Taste: Turning Over a New Leaf

Calling All Localvores For fans of farm-fresh, locally grown produce, the wait is over. After a brutal winter and a long spring masquerading as a late winter season, it is time for Elgin’s Farmers Market to return. Starting Friday, June 7th, the Market opens at the Grove Street downtown location for its second season. The hours of operation are from 3-7 PM on every Friday through the 4th of October. For those who have yet to discover Elgin’s Farmers Market, there are many a delightful surprise to discover, including affordability.

Last year the event moved from its former location in the parking lot across the street from the Gail Borden Library and set up shop on Grove Street near DuPage Court and Prairie Street. The welcoming confines of historic buildings and independent businesses gave customers a more intimate experience to enjoy the community atmosphere in a convenient setting. There were some lessons to be learned from that maiden

voyage, so the Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA) is engaging new strategies to get the word out this year. According to Christina Gonzales, DNA’s Events and Program Coordinator, there will be more signage to direct people to the Market. One demographic to capture is the “come home from work crowd,” said Gonzales. Elgin is home to three train stops, and the main station is at Chicago Street and the river. With more promotion at the rail stations, commuters will be aware of the easy access to the Market. With this in mind, Gonzales wants to see the Farmers Market turn into a “fun, nighttime” experience that will showcase downtown businesses too. Along with increased commuter promotions, the DNA purchased a billboard ad on Route 31 and will send direct mail postcards to nearby residents. A-frame signs will announce Fridays’ markets along the Fox River bike trail as well. Other forms of advertising are being

considered, and the DNA’s social media presence maintains a strong connection to the event. More good news, cites Gonzales, is that “80% of last year’s vendors are returning.” The offerings at the event are typically “80% food [and] 20% non-edibles,” said Gonzales. There are hand-crafted items for pets and their people that include home-made dog treats, soaps, and body care. All of the products are made with an eye to the organic and naturally healthy ingredients that don’t rely on chemicals to ensure a long shelf life. Likely, the products for Elgin’s Farmers Market are made the very week of the sale if not the very day. Also for sale are unique art items, such as greeting cards and paintings/prints. However, the root of a farmers market is, of course, the food.

Meet Farmers The idea of a farmers market is for the producers to sell directly to individuals. This is the way food has been purchased for thousands of years: people come to the marketplace to poke the melons, smell the cucumbers and haggle with the sellers. Although the art of haggling is not typical of American consumers, it is a method of communicating with the farmers. Sometimes, a gracious purveyor will throw in an extra zucchini or two for the regular customer. Part of the one-on-one experience is to hold a conversation with the farmers and get their thoughts on preparation ideas or what crops are coming into season. Meal planning gets simpler when the cook uses the freshest, in-season crops. So, you may ask, what’s the big deal, considering that supermarkets carry whatever anyone could want, regardless of seasons? The obvious answer is there is no substitute for eating in-season produce. Remember the moment of the first sun-kissed, warm and juicy tomato eaten in the garden directly from the

3

plant to your mouth? Its sensuality literally drips down the chin and leaves one with a feeling of having swallowed summer in one bite. Try to capture that experience in the Jewel produce aisle. In the not-so-distant past, food preservation methods were limited to canning and drying. Winter dreams were fueled by the desire to taste fresh food from the fecund months, for which there is no substitute. The dreams of summer began to take hold as folks planned the year’s garden whilst poring over seed catalogues. People had to wait for their strawberries, peas, and asparagus to arrive in late spring. Each month of the growing season brought a new harvest to savor. The season’s change is reflected in the march of the maturing vegetables and fruits: Lettuces, blueberries, broccoli, corn , tomatoes, then squashes and potatoes, apples and cherries. The harvest unfolds at a tempo only nature can command. Such a scenario may seem silly in today’s time, but ponder it ... Then, there are issues of morality tied into our food choices: Is it organic? Was it humanely raised? What about GMOs? Gluten issues? Does it contribute to global warming? The guilt list continues, ad naseum. The beauty of buying local is it clears the way to an easy conscience. In simple terms, the locally grown and produced standard is a radius of approximately 150 miles. Because we live in Elgin, we are well within the range of receiving guilt-free, insanely fresh, organic vegetables, meats, dairy and fruits.

Market Prices Whenever the word “organic” is uttered, the word “expensive” is not far behind. However, the Elgin Farmers Market partners with the Illinois food stamp program (LINK), making the healthiest food more affordable for those with low incomes. BMO/Harris Bank sponsors the program and provides matching dollars up to a maximum of $20.00 per visit. Just bring

the LINK card to the BMO tent, request the amount of $5.00, $10.00 or $20.00, and you will be given tokens to redeem for food items. The tokens are wooden “coins” that come in denominations of $1, $5, and $10. Be aware, however, that vendors cannot give change unless it’s in token form due to LINK rules, which prohibit cash transactions. Often, a vendor will give the LINK customer extra produce in lieu of token “change.” The stronger your relationships with the vendors, the more leeway they will grant you. Besides, you will want to have cash on hand for the purchase of non-food items. Every week brings new temptations: oneof-a-kind clothing, pet toys, jewelry and art. Potted herbs and flowers, recycled crafts, houseplants, and The Pampered Chef products are available at the market too. Since there are vendor options for renting space, hand-crafted items may only be available for a short time. If you see something you love, don’t wait. Buy it already! There are baked goods to die for, pies and cakes made from scratch by farm wives, sauces, flavoring mixes, authentic olive oil. Try something new: for instance, sprouted sunflower, radish and pea shoots. Suddenly, a summer salad becomes a rainbow of textures, tastes and colors. The greens are so fresh that it’s not unusual to find a little worm or insect in your bag, but fear not.

