Most of us understand the importance of the natural world and want to contribute to its survival. There are actions we take as individuals, like opting out of using straws or bringing a reusable bag to the grocery store, but a lot of people draw a blank when wanting to do more. Collective participation is essential for wider success. Elgin has many groups working hard to preserve the essential green spaces we all rely on. These groups are combining peoples’ voices, abilities, and talents to reduce pollution, conserve nature, and push for efficient use of resources. As the Nature Program Coordinator at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, I get to collaborate with many of these groups and see the amazing work being done to keep Elgin beautiful. In this article, I have compiled a list of some groups that are working toward that goal. Supporting these groups can be as easy as attending a meeting,

signing a petition, donating needed items, or learning a new way to do a routine activity. This is by no means an exhaustive list of community environmental groups. Incredible work is being done every day and there are a variety of opportunities to get involved.

Elgin Green Groups 350 Climate Change Beginning as an environmental event calendar, EGG350 now identifies as a local climate change group and a part of the international group, 350.org. They seek to share and support individual green efforts to reduce greenhouse gases through programs on climate change, energy efficiency, solar energy, recycling, and regenerative agriculture. This also includes participating in climate change rallies and community green events. “Go green, greener, greenest!” is

Behind the Scenes by Explore Elgin Area

The Elgin Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (EACVB) is classically known as the organization that promotes the Elgin Area to visitors. We are responsible for promoting the sporting fields, wedding venues and the numerous leisure attractions that entertain visitors during their visits.

paid marketing efforts in the beginning of the pandemic, we have been working behind the scenes to adjust those campaigns so they can be part of the economic solution. It has always been the responsibility of a CVB to tell a destination’s story and this time of recovery will not be any different.

Our work starts with cold calls and building relationships to get these groups interested in our area. We help them plan their whole trip or event from recommending catering companies for a wedding reception, to restaurants that can accommodate the large groups that come with teams filling the Elgin Sports Complex, to negotiating a special rate for the teams to visit an attraction during tournaments.

Campaigns we planned to run this spring and into summer include the following. • “Unique Architecture Worth A Road Trip” • “Wedding Venues To Inspire Your Big Day” • “A Trip Down the Fox River Trails (Water and Bike)”

During COVID-19, the EACVB switched those efforts to supporting our local restaurants with campaigns highlighting their takeout options and wrote blogs to reintroduce the residents throughout the Elgin area to why they should be proud of their community.

• “Space Unique Enough For Your Meeting”

The Fox River Trail, access to the river for water sports, abundance of parks still open for exercise and the public art that can be enjoyed while maintaining social distancing are still draws for residents.

• “10 Reasons To Move to Elgin”

While all of our community partners are working to create activities for families to do from home, we worked to put all of those experiency as a whole. es into one p place and sell the community We know that this time in our life where sheltering in place is the norm will travel will return. Chamber Music Mini-Concerts With social distancing and shelter-in-place orders in place, music lovers are left with no live performances to attend and musicians have been cut off, not only from their ability to share their passion and their music, but also a substantial amount of their income. That’s why Chamber Music on the Fox has introduced online mini-concerts: a series of very short (5-15 minute) performances that are live-streamed from each musician’s home and that benefit the artists directly. Here’s how it works: 1. At the time of each concert go to fb.com/ChamberMusicOnTheFox 2. Scroll down to find the LIVE video. Click the play button. 3. Please DONATE whatever amount you can. Chamber Music on the Fox will be passing on 100% of donations to the performers, and your donation will be tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Upcoming Performances: • Mike Brozick, Trumpet. May 30th, 7pm • Kate Carter & Rodolfo Vieira, Violins. June 6th, 7pm

Live at the Blue Box That’s right. Live at the Blue Box is back for one night only (at least for now). Watch the live podcast that started it all from the comfort of your own home featuring the original line up of hosts. This week’s theme: Pandemic At The Disco!

