its water storage and pumping capabilities. In 1990 the old Slade Avenue Treatment Facility was razed, and a new facility was built in its place. This facility houses the Water Department’s meter division and still serves as a pumping station. — Source: cityofelgin.org

150 Years of Learning It has been 150 years since St. John’s Lutheran Church in Elgin, then just

seven years old, decided to open a school. Classes were originally held in a one-room schoolhouse and the pastor handled all instruction. This 2016-17 school year is the 150th anniversary of the founding of the school, and St. John’s School has been acknowledging the milestone with events throughout the year: tying 150 prayers on ribbons to the fence between the church and school at the start of the year, decorating 150 pumpkins in time for the church and school’s annual Lutherfest, lighting 150 luminarias for mid-week Advent services, and working on an oral history project in which current students interview alumni from different generations. A special church service for the anniversary, with all of St. John’s choirs, will take place Wednesday, May 10, at 7 pm. A major project for the school each year is its annual Auction. For this 150th anniversary, no holds are barred: a multi-course dinner will feature recipes spanning close to 15 decades; the “Middle School Players” are readying skits that replicate famous performances from live monologues (Mark Twain), radio (Abbott & Costello), TV (“I Love Lucy”, “Monty Python”, “Saturday Night Live”), and the Internet; a playlist with songs from each era is being developed; and the best bakers among church and school constituents will contributing “celebrity desserts.” The Auction itself will offer a wide range of

The Chamber Blues Is it blues? Is it classical? Few can claim to have forged an entirely original genre of music, but in 1966, Corky Siegel did just that. Guiding the blues of Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters out of the smoky cavern of Big John’s and onto the stages of the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic and beyond, the harmonica-playing mad scientist had the tuxedo-and-gown crowd on its feet, clamoring for more of this blues-classical alchemy. These days, the harmonica virtuoso and composer is continent-hopping with Indian percussion and string quartet in Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues, continuing to bring classical and blues fans shoulder-to-shoulder… and obliterating musical categorization in the process. —Doyle Armbrust On April 8, EYSO joins forces with Corky Siegel, Chicago’s legendary blues harmonica player, composer, and singer/ songwriter, for a collaborative performance breaking barriers between blues and classical music. Siegel’s Chamber Blues ensemble has garnered inter-

national acclaim and has been a beloved fixture of the Chicago music scene for decades. “Gritty Chicago Blues and rarefied classical chamber music might not seem like a match made in heaven,” the Chicago Tribune wrote, “until you’ve heard Corky Siegel bring the two together… a crowning achievement.” This performance features EYSO’s Brass Choir and Youth Symphony in exciting selections from both genres, including a world premiere by Composer in Residence Ethan T. Parcell. Siegel will join EYSO for two rehearsals ahead of the concerts, and will present a free, public masterclass on the afternoon of April 8. Tickets for the concert are available at the ECC Arts Center Box Office or online at tickets. elgin.edu. For more details check the FEED, or visit eyso.org.

Elgin Cultural Arts Commission Apply Yourself

Hey Artists You know that feeling when you have an idea for a project that you know would be super cool but it feels impossible because you don’t have the money to throw into it? If only there were a group of people who you could pitch your idea to that could fund it. If only there were, say, a thousand bucks lying around for you to just make art happen... Well, I’m an artist too, and, oy, have I been in that boat. But I have pretty fantastic news for you. That group of people? They really exist. And that thousand bucks? It’s just waiting for you. The City of Elgin has a grant made for individual artists like you and me, and the city’s Cultural Arts Commission will literally throw money at you if apply with a convincing, creative, awesome idea for an artistic project. I have received this grant twice — once for a music and dance collaboration and once to present a solo recital. And I’m here to tell you that the process has been painless, simple, and — dare I say, even pleasant!

