June 9, 2019 was Mike Ledbetter Day in Chicago, as proclaimed by Mayor Lori Lightfoot at the 36th Annual Chicago Blues Festival. Looking down from his home in heaven, Mike could see the crowd gathered to hear his band play a tribute. He could also see his name on bricks at the Blues Hall of Fame in Memphis, devoted fans in Europe and Asia and award-winning records, videos and accolades all over cyberspace. But before that, he belonged to Elgin. Born in circulatory distress, Mike spent his first day on Earth being transfused with the blood of generous, hard working midwestern people. They say it takes seven years for your bones to replace every corpuscle in your body; by age seven Mike got to know his own true blood: his family. “He started singing as soon as he could talk,” said Pam Ledbetter, Mike’s mom. “That’s what my daughter always said.”

Another Good Day by Margie Olszewski The first time I painted this, it was “A Good Day.” I was using a free program I found online and experimenting with painting with my computer mouse. It was quick and simply composed. I continued to work in the digital medium and, over time, my style evolved, the mouse was replaced with a stylus and tablet, I bought a better computer program and I picked up a few new techniques. Eventually I decided to re-paint this one in my newer way and it became “Another Good Day.” The sky and clouds have become a bit more realistic, but the feeling is unchanged. Still it feels like a dreamy and peaceful place where I can see for miles. More of my paintings can be found at fineartamerica.com and the Art for All website gallery, artforallelgin.com. Contact Margie at animaladdicts@yahoo.com or (847) 558-3888.

“There’s no question,” said Mike’s sister Ginger, “That kid was singing before he was talking, and performing before he could walk.” Ten years older than her brother, Ginger spent a lot of time caring for little Mike. “I would take him into my bedroom and hit the record button on the tape player, and make him sing all the music that I loved.” That included Michael Jackson, Prince, New Edition and New Kids On The Block, but there was that one time Mike recorded an Aerosmith song. “He was probably three or four years old,” Ginger remembered, “and I recorded him singing ‘Dude Looks Like a Lady.’ I took

him in my room and he would sing it for me. I used to beg him, come on Mike, I know you can do it.” It took several attempts to get the song right. “He would try, and sometimes we’d have to cut it off but we finally got it.” For an impressionable child, these experiences of careful listening and practice through repetition would become a powerful component of his artistic work ethic. “At Easter time my cousins and my aunt and my grandma would all come over to our house, and sing folk songs, and songs from my aunt’s childhood,” Ginger reminisced. “We would all sit around the table and

New parents are always camera-happy with their first child, but in Mike’s case, it was his big sister that was fascinated with documenting her precocious little brother. “We were always recording him and videotaping him,” Ginger said, “I’m pretty sure that almost everything we have of him from his youth I was videotaping.” Any musician will tell you: when the tape is rolling, there’s no place to hide. You have to get it right. It demands concentration and confidence that comes from self-discipline. Mike’s sister was that first microphone and lens that shaped him into a poised performer who was rarely nervous on stage. “He was always singing,” Pam recalls, “he was always entertaining us.” While music was his gift and his passion, it was not his only pastime. The men in Mike’s life shared their own influence as coaches and personal examples. His dad, a Marine Corps veteran, coached sports at Elgin High School (EHS) and excelled at martial arts; his uncle was also a master. Mike followed them into the physical practice that unites body, mind and soul, and learned the value of teamwork that he would later apply as an ensemble singer and a bandmate. As a freshman at EHS in 2000, it was the excellence of choirs that drew Mike into music in an organized way. He joined the EHS vocal music program and advanced quickly into its best ensembles on the strength of his pure talent. At the urging of his teacher, he reluctantly agreed to take private lessons from a professional who visited the school each week. “I remember when he started lessons,” said Scott Clausen, a choral conductor and church musican now located in Maryland. “He was incredibly enthusiastic and almost impatient in his learning. He just wanted to sing and sing, all of the big things, and he didn’t want to wait to grow into his voice. He was tenacious and very excited.”

The one thing he was not interested in was opera. Mike described the conversation with Clausen to Blues Blast magazine in a 2018 interview. “I told him, I don’t like that stuff. It’s a bunch of fat people on stage yellin’ and screamin’ in languages I don’t understand.” So he stuck to musical theatre and Tin Pan Alley material until he had the chance to hear Clausen himself sing classical music. “Seeing my voice teacher on stage singing operatic arias struck me,” he told Living Blues magazine in 2018. “He had so much expression and emotion in his voice ... He was telling a story. I got it!” The light that switched on never went off. Mike confessed, “I wanted to do that to people. I wanted them to feel the story I was telling even though they didn’t necessarily understand the words.” And he worked at it.