Rather than get all heavy and depressing about the coronavirus, they are going to have some fun talking about all things nerdy and geeky involving pandemics. The line up includes: Reel Idiots, Binge Worthy, Pop Culture Countdown, and more! There may even be some interactive game show segments and other surprises. Whew, that’s a lot to fit into 2 hours.

Welcome Back! As our world starts to open up again, or as it has been said, “It’s safe to go back in the water, we’re all going to see a new reality unlike preCOVID-19. None of us will be the same, perhaps that’s a good thing. Whether we are getting through this with heartache, backache, or financial challenges, we will all adapt to a new, better and safer way of doing things. The Real estate profession has implemented numerous new protocols, rules, and procedures when it comes to marketing, showing, and the buying process. They go far beyond virtual showings, hand sanitizers, masks and not touching anything during a showing. The pause in the day-to-day caused many of us to take time out to refine how we do things. If you’re thinking of selling now or in the near future and wondering just how this new reality will affect the value and the marketing process of your home, call me and we’ll have a confidential discussion of all of the options that are available to you. Stories Behind the Music Join Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra (EYSO) for a storytelling journey where you will experience personal stories from staff, students, alumni, board members, and others with a personal connection to EYSO. Finding ways to connect — when we are required to remain separate — is challenging. Since 1976, EYSO has been a place of connection and belonging for hundreds of young people. EYSO families value the sense of community that is such an important part of EYSO, making coming together and forging ahead even more important. In March, EYSO suspended in-person rehearsals, then pivoted to distance learning via Zoomhearsals (you’ll learn more about these in our stories) without missing a single Sunday afternoon of scheduled activity. Last month, they moved their May 10th season

6.6

finale concert to an online format. Conductors, coaches and students have worked enthusiastically and passionately toward this reimagined virtual performance. EYSO is known for great concerts -- the culmination of weeks of engaging, dynamic, and thought-proving collaboration in the rehearsal room. While Zoomhearsals and virtual concerts don’t replace time together in the rehearsal room and on stage, these efforts offer a glimpse into the “EYSO difference”. All music is essentially a synthesis: of sound, meaning and intention. Concert, symphony, ensemble and other music terms all contain some element of “combining” in their definition. The life of a musician is like that as well. “Where I have ended up in my profession is not what I expected, but I couldn’t really have planned it any better,” said Jeanne Anne Aukofer, Director of Music and Liturgy at Saint Thomas More Church in Elgin. “In my daily work, I am able to use my education and experience from teaching, performing and theological studies.”

ourselves, then preparation and practice is essential.”

On The Marquee

JEANNE ANNE AUKOFER

“This kind of growth was difficult, even painful, because I had very high musical expectations,” she confessed. “It was only through many hours of practice that I have been able to learn other instruments like the Irish whistle, guitar, mandolin and accordion.”

Music has been used in worship for thousands of years. Listening to a solo voice, a choir or singing together as a body can be a powerful and transformative experience for those who are open to it.

Christians are commissioned to spread the good news of salvation, and that sometimes requires gaining people’s attention. Catchy, rhythmic, modern music performed by attractive and energetic artists can do that, and it’s why many churches have a house band play on Sunday mornings.

Over the course of an hour or more, they play unique arrangements of Christmas music on over 100 different instruments. Like the others, Jeane Anne doubles (quadruples?) on strings, winds, keyboards and percussion.

It was Michael who challenged and encouraged her to grow and learn other instruments.

“There is more to music than singing or playing the right notes,” she explains. “As musicians, we have the unique ability to reach the hearts and souls of people.”

“I cannot play or sing music for worship without great emotion and a sense of gratitude,” she admits. “As much as I love music, it is not my own. It belongs to God and was given to us as a gift to lead others to Him.”

Jeanne Anne and Michael Aukofer are two of the members of the Appalachian Christmas Quartet, a group of talented instrumentalists who come together to play a series of concerts in Elgin and elsewhere each December.

