P. Alexander Brenner P. Alexander Brenner is an artist working in multiple media from his studio on the east side of Elgin. Peter’s paintings are abstract expressionist compositions of color and texture, produced from spontaneous impulse using found techniques. His works are in private collections nationwide, and are frequently exhibited throughout Chicagoland. Two of his paintings were recently featured in the Seigle Gallery of Elgin Artspace Lofts during the Fall Show presented by Elgin Art for All. Peter is a regular exhibitor at Elgin Art & Soul. For over thirty years, Peter has been a highly successful jewelry artist, and his private studio includes extensive production facilities for hand carved jewelry designs cast in precious metals. An Epicurean Exploration of Elgin words and pictures by Theresa Carter Goodrich The night before we explored Elgin, we dined on lettuce. Lettuce and water*. That’s all we would allow ourselves, because the next day our agenda included four restaurants, one of which was a buffet, one taproom, a farmer’s market, and a pop-up dinner. You might say it was a “full” schedule. *This might be a slight exaggeration. But you get the point. We woke up famished, but we still had the presence of mind to put a cooler in the car for the tons of leftovers we’d have. We knew there was no possible way we could eat everything.

They offer coffee drinks with beans from Conscious Cup in Crystal Lake. Local beer is on tap in the afternoon, they serve Mexican-American fusion breakfasts and lunches, and you can pick up delectable pastries throughout the day. We met colleagues from Explore Elgin Area and selected a couple of pastries to enjoy while discussing our astronomic, gastronomic plans. Jim chose the cinnamon roll and I, the lemon cherry blondie.

We were wrong. As a gourmet (me) and a gourmand (Jim), dining out is one of our favorite things to do. Plus, I’ve hosted nearly a hundred food- and drink-focused events in the Chicago area. You might say we know a thing or two about ingesting and imbibing. The folks at Explore Elgin Area know this, which is why they invited us to eat and drink our way through their City in the Suburbs. And oh, boy, did we ever. Get out your stretchy pants and join me on this epicurean exploration of Elgin, Illinois. Disclosure: Explore Elgin Area hosted our day of dining, but all opinions are mine and not influenced at all by the addition of two inches to my waistline.

Café Revive Our day began at Café Revive for a light breakfast and hot beverages. The café is a permanent fixture in Dream Hall, a unique space that hosts pop-up events, including the dinner

Sugar normally puts me to sleep, but these baked-in-house goodies were worth any impending crash. Since it was a go-big kinda day, we took lattes to go, lavender for me and matcha for Jim. It was a sweet start to a savory day, and if we were shooting for the culinary heavens, this was a propitious lift-off.

Grand Victoria Casino Despite living in Elgin for three and a half years, I’d never been to Grand Victoria Casino. I’d even trekked and biked the

portion of the Fox River Trail that bisects the property, but I hadn’t set foot inside. I had heard, from people who know, that whether you’re a gambler or not (I’m not), the restaurants are worth a visit. Those people are right. We’d worked up an appetite by the time we entered Indulge Show Kitchen Buffet. Every casino needs a buffet, and this is theirs. Buffets are often, sometimes fairly, sometimes not, thought to be cafeterias that present

diners with options that range from bland to boring, all of them dried out under the aggressive heat lamps. They’re more about quantity than quality.

tacos topped with house-made salsa were filled with tender beef. “House-made” is redundant; nearly every item at Indulge is made in-house.

At Indulge Show Kitchen Buffet, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

We also had to try the perfectly mid-rare beef with horseradish cream sauce for me and au jus for Jim. Although we wanted to try the signature fried chicken and load up on a bowl of madeto-order stir-fry, we decided on creamy clam chowder. Dessert was gelato and a selection of pastries, all made at the aptly-named Indulge.

We took our seats in a booth with a view of the riverboat and the river. Executive Chef Jason Tsoris knew we were eating our way through Elgin and he wanted to give us a taste of what it means to dine at Grand Victoria Casino. Before we took a tour through the six micro-restaurants that make up the buffet, he sent a few favorites. Our introduction was a bit of a “nosh,” as Chef Jason called it, from on-site Buckinghams Steakhouse and Lounge: country pate with a cherry compote port sauce, warm camembert, crostini with rosemary butter, garnished with microgreens and a cucumber relish. I could nosh on that all day long. On a normal day. This day, that dish of deliciousness was quickly followed by a platter of

plump cold water lobster tail, savory clams casino with bacon, and delicate New England flounder coated in an almond crust with a champagne-shallot cream sauce. It was oh, so rich and decadent. This is what we’d been missing? Shame on us. We still needed to sample the buffet, and after a quick tour we made our selections. Knowing we still had four more places to visit, we tried to be judicious and followed some of Chef Jason’s recommendations. (Some, but not all. If we’d tried all of them we wouldn’t have been able to leave the booth.) The street-style carne asada

