“My daughter Joy heard about the Kindness Rock Project and thought it would be a good ‘giving back’ exercise for her boys,” says prolific rock painter Nadine Soulier. “When she told me what they were doing, I was immediately hooked. I started painting rocks and hiding them around town and I got my Elgin grandkids to join in the fun. I posted my pictures on Facebook and the response was huge. I don’t know of anyone in Elgin who was doing this project before me, but I know that it has taken off like wildfire.”

U-46 TalentFest 2019 Now in its 9th year, the U-46 TalentFest just seems to get ever more amazing. The remarkable artistic abilities of U-46 high school students will be showcased at the upcoming TalentFest 2019 that will take place at the Hemmens Cultural Center Theater on Tuesday, March 12th at 7:00 p.m. The TalentFest provides a vehicle for expression and performance that students don’t find readily in the traditional programs offered at schools. Two acts from each area high school — Bartlett High School, Elgin High School, Larkin High School, South Elgin High School, Streamwood High School and, new this year, DREAM Academy — all complete to win cash prizes. The host for the evening is Miriam Naponelli, the co-host of GreenRoom Improv who will entertain the audience with her comedic stylings between performances. The competitors — who are the top two acts from each school’s own talent show — will entertain audiences with their unique and often mind-blowing artistry during the first part of the show. The audience gets to be a big part of the action, as they vote to see which acts make it to the finals. Those acts selected by the audience then perform a completely different act for the three celebrity judges. Those judges then award the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place acts.

ANDREW GRAMS “Great music is great music, regardless of genre.” That principle is central to the thought process behind planning a season of concerts for the Elgin Symphony Orchestra (ESO), according to Music Director Andrew Grams. “When I was growing up, everybody had their own favorite radio station, and those stations played certain types of music,” he says of his youth in the suburbs of Baltimore. “One of the great things that has come about because of the digital age, where everybody has access to the widest gamut of music, is that people’s tastes are no longer as confined as they used to be.” Charged with choosing the repertoire for a major regional orchestra in a community with a long memory, combined with the historical baggage that belongs to the art form, Grams must balance artistic goals with the expectations of an established audience and the tastes of a new audience. “One of the roles for any artist, like a music director, is to set out in directions where they feel they can make the greatest impact,” he said. “What I try to do with my programming is offer as a wide a variety of music as possible in a given period of time. What I gain from that is being able to offer something for everyone.”

The Fathers of Pops Before the twentieth century, essentially all large scale orchestra concerts involved serious “art music” written during the great periods of Art: the Baroque, the Classical, the Romantic. With the invention of the phonograph, more people were exposed to musical theatre, jazz, and standards coming from Tin Pan Alley. With further help

from the wide distribution of printed sheet music and affordable pianos and guitars, music acquired a populist taste. Big city orchestras like the Boston Symphony created secondary ensembles to play this repertoire, along with lighter familiar classics, in a new format called “pops.” Over time, other orchestras incorporated popular music into their seasons by alternating pops concerts with the traditional material. “We’re going away from classifying our stuff as being either classics or pops,” Grams explained. “The idea of sequestering music just doesn’t feel right anymore.” Neither does the idea of segregating audiences into the two distinct types. “Everybody can find at least one of what we might call classics, and one of what we might call a pops concert and be interested in both.” Although the majority of financial support for any orchestra does not come from ticket sales, a listening audience that is broad as well as deep is critical. “I doubt there’s any real way to measure, in smaller time frames, how people vote with their dollars, but I assume that they do. If they like what we’re offering, they contribute to it.” Pleasing the musicians is also a factor, and there is value in the musical variety. Playing familiar classics like Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony allows the seasoned musicians to concentrate on maturing together as an ensemble to create art. “They also really appreciate when we do things that aren’t the old chestnuts,” Grams said. “A lot of the musicians are really looking forward to the Beatles program, because it’s great mu-

And they’re getting to play it.” Enlivening the variety are the appearances of some superb soloists, and Grams’ professional connections make this possible. “The music world is a very, very small world,” he admitted. “You know that concept of six degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon or whatever? In the music world, it feels more like three degrees.”

