Church on the Rock Photography by

Steve Sturgill My love of photography began when I moved to Arizona in 1999. You learn to truly appreciate the beauty of nature when you are surrounded by the spectacular scenery in Sedona, Monument Valley, The Grand Canyon and Saguaro National Park. I recall purchasing a Canon Rebel before my first trip to the Grand Canyon. My hope was to take a part of this incredible wonder of nature home with me. As with most artists, I was influenced by many of the great photographers of yesterday and today. Among them are Ansel Adams, Thomas Mangelsen, and Peter Lik. Each of these artists have the incredible ability to replicate the beauty of nature through their camera. This is what I strive for — to bring you as close as possible to the feeling of actually being there. Moving back to the Midwest in 2003, along with a trip to Italy, helped me realize that there is natural beauty in every corner of the world and that we must take the time to appreciate it. I hope that my photos encourage you to get out and see this beautiful world that we live in. To see more of Steve’s work, go to:

Certain phenomena of life must be experienced first-hand in order to be truly felt and believed. A few come to mind: love, happiness, tragedy, loss, ... and ghosts? Science tells us “energy is neither created or destroyed. It can only be changed from one form to another” (Einstein). Water demonstrates this principle in a most observable way. Depending on the situation — heat, cold, humidity — water becomes solid, liquid or vapor. Following this logic, it makes sense that the spirit or soul of a person lives on after death, whatever form it may take. Obviously, no one has come back from the dead to confirm or deny this theory. Free of the cumbersome, sometimes miserable burden of having a physical body, what happens to the ephemeral spirit upon its release from the physical bond? Do our thoughts and feelings perish with our physical selves? The question has been debated for as long as humans have existed. Naysayers may scoff at the idea of ghosts and spirits, claiming such ideas are for the foolish and gullible. What do you think? Have you ever seen, heard, felt, or smelled something you couldn’t explain rationally? No? Then perhaps these Elgin tales will leave you shivering in doubt ...

Fun, Food & Spirits Our first tale begins at Smitty’s Olde Towne Inn, Elgin’s oldest bar. Situated off Route 20 on Bluff City Boulevard and Grace Street, its industrial setting and proximity to the Fox River Bike Trail make it an intriguing destination. You

can feel the weight of Elgin’s history in this part of town. According to the owner, Patsy Maple, William’s (Bill) father built the place in 1927, and it operated as a BBQ restaurant to serve the local working population. Although BBQ was the original offering at Smitty’s, he managed to secure the second liquor license in Illinois. Legend has it, said Maple, that “Bill began serving liquor the minute Prohibition was lifted!” Bill, Jr. and his second wife, Millie, ran the bar. Currently, Smitty’s Olde Towne Inn holds the state’s oldest operating liquor license. Maple bought the place from its previous owner in the

summer of 2015. New to the bar business but tired of the advertising world, Maple was ready to try her hand at running Smitty’s. Little did she suspect she would soon have an invisible business partner or two. “It all started with the renovations,”said Maple. Even though she claims she is “not an active believer,” the episodes she and her staff have experienced leave room for doubt. At first, “[T]hings like glassware started sliding off the bar.” Then unexplained events

was playing her favorite song! At that point, Maple decided to call in the paranormal investigators.

The Audiophile’s Playground

Eerily enough, the investigators picked up some key information. The spirit voices that came through were “Millie” and “Bill.” The other message was that Millie didn’t like the way Maple redecorated the place. Maple said, “It’s still their place,” and is respectful as she can be. For instance, she kept the original bar, a hand-hewn beauty that would be impossible to replicate.