The buffet is available at lunch Wednesdays through Saturdays. If you want lobster, Friday evenings are the all-you-can-eat Maine Event Lobster Feast. There are also Seafood Crab Fest and Shrimp and BBQ Extravaganza nights, and Buffet Olé, which features Mexican cuisine. Sundays are for brunch and a Prime Rib Southern Feast. If our experience is any indication, whether you cross the bridge into the casino or not, dining at Grand Victoria is a safe bet.

good taproom, when I see (drink) one. I could have thrown a dart at Plank Road’s beer list and been happy with any of them. While that might be a valid method of selection, following Alan’s recommendations was more efficient (and a lot less dangerous). Jim and I each got a flight, making sure to choose different beers so we could try a total of eight of the thirteen on tap.

Plank Road Tap Room “I drink bad beer so other people don’t have to.” It’s a sacrifice, but Alan Moreno thinks it’s worth it. Alan and his wife Breanne own Plank Road Tap Room. It’s in a cabin situated on a two-thirds-acre lot with a fencedin beer garden that seems to scream “come drink beer and play games.” It’s a passion project and a comfortable, intimate place that only serves good beer. I appreciate Alan’s efforts. I’ve hosted sixteen AlphaBeer events. These events provide tastings of beer for every letter of the alphabet, with different beers at each event. That means, through those events alone, I’ve tried at least 400 beers. Most were good, some great, and a few (but not many) bad. You could say I like beer. You might even say I know beer, and know a good one, and a

I could tell you which ones we tried, but with the exception of Too Much Cologne, a kolsch collaboration with Crystal Lake Brewing that’s always on tap, they’d be different by the time you visit. Basically, Alan tries a beer, and if he likes it, he orders a keg. Once that’s out, it’s time for a new one. Alan said he’ll always carry a few hoppy beers, because those sell, but he also will always have porters and stouts. There’s a permanent spot for Krombacher, which Alan believes is the perfect lager. The list is heavy on local breweries. Solemn Oath is a favorite, as is Noon Whistle. They’ve also got a limited selection of canned beers. Wine lovers get their own taps. Beer fans also tend to drink coffee, and the

Morenos have partnered with Intelligentsia to offer cold brew on nitro and pour-over. You can come in at 7am, drink coffee until noon, and then it’s beer time. Plank Road Tap Room doesn’t serve food (and never will), which is a good thing because we could have stayed all afternoon. If you like good beer, this may become your new favorite place. I know it’s one of mine. We drove back into downtown Elgin. The rest of our day would be all about Grove Avenue.

Billy Brick’s Wood Fired Pizza If you would have told me that I’d eat a pizza with turnips and radishes on it – and like it – I’d have laughed. While I’m fairly egalitarian when it comes to my pizza toppings, turnips and radishes are not two I would ever have considered. Zucchini, maybe, but Jim would have said no uh-uh absolutely not. And then we ate a Billy Brick’s farmers market pizza and our world changed. Billy Brick’s Wood Fired Pizza is one of the newer places on Grove Avenue. When you look in the window, you’ll immediately see the half-dome brick oven that provides their eponymous dish.

We stopped into the Elgin outpost of the Chicago-based chain. A family occupied the seats in front of the oven, watching as dough went in and a few minutes later came back out, transformed. Frank Sibr, who owned the restaurant with partner Phil Lencioni, greeted us and upon finding out we’d come from Plank Road, jogged to the taps and returned with a beer from Lithuania. “Grapefruit!” I said.

As we ate, a record player spun 33s. A former DJ noticed the player and offered to unload some of his vinyl.

“Yes,” he said, seemingly a bit surprised that I’d noticed his consternation. “It’s too dry.”

Our total time at Billy Brick’s was less than forty-five minutes, but that short time was memorable.

Kris Palermo knows rice. He studied Japanese cooking in Japan, and for the first six months, he cooked rice. Only rice. That’s dedication, and it’s a drive you can taste in every grain, every bite of buttery salmon, every sip of green tea.

That was apparently the right answer, because before we knew it we were seated at the bar with not only a pint, but a pint mixed with Avion 44 tequila – a dangerous, refreshing, and tasty combination.

Melodi and Kris came to Elgin in 2009 from California and fell in love with the community. Their restaurant, which opened in 2018, combines a bit of their Cali background with traditional Japanese food and culture.