Write up a couple of pages describing the project and proving its innovative qualities, the ways that it will impact the community, its logistical feasibility, and the opportunities it will provide to both the artists involved and their audience. Include a simple budget and a few of your work samples. Then go into a Cultural Arts Commission meeting to tell the fine folks there a little more about the project in person and answer any questions they may have. And that’s it! Easy peasy. The Commission is always eager to fund new artists that can make a unique impact on Elgin, and if you are that artist and you’re interested in applying, my advice to you is to be sincere, be enthusiastic, and be realistic. Good luck — I can’t wait to see your art!

You may have seen the Call for Art on the ECAC’s facebook page and website. This year the ECAC aims to select a 2D and a 3D piece of public art. Each selected proposal will receive an honorarium up to $5,500. Be sure to check the website for the application: CityofElgin.org/publicart. Applications are due by May 1, 2017 at 5:00pm to City Hall, Attn: Cultural Arts Commission, 150 Dexter Ct., Elgin, IL, 60120. Know an artist who should apply? Here are a few helpful tips for the applicants: • Check out the Public Art Plan Forum presentations to get a feel for the overall ideas of what the ECAC will be looking for. • The ECAC will provide assistance in the form of installation help, maintenance for the lifetime of the work, and signage. • The budget should include all aspects of the artwork design, fabrication, and installation, so be sure to include an Artist Fee in the budget. • Try to be as specific as pos-

sible in the details. What type and brand of materials will you use and why? • Will the community be engaged in any way? If so, be sure to explain how you plan to achieve this. • Is the work going to be for sale? If so, be sure to keep that in mind during the design process- we can’t sell a mural that is put directly onto the concrete! • Works that are for sale will get 90% of the asking price! The ECAC will take a 10% commission to fund the maintenance and care of future works. • You may be asked to come and speak to the ECAC about your proposal, so be sure to present a well thought out and fully planned proposal. • Contact the Staff Liaison, Amanda Harris, with any questions or concerns well before the deadline. Don’t wait until the last minute! You can reach her at Harris_A@cityofelgin.org or 847-931-6019. • Incomplete or last minute applications won’t be accepted. Be sure to get applications in no later than May 1, 2017 @5:00pm!

— Sara Sitzer, Freelance Cellist and Chamber Music on the Fox Co-Artistic Director See Sara next at BACH UNHINGED, March 28, 2017 7:00pm at the Seigle Gallery at Elgin Artspace Lofts. Tickets are $20, students $10.

Harriet Tubman: The New Face on the 20-Dollar Bill After escaping from slavery, herself, Harriet Tubman helped numerous enslaved people escape to freedom through the Underground Railroad. She assisted John Brown in recruiting abolitionists for the raid on Harpers Ferry, led a Union Army raid in South Carolina that liberated hundreds of slaves during the Civil War, and advocated for women’s suffrage after the war. Harriet Tubman’s extraordinary achievements have received renewed attention because of the selection of her image to replace President Andrew Jackson’s on the twenty-dollar bill. Phillips’ tactics helped launch the environmentalist movement worldwide and were later imitated by groups like Greenpeace. Although he would now be considered an “eco-terrorist,” The Fox was never violent and rarely confrontational. Education was always at the heart of his method: his stunts were aimed directly at law-breakers and always carried an explanation of the nature and impact of their offense.

One of his more infamous incidents involved the McWhorter Chemical Co. just upstream from Elgin’s water system intake. The Fox collected buckets of harmful chemical residue scraped from the river bottom and dumped it on the building, then taped a huge poster to the office door outlining the problem and the reasons for his actions.

In the early 70’s Phillips enlisted the help of students and other kindred spirits whom he called “Friends of the Fox.” They joined him in his “Armour-Dial kills our water” product labeling campaign, and staged mock funerals for the Fox River. That network of support later evolved into the locally-based “Friends of the Fox River.”

