The Turnkey Symphony by Dorothy Turay Elgin is fortunate to have a world class orchestra nestled in the heart of our city. The Hemmens Cultural Center is home to the Elgin Symphony Orchestra (ESO), which may be the most user friendly orchestra in the entire Midwest. Rather than appealing to those who are in the know about classical music, the ESO hosts an incredible array of community outreach programs. Not only are they informative, but most are free to all. These programs include the Listener’s Club, Inside the Music, Open Rehearsal, and more.

the Club and its presenter, the enthusiastic nature of Kendros will soon put a newcomer at ease. The venue at the library is casual, and given the time of the lecture, people are invited to bring a lunch.

So what, exactly, is the Listener’s Club? The LC grew from the seed of an idea planted by Wendy Evans, ESO violinist and Director of Community Engagement and Orchestra Personnel. About eight years ago, Evans contacted Kendros and described her vision for an educational experience for the community of Elgin. Kendros liked the idea, Joy in the Club and a collaboration was born. Jim Kendros leads the Wednesday afternoon Listener’s Club. Photo by Dorothy Turay. The Listener’s Club meets in the Meadows Community Room on the first floor of the GBPL. Restrooms are conveniently accessible in the hallway adjacent to it, making the meeting space easy to negotiate for those who have physical challenges. The double doors are open wide to welcome visitors. A table laden with the current “syllabus” and other information of upcoming library events and ESO material awaits the attendees. Evans is nearby to answer questions and welcome the day’s “members.” Suddenly, there is a gust of energy that infuses the room like an electric charge. Kendros has arrived with his arsenal of laptop and a lifetime’s worth of musicology. By now, the room is comfortably full, and people are chatting amicably. A thrum of anticipation builds as Kendros takes center stage, armed with microphone and laptop at the ready. Building on the audience’s energy, Kendros begins the presentation for the weekend’s concert. Following Kendros’s detailed guidelines, the audience gets a crash course in composition types (sonata, waltz, or scherzo?), the artists’ background, history, and a few fun facts. There is a short break in the two hour lecture, giving one plenty of time for a bathroom break or a coffee refill. At the end of the presentation, Kendros and Evans initiate a question and answer session. In essence, the Listener’s Club creates an educated audience for

the ESO, which in turn surprises the LC with occasional unexpected visits from Conductor Andrew Grams or guest musicians and conductors. Speaking to the enthusiasm of the LC, Kendros said, “The patrons in Elgin really passionately want to experience the music and learn more about it.” He added that Elginites have a thirst for the “educational aspect and passion that I don’t see as much in other orchestras.”

The first time he came to Elgin for a pre-concert lecture in February, 2009, Kendros recalled, “The whole feeling of the audience was something completely different than I’d ever felt. These people were very interested in knowing all about the music, and they were ... passionate, passionately interested in the music ...” He continued, “In the Elgin area, there is a real desire to know more about the music and not just listen. They want to know and to make the music their own. That is so special.” Kendros is quick to credit Evans for bringing the community and orchestra together. He calls her idea for the LC “dynamic” and continues to praise her marketing skill with innovative programs like the Instrument Petting Zoo at the GBPL. At this event, kids and their parents are encouraged to get up close and personal with various instruments and their handlers. Kendros remembers the day he brought his antique instruments

to the event and “was amazed! There were just busloads of kids!” In addition to being a presenter of musical education, Kendros plays a large variety of instruments, from keyboards to the Hurdy-Gurdy, is a composer and a radio host. Evans and Kendros host a radio show/podcast on Huntley radio station 101.5 FM, which Kendros stated is “dedicated to Elgin.”

We’re With the Band Besides the Listener’s Club, the ESO offers even more to the curious listener. There are open

rehearsals and Inside the Music, in which conductor Andrew Grams leads audience discussion and live orchestra rehearsal. Open rehearsals are free events that allow people to observe a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of a working orchestra. Through this event, the music appreciator can see the “sausage being made” and walk away with the knowledge of the exactitude, cooperation, and discipline that it takes to create the music. Although open rehearsals are free, the ESO does require reservations. Another event, Inside the

Schools of Engagement

Music, is a combination lecture by Andrew Grams, followed by the full orchestra’s performance. Much like the Leonard Bernstein programs on public television in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Grams explains the intricacies of the compositions and divulges bits of the composer’s life. Grams is a charming and energetic host with the appeal and charisma of Kendros. The lecture and performance are geared toward engaging young, aspiring artists; therefore, student tickets are just thirteen dollars. Adults may attend for a higher priced ticket. For twelve dollars, adults can participate in tasting different vodkas while listening to an informative music lecture on Russian music. Elgin is fortunate to have the ESO in the heart of downtown on the banks of the Fox River. The Hemmens, home of the ESO, is an asset to the city that beckons visitors from miles away. As a four time winner of the Illinois Professional Orchestra of the Year, the ESO has good reason to be proud of its achievements. In spite of its laurels, the ESO remains true to its root cause, which is to bring the enjoyment of music to the people.

