Take Me 2 the Y Self-expression is arguably a basic human need. More than mere communication, it requires a medium for sharing memories, fantasies, and other ideas not bounded by words or a specific time and place. Without a medium for healthy expression, some people will meet the need to self-actualize in ways that aren’t good for themselves or their community. We feel this need no later than in our early teens. That’s the age group served by the YWCA’s Take 2 Creative Camp. “We focus on middle school and early high school,” said Korisa Madayag, Program Director. “We found they’re in that in-between stage where they’re trying to figure themselves out, and we hope we can help them in the right direction.”

“An Absolute Lad”

The eight-week summer program is focused on self-expression through a variety of digital and traditional media. The teens spend five full days a week learning to produce and publish content that they have created themselves.

“We were always looking to start a new teen program, and we looked at doing something that involves digital literacy and creativity, because obviously technology is becoming more prominent,” she said. “We started in 2017 and this will be our third summer.” Thirty teens aged 12 to 15 meet from 9am to 5pm weekdays for a fluidly structured, experiential series of projects that encourage storytelling, acting, informing, persuasion and humor. “They’ve made videos, they’ve recorded original songs, they’ve made original films, they’ve done podcasts,” Madayag said. “We say, you come with your ideas and we’ll try to find a way to do it.” A special four-page section of Take 2 content in this issue of BRAVO represents their most ambitious venture into print media so far. The facilities at the downtown Elgin YWCA include a wellequipped computer lab with advanced software, a digital network, cameras and creative

TUTOR TRAINING workspace where individuals and teams have the time and freedom to explore the creative process to a degree they can’t experience at school. Yet the grant-supported program costs only $25 for the entire session. “You see the reaction on the parents’ face when I say that,” Madayag said. “They’re like ... $25 per day? per week?” The teens hear about Take 2 at school, on social media, or from friends who were previously in the program. “We had a lot of returning students bringing friends and letting people know, this is what we do in the summer, it’s a safe place and it’s fun.” Although the program is called a camp, Madayag refers to herself as a teacher. She has a degree in digital media communications and a natural gift for leadership. Before heading up Take 2, she was an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at the Y, and during the academic year she works with children in after school programs. She uses her digital media skills to support the Y’s marketing efforts, and represents herself as an artist on her personal website.

“I strongly emphasize to my students that they have a voice and that they matter,” she wrote on her blog last year. “I strongly emphasize that their age does not matter when it comes to voicing their opinions. As long as they present their views in a respectful way and respect others’ views, then their age becomes just a number. They should not be dismissed simply because of their age. We are all entitled to our feelings and emotions.”

YOU have the POWER to change a life, become a HERO to our leaners.

As a strong advocate for creative self-expression, Madayag recognizes each person’s individuality. “Some of them say I don’t want to be a filmmaker, I don’t want to be a photographer, I don’t want to be a writer,” she admits. But meeting deadlines, choosing words, and working with others, “those are skills that they can apply in their everyday lives, whether in school, or for job applications, anything like that.” And with self-improvement comes self-respect. Besides creative projects, the group has performed volunteer service in the community, and planned and executed their own entrepreneurial programs in order to

fund their own field trips and celebrations. Naturally, media communications play a huge role in their success. “We teamed up with the summer movies at Festival Park and sold candy and popcorn,” she said. Walking around downtown Elgin to post flyers for the event, the teens were challenged to engage local businesses with mutual respect.

“The first couple weeks it was just me reeling him in, every single time,” she said. For the last project of the summer, she assigned an original movie production, including script, live action and editing. As it happened, this student had been carrying around an idea since first grade. “I never saw that kid work so hard for three weeks,” she said. “He was at the table writing, he sewed a costume, he directed it, he tried to edit it, he did everything, it was amazing.” Years later, she still reflects on the powerful influence that the creative process had on the young man’s transformation.