After that, when Frank asked us what we wanted to try, we said “We’re in your hands, sir.” “Farmers Market it is,” and a thin crust topped with turnips, radishes, zucchini, and polish sausage, all purchased at the market outside the restaurant’s doors, magically appeared. The crispy, chewy crust was the perfect delivery vehicle for the veggies and sausage. We now crave this odd combination. That pizza alone instilled us with trust, and we both feel comfortable walking into Billy Brick’s and saying “surprise us!” Our pizza was followed by a cheddar brat, also from the farmers market, wrapped in a pretzel roll and resting in a sauce made of a

Kubo Sushi & Sake Lounge “How could we eat another bite?” you must be wondering. So were we. But our mission to eat as much as we could so you’d know where to dine in Elgin, continued. Besides, it was sushi. Melodi, the sister in the brother and sister team that owns Kubo Sushi & Sake Lounge, steered us to the back of the restaurant and our seats at the sushi bar. Her brother Kris scooped rice out of a metal container and frowned.

Everything they serve, from the green tea to the bottle of Hana Fuga Yuzu Sparkling Sake to the fresh fish is provided by small distributors. We began with the Tartar Pyramid. If you get one dish from Kubo, get this gorgeous display of avocado topped with salmon tartare topped with tuna tartare. Melodi mixed it together with citrus ponzu sauce and aioli and told us to feel free to lick the plate. She’s seen it happen. A lot. We scooped it onto the fried wonton chips and unashamedly, unabashedly moaned. Kris’ tattoed forearms flashed as he deftly created maki for other guests, and nigiri for us.

Out of habit, we dipped our first bite into soy sauce mixed with wasabi, but after one bite we knew that wasn’t necessary.

Those three pieces of nigiri were the best sushi that either of us has ever had. Our meal (fourth of the day) ended with a dessert of mochi ice cream, just light enough to send us on our way without completely destroying us.

We picked up a gift for my mom’s upcoming birthday and a plant for our garden and then headed back to Café Revive. Jesus and Patrice poured me a pint and Jim and I sat outside and listened to the blues.

Downtown Elgin Farmers Market I think we were in a daze when we stepped outside again. The quantity and quality of everything we’d had that day was hard to process. Fortunately, we had some time to recover before our final meal of the day, so we browsed the vendors of the Downtown Elgin Farmers Market. The market had previously been on Thurs-

After indulging in every food group, in pastries, in pizza, in sausage, in cheese, in seafood, in eggs and dairy and beef and pork, dinner would be… Vegan. And gluten-free. Not being vegan or gluten-free eaters (obviously), we weren’t quite sure what to expect. We did have a fairly good idea it would be creative and tasty. Explore Elgin Area hadn’t steered us wrong yet. The dinner was hosted by Passionette Palate, which is a play on founder Annette Licitra’s name and her passion for healthy eating. After successfully battling her own health issues, she left a corporate job to help others live healthier lives. Now, with a culinary degree and integrative health coaching certifications, she coaches others. She also cooks for them. The communal dinner began with a fresh chilled peach and tomato gazpacho soup,

followed by zucchini “pasta” with roasted asparagus and pheasant black mushrooms. The summer solstice salad was cucumber pickled in lemon and topped with toasted macadamia nuts and a chimichurri dressing. Our entree was raw turnip ravioli stuffed with cashew cheese in a bed of pesto and roasted tomato sauce, and dessert was chocolate-cherry sorbet with roasted cherry compote. I think the easiest way to tell you how this dinner went is that I don’t have many pictures. I couldn’t get to the dishes fast enough. You can find recipes on her site, as well as any upcoming public events she has. If you’re looking to make a lifestyle change, Annette offers different programs. She’ll even tour your kitchen or go grocery shopping with you.

We gently made our way back to the car, our only leftovers half the cheddar brat in its pretzel roll and two pieces of farmers market pizza. You might think after a day like that everything would blend together, but I can still taste the sweet tartness of that lemon cherry blondie, the firm buttery lobster tail, the rich umami of the tartare pyramid, and the complex combination of radishes and turnips on pizza. I’m intrigued by the possibilities of vegan cooking, and I’ll be making some of Annette’s recipes in my own kitchen.

On the back, “Elgin IL rocks on FB; 9-9-18; AB.” In 2017, a 10- and 11-year-old sister and brother found a rock painted with #ValpoRocks in Valparaiso, Indiana. They loved the idea, and when they came home to Elgin they started a Facebook group. Ever since, people have painted rocks and hidden them for others to find, collect, or share. Frank decided to share his with me. Sadly, he passed away in August. It was a shock, and the restaurant closed in mourning. At first it wasn’t definite that they would reopen, but fortunately, they’re back up and running, serving that chewy, crispy, wood-fired pizza.

Elgin is an exciting culinary destination, one that offers a variety of cuisines and price points. I hope you’ll visit this City in the Suburbs and create your own epicurean exploration.