Seeing a critter in the lettuce is a sure sign the crops are organic and haven’t been fogged with dangerous pesticides. There is no way to describe the difference in taste between mass-produced and in-season, locally procured meat, eggs, cheese and produce. It is an experience that takes you back to Grandma’s garden and all the joy it brings to eat food as nature intended.

Eat and Greet The Farmers Market is a wonderful community event. Much in the way the harvest unfolds throughout the season, so do community connections. After a while, faces become familiar and conversation flows easily. Soon we come to know each other by name. Dogs and their owners stop in the street for a meet and greet. There is live music, and when Elgin’s First Fridays bash occurs, expect the unexpected. It’s not unusual to see a fire-eater, dance or art performance, so stick around for the free show! Too hungry to focus on shopping? Not an issue. A food truck comes each week and adds to the festive atmosphere, not to men-

tion the variety of restaurants along Grove Street and DuPage Court. What a great way to start the weekend! Food shopping is done, and new ideas for recipes using in-season produce crop up, as does music and entertainment. Support your local farmers, musicians and artists, and you might experience a strange warm feeling in your gut. It’s the afterglow of money wellspent, not only for your own health, but for the greater good of the community.

Second Annual Oktoberfest

In that most idealized period of 20th-century America, the Eisenhower years of the 1950s, the Pazinski family has a lot going on in their cramped Buffalo apartment. The youngest of the bunch, 12-year-old Rudy, is a smart, wise-cracking kid who’s starting to question family values and the Roman Catholic Church. When Rudy goes up against the ruler-wielding Sister Clarissa and announces that instead of being confirmed he’d rather shop around for a more “fun” religion, all hell breaks loose. Over the Tavern is a warm and hilarious look at family, growing up, and God. The show runs for three weekends, May 31 through June 16 at the Elgin Art Showcase, 164 Division street. An Unrehearsed Midsummer Night’s Dream When Shakespeare’s original company performed, they did so in the open air, under natural light in an environment fraught with distractions. Gambling, drinking, bear baiting and prostitution were available only feet away from the performance, if not in the theatres and inn yards of the time. This meant that performances had to be entertaining and fast-paced to keep the audience interested and to entice them to come and spend their money again. For this reason, the same play was not repeated every day for a long run as is common today. Shakespeare’s company presented a different play every day of

the week (Sundays excluded) and never presented the same play more than twice in two weeks. So when did the company have time to rehearse? Short answer: They didn’t. Playwrights of the time understood the environment and constraints of commercial theatre and wrote clues to the characters and stage directions into the text of a script. The spelling, the punctuation, the language and the meter all contain cues for the actors that they would give and receive in the moment on stage. The words the characters used gave the actors clues as to how they should be portrayed. Everything an actor needs to know about how to perform a role is right there in his cue script. You can witness Shakespeare’s classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream performed by the actors of Janus Theatre Company using the unrehearsed cue script technique, Saturday June 22nd at 7pm or Sunday, June 23 at 6pm in the Seigle Gallery at Elgin Artspace Lofts, 51 S. Spring Street. Admission is free!

Godspell Godspell was the first major musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden), and it took the world by storm. Led by the international hit, “Day by Day,” Godspell features a parade of beloved songs, including “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “All for the Best,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn

Back, O Man” and “By My Side.” A small group of people help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and hefty doses of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus’ life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance and love come vibrantly to life. Boasting a score with chart topping songs, a book by a visionary playwright (John-Michael Tebelak) and a feature film, Godspell is a sensation that continues to touch audiences. Children’s Theatre of Elgin is bringing this classic to the Blizzard Theatre stage at the ECC Arts Center, June 13-16th. Evening performances are at 7:30pm Thursday through Saturday, with 2pm matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $10-12, available at the ECC Box Office, 1700 Spartan Drive, Building H; or online at tickets.elgin.edu. For more information, call (847) 622-0300 or go to cteelgin.com.

Going Dutch Festival The Going Dutch (GD) Festival is a celebration of the female voice in dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts. When the dance-centric arts company Core Project founded Going Dutch nine years ago, they were looking for a title that was about singularity and individualism, as so many female choreogra-

tainability, and representation. While Going Dutch was originally developed to address the underrepresentation of female choreographers in the dance world, it expanded to include the work of self-identified female artists working in music, theater, site-specific, and visual art as well as dance.