“I didn’t set out to be a multiinstrumentalist,” she said. “As a young musician, my goal was to become a professional flute player, and later a professional vocalist and performer. I intensely focused and practiced these two disciplines for many years.”

Originally from the Wichita, Kansas area, she moved to Elgin with husband Michael, both of them holding advanced degrees in music. After teaching K-12 music in the area for a few years, she became a full-time church music professional, through which she brings people together with a collection of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.

Alongside the classic and contemporary repertoire, “Catholic churches have the additional use of Gregorian Chant, which dates back to the 9th and 10th century.” Incorporating the music of many centuries reminds us of our shared humanity in the eyes of an ever-present God.

13

Some traditionalists associate electric guitars and drums with pop music, and think of it as self-centered and showy. “It’s possible to love the sight and sound of talented musicians without making them the objects of worship,” Aukofer reflected. “And truly, if musicians do their job well, then there are no distractions and the congregation can fully enter into worship and prayer.” It’s not just spotlit Christian contemporary “praise teams” who risk betraying the connection that church music should provide.

“I believe any musical setting or style has the potential to become too performance-oriented,” she added. “I have attended Masses with a beautiful lyric soprano who never looked up from her music, never smiled — and I ended up feeling disconnected and less than inspired, even though the musical presentation was technically accurate.” This is where the intention comes in. “Regardless of the style of music, as long as it remains focused on God, then it has served its purpose,” she said. “And if our goal as musicians is to focus on God and not

Michael Aukofer is the Director of Music & the Center for the Arts at Westridge Community Church in Elgin. Joining together as partners in music and in life, she says “my husband helps remind me, through his own example, that the abilities and talents we have are to be constantly honed, crafted and polished. We are both very hard workers and hold high expectations for the work we do, because of the respect we have for music, our faith and the people we work with and serve.” Musical skill and faith both become stronger with practice. “In some ways, practice is very prayerful and meditative for me,” she shared. “Music is so much a part of my life that I’m not sure there’s a separation between personal and professional — it’s all become the same.” Get to know Jeanne Anne, Michael and the music of the Appalachian Christmas Quartet at acqmusic.com.

This organization aims to deliver wishes to a unique group of patients, ages 18-24, who are battling for their lives while their peers are just beginning them. Jack Eckholm was a lucky recipient of one of these wishes after he was diagnosed with cancer in 2015. Since he became involved with Nik’s Wish, Jack was inspired by the incredible work ethic and dedication of the entire staff, and he wanted to find a way to give back. Jack and his family started Get Buzzed to Fight Cancer as a way to gather loved ones and raise money for a cause that was incredibly close to Jack’s heart. After Jack’s passing in July 2019, his family wanted to continue to host the event in his memory, and as a testament to his endless dedication to making a difference to those around him. At the event, volunteers raise money and shave their heads in solidarity towards those bravely battling cancer. For those who are not ready to take the head shaving plunge, there are plenty of other ways to contribute to the cause! There will be: -Silent Auction Items; -Raffle Prizes; -5050 raffles; -Apparel for purchase. Your ticket includes: -Pizza; -Live performances by Kylie and Wild Bill & DJ Big C; -Outdoor games (weather permitting); -Dancing; -FUN! ALL PROCEEDS this year will be donated to the Nikolas Ritschel Foundation in Jack’s name. BRAVO Serial Fiction: “Your Opinion Counts”

Losing a loved one anytime is difficult, but a loss during the Covid-19 crisis is extra challenging. If you or someone you know are facing loss and need to know your options, we can help. Your options include: • A small intimate service for family, at the Funeral Home, Crematory, Church, or Cemetery. • Webcasting that service for loved ones. • A meaningful private viewing now and a public memorial later. • Delaying your service. Modern embalming and cremation both give you extra time to wait and have the type of funeral you want once the pandemic is over.

Whatever you feel is best for your family, move ahead or wait, we are here for you. Together we will get through this.