An Elgin Epilogue One of our favorite experiences of our day exploring Elgin’s cuisine was our time with Frank Sibr at Billy Brick’s. We met him briefly, but the pleasure he took from our appreciation of his team’s work, the enthusiasm with which he wanted to share his favorites, was infectious. Our interaction didn’t end just because we left his place. We’d barely taken our seats at Kubo when he wooshed in and presented me with a painted rock. “Always Smile,” it said.

When you go, ask for a shot of tequila in your Lithuanian beer and raise a toast to Frank. And always smile. Theresa Goodrich is the Emmy-winning founder and publisher of The Local Tourist. Olde Tyme Radio Show Imagine that it is sometime in the 1950’s and you are at home in the evening listening to your radio positioned carefully on a table in the living room. You are there with the rest of your family because an exciting program is about to begin and you and your family love the Christmas Programs that are presented on it each evening during the holiday season. You can still have that excitement that you used to experience and you can take it even one step further. Elgin Theatre Company is allowing you to be an audience member in the actual studio audience of radio station WETC while they create a “live” presentation of three scripts that

were taken from actual radio shows in the 50’s. You will see the actors creating characters like Jack Benny, Fibber McGee, and Connie Brooks right before your very eyes. You will see the actual sound effects crew performing their activities with various pieces of equipment that actually create the sounds that you would normally hear during a radio program. Some of the different sounds and the ways that they are created are almost laughable at times. Again, you can react as you normally would if you were at home listening to your radio. For the last two years ETC has presented this type of show during the two weekends prior to the Thanksgiving weekend in November. This year they have three totally new scripts that were procured for audiences to enjoy and participate in. In previous years of the Elgin Old Tyme Radio Show these performances range from sell outs to almost sell outs. So, don’t delay! Get your tickets now so that you won’t miss out on one of the best possible offerings to set up the mood for you and your family for this coming holiday season. Concert to Benefit local Opera Fox Valley Lyrical Productions will be holding its second Benefit Event with a fundraiser luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17, at Evangelical Covenant Church, 1565 Larkin Ave. in Elgin. The luncheon follows the 10:30 a.m. worship service at Evangelical Covenant Church. Singers set to perform Nov. 17 include Sior, a soprano from West Dundee; mezzo-soprano Karen Archbold from Wheaton; tenor Nicholas Metzger, tenor Jeorge Holmes and bass-baritone Jim Hinton, all of Elgin. Singers featured from the Young Artist Program include Julia Smitendorf, 14, from Lake in the Hills and Blake Buczkiewicz, 15, from Huntley. Pianists will be Sior, Jonathan Besancon and Murna Hansemann. The singers will participate in the service. There are no tickets sales, raffles or auctions for this event, just a collection of donations toward the future of great local music performance. This event includes lunch. Funds raised will help make possible a staged operatic production in April 2020.

Destination Dundee a nonprofit organization

Our mission is to put a spotlight on Dundee businesses, offering fine and casual dining, unique shopping opportunities and personable professional services, to all nearby communities as well as our own villages.

Rochaus Built in 1910 as the Crystal Theater, and later known as the Dundee Theater, Rochaus is the new identity of the 400+ capacity venue on Main Street in West Dundee. Third Annual Kwanzaa Celebration by Elgin Cultural Arts Commission The holiday is celebrated over the course of seven days from December 26th until January 1st. The seven days of celebration signify the seven core principles of Kwanzaa and each day is the focus of one of those core principals. Those principles are as follows:

This year the City of Elgin will host the third annual “Kwanzaa Celebration” on Sunday December 8th from 2-4 pm at the Gail Borden Public Library. The event is co-sponsored by the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission and the Gail Borden Public Library. In addition to local artists and community groups, the event will be hosted by Chicago based storytellers Kucha and Baba Tony who will lead the audience in an interactive celebration of Kwanzaa which will include storytelling, music, food and the lighting of the Kinara candles. This family friendly event is free, open to everyone and we look forward to seeing you. December 2019 will mark the 53rd annual celebration of Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is a culturally based holiday that was created for people of African descent. It is a celebration of African history similar in style to the way Christians honor the birth of Jesus during Christmas and Jews commemorate Hanukkah. Kwanzaa has been called a celebration of the harvest and its roots can be found in Nubia and Egypt among other African countries. The name is derived from the Swahili phrase “Matunda ya Kwanzaa” which translates to “first fruits of the harvest.” Kwanzaa was created by Professor Maulana Karenga who was chair of the Department of African studies at California State University in 1966 to celebrate family, community and culture among African Americans. Though Kwanzaa is like other December holidays, it has no religious affiliation and is open to people of all faiths or no faith at all to celebrate.

