Expression: A Love Beyond Form or Medium

The Death of Inspiration ... or is it? by Michael J. Murschel, SD The blank page. Blank canvas. Musical instrument in its case. Script unread. Song unsung. As artists, we’ve all been there. Many of us more than once. It’s that wall which marks the loss and the seeming death of inspiration and of creativity at some point, and some hit that wall again and again. Call it what you want. Writer’s block. Artist’s block. Loss of inspiration. Loss of drive. Of insight. Passion. Intuition. Sometimes that seems unavoidable, especially when that loss comes as the result of a physical condition which makes it difficult, if not impossible, to go forward with your art. Sometimes, it is that hopeless and helpless feeling that the Muse, the fickle Promethean bearer of the spark of creativity,

has abandoned you. Or, perhaps, has been banished by you because of a re-examination of how and why you do your art. The results are all the same. Profound sadness. Emptiness. Frustration. And angst. Lots and lots of angst. Sound familiar? I know how all-too-fragile any art can be. How the loss of that spark of inspiration can devastate you. But also, how joy-filled reconnecting with it can be by working through, around, over, under, and just plain finding another route back to it. My understanding of this, compassion for it, and dedication to resolving it is drawn from a broad perspective in myself and my own art, and across a host of other art forms and individuals and groups.

September 2019

In fact, so focused on the significance of artistic inspiration am I that my private practice revolves around bringing people through the challenges of life and back into the light of living. That may be through my work as a ritual design artist and presenter, crafting highly personalized funerals and memorials. Perhaps through transforming the lives of two individuals into one in uniquely memorable weddings and handfastings. Through my verbal arts of hypnosis and guided imagery. Or by my art as a writer. With all of that in mind, I offer you this reflection. Actually, the same reflection twicetold, but refocused the second time. Art, true art, is filled with joy and grief, and getting the two in balance is the creative flint-and-steel that keeps that flame of creativity alive in us all.

A Reflection on the Loss of a Loved One So, I am sitting in a cemetery in the early morning, watching the shadows sneak across the new-mown grass and disappear before the daylight into the realm of the woods beyond the confines of this sacred space. Over my shoulder, on the other side of the yet-night-darkened face of a steep hill are the graves of those whom I have laid to rest, offering prayers, readings, memories, stories, joys for having known them, tears that they

are now removed from this plane of existence, and sometimes ‌ sometimes simply silence. I marvel at how interconnected life is, how it reaches out from people we have never met to affect us through the actions they have set into motion, and which now, if ever so subtly, inform our lives going forward. These stones, these monuments, mausolea, obelisks, crypts, and columbaria, each and every one of them displays art designed to tell us something of the lives which now quietly have come to this place, and gone on from here. And these carved, and etched, and sculpted landmarks make me think about our calling as artists. Artists of word, and image, and motion, and senses, and life, and death, and everything in between. Grief surrounds this place. But hopefully, it is grief which is eventually realigned to new ways of living. Of course, it will never be life as it once was, but if it is lived in the light of the life memorialized here, then there is at least some hope of carrying the legacy of that precious life on into our world. To rekindle that spark within ourselves. To begin to live again for ourselves, as our loved one would want for us so to do. And through our finding our way back into that different light of day, to begin to relate to the shadows which ever accompany us,

and to weave them into something new and of value. For ourselves. And for our world. Define your light by your shadows, and you will discover a depth to your life which may, in so very many ways, be even more profound than it ever was before. —#— We, as artists, are infinitely capable of deep and abiding love for our art. Our art is our passion. And when we can no longer connect with our love, our art, that is cause for great and seemingly irreconcilable grief. But that is the nature of true art, for it is filled with joy and grief, and realizing that and keeping it all in balance produces a creative synergism which perseveres throughout all the challenges of life. Now, please reread this reflection and notice that, while some of the words change, and those that do change are now in italics, the focus and the message is still the same.

A Reflection on the Loss of Our Art So, I am sitting in my studio in the early morning, watching the shadows sneak across the floor and disappear before the daylight into the realm of the corners beyond the confines of this sacred space. Over my shoulder, on the other side of the

The meeting will start at 7 pm and our esteemed speaker will be Pam Otto, naturalist for the St Charles Park District. The topic will be Stream Water Quality as Determined by Indicator Species. The public is invited to attend this meeting which is free. helped make this ad possible.