An artist can receive up to $1000 by applying for an individual grant. I have been putting on shows and events for over six years and have used the individual grant to help cover some of the expenses. Over the past six years, I have put on two robot themed art shows, two pin-up art shows and a themed art show called Fez Fest, and last year put on a show called Strange Imaginations and other Perplexing Wonders. MATTHEW SHEPPARD “One of things great art does is it helps to foster empathy. It’s always, regardless of the time and place, always an outcome of great art.” The words “empathy” and “outcome” occur frequently in a conversation with Matthew Sheppard, Artistic Director of the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra (EYSO). They aren’t necessarily words you’d expect to hear in a conversation about music, but in discussing the artistic direction of the EYSO, they emerge as important themes. “Teaching music often seems to mean teaching kids how to perform great concerts,” he explained, “and at EYSO we like to say that’s a byproduct of teaching great music.” Classroom teachers of any subject know this as well: training students to perform well on tests is different from constructing knowledge by nurturing critical thinkers. “When the primary focus is a slow approach to learning music and why it plays such a vital role in our human existence over millenia, it produces great music making and great concerts, but also produces more thoughtful individuals, and more engaged citizens.” That’s an example of an outcome that is specifically contemplated in the selection of repertoire for the dozens of ensembles, large and small, that make up the EYSO.

“We choose specific pieces that will help give our kids educational rewards, whether it’s a concrete set of musical skills, whether it’s knowledge and a deeper understanding of art and culture, or whether it’s a deeper understanding and recognition of their and our place in the world and in the orchestra as a community.” The English word “empathy” is fairly new to the language, but its meaning is very old: to understand the feelings of others, even if we don’t share them. The power of music to communicate emotions makes it an ideal medium with which to develop the emotional intelligence that is vital to a healthy, productive life. Experiencing empathy by connecting to the feelings of a composer “helps bridge different cultures, different visions, different perspectives.” The theme for the 2019-2020 season is “Move,” an exploration into the connection between music and human movement that examines the art of ballet and folk dance. Hundreds of youth between the ages of eight and eighteen will meet each week at the ECC Arts Center to study and rehearse, culminating in at least three concerts during the year. The intended outcome is to cultivate “thoughtful musicians who have the tools with which to engage with humanity and art.” Is it possible to achieve this with a weekly curriculum that consists of paying attention and

following instructions? “Being in an orchestra does not necessarily have to be a creative experience because you’re playing from written instructions on a page, with a bunch of other people doing the same thing, being told what to do by somebody on a big pedestal,” Sheppard quipped. “That’s where orchestral playing gets a bad rap.” But there is a way of playing that involves carefully listening and thoughtfully responding with the sound of your instrument, in a real-time humanistic communication expressed through musical ideas. “It takes attentiveness and creativity to do that,” he said. “Your ears have to be on fire all the time.” That kind of playing is characteristic of small ensembles without a conductor, like trios and quartets, in a format called chamber music.

Originally trained as music educator, Sheppard went on to study violin performance and ultimately the art of conducting. “I felt that conducting was this perfect combination of teaching and performing.” In front of a professional orchestra, he “teaches” a unified interpretation of a piece of music. Just like any other teacher, “You’re working with 95 different human beings and figuring out the way to be efficient and effective in your messaging.” With a youth orchestra, he says, “I’m teaching ensemble skills, and performative skills, and ways of engaging with the

music that leads them to performing.” And when it’s time to perform, the conductor is really just another artist with an instrument in his hands. “As a conductor, your instrument is the orchestra,” he said, “and you need to have the facility, with your hands, to create a gesture that enables the desired outcome from that gesture ... your job is to create engagement with, and buy-in into the ideas that you are expressing in and about this piece at this time, with as few words and as clear gestures as you could make.” Instrumental music instruc-

tion is a luxury for many families, but it’s necessity for a society. In addition to nurturing the better parts of human nature, it’s the means by which we stay connected to people and places that span across many miles and many years. “A curator for a museum doesn’t just take care of old things, they also cultivate the new,” Sheppard reasoned. “It’s like that for the orchestra as well, in that we have the responsibility to look at this great history of literature that has been crafted for orchestras, and the obligation to constantly be searching for new music that has value to our students and to humanity, so we don’t lose them.” As the EYSO enters its 44th season, Matthew Sheppard will be entrusted with the vision for an organization that aims to “educate the whole musician,” but his direction can ultimately influence an entire community, including audiences interested in experiencing empathy through listening to a great musical performance. —JP

“My role as a conductor is to create that type of rewarding, enriching, chamber music-like experience ... fostering an environment in which all of these individual creative bursts can be woven together ...”