You could ask him anything about music, or a musician or an artist or a composer and he would be able to tell you.” “He was inspiring, no question about it,” said Clausen. “He loved to sing and he was always working. Mike sang the National Anthem at a White Sox game in 2002, and also sang it for an Illinois state athletic tournament in 2003, and the newspapers reported on it. Local clubs engaged him for recitals, and he was hired to sing on weekends at Magdalena’s restaurant on Douglas Avenue. No one singing opera in Elgin goes unnoticed by Solange Sior, the person behind Fox Valley Lyrical Productions, Soiree Lyrique, and O.P.E.R.A., a series of classical singing organizations which staged concerts and operatic programs in and around Elgin for many years. went to Europe.” Mike had long range plans for classical music training, but as he broke into professional circles, he could see the career path narrowing. Though he studied vocal performance at ECC, “school was not his thing,” his mom said, “and he wasn’t afraid to say that.”

“He wasn’t studying with me, I just recognized the talent,” Sior said. “I didn’t know his voice teacher or anybody he was working with at the time. He just showed up and knew his stuff.” While he was still in high school, Sior brought him into her performing circles to sing alongside professionals, where he excelled in solos and duets. “We sang a love duet from Faust and his French was impeccable,” she marveled. “We sang French together. I’m French, and I had to do no corrections.” Mike’s scholarship was apparent in his song choices as well. For these concerts he would often prepare lesser known and often very difficult material. “I don’t know how much his teacher was the one making him so perfect, or if he was just listening to recordings, but he would come to rehearsal ready.” He signed off his senior year with EHS choirs with the words, “Expression is the most important part of music and, for me,

a major part of life. Expression explains everything!” And he set out to become an opera singer, even “one of the greatest tenors of my generation.” Not every town in Chicagoland has an opera promoter like Solange Sior, and even in Chicago, the opportunities are limited for a community of very talented artists. “There’s a lot of singers and not a lot of work,” she admitted. “The people I knew that are from here, who are really making a living at it — they all

“I sang on many operatic stages in Chicago,” he told Living Blues, “and I did a lot of recitals in the area until I was 25 years old.” To keep his cost of living low and earn a little income, he worked at Spring Hill Mall and used public transportation. He later confided to Blues Blast, “I said [to myself], you know what? I don’t know if I’m going to be able to do this for a living. So I started to look around for other ways to be a singer.” “My husband loves B.B. King, and we went and saw B.B. King,” Pam remembered. “I still have the ticket from the Hemmens in 2004 when the three of us went to see him. B.B. was on the stage in a wooden chair, and

Elgin High and Magdalena’s restaurant: somebody heard Mike sing and recognized his rare gift for telling a story with the expressiveness of his voice. He was called out by the Kilborn Alley Blues Band, and picked up by the Nick Moss band, and the rest is history, well-documented in interviews, record albums, videos, social media and a long trail of increasingly important gigs that criss-crossed the globe. “Mike says, when he compares opera to blues, that it’s singing from your heart, whether it’s Italian or German or whatever,” Pam said. “He felt it wasn’t such a stretch.” On stage at Anthony’s jazz club (now Danny’s on Douglas). I think it really spoke to Mike.” Blues, soul and classic R & B were always on the playlist at the Ledbetter house, and Mike understood its musical language as well. As Scott Clausen put it, “He was a very intuitive musician.” “Even though I sang nothing but opera for ten years, I sang everything,” Mike said, of his time after ECC. “I wanted to see if I could sing blues, too.” In 2004, he sang at Anthony’s jazz club on Douglas Avenue with his first band, called Drrt, and started making his way to blues jams in the City. And it happened again, just as it had at

On stage at the Chicago Blues Festival in 2016, Mike was paired together with guitarist Monster Mike Welch for a musical tribute to Otis Rush, who was seated with Buddy Guy on the side of the stage. The musical chemistry was like magic, as Mike from Elgin stood tall and elegantly in a white shirt and necktie behind a music stand and sang for one of his musical idols. “It is still to this day the heaviest thing that I’ve ever done on stage.” It was a fulfillment of destiny for this opera singer who fell in love with the only musical genre named for an emotion: the blues. “He was born to be the way he was,” his sister Ginger said, as her voice cracked a little. “He just truly, truly did what he was meant to do.”