And for our world. Define your light by your shadows, and you will discover a depth to your life which may, in so very many ways, be even more profound than it ever was before. —#— Subtle differences. But the parallels are obvious. Grief is part and parcel of both. But so is hope. “The risk of love is loss, and

the price of loss is grief,” writes Hilary Stanton Zunin, in an often-quoted passage at funerals. And yes, that is true. For our loved ones. And by extension, for our art. What is not often quoted, though, is the continuation of Zunin’s quotation, which boldly states: “But the pain of grief is only a shadow when compared with the pain of never risking love.” Art demands that we risk loving it. The Muse calls to us, and we are imperiled whether we respond to it or not. But the joys of responding to that call far outweigh the lingering sadness of later years when we wished we had risked for its sake. If you write, if you paint, if you dance, if you create in any way, shape, or form, you obviously must love what you do. It is your passion. And because you are passionate about what you do, whatever form that takes, it has become an essential part of you. And if that essence is taken from you through any means, understand that you still have that link to your creativity within you. Sometimes you can work through it on your own. Other times, colleagues can help. At times, more focused strategies are best. It may need to be rewired, rerouted, or restored, and it may not look at all the same going forward. To paraphrase Zunin, “The pain of grief is only a shadow when compared with the pain of never risking your artistic expression.” — MJM Michael J Murschel, SD, works on deep levels with artists and creatives through The Driftwood Center for Spiritual Health, his downtown Elgin-based private practice providing alternatives and mentoring for those who want to nurture their artist attitude, or who are experiencing creative and spiritual crisis. Ubu Roi is considered a wild, bizarre and comic play, significant for the way the hero overturns cultural rules, norms and conventions. Further, it’s a hilariously stylized burlesque of power, greed, disrespect, and the bourgeois propensity to abuse authority engendered by success. Ubu is an anti-hero: vulgar, gluttonous, dishonest, stupid, voracious, greedy, cruel, cowardly, narcissistic and evil!

One band leaves the stage, and in less than twenty minutes, another one has their rig stood up and ready to rock. It’s New Nights, winner of the 2019 Battle of the Bands, headlining at the King of the Mountain show in downtown Elgin.

“There’s a couple metalheads in here, there’s punk rock, there’s soft indie rock,” says bassist Nicky Fioravanti, Dom’s brother. “Each of us likes different types of music and we’ve come to share it with each other and learn to like it.”

Without needing a sound check, monitors, or a mixing board, they launch straight into their original music with scorching guitar riffs and an onslaught of drums. It’s a dense, rhythmically tight and balanced sound that can seamlessly shift from a heavy quarter note feel into a runaway double-time palpitation.

Playing almost exclusively original music, the band builds up songs that germinate from guitar parts, followed by an open jam that explores different structures and tempos.

The assembled crowd is a little different from those who swayed along with the first three bands. “The scene everybody gets involved with here is an indie pop kind of thing now. That’s just what people like here,” says drummer Dom Fioravanti. “We don’t really do that, so it’s kind of hard.” This quintet of self-taught musicians brings a variety of influences to the band, which describes its sound as simply “alternative rock.”

“One guy starts noodling, and another guy starts noodling,” says guitarist Max Santo. “And then Dom starts hitting stuff, and Tyler listens to it and thinks, maybe I’ll say this ...” “A lot of times I’ll write stuff and I don’t what song it’s for,” explains vocalist Tyler Johnson. “I just write, and they’ll make a song and I’ll look through my notes and try to find stuff that fits, and sing it over the music.” It’s been a successful approach that has produced nearly two hours worth of music, and enough fans to take them to second place in last year’s Battle, after only a few months together as a group. As of September,

