Artist:

Jade Morem Inspired at an early age by all mediums possible, Jade could be found making her mark. From the ability to hold a crayon and later through college, her creativity shows through art. With a nod to her favorite artists Frida Kahlo and Vanessa Alice, she creates portraits directly from inspiration or conjured from photographs dating as far back as the early 20th century. Using a myriad of mediums, ink is transformed into hair, watercolors into soft backgrounds and acrylics transform faces into living beings. Drawing from the works of Yayoi Kusama she also transforms canvas as a window to the microscopic world. Recreating something as simple as vanilla beans with acrylic will open your eyes to a world rarely seen. Working out of her studio in Chicagoland, her work is on display in Bartlett and Elgin as well as a consistent online presence. Current exhibits include Something Wicked in October, Going Dutch Festival in November and Oddball Art Lab’s Cabinet of Curious Characters in December all at Side Street Studio Arts. Autumn Spice at Arts in Bartlett will continue through October. Visit her on social media @jubajade or stay in touch at GreenJadeDesign@gmail.com

Rough skin identifies a man with a wealth of experience and a loyal work ethic; and long, strong fingers with a one-of-akind palmprint are a record of a lifetime of individuality. It’s all there in one handshake from Jerome Cunningham, the

singer, songwriter, trucker and bass guitar artist who is one of Elgin’s most traveled musicians. “I started hearing music from my dad playing records when I was five years old in St. Louis,” he said. “The record player never stopped playing Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson ... Then, when we moved to Elgin when I was seven, we would go back to St. Louis every weekend, and the records kept spinning: James Brown, Sam Cooke, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Temptations ...” Jerome learned about rhythm by watching his cousin play drums, and taught himself the first few notes on a guitar from Polk Brothers Music in down-

town Elgin. Together with some neighborhood kids, they learned how to be a band by playing songs like “The World is a Ghetto” by WAR. He taught himself to play bass guitar as a student at Elgin High, and latched onto the music he loved: late seventies funk. Teaching and learning among family and friends would become a habit that would propel his music career for forty years and counting. Jerome should have played football at Eastern Illinois University, where he would have joined a young quarterback named Sean Payton and gone to two national championships, but his Air Force recruitment papers had already been signed. So instead, he shared a room at an Air Force base in Germany with a white kid from small town Minnesota, and found common ground by listening to music from each other’s record collections, that ranged from Led Zeppelin and Ted Nugent to Funkadelic and Cameo. Decades later, Jerome still thinks of the kid as his best friend. While stationed in Georgia, he met another airman who showed him how to write and record original music in a studio. That friend would later sign with Warner Brothers and top the Billboard Hot 100 chart in December 1990 with a song he wrote for Stevie B. called “Because I Love You (The Postman Song).” “When I came home out of the service, we had a great funk band called Mystery — we played little funk shows around

Elgin,” he remembers. “Four of us lived in an apartment together. We lived and slept the dream of that moment; we ate, bled, cried ... we loved what we did. That connection, that bond — it was really never just a band.” Jerome’s future bride La Velma was part of that early lineup, and would continue singing with him for years to come, forming a relationship to music that would later be essential to making possible his highest flights in the music industry. “In 1984 I started a racially mixed pop band called The Mixx. It was my first cover band. We covered all the music, and we played all around here. We played the first Battle of the Bands at the Hemmens Auditorium in front of a sold out audience, and mixed songs from Lover Boy, Power Station, Jesse Johnson and ZZ Top — it was crazy. We were breaking down walls — black and white people in the band — people weren’t used to seeing that.”

The urge to create is powerful in young artists with a dream, a talent and an audience. Jerome placed an ad in the Illinois Entertainer and met drummer Eric Adams, then Eric McLear, a gifted keyboard musician with a technical inclination. They formed Colour Huemanity to write and perform original songs. Going on thirty in the late 1980’s, his band mates were just teens and early twenties. “We wrote songs together, but we were starving, because that was original music, it was our own,” he reflected. “But we were getting attention. We had Chicago radio play and a great manager. They had us being the next band to bust out of Chicago. I used to wake up every day thinking we’re about to take off ... you dream about California, and the record labels — that was back when a label really meant a label.” Colour Huemanity was set to appear on a compilation album with Chicago’s other top bands — Smashing Pumpkins, Stabbing Westward, Naked Raygun and Material Issue — but “something happened” to the producer and the project was scrapped. The band lost its drummer and manager to unexpected deaths, and the band broke up in the early 90’s. For the next few years, Jerome and La Velma focused on family, as he coached two young daughters in sports. He returned to football as a coach for the Pop Warner youth