His first target was a Dial soap factory in Montgomery, which was dumping toxic chemicals into a local stream. To send a message, he plugged their drain pipe to cause waste to back up onto the factory floor. On an impulse, he sketched the face of a fox as a kind of signature, representing the river he was trying to protect. From that point on as an environmental activist, he assumed the secret identity of “The Fox.” EA AR

Don’t Give the IRS More than you Should... Seek Professional Tax Advice! Who will prepare your 2016 tax return in the 2017 tax season? Is it time for a change? • Are you tired of preparing your own taxes, and finding it more difficult and time consuming? FLP Tax Service saves you time, money, and aggravation. Is your old tax preparer hard to reach and never returns phone calls, during and after tax season? FLP Tax Service staff answers phone and email messages within 48 hours, even after April 15th. • Are you paying high fees that are constantly increasing, even if your tax returns get easier and are less complicated? FLP fees are based not by the number of tax forms it prints, but on the complexity of your return. Fees are reviewed annually, and adjusted as needed. • Is your tax preparer not up to speed with the tax laws or tax software technology? FLP tax preparers are continually attending tax update schools to earn continuing education credit, to be ready prior to the start of each new tax season. Does your preparer offer three ways to get your taxes done? 1. By scheduling a sit down interactive tax appointment. Taxes are typically completed within a 1 1/2 hr. appointment or sooner, depending on whether you brought all your info. 2. By remote tax processing. Get your taxes done without leaving your home. Remote tax preparation is available using a state of the art secure web based portal system. Scan and upload your documents over the FLP Secure File portal. No need to get out of the house. Phone interviews are done at a convenient time (for you) to finish your return. 3. By mailing your tax info or by dropping it off. We will process it quickly, and before it’s completed, you will be contacted to make sure that you agree with the results. Note: you will always get to speak with a live tax preparer to complete your taxes. FLP Tax Service is a home-based business, celebrating 11 years of providing personal and accurate tax preparation. Our fees are typically one third or less than CPA firms and Franchise Tax Firms. Low overhead keeps our fees down. FLP is a Member of the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce (EAC), for 11 years, and Member of the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP), for 20 years. You will get a 100% Client Guarantee of Satisfaction. There never are any extra charges for e-filing, IRS direct deposits, or copies of your tax returns (paper or pdf). We’re always looking for more awesome painters who are up for the challenge, apply online now at artbattle.com to participate as one of the featured artists! See you there! Art Battle is live competitive painting. Painters create the best work they can in 20 minutes. As they work, patrons move around the easels, closely watching the creative process. 1,000 Shareholder Household Challenge

A Slice of Cheesecake

ELGIN’S MAYOR KAPTAIN CHALLENGED US TO REACH

1,000 SHAREHOLDER HOUSEHOLDS WE ONLY NEED

By Mary Ellen Goodwill Somebody paid for my slice of cheesecake down at the library this afternoon. I had brought in my waxed paper cup of loose change (covered with balled up napkins) to pay a late fee and had it with me in the café where I asked the young man, “How much for a slice of cheesecake?” After a quick calculation he said, “$3.24 with tax.” Oh, okay, I said. I’ll see if I have enough, whereupon I walked over to the side counter with the sugars and stir sticks, dumped out my change and began counting dimes and the one quarter. “Got it!” I told the kid. “Oh, it’s paid for,” he said. “Huh?” I responded. “The guy paid for it.” “What guy?” “The guy who just left?” “Left? Where’d he go?”

“Some guy paid for my cheesecake?” “Yup.” I dropped ten dimes in the tip jar, walked outside into the sprinkly rain and looked all around for a guy who might be grinning. No one. It’s not that I don’t have more money than what’s in the cup although, frankly, today I do not, but maybe it was my attire: XXL old red flannel hanging long over aqua blue fleece pajama pants, battered white sneaks and my pink and white knit cap. I live just blocks from the library so usually I don’t bother to change my writing/reading/ hanging out attire for whatever might be considered more suitable.

Was it that? My attire? Who knows why some guy paid for my cheesecake.