Imani (faith) Like the menorah used by people of Jewish decent to celebrate Hanukkah, Kwanzaa celebrants use the Kinara. The Kinara is a seven-branch candle holder which holds seven candles, three are red, three are green and the center candle is black. The colors are significant as they are also used in other parts of the Kwanzaa celebration; black symbolizes the people, red symbolizes the struggle and green symbolizes the future and hope that comes from the struggle. One candle is lit for each day of the Kwanzaa celebration culminating with the lighting of the center black candle on the last day of the celebration. #Kwanzaa #ExploreElgin #getprincipled

“If I have a family dinner with engaging conversation with my wife and kids, and you pulled each of us into a room and asked us to tell you the story of dinner, we would each focus on different things from our viewpoint. It’s not that one of us is telling the truth and the others aren’t, it’s just different stories that can be told about the same dinner.”

“With any piece of art, you don’t know how it’s impacting people until you put it out there and ask them,” said Dave Hunter, Artistic Director of Green Room Improv, the in-residence theatrical ensemble at the Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin.

“One of the questions I always ask my video clients is: who is the viewer?” Knowing that viewer is crucial in determining how a story is written, and how it’s told visually. “I’m always thinking about one person who comes across this video, and what I need to do get that one person to keep watching.” This consciousness of the individuals in the audience is different from general artistic practice, in which a sculptor or writer makes revisions until they themselves are satisfied; or an actor, musician or dancer work hard to perfect their moment of performance. For Hunter, the story wasn’t told right if the communication wasn’t clear. “You can tell if the message is conveyed in a video by asking several people to watch it and asking them what they think,” he said. “It’s always scary, but it’s good practice to face reality and either pat

In last month’s interview with the groundbreaking jazz crossover guitarist Stanley Jordan, he described music as a room with many windows. Each different genre — jazz, rock, classical, folk, country — is a different window through which we look into the same room. Dave Hunter gave us a similar metaphor.

All of this collective effort demonstrates the generosity of artists to a public they may never see, meet or come to know personally. And yet some artists go further.

He’s referring to his work as Producer and Director of Green Room Productions, a video production company he started in 2000, which specializes in creative storytelling and messaging for businesses and nonprofits. In this line of work, meeting and knowing the viewer are paramount.

We dared to ask him the definition of art in the context of corporate videos.

University included study at the Second City Training Center for Improvisation, a craft he continues to hone on the stages of the Hemmens in Elgin, and the Cosman Theater in Huntley. Interpreting and telling other people’s stories is the essence of numerous performing and literary arts. And skill at improvisation is certainly not wasted in commercial video production.

You could replace the words “videos for business” with “improvisational theatre” and the definition would still be apt.

“Skill in improvisation helps because there are inevitable problems and obstacles that pop up during production,” he explained. “I’m used to coming up with new ideas on the spot, which is important in brainstorming, meetings with the client, and shooting on set. The skill of coming up with ideas is always valuable.”

General Auditions Goodly Creatures is preparing for their next season of shows. In the meantime, mark your calendars for November 9th! Mpulse is our monthly review of artist development opportunities in the Elgin area, for anyone with a creative pursuit, whether it’s a passion or a pastime.

Inside the Music Maurice Ravel was born on March 7, 1875, in Ciboure, France. At 14 years old he entered the Paris Conservatoire where he repeatedly failed to win the coveted Prix de Rome for composition. He was a “rule-breaker” musically speaking, and many of the works he submitted were judged too “advanced” by ultraconservative members of the jury. After many liberal-minded musicians and composers spoke up for Ravel, a scandal ensued and the director of the Conservatoire, Théodore Dubois, was forced to resign. Ravel’s Mother Goose Ballet was originally written for Jean and Mimi Godebski the children of Ravel’s friends. It was a piano piece for four hands so the children could play together. Each movement represents a character for the Mother Goose fairytales. Ravel said, “My intention of awaking the poetry of childhood in these pieces naturally led me to simplify my style and thin out my writing.” Join the ESO and Music Director Andrew Grams for a deeper look at Ravel’s Mother Goose Ballet with Inside The Music. In the first half Maestro Grams will break down what makes Ravel’s Mother Goose Ballet so unique (without going over anyone’s head), then after intermission hear the full piece played from beginning to end by the orchestra! Violin Master Class Adele Anthony, violin, will present a free masterclass on Saturday, November 2 from 10am to 12pm at the Gail Borden Public Library. The event, sponsored by S.E. Ainsworth & Family, and a project of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra (ESO) and the Gail Borden Public Library, is free and open to the public. Musicians participating in the class are violinists Stella Childs, performing Sonata No. 1 in G Minor, Adagio by J.S. Bach; Ella Saptura, playing Violin Concerto No. 3 in B Minor, Movement 1 by Camille Saint-Saëns and Annaliesa Caswell, performing Concerto No. 1, Movement 1 by Niccolo Paganini. The masterclass is part of educational programming offered by the ESO during the Classic Series concert weeks. Adele Anthony was born in Singapore as the daughter of Alphonse Jivaras Anthony, the founding concertmaster of the SSO. At age 13, in 1984, Anthony was the youngest winner of the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition, (now known as the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards), performing the Violin Concerto by Jean Sibelius with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. She was later the winner of the 1996 Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition.