league, where he partnered with “Big Mike” Ledbetter. They would continue to work together at Elgin High, teaching boys the game for twenty years. “I got a call from my good friend Paul to tour with him in a Christian pop rock band called Church of Rhythm,” he remembered. “I said what? A Christian rock band?” Paul said they wanted a funky bass and told him, “yeah, Jerome, they want you to play like Alanis Morrisette/Chili Peppers type of style.” “When I got there with them dudes, we just lit it up. We practiced one time ... it was insane, we just had so much energy. I was the oldest one, but I was the biggest kid.” An old Trailways bus was soon waiting to take the band all over the country, to play in front of thousands, indoors and out, and sign autographs for hours after shows. “It was hard when I left on the first night. I heard my two girls in the back seat of the car crying. It kind of messed me up.” From 1997 to 1998, he spent a couple days at home, then a few weeks on the road. Church of Rhythm made records and videos and was nominated for a Gospel Music Association Dove Award for their song, “Not Perfect.” “Church of Rhythm was the most professional touring act I was ever in,” he reflected. “I had the opportunity to go, and I did it. It was the best time and the hardest time in my life. I was living my dream — the music

part — but it hurt being away from my family. I was the only one married with kids, and I wanted to keep it that way.” When Church of Rhythm broke up and evolved into a new Christian alternative band called Superchick, Jerome turned down the chance to continue life on the road. “If I went with Superchick, I wouldn’t have a chick at home,” he said. But as always, he remained friends with the artists and crew, and even recorded a few tracks with them on a studio project. Superchick’s song “One Girl Revolution” containing Jerome’s original bass lick appeared in the 2001 movie Legally Blonde; he calls it his “couple seconds of fame.” “Those are my good memories that I always have. I survived life on the road, and I kept my family.”

Having contributed so much time and effort to bands, and having shared (or surrendered) so much creative control, the idea of slower-paced solo projects captured his interest next. And the unplanned birth of a special needs son in 2000 meant he needed to balance his musical aspirations with the ongoing obligations of being a dad.

“I always said I would not take money from my family, so I put away $20 here, $50 there, that’s what I did.” The rest is an investment of time in self-education. “Spotify? I don’t really get it, but I got to learn it, because it puts your music everywhere.” The flip side of that is an education in human nature. “I’ve learned to figure out who are the real people to help you, and who’s just trying to shaft you. We got shafted a lot of times, and been lied to. It’s hard, but once you learn it, it’s good — you got every i dotted, every t crossed.”

After reading up on the subject, “I started my own record label, Funkybeam Records, joined BMI publishing, and did my first solo album project called Jam160D.” His network of musician friends included professional and home-based studios and session players who he’d worked with for years. They helped along the way. “As far as the musician part goes, they’re all my friends. That’s what makes it easy, because you know each other, you’re not lying; the connection I have with them is like ... it’s not manufactured, we love each other.” Published out to the internet, a single called “I’m Tired of All This” earned him his first

royalty check for $32, which he keeps in a frame at his house. Although the freedom to write and record on his own schedule, on his own terms, was a creative luxury, “luxury” is really not the right word for it. “You got to know promoters, sometimes you got to pay for playing, and I don’t have the money to do that,” he confessed.

helped him out a lot while I was doing other bands.” One of those bands was his hip-hop rock funk group called Spin Circus, which played rhythmic rock music with rap and vocals. Started in 2007, they recorded original tracks and performed together for eight years while Jerome evolved his song-

Jerome wasn’t done with live performance yet. He got another call from Paul (from Church of Rhythm) about an ongoing series of fill-in gigs with a popular Chicago music experience called 28Days. “He ran that band like Church of Rhythm, like we were on tour,” he said. “We played everything from Frank Sinatra to Prince to Mötley Crüe. I was the only guy working a normal job — the other guys didn’t work — and Paul was dead serious because he did that for a living. I