Elgin Cultural Arts Commission

Art on the Street:

Utility Box Wrapping The Elgin Cultural Arts Commission (ECAC) launched a new program this year as part of the Public Art Plan: Utility Box Wrapping. Artists from all over the world can send in their applications to have their work printed on vinyl and heat-wrapped to one of the City of Elgin’s downtown traffic boxes. This year we had over 20 submissions from artists to wrap one of nine boxes in downtown. The ECAC selected Float, by Chicago-based artist Margie Criner, which will be wrapped on the box identified as TS9 located at the corner of Riverside Drive and Highland Avenue. The box will be wrapped this summer.

About Margie Born in Detroit in 1968, Margie Criner resides in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. Her art combines architectural and geometric forms with play. Criner’s paintings begin as abstractions of her three-dimensional sculptural work. Her background in design and woodworking enable Criner to utilize a variety of materials. She received a Bachelor of Science in Textile Design from Michigan State University

in 1991 and has exhibited her work in galleries and art centers throughout the United States. Her work will soon be at the WNDR Museum in Chicago and the Rockford Art Museum in Rockford, Illinois. You can find out more about Margie’s work by visiting her website: www.mcriner.com.

About Float The inspiration behind this piece is the geographical location of Elgin, sitting along the Fox River. The Fox River serves to connect communities. Float is informed by the notion that we are all connected. The abstraction of boat shapes used in the work is my expression of diversity and individuality. The palette is intended to offer a sense of lightness, an ease similar to what it might feel like floating on calm water. Follow our facebook page to stay up to date on all things art and watch the progress of this piece and other ECAC programs. #ExploreElgin #publicart #supportthearts #wraparoundtown

Expression: A Female Subject

Girls Drawin’ Girls Art by Christine Chang Our mission is to put a spotlight on Dundee businesses, offering fine and casual dining, unique shopping opportunities and personable professional services, to all nearby communities and our own villages.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

The one hundred years since the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment is still not enough time to fully counterbalance the weight of the preceding millenia during which men defined and controlled virtually every aspect of human society. But the feminist movement is slowly changing that history. As visual mass media flourished in the twentieth century, the inertia of western patriarchy persisted in the representation of women in film, television, advertisements, and erotica. Perhaps nowhere else was men’s idealization of feminine allure more vivid than in the artistic genre of the pinup.

Like their counterparts in other industries, women have slowly made inroads into the elite, male-dominated commercial art and animation studios that produce the images that fill our screens. In 2006, veteran The Simpsons animator Melody Severns teamed up with storyboard artist Ann Walker to create the artist collective Girls Drawin’ Girls (GDG) as a way to showcase the talents of female

illustrators, animators and artists by reclaiming the art of the pinup. (See girlsdrawingirls.com) “Historically, pinup art has been a medium in which men create images of women that they find sexy ... it’s men creating art for other men,” explained Severns in a 2014 gallery talk. “What we do here is redefine pinup art to show sexuality and femininity from our point of view, and give it a voice for ourselves.” When women draw pinups, the images communicate beauty through facial expression, gesture, costume, and context. And instead of vulnerability, the female subjects convey strength, intellect, even supernatural qualities. It’s a far more complex — and realistic — portrayal of feminine allure that transcends gender-specific archetypes and exceeds titillation.

Without going into detail, she admits she didn’t fit into the educational conventions of Taiwan — even in an art school — and that’s what launched her journey to America’s west coast, where she excelled as an illustration student at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. “San Francisco really opened up my eyes and mind. I fell in love with the beautiful city and the amazing creative vibe.”

As GDG Artist-in-Residence, local illustrator Christine Chang has been recognized for her talent and commitment to the group, and for her unique contributions to the genre of pinup art. Like the 200+ other female artists of GDG, she also serves major national clients as a creative professional, and her extensive resume includes book illustration, mobile app artwork, and the McDonald’s lunar year calendar as well as private portrait commissions. She is also a big fan of superhero and fantasy characters, and creates art for large and small comic cons around the country. She was on site at Imago Creative Studios in Elgin for Geekzcon 2.0 on March 9th. “I see myself as a Taiwanese woman artist,” she said in a recent spotlight interview. “What I do is basically who I am: I love storytelling, the beauty of women characters, pop culture and delicious Taiwanese food.”

In working with BRAVO to choose “Love is Love” for this month’s cover, she told us “Taiwan just passed the samesex marriage law [on May 17, 2019] ... I think it would be very fitting.” Her tiny home country is now the only place in Asia to support marriage equality.

Christine’s art has been featured in gallery exhibits around the world, at pop-up shows and comic cons, and the GDG website. Her online portfolio and social media posts display the wide range of styles and subject matter she works with. While pinup art is one of her chosen genres, it’s only a part of her total outlook on empowered women that is expressed in her art.

Classic Rock lives at Elgin Artspace Lofts! Veteran rock music photographer Jim Summaria debuts his original, high quality photography featured in the new book

Mpulse for June

Ntroducing Mpulse Every month in these pages we tell you about dozens of incredible arts experiences happening within a few miles of your home in the Elgin area. Some of the theatre companies and musical groups have been around for decades and some of them just popped up. The volume and variety never ceases to amaze.

