Community Harvest Educational Foundation (CHEF) is an up-and-coming non-profit organization headquartered in Elgin. CHEF’s mission is to promote better health through better eating. By offering science-based information that gleaned from experts, they allow listeners to make their own choices in collaboration with their health-care professionals. CHEF programs are free and open to the public subject to registration and occasional venue space limitations.

A Smorgas Board CHEF’s early days were spent building a high-quality leadership team; the first and current board president is well-known

Scottie Bloomer is a faith-centered singer, songwriter and recording artist on Elgin’s east side, with extensive experience in photography, sound and video production. Originally a self-taught guitarist and music teacher, he trained as a piano technician and launched a family of businesses that serve other artists, including Ninja Music Academy and Doppler Pitch. He began writing original music and has served in area music ministries for several years, appearing in variety of formats including with his band, IAMbassadors. You may recognize him from appearances at Love Elgin Day, Street Reach Ministries, and the Summer Back-toSchool Barbecue in Wing Park. His bilingual music recording projects include collaborations with the Jochy D band, and studios in Elgin and the Dominican Republic. Scottie was the subject of an article entitled “East Side Story” published in BRAVO 4.10 (October 2018). His technical production services are branded as Salt Light City, and can be discovered on Facebook. Shirley Sadjadi-Sotomayor.

local attorney, Shirley Sadjadi-Sotomayor. Shirley, an avid foodie, admitted that she didn’t realize how much she did not know about healthy food until she became immersed in CHEF. The rest of the board is comprised of exceptionally experienced health and nutrition experts, exercise enthusiasts, farming professionals, and concerned citizens. Dr. Aswani Garg has been part of the CHEF Team since its inception. He is a family physician and board certified in a forward thinking medical discipline called Lifestyle Medicine. As a board member and senior advisor, he has guided CHEF with his expertise on several projects and introduced CHEF to other like-minded doctors who are now part of the CHEF Board of Directors: Dr. Silvia AbleCaines, DVM, PhD, and Terri Dallas-Prunskis, M.D. Dr. Garg said, “It is an honor and a pleasure for me to be a part of CHEF and to support their mission of ‘promoting better health through better eating,’ which should be every physician’s mission. I am happy to share what I know about medicine so together; we can help educate other health professionals and to help the underserved of this community to learn how to takes steps against the growing burden of diseases and the astronomical costs of medications. CHEF can help people in these communities to improve their health and keep more of their money in their pockets.” Julie Dahlberg, a Registered Dietitian and Certified Public Accountant, often jokes that “I work as a CPA, so I can support my food habit.” Julie has been an integral part of the CHEF

board of directors since April 2017.

The Planting Stage Planning and forging partnerships with like-minded organizations, CHEF launched its first large-scale public event during last year’s March Into Health initiative, organized by Activate Elgin. CHEF successfully applied for a grant from A Well-Fed World, a hunger relief and environmental advocacy organization promoting the benefits of plantbased food and farming. (https:// awellfedworld.org) CHEF spent nearly a year organizing this multi-partner event entitled “Rx Nutrition: Thy Food Shall Be Thy Medicine.” The quote originates from Hippocrates, the father of medicine, who knew as far back as 460 BCE that good food makes a big difference in maintaining one’s health. The free half-day event was held in Spartan Terrace at Elgin Community College (ECC), with over 100 people in attendance. The three-part program was delivered by nationally recognized experts. Each presenter discussed how good food can actually reduce, prevent and even reverse in some cases many of the top-killing chronic diseases today, such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. They shared science-backed evidence that the Standard American Diet (SAD) is killing us.

Throughout the year, CHEF hosts a number of programs designed to build community around topics related to healthy eating. Since last August, CHEF has hosted a free group called CHEFTalks, held the 2nd Monday of each month at the Zion Lutheran Church at 330 Griswold Street in Elgin, organized by Registered Dietitian Julie Dahlberg. CHEFTalks include a potluck dinner with a focus on unprocessed, whole foods, and good company. For details: go to https://www.facebook.com/ groups/721070084998537 At the January CHEFTalks, Julie Dahlberg discussed the Blue Zones, popularized by articles written by Dan Buettner in the National Geographic. Blue Zones are those regions around the world where people often live to be centenarians with little or no diseases or mental decline. The topic was so exhilarating that the group decided to continue the discussion into the February meeting — and figure out how CHEFTalks can bring some of those techniques of long and healthy living to Elgin. This year CHEF is sponsoring The National Vegetarian Museum’s Traveling and Interactive Exhibit, co-sponsored by the Elgin Sustainability Commission and the Gail Borden Public Library, for the entire month of March. There will be a free grand opening event, “March Into Health with Plant-Based Nutrition” presented by Ashwani Garg, MD, and Food Interventionist and founder of Plantspiration, Stephanie Ignoffo, a certified Food For Life Instructor. She will delight you with her food demonstration and samples on Sunday, March 8th from 2 to 4 p.m. (https://vegmuse.org/ events/march-into-health)

The Senior Menu With a lot of expert advice and a grant from Elgin Township, CHEF has launched a yearlong program for seniors called “Rx for Healthy Seniors: Nutrition.” The first two Lunch and Learn events were well-attended and very popular. The 2.5 to 3-hour programs offer scientific proof that at any age, good food can help reduce and perhaps even reverse many of the conditions related to chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes and even heart disease.