Sometimes he puts his radio on scan and listens to fragments of music playing on nearby stations. “By the station jumping around, I hear some melodies and get an idea ... I can write a song in my car on the way to practice.” In 2015 after Spin Circus, another group coalesced around a repertoire of classic rock and soul music from the Baby Boomer era. Originally called the Funk Brotherz, the group temporarily adopted the prefix “Alpha Omega” to gain acceptance from people at the churches where many of these musicians played. A couple of initial party appearances expanded into a string of live gigs and festivals, including regular stints at Grand Victoria Casino and the Brotherz’ favorite venue, Danny’s on Douglas. writing skills as the lead contributor. His process is 80% inspiration and 20% discipline. “Some songs come to me in the middle of the night. I get up and talk on my phone, or go into the closet so nobody hears me screaming and yelling. Or if I’m in my truck not moving anywhere, I’ll start going at it and finish when I get home. I don’t try to rhyme things, I just say what I say.” As an artist who doesn’t read or write a single note of written music, he uses alternative methods to convey his ideas. “I write songs in my basement ... I do all the harmonies, the bass, the drum machine, sometimes I do keyboards to give people an idea, like writing a rough draft, you know? Then I show it to the guys, depending on what band I’m in at the time and they pick up the music.” “Back in the old days, I used to call my house and leave a recording. One time my machine messed up and started playing my stuff back, so I had to leave work, go home and unplug my machine!”

Colour Huemanity reunion, December 2019.

Jerome’s Funkybeam Records began publishing artists from across the country and around the world in 2014, and has remained a fertile ground for new music by a briefly reunited Colour Huemanity, and other projects involving his musical friends from the past and present. The latest music is from October Brigade, a collaboration with Eric McLear and female vocalists from Israel and Spain, who exchange recorded tracks over the internet to be mixed in Yorkville and mastered in Los Angeles.

Funky Christians.

He also finds a limitless source of inspiration in his connections with musicians of all ages and abilities, which he invariably refers to as friends. For Accidentally on Purpose, Rec Center, Mike Page, Mike Tafoya, his cousin Westbeezy ... Jerome is a father figure, a fan, or both. For some of those friends, only memories remain. He loves reminiscing about his moments with the late Elgin blues giants Joe Rayfield and Mike Ledbetter. He’s blessed to play bass guitar in the gospel music ministry at Second Baptist Church, where they encourage him to “do it your way, Jerome.”

His favorite project is Funky Christians featuring Graffiti Poets, consisting largely of artists from Spin Circus. As creative producer and songwriter, he describes the music as “Audioslave meets Chili Peppers meets Mötley Crüe meets Rage Against the Machine meets Funkadelic.”

With dozens of published songs, recording credits, albums, and videos, he reflects humbly on his own music, saying, “I’m happy with it, and I’m happy that people kinda like it. Other than that, I’m not chasing those rainbows anymore, you know what I mean? I’m a truck driver, I do what I do.”

Jerome holds nothing back in his lyrics now that are more personal than ever, exploring emotions and spirituality that were shaped by gratitude for his amazing artistic journey, and a few personal tragedies that he seldom talks about.

Though he often remarks about being “old,” it’s just the words of an old soul that reveals the faith of an old man with the dreams of a young man, in the body of a soft-spoken trucker with a big heart and a powerful creative voice. —JP

The Best Ways to Enjoy the Outdoors in the Elgin Area Things to Do Along the Fox River Bike Trails

The Fox River Trail offers more than 40 miles of guaranteed fun. The trail runs beside the scenic Fox River in Northern Illinois, alongside historic railroad lines, crossing six bridges and passing through nature preserves and charming towns. If exploring the area by water is more your speed then hop on a boat and enjoy the Fox River.

The Fox River Bike Trails pass through many forest preserves, offering weary cyclists the perfect excuse to ease off the pedals and soak up the natural beauty of the river. Native flyers you may see include herons, woodpeckers and bald eagles.

The trail is the perfect outing for spirited cyclists, hikers, families and outdoor aficionados. No weather is too extreme to take advantage of the path. If your bike does not have snow tires, break out the snowshoes or cross-country skis if you want to continue exploring in the winter. No matter what brings you to the trails, enjoy the ride!

Need Equipment If you do not have the equipment needed to properly explore the Fox River Trails then check out one of our community partners. Main Street Bicycles in Carpentersville offers bike rentals, while Elgin Bike Community and Village Peddler have bike sales and maintenance. Kayak Myak and South Elgin Canoe are able to outfit you with all of the gear including rentals to explore the trail by water. All of the information to get equipment and plan your trip can be found at www.ExploreElginArea.com/Fox-RiverTrails.