they’ve been playing together for just over a year and a half, though they’ve each known some of their bandmates for years. “Max and I go way back,” says guitarist Nick Connolley. “We all went to the same school, though we never really talked. Then Dom texted me, like, hey do you want to be in a band? Same with Tyler.” Growing up in homes in the far west part of Elgin, they all graduated from Burlington Central High and have become close friends. As Nick puts it, “We always say we’re friends first. We’re not just coming together once a week to be a band. We hang out.” They consider it a crucial element to their success thus far, because the personal loyalty survives all sorts of creative differences. “There’s five people in the band,” notes Tyler, “so we couldn’t go into it not expecting to argue about something musically.” It’s a reality of all creative partnerships that artists’ egos can clash. “It always ends up being constructive,” Max reasons. “Compromise is hard but we usually figure it out.” “We can argue about the band for two hours,” admits Tyler, “but when we’re done practicing, we’re all laughing.” Purifying the potent creative chemistry has been part of New Nights’ continuous evolution since their first show at Side Street Studio Arts. “There’s no place that we like playing more than Side Street,” says Nick. “Just the environment, and the people who show up are always so supportive, it’s awesome.” It’s tough for an original band to gain traction without the help of a vibrant arts community. Typical live music venues aren’t interested in unknown talent playing original songs, unless they can make money somehow. The result is usually a small audience of the band’s own family and friends who paid the tavern a cover charge just to see them perform. “We’re trying to build up our reputation as local artists,” Max says, “as one of the go-to bands to check out if you’re in Elgin.”

Max Santo. Photos by Brandon Garlick.

“We have 500 followers on Instagram and that’s literally all due to Side Street,” Nick says. “Without that we would never be where we are now. We owe them a lot.” That includes the name New Nights: it’s just the name the guys submitted on the 2018 Battle of the Bands application — an intermediate result of an unfinished brainstorming session. With one EP already in distribution and another set to release this Autumn, the band is enlarging its footprint with a collection of energetic, well-crafted, and listenable tracks that display skilled playing and an impressive command of song structure and proportion. On the stage, they plan out sets that sustain the energy between songs, and make room for standout individual performances, with lots of audience engagement. It’s a convincing presentation that earned them an encore at their last show. That kind of success is encouraging. Max admits, “If this could be what we do for a living, in any kind of way, that’s enough of a dream achieved for me.” Tyler agrees. In the mean time, “It’s more of a ‘be here now’ situation,” observes Nicky. “We’re playing local shows and it’s so fun. We’ll just go as far as it goes.” “The thought of people listening to your music, enjoying it, getting something from it, that’s the coolest thing ever,” Nick says. “And rock music is coming back in a big way in 2020. I have this gut feeling.”  —JP

Artist Internship Program

Every month in these pages we tell you about dozens of incredible arts experiences happening within a few miles of your home in the Elgin area. Some of the theatre companies and musical groups have been around for decades and some of them just popped up. The volume and variety never ceases to amaze.

Sunday, September 22nd, 4-8pm Elgin’s Riverside Drive Tarragon Catering will prepare a multi-course meal using produce from local farms. Seating is limited to 100 guests! Tickets are $75, available starting September 1st at eventbrite.com Follow us on Facebook for event updates!

But there are still more creative forces at work around us and inside us, and they are also happening every week of every month in the studios, halls, conference rooms and storefronts of Elgin. It’s the collective work of artist development, which eventually matures and becomes the visual art, dance, theatre, literature and music that fills our galleries, pages and performance spaces. So we are attempting to devote some paper and ink just to these artist development opportunities that dare us to try a new form of expression (or become better at one) at a workshop, audition, critique group, master class, lecture, open studio or other place where artists practice. We’ll call it Mpulse. (M is for Marquee.) For this section, we invite your announcements for all manner of artist education, development and advancement opportunities like those listed above. We will also move all calendar events from the FEED that were previously coded “Creativity” to our special Mpulse FEED, set aside just for our readers seeking to channel more energy into the Arts, whether it’s a pastime or a passion.

Now it’s your chance to have this amazing Morris BBQ from back then. We Highly recommend you pre-order. 2 W HAT F RINGE I S The first Fringe Festival was held in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1947. It was a local effort to create a festival that was not of the mainstream, but rather something different and unique. What started out as a festival of shoestring productions and a catch-as-catch-can attitude quickly grew into a model for other citites and other artists. Now, more than 100 Fringe Festivals happen around the globe every year. There are more than 50 Fringe Festivals in North America. The Elgin Fringe Festival adds to this collective of creative artists as it enters its sixth year, featuring over 100 performances over two weekends along with 200+ artists and performers. Inspired by the idea that downtown Elgin is a place for artistic expression and growth, the Elgin Fringe Festival was first launched in 2013. With the help of a talented and dedicated committee and an army of volunteers, the Elgin Fringe Festival continues to grow with the theme that “Whatever Happens ... Happens.”