Calling the Tunes Concert hall music is still trying to shed its reputation for being stiff and predictable, and such changes can take a generation or more. Grams’ style and ease with musicians and the public has made huge difference. But a broad approach to programming is also a key to staying relevant. “The programming bit is harder for me, because there’s

so much to choose from. But actually whittling it down to fit into one year ... Being Music Director is a challenge, but it’s a fun challenge.” “I try to provide enough variety that everybody who’s involved — in the audience and on stage — can maintain a sense of refreshment,” he said. “Music has such an incredibly wide range of expressions, different artistic languages and time periods ... its beauty does not need to be contained in just one small medium or moment.” “I like to think of myself as the head coach: part cheerleader; the person who gives feedback to the players to get them to run everything better; and the one taking the pulse of the public to give them what they want, but also something they didn’t know they wanted.”   —JP

Offered in cooperation with Elgin Community College, “Dr. Kelsey,” explores how one woman blocked the use of a dangerous drug within the U.S. The one-act play is written by retired 16th Circuit Court Judge Wiley Edmonson and produced and directed by and directed by ECC Theatre professor Jeff LaRocque. This docudrama examines ethical leadership and tells the story of Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey’s fight to prevent the drug thalidomide from being authorized for use in the United States. Thalidomide was heavily marketed throughout the world and would eventually be proven to cause severe birth defects. Featuring a cast of ECC student actors, the performance will explore how the one woman’s courageous stance in the face of enormous pressure saved countless lives. 7p, ECC Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive 847.741.5660 elginchamber.com. “Offer Never Expires” This is the latest in our series of reprints of old Elgin advertising, featuring the artwork, photographs, writing and business ideas of previous generations of Elginites. In the coming months, we’ll feature ads particularly from 1935 and 1985, when every proud local business placed an ad in a special edition of the daily newspaper honoring Elgin’s Centennial and Sesquicentennial. Vintage Elgin National Watch Company ads are from the collection of Jennifer Fukala.

2019 #ExploreElgin Geocache Contest Grab your smart phone, head outside and #ExploreElgin! This month we have hidden one small, waterproof container (called a “geocache”) somewhere in the Elgin area. Its GPS coordinates are printed below. Using the map app on your smart phone, carefully enter the GPS coordinates to see the exact location of the hidden geocache, which contains a pencil and a small guest book decorated with the Explore Elgin Area logo and one letter of the alphabet. If you can find the geocache, sign the guest book and take a selfie using your smart phone, showing your smiling face and the letter on the cover of the book. If you’re the first to find (“FTF”) the geocache, you win $20.19 in geo-CA$H! Return the geocache to its hiding place for someone else to find. We will hide another geocache every month from March until July 2019, and add each one’s GPS coordinates to the list below. If you can find all five hidden geocaches ... send all five selfies to bravo@marqueemedia.net before July 31, 2019 to be entered in a drawing to win some fabulous prizes provided by Elgin area businesses.*

Fox River Tunnel Clears Hurdle The Fox River Tunnel project cleared another legal hurdle Thursday as a Kane County Judge dismissed a case brought by an environmentalist group that would have blocked the start of construction after five years of planning and study. The Fox River Intrafluvial Conservation Corp. (FRICC) was granted a preliminary injunction in November against the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and its plan to extend Illinois Route 58 westward from Dundee Avenue in Elgin to Sleepy Hollow Road through a deep tunnel dug below the Fox River. In their filed affidavit, FRICC claimed that construction of the tunnel would cause irreparable harm to the Fox River ecosystem, and that the three previous environmental impact studies were inconclusive. During the hearing before Judge Gerald Throckmorton, a witness for the plaintiff testified that traffic noise would disrupt the sleep cycle of bottom-dwelling fish species, leading to population declines. Another witness cited research showing that low level vibrations created by surface traffic adjacent to a river would cause turbidity which increases water temperature. Attorneys for IDOT produced engineering drawings and geologic data showing that the proposed tunnel would produce less noise and ground vibration than that already