So we are attempting to devote some paper and ink just to these artist development opportunities that dare us to try a new form of expression (or become better at one) at a workshop, audition, critique group, master class, lecture, open studio or other place where artists practice. We’ll call it Mpulse. (M is for Marquee.)

But there are still more creative forces at work around us and inside us, and they are also happening every week of every month in the studios, halls, conference rooms and storefronts of Elgin. It’s the collective work of artist development, which eventually matures and becomes the visual art, dance, theatre, literature and music that fills our galleries, pages and performance spaces.

For this section, we invite your announcements for all manner of artist education, development and advancement opportunities like those listed above. We will also move all calendar events from the FEED that were previously coded “Creativity” to our special Mpulse FEED, set aside just for our readers seeking to channel more energy into the Arts, whether it’s a pastime or a passion.

GINA T’AI Art in all its forms is a fertile subject for deep discussions, and the tone of those discussions can leave us feeling like art appreciation is an intensely intellectual pursuit of understanding. It can be that, but it doesn’t have to be. Concert hall music will draw large crowds, and visual art is present in all of our comfort zones whether we choose to “see” it or not. But dance is different. Contemporary dance “is ostensibly a visually jarring experience,” wrote Natalie Cenci for artsy.net in 2018, but once again, it doesn’t have to be.

“I think there is a trepidation on the part of some people to see dance because they may be nervous that they won’t get it,” said Going Dutch artist Gina T’ai. “There is no wrong experience or interpretation. I think choreographers and dancers really want people to come and see bodies in motion, to connect with their own humanity.” If we can appreciate rhythms, textures and arrangements of color in a concerto or a painting, we can appreciate the composition of movements in a dance. Sometimes, there is no distinct meaning, and there does not need to be. “Some of the dances that I love the most are the ones where I really have no idea what is going on,” said T’ai. “It’s exciting to not

have it spelled out for me. I don’t feel pressure to figure it out like a puzzle. I just let it wash over me.” Those remarks might be unexpected from a dancer, choreographer, scholar and educator with T’ai’s credentials. She has an advanced degree in the art, has trained with the American Dance Festival, danced with major companies, presented research and choreography internationally, and is on the Arts faculty at Beloit College. She will perform at the ninth annual Going Dutch festival in Elgin, June 21-23. “I once made a dance that, for me, was about feeling powerless. After the show, different audience members told me how impactful it was to see a dance about global warming, or food shortage, or natural disasters. All were right. Whatever each of them saw in that piece and related to, is right.” T’ai’s anecdote highlights the contrast between modern dance genres that emphasize expression of the inner self, and earlier traditions that were primarily concerned with story telling. The traditional forms are still being practiced by companies like Ballet 5:8, whose recent Elgin performances were original ballet adaptations of Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and C. S. Lewis’ The Great Divorce. In those large

June 2019

scale works, individual expression is channeled into character development in service of a plot narrative that comments on morality. In contrast, the short (5-15 minute) works to be featured at Going Dutch were often created for one or two dancers, and the subtext may be the length of a single sentence — or nothing at all. T’ai developed a process by which two dancers in different states could collborate by exchanging videos of individual short “movement phrases,” and later merge the individual movements and additional found material into a dance work. She calls it “Distance Dances.” “When I make work with Distance Dances, those pieces are based on movement vocabulary and have no story,” she explained. “It is about the movements and we hope that people watching will allow themselves the visceral experience of watching and feeling movements.” At press time, T’ai was collaborating with southern California dancer Jessica Kondrath on a new piece titled “Fly By The Seat of Your Pants.” In an art form which, as we’ve argued, does not demand critical interpretation, sometimes the title is an element of the work that gives the audience a lens through which to view the art. T’ai was commissioned by the Going Dutch festival to create a new piece, which she titled “I Am Not Myself These Days.” “It’s a comedic solo exploring different ways of trying to cope when going through a funk, or

when you have the blues,” she told us. “I wear a large stuffed animal head which erases facial expression, leaving all emotion to be read through the body. It’s okay to laugh. It’s okay to cry.” The movement is accompanied by a sound track of minimalist music that lets the listener know that “things in this world are a little ... off.” The dance may be addressing the inner emotional world, but it might be taken as a comment on the external world as well. “When I make work as a solo artist, even if there isn’t a narrative involved, there is a story. I create a world where complex emotions and scenarios come up. These pieces are often both humorous and sad, entertaining and also thought-provoking. The specific movements are not as important as the experience shared by the performer and audience members.” That shared experience is the object of all of the performance arts. “Generally, choreography is intended to be seen,” T’ai confirmed; exhibition is present in the creative impetus. “I love to perform and to watch others perform. The ephemerality of the experience is thrilling. I like to use humor and camp in conjunction with more serious topics like marginalization, depression, peer pressure, or politics. If someone is ready and willing to see those issues in the work, that’s great. If they see the humor and are entertained by the ridiculousness or queerness of it all ... also great.”  —JP

GOING

About GOING DUTCH Originally developed to address the underrepresentation of female choreographers in the dance world, GD grew into a multi-disciplinary arts festival, now including the work of self-identified female artists working in music, theatre, site-specific, and visual arts, as well as dance. Now in its 9th year, we are changing things up! We want our audiences up close and sharing space with the artists. All performances and exhibitions will be held in smaller, more intimate spaces. No fourth wall. No pomp.