Major Food Groups CHEF is a member of the Elgin Cooperative Ministry (ECM) that helps provide hot meals for the homeless and food insecure members of our community.

The crux of the message is that by including healthy eating, a little bit of mild exercise and strong social connections in daily living, seniors can improve the quality of their lives and reduce some of the issues that cause them to enter into nursing facilities, making it possible to stay in their own homes and close to family. More of these programs are in the works and announcements will be made when details are available. CHEF is currently working to

add a cooking class for seniors to their summer programming, and is always looking for accessible public spaces with kitchens to offer these programs. Dr. Ashwani Garg provided the guidance and technical support that made it possible for CHEF to secure the Elgin Township Grant to help seniors.

The organization is also a member of the Kane County Health Department’s Chronic Disease Action Team. Together, they organized the 3rd Annual Hunger Summit where it was learned, sadly, that the incidence of obesity in Kane County is on the rise among children. Programs to encourage kids to drink less soda (preferably NO soda) and eat fewer processed fast foods are beginning to show early positive signs, but it is not easy to break the cheap fast food trap.

6.2

CHEF remains open to collaborating with organizations — public, private and non-profit — along with individuals, to further their mission of promoting better health through better eating in our community. They intend to encourage community members to take their health into their own hands and to learn for themselves what must be done to become and stay healthy; what more fundamental way than to simply eat right. There is a lot of work left to be done; CHEF will continue to raise awareness and assist the community in taking their

health and well-being into their own hands. Jo Ann Armenta, founder of CHEF and Executive Director is an active community volunteer. She was appointed to two terms on the Elgin Human Relations Commission and was a director on several non-profit boards. Elected to the Gail Borden Public Library Board of Trustees, she is past president of the GBPL Foundation. Armenta is a retired Illinois State Police Officer and a 40-year resident of Elgin.

Mariachi Acero takes pride in learning the most recent contemporary Mariachi “Exitos” of today, while preserving the classic “Canciones” of yesterday. Guest conductor Arturo Rodríguez will present his own Mosaico Mexicano (1999), as well as Huapango (1941) by Mexican composer José Pablo Moncayo. Enjoy a pre-concert lobby performance by Mariachi Joya Dorada de U-46, and dancing during intermission by Ballet Folklorico Girasol. Da, Komrade! What happens when an unlucky nobody is mistaken for a powerful Russian government official by a group of corrupt small

town officials? Find out when Independent Players presents Nikolai Gogol’s The Government Inspector Fridays and Saturdays, March 6-7, 13-14, 20-21, 2020 at the Elgin Art Showcase, 164 Division Street, Elgin. Curtain time is 7:30 PM. Originally published in 1836, The Government Inspector was based upon an anecdote allegedly recounted to Gogol by Alexander Pushkin. Gogol attempted to write a satirical play about imperial bureaucracy in 1832, but abandoned it for fear of censorship. He then wrote to Pushkin seeking inspiration for a new satirical play in the form of “an authentically Russian anecdote.” Pushkin had a storied background and was once mistaken for a government inspector, so he wrote back: “Krispin arrives in the Province … he is taken for an official … The governor is an honest fool — the governor’s wife flirts with Krispin who then woos the daughter.” Thus we have the basic story elements for The Government Inspector, Gogol’s comic masterpiece. Essentially, it is a comedy of errors, satirizing human greed, stupidity, narcissism and the extensive political corruption of Imperial Russia. General admission tickets are $20, Senior Citizens and Stu-

TalentFest 2020 School District U-46’s talented high schoolers will get to showcase their skills at the tenth annual TalentFest at 7pm Tuesday, March 10, at The Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin. The TalentFest provides a vehicle for expression and performance that students don’t find readily in the traditional programs offered at school. The contest features acts from each of the five District high schools – Bartlett, Elgin, Larkin, South Elgin and Streamwood. After these semi-finalists perform, the audience will vote for their favorites. The top five acts advance to the second phase of the night where they will perform again. A panel of judges will select the first, second and thirdplace winners. Winners receive a cash prize as well as a commemorative plaque. In addition, the school whose acts receive the most total votes during intermission will be awarded the traveling TalentFest Trophy. Last year’s winners were from Larkin High School. “Each year, TalentFest provides an opportunity for the creativity of our high schoolers to be showcased on a professional stage in

The Castle Singers have been hailed as a model of musicianship since their inception in 1950. Under the direction of Dr. Nicki Bakko Toliver, this chamber ensemble continues to prepare a wide variety of repertoire from Byrd to The Beatles and beyond. Comprised of advanced vocalists who are dedicated to exploring challenging choral literature, the Castle Singers enjoy performing both on and off campus throughout the academic year. They strive to prepare quality choral literature, both old and new, with flexibility, stamina and dramatic flare.

The Castle Singers of Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa bring their national tour to Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church in Huntley, March 7th.