began to happen in the kitchen, a hot-spot of activity. There is a bread shelf that sits next to a short wall to separate the area from the upstairs kitchen and the stairway leading to the basement, which houses a downstairs kitchen. For some reason, bread randomly leaps from the shelf and falls down the stairs to the basement. Mind you, this shelf sits below the wall, a distance of a foot or so. It defies physics that bread could crawl over the wall on its own power. It’s happened multiple times and been witnessed by many a staff member. In fact, one employee refuses to use the bread shelf any longer. Another strange event was the night the stoplight decoration flew off the wall and over the bar, knocking over four bar stools at the same time. The stoplight is about the same size as any standard stoplight, so it’s not a small object, and barstools? All at once? Maple tried to rationalize it by thinking a semi-truck rattled the wall and floor, but she didn’t say it with much conviction. She admitted it “didn’t make much sense.” But the illuminating moment for her came the day she heard her name called. She thought it was her cook, but no one was in the kitchen when she went to investigate. The very next day, at 10 in the morning, some force pushed her so hard she landed on her knees. Then, when one of the bartenders came into work that same day, the jukebox began playing on its own. It happened to be the one-year anniversary of the death of the bartender’s father. The jukebox

Cemeteries are the final resting place, it is said. Are they? Mike Smith, President of Afterlife Tours, tells a different story. He regularly leads tours through Bluff City Cemetery and has encountered plenty of evidence that not all the dead are resting. Ever respectful of the dearly departed, Smith donates a portion of the proceeds from tours to the City of Elgin for the express purpose of preservation and restoration of deteriorating graves. Established in 2016, the fund has raised at least $4,000.00 so far. Elgin’s dead were not always respected. During several expansions of gravesites, some of the dead remained buried and forgotten without a stone to their name. The most well-known, of course, is Channing Park and school. When the school was built (circa 1960), construction crews found skeletal remains and rotted coffins. The crew were ordered to go ahead and pour the concrete foundation anyway. Identities of the dead were difficult if not impossible to trace. Rumor has it there are still unburied dead on the property. Smith, however, focuses his energy on Bluff City because of its history and beauty, not only for its spirit activity. The tools of choice are very simple — a pair of dowsing rods and simple questioning. It’s better to use questions that require “yes” or “no” answers, said Smith. From Smith’s perspective, the most active area is the children’s section near Bluff Spring Fen, a spring-fed, wetland area. Many died during the influenza epidemic that raged across America during 1916-1919. World War I soldiers unknowingly carried the virus with them when they re-

turned home. Sadly, many children succumbed to the disease, as did adults. Smith believes some of the children buried here were victims of influenza. There are several spirits who communicate with guides from Afterlife Tours. Smith said there are about four children who are “regulars” on the tours. He thinks “they are lonely” and even claims they “give hugs by using the rods.” A young boy named Robert likes to engage the dowsing rods and spin them around, clockwise and counterclockwise. Another spirit calls herself Sarah and says she is six years old. Sarah likes to show people where her tombstone is, but it’s difficult to read anything on the eroded surface of the flat stone.

plot. Apparently, there are some who are not resting easy. The ghost hunter leading the tour had different types of equipment to capture voices and images. The EVP device captured some chilling responses: “What are you doing here?” “Rape.” “Kill.” “Cut.” “Murder.” As the group left the graveyard, a rock came flying out of nowhere and slammed into the gate. Smith is unlikely to return there any time soon. Afterlife Tours does not wish to provoke the spirits in any manner. Anyone who tries to aggravate the spirits will be banished from the tour. Their philosophy is to be respectful, ask for permission to speak with the spirit(s), promote education, and learn more about history.

That’s not always the case with other cemeteries. Once, Smith, then a paying customer, was touring the Elgin State Hospital graveyard. Patients buried here were either unclaimed or came from poverty-stricken families that couldn’t afford a burial

Since then, the children are grown, and the ghosts remain a part of their family stories from the past. Yet to the present day, distant, unintelligible voices are heard occasionally. Whatever or whoever these spirits are, their intent is not malicious in any way. The family has no fear of being harmed by the entities who stay close to the old neighborhood. Back in March, I spoke with Frank Sibr, co-owner of Bricks Pizza in downtown Elgin, about the spirit world. We shared a few stories, and I had hoped to talk to him later in the year about this article. Sadly, Sibr passed away from natural causes earlier this summer, so I never got a chance to continue our conversation. Before he died, he knew of my intention