W HO R UNS I T The Elgin Fringe Festival is run by a committee comprised of Amanda Harris, Tanner Melvin, Erin Rehberg, Sarah Manata Smith and Adrian Mesino. Additionally the Elgin Fringe Festival would not be possible without these excellent venues: Side Street Studio Arts, Elgin Art Showcase, Blue Box Cafe, Hemmens Cultural Center, Elgin Public House, Martini Room, Elgin History Museum, and The Loft of Elements Preserved.

H OW I T W ORKS A Fringe Festival is an uncurated, uncensored showcase of theater, dance, music, art, spoken word, comedy, magic, you name it. The work presented is serious, whimsical, rough, polished, funny, and sad. It can have nudity and swearing as well as people with their clothes on speaking English in a dignified way. In other words, a Fringe Festival has something for everyone and it is open for all. Tickets are free or $5 or $10. The artists participating range from amateurs to professionals. The material is original, fresh and new to the world. And the shows are short and simply staged so you can see as many shows as possible.

F RINGE I S E ASY Participating in the Elgin Fringe is easy. Parking is free, and there is plenty of it on the street, in parking decks, and garages. All the venues are walkable and some are accessible — The Theater at SSSA and Elgin Public House are accessible only by stairs. Wear comfortable clothes. Each venue has seating and is air-conditioned — some stronger than others.

Because 100% of ticket revenues goes directly to the artists, proceeds from button sales are needed to help cover the costs of producing the festival. You will need to buy a button before you can buy tickets. Having a button also gets you into FREE shows that don’t require a ticket. Buttons will be available for purchase at the door only for performances at Blue Box Cafe and Martini Room.

Sometimes called Side Street Studio Arts, Fringe Central is your place to buy EFF Buttons, purchase tickets, ask questions, complain a little, hang out a lot, look at art, buy EFF t-shirts and merchandise, review shows, and more! Come and see us at 15 Ziegler Court during the hours listed below. (Saturday, September 7th find us at the Family Fringe at Elgin History Museum, 360 Park Street.) DAVID BOYLE Personal Storytelling

Chicago Artist Robert Alan's "Doug" uses rich text, nuanced physicality, and his brand of offbeat humor to explore such concepts as morality, human communication, and adversity through the eyes of a septuagenarian who has been confined to his home for his entire life—until now.

David Boyle is back for a sixth run at the Elgin Fringe Festival. The Pioneer Press in Minneapolis had this to say about him: “At turns hilarious, thought-provoking and touching, he is a wonderful storyteller ... The audience hung on every word ..."

AMERICAN MANIACS UNLIMITED Manifest Destiny Life is chaos and disorder. Madness is the only currency. It is in these times we turn to our only hope for salvation: the silly. American Maniacs UnLTD present a tactical nuclear warhead of absurdity, puns, pickle jars, sword fights, beat poetry slams, alligators, and unconfirmed rumors of pirates. Replace your existential dread with giggles for an hour and then return back to the dread. It’s the American way.

TANGI COLOMBEL Pardon My French

Musicians have an irresponsibility to misinform the public about unimportant issues, and I take that irresponsibility quite unseriously. Enjoy a sidesplitting hour of songs from the mundane to the mighty and help stop the ongoing orcish genocide.

A French cabaret show, in English, bien sûr! An artist from France jokes about his peregrination from his hometown to Palm Beach, and sings old-fashioned French songs with audience participation. If you’re not convinced, come anyway, because this is a French guy who speaks proper English (and Spanish), and you don’t catch that kind of fish every day.