Mpulse for August

Ntroducing Mpulse Every month in these pages we tell you about dozens of incredible arts experiences happening within a few miles of your home in the Elgin area. Some of the theatre companies and musical groups have been around for decades and some of them just popped up. The volume and variety never ceases to amaze. But there are still more creative forces at work around us and inside us, and they are also happening every week of every month in the studios, halls, conference rooms and storefronts of Elgin. It’s the collective work of artist development, which eventually matures and becomes the visual art, dance, theatre, literature and music that fills our galleries, pages and performance spaces. So we are attempting to devote some paper and ink just to these artist development opportunities that dare us to try a new form of expression (or become better at one) at a workshop, audition, critique group, master class, lecture, open studio or other place where artists practice. We’ll call it Mpulse. (M is for Marquee.) For this section, we invite your announcements for all manner of artist education, development and advancement opportunities like those listed above. We will also move all calendar events from the FEED that were previously coded “Creativity” to our special Mpulse FEED, set aside just for our readers seeking to channel more energy into the Arts, whether it’s a pastime or a passion.

Side Street Studio Arts The artist educators at Side Street Studio Arts (SSSA) offer programs year round for all ages, in a wide range of visual arts media. Classes and meetups

are held in a nicely equipped art studio and most materials are furnished. For a list of current opportunities, check out the Fall Catalog on pages 15-16 in this issue of BRAVO. Artist Internship Program This ten-hour/week professional practice program is designed to find and explore different entrepreneurship and artistic methods. Interns create CVs, biographies, exhibit/production proposals, artist statements/personal narratives, and statements of purpose, learning the unique content and purposes of each. An exhibition or production will be created from an ongoing archive of the artist’s work. With the guidance of Side Street Studio Arts’ Directors, artists will explore best practices for managing, editing, and installing work. Artist-Internships are open to artists of all media and are highly individualized to ensure that each artist grows in the skills necessary for their particular practice and future goals. See below for application information. Arts Administration Interns The brand new Arts Administration Internship Program at Side Street Studio Arts will provide hands-on immersion in the daily operations of a growing arts organization in downtown Elgin. Interns will work closely with SSSA staff to have a rare opportunity to be immersed in many types of projects and work experiences, including event production, arts education, non-profit business management, and much more. These positions are best suited for those interested in exploring arts education, gallery management, per-

formance/exhibition production, arts administration, or nonprofit management careers. Interns will work both on and off-site for a minimum of 10 hours a week for 6 to 12 months,. This internship is flexible and can be scheduled to accommodate other commitments and varying time frames. A $500-$1000 stipend is provided, as well as additional opportunities to earn money through teaching and/or other arts exhibitions and performance opportunities. See below for application information. Artist-in-Residence Program Side Street Studio Arts’ Artist-in-Residence program fosters the work environment, mentorship, and self-promotion skills needed for an artist with an existing body of work to realize a project or idea as an exhibition, show, or complete piece. Artist residencies are focused on individualized attention and flexibility. Designed ad hoc for each individual artist, residences range from several weeks to one year and include studio time to work in Side Street’s gallery space, individualized mentorship with artists in the Chicago area, instruction in self-promotion and portfolio development, and hands-on experience in arts administration. Artists in Residence are immersed in Side Street’s artist community by volunteering for gallery events, leading workshops and classes, and making connections with Side Street’s extensive artist network. Application Information To be considered for any of the above opportunities, you will typically need to submit a resume/CV, samples of your work, an artist statement, and a proposal for your internship or residency experience. Complete details on each of these applications is found online at sidestreetstudioarts. org, under links for Education or Jobs.

