Who doesn’t love the movies? Arguably, the movies and its theaters shape our American culture and define our collective memories in a way matched only by music. However, as with any of the arts, changing consumer tastes, combined with new technology and the need to make a profit, too often demand an “out with the old; in with the new” philosophy. While understandable, it is always a loss when another old structure goes the way of the wrecking ball. The Crocker Theater was one such building. Fortunately, there is a dedicated cadre of Elgin residents who are diligently working to preserve and restore the remaining facade of the Crocker Theater. Watching the big screen in the dark inside a cavernous theater while sharing the experience with hundreds of others? That’s magic, folks.

Drawn on a piece of Bavarian limestone, this is one of the older processes for lithography. Created from a drawing of Brian Booth Craig, master sculptor from Pennsylvania, who I had the great fortune to draw from life while in his sculpture studio when he took time to pose for me. Done by printing off a print to get one direction and then printing directly from the stone for the opposite direction. Meant to show two faces of Man ... the “Equivocation” of life.

“The urge to create has taken me in many interesting directions. I discovered Michelangelo and Norman Rockwell on the same day. Falling in love with the figure led me to study anatomy. The study of anatomy led me to medical illustration. While at university to study medical illustration, I fell in love with sculpture. Wanting to sculpt led to learning how to use tools which took me on a hairpin turn to carpentry. One motivation to become a carpenter was to buy a barn and be able to turn it into a studio by myself, and now that is what my near future holds. “I have continued drawing the figure at every opportunity all while raising a family. My love of the figure and passion to create work Michelangelo or Norman Rockwell might be proud of drives me to this day. Drawing is the basis for all art: Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking ... three mediums for which I have a passion.” “Equivocation” is available at the artist’s website: www.eftstudios.com

Erected in 1923, the Crocker became part of the magic already being generated at the Grove and Rialto theaters. The biggest theater in Elgin, it contained 1,600 seats and had a balcony. For the first few years, the Crocker showed silent films, accompanied by a Wurlitzer organ. The “talkies” arrived in 1929 with The Careless Age, starring Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.and Loretta Young. In 1937, the Crocker introduced air conditioning after another upgrade to the building. For Elginites of a certain age, the movie house holds many a treasured memory. For native Elgin resident Sharry Lynn Blazier, the Crocker was her first movie theatre experience. She recalls seeing “Mary Poppins” in the 1960s when downtown was booming. At the time, she was in kindergarten, and she continued to see movies at the Crocker until it be-

came run-down, showing second release films. Blazier remembers her first movie outing with friends in 1974, which featured Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. With a smile, she recollects they were “Four girls all together falling in love with Redford and Newman.” The last film she saw at the Crocker, circa 1977, was “the granddaddy of teen-age slasher movies: The Town that Dreaded Sundown.” By that time, the Crocker began its descent into oblivion. Although several attempts were made to resurrect the theater for other entertainment uses, nothing worked. Eventually, the City of Elgin bought the old theater and mothballed it for years. In 2009, the Crocker was sold with the idea of creating a new condo complex on its footprint. Perhaps due to the housing bubble demise of 2008, the deal fell through and the property languished. During that time, the elements of the facade were moved to a storage building. Then, the storage facility was torn down, and the facade pieces were moved to an outdoor city lot. The conditions weren’t ideal, and eventually, the cheap wooden pallets broke down and sunk into the mud, taking some of the precious pieces with it. John Marston, one of the facade volunteers, thinks the

very nature of Elgin’s blue-collar economy has prevented widespread demolition from razing the downtown area. Because investment money wasn’t attainable for most working class families, many of the original downtown buildings remain. There is a “hardcore group of preservationists who have striven to keep it alive, and restoration is the next step.” While no one person is credited for saving the facade, Elgin is a city of residents who are passionate about its history. Marston credits the people of Elgin who “had the foresight to save the facade.” Elgin has kept many of its original buildings and resisted the tear-down craze of the 1990s. Marston believes that “preservation is really important” when it comes to keeping the city vital. “Elgin’s a little hidden gem that outsiders don’t appreciate.” However, Marston continues, “You really have hope for the city when you see people like Mike and Christen taking up the cause.” Leading the charge is Michael Zimmer, an Elgin native who earned his degree in architecture at U of I and came home to apply his talents to preservation and restoration. Christen Sundquist is the Historic Preservation Planner for the City of Elgin. Neither works in isolation as other individuals and organizations have championed the

waterproofed tarps to protect the fragile pieces of terra cotta and bricks from further ruin. Zimmer rallied the groups and volunteers, and they did a mind-boggling job of cleaning, organizing, moving, and categorizing the following: “6,500 bricks, 150 pieces of terra cotta, with just 140 pieces to complete the terra cotta facade,” all of which took “five four-hour work days to get the results so far.”