BRAVO

to do a formal interview with him; therefore, I feel he would approve of my sharing his story with BRAVO readers. Sibr was living in the upper storey of Bricks. Of course, a lot of rehab was going on in conjunction with the restaurant downstairs. For some reason, every time Sibr shut his bedroom door, something (someone?) would open the door. This happened every single time he kept the door shut. It may have been a hallway before, and whoever lingers there wants to keep it that way. Sibr was no stranger to the spirit world, and in his opinion, the “ghosts are very content” in Elgin. His statement gives me comfort because I experienced a little weirdness myself. While interviewing Mike Smith of Afterlife Tours, my digital recorder’s batteries drained, so I had to continue without using the device. The batteries were more than 75% full when I began recording our conversation. After I returned home, I went to replace the drained batteries with new ones. Guess what? The battery indicator read 75%. Believe it ... or not. —DT

As the play opens, everyone is awaiting the arrival of Homer Bolton and his fiancée,

Myrtle Brown. They are engaged, but this is the first time anyone in the family will have met her. When they finally arrive, Homer’s father, Carl, is frightened that he will not make a good impression, has one of his “spells” and is kept out of sight for the time being. Homer has no real desire to marry, in spite of the fact that his father has built and furnished a house, which has been sitting empty for some years, that will be his when and if he does marry. Myrtle is beginning to wonder if she has waited long enough. The play is staged by Crystal Lake’s RCLPC Theater and presented by Elgin’s Independent Players as part of a reciporical arrangement. It runs for three weekends, September 27 through October 12, with shows on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 pm at the Elgin Art Showcase, 164 Division Street in downtown Elgin. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $10 for students, available and independentplayers.org or at the door prior to each performance. For reservations or more information, call (847) 697-7374.

Old School Shakespeare The latest effort from the Elgin Shakespeare Project of Janus Theatre Company is the classic Macbeth, the story of the troubled rise and reign of a cursed King of Scotland. Performed in the rehabbed warehouse now known as Imago Creative Studios, and billed as “serious actors, no director, one rehearsal,” it promises to be raw acting in its purest form. Janus is known for creating up close and intimate performances with limited seating. Incredibly, this show has no admission price — pay what you can afford, or see it for free. Macbeth will be performed for two nights, October 21-22 at Imago, 216 Prairie Street in downtown Elgin. For more information, go to janusplays.com. See you there ...

Dark Matters The Dark Matters 24-Hour Horror Film Challenge is a fast-paced experience where filmmakers are challenged to create a complete short-horror film within an amazingly short amount of time, all the while networking with other artists, creating a new and exciting experience, and pushing themselves to the extreme. From classic slasher to found footage, Dark Matters opens itself to any and all thirsting to create and dying to tell their story. The crews will start Friday, October 4th and must have their films ready for a premiere screening on Saturday, October 5th, at 6pm. The film screenings are open the public, with a $5 suggested donation at the door, at Side Street Studio Arts, 15 Ziegler Court. For information go to sidestreetstudioarts.org

Spotlight on 2019 Public Artists Float by Margie Criner Born in Detroit in 1968, Margie Criner resides in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. Her art combines architectural and geometric forms with play. Criner’s paintings begin as abstractions of her three-dimensional sculptural work. Her background in design and woodworking enable Criner to utilize a variety of materials. She received a Bachelor of Science in Textile Design from Michigan State University in 1991 and has exhibited her work in galleries and art centers throughout the

United States. Her work will soon be at the WNDR Museum in Chicago and the Rockford Art Museum in Rockford, Illinois. “The inspiration behind this piece is the geographical location of Elgin, sitting along the Fox River. The Fox River serves to connect communities. Float is informed by the notion that we are all connected. The abstraction of boat shapes used in the work is my expression of diversity and individuality. The palette is intended to offer a sense lightness, an ease similar to what it might feel like floating on calm water.” You can see Float on the intersection of Highland Avenue and Riverside Drive in downtown Elgin.