Visual art offers us a different way of seeing. Every style displays the outer (or inner) world in its treatment of light, perspective, composition, and color. Paintings, drawings and photography become a second set of retinas with which we can experience things that our eyes are unable to see by themselves. Nineteenth century newspapers and magazines, seeking to comment on current events with pictures instead of words, became the birthplace of what we now call cartoons. The high publishing frequency and printing technology of the time conspired to create the essential black line illustration style as matter of expediency, and the political subject matter lent itself to the creation of satirical characters and caricatures. In the twentieth century, the style was adapted for use in serial drawings that formed a brief narrative, becoming comic strips. With improvements in printing technology, the black line illustrative style acquired fills of flat tints of color. Comic books emerged, with more ambitious story lines, complex characters and persistent mythologies. Eventually, animators experimented with motion picture techniques, creating each frame by drawing it, instead of photographing it. The cartoon style of rendition was best suited to this medium for the same reason it was developed for print: it was fast. “The simplification of character imagery was borne out of necessity, in order to produce the hundreds of thousands of individual illustrations needed to generate the smooth animated motion we look to in polished cartoons,” explains Mike Rende of Oddball Art Labs. “There are many artists who have embraced this visual styling and pushed the boundaries.” That’s the premise behind “Cartoon Cavalcade: An Art

On the Marquee

ODDBALL ART LABS Exhibit Celebrating All Things Toony!” The artwork, the fictional worlds it depicts, and the culture of appreciation that surrounds it are all a part of the tribute to this particular class of low-brow art. “Cartoon art is drawing something we see every day in a unique or stylized way,” says Oddball’s Dave Metzger. “If you look at just background art in animation, you see a wide variety of styles. Some of these can be beautiful paintings in their own right, but drop in a character and it’s immediately transformed into a fantastical world.” Practically anyone alive today has a connection to cartoons in some way. For youngsters it may be children’s books or television; for millenials, there’s the character worlds of video games; for baby boomers, Disney, Warner Brothers and Hanna-Barbera were the titans of ‘toons; and before that, it was the funny papers. “When someone sees funny animals or anthropomorphic vehicles, it’s somehow easier to relate to them,” says Rende. “Ethnicity and age sometimes fall away when viewing the antics of an animated duck, as we can all see ourselves in his/her/ their feathers.” “An artist can create their own interpretation of the world they are creating,” adds Metzger. “It’s the viewer who will find common connections to their own experiences ... that’s the beauty of cartoons and why they make us smile.” Bugs Bunny, Family Guy and

the Pink Panther are all good for yuk, but does it belong in an art gallery? Really? Like all art, “Cartoons are really exaggerations of how we see,” says Metzger. “It can be the large ears of Prince Charles or the simple zigzag squiggle on the top of Bart Simpson’s head.” As Rende explains, “The ability to exquisitely render, in minimal lines and colors, loving

representations of the world or push beyond the boundaries into what can only be seen in dreams is what makes this art compelling, regardless of the specific medium or subject matter.” “Cartoon Cavalcade” opens Friday, July 12th at Elgin Artspace Lofts, with a reception from 6 - 10pm. A special show-closing Kids’ Day event is set for Saturday, July 27th from 10am - 3pm. It’s the seventh show for Oddball Art Labs, whose purpose is to advance the presence of the arts in the Fox Valley and Chicagoland area by hosting art shows, highlighting individual artists in social media, building relationships between business and art communities, and helping artists obtain grants and put on their own shows. Proceeds from “Cartoon Cavalcade” will benefit the Well Child Center of Elgin. For more information, go to oddballartlabs.org. —JP

Every month in these pages we tell you about dozens of incredible arts experiences happening within a few miles of your home in the Elgin area. Some of the theatre companies and musical groups have been around for decades and some of them just popped up. The volume and variety never ceases to amaze. But there are still more creative forces at work around us and inside us, and they are also happening every week of every month in the studios, halls, conference rooms and storefronts of Elgin. It’s the collective work of artist development, which eventually matures and becomes the visual art, dance, theatre, literature and music that fills our galleries, pages and performance spaces. So we are attempting to devote some paper and ink just to these artist development opportunities that dare us to try a new form of expression (or become better at one) at a workshop, audition, critique group, master class, lecture, open studio or other place where artists practice. We’ll call it Mpulse. (M is for Marquee.) For this section, we invite your announcements for all manner of artist education, development and advancement opportunities like those listed above. We will also move all calendar events from the FEED that were previously coded “Creativity” to our special Mpulse FEED, set aside just for our readers seeking to channel more energy into the Arts, whether it’s a pastime or a passion.