Nick Cristano is a young Hoboken, NJ marketing executive who routinely visits his four grandparents every Sunday for dinners which are governed by the three “F’s”: family, faith, and food. One Sunday he has an exciting, though devastating announcement for his grandparents: He is being promoted to a new position in faraway Seattle, Washington. Since Nick is their only relative left in the area, the thought of losing him calls for drastic action on the part of the grandparents. The solution? Introduce him to the woman of his dreams. Culture is Calling New Public Art Programs The Elgin Cultural Arts Commission is rolling out two new public art programs for 2019: Neighborhood Public Art Grants and Utility Box Wrapping. The Neighborhood Public Art Grant program is available to all Elgin registered 501(c)3 neighborhood organizations. The program is intended to give the residents of the community a voice in determining the art in their neighborhood and to help further showcase their identity. Two awards of up to $3,250 are available for 3D projects. Applications are due May 6, 2019 at 4pm at City Hall. The ECAC will review and score applications and award recipients will be notified in June of 2019. Elgin Area Convention and Visitors Bureau

Explore Elgin This Winter by Krisilee Murphy Winter is not the time to stay home and try recipes … well, at least not every day. Winter is the perfect time to #ExploreElgin and see why visitors and residents alike love discovering new ways to enjoy the area. It does not matter if you are looking for something to test your mental skills or get your blood pumping, there is something to kick those winter blues in the Elgin Area.

Escape Room Can you work with your friends quick enough to beat the clock? Escapade 360 in downtown Elgin is located right along the Fox River Bike Trail in downtown Elgin and just steps from all kinds of restaurants. The Sherlock Adventure and The Da Vinci Experience will challenge you to the last second. When visiting Panic Escape Room in South Elgin, how you work together as a team will determine whether you make it out or not. Five rooms to choose from will keep you coming back for the adrenaline rush

Nature The Elgin Area is located along the Fox River and surrounded by forest preserves so even in the winter months visitors have the opportunity to escape to nature. The Fox River Bike Trail is perfect for walking around or pull out the bicycle with thicker tires to really fly. The trail runs for over 60 miles but a quick walk will get you from one side of downtown Elgin to the other or a little longer of a walk will get you from downtown Elgin to East Dundee. While you are enjoying the trail we recommend watching the water. You never know when one of our winter visitors in the shape of a Bald Eagle will fly by on a hunting trip. If you would like to enjoy the eagles from a warm location we highly recommend renting a pair of binoculars at Gail Borden Public Library and enjoying the view.

Flights One of the best ways to explore a menu is by the flight menu. It does not matter if you prefer wine, beer or whiskey. Bleuroot offers special flights every night of the week (except Mondays when they are closed) but we highly recommend checking it out on Tuesdays when they offer $2 off flights.

Plank Road Tap Room is known for their unique selection of American craft beers. They offer flights so people feeling adventurous can try new craft beers without having to commit to a full glass before trying a couple selections. If you are more of a martini fan then Wednesday nights at Martini Room will be right up your alley. Every month Martini Room comes up with a set flight of five mini martinis with a special theme. BOOtiful flight in October will have you thinking about Halloween and then the Aromatic Equinox flight will spark your senses. Each month is a different preset flight.

Shopping Who does not love a fun afternoon strolling the aisles of antique and boutique shops. Soulful Sparrow is a boutique shop in downtown Elgin that is perfect for picking up seasonal attires, jewelry and even home decor. The shop is located just steps away from multiple coffee shops offering hot chocolate selections and fresh baked goods to extend your afternoon. If you are looking for a fun trip down memory lane we recommend Elgin Antiques & Uniques just a short walk from Soulful Sparrow in downtown Elgin. Shop vintage furniture, collectibles and even jewelry that will make you the bell of the ball. Shoppers have a couple hours should head to State Street Market Shops. Over 30 shops all under one roof offer everything from handmade items to food items. Midwest Retro in East Dundee is a unique vintage and home decor shop that is perfect for finding that piece to complete the look. It does not matter what you are shopping for, the Elgin Area has the shop for you.