The Kammerstreicher is the Wartburg College chamber orchestra. Led by Dr. Jacob Tews, who also conducts the Wartburg Community Symphony Orchestra. ECC Arts Center Enjoy amazing artists in intimate theatres, delicious dinners paired with your event, easy accommodations, and free parking at the Elgin Community College Arts Center in Building H, 1700 Spartan Drive in Elgin. Here are the events planned for March 2020. Ticket information follows.

Lewis Black Comedian Lewis Black (aka the King of the Rant) brings his It Gets Better Every Day tour to Elgin! “When I say it gets better every day, you might be wondering, is he being facetious? Come to the show and find out. Or stay

home and wallow in your sadness,” says Black. The longest-running contributor to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, Black’s comedic brilliance lies in his trademark style of comedic yelling, animated finger-pointing, and in his ability to make people laugh at the absurdities of life — with topics that include current events, social media, politics, and anything else that exposes the hypocrisy and madness he sees in the world. Only the Blizzard Theatre at the ECC Arts Center could handle this much comedic ranting (with adult content and language). Black appears for one night only, Thursday, March 12th at 8pm. Tickets are $57-67 (see below).

New York’s dynamic incubator for emerging writers presents a fascinating look into creating new work! The first act will feature scenes from two new plays in development. During the second act, longtime friend of the Arts Center Chris Snock (American Place Theatre Literature to Life and Rock ‘n Roll Theatre) will premiere his latest play. Slice 1: Papa GreyBeard (working title) is inspired by writer/actor Tarantino Smith’s 16 years of portraying Mr. Claus in New York City’s most famous department store. Hop on Santa’s sleigh as Smith takes you “behind the beard” with true tales that will make you laugh, cry, and warm your heart! Slice 2: When a snarky teen posts his ambitious mom’s angry rant on YouTube, it goes viral, making their multiracial family internet famous. New York comedian Mel House channels rage into hilarity in her television pilot Hot Angry Mom. House’s digital series of the same name was a 2019 finalist for Sundance’s New Voices Lab.

Ruth Moody, a founding member of the Billboard charting The Wailin’ Jennys, is an artist of remarkable depth and grace in her own right. Moody is lauded for her ethereal vocals, impressive multi-instrumentalism, and her exceptionally well-crafted songwriting. Dala’s performances are filled with gorgeous harmonies, inventive musicality, and infectious fun! The duo’s signature lush vocals blend Amanda Walther’s ethereal soprano with Sheila Carabine’s velvety alto, resulting in a sound best described as angelic.

The Ruth Moody Band and Dala return to Elgin together on Friday, March 13th.

The 2019-2020 season, MOVE, explores the rich traditions of Dalcroze, ballet, and folk dance. Classical music and ballet are linked together by shared history and artistic concepts. This semester the students have been working with Luis Vazquez, Joffrey Ballet choreographer, to delve into this beautiful relationship. Their spring concert event entitled “En Pointe! Explore Elgin Area

Top Five Hiking Trails in the Elgin Area by Explore Elgin Area Hiking is a great way to surround yourself in nature. You can discover the beauty of the outdoors at whatever pace you’re comfortable with. With a little planning, it’s an activity that almost anyone can do. So pack up those snacks, water bottles and a little first aid kit, and get outside!

There must be at least 4 inches of snow cover to maintain the trail system, so check the Bowes Creek website for trail conditions. There will also be flags posted at the entrance to Bowes Creek Country Club; a green flag will signify the trail is good for skiing, and a red flag will indicate conditions are not favorable.

Check out these 5 easy and unique hiking trails in the Elgin area.

All patrons of the trails must sign a seasonal waiver in the pro shop before using the course. All participants must have their own equipment and children must be accompanied by an adult. Trail system maps will be available in the Pro Shop.

Burnidge Forest Preserve • Pingree Grove, IL • Easy, 1.5 miles • Dog Friendly (leashed) The West Trail Loop is probably the nicest trail found in Burnidge. The loop is easily accessed from the Central Trail Loop entrance via a short wooded path. Once on the trail, you’ll find a very good crushed limestone surface that is obviously well maintained. Be sure to bring sunglasses though, as the bright white surface is blinding on a sunny day! This trail is frequented by bicyclists from the campground along its east side. The trail is nice and wide though, so there’s enough room for everyone. Just stay aware, as riders are fairly quiet and can startle you as they pass. There’s a few benches scattered along the trail. Like many Illinois trails, much of it is exposed, and can get quite warm in the summer months, so dress accordingly and carry enough water even for this short loop.

Fox River Trail • Elgin / Carpentersville / East Dundee / South Elgin, IL • Easy, 40.2 total miles • Dog Friendly (leashed) The Fox River Bike Trails in Elgin, Illinois, offer more than 40 miles of guaranteed fun. They run beside the scenic Fox River in Northern Illinois, alongside historic railroad lines, crossing six bridges and passing through nature preserves and charming towns. The trails are the perfect outing for spirited cyclists, hikers, families and outdoor afi-

cionados. No weather is too extreme to take advantage of the paths. If your bike does not have snow tires, break out the snowshoes or cross-country skis. Find food en route at one of the many adjacent restaurants, or pack a lunch and pull over at one of the many picnic spots.