little protection it offers, says Sundquist, is that owners must present a plan for review to the city’s Historic Preservation department. It is then up to the city whether or not a landmark building can be demolished. For now, the facade will remain on the outside lot, but because of the EHC money,

facade restoration. The Downtown Neighborhood Association’s Design Committee (DNADC), Elgin Heritage Commission (EHC), and Stephen Whalen of the Public Works Department are key to making this project work. According to Marston, there are “three degrees of separation in Elgin before you hit that common denominator.” The close-knit groups of volunteers and professionals unite in harmony to care for their beloved city. For instance, the DNADC spent countless hours cataloguing the pieces while the EHC provided a grant to pay for the pallets and

What, you may wonder, inspires such dedication? For Zimmer, it is part childhood nostalgia of remembering the Crocker and a “labor of love and physical work.” Zimmer and others “want to get people together and make things happen,” and to “make preservation relevant to younger people.” “After 15 years of being ignored,” Zimmer notes,”we are going to be the stewards” of the Crocker remains. The ultimate goal is to get the facade into a “marketable condition.” Sundquist would like it to “be used in a thoughtful and educational way to be enjoyed by Elgin’s residents and visitors.” It’s a noble cause, one that will require people like Zimmer to carry out the preservation of at-risk buildings. Surprisingly, even buildings with landmark status do not guarantee clemency from the wrecking ball. The

Christmas Harmonies

All the World Rejoices Nothing But Treble, Elgin’s premier women’s choral ensemble, will help you to celebrate the holiday season with “All the World Rejoices,” a concert featuring music from a variety of times and places on Saturday, December 14, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. at the Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren, 783 W. Highland Avenue, Elgin. The program will present works as diverse as a Nigerian carol, a 13th-century French carol, an a capella setting of a Trinidadian carol, and an American hymn tune set in bluegrass style. The audience will be treated to traditional holiday fare as well as a novel Pentatonix arrangement of “Up on the Rooftop” and a piece based on a Finnish reindeer call. Choral music enthusiasts will recognize composers Z. Randall Stroope, Ola Gjeilo, Dan Forrest, Shawn Kirchner, and Stephen Hatfield among those represented in the evening’s concert. Through the generosity of an Elgin Arts Commission Individual Artist Grant, NBT welcomes the collaboration of numerous instrumentalists, including accomplished youth musicians from the Larkin High School Visual and Performing Arts Academy and the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Maud Powell String Quartet.

Hear the Fox Valley Harmonizers at the Epworth United Methodist Church, 37W040 Highland Avenue, Elgin on Sunday, December 1, 2019, at 3:00 pm when they will present “Christmas Harmonies for Family and Friends,” a concert of Christmas music. Admission is free, and there will be a freewill offering. Two other groups will also join us for this concert. Members of the Golden Lights Singers sang together in the Western Lights Chorus of Sweet Adelines International. After retiring from the chorus, they decided to form a “senior” group. They collectively have 350 years of barbershop singing. Members are from Aurora, Yorkville, Chicago, Countryside, Bensenville, Stickney, LaGrange Park, Western Springs, LaGrange, Lemont, Villa Park, and Lombard, and they enjoy coming together for friendship and singing barbershop music. Act of Grace was founded in 1992 by members of Grace United Methodist Church here in Elgin, with a mission to write and perform songs to match the theme of a given day’s service. Current members of the group are from St. Mary’s Catholic, Harvest Bible Chapel, St. John’s Lutheran, Zion Lutheran, and Wesley United Methodist Churches. They share a special sound in the style of folk music, and their blend of voices and instruments is enjoyable as they sing their original songs. Learn more about the Fox Valley Harmonizers and their fascinating history in a feature article on page 18 of this issue.

Elgin Cultural Arts Commission

A Year in Review and a Look Ahead to 2020 by The Elgin Cultural Arts Commission The Elgin Cultural Arts Commission presents a year in review and a look ahead to 2020.