Did You Know... Pet Ownership is Healthy? Anderson’s Walk4Animals isn’t just another fun event hosted by Anderson Animal Shelter. It’s an event in October to celebrate pet-lovers who understand just how much better life is when you have an animal. Whether you have five pets in your home, or just love seeing your neighbor's dog at the bus stop while getting your kids off to school, research has shown that these interactions have the power to make your life better. The American Heart Association published a scientific statement in 2013 that recognized particularly dog ownership - as a factor in reducing the risk of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. Several studies done with pet-owners and non pet-owners showed that pet-owners had lower systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, mean arterial pressure and a reduced risk of high blood pressure. Researchers also found that “the other important role that pets play in human health is social support, which is one of the most powerful predictors of adoption and maintenance of behavior change, including weight loss.” At Anderson Animal Shelter, stories are consistently shared by adopters of a new found motivation to get outside and walk their dogs, leading to healthy behaviors, weight loss and a more positive emotional outlook. Anderson Animal Shelter offers several opportunities to experience and celebrate the human-animal bond. Those who know first-hand about all the positive things that come from having furry family members understand that life is better together! All are invited to Anderson's Walk4Animals in October to positively impact your health while celebrating your relationship with your pet. supported by

“Offer Never Expires” This is the latest in our series of reprints of old Elgin advertising, featuring the artwork, photographs, writing and business ideas of previous generations of Elginites. In the coming months, we’ll feature ads particularly from 1935 and 1985, when every proud local business placed an ad in a special edition of the daily newspaper honoring Elgin’s Centennial and Sesquicentennial. Vintage Elgin National Watch Company ads are from the collection of Jennifer Fukala.

Mini-Media Guide: FEED 411

How to Get Your Events Listed for FREE in The FEED Publishing and promoting all the things to do in Elgin is why we started BRAVO. We are eager to fill our pages with your events, concerts, festivals, lectures, arts happenings and more.

What We Don’t Want Commercial messages, like “$9.99 Friday Fish Fry” belong in your ad, not in the FEED. Since BRAVO is freely distributed to the general public, private events should not be listed.

Repeating Events Some kinds of events repeat regularly, like bird watching or French conversation groups. If these events are open, they are welcome in the FEED.

Basic Event Submission Visit our online event submission page and fill out the form. Fill in all your event details, along with your own contact info in case there are questions.

Automatic Submission Fortunately, we have a means of collecting events from certain kinds of schedules you post on your website or social media. If your website has a built-in calendar feature, there’s a good

chance that your scheduled event data can be accessed over the internet, in a form that’s conducive to publishing in the FEED. The technology is called RSS (Really Simple Syndication). Ask your webmaster about it. Then tell us the URL (web address) of your calendar RSS feed, and we will take it from there.

Facebook Events We can access the events you create in your Facebook account, provided they are open, public events. All we need is your Facebook ID, which is a number consisting of 10-15 digits. You can determine this number by following the tips at findmyfacebookid.com (see link below).

Google Calendar If you have a Google account, you have free access to a suite of useful tools, including a calendar that can be accessed as an RSS feed. Edit your calendar settings and make your calendar public (or share it with us). You can obtain the URL of your calendar’s RSS feed by clicking the “XML” button. Boom! Send us that URL!

FEED.links http://www.marqueemedia.net/events Fill out the form with your event title, date, time, location, phone number, short description, and price. Your name, email and phone number are also required in case we need to double-check your details! http://www.findmyfacebookid.com Go to the Facebook profile page for your business. Copy the URL (web address) shown in your browser’s location field. Go to findmyfacebookid.com and paste your profile page URL into the box at the top of the screen. Click Submit. The next screen will display your Facebook ID. Send us that number.

2019 #ExploreElgin Geocache Contest Grab your smart phone, head outside and #ExploreElgin! This month we have hidden one small, waterproof container (called a “geocache”) somewhere in the Elgin area. Its GPS coordinates are printed below. Using the map app on your smart phone, carefully enter the GPS coordinates to see the exact location of the hidden geocache, which contains a pencil and a small guest book decorated with the Explore Elgin Area logo and one letter of the alphabet. If you can find the geocache, sign the guest book and take a selfie using your smart phone, showing your smiling face and the letter on the cover of the book. If you’re the first to find (“FTF”) the geocache, you win $20.19 in geo-CA$H! Return the geocache to its hiding place for someone else to find. If you can find all five hidden geocaches ... send all five selfies to bravo@marqueemedia.net before July 31, 2019 to be entered in a drawing to win some fabulous prizes provided by Elgin area businesses.*