Its colors, cyan and magenta, are two of the four colors used to print consumer packaging-yellow and black are the others. The dazzling forms allude to Midwestern landscapes which have been altered for industrial or agricultural purposes. Unlike camouflage, which is meant to conceal, my pattern is bright, loud, and designed to attract attention.”

Illinois and educated at Luther College, LeRoy’s work blends classic New Yorker cartoons with a contemporary twist.

The name Stanley Jordan may not be on the tip of every music fan’s tongue, but it should be. You might say he’s one of the three T’s. Among the most important innovators in the history of the electric guitar, there’s Les Paul for Technology, Jimi Hendrix for Tone, and Stanley Jordan for Technique. Born in Chicago and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jordan always loved music and switched from classical piano lessons to guitar around 1970, after hearing the music of Jimi Hendrix at the height (and end, sadly) of his career.

On the Marquee

STANLEY JORDAN

Conventional keyboard technique, combined with the rule-breaking approach to sound exemplified by Hendrix, were the basis for the two-handed tapping technique that eventually made Jordan famous.

Best known as a jazz artist, he embraces all sorts of styles and genres and has played renditions of Mozart, the Beatles and Katy Perry. “If you think of music as a room,” he told BRAVO, “each genre would be a window into that room. So you are seeing the same room, but from different angles.” It’s this holistic perspective that has always guided his choices for recording projects, collaborations and career moves. But the music always comes first. “There’s a belief that when you’re a musician, you’re supposed to want to be rich and famous,” he said in a 2011 biography, “I’ve never been like that ... I’d rather be musically satisfied.” The talent, and the fame that follows it, means Jordan can find an audience wherever he goes.

Connections exist between artists and audiences, and between composers and performers. As a musician with deep respect for the classics as well as modern-day standards, we asked Jordan whether his experience connecting with and performing the music of others was more related to its longevity, or its power to expand our consciousness in the present. “Music puts me in a state of total bliss,” he said. “We grow spiritually through mindfulness, and music brings that about because it makes the moment so amazing that we can’t be anywhere else. I try to share that experience with others.” He believes that when a person discovers their true calling, they come to see themselves in some kind of service capacity. The joy of experiencing one’s fully realized human potential evokes gratitude and generosity. It’s been called self-actualization, a state of flow, or “paying it forward.”

“One of the main reasons I got interested in jazz was from listening to [Hendrix] ... I came to realize that the sky is the limit, that there’s no upper level to the content of the music,” he told Guitar World.

Equipped with a music degree from Princeton, he went to New York where he was discovered playing guitar on the street. That led to appearances at international jazz festivals, and then his breakthrough 1985 album Magic Touch, which topped the jazz charts for 51 weeks.

5.10

“I have felt a calling to help others ever since I was quite young — I think it’s programmed into my soul’s code,” he confided. “I feel a strong desire to bring my music to the people not just for entertainment, but also for inspiration and healing.”

“I enjoy the freedom to play any type of music that I like,” he told BRAVO. “But if I decide to perform a song, I have to feel that my performance brings something special to the song. It could be a new idea or it could just be a special energy.” Having developed an affection for Brazil over the years, Jordan incorporates Latin genres into his repertoire and often collaborates with Brazilian virtuoso guitarist Diego Figueiredo. The two will appear together as a duo at the ECC Arts Center this month. Though English and Portuguese are not mutually intelligible spoken languages, their musical counterparts are. “You can think of genres as different dialects — or different languages entirely — but either way, they are saying the same things,” he said. Moreover, “I believe that music can say things

that can’t be said in words — I experience that every day.” We have often written in this space about music as communication, and Jordan offers his own evidence in describing the dynamics of this musical duo. “Diego is extremely talented and creative, and he’s a great spirit, and I always feel that we have a really great connection when we play together. It really makes it effortless.”

The sincerity of that desire has led to his extensive and ongoing academic and clinical work in music therapy, a professional discipline that uses music to improve physical, emotional and cognitive functions in patients. When asked how he might integrate his music career with a music therapy practice, he said “I don’t have any limits on it currently — I want to see where it leads.”

Performing on stage, alone or with a partner, wasn’t always easy for him.