Events The Elgin Literary Festival brought four featured speakers to the Hemmens Cultural Center for two days of free programing on the written word. The festival includes a poetry night, panels, and workshops for readers and writers. The Elgin Fringe Festival celebrated 6 years in September with two weekends of performance and visual arts as well as the Family Fringe. The festival hosted over 100 shows in downtown! Including a red-carpet arrival and performances, finalist films from all over the world, and a live performance by Chamber Music on the Fox, the 11th year of the Elgin Short Film Festival was a huge success with over 550 tickets sold. Kwanzaa Celebration kicked off in December of 2017 at the Gail Borden Public Library with local organizations participating in the seven core principles of Kwanzaa, traditional foods, and a live performance by Kucha and Baba Tony. Kwanzaa is back this year on December 8th from 2-4pm at the Gail Borden Public Library.

Public Art Two new pieces of public art were selected as part of the New Works program. The Call for Art brought back sixteen responses from all over North America in both 2D and 3D proposals. The ECAC awarded the honorariums to Melina Scotte and Andrea Jablonski.

Andrea Jablonski, a Polish born multidisciplinary artist of Chicago IL, will be placing her mural, “Water Under the Bridge” along the Riverwalk, under Highland Avenue. The piece is comprised of local flora and fauna and will play with the river it is located alongside. When asked about her inspiration about the piece, Andrea responded, “Activating a challenging space and adding color to the Riverwalk area was definitely a big part of my decision to send in a proposal. Local flora and fauna always interest me and working in new neighborhoods and meeting new people and collaborators makes it all worthwhile.” Melina Scotte, originally of Argentina but more recently hailing from Oakbrook Terrace, will be applying her 2D work titled “Las Raices Del Alma” on the garage door of the Spring/ Chicago Street Parking Deck. The work, which translates to “Roots of the Soul,” represents culture and traditions that are part of what we acquire as a person and what we pass on to the next generation. Comprised of vivid colors and a lone resting figure, the piece is deals with the concept of harmony. The ECAC also began the new Utility Box Wrapping program this year and successfully wrapped three downtown boxes in original artwork. You can view Margie Criner’s “Float” on the box located at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Highland Avenue. Visit Travis Roozeé’s “Noize!” at the corner of Chicago Street and Spring Street. LeRoy Smith’s piece, “Ducks on the Fox,” can be seen at the corner of Prairie Street and Grove Avenue.

Grants The ECAC awarded over $50,000 in grants to local artists and arts organizations for event programming such as children’s theater, original student-created opera, workshops, visual art exhibitions, staged plays, and so much more.

Looking Ahead What does 2020 look like? Elgin Fringe Festival and the Elgin Short Film Festival will be back in September, Art Harvest will return on the last Saturday of October, and Kwanzaa will return in December. New public art will be selected in early spring for installation

in the summer/fall which will include a new mural and new utility box wraps. New in 2020 is a series of Arts Workshops hosted in conjunction with Americans for the Arts. These workshops will take place at the Hemmens Cultural Center and are free and open to the public. Where does art start? In the mind, in the eye, in the hand?

turns good art into great art.

Mixed Media

If, as Simonsen says, “perfection” can be defined in terms of balance, the irony is that balance can be defined as an ongoing series of corrections. Like making a mistake look like it was intentional. Or getting rid of guests who have overstayed their welcome.

For artist Ken Simonsen, “it starts with a wandering mind.” He’s the creative force behind Psymonsen Studios, his combined professional practice of design, illustration, and painting. The alternate spelling seems to be an allusion to the ancient Greek word ψυχή, which has entered English in various forms that refer to the mind, soul, spirit or self.

“My best ideas seem to come when I’m not 100% focused on the problem. They seem to stumble into my brain when I least expect it.” Seeing a portfolio of his work, you’d never choose the word stumble to describe the clarity of concepts and technical finesse that he achieves in an enormous range of media from digital graphics and airbrush to hand drawing and traditional painting on canvas. You might be tempted to call it perfect. “Perfect art to me is a good balance of discipline (the work part) and passion (the emotional part),” he said. “I marvel at those photorealistic portraits you see online, and yet I don’t want to be just another copy machine.” We have cameras for that. Calling to mind Plato and the Greek dualist philosophers, Simonsen quotes a good friend who advised, “you don’t just paint

We asked Simonsen if he was an introvert or an extrovert. “I’m a bit of both ... I enjoy going out to meet up with friends and family, yet most of my life is spent alone at my studio. Visitors are always welcome, but eventually I’ll throw you out so I can get back to work. I can’t work and host guests at the same time.” According to Hellenistic astrology, Simonsen is a Scorpio: brave, loyal, passionate, truth-seeking, and outwardly mysterious. Like an oracle, he speaks of “these divided times we find ourselves in.” But the Scorpion is, above all, resourceful.