Raceway Trail • Carpentersville, IL • Easy / Intermediate, 3.4 mile loop • Dog Friendly (leashed) Previously, the Meadowdale International Raceway was used for motor racing from 1958 to 1968. There is an obvious straightaway where there were grandstands and the pits, also serious hills and two hairpin corners. The 122-acre Forest Preserve is one of the highest rated Mountain Biking locations in Illinois with dozens of technical trails surrounding and intersecting the main loop. This loop is a mostly paved trail that is used by walkers, runners, and mountain bikers.

Bowes Creek Country Club Cross Country Ski Trail • Elgin, IL • Beginner Trail & Advanced Trail • No Dogs Allowed Weather permitting, Bowes Creek will offer a venue for cross country skiing and snowshoeing throughout the Winter months.

Bowes Creek Woods Forest Preserve • Elgin, IL • Easy / Intermediate • Dog Friendly (leashed) • Horseback Riding Allowed (no equestrian parking) Located just west of Elgin, Bowes Creek Woods Forest Preserve is named for the creek that winds its way through the rolling terrain before heading to the Fox River. The preserve is part of a large tapestry of prairie, woodland and streams with a lovely walking trail that winds through the prairie and woods. Along the trail visitors will find a meandering stream and a grove of majestic old oak trees, still standing sentinel on the prairie. The preserve is located along greenway corridors that connect Meissner-Corron Forest Preserve to the south and Muirhead Springs Forest Preserve to the north. As a whole, these three preserves provide vital habitat for native species of animals and plants. It’s a wonderful place for bird watching, jogging, walking or picnicking at the shelter. Let us know about your favorite hiking trail, and share your adventure using #ExploreElgin on social media. Trail details provided by: HikingProject. com and KaneForest.com. U-46 TalentFest 2020 Celebrates 10 Years by Elgin Cultural Arts Commission In its 10th year, the upcoming TalentFest 2020 will showcase the creative genius of area high school students on Tuesday, March 10th at 7:00 pm at Elgin’s Hemmens Cultural Center Theater.

attendees will get to be a part of the event, as they will cast votes for their favorite acts. The top five talents will then grace the stage again, performing a completely new act, for three celebrity judges to vote on.

Students from Bartlett, Elgin, Larkin, South Elgin, and Streamwood high schools will provide entertainment throughout the evening to audience members in attendance. A change in tradition accompanies the event this year, as the emcee from each school’s own talent competition will handle the duties of introducing contestants and entertaining guests between acts.

First, second, and third places receive an award as determined by the judges’ votes and whichever school earns the most audience votes will have the honor of holding onto the traveling TalentFest Trophy, currently residing at last year’s People’s Choice winner, Larkin High School.

The ten finalists—the top two acts from each school—will perform during the first half of the evening. During intermission,

With the support of the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission and the U-46 Educational Foundation, TalentFest is open to the entire student population within the district. Winners from past shows are often asked to

For most of us raised in the latter half of the twentieth century, our notions and expectations of orchestral music are shaped by what we’ve heard in the media, particularly in television and movie scores, from Perry Mason to Looney Toons to Star Wars and beyond. Composing for the screen is arguably the most fertile environment for creating new orchestral music, and possibly its most powerful voice.

on the musical heritage of my country ... I was, at the time, admiring more than ever the music of the great Mexican nationalist composers,” he remembered.

On The Marquee

ARTURO RODRÍGUEZ

“As composers, we are influenced by all the sounds that surround us, especially by those sounds that surrounded us at the early stages of our lives,” said Mexican composer Arturo Rodríguez. “I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s listening to the wonderful symphonic soundtracks that were coming out at that time.”

“Recently I’ve been writing the music for the new Cartoon Network animated series Victor and Valentino, which is about two Mexican kids from the US visiting their grandmother in México and learning in each episode about Meso-American legends. I’ve been having so much fun composing the music for this series precisely because the music jumps from a traditional orchestral accompaniment to a specific music from a certain region of México or Latin America and then back to orchestral. It’s great fun as well as a challenge to incorporate different styles and make it work in a cohesive, logical manner.”

By contrast, Rodríguez’ compositions are free-flowing and poetic, with sonic textures that easily evoke feelings and images. Many of his favorite works were written to accompany stories, themes or projects, and others are personal expressions in a musical language that any living person can understand.

As with every great artist, this work begins with a paper and pencil.

“It’s the kind of music I wish I could hear if I went to a symphonic music concert,” he said, echoing the humbler sentiments of Vaughan Williams, an earlier humanist composer who crossed over into writing film scores.

“We live in a great time as composers and creators, in which we have unbelievable access to music from all times through the internet. We can listen, compare, analyze ... and when creating, we have all these amazing musical structures and masterpieces

As a highly sought-after orchestrator and conductor, Rodríguez travels to the great recording studios of the world to produce scores for television, film and video games. He has worked on projects for Amazon Prime, Francis Ford Coppola, and Steward Copeland, films such as Furious 7, and the video games Fortnite and Assassin’s Creed IV. He is also an important New World artist, with conducting and recording credits that span the Americas, but he is never far from his home country in his art.