Listeners Club At 1 pm in the Meadows Rooms at the Gail Borden Public Library, music lecturer and composer Jim Kendros will discuss

the ESO’s upcoming concert Bolero: Chabrier, Edwards & Ravel during the free Listeners Club. Music Director Andrew Grams will give a pre-concert chat before the Nov. 2-3 concerts that feature Chabrier’s España, Edwards’ Maninyas Violin Concerto, Ravel’s Mother Goose ballet and Ravel’s Bolero. These programs are part of the ESO’s goal to enrich, enlighten and entertain.

Drop-in Arts Education Side Street Studio Arts’ dropin programs are excellent for art makers of all ages and experience levels. Participants work with a variety of artist educators, exploring different mediums in each session. Instant Film Exhibit and Polawalk “Before My Eyes” is a group exhibition organized by Brian Garbrecht displaying artworks created using instant film photography. Free Pumpkin Composting Event The City of Elgin will offer residents an opportunity to compost their pumpkins with a collection event on Saturday, November 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the parking lot located at the southwest corner of Grove Avenue and Kimball Street in Elgin.Elgin is among many communities participating in the free, one-day annual collection event. This is the fourth pumpkin collection event for Elgin. Each year, the Elgin Sustainability Commission has sponsored the event to help educate attendees on the value of composting.Volunteers will be available to help transfer pumpkins from vehicles to the collection container. Participants also have the option to smash their pumpkins. Through A Fox River Testimony art exhibit, the foundation hopes to broaden interest in the health of the Fox River by appealing to the river’s esthetic value. Pizza Mobile App is First to Accept Cash The new mobile app developed by a local pizzeria will accept cash for purchases, in addition to the usual credit card and other online payment methods. It’s a “first” for mobile technology.

“The biggest problem for the pizza delivery business is the cash transaction,” said Giustin Spinato, owner of Allegro Pizza, a tech-savvy startup based in Elgin. “It’s a sales killer, and carrying cash is a risk and a liability for our delivery staff.”

“America needs to become a cash-free economy,” insisted Spinato. “As a society, we are lagging far behind certain towns in Sweden where cash is no longer accepted. With this new app, Allegro Pizza is taking direct action to remove paper money from circulation.”

Their new app for iPhone and Android devices displays the Allegro Pizza menu with its numerous crust and topping options, and when the order is ready to submit, the user can choose “Pay With Cash.” This activates the device’s built-in camera, showing a rectangular scanning template.

“The customer just lays any bill on a flat surface, aligns it within the rectangle in the camera, and clicks a button,” Spinato explains. “That’s it, cash accepted.” The images of the paper currency are stored in the app’s cloud database, and the value of the scanned bills is applied toward the pizza purchase. “Every sale amount is rounded up to the nearest dollar, and that fraction of a dollar is paid to the app developer as a fee,” Spinato said. “It’s actually less than the cost of credit card processing, and we consider that another win for this technology.”

People can literally drive up to the fountain and empty out their jars of coins at no charge, compliments of Allegro Pizza.” When asked if the app accepts the Elgin Doller, Spinato huffed, “No, it’s part of the paper money problem. There’s no way we’re going to assign value to it by scanning it.”

Thanksgiving rolls around again this month, and I have something for which you should give thanks. Writer’s Block. Artist’s Block. The Creative Wastelands. What? Why, of all things, should you give thanks for this seemingly utter desolation?

Because it affords you the opportunity to really, truly, and sincerely grow in your creativity, and, as a result, to bring a whole new level of freshness to your work, and maybe even to your life, as well.

And the abiding philosophy of Renaissance sculptor, Michelangelo, was that every block of stone holds a statue inside of it, and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it. The reality is that sometimes we all just shovel sand, and chip away at that block until we discover what is there. And even though we do not know at the outset what we will find, there is always something there which we, and our public, can give thanks for when it is finally revealed.

But that doesn’t necessarily challenge you, push your creativity to new levels, or keep you in the vanguard of the artistic appetite of your audience. So, eventually, when you do hit that wall of seeming non-productivity, that may be precisely when you are at your creative best. But you do have to do something to jump-start it. And sometimes that is just as simple as changing your perspective.

And don’t judge your work before it is completed.