After having a fretless guitar made he grew to love the sound and the challenge of the uncharted territory. TAKE 2 creative camp I learn new things everyday in Take 2, like how to film and edit a video. - Ingrid

A Take 2 Camper Perspective Welcome to Take 2 Looks. In this article, I will talk about the Take 2 Creative Camp. I’ve spent five weeks at Take 2 and I feel a part of a big family. My first week at Take 2, you could say, I was shy, but I was simply examining my new surroundings. When I’m new somewhere, I like to spend the week or however long I get to find my way around and see how everyone operates before diving into things. During that first week of examining my surroundings, Ms. Korisa noticed me in the computer lab. She pulled up a chair and sat next to me and asked me some questions like how was I liking camp, what school do I attend and the usual questions when you’re new somewhere. As we were talking, I told her about me trying to get an understanding of Take 2 and she took an interest in it. That’s one of the things I love about the Take 2 staff, they take an interest in us every chance they get. The next day I came to camp, Ms. Korisa had an idea to turn this examining into a podcast for my personal project. I loved that idea. Soon after I grabbed a notebook and a pen and started writing. So stay tune, there’s more to come with my podcast, “Take 2 Looks.” — Aromelle

Take 2 made me more social and appreciate what I have. - Ian

I love how I can be open about my passion for drawing. - Kaitlyn

What I like in the Take 2 program is when I get to edit. - Angel

The Recycle Song

Through My Eyes

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (4x)

Immigration is when someone is deciding to live in a foreign country. Not because they want to, because they need to. Immigrants come from all around the world such as Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, etc. They come with the hope of finding a better life for themselves and their family.

Plastic Bottle Paper Cardboard Metals Glass Yeah

Illinois is one of the top ten states impacted with immigrants. The reasons families come to the United States is because they want a better future, they have been threatened with death, and also their hometown economy issues. Recently the main issue in the United States are the immigrants. Take in mind not all immigrants are what our president says they are, such as rapists, drug dealers, murderers, etc. Most immigrants are hard workers, working from early in the morning till late at night, having the responsibility to put food on the table and roof over not just their heads but their family. Kids from all ages brought to the United states without knowing the consequences just hoping everything’s going to be better. Believe it or not most of the teen immigrants work and attend school daily and end their school year on a good note, with a high school diploma, and still decide to go to college and be someone in life. These people that are working 24/7 are being called aliens, being told to go back to their country, and being blamed for stealing jobs, are a big part of the United States. So then if they are kicked out of this country, there’s no point of calling it a country because the population of people will decrease so much that it won’t be valid to call it a country anymore.

R is for reuse E is for evolution C is for convert Y is for you C is for cleaning L is for landfill E is for environment Laniyah: This is a verse you can’t repeat

Nowadays immigrant families are being separated by a wall. Over the past weeks, immigration officials have separated hundreds of families. There has been over 2,000 children separated from their parents who are being held in a facility alone with no activities, no food and no clean clothes. While most of those detained are men, the number and treatment of children in these detention centers garnered national attention. The families that are in the United States are in fear of leaving their home and not being able to go back, families in fear of getting a call saying that their family member has been captured, and most of all children coming home from school seeing their parents being detained in front of their eyes.

Kemori: This is a verse you can’t repeat You already know we’re spittin heat Just like that gonna drop the beat Plastic Bottle Paper Cardboard Metals Glass Yeah Laniyah & Kemori: Okay Yeah Just dropped the heat Reduce ... reuse ... recycle That’s what we mean Plastic Bottle Paper Cardboard Metals Glass Yeah — Kemori & Laniyah ft. Ms. K

Why did you want to write a recycle song? Laniyah: Our song is called The Recycle Song and the reason we picked this song is because people leave their trash on the grass and sidewalk. So, I think that if they hear my song that they will help the Earth be better. Kemori: I feel like we should just have a way to reach out to everybody, without lecturing them and going on and on about the same thing. It’s just a way to reach out.