Paddle through West Dundee on your way to Voyageur Landing Forest Preserve just north of Downtown Elgin. The seven-mile trek is perfect for beginners. If you are looking to explore closer to downtown Elgin then put your kayak or canoe in the water at Trout Park River’s Edge and head South to Veteran’s Memorial Park just North of Gail Borden Public Library. It is a great place to get out of the water and enjoy the library or explore the bike trail on foot.

Where to Fish Along the Fox River Bike Trails There is first-rate fishing along the Fox River, with many public spots to fish for bass, catfish and walleye. And, of course, there are plenty of tackle shops to hook you up with the right gear. The Carpentersville Dam is a favorite local fishing hole. The dam has become legendary among anglers for record-breaking walleye and smallmouth bass. Families can also be spotted along Elgin’s Riverside Drive seven days a week laughing while casting a line or two. Visit I Fish Illinois’s website for information about licensing, camping, lake details and fishing reports.

Located alongside the river in Carpentersville, Fox River Shores is home to some unusually steep, swampy habitats with rare plants like Vanilla Grass. In spring, the hills surrounding the Fox River blossom with crabapples and plums. Bring your boat to take advantage of the launch or binoculars for an inspection of this natural gem and its inhabitants. Doug Tallamy’s Wild Ones Video Presentation Wild Ones of Northern Kane County presents Dr. Doug Tallamy’s video about how we can start in our own yards to rebuild wildlife habitat and transform the world. Please register for link to Zoom. Wild Ones of Northern Kane County presents Dr. Doug Tallamy, who will be speaking about why we need to start in our own yards to rebuild wildlife habitat. Drawing on his rich background as a teacher, researcher, thinker and writer, he uses slides and stories to make the case for reconnecting with nature. His new book, Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard, elaborates his idea of creating a Homegrown National Park on our private properties. He envisions connecting fragmented habitats into corridors that allow wildlife to move from place to place as conditions change. Happily, converting our lawns into food for the insects that support a complex food web, requires no change to government or infrastructure. As E.O Wilson writes, Tallamy is one of the most original and persuasive present-day authors on conservation. He is also one of the most inspiring and knowledgeable presenters, a speaker who stimulates us to think and to act. “Identity theft has become a serious problem causing Morton County residents a lot of frustration,” said Vital Records spokesperson Paulette Grosvenor. “This new initiative aims to eliminate any and all fraud related to the use of birth certificates as a form of identification.” An Illinois bipartisan task force was appointed in 2019 to explore the possibilities of incorporating newborn baby photographs into birth records to further strengthen the authenticity of the vital records. They selected downstate Morton County for a pilot project to validate their recommendations. “As one of Illinois’ lesser populated counties, we asked to be part of this project because we have only two hospitals,” said Grosvenor, “yet we have one of the most diverse demographics of any county in Illinois because of Morton University.” The plan, which requires that a digital photo be captured by certified hospital personnel within 24 hours of the time and date of delivery, is considered a low cost solution to birth certificate fraud, since it can be achieved with two cameras costing less than $1000 each, operated by existing staff with additional twoday paid professional training and certification in baby photography. Two cameras are needed for failover redundancy in case

one loses its battery charge. Newborn baby photos will be serial numbered and encrypted before being transferred digitally to the Morton County Clerk’s office, where they will be attached to the official birth record, which remains in the County’s database indefinitely. Morton University Hospital’s Director of Neonatalogy is excited about the program, posting on Facebook, “Someday every state will have a system like ours, that records the appearance and coloration of every person, and not just their given name, biologically assigned gender, and place and date of birth.” The Photo Birth Certificate program is not yet law — it’s only an administrative policy of the County Clerk. Details of this policy are still subject to review. “So far, we have determined that blankets and knit caps will not interfere with establishing the identity of each baby,” said Grosvenor, “because they do not mask skin color or facial features which are crucial indicators of identity.” A birth certificate is considered a primary means of identification for school registration, passports, marriage licenses, social security and driver’s permits. Saint Horatio Hospital in Blenford is the other site for the program. Public Relations Director Frieda Kohn wrote in a statement, “We support this program because photobiometric identification is the gold standard in fraud prevention.”