pictures, you paint ideas.” His “Surnatureal” series of acrylic paintings on canvas are perfect examples of the power of an idea that synthesizes images, words and concepts into original subjects executed with great skill. “I’ve always loved working in the surreal and getting inspiration from nature,” he reflected. “I may look at an animal that I’ve seen millions of times in my life, and I try to forget everything that I know and take for granted about it. Then suddenly those antlers might appear more like a splash of milk. Of course, once the idea hits, the meticulous planning starts.”

“Lactose Intolerance.” 16 x 20” acrylic on canvas.

As a working artist, careful planning is essential. He has been hired to paint or design on motorcycles, cars, trucks, airplanes, electric guitars and buildings. Things that

can’t be crumpled up and thrown away. “It’s taken me many years of practice to build up the confidence take on difficult commission work. And yes, I still do tear up drawings and start again, but hopefully I get that part over with in the sketch/planning stage.”

“My favorite part of the day is at the end when I can crack that first beer and look at the small measure of a masterpiece that I managed to pull off.” To see more examples of Ken Simonsen’s considerable portfolio of artwork, visit his website at psymonsenstudios.com. But you won’t find an “About the Artist” page there. —JP

Every artist has a process, and for the great ones it starts with drawing. This month’s cover artist, the celebrated figurative sketch artist Tracey Padron, says “Drawing is the basis for all Art.” She can’t be wrong. Simonsen works from drawings to paintings and says, “There’s not a lot of room for mistakes in the final painting stage, and I have become rather adept at making my mistakes look like they were done on purpose.” Sometimes, causing just the right, the perfect accident is what

Expression: A Familiar Refrain

Fox Valley Men of Harmony Chapter/Chorus History by Chris Missele tet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA).

Just a few months after World II ended, the Fox River Valley Barbershop Chapter chorus, composed of singers from St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia, gave a program at the Elgin State Hospital. Afterward, a quartet from the Chapter performed at a party held at the Elgin Elks Lodge. This prompted further interest in forming a Barbershop Chapter in Elgin, and a committee was formed to invite male members of other lodges and clubs in the area to attend a meeting on April 30, 1946, in the Elgin City Hall courtroom. The Elgin Barbershop Chapter was organized and Ben Willey, a chemist with the Elgin Softener Corporation, was appointed chorus director. Willey had sung with the original group of Chicago Barbershoppers under the direction of the legendary Frank Thorne. The new Chapter initially continued to meet in the Elgin City Hall courtroom, hosted by Mayor Walter Miller. The first Elgin Chapter show was held on May 21, 1947, at the Masonic Temple, with 1300 tickets sold at $1.50 each. The show was called “The First Annual Parade of Quartets” and included choruses and quartets from the Fox River Valley, Elgin and Chicago Chapters. The Elgin Chapter was presented its official charter by Frank Thorne, President of the organization then known as the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quar-

An unusual and unlikely feature of that first show was an act billed as “Gay Nineties Piano Frolics”, presented by two Elgin Chapter members, including Clarence (Ki) Eames, who had served as Drummer Boy, Company E, in the Spanish-American War!

The Elgin Chapter has produced a show for the Elgin community and surrounding areas every year since then, in various venues and with a succession of entertaining guest quartets, both male and female, some of whom were already, or about to become, International Champions. The second event ever held in the Hemmens Cultural Center was the Illinois District Barbershop Contest and Convention in October 1969, hosted by the Elgin Chapter. The Chapter held its weekly meetings and annual shows at the Hemmens for a number of years.

become the Fox Valley Harmonizers. We’re still singing four-part, close harmony, a cappella music in the barbershop style ... with an added bonus! You can hear the Fox Valley Harmonizers at the Epworth United Methodist Church, 37W040 Highland Avenue, Elgin on Sunday, December 1, 2019, at 3:00 pm when they will present “Christmas Harmonies for Family and Friends,” a concert of Christmas music. Admission is free, and there will be a freewill offering. Two other groups will also join them for this concert. The Golden Lights Singers are retired “senior” members of the Western Lights Chorus of Sweet Adelines International. They collectively have 350 years of barbershop singing. Act of Grace was founded in 1992 by members of Grace United Methodist Church here in Elgin, with a mission to write and perform songs to match the theme of a given day’s service. Current members of the group are from several Elgin churches. They share a special sound in the style of folk music, and their blend of voices and instruments is enjoyable as they sing their original songs.