A girl at the age of five, sees her father be detained and taken from her househould withing knowing what’s going on; wonders why a hardworking man that always looked out for his family that’s done nothing wrong but put food on the table for his wife and two kids be taken away for trying to give his kids a better life than he had. This little girl sat by the window waiting for her father to come home. She had to wake up every morning at 5am, get her and her little brother ready for school while her mom went to work early in the morning to keep that roof over their head. After months, her father came back with a process pending. That little girl isn’t so little anymore, but still has the fear of being taken away from her father once again. Her father has that same case pending, just hoping he won’t be separated from his loved ones. I am that little girl. Till this day I go to school and receive grades of A’s and B’s to show my parents that them leaving their home was worth it. When I grow up I want to be an Immigration Lawyer to help families like mine stay together and not go through what I went through. I’m 14, asking you to make the Elgin community a safe and caring place for all kinds of people. For families like mine that are reading this, tomorrow is not promised and if you never thought you would get this far, congratulations: here you are. I have never denied my background or my culture and never will. My brown skin, our food, the language — it’s all so beautiful. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I’m proud to say I’m a Mexican with a future ahead. — Take 2 Camper

MIx3D P3rsona1iti3s I been feeling some type of way at the end of the day, I lowkey been afraid, I even been lying to yo face, I’m not even gone lie for my sake, but I love you Bae, don’t go leaving me after the choices I made, people love to hate, they don’t wanna see you as my Bae, but you choose the way Because I got mixed personalities just like a melody, feeling different things like diversity Plz me plz me, Baby don’t leave me, leave me, I want what I been wishing, wishing I been disbelieving, just look at my treatments, people always gonna hate, that is their choice at the end of the day, but I ain’t gone let that get in my way, I miss you seeing you everyday, but sometime I don’t wanna see your face, sometimes I get stuck on the streets chasing the bag and leaving my team, everybody make mistakes, but it’s really about the choices you made, just look at my face, look at my tears go down at a certain pace, just wait and give me a break. I can’t see...cause I’m blind...Pause I don’t know why...why you cry...was it because of that lie or maybe that one time...alright here we go, I knocked on yo doe (“door”). It was around foe (“four”) you asked for my number...Then I handed you my phone, I was dancing then I hit the woah...hold on wait...we even listened to songs, you even had me in my feelings, I was playing sports and you were cheering, so many times, I stabbed you in your back, but hopefully you can take me back, I’m working, the pain sucks, especially without trust, being there alone, especially without a hug...and a little bit of love. — Terrell

August 2019 Mary Lai Singer-songwriter Mary Lai has performed for hundreds of venues since she was a teenager, both as a solo artist and as a lead singer for several bands and acoustic groups. As a teen and an avid believer that there is a song for every occasion, she carried her guitar with her almost everywhere and was affectionately nicknamed “the girl with the big geetar” by kids at her church. Covering folk, rock, country, and pop, Lai delivers fresh renditions of familiar songs, as well as memorable originals, with passionate vocals and guitar. Fans have compared her vocal style to that of Eva Cassidy, Joni Mitchell, Trisha Yearwood, Linda Ronstadt, and Amy Grant. 1.30p-3.30p, Art & Soul on the Fox, Riverside Drive elginartandsoul.com. revitalization. NeighborWorks Day is a project of the Downtown Elgin Neighborhood Outreach committee which is made up of leaders from the GPA, NENA, SWAN, NWNA neighborhood groups. Our goal is to utilize this annual project to reach out into the neighborhoods surrounding our downtown, help people in need, positively impact maintenance conditions for mutual benefit and build relationships in our community. This year we partner with the City of Elgin, Elgin Community Network and Davey Tree Service to focus on 6 properties in the Watch Factory Neighborhood. Volunteers are needed to help perform simple tasks such as digging, weeding, planting, painting, trimming trees, etc. Volunteers will meet at the Fire Barn on St. Charles street between 7:30am-8:30am on the day of the event to check in, sign a waiver, and enjoy breakfast before heading out to worksites. Ice Derby Returns to Elgin In the spirit of 1960’s revivalism that has captured the popular imagination in America in 2019, a local business is sponsoring a relaunch of the Elgin Lady Blades, a women’s ice derby team that skated for 17 seasons from 1968 to 1985. “Ice derby was a huge part of the entertainment offerings in Elgin during the 70’s,” said Bryan Lerbs, Vice President of Communications at Troffer International, the lighting manufacturer based in Gilberts. “We felt the time was right to bring this sport to a new generation.” With rules and match play nearly identical to roller derby, ice derby consists of two teams of five, each attempting to score by sending one skater around the track to pass the opposing team. Both versions of the game were among the first and most watched contact sports played by women. “The original Lady Blades were an amateur club who competed with other area clubs on Sunday nights at Santa’s Village,” explained local sports historian George Boerner. “The matches became so popular that the Rink-A-Rena built spectator seating into their brand new facility in the hopes of attracting the league.” The Lady Blades became charter members of the Glacial Plains League in 1971, along with seven other ice derby clubs hailing from the northwest suburbs and as far away as McHenry. Once they organized as a business, the club negotiated a contract to move their matches to Friday nights at the Rink-A-Rena, where they were provided with space for a private locker room and small office. To attract audiences, the rink expanded their food and beverage concessions to include beer and pizza.