Yoga Moving around is one of the best ways to escape the winter blues and there is a major bonus if cuddly animals are involved. Elgin has two new yoga salons which opened this year. The Original Goat Yoga opened on the far West side of Elgin, just miles from Muirhead Farmhouse and Plank Road Tap Room. Yogis are invited into the warm barn to enjoy a session with cute goats named after Chicago’s beloved Cubbies. If you are looking for something to really warm you up and balance you then classes at Vida Yoga

and Fitness are just what you need. The studio is located just blocks from the Elgin Metra Station along the Milwaukee District West line from Chicago and steps away from new dining establishments in downtown Elgin. We hope however you decide to #ExploreElgin this winter you have a great adventure escaping the cold. All business addresses and websites are available at www. ExploreElginArea.com. If you are looking for more winter activities in the Elgin Area check out our blogs at www.ExploreElginArea.com. We also have a blog posts on Indoor Activities to Do with Kids and The Areas Hottest Hot Chocolates.

by Vanessa Passo On February 15, the stage will be set, and the matching western shirts will be ironed for an iconic night of rarities, harmonies and brotherhood. The Everly Set will bring the influential 60’s vocal sound of Rock ‘n’ Roll, better known as The Everly Brothers, to the Arts Center of Elgin Community College. According to The Everly Set bio, “two acclaimed NYC singer-songwriters with a mind-bending, three-decade age difference combine millennial sass with baby-boomer pluck to present The Everly Set: Sean Altman & Jack Skuller Approximate The Everly Brothers.” With artistry that influenced groups such as The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel and The Beach Boys, The Everly Brothers are best known for hits like “Bye Bye Love” and “Wake Up Little Susie”. You can expect both Altman and Skuller to unleash their sparkling vocal harmonies to create an unforgettable experience, honoring the pair of brothers, complete with matching western shirts (which total a set of eleven!). The duo of Altman and Skuller share an age difference of over three decades, which makes for a dynamic and contagious energy between the two! BRAVO spoke with the fun-spirited, talented men to share their take on The Everly Set, their own musical achievements, and how their generation gap makes the duo work so unforgettably. BRAVO: Where did you grow up, and at what age did you discover your love of music? Altman: I am a child of the

rough’n’tumble Bronx, NY, where the only thing that kept me from getting beaten up by hooligans was cracking wise and singing loud. When I was 10, I discovered the rock musical Hair; at 15 I was smitten with barbershop harmony; and in high school I had a recurring daydream that Art Garfunkel would perish in a fiery car crash and that Paul Simon would pluck me from chemistry class to take Art’s place. I’m not proud of that daydream and currently I wish Garfunkel no harm. Also, Simon & Altman sounds like a personal injury law firm. Skuller: I grew up near Hoboken, NJ (Sinatra town) and I remember always seeing musicians performing right on the Hudson River in the summertime, including my dad. I was always surrounded by a lot of blues, jazz, and country music when I was growing up — especially in my own house. Once I picked up a guitar and learned “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” that was it for me. BRAVO: Who have been some artistic influences on your music? Altman: As a singer, I’m influenced by The Beatles, The Drifters, the Beach Boys, and my “acapella father” Jerry Lawson of The Persuasions. As a songwriter, I cherish The Beatles, Steve Miller, and Felice & Boudleaux Bryant, the Nashville husband and wife songwriting team who wrote the Everly hits “Bye Bye Love”, “Wake Up Little Susie”, and “All I Have To Do Is Dream”. Skuller: I’ve always been influenced heavily by the melodies of The Beatles and the energy of The Ramones, along with a

ton of rockabilly and blues artists — particularly Eddie Cochran, Elvis Presley, and Little Walter. That last name is the reason I learned to play harmonica. BRAVO: Describe one of your proudest moments in your musical journey. Altman: I’m immensely proud to have founded and directed the vocal group Rockapella for eleven years. I’m psyched (and financially blessed!) to have co-written the classic “Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?” TV theme song with my childhood chum David Yazbek who, despite having just won a Tony award for composing “The Band’s Visit” on Broadway, wrote his most famous song with ME.

paired together to sing “Mrs. Robinson”. I’m pretty sure I had more hair on my back than Jack had in his drawers, but we harmonized beautifully. When Jack was 19 we did our first Everly Set concert, as a lark, just for family and friends. Jack was allowed to perform at the club but not drink a beer. Now that he’s 22 he is my conduit to all things millennial — the hip new lingo, the latest indie bands, the emojis, the artisanal craft

ational gap can sometimes make it difficult for us to synchronize our choreography. BRAVO: What is your favorite song or moment in The Everly Set? Altman: I love singing the big hits, but my favorite moments are when we turn the audience on to the lesser-known songs, like “I’m Not Angry” or “Poor Jenny”. People regularly tell us that the songs they had never heard before were their favorite part of the concert. Skuller: I second that! I also love jumping into the audience for a guitar solo or two. BRAVO: What can the audience expect from The Everly Set? Altman: We are pied pipers in a celebration of Phil and Don’s incredible legacy. We do all the big hits, lots of superb rarities that should have been hits, and several Everly cover versions of other artists (Buddy Holly, Carole King, Merle Haggard). We also have a whole section of the concert devoted to the Everlys’ influence on The Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel. Tying it all together are weird, funny stories about the Everlys and ourselves. Best of all: matching western shirts.