The Elgin Chapter chorus eventually adopted the name “Fox Valley Men of Harmony” in recognition of its need to draw members from and serve the broader area of the Fox Valley. At the May 10, 2006, Elgin City Council Meeting, Mayor Ed Schock read a proclamation recognizing the Fox Valley Men of Harmony as the oldest sustaining chorus in the City of Elgin. In 2018 the all male organization, now known as the Barbershop Harmony Society, launched their vision of “Everyone in Harmony”, which made it possible for women to join the Society. Three women have now joined our chorus, and the Fox Valley Men of Harmony have

Come Sing With Us! The Fox Valley Harmonizers are looking for men and women of all ages to join us in singing exciting four-part, a cappella, close-harmony barbershop music. Don’t worry if you don’t have a wonderful solo voice, don’t have extensive musical training, or have never sung with a group before. Maybe you can’t even read music. Many of us are in the same boat.

You can choose to sing any of the four parts — tenor, lead, baritone, and bass. The leads carry the melody, while the tenors harmonize above the melody, the basses sing the lowest notes, and the baritones share the middle, around the leads, to complete the chords. We welcome into our membership anyone who enjoys being part of a chord of music, whether it originates from the heart or from a musical arrangement. The Fox Valley Harmonizers meet every Monday evening at 7:00 P.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 310 E. Main St, East Dundee. Parking is at the back of the church. From Main Street, turn south onto South Van Buren Street, turn at the first right onto Johnson Street, then turn right again into the parking lot.

Seeking Interim Conductor Nothing But Treble (NBT), Elgin’s premier women’s choral ensemble, is in search of an interim conductor. NBT’s founding artistic director, Ms. Rosalind Zager, is relocating. The ensemble is currently accepting applications for an interim conductor, beginning in January 2020. Qualified applicants may send their resumes to Debby Walters at jndawalters@sbcglobal.net. New singers are invited to join the chorus in January. NBT rehearses at the Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren on Monday

8 Reasons to Shop Small in Downtown Elgin by Jennifer Fukala: Executive Director, Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin Every time you pick up a coffee at Cafe Revive, grab lunch at Elgin Public House, drinks at Martini Room or buy a new outfit at Soulful Sparrow, you're making an impact in our local community. You are supporting friends and neighbors who own businesses and are making a positive impact in Downtown Elgin. The Elgin Downtown Neighborhood Association compiled a list of businesses open on Small Business Saturday (flip 2 pages to view). We encourage you to shop local on November 30 and all throughout the holiday season. Here are 8 reasons to shop small now and all year long:

1. You celebrate the unique character of

our community. Small businesses are often one-of-a-kind destinations reflecting that friendly, local vibe.

2. You support local jobs. Our small

businesses are often owned by fellow Elginites like you. Better business means more jobs and job stability.

3.

You help limit environmental impact. Local businesses make more local purchases, meaning less shipping.

4. You encourage the community and

influence those around you to do the same. It’s a win win!

5.

You increase economic impact. When you shop at a small business 67% of what you spend says in the community vs 43% or less when you shop at a national chain.

6.

You benefit from specialized service and expertise. It’s not just about the item you buy, shopping small is just as much about the experience you have while doing so.

7. You invest in entrepreneurship and

creativity. When small businesses are supported entrepreneurs are encouraged to consider Downtown Elgin as a location for their next great business idea.

8.

You help make Downtown Elgin a destination. “Incorporating small business shopping into your holiday traditions gives back to our community. I invite you to join me and give a gift that matters when you #shopsmall in #downtownElgin this holiday season.” – Jennifer Fukala, Executive Director of the Downtown Neighborhood Association As you shop on Small Business Saturday there are two additional perks you will want to take advantage of. First, is the shopping punch card. Pick-up a card at a local busineses and with every purchase, you will receive punches. Once you have

$75 worth of accumulated punches you will receive a token for one free piece of art from the Oddball Art Machine! The machine will be at Blue Box Cafe in November and then moves to Soulful Sparrow for December. Second, keep an eye out for a Small Business Saturday “Swag Bag”. These limited quantity bags are stuffed full of promotional materials including a special coupon sheet. Coupons are valid from December 1 - 31 so you can continue shopping local and supporting Downtown Elgin busineeses throughout the entire holiday season. Learn more at www.DowntownElgin.com

Everybody HAS to branch out into

new territory as a musician! Really, it’s more than a show: it’s a collection of talented musicians doing exactly what they love and creating an amazing experience in the meantime. ACQ plays more than 100 instruments every show. Family-friendly.