Part One:

Opting In by Mark Averill The phone rings, displaying the caller ID “APEX RSRCH.” A man answers after three rings.

The recorded voice prompts for gender, ZIP code, and income bracket. The man complies. “Thank you. The City of Barstow is considering a plan brought by the Downtown Merchants Coalition to build a public pay toilet facility on the corner of Second and James Streets. The facility would primarily serve customers of downtown businesses and the Farmers Market, and people attending outdoor concerts and seasonal festivals at McKinley Park. The cost to build and maintain the facility would be offset by a special tax assessment on property in the downtown commercial district, and from user fees. Press 1 if you support this plan; press 2 if you do not support the plan; press 3 if you are unsure or choose not answer; press 4 if you would like to hear additional background information.” Beep. “Thank you for completing our survey. “Evidently a poll found that 83% of the people don’t want it.” “Well thank goodness for that. It seems like a terrible idea to me.” “This meeting of the Barstow City Council is called to order.” The mayor raps the gavel once. “Would the Clerk please call the roll.” “Mayor Michael Sheilds.” “Here.” “Councilor Richard Andermayer.” “Here.” “Councilor Maurice Greeley.” “I’m here.” “Councilor Gordon Kromberg.” “Here.” “Councilor Tomasa Marroquin.” “I am here.” “Councilor Valencia PriceJenkins.” “Here.” “Councilor Roberto Salazar.” “Here.” After approving the minutes from the last meeting, the treasurer’s report, and three committee reports, the Council turns to its first special order of business. “We have a resolution pending, to authorize construction of a public toilet facility at Second and James, together with recommended changes to titles eight and twelve of the Barstow Mu-

nicipal Code, and the 2021 budget to be amended separately. At this point, you’re very familiar with this matter. Is there any further discussion? The Chair recognizes Mr. Greeley. “We all saw the results of that poll. The people don’t want this. Andermayer interjects, “But the people who work downtown want it. You know we need public rest rooms down there, and the pay-per-use feature is the best way to manage the facility. And pay for it. “Councilor Marroquin? “Thank you, Mayor. I will not be voting for this project, because I think the existing rest rooms at McKinley Park could be upgraded to address this need, and the proposed site would be better used for a new business. And I feel that public opinion should be considered as well. “I agree with Tomi, says Price-Jenkins. “A pay toilet building would be terrible for Barstow’s public image. I realize the stores don’t like to maintain rest rooms for the public, but that’s just part of running a retail business. And they get a lot of traffic from the bandshell, and SailFest, and outdoor theatre. “Gordon? “Well ... the idea has some merit, but I don’t want to have to explain to the press why the Council approved such a wildly unpopular plan. I’m not voting for it. “To hear all of you rave about how European cities are managed, frankly I’m shocked you wouldn’t want this, Andermayer interjects. “They have pay toilets all over Europe. A few more comments are exchanged and the Mayor calls for a roll call vote on the resolution. It fails 5-1 with Andermayer the only affirmative vote. The next morning, the headline of the Barstow Journal reads, “Pay Toilet Plan Defeated. “It says, in making its decision the City Council strongly considered the results of a recent poll by Apex Research that showed 83% disapproval of the proposed facility, a man says to a fellow commuter on the bus. “Did you get a call from Apex Research?