The Faque News

Neighbors Create Internet Alternative A group of west side Elgin neighbors have challenged the digital status quo by creating their own alternative to the Internet. The new network called the “Innernet” connects six homes whose backyards border each other on one block of Herald Street. “We were fed up with viruses and spam emails,” said Tom Zameczki, “so we created our own network that we can control ourselves.” The homes are connected by lengths of high grade copper network cabling hung from trees,

which lead to a central switch located inside a locked cabinet in Zameczki’s garage. He salvaged the used equipment after an infrastructure upgrade at a local data center where he works part time. “This network is more secure than any bank, hospital or government site because we know exactly who’s connecting to it,” he boasted. “And it’s many times faster than Comcast or AT&T. Download speeds are so fast, it’s like the data is coming from the building next door, which it is.” There is no access to the Internet from the Innernet, which means that the only content or services available are provided by the homeowners and their families. At present, there is one general purpose website, the “Innernet Home Page,” which provides basic information and entertainment. “We have everything we need here on the Innernet,” said Zameczki, “and there are no ads, pop-ups, monthly fees or anything. This is what the Internet was supposed to be like before it was ruined by greedy tech companies.”

5.7

“We call him the Father of the Innernet,” giggled Patty Lansmeier, Zameczki’s neighbor. “It’s amazing to have this network, and it’s entirely free. We decided as a group that we would never upgrade our web browsers because everything is working so well right now.” “We don’t need Google, because our users can find everything on one web page,” said neighbor Bob Eidsvold, “and we don’t need Facebook because we already know everyone.” The Innernet’s main activity is a news feed, consisting of 1-2 sentence summaries of current events, provided by the users in a posting format similar to popular social media sites. One recent news item read “The people in the blue house on the corner of Herald and Buckthorn were letting off fireworks at all hours of the night on Friday. Kept Bob awake. Police were called.” Another item read, “Taffy got skunked, keep your dogs inside.” “There’s no fake news on the Innernet,” Eidsvold chuckled. Along with search services and

social media, the main uses of the Internet are shopping and entertainment, which typically benefit from large markets and broad audiences. With approximately sixteen users, the Innernet’s offerings aren’t vast, but they may not need to be. “We have shopping,” said Zameczki. “Patty sells her greeting cards on the net, and my daughter sells her homemade jewelry. The problem with internet shopping is you can’t see the product until after you’ve paid for it. On our network, you can just go next door and take a look at exactly what you’re buying. Plus the delivery is immediate.” Streaming music and video is also available, consisting largely of home movies of pets or parties, and short clips of cable news captured on smart phones and uploaded through a home computer. Zameczki’s CD music collection was also shared on the Innernet as digital files. “Email, YouTube, Amazon ... those are all a thing of the past,” Zamezcki emphasized. “They talk about the digital revolution, well you’re looking at it.”

Among good choices, the best first pitch is a conventional 5; the batter will strike the King. The Queen is more likely as a second pitch, with a 4 in hand and a sympathetic outfield; the batter hits the three and is out with the pitcher’s 4; and the 2 on base is tagged out for a double play. Throwing the 4 instead would strike the 9, leaving the Queen wide open on the third pitch; the batter would score a triple and knock in a run. © Marquee Media

BRAVO Serial Fiction: “The Marvelous Mary Alice”

Part Five:

Mary Alice Takes A Road Trip From Hell by Deb Kollar Mary Alice spots the Buick as it turns onto Douglas from Lovell. “Antique my foot.”

Larry pushes his seat forward. “This is Tabby’s daughter, Astrid. She’s fifteen.”

She rambles down the porch in a huff, carefully balancing a cherry pie in one hand and dragging a roller suitcase with the other.

The girl rolls her eyes before sticking her earbuds in to listen to music.

The car sputters into the driveway before Larry’s new girlfriend turns off the ignition. Her son opens the passenger door. “Are you ready for our exciting road trip to Iowa, Ma?”

“You’re late and I would hardly call a drive to Dubuque exciting. Are you sure that vehicle will get us to I-90, let alone to your cousin Bianca’s wedding?” When Larry had mentioned that Tabby Jo wanted to drive them in her new car, it was based on the assumption the vehicle was in working condition. “You’ll travel in style, Ma,” he had boasted. “It’s an antique, red 1967 Buick Skylark.” Mary Alice wonders if her son needed his eyes checked. Rust-colored is not red and there’s a huge difference between a vintage car and one that looks like it came from a repossession lot. “The engine purrs like a kitten,” Larry smiles. Mary Alice raises an eyebrow. “We’ll see about that.”