The Nitz & Howe Experience The country’s longest running cabaret show makes its Elgin premiere at Lounge51. For over 20 years, with over 1200 performances, The Nitz and Howe Experience has been a staple of the Chicago nightclub entertainment scene. Every Saturday night, Daryl Nitz and George Howe host a musical party that is part improv, part stand-up, part music, and always entertaining. The music ranges from Broadway to pop to country to rock to even a little Gilbert and Sullivan. Nitz also performs many classic celebrity impressions like Neil Diamond, Frank Sinatra, and a dead-on Billie Holiday. Eclectic is the word. Perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, bachelorette parties, out-of-town guests, name it. Featured in Time Out and seen on WGN, CLTV, and NBC, this show is “the best party in town.” Daryl is an Elgin-born, 1982 graduate of Larkin High School, and this event marks his return to his hometown where his church and schools provided him with many of his first performing opportunities. $15 in advance. 2 drink minimum. 5p, Dream Hall at 51, 51 S. Employees at the headquarters of Troffer International in Gilberts are pilot testing a program designed to raise awareness of social injustice. It’s part of a nationwide corporate movement that takes diversity and inclusion policies to the next level. “Parking with a Purpose is our new corporate initiative that addresses racism, which is endemic in our society,” said Beth McCormack, Vice President of Human Resources at Troffer.

In conjunction with recent parking lot maintenance, McCormack had crews mark out a preferred parking area close to the building using brown stripes instead of white. Employees can choose stalls within this section marked with a sign “I Stand Against Racism.”

80 stalls that are now reserved for associates who oppose racism,” reported McCormack. “They also filled up immediately. It’s really wonderful to see.” In speaking with employees in the Troffer parking lot, however, Faque News learned that the program is not without its flaws. “I have 50-minute commute, and by the time I get here around 8:45, all that’s left is racist parking,” said Darrell M., a manager in the Engineering Department. “It’s embarrassing.” “I work in the call center and I don’t start until 3:00,” said Norma S. “There’s no way I’ll ever get in the woke parking. Now people think I’m a racist just because I work second shift.”

I STAND AGAINST RACISM

“With over 600 employees on this campus, we have a very large parking lot,” McCormack said. “This section reserves a parking spot close to our front entrance for any team member who will take a public stand against racism.” On the first day of the program, every one of the 48 newly marked stalls was occupied before 7:15 am. “We were so thrilled with the initial reception of Parking with a Purpose that we expanded the program to include

One employee who asked not to be identified spoke of difficulties for car pools.

“We can’t get here until 8:30 because we have to get our kids on the school bus before work,” she said. “Do they [management] realize how bad it looks for three Latinas to get out of a car in the racist parking section?” In response to a follow up request for comments, McCormack wrote, “We’re extremely proud of the success of Parking with a Purpose. In fact, we just ordered 100 rainbow mugs which we will give free to any employee who wishes to publicly signal support for our LGBTQ+ associates. To encourage participation, we’ll offer free specialty espresso drinks in our artisan coffee bar to anyone with a rainbow mug. We’re calling it Perking with a Purpose.”

When Your Creative River Flows Backwards by Michael J. Murschel, SD Scenario

Then.

My office windows overlook the southern end of the Elgin Riverwalk Promenade. Their sweeping views of the Fox River towards the west and the north see the days pass by in all their light and shadow, temperaments, and glory. The weather rolls into the Fox River Valley from the southwest, billowing across the surface of the Fox as it flows south to the Illinois River, Mississippi River, Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Ocean, and eventually the world.

The weather sets in.

Occasionally, though, the Fox River flows north. It goes backwards. Or so it seems. Of course, it doesn’t, really. Whilst some rivers do reverse their flow, either by human intervention, earthquakes, or influx of water from tributaries, the Fox, at least by my office, does not. It is an optical illusion. The effect of wind on water, rippling up the surface with every indication the flow has reversed. Once the wind settles down, the river looks as it should, and all is once again well.

Analogy This is may be how we see our art. Whether performance, visual, or auditory art, or writing, mixed media, whatever. Everything with our art appears to flow smoothly. Our spirit is centered, attitude bright, and outlook buoyant.