It runs Friday thru Sunday, September 13-15th. Find out more at wdundeeheritagefest.org. 6p, West Dundee, North First Street wdundeeheritagefest.org. Free A Fox River Testimony: Opening Reception About 20 selected works from A Fox River Testimony, the collection of original Fox River paintings by artist Joel Sheesley will be on view until November 15th. Joel partnered with The Conservation Foundation’s Fox River Initiative, an environmental education and outreach program about the Fox River and the Fox Valley. Art of the Fox is one of three key pillars for the Fox River Initiative, and was intended to broaden interest in the health of the Fox River by appealing to the river’s aesthetic value. Joel painted 90+ landscapes in two years travelling from West Dundee all the way down to Ottawa where the Fox joins the Illinois River. The goal of the Art of the Fox project was to help people see the Fox River more deeply. The more they see their river, the more they will connect with it, enjoy it and help care for it. Thank you to the Conservation Foundation for helping organize this great exhibit! 6.30p, Elgiln History Museum, 360 Park Street 847.742.4248 elginhistory.org Two Beer Tommy 8p, Danny’s on Douglas, 231 Douglas Avenue 847.742.5400 dannyspizzaelgin.com

Since colleges take the higher of the two scores, taking both tests gives students the best chance of gaining admissions and scholarships. This course incorporates materials from both tests because the ACT® and SAT® tests share 75% of the same content. For the 25% of each test that is unique, we clearly indicate ACT®- versus SAT®-only content. Both tests evaluate the same basic skills so you are also developing critical problem-solving skills rather than learning how to memorize problems. This course incorporates an SAT pre-test and a post-test. The course then includes 12 hours of core subject instruction. Students should come to class with several pencils and a calculator. Grove Avenue 847.742.2411 gailborden.info Silent City Memorial Dedication When Bluff City Cemetery opened in 1889, many of the graves and monuments from Channing Street Cemetery moved to this location. When there were no family members to pay the cost of moving the graves, the remains stayed at Channing. When they started to dig the foundation for Channing School in 1968, many remains surfaced during the digging and were brought to Bluff City for re-burial in a common grave. Although the City of Elgin buried the remains, a memorial marker was never placed on the site. Local Elgin historian Steve Stroud and author of the booklet, Silent City: A History of Elgin’s City Cemeteries, was working towards creating a marker before he died earlier this year. With the funds received in memory of Steve, his vision of a memorial headstone for those buried in the common grave will become a reality. Join Elgin History Museum to dedicate a granite memorial marker in memory of the remains buried in the common grave area in Bluff City Cemetery. A tree

This summer, the dozens of small book cabinets mounted on posts around Elgin are being joined by a few dorm room-sized refrigerators.

James Hoenig on the Ale Boxes, Etc. Facebook page. “We invite you to join our worldwide tasting network right on the street where you live.”

Called “Little Free Fridges,” the new movement is a spinoff from the Little Free Library concept, in which a small collection of books is shared among neighbors from a box located along a sidewalk, typically in front of a house.

“I dropped off some leftover chili,” said east sider John Marston about the Little Free Fridge down the block from his home. “And I helped myself to a carry out container with some pretty good egg foo yung.”

“The whole take-a-book, leave-abook idea made so much sense to us that we decided to try this,” said Nels Harger who put up the first Little Free Fridge in front of their house on Fairfax Street.

The Little Free Fridge on Kossow Street honors the ale box tradition by keeping it stocked with Old Style and Modelo beer, and in return has received contributions of lemon bars, homemade wine and uneaten burritos.

“We’ve put out leftover tuna casserole, salad dressing we haven’t used for a while, cranberry sauce, stuff like that,” he said. “Our kids won’t drink milk after the expiration date, so we put it in the Little Free Fridge.” The practice was first started in neighborhoods of Milwaukee, where home brewers would place their latest concoctions in the outdoor fridge to share with other enthusiasts, entirely on the honor system.

Originally dubbed “ale boxes,” the free fridges began to receive contributions of cheese and sausage along with the beer. Crackers, mustards, and homemade jams and chutneys soon followed. “Foodies like to share their creations and sample other people’s flavors as well,” wrote

The Fridge on Penn Court in the Tarrytown subdivision has been known to stock homemade sloe gin and flavored vodkas. At press time there was a half empty box of sangria, two slices of pizza in plastic wrap, Worcestershire sauce, an overripe banana and a few slices of deli meat from Jewel-Osco in a zip-loc bag. For now, the Little Free Fridge network is small, and no good alternatives to long electrical extension cords have yet been devised, but the foodies who participate are persistent and freely boast of its benefits. “When I walk the dog after supper,” said Marston, “it’s really nice to be able to drop off my last couple slices of turkey meatloaf and grab some jalapeno-stuffed olives and a beer.”