For now, you can connect with Stanley Jordan, sharing the stage with Diego Figueiredo, on Saturday, October 19th at 7pm in the newly renovated Blizzard Theatre at the ECC Arts Center. Tickets are just $34.

“I was kind of a shy kid,” he admitted. “There were many times when I would rather stay home alone and practice than go onstage and perform because I could more easily focus on the music without the distraction of the social element. But eventually the music helped me to connect with people.”

Thinking about the show, he told us “We do a lot of cool stuff together, but we also have our individual solo sections, and when he’s doing his solo, I just sit at the side of the stage in awe and just savor every note! I think we will follow this format in Elgin as well and I’m looking forward to that.” —JP

Did You Know... Pet Ownership is Healthy? Anderson’s Walk4Animals isn’t just another fun event hosted by Anderson Animal Shelter. It’s an event in October to celebrate pet-lovers who understand just how much better life is when you have an animal. Whether you have five pets in your home, or just love seeing your neighbor's dog at the bus stop while getting your kids off to school, research has shown that these interactions have the power to make your life better. The American Heart Association published a scientific statement in 2013 that recognized particularly dog ownership - as a factor in reducing the risk of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. Several studies done with pet-owners and non pet-owners showed that pet-owners had lower systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, mean arterial pressure and a reduced risk of high blood pressure. Researchers also found that “the other important role that pets play in human health is social support, which is one of the most powerful predictors of adoption and maintenance of behavior change, including weight loss.” At Anderson Animal Shelter, stories are consistently shared by adopters of a new found motivation to get outside and walk their dogs, leading to healthy behaviors, weight loss and a more positive emotional outlook. Anderson Animal Shelter offers several opportunities to experience and celebrate the human-animal bond. Those who know first-hand about all the positive things that come from having furry family members understand that life is better together! All are invited to Anderson's Walk4Animals in October to positively impact your health while celebrating your relationship with your pet. supported by

Side Street Studio Arts The artist educators at Side Street Studio Arts (SSSA) offer programs year round for all ages, in a wide range of visual arts media. Classes and meetups are held in a nicely equipped art studio and most materials are furnished. Artist Internship Program This ten-hour/week professional practice program is designed to find and explore different entrepreneurship and artistic methods. Interns create CVs, biographies, exhibit/production proposals, artist statements/personal narratives, and statements of purpose, learning the unique content and purposes of each. An exhibition or production will be created from an ongoing archive of the artist’s work. With the guidance of Side Street Studio Arts’ Directors, artists will explore best practices for managing, editing, and installing work. Artist-Internships are open to artists of all media and are

highly individualized to ensure that each artist grows in the skills necessary for their particular practice and future goals. See below for application information. Arts Administration Interns The brand new Arts Administration Internship Program at Side Street Studio Arts will provide hands-on immersion in the daily operations of a growing arts organization in downtown Elgin. Interns will work closely with SSSA staff to have a rare opportunity to be immersed in many types of projects and work experiences, including event production, arts education, non-profit business management, and much more. These positions are best suited for those interested in exploring arts education, gallery management, performance/exhibition production, arts administration, or nonprofit management careers. Interns will work both on and off-site for a minimum of 10 hours a week for 6 to 12 months,. This internship is flexible and can be scheduled to accommodate other commitments and varying time frames. A $500-$1000 stipend is provided, as well as additional opportunities to earn money through teaching and/or other arts exhibitions and performance opportunities. See below for application information. Artist-in-Residence Program Side Street Studio Arts’ Artist-in-Residence program fosters the work environment, mentorship, and self-promotion skills needed for an artist with an existing body of work to realize a project or idea as an exhibition, show, or complete piece. Artist residencies are focused on individualized attention and flexibility. Designed ad hoc for each individual artist, residences range from several weeks to one year and include studio time to work in Side Street’s gallery space, individualized mentorship with artists in the Chicago area, instruction in self-promotion and portfolio development, and hands-on experience in arts administration. Artists in Residence are immersed in Side Street’s artist community by volunteering for gallery events, leading workshops and classes, and making connections with Side Street’s extensive artist

21

network. Application Information To be considered for any of the above opportunities, you will typically need to submit a resume/CV, samples of your work, an artist statement, and a proposal for your internship or residency experience. Complete details on each of these applications is found online at sidestreetstudioarts. org, under links for Education or Jobs.