The Judge dismissed a motion by FRICC for a stay of proceedings so that both parties could investigate the nature of fish sleep cycles and fish perception of sound. BRAVO Serial Fiction: “The Marvelous Mary Alice”

Part One:

Mary Alice Finds a Date at Jewel-Osco by Deb Kollar Sixty-nine-year-old Mary Alice Moretti is on the hunt. She believes there is a saying for everything in life and for this particular outing, it is “the early bird catches the worm.” Over in the bakery department, a teenage boy is restocking the shelves with St. Patrick’s Day dessert trays and Polish paczki doughnuts for Fat Tuesday. Mary Alice strolls over and pretends to be interested as she surveys the lay of the land. An attractive redhead in her mid-thirties is standing by the deli counter asking for a single-serving chicken dinner. Bingo! One can find a suitable mate in the grocery store. Mary Alice is sure of it. After all, she handpicked her husband, Walter, in a Piggly Wiggly when he was unable to tell the difference between a honeydew and a cantaloupe. Her goal is to find a date for her son, Larry. She cannot fail at her mission, especially with her grandniece’s wedding only three months away; otherwise, her spiteful sister, Eunice, will stick him at the table with the rest of the single relatives — bored teenagers and drunk Uncle Sal. No, Larry must have his plus one. Mary Alice whispers, “The target is on the move.” She realizes her husband’s lifelong penchant for military movies has clearly infiltrated her matchmaking strategies. The bewildered teenage employee next to her looks around, then back at her again. Mary Alice grabs a grocery basket and follows the redhead to the dairy aisle. Yogurt is on sale. The woman swipes the remaining lot from

the shelf. Mary Alice believes in signs, too, and considers this an indication the woman is both thrifty and health conscious. Not at all like the time she brought home Brenda from Walmart. Mary Alice makes the sign of the cross. She ought to have known Brenda was trouble. The woman’s cart had been filled with enough Hostess snack cakes to put a classroom full of children into a diabetic coma. Mary Alice is convinced women use chocolate to cover up mental issues. It took three months to chase Brenda away from her son and by the end of it, she had a new saying: never trust a woman addicted to Ho Hos. “That’s a good sale,” Mary Alice says. The woman looks her up and down. “Given your age, I suppose you’ll need me to squat down to check if there’s any yogurt left on the bottom shelf?” “Young lady, I was the wife and assistant to the famous magician, Walter Moretti. My body is strong and limber.” Mary Alice lifts her flared skirt, brings her right leg forward and points her ruby red mary jane pump. “You’re looking at the newspaper’s ‘Best Legs in Kane County 1969.’” “Watch,” says Mary Alice. She squats ladylike with her knees together, rummages around the bottom shelf, pulls out a yogurt, rises and takes a bow. “I am and will always be, The Marvelous Mary Alice.” She remembers when Walter first introduced her to the stage at the Hemmens Cultural Center in 1970. “Please give a round

of applause to my assistant— The Marvelous Mary Alice.” The sharpness of the woman’s retort brings her back to the moment. “Fine. You’re like a senior Wonder Woman.” She rolls her eyes and moves on. This redhead is trying her patience. Mary Alice is not the type to give up without a fight. Besides, it’s slim pickings at a grocery store on a Monday morning. She catches up to the woman in the frozen food aisle perusing Banquet pot pie dinners. As an Italian, she knows food is the great equalizer and nobody can pass up her Italian Sunday gravy. Mary Alice peeks her head into the freezer door and whispers, “You know, those pot pies are like butter on your thighs. How would you like a nice homecooked dinner?” The redhead slams the freezer door. “Are you following me, lady?” Mary Alice looks behind her. The aisle is empty except for the soothing voice of Karen Carpen-