Trained as a pianist and conductor, Rodríguez has been writing music since he first learned how to read it. As a composer and orchestrator, he is selftaught, which could explain why his music is free from the abstract, theoretical excesses that often make the work of purely academic composers inaccessible to general audiences.

But the comparison could end there, as Vaughan Williams’ legacy was in establishing a national voice for English art music. Rodriguez says, “I don’t feel the inner calling to be solely a nationalist composer.”

“My ritual is usually finding ideas in my mind, finding some of those notes at the piano, sketching some things on paper, and then taking my laptop to the local coffee shop to orchestrate,” he said. Photo by Martirene Alcántara.

to learn from. We live in a time when everything is possible in terms of structure and harmonic language.” In general, though his music doesn’t sound distinctly Mexican, the musics of Mexico are distinct and were a part of Rodríguez’ lifelong exposure. “Mosaico Mexicano was my very first orchestral work,” he

said of the piece that premiered in Fort Worth, Texas in 2000. “I wrote it as a way to practice orchestration, and also as a cure for homesickness — it was the first time I’d been away from my home, family and country.” The piece also serves as a symbolic starting point for his international career. “It was a great time and place for me to reflect

“One of the greatest pleasures I get is to see the full circle of music creation from the blank page, composing, orchestrating, then conducting ...” You can witness it for yourself in Elgin when he conducts his own Mosaico Mexicano and other great Mexican music with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, March 7th at the Hemmens Cultural Center. The Sing Along Messiah The Start of an Elgin Tradition On December 4th, 2020 the ECC Blizzard Theater will be hosting the first of what promises to be an exciting annual holiday tradition: The Greater Elgin Sing Along Messiah. Bringing together a vast community of the Arts in Elgin, the Sing Along Messiah committee is moving along with great enthusiasm and wide-spread support from all corners.

History of Messiah Handel’s beloved Messiah would most likely not thrive or even be known if it wasn’t for its connection to England’s first children’s charity through Foundling Hospital in London, which was established in 1739. The Messiah oratorio premiered in 1742 when the German-born Handel was the preeminent composer in his adopted home of England, drawing an immense crowd to support the Foundling Hospital. Since it’s interesting inception, the Messiah has become a cornerstone holiday tradition for communities around the world.

In line with this historical connection, the concept for Elgin’s Messiah Sing-along is to celebrate the act of giving. The idea of providing funds to the needy with the help of musical presentations is not new but always timely. Music has the ability to raise up and open hearts to suffering. The Sing Along Messiah with its audience participation component can enhance the emotional responses of the audience members.

Researchers from Wake Forest Medical Center found in their studies published in the Journal of Scientific Reports that “listening to favorite songs altered the connectivity between auditory brain areas and a region responsible for memory and social emotion consolidation.” Furthermore, the uniqueness of this project lies in the involvement of most of Elgin’s musical institutions: Elgin Symphony Orchestra, Elgin Master Chorale, Midwest Opera Theatre, Elgin’s Children’s Theatre, Judson University’s Demoss Center, Chamber Music on the Fox, Elgin Youth Symphony and many others. Each of the institutions represented intend to create a high artistic value for their audiences through their presentations. Elgin’s Sing Along Messiah, through its intimate experience of personal contribution to the musical presentation, will highlight the cultural experience of bridging the gap between humanity and human needs. The Sing Along Messiah committee will ensure this event becomes an Elgin holiday tradition, too. A great start to the holiday season, the Sing Along Messiah includes not only people from all walks of life but of all ages, all backgrounds, interests, etc. A warm, wonderful way to begin to celebrate the holidays can now start with joining with friends and family at the Sing Along Messiah. Any proceeds from the Sing Along Messiah will be donated to Food for Greater Elgin. For more information, check out the web site “greaterelginsing-alongmessiah.org” and be sure to put December 4th on your calendar!

Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Concert Event: En Pointe! In our second concerts of the 2019-20 season, we plunge ourselves into the flow, the life force, and the energy of ballet, exploring the connections between the physicality of dancing and music. With guest artist Luis Vazquez as our ballet master, we have learned not just how to plie, but how to do so with grace, intentionality, and meaning. We have examined connections between musical and balletic phrases, and in doing so, grew both our depth and breadth of understanding about music and motion. Performances and times: - 2:00pm Concert | Prelude, Sinfonia, and Percussion Ensemble (Sinfonia/Philharmonia); - 4:30pm Concert | Brass Choir, Percussion Ensemble (Sinfonia/Philharmonia), and Philharmonia; - 7:00pm Concert | Youth Symphony and Primo, Youth Symphony, Youth Symphony Percussion Ensemble. Alternative Library Accused of “Soft Banning” A Kane County Judge sided with Elgin City Library in its refusal to comply with a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, on grounds that the library is a private company and not subject to public scrutiny of its internal records. The suit was brought by James Kuderer of Elgin, who accused the library of suppressing selected titles from LibSearch, the library’s catalog lookup software, in a practice known as “soft banning.” “A library is supposed to be a defender of free speech and the free press,” Kuderer told Faque News. “I can’t believe they would trample all over the freedom of information. They exist for the purpose of free information.” In his affidavit filed in connection with the lawsuit, Kuderer documented several examples in which he entered book titles and subjects into LibSearch and was not shown any results he considered relevant. His strongest argument involved a famous novel by American author Ayn Rand. “I searched for Atlas Shrugged,

just like you see there,” he said, pointing to the text of his sworn testimony. “And LibSearch comes back with some map-type books, and a children’s pop-up book about shrugging, called Ida Noe.” He claims the search results must be selectively filtered because “they have the novel, I’ve seen it on the shelf!” The Elgin City Library, founded in 1968 as an alternative library funded primarily by private donations, has an extensive collection of books, vinyl record albums, movies on VHS tape and even framed art that can be borrowed for up three weeks. Their innovative Books By Phone service has grown steadily since its launch in 2017.