Skuller: As a Disney Records artist at age 16, I played my own songs in major cities all around the U.S. to audiences that reached 30,000 people. It was an incredible experience that I am very proud of. Soon after, the Songwriters Hall of Fame awarded me the (Buddy) Holly Prize for my songwriting and performance. BRAVO: How have The Everly Brothers influenced you, musically? Altman: Strangely, I came to the Everly Brothers rather circuitously — as a child of the 60s & 70s I was influenced by the bands who were influenced by The Everlys: The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, The Bee Gees, The Hollies, and The Eagles. Skuller: As a kid, I was always around rockabilly and blues music in what I would consider a punk rock household. I often can’t believe how natural the Everlys’ music feels to us when we’re up on stage. When I first started writing songs at age 11, I always tried to emulate their melodic sensibilities. They possessed a beautiful simplicity. BRAVO: How does the generational gap between the two of you affect your work together? Altman: We met at a Simon & Garfunkel tribute show when Jack was 14 and we were

Skuller: I hope people have a really good time. It’s easy for me to forget that we’re doing an approximation of the Everly Brothers. It feels like us. We jam-pack so much into our show (besides the 99 songs-per-hour) that it always feels like a party. beers, and the “intermittent fasting” craze. I’m his window into all the things that the distant future holds for a professional musician: insufficient savings, a gnawing sense of not having fulfilled one’s artistic potential, and reflux. Seriously, though, despite being in very different places in our lives (I have ketchup in my fridge older than Jack!) we enjoy being partners on this weird and unexpected Everly journey. Skuller: I keep telling Sean to throw away that ketchup bottle but he won’t listen. It’s a sentimental thing with him. Also, the gener-

JULIANNA SLAGER The movement of the human body has a primary, natural direction: forward. It’s designed that way. Forward is also the direction of Time and Creation; an art form that doesn’t move forward defies Nature and insults humanity. “The popular portrayal of ballet is that it’s pretty, boring, and for old ladies,” said Julianna Rubio Slager, Co-founder and Artist Director of Ballet 5:8. “But ballet done right is both intellectual and visceral.” For Slager, doing it right involves doing something new. “At Ballet 5:8, the creation of new work is a fundamental value. We love and value the classics, but we want to be known as a company that continues to push the art form forward as we inject

new ideas and life into the artistic ecosystem.” The professional company, founded in 2012 by Slager and fellow dancer Amy Kozol Sanderson, has grown from six dancers to more than twenty artists, apprentices and trainees. Their expanding repertoire of original and innovative works tours the nation for over forty performances every season. In their first seven years, Ballet 5:8 has premiered more than twenty new ballets, most choreographed by Slager, and all of them addressing issues of “life and faith through innovative storytelling and breathtaking dance.” The name is a reference to the Biblical scripture found in Romans 5:8, which is essential

5.2

to the belief system that underlies the company’s faith-based creative work. But for all of us — not just artists or believers — faith and risk occur in similar proportions. “Creating new artistic work is always a risk,” Slager confided. “It’s bringing something brand new, unseen and untested, into the marketplace of ideas.” What’s at risk is not just ideas, but real physical, emotional and financial capital. “It requires an immense amount of energy (and let’s be honest, funding) to choreograph, design and produce any ballet. But without new work, the art form stagnates and becomes a mere looking glass into a former generation of risk takers and entrepreneurs.” Creativity is the only path forward. “Nostalgia can only sustain an art form for so long,” she said. “Ballet must continue to grow, change and flourish, and the primary means of that growth is the creation of new work.”

Unequal Footing At about the same time Slager and Sanderson started Ballet 5:8, local artists Erin Rehberg and Sarah Manata of Core Project Chicago created Going Dutch, an event designed to

address the underrepresentation of female choreographers in the dance world. It has since grown into a three day festival that celebrates the female voice in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts in downtown Elgin. “It’s true that most ballet dancers are female, and yet the vast majority of Artistic Directors and Choreographers are male,” Slager confirmed. “As progressive as the art form of ballet can be, it has followed the same curve of paternalism in gender power dynamics as the rest of the culture, with many of the same consequences.” In 2019, women are still the minority among artistic directors in all media. “I take great pride in being a Latina choreographer,” she said. “Ballet has always been empowering to my female voice.” In her work as a teacher in Ballet 5:8’s School of the Arts, she has trained and mentored a rising generation of aspiring artists. “The ballet community has trained many brilliant artistic women that are capable of leading the art form into the next generation. We have a deep well of resources that we can draw from if only we can get over the stigma of our own traditions. It’s time for more women — and women of color — to be given the opportunity to create and lead.” (continued on p. 18)