“No. But I hardly ever answer my land line anymore, especially not for some kind of survey. “Do you get the Journal at your house? “Yeah, but my wife is the only one who reads it. “They’ve been doing lots of these polls. Every Thursday the paper reports the latest results. Last week they asked if people were satisfied with the new digital parking meters, and it was overwhelmingly positive. “Really? That’s ridiculous. Putting in those meters was one of the most expensive boondoggles the City ever tried. Everybody I know avoids them. The man looks back at his paper. “It says if you would like to participate in future polls addressing Barstow public policy, text your home phone number to 90555. Your opinion counts. The phone rings, displaying the caller ID “APEX RSRCH. A woman answers immediately. “Hello, Barstow resident, the recorded voice says. She shouts to her husband in the next room, “Craig, it’s one of those poll calls. Beep ... beep ... beep. The woman follows the prompts for her demographic information. “Thank you. The City of Barstow is considering a plan to provide secure document, media and digital device disposal services for residents at two drop-in locations, staffed by a contracted third-party service provider. The cost of these services would be added to the 2021 municipal budget, and will amount to an average tax increase of approximately nine dollars annually per household. Elgin Firm Eyes Sales Surge During Pandemic While so many area businesses are struggling — and some failing — to survive the economic slump brought on by the spread of COVID-19, one new startup appears to have timed their launch perfectly. SmarteAire, LLC began serving its first customers in March, just before stay-at-home orders were put in place. First considered a niche concept business, their product has suddenly gained a huge market of prospective customers. “SmarteAire provides canisters of compressed fresh, clean, outdoor air to customers in their homes with a touch-free drone delivery,” said Carter Fleming, the entrepreneur behind the idea. “We originally designed this product to serve video gaming professionals and enthusiasts who can’t be away from their consoles long enough to ventilate their homes or go outside to breathe,” he said. “We consider it a lifestyle enhancement, but in many ways it’s also a health necessity.” The flat-bottomed canisters stand upgright on the floor in any room, and release odor-free, oxygen-balanced outdoor air with the turn of a valve. One canister can freshen the air in a typical 9x12 foot room for a week, providing a quantity of oxygen comparable to two or three snake plants or Chinese evergreens.

“Poor indoor air quality is a problem all over the world,” said Fleming. “SmarteAire is solving that problem in a way that’s convenient, effective, maintenance-free and not toxic to pets or children like so many of the house plants that have been used for this purpose.” The air that’s packaged by SmarteAire is collected from a residential backyard in a subdivision off Nesler Road in Elgin.

The prevailing westerly breezes carry in air from the undeveloped areas west of the city that is rich in oxygen and low in fossil fuel emissions. “Our standard process is to purify the air through 0.3 micron HEPA filters, irradiate it with ultraviolet light and pass it through activated carbon and electrostatic plates,” he told Faque News. “But once the coronavirus reached our area, we started bubbling it through quinine water to be absolutely sure it was virus-free.” Since each canister of SmarteAire weighs 12 pounds when full, it must be carried by a four-rotor drone powered by a compact gasoline engine. The drones are scrambled from SmarteAire’s lab near Longcommon Parkway and piloted individually by remote control using cellular voice and data technology. By following the personalized instructions from the drone pilot over speakerphone, subscription customers attach their 11.9 pound empty canisters to the delivery drone to return them to SmartAire. Since the transaction is completely digital, there is no waste or packaging to dispose of. Fleming declined to comment on the price of his SmarteAire service, explaining that it varies according to distance, frequency, air availability and the cost of fuel. But he boasts that the company has delivered a total of more than seven pounds of air to gamers and other self-isolating residents in the area, in just the first sixty days. “Once people experience the fresh air of a warm Spring day in the privacy and comfort of their own basement,” says Fleming, “they will think of social distancing in a completely new way. We like to say that SmarteAire is literally the future of breathing.”

The Inner Craft

Part Two in a Series on Ritual for Artists

Rituals for Creativity by Michael J. Murschel, SD Last month, I wrote about the difference between habit and ritual. “A habit is doing something in a repeated way, with the main objective of doing the action itself. You always put on your shoes in the same order. Your morning and evening routines are always the same. You do these things unconsciously, on automatic pilot.” That gives structure to your world, continuity, and predictability: Certain things happen in certain ways at certain times. “A ritual is doing something in a repeated way, its focus on something outside the actions themselves. Ritual influences outcomes. You pray with your words ordered in a specific way. You light candles at certain times of the day, night, year.” And while it is all well and good that a habit becomes a routine, i.e. that thing that happens at this or that time of the day, rituals might ought not to become routine, at least in the sense that they become mindless repetition, because they lose their meaning and ultimately their life-changing impact. As creatives, we are faced with the very real possibility of developing rituals for ourselves to increase our productivity, only to discover that the ritual has become so routine that it is now a habit. Mark Twain’s daily ritual included going into his study after breakfast and staying there till late afternoon. After evening dinner, he would read his day’s writing to his family. Routine, but also ritual through which he focused his creative energy. While visiting Paris, Twain and his