Performances Each performance runs 90 minutes or less and is very different from one to the next. This allows you to spend some time with us, exploring different art modes, taking a chance on artists new to you, and supporting the creativity of these talented women. Some are one-woman shows, others are five different dance companies each showing one work, still others will jump from music to performance art to media. All performances may contain mature content.

Admission Get tickets at: sidestreetstudioarts.org A Festival Pass grants you entrance to all GD events for one low price: six workshops and eleven performances! Festival passes are $25 in advance, and $30 at the box office at each venue. Single day passes are $10 in advance, $12 at the box office. When you buy online, your pass can be picked up at the GD box office.

2019 #ExploreElgin Geocache Contest Grab your smart phone, head outside and #ExploreElgin! This month we have hidden one small, waterproof container (called a “geocache”) somewhere in the Elgin area. Its GPS coordinates are printed below. Using the map app on your smart phone, carefully enter the GPS coordinates to see the exact location of the hidden geocache, which contains a pencil and a small guest book decorated with the Explore Elgin Area logo and one letter of the alphabet. If you can find the geocache, sign the guest book and take a selfie using your smart phone, showing your smiling face and the letter on the cover of the book. If you’re the first to find (“FTF”) the geocache, you win $20.19 in geo-CA$H! Return the geocache to its hiding place for someone else to find. We will hide another geocache every month from March until July 2019, and add each one’s GPS coordinates to the list below. If you can find all five hidden geocaches ... send all five selfies to bravo@marqueemedia.net before July 31, 2019 to be entered in a drawing to win some fabulous prizes provided by Elgin area businesses.*

New Downtown Mural Neither Watch- Nor Fox-Themed A recently unveiled 55-foot mural on the side of a prominent downtown Elgin building has attracted unwanted criticism by area residents. Titled “Danger Hydra” by artist Draper McIlrey, the painting depicts a manatee and another water creature resembling an extinct plesiosaur swimming in a green body of water. “It looks like green beer, if you ask me,” said one trustee of a downtown church who asked not to be identified. “That monstrosity does not fit any definition of art that I know of.” The mural was commissioned by the Downtown Merchants Coalition (DMC), a group of Elgin business owners who organized in 2017 with the purpose of introducing outdoor art in the central commercial district as a means of attracting more customers to the area. After considering proposals from eleven muralists with national or international reputations, they selected McIlrey’s project because it was partially self-funded. “Painting a mural of this size costs thousands upon thousands of dollars,” explains Dawn Montalvo, chair of the DMC. “Our budget is very limited, and this project was affordable because it already had its own funding package.” McIlrey, an activist artist whose work appears in Scotland, Norway, and several cities in North America, has the financial backing of AB InBev, the Belgium-based holding company for numerous beverage brands, along with several environmental groups. All of his project expenses were paid for by his sponsors, except for local permit fees. “We’re very lucky to have Draper in Elgin,” added Montalvo. “He’s truly a world-class talent, and we expect people from throughout the world to visit Grove Avenue to see this unique piece. Our social media campaign has already reached Mexico and Europe.” Locally the reception has been mixed, with critics voicing their displeasure to the City Council, the local media and online.

“This mural has nothing to do with Elgin,” said Richard Dieblitz, the outspoken owner of Bluff City Sports. “This was done by an outsider with an agenda, whose puppet strings are being pulled by European big business and Greenpeace types. That’s not who we are.” In an email, McIlrey explained his vision for the mural as “calling attention to the endangerment of two water creatures that are from very small branches of the animal kingdom. Once they are gone, we have lost two entire animal families from the Earth.” When asked if the second animal represented the fabled Loch Ness Monster, McIlrey did not respond. The absence of a hometown focus was not known until the project was well underway. “We knew that that mural would have an environmental emphasis, which we welcomed,” said Montalvo, “and we still feel that this is a

significant work of art. People are forgetting that Draper McIlrey is first and foremost an artist, not an advertising agency or urban planner.” “That wall should have been painted with watches, foxes, cows, butter, railroads, rivers, you name it,” said Dieblitz. “Not only that, but Loch Ness is a fresh water lake, and a manatee lives in the ocean.” Below: “Danger Hydra” by Draper McIlrey

BRAVO Serial Fiction: “The Marvelous Mary Alice”

Part Four:

The Meaning of Simpatico by Deb Kollar Operation Ferocious Great Dane is a bust. And although bigger is better, it’s certainly not braver. Clearly, the dog didn’t listen at the shelter when Mary Alice whispered to him that she had a Chihuahua issue that needed fixing. The next morning, Walter Junior bypassed the neighbor’s pooch relieving himself in her side yard, as if it was a decorative fountain, and opted to lie in the shade of an oak tree for a nap instead. It has been a week since adoption day. Mary Alice has discovered there are many more dislikes than were advertised. They failed to mention that the fear of squirrels also extended to all nocturnal critters including opossums, raccoons and anything that made nightly noises. She remembers the first night, when a scared Walter Junior bellowed at 2:00 AM. Inconsolable from the horror of feral cats fighting, Mary Alice permitted the Great Dane to climb into her bed. She wanted a guard dog and instead gained a giant, gaseous sleeping mate. And they were not kidding when they said the dog did not like walks. Mary Alice is now standing on Douglas Avenue, tugging at a retractable leash with a 150-pound dog sitting on the sidewalk in defiance. At least he made it out of the driveway to the eighth sidewalk square today. It will take a year to make it around the block, but forward is good. Something is different with the neighbor’s porch. A woman sits, wedged in a white plastic chair, her arms clutching a

purse in her lap with a vintage suitcase next to her in a ready position. Her gray hair is pulled back into a tight braided bun. She faces forward, defiant and motionless. Intrigued, Mary Alice decides to use this as an opportunity for first contact. She coaxes Walter Junior to her fenced backyard, a fifteen-minute ordeal, and fetches one of her famous cherry pies from the freezer. Mary Alice climbs the two steps to the front porch and introduces herself. “Quiero volver a mi casa en México,” the woman says rapidly. Well … what is Mary Alice supposed to do with that? She reflects back to the one semester of Spanish class she had at Elgin High School in 1966, hoping to recall a familiar word or phrase. One should always be conversational. “¿Dónde está el supermercado?” Mary Alice replies. Although she cannot remember the exact meaning, she hopes it is not offensive. The woman rolls her eyes and continues to face forward. Mary Alice knocks. A petite raven-haired woman opens the door. “Hi! You must be Mrs. Moretti. I’m Sara García. Come in!” “You have a woman in her prime out here baking in the sun.” “That’s Graciela, my motherin-law. She is protesting.” “Protesting?” “She wants to go home to Michoacán in Mexico. She’ll come in when she’s hungry. Come, you

must stay for dinner. I will not accept no for an answer.” Why not? Her son is out on his blind date. She let Sara lead her to the kitchen. “Do you know your Chihuahua is relieving himself in my flower beds?” “That’s El Jefe, Graciela’s dog. He’s protesting too.” “And why are my flower beds involved in his protest?” Sara shrugs. “He’s El Jefe. He’s the boss of everyone, except for my Rosie. See? Jefe lets her do anything.” Sara points through the opened door to the backyard. Mary Alice crosses her arms and raises her eyebrows like a mother catching her child red-handed. “Well, I’ll be…” That dog refuses to take a walk, but he can jump over a 4-foot fence like he’s a horse at an equestrian event? Maybe this is why the original owner called him Horse. The saying, the grass is greener on the other side, must have been written by a dog because these two mutts surely believe it. A girl around four years old is hosting a tea party with the two dogs sitting around a kid’s table as guests. El Jefe is in a pink dress with a bib while Walter Junior is oblivious to the baby’s bonnet on his head. Both are patiently waiting for Rosie to dole out baby carrots from a Ziploc bag. “One for you Mr. Pony, one for you little Jefe and one for me.” Mary Alice hears someone chanting in the corner behind her. She turns her attention to the kitchen chair where a boy is cradling three yellow baby chicks. Sara notices. “That’s Miguel. He’ll be twelve next week.” She turns away from the pot on the stove. “He’s autistic. That means he’s special. Right, mi niño?” Mary Alice sits down by the boy. “What are you saying?” He doesn’t look up but points to each one. “Dora, Diego, El Santo.”

“Look, his markings make a little black mask.” “El Santo,” he says. A small Superman blanket is attached to Miguel’s back like a cape. “Does he like playing superheroes?”

49

Going home after dinner, Mary Alice knows she misjudged the Garcia’s. The carnitas were tasty. She’ll remember to avoid those green devils called jalapeños for the sake of her colitis.

Sara adds the final ingredients to the pot. “Doesn’t like the feeling of long sleeves. So, he has superhero cape blankets to use when he’s cold.”

“Code enforcement!” She rushes to the phone and leaves a message. “Hi, this is Mrs. Moretti of Douglas Avenue. I was incorrect about my neighbor’s having chickens.” She thinks for a moment. “They were just fluffy cats.”

Parents with special needs children must need to plan twice as much, Mary Alice surmises.

Someone knocks at the door. It is Sara and Rosie with the Great Dane.

Sara brings Mary Alice coffee. “We came here eight years ago for Miguel. A lot of us don’t come here for ourselves: we come here for our children. I ask you Mrs. Moretti, would you not do this for your children?”

“Thanks for letting me borrow Mr. Walter for a playdate,” Rosie says.