“I don’t know. “How’d he know I was buying cheesecake?” “He was behind you in line.”

Expression: Poetry Boxes and Little Free Libraries

Word on the Street Small wooden boxes with glass doors, filled with art and literature, are beginning to dot the local landscape. It’s an effort by neighbors to encourage pedestrian culture by providing something to stir your consciousness as you handle the day’s business, take Fifi on her daily rounds, or log a few thousands steps toward your FitBit goal. Most of these are book-sharing fixtures called Little Free Libraries (LFLs). Sized somewhere between that of a doghouse and a birdhouse, they are typically mounted on a post about four feet high, along a residential sidewalk, public path or in front of a place of business. The concept was born in 2009 when Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin built a miniature oneroom schoolhouse as a memorial to his mother, a teacher who loved to read. He set it on a post in his front yard, and filled it with books to be shared with friends and neighbors on a “take one, return one” basis. It became a movement when Bol teamed up with Rick Brooks of UW-Madison and began giving away Little Free Libraries as a social enterprise in the spirit of Andrew Carnegie, the philanthropist who funded the construction of over 2,500 free public libraries in the early twentieth century. They sought to exceed Carnegie’s number, and started maintaining a charter registry. By the end of 2011, their Wisconsin-based efforts had established 400 LFLs, and there are now over 50,000, registered in every U.S. state and more than seventy countries. The Elgin Poetry Box. Little Did You Know Wherever you live in the Elgin area, there’s a Little Free Library within minutes of your home, set up by stewards who believe in Bol & Brooks’ original mission: to inspire a love of reading, build community and spark creativity. They are open 24/7 and require no memberships or ID cards. Inside, you may find fiction or nonfiction, adults’ or children’s books, classics or new releases — it all depends on the tastes and interests of the steward and the LFL’s other patrons. “All credit for this Little Free Library is due to my mother Darlene, who has spent her career not just teaching but impacting children’s lives!” writes Blake Motl of East Dundee, whose LFL is located inside the Dundee Township Visitor’s Center (aka “The Depot”). His words echo the sentiments of the first LFL steward: “She was an amazing teacher and is even a more amazing mother.” “The Elgin Breakfast Rotary was the driver behind our Little Free Library,” says Carlton Kellenberger of Kellenberger Auto Service. “They were installing them in a few areas around town and thought our location would be a good fit. As far as I am aware, we have the first one in downtown Elgin.” Rotary Clubs in the area have joined the LFL movement and have plans to place many more. Besides the Elgin Club’s two other LFLs — at the Taylor YMCA and Zion Lutheran Church — Dundee Township and Carpentersville Clubs have placed LFLs near parks and other public

spaces in their towns, including the Carpentersville Village Hall. It’s a project that reflects Rotary’s objectives of service, friendship and goodwill.

The Purpose and Promise of Education

Put Literacy in its Place The academic minds who advanced the LFL movement knew that children’s reading achievement depended on their access to books, especially at home, and that at least half of American low-income families did not have any books for their kids at home. They believed that Little Free Libraries could improve that access in areas where books were scarce. In our area, non-English children’s books are scarce. “Our library is located in the Reading Garden at Sunny Hill Elementary,” says volunteer Robin Ross-Henning. “We serve a community of nearly 450 school-age readers at the school, including many English learners.” The Sunny Hill LFL recently received a grant from the Barrington Junior Women’s Club to purchase hundreds of Spanish-language books that will help students develop literacy in their native language first, which strengthens their ability to acquire a second language later. “I am proud to say my LFL gets a lot of attention and a lot of donated books,” says Rich Jacobs, whose “London Calling” LFL is now a landmark in northeast Elgin. He freely circulates adults’ and kids’ books in both Spanish and English without attempting to catalog any of it. “So long as they enjoy the book, that’s what’s important.” “I teach reading to middle school kids in U-46 and see first hand the limited reading ability they come to me with,” says Anna Hallock McEvilly. She led a project in the Shadow Hill neighborhood to place a LFL on her street corner near a park, where she actively manages the collection to maintain seasonal variety. “I just want kids to read!” she stressed, “Screens have become a horrible substitute for reading books.”