skate backwards on the ice.” The Elgin Lady Blades will compete at the Sanfillippo Ice Center (SIC) for a 12-week summer season starting in 2020. Summer is ordinarily a slow period for the SIC, as the Elgin Ravens youth hockey program concludes in April, and competitive figure skaters reduce their training schedule. While there is no organized league yet, the Blades will compete regionally with the Bay View (WI) Bombers, the Appleton (WI) Wreckers, the Macomb (IL) Tempest and the Cedar Rapids (IA) Clippers. “We are hoping to recreate the excitement of the original Lady Blades, when Katrin Olesen led the league,” said Lerbs. Norwegian-born Olesen stood five inches taller than any other skater in the area at the time, and was trained as an Olympic athlete. After an aggressive display of showmanship during a match with the Orland Eagles, she was banned from the Glacial Plains League in 1978. After Olesen’s departure, the Blades lost fans each year until they dissolved in 1985. The Rink-A-Rena was sold to a Michigan company and neglected, eventually losing its liquor license after a series of underage drinking violations. The rink attempted a comeback in 1993 with a radio marketing campaign that dubbed its own words over the music of “La Macarena.” The jingles were shut down by lawyers from RCA Records and the Rink-ARena closed in 1994. “We’re creating a real buzz around the new Lady Blades,” said Lerbs. “Check out our videos on YouTube with hash tag #SmoothAsIce.” For more information, go to elginladyblades.com.

“We used to see the Lady Blades all the time when I was in Cub Scouts,” said east sider John Marston. “That was the one outing that all the dads would show up for.” The Blades had ten women on their roster plus a part-time team manager during their semi-professional existence. Star skater Katrin Olesen led the team to championships in 1974, 1976 and 1977. “It was an exciting time for Elgin,” said Boerner. “Ice derby is much more exciting to watch than roller derby because they can

ALL PIZZAS HALF OFF

Mary Alice snatches her vintage one-piece from the box at the top of the closet. It is a pricey knockoff of Marilyn Monroe’s white swimsuit every girl coveted in the 1950s. She had purchased it for her girlfriend’s splash party many years ago; that turned out to be nothing more than a celebratory group dunk in the Fox River.

She surveys herself in the oval standing mirror. The swimsuit fit her 69-year-old body perfectly. “Take that, Marilyn Monroe.” She glances at her behind and raises her head toward Heaven. “Yep, I still got it, Walter.” Delilah Delacroix, her best friend since Elgin High School, insisted they ride in style in her new pink 1959 Cadillac Eldorado convertible down Douglas Avenue to The Centre of Elgin. Her reasoning for the extravagant purchase: “If a man with a midlife crisis can buy a convertible, so can a 70-year-old woman with money to spend.”

“We have thirty minutes to waste. Let’s take this baby cruising.” Mary Alice vetoes Delilah. “We most certainly will not.” If there is anyone who can overrule Mary Alice, it’s Delilah. On Kimball, she pulls up next to a Mercedes with its window open. “Hey, handsome,” she yells. The middle-aged man looks more afraid than intrigued.