The headline reads, “Residents Split Over Camera Plan.” She asks the day manager, “What do you think about this security camera plan?” “We have cameras here, I check ‘em all the time,” the manager answers. “I think it’s a great idea for the city as long as it doesn’t raise my taxes.” “I don’t know. I feel like it’s Big Brother watching me.” “Well, if you’re not doing anything wrong, then you’ve got nothing to hide. What’s the problem?” “I don’t like that they can see me, but I can’t see them. We should ask 3,000 more before deciding on this plan. The bond issue is a major commitment, so we have to know if the city wants it.” “Does anyone else think we should extend the poll on public security cameras for another week?”

“I do,” blurts Councilor Price-Jenkins. “We have this powerful research tool at our disposal, Apex Research, we’d be fools not to use it. We’re already paying for it.” “Gordon?”

At the next City Council meeting, the Mayor revisits the issue. “This recommendation from the Barstow Police regarding closed circuit security cameras, you all saw that public opinion was basically split on this question, correct?” “Yes, and our worst fears were just realized,” Andermayer interjects. “We spent all that money on Apex surveys and learned nothing on the first question.” “Slow down, Richard,” says Councilor Greeley. “The decision is still ours. We don’t answer to Apex Research.” Councilor Salazar speaks up. “But we basically put our faith in Apex to help us understand public opinion,” he argues. “Maybe one week was not enough to get the results we need. Maybe we can have them ask a different sample of people, or change the

Street. “Steve, the City Councilors are here to see you.” After casual greetings, they begin a discussion of the pub’s security camera system that monitors activity inside the bar, in the dining room, and on the street outside the front entrance. The Councilors explain that they are evaluating a security camera policy for the City. “To be honest, I rarely look at this,” says the General Manager. “But it’s here if I need it. It’s helped us in a couple of cases with the Barstow P.D.” Bertone opens a window on his computer monitor displaying camera playback controls and a list of video recordings from the

past 21 days. He double-clicks on the video from the night before. “With this system, I can quickly scan several hours of video by holding down the arrow key.” “Wait a minute,” says Price-Jenkins, “can you back up and show that again?” The manager rewinds to a scene from 1:15 am, when two men are seen entering the building across the street from the Pub. “There,” she says, “can you play that?” He cues the video from the point where the men enter the frame. “I think that’s Michael and Richard,” she says. “You know these two guys?” Bertone asks, as he rewinds the scene. “That’s the Mayor and Councilor Andermayer,” she says. “What are they doing down here at one in the morning?” “Let’s go over and see what’s in that building they went into,” suggests Greeley. Crossing First Street, they enter a vestibule across from the Crazy Shepherd where the two were seen entering. Among the

In the faculty lounge at Barstow East High School, a Social Science teacher unpacks a brown bag lunch, and picks up a copy of the Barstow Journal. He opens it to the editorial page where a headline reads, “Security Cameras: The Next Barstow Upgrade.” “Do you think this security camera plan is going to go forward?” he asks a Math teacher, between bites of a ham sandwich. “Definitely,” she says, “The police want it and the City Council is for it, except for Andermayer, who’s on the wrong side of every decision they make.” “Apparently the Journal is for it, but nobody’s been able to prove that the people want public surveillance cameras.” “What difference does that make? The people don’t decide, the Council does.” “Sure, but the Council spent that money on surveys because they want to protect themselves.

They want to be able to say they are accountable to public opinion.” “All they have to do is slant that survey. Problem solved.” A telephone rings in a bungalow, where a woman is at work in a spare bedroom entering medical records transcriptions into a secure website. The caller ID says “BARSTOW SCHOOLS.” She picks up the receiver. “Hello?” “Hello,” says a synthetic voice. “This is a student wellness alert from Barstow East High School. The school ID belonging to your student in grade ten spent sixteen minutes and nine seconds in the second floor boys’ rest room during sixth period. Please speak to your student and check carefully for signs of physical or emotional distress. If you have any concerns, call a physician or the School Nurse’s Office.” The woman hangs up the phone and enters a text message to her son. “Are you sick?” After 22 minutes, the boy replies, “No why would you ask me that”

The Next Chapter

by Jeffrey R. Pierce BRAVO 6.6 was our 60th issue, marking five successful years of publishing. What started out to be primarily an events calendar has evolved into a magazine with original feature articles, interviews, creative writing, visual art, satire, festival programs and more.

150,000 residents, a magazine like BRAVO should have more than 6,000 readers per month; there’s probably enough subject matter around us to fill three magazines; and it’s time to refresh the graphic design that looks like it was done by a middle-aged white guy.

We have met dozens of fascinating people and given many artists their first interview, and many writers their first chance to be published. It has been a rewarding journey.