Check Out What’s Inside Since the Little Free Libraries of Elgin can’t possibly outsupply the superb Gail Borden Public Library system, most are meant to foster creativity and community through a love of reading. “Our Little Free Library has gotten a moderate amount of use, though it’s still relatively new and a foreign idea to some,” says Kellenberger. “It seems that more books go out than in, but recently I’ve noticed that people are adding new books to our LFL.” The neighbors of North Country Knolls put up a Little Free Library at a busy corner on Lyle Avenue. “Early indications are that the library is getting a good deal of use,” they said. “The turnover of books has been brisk.” And the opportunity for individual expression has never been overlooked by LFL stewards around the world. There is a cottage industry of designers and builders creating LFLs, and of course one-of-a-kind structures appear far and wide.

A Byword “I first discovered a Little Free Library in the neighborhood during one of my evening walks a couple of years ago,” says Tricia Marcella Cimera of

cination with it started a hobby, which became a small business devoted to building poetry boxes for other people, like Cimera. The “Elgin Poetry Box” first popped up on a quiet street on the northeast side in 2010, and went unnoticed until it started getting attention on Facebook. It had its own Facebook page, titled “The Elgin Poetry Box Project,” where curator Anne Faulkner would post a variety of poems and links to poetry and public art. Her vision was to germinate a poetry box move-

Compared to LFLs, the Poetry Box (PB) origin story may not have as clear a starting point, but it does have a definite protagonist and setting: poet David Cooke of greater Portland, Oregon. The former teacher saw a W.B. Yeats poem posted in front of a neighbor’s house and his fas-

BY DAVID COOKE I know what you’re thinking from the way you exhale and your shoulders wilt. It’s written in the shape of your spine, an S hunching slightly toward a C, and I know it’s because I’m still here. The poem has not changed. The rain that wicked up the page is dry. The copies are all gone or worse still here, or worse the poem you left collapses into itself, folds like the faraway fan brought back from the trip you didn’t take. But this is the walk you’ve taken. It untangles you. Still, even if you did not take this walk, you traveled sixteen hundred thousand miles since yesterday, and I don’t know if today’s turning adds a percent or takes it away. It all depends on your latitude. You’ve come this far by stopping here. Are you still here? Or are you right here? Either way you’re right, and the poem is still in need of changing.

ment in Elgin like the one in Portland, where hundreds of them could be discovered along neighborhood streets, or located on an internet map created by Faulkner’s longtime friend Sue. A second box, dubbed the “Slade Avenue Poetry Box,” went up a few blocks away in 2014, where Jeffrey Pierce posted his own works and swapped poems with the Portland Poetry Box patriarch David Cooke. “It’s a good looking poetry box,” Cooke wrote. “I like the mitered frame and the back slanted roof.”

Rhymes Are a-Changin’ The environment was hard on the Elgin boxes at times, and the Elgin Poetry Box is currently on a seasonal hiatus. The Slade Avenue Poetry Box lost its door to a fist in 2015 but has returned stronger. And both boxes have seen their fair share of weath-

“I’ve even had some suggestions tucked behind the plexiglass of my Box, and I’ve created formal displays of these suggestions,” she says. “If the community speaks, I’ll listen.”

Box to Books and Back In “Elginlandia,” the Poetry Box population peaked at three, when a third was set up temporarily in the window of the Soulful Sparrow shop on Douglas Avenue. The movement culminated in a series of chapbooks containing work by local poets, including Pierce and Cimera, published quarterly under the title Elgin MUSE: Anthology of Local Verse. They have been distributed exclusively at the Boxes, LFLs and at poetry events held during the Elgin Literary Festival.