Free The Mercy Seat One of the first major theatrical responses to 9/11 concerns a man who worked at the World Trade Center but was away from the office during the attack – with his mistress who is also his boss. Expecting that his family will believe he was killed in the towers’ collapse, he contemplates using the tragedy to run away and start a new life with his lover. In The Mercy Seat, author Neil LaBute shows two self-absorbed, flawed characters so realistic that audiences will both relate to and loathe them. “I have written a play about two New Yorkers who face down one another and their own selves on a long, dark morning of the soul. I hold the mirror up higher and try to examine how selfishness can still exist during a moment of national selflessness.” The 100-minute, one-act play is performed by Justin Schaller and Shannon Mayhall, directed by Richard Pahl. This play contains frank discussion of sex and sexual politics and is intended for mature audiences

BRAVO Serial Fiction: “The Marvelous Mary Alice”

Tutor Training Raise your hand to become a volunteer tutor

Part Seven:

Mary Alice’s New Rules of Life by Deb Kollar “Birthday parties are for children,” Mary Alice argued when her son had suggested a celebration for her 70th birthday. She remembered her new adventures over the past six months and decided to take a chance. “Although wine, canapes and good friends have been known to change a woman’s mind.”

The party is in the parlor of her Victorian home. Sitting next to Mary Alice on the red settee, her future granddaughter Astrid passes the last gift. A card is attached, signed by her best friend, Delilah. Examining Mary Alice’s face, the teen says, “I can’t believe you’re 70 years old. You’ve held up pretty well.” “Correction, young lady. It’s exceptionally well. I’ve used Oil of Olay for 50 years.”

She is not sure how Larry translated this into cocktail weenies and sherbet punch. But her dearest friends and family are at the party. As one gets older, this is what matters most.

@LiteracyConnection1

Mary Alice would have cried foul, if someone had predicted her first grandchild would be a goth teenager who likes to draw skull tattoos on her arm with a black Sharpie marker. Still, the kid has spunk. Her son requested Grandma Jeanie’s engagement ring a week ago to propose to Tabby Jo. She said yes and they both agreed that Larry would adopt Astrid too. Her late husband Walter would have been proud. So would Mary Alice’s mother who had worn the oval cut ring for 54 years. Delilah is not one for waiting.

“Let’s go Mary Alice. Open my gift. It’s a doozy.” Inside the Victoria’s Secret box is a cake topper and red negligee. “One for the wedding. One for the honeymoon,” Delilah winks. A hand shoots up behind the guests. “I’m in full agreement with both,” Harry announces. “Harry Levenstein, you be quiet. I will not be using these anytime soon.” Delilah turns to their friend Trudy. “I bet they’ll be married by next spring.” When Mary Alice was introduced to Harry at water aerobics last month, he warned her he would not give up pursuing her. Every morning on his speed walk, he rings the bell and leaves a daffodil peeking out from the porch mailbox with some corny note like, “My heart is racing for you, Doll.” Mary Alice hears Walter Junior’s low whine. From her vantage point, she can see into the dining room where the neighbor’s two children, Miguel and Rosie, are tossing cocktail weenies to a happy trio of canines. El Jefe, the neighbor’s bossy Chihuahua, is flanked by his two muscle mutts: Walter Junior, her Great Dane; and Chopper, the stout Pit Bull her son recently went back to Anderson Animal Shelter to adopt. She feels Harry’s gentle hand on her shoulder as he whispers: “You have one more present, Doll.” Mary Alice eyes her boyfriend suspiciously. “It’s time to heal old wounds,” her son adds by the foyer. “Hap-

py birthday, Ma.” He steps aside to reveal newly arrived guests he let into the party. Her daughter, Mary Claire stands erect but unsure underneath the archway, holding the arm of a sandy-haired gentleman for support. “You remember David?” Mary Alice wavers as she stands up. Too many years have passed since she last saw her. “Claire?” To hell with formality. She rushes to embrace her daughter. Looking up, she recognizes a grownup version of the teenage boy who dated Claire throughout high school. “Can we go on the front porch and talk, Ma?” They sit down on the hanging swing with their cups of punch. “I remember Grandma Jeanie out there pulling weeds around the flowerbeds like a soldier on a mission.” Mary Alice smiles. “We come from a long line of determined women.” The swing’s creaking emphasizes the silence between them. Mary Alice has played this reunion in her mind dozens of times. It is difficult to know where to start. “David asked me to marry him,” Claire blurted. “What about Doctor Dan?” “We divorced. Six months after Papa’s funeral.” Mary Alice knew her son-inlaw was trouble the day she met him. He was a young, narcissistic doctor who was charismatic enough to talk a patient into cutting off an arm. And if the price was right, he would.