ter singing “Close to You” over the store’s music system. “Excuse me?” “You were at the deli counter watching me. Now you’re here.” The woman glares at Mary Alice. “Are you stalking me?” Mary Alice laughs. “Stalking at a grocery store? Who would do such a thing?” It isn’t like she’ll follow the woman home and she certainly won’t dismember her body and store it in a freezer like that Jeffrey Dahmer fellow. “I am no stalker!” “Either you’re stalking me or you’re lonely. There are mental institutions for the first and nursing homes for the second.” Mary Alice scoffs. She points her finger into the redhead’s face. “You’ll need to say three Hail Marys for that mouth.” “You’re crazy.” As the woman pushes the cart away, she turns and shouts, “And don’t follow me!” Mary Alice waves her hand in the air. “Marone!” Another cart goes by. This time it’s a brunette with two

small children. She sighs as she contemplates the idea. It could be nice to have instant grandchildren. After checking for a wedding ring, Mary Alice sets out for the brunette. She is on the hunt again. Two hours later, Mary Alice enters the front seat of her Lincoln Continental in Jewel-Osco’s parking lot. Matchmaking in a grocery store is difficult work. It didn’t help the brunette with children threatened to call security. Lifting the rosary beads hanging from her rear-view mirror, she kisses the wooden cross. Mary Alice clutches the store receipt with the phone number in her hand. Thank goodness for the long pharmacy line. The poufy blonde had at least a twenty-minute wait to fill her prescription. It was enough time for Mary Alice to ease in and not immediately go in for the kill; however, it was surprisingly quick to persuade her. She wonders if Larry will mind a few quirks, like a misdemeanor, and an unsightly face piercing. Beggars can’t be

41

choosers — if there’s a saying for her 40-year-old son living in her basement, Mary Alice is sure this would be it. On her way home, Mary Alice makes a detour to Jefferson Avenue on the north side of Elgin. She parks across the street, turns off the engine and surveys the Sears bungalow hoping she will catch a glimpse of her through the window. Tears well up as she remembers the promises she had made to her late husband. To keep them all together. To help their children find the love they were blessed with for 45 years. Dear God, how am I going to fix this? Debra Kollar and her husband moved to Elgin eighteen years ago, as many newlyweds do, to afford their first home. She loves the town’s determination to preserve its history, the welcoming attitude for diversity with its people and the arts, the award-winning library and all the local haunts that give Elgin a hometown feel. After the series, she hopes to expand “The Marvelous Mary Alice” into a novel.

Expression: A Messy Studio is a Sign of Healthy Mind

Studio of the Mind It’s an early Saturday afternoon in February in downtown Elgin, and at least ten people and an Italian Greyhound are packed into a cluttered, one room art studio on the fourth floor of the Professional Building on Division Street. One conversation involves planning an upcoming exhibit of artwork at the Elgin Art Showcase upstairs; another conversation addresses the organization of shelves of artbooks, paintings, and supplies; another is shared among artists discussing their creative process and brainstorming compositions. This is the Awakenings Project Studio, a naturally lit, wellequipped space for artists living with mental illness to develop their craft and find an outlet for their creative abilities through art in all forms. Working alongside the artists are family, friends and allies of all kinds.

Background This arts collective began to form twenty years in DuPage county, when Robert Lundin and the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Illinois (NAMI-IL) organized an exhibit for their annual convention titled “The Awakenings Art Show.” With the help of Glen Ellyn artist Trish Evers and gallery owner Irene O’Neill, they brought together nearly fifty artists with mental illnesses for their first show in 1997. This success was repeated many times. In 1998 when a Chicago gallery misprinted the art show’s name as “The Awakenings Project,” the organizers decided to adopt it. In 2004, they became a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with headquarters in Wheaton.