And sometimes that weather is of our own making, when we allow people and circumstances utterly beyond our control to best us. Cloud our vision, our horizon, and our sunlight. This is surface stuff. Wind on water. Just as the river still does what the river will do as it flows on into the wider world’s vast waters, most likely, our art is still there, still flowing, carrying its precious message to the world’s shared pool of emotion, sense, and feeling. It is at this this time of the year especially, when blocks and off-roadings in our art can be especially difficult, because we instinctively feel everything should be festive, bright, comforting. And yet, it may not be because our art, just like the seasons of the year, goes through its own cycles.

Perspective and Another Analogy Now. The beginning of this season is one of increasingly shorter daylight, of gale force winds, and rivers appearing to flow backwards, and even freezing up. Eventually. On toward the end of December, daylight hours increase once again. Spring becomes possible. Rivers thaw and flow correctly.

This is a season of waiting. Watching. Ever at the ready for the return of the light, whatever that means in your theology, philosophy, spirituality, and art. This is a season of looking inward, developing your inner craft of resilience and patience, being awake to that moment when your art returns to you. In truth, our art probably never left us. It is merely the effect of wind on the flow of our creativity. Our challenge is to understand what that wind truly means, and how it works, if we let it, within us for our own good, for our art, and the good of those who, in turn, are affected by our art.

Please ... I’d love to hear where you believe you are in the flow of your creativity, and which direction your river appears to be flowing. Jewels of   the Vine by Jeffrey R. Pierce Jewels of the Vine. Jo had spelled out the phrase on her plate with spaghetti noodles. “I turned away for just a minute, then I turned back around again and there it was,” Evelyn said. “I called you right away.” There was an empty tomato can by the stove, and the label bore the same phrase, spelled out in cursive lettering with a stroke that resembled a vine or a rope. Jo was the right age to learn to read, and I instinctively went into teaching mode, pointing to the letters as I pronounced each word slowly. From that point on, I introduced reading and writing to Jo, along with more complex rope constructions. Her knots were always carefully made, evenly spaced and loose so that the structure could be perceived. She had no trouble seeing a diagram and understanding it in three dimensions. I trained her to hold a pencil and make lines and loops on paper. Before long, I was able to spell out a word with rope, and she could duplicate it on paper. It took patience, but by the time she turned seven, she could write about a hundred different phrases on command, and possessed a listening vocabulary very much larger than that. The County Social Services department asked me to spend less time tutoring Jo and more time working with the school system

to get her enrolled. Unfortunately, the schools lacked any trained staff or curriculum to educate her effectively. The few deaf and retarded children in the county were kept at home, or sent away to institutions, and as far as the school superintendent was concerned, Jo was “untrainable.” I knew differently. At home, Evelyn taught Jo to braid her own hair — which grew quite long — and make beaded jewelry with fancy cords that formed elaborate bands and medallions. Though she never talked, she developed beautiful cursive handwriting and was able to answer questions and initiate conversations. Jo loved to write, and she could read our handwriting but had trouble with Roman style type. We compensated by writing out simple excerpts from history, literature, the Bible, and the newspaper for her to read. She learned quickly this way, and loved to copy our sentences in her own notebook, interspersed with simple questions. I gave her oral exams, to which she responded in writing. The school principal in Sturgeon Bay found all of this fascinating when we met with him, but he insisted that public school was inappropriate for Jo. Though he tried to explain it as an inability to accommodate for her, I viewed it as a refusal. This lack of progress frustrated me and it was to continue for years.

“Has Jo ever seen the docks?” I asked Evelyn one morning in April, 1944. “No ma’am. Mr. Charles thinks it’s no place for children.” “Let’s go.” We walked the ten blocks to the harbor, where most of the fishing fleet was offshore, working Lake Michigan. Evelyn insisted we avoid being seen by Jo’s father, as their understanding had always been that Jo should stay near home. At one end of the docks, there was someone on a boat inspecting a fishing net. As we approached, it became apparent that it was a young woman, completely covered in rubber waders, a long sleeved shirt, gloves, and a brimmed hat. Evelyn held Jo’s hand tightly as we watched the woman crouching to examine each strand of rope that formed a three-inch square mesh of continuous netting, about five feet wide. Every so often she found a break, and using a short length of smaller rope, she joined the two ends back together with a combination of overlapping winds and hitches. Jo was transfixed by this.