For these reasons, we are looking for someone to write “the next chapter” for BRAVO. The job requires skills in print production, knowledge of basic business procedures, and talents for writing, design, and photography. So far it has worked well for one person to handle everything, but it is a demanding hobby even for someone with patience and passion.

But it has been a labor of love for almost everyone involved. BRAVO has been successful because of volunteer effort. Every piece of cover art was lent or donated by an artist; every article was contributed by someone who loved to write; and most of the events in our lengthy and detailed calendar were keystroked into Facebook or a website by someone else. Apart from the startup costs and a few small bailouts along the way, BRAVO has been paid for by the advertisers who had confidence in our audacious project to create a sense of place for the Elgin area with a print-only publication you could only find in a cafe, library, art gallery or store. A lot has been accomplished, and there is still so much potential. For an area with about

Our Founder, Editor and Publisher Jeffrey R. Pierce will stay on through the end of 2020, and would like to turn over the BRAVO legacy to new ownership in early 2021. A lot could happen between now and then, and we hope it does. We hope the right person or small team will pick up where we left off, and build something great on the humble platform we established. If you or someone you know is interested in exploring this unique opportunity, write to us at bravo@marqueemedia.net. As always, thanks for reading! —JP

Shared Values: Jail Birds

The Leopold Birds words and pictures by Sharry Blazier Almost a century later, it is still discussed in criminology and law classrooms. In the former, it is considered a compelling study in “thrillkills,” sociopathy, and an alpha/ beta codependent relationship turned into a cold-blooded murder partnership. In the latter, it is held up as one of the greatest American courtroom moments ever, as legendary lawyer Clarence Darrow gave an impassioned closing argument that managed to sway the judge from imposing the death penalty on his two young clients.

It is the Leopold and Loeb case. In 1924 in Chicago, Nathan Leopold (the loner who collected bird taxidermy) and his pal Richard Loeb (the gregarious party boy) seemed to have it made. They came from well-todo families, were showered with the finer things in life, and both were extremely bright young men in their late teens. But in a time when society was not open to such things, Leopold became romantically fixated on Loeb and would do anything to be with him. Anything. Their crimes together began with petty thefts and arsons, and soon led to the kidnapping and horrific murder of 14-year-old Bobby Franks, just to see if they would get away with it. They didn’t, obviously. Leopold lost his eyeglasses at the site where Franks’ body was dumped; the distinctive and expensive hinges on the gold frames led police to him. When Darrow took the case, it looked like a slam dunk for the prosecution to secure death sentences for both killers. After all, once taken into custody, they had been gloatingly happy to con-

fess and provide gory details of the crime. And Leopold showed his sociopathic lack of empathy when asked how he could justify young Bobby Franks’ undeserved and horrible end: “It is as easy to justify such a death as it is to justify an entomologist impaling a beetle on a pin.” Still, Darrow managed to save Leopold and Loeb from the Cook County Jail’s gallows, in favor of life sentences. This left Leopold, so heartless toward a fellow human, with an odd concern: What to do with his extensive and cherished bird taxidermy collection? Who would take care of it properly? It’s said that Leopold considered the obvious choice of the Field Museum in Chicago, but feared his birds would only end up in long-term storage there. On the other hand, that Audubon Museum -- now known as Elgin Public Museum of Natural History & Anthropology, in Lords Park -- out to the west of the city would provide a much greater likelihood of them being publicly shown. The bulk of the Leopold Birds collection would thus come to Elgin. There was considerable public outcry, as some felt that the Elgin Audubon Museum accepting the birds would be glorifying and monetizing Leopold and his heinous crime. Less remembered is that victim Bobby Franks had an Elgin family connection. His aunt, though deceased by the time of his killing, was Rebecca Franks Eppenstein, wife of Illinois Watch Case Co. president Sol Eppenstein. The Eppensteins had been longtime Elgin residents, residing on Douglas Avenue, not very far from the main IWC factory at Dundee and Slade Avenues.

The Elgin museum’s curator, Charles Adkins, hated to lose out on such a fine collection, so he struck a compromise: He would remove all specimen donor names from the museum’s records. Nobody would ever be able to say for sure which had belonged to the notorious killer.

While he awaited a job opening somewhere, there were whispers around Elgin that Leopold was seen meekly mowing the lawns of Church of the Brethren members -- and yes, visiting his birds at the Audubon museum.