The flippant teen is dressed in gothic black despite the humid summer day. Mary Alice notices the swarm of tattoos. “Larry, we need to talk.” She walks to the curb. “What is it?” “You’re not putting me in the back of a Buick with the Antichrist, are you?” “What are you talking about, Ma?” “That girl has tattoos of devils on her arms.” “They’re temporary.” “It’s a shame. Fifteen and already worshipping Satan.” “As if there’s any good age to worship Satan. No, Ma. Astrid’s going through a phase.” “Then buy her a puppy.” Mary Alice hears the Great Dane bellow through the picture window, objecting to being left behind. “On second thought, get her a gerbil.” “Just try to get along,” Larry pleads. “They’ve had difficult lives.” When they reach the tollway, the girl stares at Mary Alice’s pie. “What’s that for?” “My famous cherry pie. You should always go to an event with a gift for the hostess.”

“Well, it stinks. I’m allergic to cherries.” “Larry,” Mary Alice says loudly. “Are we there yet?” “Ma, we haven’t left the city.” She grumbles as she pulls a magazine from her purse to read about summer weddings. Mary Alice remembers her Fourth of July wedding to Walter, 50 years ago. It was in the backyard of their Victorian home, then belonging to her parents. Not having much money, she and Walter used ingenuity to plan a magnificent wedding by taking advantage of Elgin’s parade route on Douglas with fireworks later. After the nuptials, Walter drove his father’s Model T with other antique cars in the parade, while Mary Alice sat in the passenger’s seat, throwing candy to the children. Following the cookout, they went to see the fireworks. She looks up at Larry as he talks to his girlfriend. A mother can tell when her son is in love. The woman isn’t exactly what Mary Alice would pick for him, but she’s determined and resilient, and that makes up for a lot. Besides, it isn’t where you come from but what you do with what you’re given. “So, where’s Astrid’s father?” “He lives in Chicago,” Tabby Jo answers. “Yeah, more like Cook County Jail,” Astrid retorts. “I know, I made some bad calls,” Tabby Jo says. “Who needs a dad anyway?” Astrid sneers. “When I’m 18, I’m blowing this city.” “You’d be surprised. People come back to where they grew up,” Mary Alice says. The teen rolls her eyes again. “Whatever.” “I think we’ll stop and eat.” Tabby Jo pulls into a rest stop and grabs four lunches from the trunk. Mary Alice takes out a peanut butter sandwich, Cheetos, fruit cocktail and a plastic spoon.

This meal will be hell on her dentures. “It sucks, right?” Astrid says. Mary Alice joyfully says, “Why don’t we all go inside and eat? My treat.” Tabby Jo is adamant. “No, this is fine.” “Really. I can certainly afford four lunches at a truck stop.” Astrid sneers at her. “What you’re not getting is that my mom doesn’t take handouts. She barely makes enough to rent our dumpy apartment.” “Enough,” Tabby Jo snaps. “Sorry, I didn’t know.” Mary Alice realizes she has a lot to learn. “Let’s eat our lunches so we can get back on the road,” Larry suggests. Instead of getting bits of sandwich stuck to the roof of her mouth, Mary Alice chooses a second option. She takes the spoon and eats half of her pie. Back on the road, a burning rubber smell emerges from the Buick. Mary Alice sniffs. “What’s that odor?” “I think there’s a leaking gasket,” Tabby Jo answers. “Don’t you think you should get that fixed?” “Don’t worry. It’ll be fine. I get an extra pay check next month. I’ll take it in then.” Mary Alice shakes her head in frustration when the engine starts to squeal. “It doesn’t sound like an engine that purrs like a kitten, Larry. It sounds more like an angry feral cat.” She wonders how it passed the Illinois emissions test. She leans in and whispers to her son. “When we get home, we’re going to have a talk.” ••••• Four days after the scheduled return, the Buick pulls into the driveway at her home at 8 AM on July 4th. “Thank goodness Critter Sitters was able to watch Walter Junior these extra days. Go tend to your brother, Larry.” She would talk to him later about this road trip from hell.