“I’m sorry, Ma. I was ashamed I let him treat me that way, and I knew the three of you were only trying to help. I felt so low.” “I’m sorry too.” Mary Alice covers her daughter’s hand with her own. “I shouldn’t have blamed you for staying with him. What did I know? Your papa treated me like a queen.” “Do you like this guy? Harry?” Mary Alice nods her head. “I do. He doesn’t let me get away with anything. Makes me laugh. Surprises me.” Claire agrees. “I learned the hard way that’s all you really need. Oh, I almost forgot … You know I can’t have children. Dan would never adopt, but David loves kids. He teaches over at St. John’s. We’ve done everything this past year with DCFS and we’re in the final stages of adopting three siblings!” In her excitement, Claire raises her hands in the air and shouts, “I’m so excited.” “What?” Mary Alice says choking on her punch. “You’re going to be a grandma. With Astrid, that’s four grandchildren!” Walter has to be behind this. His grandest magic trick ever. Mary Alice looks up toward Heaven and smirks. “You know Claire, six months ago, when I was at Jewel-Osco finding your brother a date, I was thinking it would be nice to be an instant grandma. I do believe I’ll like it.” She proudly lifts her head thinking about the great adventures she will have with her new grandchildren. Back inside, everyone surrounds the dining room table. 70th birthday are on a red shoeshaped cake with edible sugar decorations of magician hats and capes. In white buttercream: The Marvelous Mary Alice. She and her husband were a good magic act back then. But now, it is time for a new adventure. She winks at Harry standing behind her friends and family, letting them take center stage to watch. Claire leans against the wall next to David. Larry has one hand around each of his girls, Tabby Jo and Astrid. She believes she can spot the first smile emerging from her new, feisty teenage granddaughter. Her children have found love and now she would be a grandma four times over. “Make a wish, Ma,” Larry chants. For so long, she felt lost without Walter. Saddened by her daughter’s estrangement. Worried about Larry being alone. But over the past six months, Mary Alice has learned new sayings to add to her life.

Although people are different, most want the same things for their families. Someone always needs you. Walter Junior has almost made it through a thunderstorm without bellowing. There is more than one way to make a family. You are never too old to find love. Blowing out the candles, she looks up: “Thank you Walter, for everything.” Debra Kollar and her husband moved to Elgin eighteen years ago, as many newlyweds do, to afford their first home. She loves the town’s determination to preserve its history, the welcoming attitude for diversity with its people and the arts, the award-winning library and all the local haunts that give Elgin a hometown feel. After the series, she hopes to expand “The Marvelous Mary Alice” into a novel.

Let your children learn what makes them happy.

Shared Values: Men at Work

The He Shed by Gary Anliker & Elgin Area Men’s Shed “Honey, what are you going to do today? Don’t you have some friends you can do something with?” Many retired men have heard comments such as these. During their working years most men are involved in various activities with co-workers, customers, or vendors. Often, they look forward to the weekend to do a few things around the house, spend some time with family, and rest up a bit. They need a little “stress relief” from the job environment.

Often, planning for retirement is more focused on financials than day-to-day living. When men leave the workplace, they realize many of their workplace connections do not share similar interests regarding use of their discretionary time. Some of those contacts are not local and will not be seen with any regularity. I wanted to spend more time with family during my working years and promised myself