Loeb – generally regarded as the actual killer of Bobby Franks – was himself murdered in prison in 1936. But in 1958, middle-aged Nathan Leopold was paroled. He had been a model prisoner, spending his 33 years behind bars teaching, developing a prison library, and offering himself up for a new anti-malarial trial

To get him far from the press and the public eye, the job the Brethren found

drug needed for GIs in the WWII era. Always a brilliant student, he had remained deep in academic studies, including ornithology. The Church of the Brethren, world-headquartered in Elgin, took him under their wing (so to speak), promising to find him productive work. They wanted to show the world that nobody, not even one of the most infamous killers of the century, was beyond redemption. Indeed, it seems Leopold had no further inclination toward homicide. He kept a low profile upon release, imploring the press not to pursue him.

for Leopold was as an x-ray technician in their mission hospital in Puerto Rico, and he soon enough moved there. But few are aware that he made several more visits to Elgin to speak at annual church conferences, thanking them for his second chance in life. His last-verified visit to the museum was in 1967, noted by (presumably) then-Curator Gusler on a small piece of cardboard that by now has disappeared. There is one person in Elgin, now 90, who remembers very well spending time with Nathan Leopold during his visits to town; for the sake of his privacy, he will herein be called Kenneth Parker. True to form, Kenneth Parker reports, Leopold would quietly slip into town, staying at the homes of Rev. Harold and Leona Row (rhymes with cow) on the 00-100 block of Monroe St., and later the

300 block of Hubbard Av., both on the city’s west side. Harold and Kenneth were executives at the Brethren offices on Rt. 25/Dundee Av; some will recall Leona as the principal of Garfield Elementary School. Harold had been highly instrumental in securing Leopold’s parole. Attending a church conference together in Wichita one year, Parker asked to interview Leopold, recording the session on audio tape. He gave Leopold his solemn word that it would be only for private listening among church officials, but somebody leaked the tape to a reporter, and next thing Parker knew, Interview with Killer was headline news in a Kansas newspaper – and Nathan Leopold was feeling very betrayed! It took Harold Row’s assurances to Leopold that Parker had not been the guilty party, and he and Parker again became friendly. Parker can’t recall much of the interview’s content after more than half a century, but hopes that tape may still exist somewhere in the Brethren archives. When Row died in July of 1971, Leopold eulogized him in The Messenger, a Brethren publication, referring to him as, “St. Harold” for his unwavering friendship and assistance. “To attempt to describe Harold Row,” Leopold wrote with a somewhat odd choice of wording, “I have to do violence to the English language. I have to coin a new superlative for the adjective good. For Harold was the goodest man I ever knew.”

exhibit is a Great Horned Owl, with a fierce predatory expression that seems a little too apropos. We know it is a Leopold Bird because its distinctive pose can be seen among those in a newspaper photograph from 1924, accompanying an article describing Leopold’s dilemma of what to do with his prized collection as he prepared to serve a life sentence.

A month later, Leopold died of a heart attack in Puerto Rico. He had lived quietly and uneventfully as promised, doing his hospital job, authoring a book and academic papers about birds, and even marrying. His widow Trudi continued to visit Elgin for some years after his death. The Leopold & Loeb case had an inevitable impact on pop culture. It inspired the Alfred Hitchcock movie Rope, and there was also a connection to Hitchcock’s Psycho. Though its author Robert Bloch had mostly based his murderous character on serial killer Ed Gein, he gave Norman Bates a creepily familiar hobby: bird taxidermy. As to how many Leopold Birds Elgin Public Museum still has after so many years, we naturally cannot say. Surely quite a few of his feathered friends have been de-accessioned and discarded due to deterioration. One we know still exists and is currently on

Asked in 2020 if anything of Leopold’s behavior indicated he was capable of participating in such a brutal murder as Bobby Franks’, Kenneth Parker remembered him as, “cool,” in the cautiously aloof sense, but, “He seemed to manage relationships and address the public well. His intellect and gentle nature overshadowed anything like that.” Of course … that’s exactly what a cold-blooded sociopathic killer wants you to think. Sharry Blazier is the Education Coordinator of Elgin Public Museum of Natural History & Anthropology in Lords Park. Contact her at blazier_s@cityofelgin.org. “The Leopold Birds” is a chapter from the forthcoming book, Elgin’s White Elephant: 100 Years of Elgin Public Museum, available later this year as a centennial fundraiser for the museum.