51

Larry calls after her. “He’s not my brother. He’s a dog!” Ignoring him, she carries to the backyard the American flag and plant that she purchased the previous day on the road. The parade wouldn’t start for another hour, leaving enough time to get the perennial planted in Walter’s pollinator garden; a tradition she had started every year on their anniversary since the day they moved in. He had loved to watch bees, monarchs and humming birds from the cement bench as he drank his morning coffee. She sticks the American flag in the ground next to the plant: to honor the holiday, their anniversary and his service as a veteran. She sits on his bench, looks up to the sky, hoping Walter’s spirit is with her. “What a trip! First, the car broke down in the countryside, on the way back from the wedding. Everything was closed because of a festival, so a farmer towed the car to his farm with his John Deere tractor. Walter, he was a pig farmer! Astrid thought cherry pie smelled bad, you should have seen the way she complained about the pigs.” Mary Alice laughs. “I better go. I need to get Walter Junior ready for his first parade. I have a patriotic handkerchief to tie around his neck.” She lingers a bit picking weeds from the garden before stopping. “Happy 50th anniversary, my love,” she says. “Now, let’s go and enjoy our parade.” Debra Kollar and her husband moved to Elgin eighteen years ago, as many newlyweds do, to afford their first home. She loves the town’s determination to preserve its history, the welcoming attitude for diversity with its people and the arts, the award-winning library and all the local haunts that give Elgin a hometown feel. After the series, she hopes to expand “The Marvelous Mary Alice” into a novel.

As for the music I love, the label “dinosaur” just might fit. But I take no offense because dinosaurs lived for 200 million years vs. 200 thousand for Homo Sapiens (so far). I’ll bet that we humans won’t make the next thousand, not that I’ll be around to find out! Last week, I listened to several Billboard Top 100 Songs: The Jonas Brothers (“Sucker”), Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber (“I Don’t Care”), Ariana Grande (“Break Up with Your Girlfriend – I’m Bored”), Billie Eilish (“Bad Guy”) and Taylor Swift (“ME!”). Listening to more was pointless. I said to myself “These are talented individuals, but why is their music so unremarkable?” By unremarkable, I mean uninspiring. Homogenized and factory-made. The nomenclature “assembly-line” fits not only today’s pop music but also a segment of hip-hop and cross-over country, too. Even the music on Sirius XM’s “KIDSBOP” station has caught the virus. Where’s the rock … the roll … the swing … the soul … the blues? Everywhere, production values and lush instrumentation scrub the music of any grime. Drum machines, repetitive bass beats and orchestrated synths are today’s version of Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound.” Auto-tune strips vocals of peccadillos and individuality. Would a Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger or Bob Dylan exist today or get very far on

“The Voice”? Am I guilty of generalizing? A curmudgeon? Maybe, but there is something plaguing today’s artists. There’s a lack of awareness or desire to embrace the music and musicians of a generation or two earlier. As MC Hammer once rapped, “You Can’t Touch This.” Yes, there’s a nod to the past via sampling, but watch the acts on late-night television or (reality) talent shows. Many seem intent on avoiding anything resembling a 1-4-5 chord progression; an immortalizing guitar or bass hook; or a daring improvisational jam where musicians take chances to create something brilliantly unexpected. My tastes in music are not as limited as you might think. I enjoy moments of metal, grunge, rap and hip-hop. But even here my tastes are old school. On my Satellite XM car radio, I have presets for jazz, blues, classical and 1940s big band and swing. And yes, the latter is the music of my parents and grandparents! So here is my question: Will today’s popular music stand the test of time or have the life span of a mayfly? Where “trending now” becomes “forgotten now” 24 hours later? This is why veteran music photographer Jim Summaria and I co-authored the new book Classic Rock – Photographs from Yesterday and Today. It was our desire get the conversation restarted about the musicians and their music that inspired us — and others like us — back then and now decades later. Working on this project wasn’t part of my retirement plan. “But

The Book That Will Rock You! Classic Rock — Photographs from Yesterday and Today has over 50 five-star Amazon reviews! just as I got out, my Italian photographer-friend pulled me back in.” Thank goodness Jim did. I’ve been a devotee of rock and blues since the age of 12, when I told my parents and piano teacher that I was more interested in the Beatles and B.B. King than Brahms and Beethoven! And, after hearing Alan Price play organ on the Animals version of “House of the Rising Sun,” I was consumed with the possibilities that existed beyond an acoustic piano. Today, I’m searching for those new “wow” moments that make a generation want to interpret a song like Judy Garland or Ann Wilson, play guitar like Les Paul or Eric Clapton; play drums like Gene Krupa or John Bonham; play bass like James Jamerson or Chris Squire, or pen lyrics like Woodie Guthrie, and Bob Dylan. Feel free to pick your own examples. There are many.