And when presented with such a task, we believe there’s nothing quite like the incredible gift of Rock & Roll music. We also firmly believe that if you’re gonna do this, you better do it right and give the audience MORE than what they paid for. Dynamic playing, tight three-part harmonies, dance floor-friendly energy and lots of love are what you can expect to experience at a Belvederes show. So get in on this rockin’ dance party! No cover The Cave Dwellers — Chicago’s Original Garage Band The British Invasion hit the shores of America in 1964. With the arrival of the Beatles, Dave Clark Five, Rolling Stones and a wave of other bands from England, the rock in this country was suddenly alive with garage bands forming everywhere. In Chicago, keyboardist Gary Goldberg, a student at Wright Junior College, and classmates guitarist Freddie Glickstein, keyboardist Victor Alfonso and guitarist Henry Gardano had the same idea. They formed The Cave Dwellers. Their goal was to make records and cash in on the popularity of rock music. After adding bassist Bruce Gordon and drummer Rick Sorci, the band was set. Soon they were in the recording studio in the basement of Fong’s Cantonese Restaurant in the city. With Freddie singing the lead on “Don’t Break My Heart Again,” written by Gary, and a remake of Ray Charles’ hit, “What’d I Say,” The Cave Dwellers made their first record. Over the next few years, the band recorded other tunes, including “One More Day” and “You Love Me No More.” A lady by the name of Carmen Poulos, a 16-year-old, met the band at a Herman’s Hermits concert and helped the Cave Dwellers get some much-needed publicity in the form of a newspaper article in the Chicago Sun Times supplement publication, “Chicago Midwest”. By 1967, The Cave Dwellers had recorded “Run Around” and received airplay on Chicago radio stations WLS and WCFL. The Cave Dwellers changed their lineup a number of times over the years. Others in the band included Dennis “Stoney” Phillips, Fred Faith, , Fred

Strauss, Al Stone, Peter C. Budd, and Danny Moyer. More recently, band members included Joe Krowka, Cliff Killion, Eddie Grzyb and Peter C. Budd for a second stint. Today, The Cave Dwellers consists of original members Gary Goldberg and Rick Sorci (who returned after 49 years). Also back from the past is Bruce Gordon on a part-time basis. They are joined by the new band members Kurt Michaels (lead guitar) and Gary Blum (bass and guitar), and the newest arrival, (guitarist-harpist) Ted Aliotta - a founding member of the famous Aliotta, Haynes and Jeremiah. 8p, Danny’s on Douglas, 231 Douglas Avenue 847.742.5400 dannyspizzaelgin.com. Sat.Feb.9 ACT/SAT Test Preparation Course at ECC Prepare for both the SAT and the ACT tests in one class! This course offered by ECC incorporates materials from both tests because the ACT® and SAT® tests share 75% of the same content. For the 25% of each test that is unique, we clearly indicate ACT®- versus SAT®-only content. Both tests evaluate the same basic skills; by building these skills you are not only preparing for both

5.2 tests at the same time, but you are also developing critical problem-solving skills rather than learning how to memorize problems. This course incorporates a pre-test and a posttest. The SAT practice exams will be given for pre and post. The course then includes 12 hours of core subject instruction. Students should come to class with several pencils and a calculator. All other materials and books are supplied. SAT® is a trademark registered and/or owned by the College Board, which was not involved in the production of this course. ACT/ SAT exam fees not included in price. Those who are willing to be vulnerable move among mysteries. —Theodore Roethke Huh? What mysteries? And why would anyone ever choose to be vulnerable? I’ll take along an extra scarf and hat so I am less vulnerable in worsening weather. I’ll take extra fish oil and vitamin C to be less vulnerable during the cold and flu season. In conversation with someone I have just met, I’ll skim the surface rather than plumb the depths so as to not reveal too much about myself and, therefore, be exposed. Why enter into a new friendship when doing so requires a breaking down of the armor with which we steel ourselves? With today’s heightened political climate, one is dangerously vulnerable if she speaks her opinions publicly. Yet Roethke says that there is a payoff if we allow ourselves to be vulnerable: We get to “move among mysteries.” Is that like moving down the hallway in the middle of the night after a power outage? Is it like taking the “seeky route” to your destination rather than the highway? Is it like letting a friend console you when you prefer to always be in control? What is it, anyway? What mysteries and why the risk? I guess the trick is to be vulnerable and experience the mysteries.

January 19-20, Sat & Sun

How so? Smile more, look up, look outward, open the heart. The “pay it forward” practice might be a good example. The vulnerability is clear, involving oneself, albeit indirectly, with a stranger and money out of pocket, but what is the mystery? I think I know the answer. Another example might be giving your trust to someone who has betrayed your trust. Uh, oh, you could be hurt again. But what is the mystery reward?