“Evelyn!” Charles shouted from some distance away. He had seen us from the end of the pier and was walking quickly toward us.

know she has a special gift for ropes and knots.”

“I’m sorry Miss Rita, we shouldn’t have come down here.”

“I most certainly do,” he said, and pulled up his sleeve to reveal a Turk’s Head sailor knot bracelet, one of the patterns I had shown to Jo months before.

I had never met Charles Durant in person, though I had been coming to his house three days a week for nearly a year.

“Jo, would you like to meet someone else who has a gift for ropes and knots?” he whispered. “Follow me,” he said to us.

“I’m surprised to see you here,” he said to Evelyn.

We carefully stepped down onto the dock and walked over to the slip where the young woman was working. She stood up tall and straight as we got to the side of the boat, and smiled broadly with flushed cheeks and bright blue eyes.

“Yes sir, I know. But Miss Rita wanted Jo to see where you work.” Charles turned to me and said, “You must be Jo’s teacher.” “Yes, I’m Rita Lucchese. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Durant.” “Hi, Jo!” he enthused, and Jo smiled bashfully. Charles stepped over and lifted her into his arms. “You’re a good girl.” She pressed her cheek against his neck. It moved me to witness what was clearly a healthy, loving relationship. “She’s a wonderful young lady,” I said. “I really enjoy getting to know her. You must

“This is Birgit, the best fisherwoman on the Great Lakes,” he boasted. “Birgit, this is my daughter Jo, her nanny Evelyn, and her teacher ...” he turned to me and hesitated. “Rita!” I said loudly, and blushed. Charles told us about Birgit’s father and his fishing business, how her brother was serving in the Navy in the Pacific, and how Birgit was so talented at repair-

ing nets and floats and all kinds of rigging. But what I remember most was the sight of her broad shoulders, blue eyes, straight teeth and rugged outfit. That Spring, we went to the harbor about once a week, on days when the weather was fair. If Birgit was in port, we spent our time watching and talking with her. Charles was aware of our presence, but didn’t discourage it. I also started visiting Birgit alone, on my own time, occasionally bringing her my homemade bread and soup. I was intrigued by her, and in our private talks I found myself revealing personal details I hadn’t shared with anyone before. Then she said something that would change my life. Taste: A Sockful of Wisdom

The Long (and Short) Christmas Mornings by Michele Machowicz Decades ago – more decades than I care to count – I was a child and like all children, Christmas morning and opening presents should have been one of the highlights of that day. In my case, I was lucky to give and receive presents, but as to the opening of them ... ahhh, there was a problem. My dad, his father, his brother, and his best friend made up the main crew caller team for the New York Central Railroad at the local depot. Crew callers were the railroad Uber drivers of the time, transporting train engineers to and from their trains. On holidays trains ran limited schedules, but still the rails never stopped. Whoever worked the day shift, the railroad’s holiday shift on Christmas, invariably took vacation time to be home with his family, and because my dad was the last hire working swing shift that meant he filled in when others were absent. Every Christmas Day, my Dad went off to work at 6 a.m. and came home about 3 p.m. He felt loyalty to his crew caller team, all family and friends, so he never asked any of them to work Christmas in his place. That left my Mom and me at home on Christmas morning stretching into the afternoon with all the presents under the tree just staring at us, waiting to be opened, but we did not want to deprive my Dad of the fun of Christmas so what to do? To-

gether my parents came up with a plan to keep me from lingering longingly at the base of the Christmas Tree. On Christmas morning when I woke up, I opened my sock. The sock contained a few munchies and candies, but the prize ‘toy’ was The Old Farmer’s Almanac. I sat in my pajamas, usually in the warm and cozy kitchen, and would read aloud my new found wisdom to my Mom, entertaining her but not getting in her way, while she prepared our Christmas dinner. By telling her stories about hedgehogs or reading about home remedies, by using the ephemeris to figure out when sunset would finally be after five o’clock or reciting in my childish cadence the poems of the months, time would literally fly and soon, Dad was home! After all that waiting over all those years, I do not remember any toy or game or piece of clothing as a most wonderful, precious gift. Precious and wonderful and significant was having us all together opening those now long forgotten presents. To this day each Christmas morning I relax and read the current year’s The Old Farmer’s Almanac, not concerned a bit about what might or might not be under the tree, what still needs to be cooked or baked, who is coming over or not, but just enjoying the moment and celebrating the memories of my childhood Christmas mornings. —MM