daughters had a ritual of them pointing at a random picture, and he, in response, creating a story around that image. Eduardo Sarmiento, Creative Director with the creative strategic development firm, Brunet|Garcia, explains that his ritual of sharpening pencils with a knife engages his creativity in a moment of clarity and deep introspection, allowing his contemplation to settle in on his creative process. How you develop your own ritual should be a creative exercise in and of itself. First, determine why you need a ritual to lead you into your creativity. To set off sacred time and space for creative work? To clear your mind? Focus? Empower you? Calm you? Are you a physical or a spiritual ritualist? Do you need to physically light candles, burn incense, ring bells? Sit in a certain place, a certain way, at a certain time? Or will you mediate? Pray? Contemplate? Enter the silence in hopes of encountering … only you can answer that, and even if you know what you want to encounter, what you may actually encounter might truly surprise you. (Hint: It helps to have a guide, at least in the beginning.) Or will you combine the two, letting physical action propel you into deeper communion with your creative wellspring?

My ritual, at least in the beginning, was based on something I read in Writer’s Digest decades ago, while still in high school. It said that every day you should sit in front of your typewriter (remember those things?) for a couple of hours. You did not have to write. But, you couldn’t do anything else. Today, nearly 3,000 published feature articles, 42 produced scripts, three books published under my own name and five books ghost-written for others, as well as hundreds of funeral eulogies, service designs, and commemorations later, that ritual still works for me. Renowned author and comparative mythologist, Joseph Campbell, wrote, “ … By participating in a ritual … Your consciousness is being re-minded of the wisdom of your own life. I think ritual is terribly important.” So do I. And you?

BRAVO 6.6 was our 60th issue, marking five successful years of publishing. What started out to be primarily an events calendar has evolved into a magazine with original feature articles, interviews, creative writing, visual art, satire, festival programs and more.

150,000 residents, a magazine like BRAVO should have more than 6,000 readers per month; there’s probably enough subject matter around us to fill three magazines; and it’s time to refresh the graphic design that looks like it was done by a middle-aged white guy.

We have met dozens of fascinating people and given many artists their first interview, and many writers their first chance to o be published. It has been a rewarding ding journey.

For these reasons, we are looking for someone to write “the next chapter” for BRAVO. The job requires skill skills in print production, knowledge of basic business procedures, and talents f writing, for d design, and p photograph So far it phy. has ha worked we for one well person to per han handle everything, thin but it is de a demanding hobb even for hobby some someone with patie patience and passion. passi

But it has been een a labor of love for almost everyone involved. ed. BRAVO has been successful because of volunteer effort. Every piece of cover art was lent or donated by an artist; every article was contributed ed by d tto write; it and d someone who lloved most of the events in our lengthy and detailed calendar were keystroked into Facebook or a website by someone else. Apart from the startup costs and a few small bailouts along the way, BRAVO has been paid for by the advertisers who had confidence in our audacious project to create a sense of place for the Elgin area with a print-only publication you could only find in a cafe, library, art gallery or store. A lot has been accomplished, and there is still so much potential. For an area with about

O Founder, Our Editor and Publisher Jeffrey R. Pierce will stay on through the end of 2020, and would like to turn over the BRAVO legacy to new ownership in early 2021. A lot could happen between now and then, and we hope it does. We hope the right person or small team will pick up where we left off, and build something great on the humble platform we established. by Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra The Illinois Council of Orchestras has named Anthony Riani as Volunteer of the Year for his service to the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra during the 2018-19 season, largely focused on his video recording and editing contributions. EYSO staff say Riani’s efforts go above and beyond volunteerism to the point that he has become an invaluable member of the EYSO team, and his dedication to and understanding of EYSO’s core values and mission are reflected in his work and attitude. Riani’s most recent contribution helped EYSO conclude its 2019-20 season with Folklórico, a virtual concert featuring all EYSO ensembles, including its three full orchestras, two string orchestras, Brass Choir, and EYSO Samba Band and preconcert performances by EYSO Honors Chamber Ensembles. The recording of the concert is available at www.eyso.org/concert.