“It’s pretty likely that some of our materials aren’t cataloged into LibSearch,” said Delgado. “But we’re not really a research library anyway — people mostly like to browse books and drink coffee here.”

After the library refused, Kuderer filed suit in Circuit Court in January. “He continued to visit the library and use LibSearch to learn how to sue us,” said Delgado. “We have great resources for legal self-help, and he had no trouble finding those.”

Staff told Faque News that a traditional card catalog had been in use for almost thirty years at Elgin City Library. LibSearch, its first computerized catalog, was “We don’t like to developed by a speak ill of our pagroup of students trons,” said Library in 1995, and data Manager Martin entry tasks are Delgado, “but Mr. handled whenever Kuderer is deluJames Kuderer. An attorney representing the library explained that a registered letter from Kuderer was received in October requesting the computer source code of LibSearch and all the records in its database, citing the Illinois Freedom of Information Act.

Testifying in court, Kuderer claimed he searched the phrase “climate change skepticism” and was shown incomplete results. “All it found was environmentalist propaganda, and couple of books on philosophy,” he told the court. Despite the judge’s ruling, Kuderer continues to visit the library almost every day. He admits he no longer accepts help from the staff to locate materials, choosing instead to keep a log of what he considers to be an inherent bias in the LibSearch algorithms. “That system is more than happy to show you books on tattoos, polyamory, atheism, cannabis, hallucinogens, sadomasochism, you name it,” he said. “But ask it for a book on bad tax policy, you get zilch.” — FN

The Artist’s Toolbox by Michael J. Murschel, SD Every artist, regardless of discipline, should have a tool box of sorts, filled with resources, always available to get you through any situation in the creation of any piece of art. For any artistic discipline, be it visual, oral, writing, performance, multi-disipline, here are some of those essentials. Think of camera systems. Acquiring the ideal camera body is the first thing. It should fit into your hand perfectly. It should accommodate: • Lenses for every setting; regular, close-up, telephoto, macro, special efffect. • Tripods, full-size, tabletop, flexible, monopod. • Integrate with camera-mounted flash, tent lighting, hand-held ighting for light painting. • Digital and film. It must be impervious to weather, and come up clicking after being dropped off a cliff into the rocks and undersbrush below. And that is only the beginning. We actually cracked the lid on this tool box last month when we looked at Inspiration and how it functions for you, the artist, and informs your mission.

Mission

MARCH

Soulful Sparrow 10 Douglas Avenue

You have a mission, whether you know it or not. If you’ve ever seen the 1991 movie, “City Slickers, you probably recall that conversation between the cowboy, Curly, played by Jack Palance, and city dweller, Mitch Robbins, played by Billy Crystal. Curly asks Mitch if he knows the meaning of life? No? Curly: One thing. Just one thing. …

Mitch: But, what is the “one thing?” Curly: [smiles] That’s what you have to find out. True. So very true. Without that, your art is like a ship without a rudder. You will never get on course and find the port towards which your entire life is set, unless you have that rudder. That one thing. Get that right, and the rest is … let’s say, less challenging. You have been put here in this place at this time with these resources and your vision to do one certain thing.

Vision You should have some idea, notion, or inkling of where your art is taking you and your audience. What do you want as the final outcome for all concerned? Art of any sort should change everyone involved. Having a vision for this not only provides you with a reason to keep on doing what you are doing, but it also provides you with focus.

“Here am I, Lord. Send me.” Because, if you are willing to go certain places with your art, in the faith which undergirds it for you, there are at the very least, trade-offs. Time. Resources. Public opinion. Selling out or staying the course.

Skill Of all of the accessories in your tool box, this is probably the only one which truly can be learned. How you hold the brush. Where you place your feet. How you project your voice. Which form of thesaurus to use. How to place your lights. What stone to use. Which chords are most evocative.

Next Time We will look at ways to add each of these tools into your artist’s tool box. Till then, keep on creating. And enjoy!

Please ... I’d love to hear how what you have in your artist’s tool box. Contact me at: michael@michaeljmurschel.com

Focus This is that honing in on what you want to achieve through your art. Do you have a theme for what you do? Do you need one? Are you concentrating on, to wax a little Marshall McLuhanesque, the medium, or the message? Does your art have a social agenda? A religious or spiritual foundation? And to which market are you playing? And … and, is making money at your art a key piece of what you do?