Mary Alice would do anything for Larry and Mary Claire. “Yes, I would young lady. I would indeed. And Graciela?” “My husband, Hector, is the only family left for Graciela since her husband passed. We didn’t want to leave her in Mexico. So, we found a bigger house and moved her here.” The timer rings signaling the meal is ready. “Now, it’s time to eat!” •••••

The dog collapses on the sofa, resting his head on her Bless this Home pillow. Later, Larry arrives home elated. “Ma, you did it! I had a great evening. Tabby Jo, she’s different. Who would guess you could pick up the perfect date from a Jewel-Osco?” Mary Alice smiles at her son. Today, is a day of many firsts. Her husband would be proud of her. She found someone for her son, she became friends with the neighbors and Walter Junior made it to the eighth square on the sidewalk. It seems she has been stuck in limbo since the passing of her beloved husband. Yes, forward is good. She claps and Walter Junior groggily climbs off the sofa. She and the Great Dane ascend the staircase to bed after a long day of firsts for both of them. BRAVO serial fiction presents an original short story by a local writer in a series of short sections of approximately 1000 words each. A new chapter of “The Marvelous Mary Alice” will appear each month through September 2019. To read previous chapters, go to www.marqueemedia.net/marvelousmaryalice.

Re. Bubbles by Mary Ellen Goodwill

Berkley Crowe Bubbles can result in giggles. Tiny bubbles in the wine ... Trails of bubbles from bubble wands. If the water in the saucepan is bubbling, it’s ready for the oatmeal. No particular giggles, oohs or aahs, just bubbles talkin’ at ya sayin’, “Pour in the grits, lady.” Bubbles in the bath? Oohs and aahs (and very possibly giggles). What’s the point of bubble gum if you don’t blow bubbles and make them pop? Double Bubble with its indecipherable waxy comic strips was handsdown the best buy, and once you sucked out and swallowed all the sugar, Double Bubble made for strong, resilient bubbles. An ultimate fate of the Double Bubble bubble was, of course, having it plastered on your nose by a quick acting playmate. “cauldron bubble” in Macbeth. Not good. “She has a bubbly personality,” we used to say about Sandra and, truly, Sandra was fun but the attraction to her was inevitably short lived. We say, “His temper is about to boil.” However, if we were to say, “His temper is about to bubble,” maybe it wouldn’t boil. That would be a good thing. It’s “belly up to the bar, boys” not “bubble up”. Special and most precious are rain drops hanging from pine needles on a cold, sunny day. These are NOT bubbles. These are raindrops. Big difference. I would never in my life wish them to be bubbles.

James Taylor did not sing, “Bubblin’ away what can I say / won’t you stay inside me month of May ...” Babies love spitting bubbles. They make us laugh. Some dish soaps do not bubble much. They’re advertised to be environmentally safe dish soaps; i.e. green, but they don’t bubble. When I remove my hands from the dish water, no stacks of bubbles cling there to be blown into the air above my cat. Bubbles are flights of fancy, enchanting, fleeting orbs. In their honor I suggest occasionally replacing predictable, ho-hum nouns with bubbles. See ya later and have a nice bubbles.

1. Find something

Garage bands have been an American pop culture paradigm since the 1950’s, and probably every town has a few. But the number, depth and interconnectedness of the bands in Elgin is enough to actually be called “a scene,” something few cities and hardly any suburb can create and sustain. Raw talent and some affordable music gear are prerequisites, but what keeps new bands growing in their own town is the opportunity to perform and see others perform. With the drinking age set at 21, the traditional dive bar circuit in inaccessible to teens, and most restaurant venues cater to the tastes of people over forty. All of the commercial places face the usual business imperatives, like avoiding disruption, keeping customers happy and making a profit. County fairs, barn dances and talent shows scarcely exist anymore, and busking is unpredictable and difficult for a band with drums and electric guitars. The solution is house parties. “Six years ago I hosted the first show in my mom’s base-

ment for my 21st birthday,” says C.J. Inc (pronounced “intz”), “And everyone is like, it was such a fun time let’s do it again in summer. So we threw a show in my backyard and we called it Intz-a-Palooza because my last name is Inc.” That first backyard billing featured a bunch of bands from the north end of St. Charles, the west end of Carol Stream, and the south end of Elgin: The Deathstrokes, Shaken Baby Syndrome, Rome The Ruins, Disaster Thrash, Bet the Levels, Foresight, Paint Me Red, and Strawberry Jam. There might have been beer, but it was a suburban St. Charles backyard with high school kids and moms around. It was loud, but respectful. Not all the bands survived another year, but the blueprint for a successful home-based concert did, and Intz-a-Palooza returned in 2015 with a raised stage at C.J.’s house.

MKMC (from left) Peter Brankovic, C.J. Inc, and Brandon Garlick.