“The EYSO spirit of innovation, curiosity, and enthusiasm burns brightly as students, families, staff, and volunteers came together to create something truly spectacular, said Artistic Director Matthew Sheppard, “a digital concert cycle and final performance, with all the hallmarks of expert noticing we’ve come to appreciate in EYSO. “ Riani lives in Geneva and is father of two EYSO players. Anaka played trumpet in Sinfonia, Philharmonia, and Youth Symphony, and was a member of the Sterling Brass Quintet 201617. Rebecca is now in her seventh season with EYSO, playing violin. Riani spent most of his career in the print industry, but has loved music since his own school days. He started the trombone in fifth grade (although his first choice would have been trumpet) and played in band, marching band, solo ensemble, and musical pit orchestras.

Welcome to The Greens of Elgin The Greens of Elgin is located in Elgin, Illinois. The complex is located in a beautiful, natural setting minutes from shopping, dining, and entertainment. It is a 3-story, 90-unit, elevator building with a 55+ age restriction and a Condominium Association.

After high school, he continued to play in the Addison Community Band. It was during Anaka’s second EYSO season that Anthony decided rather than just dropping off his girls at rehearsal, he would stay and watch. More and more fascinated with the EYSO approach — encouraging curiosity, imagination, critical thinking and collaboration (which he admits was different than his own musical experience as a kid) — he had an idea. Why not use his skills as a videographer to provide the conductors with a weekly video of their rehearsal, to review and use to plan the following week? EYSO now retains a library of thousands of hours of high-quality videography, a priceless resource for a performance arts and educational organization like EYSO. Riani manages every aspect of recording and editing every rehearsal and concert throughout the entire season and has been doing so efficiently and reliably for five years. “We all appreciate his dependability, flexibility, and generosity of time,” said Sheppard, “but most of all we value his enthusiasm and ever-cheerful ‘Yes, we can!’ attitude.” Riani’s passion for the organization shines through not only in the amount of time he dedicates to EYSO, but also in his ability to recall precise moments. He genuinely cares about what students are doing to be fully present and immersed in their work. While

managing the technical aspect of videography, he is also taking note, both physical and mental, during recordings. When asked if he remembers a certain moment, he is almost always able to quickly recall and locate video of what is been requested. In addition to recording all the rehearsals and concerts, Riani often comes with up with original ideas to broaden EYSO’s exposure. During the 2018-19 season, he helped students with their NOTES campaign. NOTES is an annual student led fundraising campaign that engages students in philanthropy by sharing their EYSO story. Historically, students shared their EYSO stories by writing letters (and eventually emails) to their friends, family, and commu-

The mission of EYSO is to create a community of young musicians, enriching their lives and the lives of their families, schools, communities and beyond, through the study and performance of excellent music. EYSO serves nearly 400 students from 70 Chicagoland communities and has a national reputation for providing students with an engaging musical experience and a comprehensive learning environment of curiosity, imagination, critical thinking, and collaboration. Students explore a thematic curriculum each season — one which helps students develop artistically and technically, and prepares them for a future of complex ideas, creative risk-taking, and leadership as global citizen. This approach has led hundreds of alumni to successful careers as professional musicians, educators, and strong leaders in every field. The 2019-20 season theme was MOVE. It explored the rich traditions of Dalcroze, ballet, and folk dance including collaborations with Joffrey Ballet artist Luis Vazquez.