And is the mystery always a reward? Is mystery a reward in and of itself? I think I know the answer. This is heart, flowers, candy, love, love, love, smoochie, woochie month. Doilies, Hershey kisses, Valentines Day cards. Do we remain with only the one(s) we love or become vulnerable by extending our love? Do we choose to be vulnerable and experience the mysteries? What do you think? P.S. If you care to share your thoughts, you could do so on BRAVO’s Facebook page. Also, BRAVO is always looking for writers (see page 47 of this issue). You could write about the mysteries you have experienced.

Brett and Derek hurled the cooler in a shallow arc toward the fire buckets. It slammed onto the ice a few feet from Clem, bounced, skidded and tipped over. The lid flew open. Clem’s face looked flushed in the firelight as he looked up to see Wayne’s stainless steel chafing dish tumble out and slide into the dark water beside him, where it disappeared: pan, lid, stand, spoon, fish balls, canned heat and all. Still surrounded by floating embers and small pockets of flame, Clem strained to raise himself onto the ice with his elbows and reach for the handle or rim of the cooler, but he was weakened and his wool coat was saturated and heavy. “I can’t,” he gasped. “Take the coat off!” Derek exclaimed, “It’s weighing you down!” Brett picked up the loose end of the extension cord. Clem groaned, and took the cuff of one sleeve between his teeth and worked that arm loose, then did the same with the other sleeve. His coat sunk slowly behind him as he caught hold again on the edge of the ice with the friction of his flannel shirt. “Come on, Clem!” a woman shouted from the yard. “Grab the cooler!” Wayne turned his head and scowled at the woman, then taunted Derek, “Really? Was this really necessary?” He glared at Brett. “Did anybody call fire and rescue?” Jessica stepped out of the patio doors and stood just outside the house, watching the drama from a distance. “And did you forget? About five hundred bucks of fire bucket money is in that coat ...”

“If you can just reach the cooler, we’ll hold it for you,” Brett urged. “Just use it to climb out. We won’t pull this time.” Grunting with effort, Clem tensed and raised his chest out of the water, tilting to one side. He thrust out the opposite arm and scrabbled for a grip on the edge of the cooler’s lid. With his fingertips, he nudged it little by little until he could get his hand on the inside surface. He dragged it toward himself, then exhaled and went slack. “Good job, Clem!” the woman hailed. “Now close the lid, lock it down,” Brett commanded, “get it into the water so you can climb on it.” Clem grunted erratically as he maneuvered the cooler into the water, then frog-kicked and hoisted himself up on top of it. Derek and Brett pulled their end of the cord taut so the cooler pressed up against the broken edge of the ice. Clem heaved several deep breaths before making another move. Near the house, Jessica heard someone say, “He’s gonna need to warm up when he gets out. Can you get a bath started? Warm, but not hot.” All the guests stood watching as Clem lethargically inched himself over the top of the cooler and onto the solid part of the ice. He belly crawled slowly past a few fire buckets toward an area with the least melt, and then rolled over onto his back in the bootprinted snow. “You did it, buddy!” Brett cheered.“Come on Clem, get up, you gotta get warm,” a man implored. “Who is this guy?” Wayne

whispered, “What is he even doing here?” “He works for Brett,” Derek murmured, “Been with him for a long time.” Two women ran from the house with blankets as Clem slowly rose to his feet and staggered toward shore. As they wrapped him up, a few guests gathered around to slap his back or pat his head and offer encouragement. They shuffled toward the house with their arms around him as Jessica scurried away from the patio entrance to give them plenty of room. The cooler remained floating in the lake where Clem went in. Wayne grabbed the electrical cord and pulled gently, then tugged, then jerked to get it up onto the ice. He easily reeled it in and untied it from the cord. Jessica walked up and looked him intently in the face. “Let’s go,” he sighed. The air had become thick with moisture since they arrived, and a few drops of freezing drizzle could be felt on their faces. Without saying any goodbyes, they half-tiptoed through the tall grass along the frozen waterline, looking down in order to avoid anyone else as they quietly left the party. Wayne spotted Clem’s gun in the snow when he almost stepped on it. He halted, put down the cooler, and picked up the pistol. He brushed off the snow, blew on it and wiped it on his coat. “Wayne,” Jessica said. He removed the magazine and ejected a live round from the chamber with fluid, instinctive movements. “What are you doing?” she urged. Wayne looked into the breech. “That stupid — ... he easily could have hurt somebody.” “Wayne, put that thing down.” Wayne stuffed the ammunition in his pocket. “Yeah, this is a piece of junk,” he scoffed. “It looks like it came from the gutter. I’m surprised it didn’t jam after one shot.” Jessica looked at him quizzically. “How you do you know anything about guns?” Wayne exhaled. “My mom was raised on a ranch in eastern