Dedication How willing are you to sacrifice? Do you say of your art, in a religious or spiritual moment,

BRAVO Serial Fiction: “The Good Catch”

Part Six:

The Rebel by Jeffrey R. Pierce There was a boy outside Jo’s bedroom window, with his face pressed against the screen. “Jo, is that Lesley?” She was watching closely and nodded without breaking her gaze. The rest of us looked at each other knowingly, and continued down the sidewalk. When he heard us coming, the boy crouched behind some dogwood bushes, trying to hide. “Hello, Lesley, we see you,” I said. He walked over to us, head down. “Are you looking for Jo?” “Yes, ma’am.”

“She was visiting her neighbors this evening. Where’s your bike?” “I don’t have a bike, ma’am.” “Well, where’s your house?” “Fourth street.” “Son, if you want to see Jo sometime, knock on her front door like a gentleman,” Evelyn said. “But only when the sun is shining.” After that, we saw very little of Lesley. Between school, the short Fall and Winter days and his Saturday chores, the only time he could call was Sunday afternoon, and not every Sunday was sunny. For all she knew about nets and fishing, Jo had never set foot on a boat. Birgit hadn’t fished since her brother returned from the War, and I was on Lake Michigan only one time: attending a Milwaukee Knights of Columbus function with my father on a small steamer. Early November 1948 was unusually warm, and since most of the skippers gave their war

veterans time off with pay on Armistice Day, Birgit arranged for us to crew her father’s boat that day. She outfitted us with overalls, boots and oilskin slickers, which we put on over our clothes at the docks early that morning. We headed out into Green Bay and cruised along the west side of the Door peninsula until we spotted a row of floats striped asymmetrically with red, white and navy blue like the Norwegian flag. We were brought there because that particular gillnet was one Jo had extensively repaired. The captain slowed the diesel engine to an idle. “Should we haul in your net, Jo?” he asked. “See if it works?” Birgit leaned over the transom and hooked the float line with a long pole, then helped her father attach it to a winch. “Here we go!” he yelled as he started cranking. “You wanna help me?” he asked Jo. She had sat still for the journey, but did not hesitate to get up and grasp the handle of the winch. After a couple of turns, the captain let go while Jo leaned hard into the work. “She’s strong!” he smiled, “She can work on my crew anytime.” As the net came up out of the water, the broad silver sides of whitefish started to appear beneath the surface. One or two at a time were dragged up by the net, caught behind the gills, wriggling their tails. “It’s a good catch, Jo!” Birgit exclaimed as Jo heaved on the winch handle. “Mighty good catch!” her father added. He and Birgit

removed each fish and tossed it into a large square tub. Jo paused, breathing heavily, and stared at a netted fish, its mouth gaping and closing. “It’s a good catch, Jo,” I encouraged, “you should be very proud.” As the weather improved in the Spring of 1949, Evelyn resumed her Saturday evening visits at our apartment, though we didn’t always have ice cream, and we didn’t always have Jo. At age twelve, she liked her privacy and was allowed to stay home alone until Charles got home from work. It was a comfortable arrangement, and when the Summer days grew long, Evelyn lingered with us in the cool evenings, talking about politics, women’s rights, education and racial prejudice. Lesley called for Jo on her days off from the net shop, and they were allowed to go by themselves as far as the park or the schoolyard, exchanging hand signals all along the way.

One Saturday in July, Charles came home sick and went straight to bed by six. Evelyn stayed late with us that night and had a story to tell come Monday. “On my way home, I saw Jo’s window screen was off and she was gone,” she said. “I waited up reading ‘til about 10:30, and then I heard something outside. So I went out, and the screen was back on. When I come back inside, Jo was in the bathroom.”

in the Fall. Birgit and I created lessons on labor unions, the Conservation Corps, feminism and psychology. Evelyn was keen on geography, civil rights and points of Methodist doctrine. Jo was bored, even depressed by her studies, but took renewed interest in her work, which grew to include fancy lettering painted on boats, and knitting exquisite cabled hats and sweaters for fishermen. Her talents were astonishing and commanded a good price.

The next morning, she said, she found Jo’s bra stuffed in the pocket of her shorts. In discussing the situation with Charles, she left out that detail.

The night before her 13th birthday in March 1950, Jo sneaked out of her room again. She was gone for over two hours and climbed back in through her window with hickeys on her chest and muddy shoes.

For the rest of the Summer, Jo’s privileges were greatly curtailed: no alone time, and no more unchaperoned visits with Lesley.

Charles was furious. The next day he screwed her window sashes together and fastened the storm pane permanently from the outside.

Her work continued, and her home schooling began again

“Chief don’t like her rebel streak,” Evelyn moaned, the

following Saturday night at our place. “He won’t abide it.” She took another sip of aquavit. “She gotta stop seein’ that boy before she get pregnant.” “How is Jo doing?” I asked. “She cried. She cried the first time since she’s a baby.” Birgit refilled her glass. “Maybe we need to speak with Lesley’s father,” I said, “to keep him away from Jo for a while.” “He don’t have no father,” Evelyn interrupted. “He live with his ma ... and granny.” “Poor boy,” I sighed. “He has no example. No wonder he lacks self-control.” I looked at Birgit. “But Jo is special, she has such a bright future ahead,” I insisted. “We mustn’t let her spoil it.” Evelyn stayed until she began to sober up, then walked home around ten. Twenty minutes later the phone rang. “Rita,” Evelyn sobbed, “Come over here right now.” As Birgit and I put our clothes back on, we heard a siren and saw flashing lights in the direction of the Durant residence.