I’m searching for that music that makes an entire generation protest in the streets, play records backwards for hidden messages, spend hours debating cryptic lyrics, or commiserate over the meaning of album cover artwork; “Did Paul die in a car crash?” This is who we are — a 66-year-old veteran photographer who still gets a thrill shooting and schmoozing with grateful, aging rock and rollers and a 69-year-old writer who still gets chills when he hears — for the thousandth time — Dave Davies’ grungy power chords that open the Kinks’ You Really Got Me. The following are excerpts from our interview with Chicago FM rock and roll radio legend Mitch Michaels, currently at “The River” (FM 95.9) in Aurora, IL. (continued)

MM: How did you get your start shooting rock and roll acts? JS: My lifelong passion for rock photography began as a 19-year-old armed with a Kodak Instamatic at a 1972 Rolling Stones concert. Thrilled with my first (albeit sometimes blurry) efforts, I soon invested in a 35mm camera with a zoom lens, sneaking onto the main floor of a Led Zeppelin concert and snapping professional- quality photos. One of the photos was posted at a local record shop, impressing the manager who hired this 20-year-old to be the official photographer for a major Chicago concert promoter. I’d like to give a shout-out to Rich Carlson, Larry Rosenbaum and Carl Rosenbaum of Flip Side Productions. MM: What makes your rock and roll photography special? What do you look for when shooting a person or band onstage? JS: I look for the decisive moment, the peak moment of action that captures the excitement the crowd is experiencing and the passion of the artists. Most importantly, I don’t infringe on the audience’s view or experience by blocking their sight lines or becoming a nuisance. The people came to see the band…not me. MM: In April, you were both VIP guests of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. What was that like? MP: This is a non-profit organization that takes its responsibilities seriously. They safeguard, archive, display and educate people about the music and icons that culturally touch so many people around the world. And our hosts were the consummate professionals but couldn’t have been nicer, showing us things behind the scenes that the public rarely sees. We were like kids in a candy store. JS: It was an honor to have our book become part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s permanent library and archives collection. These are resources used for education, research and the preservation of rock and roll history. MM: When writing about Jim’s subjects, what was your objective?

BRAVO

MP: We wanted our book to be entertaining and celebratory and to explain why some musicians earned their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame status while others of lesser stature should be celebrated for their singularity. Every act…every song has a fascinating story to tell. MM: What has most surprised you with the musicians you’ve shot in recent years? JS: I think they are humbler today and very approachable. Naturally there are exceptions. They enjoy being appreciated even though they are no longer on the mountaintop. Most importantly, they want their performances to give old and new fans a few hours of musical escape and nostalgia for their hard-earned ticket dollars. MM: What kind of camera do you use? JS: Today, it’s a Nikon 300S. Yesterday, it was a Canon F1. MM: Obviously, anyone just can’t bring in a camera and shoot an act up close. What is the process of getting access? JS: This is hard to answer in a few words, but I’ll boil it down to this: You need permission from the venue and they will get you permission from the artist. Obviously, if you know the artist and/ or their manager, you’ve leaped one hurdle. It’s about diplomacy, patience, reputation and relationships. MM: So many people today want to write or release a book. What are the challenges? What advice can you give? MP: For starters, the odds for a new or unknown author getting published are miniscule unless you go the vanity-press route. It took us about 11 months. We reached out to publishers who did not require agents and who fit our topics using the LMP sourcebook. Jim had originally conceived and created a coffee-table book mockup with about 250 pages, much larger photos and many more words. But publishers are thinking about production capabilities, audience, costs, volume, distribution, etc. Learn from your rejections and make adjustments to your submissions…but stick to publisher guidelines. MM: Before your book, where

Buddy Guy, 2009. Photo by Jim Summaria Classic Rock Photography.

have your photographs appeared? JS: They’ve been used by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Grammy Awards, music CD sleeves and inserts, websites, books, magazines, a Smithsonian publication, the Canadian postal service, a museum in England and music documentaries including the recent What is Classic Rock? by Daniel Sarkissian. MM: Did you find common themes researching band histories? MP: Legal issues were common. Unscrupulous managers, agents and record companies. Also, band members often had legal fights over who owned the

name when a band broke up. A name determines bookings, money and draw. Attitudes toward the music industry was another common complaint. In the midlate 1970s, the bean counters took over. It became more about packaging, marketing and categorizing acts and their music. Classic Rock – Photographs from Yesterday and Today is published by Amherst Media in Buffalo, NY. It is available at Amazon, Rediscover Records in Elgin, IL, Barbara’s Bookstores, Barnes and Noble, and other select outlets.