41

Washington,” he said as he examined the pistol. “She taught us everything about shooting, about every kind of gun.” He rubbed the side of the barrel with his thumb. “I’ve fired pistols that are like works of art, but his thing doesn’t even have a make.” “Whatever, just leave it.” “It’s probably stolen.” Wayne paused. “I hate to think what that guy was into. This is the kind of crap that causes problems.” He abruptly flicked the pistol toward the fire buckets where it clattered and slid into the opening in the ice and disappeared into the water. “I wonder how much garbage is at the bottom of this poor lake,” he snickered. “Clem should really be down there, too.” “Hey wait a second,” Jessica countered, “Your fancy cooler saved his life.” “Really? What did it save? He’s a creep, a drunk, an ass,” Wayne snorted. “He did that to himself.” “Then you saved him from himself.” “Maybe,” Wayne thought for a second. “But I lost twenty bucks and a really nice chafer.”

They took the long way around the outside of the house, back to the road where their car was parked. Wayne loaded the cooler in the trunk and slammed the lid, which had accumulated a thin glaze of ice.

Wayne looked at her blankly. “Seven.”

About Faque News For nearly three years, we have printed at least one advertisement for a fictitious business or event alongside our articles, calendar, columns and legitimate ads in every issue of BRAVO magazine. Called Spurious Ads, these realistic and gently humorous designs were intended to call attention to all display advertisements, as each month brought an amusing new search for a fake ad, hidden amongst our real ads and editorial content, somewhere in the magazine. Unfortunately, some of our more appealing Spurious Ads were taken quite literally, and this caused a few cases of embarrassment or disappointment for readers, which we sincerely regret. So we are experimenting with a new section called Faque News, which contains fictitious news articles in the style of The Onion or Weekend Update, combined with Spurious Ads. Our hope is that by keeping the spoofs and the honest content separate, we can avoid any further inconvenience or confusion for readers. We welcome your comments. Area Schools to Observe Metric Time The Cookane Consolidated School District (CCSD) will be the first district in the nation to adopt metric timekeeping in all of its instructional facilities beginning with the 2019-2020 school year. Buildings are scheduled to have new 10-hour clocks installed beginning in July. “It’s an idea whose time has come,” said district spokesperson Allison Benitez. An emerging world standard, metric time divides each day into ten hours, with 100 minutes per hour. Each minute consists of 100 seconds. Compared to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is used everywhere else on Earth, the metric second is slightly shorter than the UTC second, and the metric minute is 44% longer than the UTC minute. “Our high schools will start their day at 3.30 in the morning,” said Benitez. “It sounds early, but students will be pleased to know the school day is only 3.2 metric hours long. The final bell rings at 6.50.” Considered by some to be an improvement over standard timekeeping, metric time is based on the decimal system (Base10 to mathematicians), the same familiar numerical system used by currencies and metric measurement standards for distance, weight and volume. Time calculations are greatly simplified and the shorter metric second provides increased precision. “Children will be introduced to metric time starting in kindergarten,” Benitez said. “But we will no longer be teaching the concepts of morning and afternoon to younger learners. Those ideas will be part of the new third grade history curriculum.” In middle and high schools, the instructional day will be divided into ten periods of 30 metric minutes each, with a two metric minute passing period between sessions. After-school activities such as sports, clubs and fine arts will be limited to one metric hour. “One of the great benefits of metric time is how much better it integrates with extracurricular activities like music, athletics and career interest clubs.” When asked about timekeeping for interscholas-

tic sports, Benitez said “All football and basketball games within the district will consist of five periods of 10 metric minutes each.” Studies have shown that students in metric time learning environments develop much sharper mathematical abilities as a result of the mental computations required to convert to and from the standard time they experience outside of school. “It’s been understood for decades that dual language environments greatly increase children’s verbal reasoning capabilities,” Benitez said. “We expect to see similar gains in quantitative reasoning by the time these kids reach high school. One of our long range goals is to graduate students after ten metric years instead of twelve.” Not only the clocks will change in the 27 schools within the district. All new text books will be purchased which reflect consistency with the metric time standard. It’s part of an overall cultural immersion that school officials believe is necessary. “In order for students to succeed, they will not be allowed to wear wrist watches or carry mobile devices that display standard time,” Benitez said. “The District is committed to educating a generation of young people to have superior thinking skills.” Critics have questioned the goals and objectives of metric time education, citing its lack of applicability to the world outside the classroom. Experts consulted by the district pointed to research that suggests an international standard ten-day metric week would increase global productivity by up to 60%, which could become necessary in a future universe of interplanetary competition. “We’re so proud to be pioneers of metric time here in Elgin,” said Benitez. “A hundred metric years ago, we set the world’s finest watches to standard time. Now Elgin is going to become America’s future capitol of metric timekeeping.”