Meanwhile, Elgin bands had been gathering in basements and garages to write music and rehearse, in order to compete in

the summertime Battle of the Bands (BOTB) at Side Street Studio Arts. Other than do-ityourself (DIY) home-based venues, the BOTB was the only other showcase for local bands that offered a decent sound system, a guaranteed audience, and essentially no barriers to participation for all ages. Rune the Lion won the first BOTB in 2014; in 2015, the sibling band Oceans and Oceans won the honors; in 2016 it went to Home Burial, fronted by Peter Brankovic. The energy compressed into those summer battles fueled winter house shows, where new projects were tested with varying musical personnel. The scene started to approach critical mass. Inc brought his Intz-a-Palooza to the Penny Road Pub in September 2016, one of the only venues that would work with an all-ages show. The lineup included Elliott Ross, Sincere Engineer, Beach Bunny, Oceans and Oceans, Think Easy, Shaken Baby Syndrome and Home Burial, with other local musicians in the audience. It was a

collision of bands and fans that marked the last time the Elgin music scene would book there. “C.J. was hosting the show, and the security guards were being kind of mean,” recalls Brankovic, “essentially they Beach Bunny were saying don’t have any fun. And at some point I said, we’re the last band to play, so I called everyone to start having fun, and then I fought with security and we got kicked out.” “That’s why we started the house shows,” says Brandon Garlick of Think Easy. “My friends wouldn’t come out to a bar show because they’re under 18, it’s far away, and there’s a cost at the door. So let’s get rid of the door cost and get rid of the bar. Do it in town, somewhere safe.” Garlick announced the first in his series of South Elgin house shows called The Kitchen Beatdown in December 2016 on Facebook: “Next Friday I will be opening the sanctity of my home to an amount of people I don’t even want to think about ...” But the house atmosphere brought out the better of people. “The first thing you

53

say to someone who walks in the door of a house show is please respect the house,” Garlick explains. “There’s no drugs, no alcohol and no bullshit. You come here, you watch the bands, have the time of your life, and then you go home. There was water and clean bathrooms, and no expectation of pay.” “It’s literally 250 kids in a mid-sized family home,” adds Brankovic. These projects continued and began to generate their own marketing materials, photo and video coverage, even visual art, a printed zine and a bunch of volunteers willing to spread the word and help out. In 2017 Brankovic and Garlick gave it name, which might be based on a classic video game reference: Mountain King Music Collective (MKMC). Inc’s experience became an invaluable addition to the team;

they took on a supporting role in Side Street’s annual Battle of the Bands, and soon began booking their own live music shows there, with a $5 suggested donation to get in. But the house show culture remained, with respect for the venue, respect for the bands and their fans, and no underage drinking allowed. Bands from other cities heard about the scene, and MKMC booked them into Side Street with local bands on the same bill. It created reciporical connections across the country, as the touring bands earned a few bucks from $5 donations to get them to their next stop. “There’s no budget,” admits Brankovic. “Whatever we get, we give straight to the touring bands. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been on tour with no money and not getting paid ...” “So we’re trying to build a network of our own,” adds Garlick. “People that have come through us to have a show have then helped me get somewhere else in the country and hook me up to a show. It’s all a system of favors. It’s not a lot of money. It’s art.” It was on their own

tours to Denver or Akron or Pittsburgh where the guys of MKMC learned the DIY music scene, where small time promoters use found spaces, local artists, unsigned touring bands, volunteers and cash donations to create a nexus of music, art and community. It turns out Elgin is an ideal location for this kind of movement to thrive.

Rig Time!

Before MKMC starting booking shows, “the only places a band could play were DeKalb or Chicago,” says Garlick, “and it’s very difficult to do either. In Chicago, you can’t get a venue and in DeKalb you can’t get anybody to come out because you’re an hour and a half from the city. At Side Street we’re exactly 45 minutes from both.” With 15 shows already produced in 2019, four currently scheduled and dozens more in the works, MKMC is looking to strengthen the collective with more talent and enthusiasm. “We’re working through interviews with 18 to 20 individuals who are interested in doing art, contributing, and receiving something on the back end, whether it be their own shows, or connections. Bands, photographers, they’re looking for a reason to do their art.”

5.6

“We’re learning how many different types of artists we’ve been associated with,” says Brankovic. “These people are all doing things that would totally help us out, and we have the means and platform to totally help them out.” MKMC is also a collective mind, and the guys begin and end each other’s sentences. The following quotes can’t be attributed to any single person. “Everything is like two or three connections away. How do we enable our local group of musicians to navigate all this to get to studios, to producers, to other cities. It takes a whole team that’s beyond just us to be able to contribute to this. We wanted to

give the scene in Elgin the tools for success, but we can only bring so much to the table.” “I’ve been going to locals shows since I was 13, so I’ve seen it from the beginning and when I started playing, I knew nothing. If I can get these kids in the door at 15 and I can teach them the skills that I know now, and they have those skills all the way through high school and learn it by the time they’re 18 or 19, they’ll be so much further along than me.” “Our goal from the get go was getting younger people involved because one day we’re not going to be able to deal with this anymore, we’re going to be doing our own stuff. Younger people need to be here to keep it going. We’re looking to start the cycle over ‘cause it kind of disappeared in Elgin.” “If we can keep people off the streets and have them come into shows and participate in music and start a band instead of getting pregnant or doing drugs, I think we’ve won. That’s a public justice win.” —JP