“Most people with a mental illness don’t work,” Lundin told the Chicago Tribune in 2010, “so they don’t have a work identity.” And crucial to that work identity is having a place to work, where they can practice their occupation. For artists, that place is a studio. Evers started sharing her own personal studio space with the group from the beginning. When she died of cancer in June 2000, she left it in the hands of the Awakenings Project, whose network of artists, writers and musicians found space there to experience peace and healing through creativity and companionship. In addition to fine art exhibits, the group developed a successful literary journal, The Awakenings Review, and later produced a CD of music and poetry by Awakenings artists.

After eight years, the owners of the Glen Ellyn building with the high ceilings and skylights made new plans for the space, and the artists were forced to vacate on short notice. “We knew we had to find another place fairly quickly that was similarly priced,” said Irene O’Neill, now the President of the Awakenings Project. “Believe me, there was nothing else in DuPage in our price range.” Hearing the news of the Artspace project coming to Elgin, O’Neill attended a meeting in

the summer of 2008 to explore the possibility of renting a studio there, but learned the building would not be ready for another four years. Nonetheless the meeting was fruitful. “I met Sylvia Grady at that meeting, and she mentioned to me that there might be a space in the Professional Building in our price range,” O’Neill said. There was, and Awakenings moved in the following month, with an opening reception in September 2008. The reasonable rent has hardly increased in more than ten years. “We are very grateful to Elgin,” she said.

Positive Space “A really great factor about the Professional Building is that there’s a theater on the eighth floor, which often displays artwork in conjunction with the plays ... and the lobby is incredibly beautiful.” The building’s name is also a reminder that for these artists, self-expression is more than amusement — it’s work. People come from all over Chicagoland to spend time there. “The majority of people who come to the studio have some diagnosis themselves — mental illnesses, addiction issues, autism — or they accompany someone as a family member or friend,” she said. Since the studio moved to Elgin, transportation to the site has become a challenge for DuPage area artists living on very low incomes who don’t own a car. While public transporta-

Perspective As a result, the Awakenings Project Studio has sought to strengthen its connections with arts and wellness organizations in Elgin, including the Ecker Center, the Renz Center, Association for Individual Development, NAMI-Kane County North and Side Street Studio Arts. The space is open for drop-in use without a fee most Saturdays between 11am and 2pm, and materials are provided. Outside of the studio, the artists are also making a local impact at nearly every visual art venue in Elgin. They have exhibited at the Seigle Gallery at Elgin Artspace Lofts; Art Area Studio 51 Gallery; Gail Borden Public Library; Side Street Studio Arts Gallery; the Healing Gallery at Provena St. Joseph Hospital; and Art & Soul on the Fox. Last summer O’Neill met Artistic Director Katrina Syrris during rehearsals for her dramatic production “Goodly Creatures: A Review of Shakespeare’s Sonnets for Modern Times,” and they organized a show of Awakenings art in the lobby of

the Elgin Art Showcase. That partnership will continue with the upcoming run of “The Yellow Wallpaper” set for April at the Showcase. Putting up and taking down exhibits is part of the work of an artist (just ask any member of Elgin’s Art for All). And so is art education, which is why you can find the Awakenings artists at work in the community hosting writers’ groups, presenting workshops at Elgin Mental Health Center, and discussing the intersection of faith and mental health at First Congregational Church. A lot has been written by and about The Awakenings Project in its two decades of work on behalf of creative people with psychiatric disorders. They now engage artists and publish the works of writers from around the world. They partner with hospitals, corporate sponsors, and advocacy groups with international reputations to raise awareness and eliminate the social stigma of mental illness that causes these artists to be sidelined or neglected. However unlikely it seems that such a group would find its way to Elgin, it’s also a perfectly poetic story that connects the City’s past identity as home to the Elgin State Hospital with its future identity as an arts destination, all through the work of volunteers gravitating to a community that is demonstrably the most generous in Illinois. —JP