New Name, Same Mission by Bob Oswald Fox Valley Lyrical Productions, the new name for Soirée Lyrique, is highlighting its website while remaining committed to bringing classical vocal arts to the Elgin area.

Appearing in “Voices” will be Sior, Tetyana Torzhevska, Simon Kyung Lee and Franco Martorana. Taiwanese pianist Dr. Chiayi Lee will accompany the singers.

The new website, foxvalleylyricalproductions.org, offers users a chance to order tickets to shows or donate to the group online, along with views of past productions and photos of the not-forprofit organization’s history.

Sior, a Canadian soprano, has performed with many organizations, including Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Florentine Opera Company, Youth and Music Canada and the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. She performed the role of Rosalinde in the production of Die Fledermaus.

Artistic Director Solange Sior, who founded Soirée Lyrique in 2014, said the group will be expanding the productions into new communities. “We’re trying to grow,” Sior said. Supporting that, the production “Voices From Around the World” will be offered at three different locations in February and March. The concert will be a unique collection of songs performed by four international soloists who had lead roles in last year’s productions of Die Fledermaus and Tosca.

Ukrainian soprano Torzhevska made her opera debut in 1989 at the State Opera Studio in Kiev. She has performed with the National Oper of Ukraine and won first prize at the international Golden Lyre festival in Poland. She performed in the role of Floria Tosca in Tosca. Lee, a tenor, began as a child actor in his native Korea. He has sung with the Utah Festival Opera, Chamber Opera of Chicago and at the Kansas City Puccini Festival. Lee made his Carnegie

He played the part of Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca. Italian tenor and Switzerland native Martorana made his stage debut with Chicago’s Lincoln Opera. He studied with Pavarotti’s teacher Arrigo Polo before he enrolled in the University of Oklahoma and later joined the chorus of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He sang the lead part of Alfredo in Die Fledermaus. The event will include operatic excerpts, musical theater standards, Italian songs, Viennese waltzes, popular music and folk songs from around the world. Sior founded Soirée Lyrique in 2014 as a smaller group that she figured would mostly do Soirées. “I never thought I could do fully staged opera productions,” she said. But in 2018, a special donor, Stu Ainsworth of St. Charles, requested and sponsored a fully

staged production of Die Fledermaus, which was done with a string quartet. Following that the group staged Tosca, produced with a 16-piece reduced orchestra under the direction of Maestro Philip Morehead, a veteran of more than thirty years as pianist and conductor at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Stu Ainsworth died in May 2018, leaving the legacy of a great friend to the group and a great fan of opera. “Stu was like an angel of the art,” Sior said. “He provided so much joy for all to share.” Before Soirée Lyrique, Sior founded O.P.E.R.A. (Opera Professional Entertainers Repertoire Association) in Elgin in 2001. The group brought variety shows and opera productions to the Blizzard Theater at Elgin Community College, the Larkin High School auditorium, Drendel Hall at Del Webb’s Sun City in Huntley, Cahn Auditorium in

With financial support from the City of Elgin, in 2008 the group produced The Elixir of Love by Donizetti with a full orchestra at the Hemmens. Sior said former Elgin mayor Ed Schock supported the organization. “He recognized the quality of our productions and thought it would be a great way to attract people to Elgin,” Sior said. “He requested we change the name of the company to Elgin Opera.” They held two performances at the Hemmens, which included the 50-piece New Millennium Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Francesco Milioto, now conductor at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Elgin Opera produced full-orchestra concerts of highlights and excerpts of operas, with Maestro Milioto, through 2011 at the Hemmens. Sior started Soirée Lyrique in 2014 and began offering shows at small venues and area churches, often with piano accompaniment or a string quartet. The concerts included selections of opera, musical theater, Italian songs, German lieder and French melodies. Last year, Soirée Lyrique produced two full operas, Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss II and Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca. Both presentations featured Soirée Lyrique’s Young Artist Chorus. Young artists are an import-

ant part of Fox Valley Lyrical Productions. Part of the group’s mission is to train, nurture and launch young artists through its summer Young Artist Program and The Fox Valley Rising Stars vocal competition. Sior said having young singers in the large productions exposes more people to opera. Children in the production “brought their families to the show,” Sior said, “and everyone fell in love with opera.” In each organization, Sior has “had the young singers at heart” while providing training sessions, performing opportunities and the summer vocal competition with cash awards. Sior said she hopes to continue the competition if the group receives financial support. In the meantime, Sior and the board of directors are working “back stage” to improve the foundation while making sure Fox Valley Lyrical Productions maintains a link to the community. The upcoming concert “Voices From Around the World” is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at First United Methodist Church, 216 E. Highland Ave. in Elgin; 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at The Gallery of the Norris Cultural Art Center, 1040 Dunham Rd. in St.Charles; and 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at St. Paul United Church of Christ, 401 E.