Mary Alice shrinks in the passenger’s seat. “What are you doing?” “Looking for a new husband. If our president can keep up with a 49-year-old, so can I.” She steps on the gas and yells to the man, “To women’s liberation!” As they pull into The Centre’s parking garage, Mary Alice says, “You know Delilah, it’s no surprise you’ve had five husbands.” Twenty minutes later, they enter the swimming pool area: Delilah in a strapless palm tree print suit, Eunice in a modest black swim dress, Trudy sporting an athletic racerback and lastly, Mary Alice, in her white Marilyn Monroe halter top suit—all strutting like teenagers. A man gathers two foam dumbbells from the pool equipment closet and stops in front of Mary Alice. “Nobody told me pin-up beauties were coming to class.” Short, balding and legs skinnier than Mary Alice, the man does not sway her. The tight Speedo brief he is wearing is not particularly charming either. “Who are you talking to?” “Why you, Doll.” “Hey, Harry.” Delilah winks and jumps into the deep end. Trudy whispers, “He moved here a month ago and has been asking everyone in class: ‘Who’s the angel doing yardwork every morning when I take my walk down Douglas Avenue?’ That would be you, sweetie.” “This is a setup?” She should have known, no one in their right mind would pick water aerobics as their chosen adventure day. Mary Alice huffs as she quickly descends the pool ladder.

The instructor charges in and turns on “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” by the Andrews Sisters. “Warm up time. On my count lift those arms high!”

Mary Alice swims away, placing a person between them. After a few leg stretches, Harry is next to her again.

Mary Alice bobs like a buoy in the deep end with a flotation belt cinched around her waist. Trudy and Eunice wisely chose the shallow end. Delilah is ten feet in front of her, easily staying afloat with the good fortune of two bountiful floatation devices, a gift from her third husband, the plastic surgeon. Mary Alice is not blessed in that department and struggles to stay above water.

“In a pool?” he asks. “Can that happen?”

Harry doggy paddles over. “Let me help you, Doll.” He grabs the strap from her flotation belt and tug boats her to the side.

“Are you following me?”

“What do you want?” “Your number, for starters. Later, maybe the whole kit and caboodle.” “Good grief. What do you think, I’m 18?” “Not a day over 30.” Mary Alice laughs outright. “Mr. Harry — whatever your last name is — I’m not 30 and I’m not one to be hoodwinked.”

She will make the girls pay for this when it is time to pick her adventure day. She braces her fingertips on the side of the pool to balance for the entire class as Harry watches her from the corner of his eye.

“Last name’s Levenstein and who’s hoodwinking you? I retired and sold my business to live with my son and his family in Elgin. I have the best grandchildren who call me Nonnino, which is Italian for Little Grandpa,” he gleamed.

The instructor starts a slow song for cooldown. “Everyone, grab the ledge and stretch your calves.”

“I know Italian,” she snaps. “I have to go.” She swims to the ladder. Walter had wanted

class really did a number on my sciatica.”

The girls join her in the locker room. “Casanova is dressed and waiting outside,” Delilah teases.

Mary Alice places her hand over Harry’s and pushes the flowers gently back toward him. “I can’t.” She tells the others, “Let’s go.”

“I can’t believe you guys did this,” Mary Alice shakes her head. “I’m married.” “Walter is gone, sweetie,” Trudy reminds her. “It has been years and there’s nothing wrong with having a gentleman friend,” Eunice adds. “You may have thirty plus years left,” Delilah argues. “Don’t you want someone to share them with?” “Not everyone wants ten husbands like you. All I wanted was Walter.” Mary Alice storms out of the locker room. “Why won’t you leave me alone, Harry?” she pleads. “I’ve seen you taking your morning walk down Douglas, Doll. You and that sexy track suit.” Mary Alice rolls her eyes and turns to leave. Harry stops her. “Sorry, I know I’m a little much, but I’ve been out of the dating game for awhile. Marjorie died when my two boys were young and …” Mary Alice watches him look down at the floor trying to find the right words. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen someone who makes my heart pitter patter.” He pulls a rolled paper towel from his gym bag pocket and unwraps three limp daffodils. “I picked these this morning when Delilah told me you were coming.” “Can we go,” Eunice says exiting the locker room. “This

As they cross the main lobby, she hears him from the pool door. “I’m going to win you over, Mary Alice Moretti. You just wait and see,” he calls after her. “It seems Romeo is persistent,” Trudy says opening the car door. “I bet Mary Alice will be dating Harry by the end of the month,” Delilah replies. “Keep dreaming.” Mary Alice pictures the three wilted daffodils and smiles. “Now for the second part of our adventure day, girls.” Delilah backs up the convertible. “I’ve heard there’s a boat show at the Schaumburg Convention Center and just maybe a sixth husband. Co-captain Delilah has a hell of a ring to it.” She hits the gas pedal and cheers, “To women’s liberation!” Mary Alice shakes her head. This will be a very long adventure day.