If you use a lot of visual language, use auditory references, or kinesthetic verbs. Are you as author or character omniscient? Do you know everything before it happens? For fiction, let your characters take control and see where they lead you. For non-fiction, don’t steer the piece to your preconceived outcome. Instead, relinquish the destination and impact of the piece to what those whom you interview are really saying, or what your research truly reveals. And then, connect the dots of your research in different and

Shoestrings by Jeffrey R. Pierce “Does Jo stay in her room all the time?” I asked Evelyn. “No, ma’am, I take her for a walk every day, and Mr. Charles takes her to church every Sunday. We just don’t let her in the parlor.” “Why ever not?” Evelyn described Jo’s fear of electricity, and how they avoided exposing her to electric lights, the telephone and the radio. During the darker months of winter, they lit her room with a hurricane lamp. I asked about Jo’s short hair. “You see the way she ties knots in them dolls’ hair? She used to do that to herself, so Mr. Charles had me cut it short like that. Funny thing is, she can undo the knots when she wants to. I think she remembers which way every hair goes.” I asked if I could watch Jo’s behavior in the parlor just once, and Evelyn reluctantly agreed. We coaxed her out and walked to the middle of the rug. Seeming not the least bit fearful, she sat down at the foot of a floor lamp and tugged on the cord until the plug came out of the wall. As we watched, she twisted the cord into loops and spirals and wrapped it around her fingers.

Jo, sweetie, if you let them cords go I’ll give you a treat.” While Evelyn went to the kitchen, I watched Jo concentrating on the blind cords, winding and unwinding them, and twining them together. Evelyn returned with a large pretzel. “These are her favorite.” “Do you have a short piece of string, maybe twelve inches?” I asked, and Evelyn returned with a piece twice as long and handed it to me. “I took this off a parcel Mr. Charles got yesterday.” “Jo, look what I have,” I said, holding up the string. “Will you come over and sit by me?” She came to me holding the pretzel in her mouth and we both sat down on the rug. I handed her the string. “Make me a pretzel.” Jo laid the string out on the rug in the exact shape of one very large pretzel. “Can you make two pretzels?”

“No, honey, leave it alone,” Evelyn interjected.

She picked up the string and laid it out again as two connected pretzels.

Jo stood up and scurried to the front window. She grabbed two cords and raised the Venetian blinds so the late morning sunlight brightened the room. Ignoring everything else, she simultaneously wrapped the

“Do you have her shoestrings?” “Yes ma’am, I believe I do.” I laced one of Jo’s shoes as she watched intently without touching. Then I held up both loose ends and looked her in the eye. Looking down again, I slowly tied a half-knot, then made a bow and gently tightened it. Her eyes grew wide when I handed her the other shoestring. “Can you lace the other shoe?” I asked, as I tapped on it with a finger. She repeated the procedure exactly as I had shown it to her. I then untied both shoestrings and removed her shoes, then tapped on her shoes and touched her feet. She put on both shoes and tied them again. “I never seen her do nothin’ like that, Miss Lucchese.” Jo picked up the parcel string, wrapped it around her ankle and began tying and untying it like her shoestrings. It kept her occupied for quite a little while. “What can you tell me about her father?” I asked, “What does he do?”

According to Evelyn, Charles Durant was a naval officer in World War I, and retired as a CPO Boatswain’s Mate after fifteen years of service. He worked in Green Bay after the war, where he met Joanna working in an engravery shop. After they married, they moved to Door County where Charles had been appointed harbormaster, charged with supervising commercial fishing operations in Sturgeon Bay. He worked from dawn until dusk six days a week, and everyone on the docks called him “Chief.” “He’s a good man, Miss Lucchese,” Evelyn said, “He knows every last thing about boats.” “What about you? How did you come to be Jo’s nanny?” “Well, the ladies at the Methodist church helped Mr. Charles after Jo was born, but he wanted a nurse here all the time. At night, mostly, so he could rest.” She went on to say how the church sent word of this need to other congregations, and a Milwaukee pastor knew Evelyn from his former pastorate in Elgin. She had practical nurse

training and had worked at children’s shelters since she was a teen. I guessed she was about thirty years old. “Do you ever read to Jo?” “Yes ma’am, children’s Bible stories mostly. She sits still for it, but she don’t seem very amused.” “Does Mr. Durant have any boating books, books about ropes and knots?” “I believe he does, ma’am.” I asked Evelyn to gather any books with knot-tying diagrams, so I could test Jo’s ability to learn from pictures. I returned the next day with some threefoot sections of braided rope from the hardware store, and Evelyn showed me a collection of nautical guides, repair manuals, and an early edition of the Boy Scout Handbook. I visited Jo every day for the first week and watched her learn every knot in the Scout handbook. She mastered them in just one or two attempts, and quickly learned their names. There was no limit to how many times I could ask her to tie a clove hitch, joining knot or bowline — she