Our Heritage is Our Heart words and pictures by Barbara Broeske Sometimes we just don’t see what’s beautifully supportive in our everyday lives. These vital elements can graciously recede from consciousness, but it doesn’t reduce their role. Like, how your mom and dad were always there, invisibly keeping you afloat, so you

could grow to offer your best, instinctively. Family and Community are important in shaping a constructive identity. This old Victorian city here on the Fox provides us that same supportive function, whether we know it or not. Our built environment adds sup-

port and value to our identity, as individuals at every level of our community. The city we live in contributes strongly but unconsciously to who we are now… and who we are becoming. We are nourished and enriched every day, when we honor our heritage. We grow confident and creative by recognizing and preserving our best efforts, brought forward, allowed to remain as very useful reminders of the unique gifts we offer to our community. That’s what Elgin’s rich architectrural environment does for us everyday as we make our lives here, working, going to school, enjoying family activities and civic events. We benefit from living in such a rich context. This old city offers a very distinct vintage look that bridges the centuries in this place that grew beside a river crossing that linked the settlement of Chicago to the lead mines in Galena. Then a railroad created commercial opportunities here, always built upon vital spiritual and cultural underpinnings that stitched themselves together and made the rich quilt that Elgin exhibits today. You can see what remains of this century-anda-half “great civic endeavor” all around you, if you look. If you discern the value of this rich catalog of architectural diamonds: industrial, commercial, residential. Its cumulative value is a spiritual one. Our heritage is our heart. As we become sensitive to the treasure we still have, we become acutely aware of all

we’ve lost … through ignorance, simple short-sightedness, misunderstanding, greed, or just blind disrespect for what those before us so artfully planned, beautifully built, and certainly hoped would last. But now we find already too many gorgeous one-of-a-kind structures, schools, churches, commercial and civic edifices that proudly represented our community values, are gone forever. Our built environment is our common community identity, for better or worse. It reminds us of who we are now, and who our valued forebears were (and may still be). But it also shows us who we can become. What we allow to remain present in our lives inspires us, our children, our neighbors. This context matters. It’s the matrix that forms us, mostly unconsciously, but nonetheless powerfully. So be conscious and choose what you value, what you want to remain, to shape the next generation. After a piece of the civic fabric is removed, an old photo may suggest a ghostly aspect. Some document might stir the imagination to conjure the once grand place, to ask why it’s not still here. Until a treasured building is threatened, we can be complacent, thinking “it’s always been here, so it will always be here.” But sometimes nothing remains, only hints and stories, and with luck, maybe a photograph or an exhibit panel in a museum … The fate of the Elgin Nation-

al Watch Company was the largest in the world, a giant footprint in this City for over a century. There are residents of Elgin that have no idea it ever existed, the heart and lifeblood of this city, creating much more than watches: homes, schools, generations of local families, growing businesses, cultural activities, civic energy, world-wide renown, and pride for a century. Surprising how heritage fades. Could the Clock Tower front portion of the factory serve the community that loved it, by providing unique residential and commercial units, or some other innovative reuse. Now we have acres of pavement and a sad strip mall, a very unfortunate outcome following decades of weeds growing at that once-significant location.

At last a new consciousness is emerging. A new sensitivity for reuse of what we already have, recycling what we’ve already built beautifully. People with vision are embracing the vintage patina of a real city with traditional, walkable neighborhoods full of affordable vintage homes (with porches!) near an actual downtown. Elgin is now that rare attractive community. The City in the Suburbs is being rediscovered. All things authentic and charming are now sought! Smart innovators, entrepreneurs, new businesses, and young families are finding a place here to grow. Better late than never. Time for us to reassess our unique built environment and present it to innovative thinkers and developers. I write this as the David C. Cook Co. threatens to tear down their neo-classical building at 850 N. Grove that has graced the streetscape since 1901 behind a picture perfect Burr Oak. This property nestles into a sought-after neighborhood of Elgin’s finest historic homes, just north of downtown, along the east bank of the Fox. Our efforts seek to educate the property owners, as well as the greater Elgin community, of the value and necessity of saving this structure. The Northeast Neighborhood of Elgin and other concerned folk are working together with the City of Elgin and representatives of the D.C. Cook orga-

nization to reconsider their plan to demolish the building. We are actively seeking appropriate developers and plans for reuse of this unique property. There is only a brief window of time available now for us to research developers, and to educate ourselves about steps to take to preserve Elgin heritage. Stay tuned for info and updates at SaveDCCook.com. Learn how you can help save this beautiful structure from demolition. In the meantime, visit the charming Cook building, featuring the most beautiful oak tree in the region, also at risk of destruction. Take photos, make paintings, record your thoughts to share with the community … because “when it’s gone, it’s gone ... forever is a long time.” What we value and choose to preserve, shapes us, and our children’s future. —BB