Debra Kollar and her husband moved to Elgin eighteen years ago, as many newlyweds do, to afford their first home. She loves the town’s determination to preserve its history, the welcoming attitude for diversity with its people and the arts, the award-winning library and all the local haunts that give Elgin a hometown feel. After the series, she hopes to expand “The Marvelous Mary Alice” into a novel.

Shared Values: Start of a New Season

The Blizzard of August by Heather Ann Martinez Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to speak with Steven Duchrow, who is the director of performing arts at Elgin Community College. The Elgin Community College Arts Center is undergoing a partial renovation this summer. The Arts Center opened in the fall of 1993 and began hosting classes in 1994. At the moment, the Arts Center lobby looks very much like it did when it was first constructed as new the elevator and bathrooms undergo several changes. During its 25 years, the Arts Center has been used by many local and out of state community groups, artists, writers, and actors to share their talents and learn new skills. If you do not feel you can play an instrument or feel you have artistic gifts, you can also volunteer at the Arts Center. Volunteers not only have the opportunity to see the performances they are ushering for but can also earn points to see performances for free at a later time. Groups can rent out

rooms or the theatre for private presentations. The group does not need to be from the Fox Valley area to utilize the space. Approximately 35,000 people attend live events each year. The Arts Center is open from 7AM11PM during the week and the renovation began in June. The Arts Center houses three art galleries, the Blizzard Theatre and several classrooms. One aspect of the Arts Center which is different from other similar venues is its space. The Arts Center is not cluttered with lots of objects. There is a lot of space to walk around in the lobby and to enter the Blizzard Theatre. The art galleries also offer exhibits that allow the observer to spend time looking at each piece of art. In addition to art classes, private music lessons are available to ECC students and community members at all skill levels. The Elgin Community College Arts Center is the only venue of its kind that has partnered its culinary arts

program with live theatrical performances. Parking is free and plentiful. There are also handicapped and wheelchair accessible doors and assistance is available for those that need it. Visitors will be pleasantly surprised by how art is done differently. Magicians and musicians may be performing in the lobby spontaneously. Visitors passing by may be invited to participate in a magic trick. It is not uncommon to see someone practicing

their lines or tuning their instruments in the lobby during the day. It’s also not uncommon to find someone sitting with a notebook on the floor and meditating on a painting in one of the galleries when classes are not in session.

those working behind the scenes, there will be some changes too. There will be a new fly system that will have motorized fly lines. This will provide more lighting and ease with changing backdrops as well as help the orchestra move in and out of the space.

This year, the public areas of the Arts Center are being freshened up. There will be new carpet in the lobby, the dressing rooms and the public bathrooms are being redone. The elevator in the lobby will be redone. There will be more energy-efficient lighting in the hallways. This will allow for more efficient use of the space, better lighting and overall maintenance of areas that are used often. Over the years, students have used the upper level hallways as a place to study, and find quiet space on campus.

The goal of the Arts Center has been to service the community and improve people’s lives. The renovations will allow for much needed lighting, better use of space and easier access for musicians and performers alike. The Elgin Community College Board of Trustees agreed with the renovation committee’s proposal to have a great looking facility for thousands of people to enjoy coming to. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony on October 10th. An open house is scheduled between 3-5 PM and a live performance is scheduled for 7PM.

Performances and events are still going on while the renovation is being completed. The Blizzard Theatre will be undergoing the majority of its renovation in August. If you would like ticketing information, the box office has been temporarily moved to Building F Room 100 during the renovation. The box office will be getting new carpet and paint. The Blizzard Theatre will have new seats, new carpet and paint for audience participants to feel comfortable in. Earlier this year, students and visitors were given an opportunity to try new chairs that were the finalists for the bid. They were asked to vote on which chair they preferred to sit in. For