would eagerly comply. Evelyn told me she spent hours in her room with the ropes, tying them to the table legs and the dolls and her bed frame, even creating combinations of knots and variations that weren’t pictured in any book. One evening in July, around six o’clock, I received a telephone call at the Bethel Hotel. “Miss Lucchese, this is Evelyn.” “Hello Evelyn, and please, call me Rita.” “Yes, Miss Rita. Ma’am, it’s about Jo. I think you should come over here and see this.” I walked over to the Durant house immediately, and Jo was in the kitchen with her hands covered with something sticky and red. Expression: Animation that Moves Us

Illustrating the Point by Scott Barnes The power of storytelling isn’t always apparent. The effect of narrative, in large part, goes unnoticed in day to day life. People move through traffic, attend meetings and complete tasks in hopes that they will have soon have some free time. Generally, people tend to be dragged around by life rather than living it; they have little time to contemplate how things became the way they are.

Contemporary science is beginning to understand something that our ancestors knew well: words shape our perception of reality. Every generation prior to this one has passed down wisdom and culture through a myriad of mediums, various religions, governing bodies and political influence. Film, music, literature and art have all played a role in creating the social norms of contemporary society.

The conversation quieted and host Mike Toomey took the stage. Charming and humorous, he set an enjoyable tone and the first film was presented.

The power of storytelling has found its way into the vocabulary of psychology, sociology, spiritual teachings, marketing and many “soft” sciences. To fully comprehend the spectrum of research into how narrative has shaped people and communities would be a lengthy and exhausting endeavor. It is much easier to recognize when such things impact us in obvious ways.

Slowly but surely, everybody filed into the theater, finding their seats and getting settled in. As we all got comfortable, I took a few moments to meditate and clear my mind.

Each film affected me in a different way. I took in the feelings and evaluated the concepts. I plugged them into the database of my mind and incorporated them into my own narrative. I personalized and internalized the characters presented and the struggles they face. I wondered where these filmmakers found their inspiration. Why they chose to focus on certain topics, and why they

presented them the way that they did. I found myself curious about the lives they lead. Where they come from. What they’re about. One film, in particular, struck me deeply. It also happened to be the movie that took the prize. “Starting Point,” an animated short directed by Kamel Altamimi, won the judges’ vote. It is an inspiring story that explores the power of loss and the strength to overcome. Watching this film brought me to an emotional place. I reflected on the recent passing of my mother as I watched the “Oryx” separate this child and her parent. The process of losing a loved one is beautifully illustrated as the child chases after her mother. The young, animated girl faces adversity with courage and determination. I found myself admiring her ability to be bold. As she weaved through

monuments of dark, frozen, stagnate statues searching for some sort of salvation, I thought of all the seemingly robotic people I see marching through blue collar, monotonous lives.

Over the weeks following the festival on September 21st, I had the privilege of getting to know Altamimi. I learned that he also values the power of storytelling and the effect of narrative. A Saudi born filmmaker, Altamimi was inspired to create “Starting Point” in part by the Arab Spring Uprising that took place in many Muslim countries

nearly a decade ago. He was inspired by the meaning behind what started the movement, and affected by the heartbreak that followed. The vision of “Starting Point” came more clearly into focus when Altamimi came across images captured in “Impressions of Arabia” a book from French photographer Thierry Mauger. In short, the story is about having faith in a world that is going through a lot of painful changes. It is about understanding those changes on a personal level. is unavoidable. Perhaps the most beautiful thing about this short is its ability to arrest and touch the heart. Taking two years to complete, and a team of talented people including Nick Schliep (assistant cleanup and color fills), Brandon Liew (musician) and Ryan Sullivan (sound design), “Starting Point” feels like victory in many ways. Altamimi has dreamed of being a filmmaker since his childhood, and this award-winning film establishes his credibility as an up and coming artist that deserves attention. Altamimi grew up in Riyadh and spent his formative years in Saudi Arabia before attending private school at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. He received training at the Cartoon Network Training Academy in the United Arab Emirates before accepting an internship at Cartoon Network Arabia studios in Abu Dhabi. He then traveled to America on a government scholarship to attend DePaul University in Chicago where he became a student mentor and held lectures focused on animation.

“Starting Point” may have taken 24 months to produce but it was a personal story that built up over many years, culminating in a beautifully crafted, palatable, animated short film that found its way to an appreciative audience and an award. I appreciate the fact that I live in a community that is passionate about art, and that I can share my passion with fellow residents. The Elgin Short Film Festival has been steadily growing for over a decade, and I am excited to see what it brings to the forefront in its 12th year.