I would make up for it when I wasn’t so busy. Well, now that I have more time, many of them are in their busy years. I also thought a had a lot of things I wanted to do around the house when I had more time. Well, it didn’t take very long to work through that list when I had much more time to work on them. I got a part-time job. That used up some time but didn’t really fill the voids. Of course, I was busy with family, church, and community. Like most men, I enjoyed working on projects and would often volunteer or get volunteered. Many of these did not require much involvement from others. Then I realized I wasn’t spending much time doing things with other men. But there didn’t seem to be many opportunities for this kind of activity in Elgin. Through one of the organizations I was involved with I

heard that a “Men’s Shed” was being organized in Elgin. That sounded interesting, but what is a “Men’s Shed”? Although we are all individuals with different backgrounds and life experiences, I soon found out there are some common needs that are being met via Men’s Sheds throughout the world and now, right here in Elgin. Gary Smith and Steve Knight already had the ball rolling here. It all started in Australia about 25 years ago. There are now around 2,000 Sheds worldwide. The program has only been active in the U.S. for a couple years and there are already

about 20 sheds in 8 states, with more being added. The Sheds address the concerns I have already expressed and much more. Shed membership is not restricted to retired married men. As a matter of fact, some sheds include women. Some sheds regularly have presenters to enrich the minds of the membership. Others may take a lot of outings and meet for lunches frequently. Many gather to work shoulder to shoulder on projects that benefit the local community. Although the Elgin Area Men’s Shed (EAMS) is relatively new it

has already done several community projects and is currently working on more. Since the EAMS does not yet have a permanent shed location, members have shared their garages to work on some projects, such as the recently completed planters for Southwest Area Neighbors and Downtown Neighborhood association (SWAN/DNA) and the reconstruction of garden arbor gates from the 1930’s for a widow in Hampshire. Other projects such as the construction of folding ceremonial crossover bridges for the Girls Scouts of America were done on site. In the coming weeks EAMS members will meet at Camp Dean to build camp benches for the

Girl Scouts of America. A couple members are working on the design and construction of some tabletop display stands for the Gail Borden Library. The day before Father’s Day the EAMS hosted a Pancake Breakfast. It was another opportunity for the shedders to work together and be more visible in the community. Men wearing EAMS aprons prepared and served the breakfast while other family members assisted with tickets, etc. Besides enjoying a great breakfast, attendees learned more about the Men’s Shed organization. The EAMS is planning to repeat this on an annual basis.

FEED.menshealth The Elgin Area Men’s Shed is a 501c3 corporation which gives Elgin Area seniors, primarily men, an opportunity to fight isolation by coming together with other seniors face-to-face and shoulder-to-shoulder to work on various community-based projects while building friendships and social ties among the participants. Men may not be as comfortable with social situations as most women are. The shed gathers men with a wealth of experience and knowledge to share their talents to benefit the community. Men love using their hands, creating, and building. By working together, it creates camaraderie and purpose. It gives guys a chance to be themselves, and to razz and tease each other, as men do. Their mental and physical health suffers when they do not have these opportunities. One article by the U.S. Men’s Shed Association puts it this way: Men’s Shed and Men’s Health There is a common progression in the declining health of older men; why so many die well before their wives. The progression starts with boredom, followed by isolation, loneliness, depression, reclusion, inattention to health, declining health, suicide and death. For men, isolation starts in their twenties and thirties when they leave school, start new careers, marry, have children. New commitments result in loss of contact with old friends and they fade away. This trend continues through mid-life. In senior years men retire, leaving their work friends; children grow up and leave home and remaining friends move away or begin to die. Older men often feel left out, they communicate less, stay home, be-

come inactive, and disregard their mental and physical health. Senior men need to be in the company of other men. Groups of senior men talk loudly enough to be heard, they ignore each other’s appearance, joke, razz one another, work together, communicate and form friendships. Women dominate senior public social organizations. Senior centers provide places to dance, paint, make pottery, knit and work on crafts, topics most men ignore. Many senior centers are nearly 90% women. So, where do men go? Tinkering and building are in men’s DNA. Men used to retreat to the garage or shed in the back yard for hours. Then they downsize losing the garage and shed resulting in boredom, isolation and a downward spiral. Men’s Sheds are community workshops for senior men. They provide a range of activities to work in wood, metal, leather, cooking and computers. Sheds started in Australia, the result of a conference on senior men’s health. An outcome of the conference was one Men’s Shed. Twenty years later there are over 1,000 Sheds in Australia with another 1,000 Sheds around the world. The Elgin Area Men’s Shed is the 14th in the United States. Shedders live longer, happier, healthier lives.