“Elgin” Bags Recalled Amid Controversy

“We feel the bags are still a great product, but since we can’t control how they are used, it’s best that we cut off the supply for now,” said Noel Hernandez, Vice President of Communications. Though initial sales were slow due to the higher $9.99

More photos appeared, showing the Bev-Mart bags creatively arranged to spell less innocuous terms, in which the purple validation stickers were

placed carefully on the bags to create the letter T from I, and letters C and U from L. One scene depicted revelers with a row of bags that spelled GETTIN LIT; another popular photo showed three women next to a set of bags that spelled GIN N TGNIC NITE. Sales of the bags spiked in the weeks that followed and customer demand often exceeded individual store supplies. Problems started when two photos were posted on Facebook showing the bags arranged to spell ILLEGEL and GET IN LINE. The poster did not explain the photos, nor respond to comments. Both appear to have been taken at a single unidentifed location. Things escalated rapidly until police and firefighters were called to an address on the west side, where a row of leaf-filled

Humor and/or Satire bags had been set on fire in a residential front yard. According to eyewitnesses, they spelled L GENTE E UN ENTE EN ELGIN. An anonymous police source familiar with the incident told Faque News that the troubles were confined to just two properties, which had very large lots and many hardwood trees. Both homeowners claimed they were out of town at the time. No charges were filed. The meaning of the message remains unclear, as “La gente es un ente en Elgin” can be translated as “The people are an entity in Elgin” or “The people are an oddity in Elgin.” Bev-Mart is offering a full refund for any unused Elgin bags, and will replace them with unprinted bags at no cost. “We are doing our best to be good neighbors in this situation,” added Hernandez. “We are extremely proud to serve the Elgin area and welcome everyone to visit our stores.”

Shared Values: Happiness Taking Flight

The Five Bats of Happiness by Jennifer Bowden In the autumn, we begin to see spooky images: skeletons, webs, spiders, and bats. These images are mainly intended to get folks in the fun but slightly “spooky” mood of Halloween celebrations. The autumnal ritual of costumes, ridiculous amounts of candy, and possibly other types of mischief include images that may elicit fear or repulsion. Little furry critters that fly around and “see” by emitting sounds are possibly a bit unnerving. Most of us do think of bats as “creatures of the night.” We don’t have vampire bats in the Midwest nor do we even have any big bats, however

our popular mythology that probably dates back to farm living is the warning about “a bat can get tangled up in your hair!” As unlikely as that event certainly is — its still not a nice thought! When we explore different symbols in the East versus the West there are often charming surprises with thought provoking ideas behind them. In Chinese tradition the bat is considered an auspicious symbol of good fortune. The word for bat sounds like the word for “fortune” or “happiness” in Chinese. In kitchens, living rooms, and restaurants, one will see the symbol of five bats rep-

resenting the five happinesses: Old age, Prosperity, Good Health, the Love of Virtue and finally a peaceful non-violent death. Five Bat motifs are often included in decorations for birthdays, and other happy occasions. The first bat of happiness is “old age.” It is more common to refer to this as “ long life” or “longevity” in American culture, but achieving old age is seen as a great happiness from the ancient Chinese perspective. Western culture is perpetually fixated on youthfulness, but it is empowering to remember that it is achieving old age that is truly a great blessing. The second bat is the happiness of “good health.” In traditional Chinese practices there is a great emphasis on moderation and temperance in promoting the state of harmony that will optimize excellent health. In the crowded parks of populous Chinese cities early in the morning, one can witness octogenarians practicing tai chi and qi gung. Qi gung and meditation are mainly associated in the Western mind with the bat of maintain-

ing health. These slow moving and controlled exercise forms promote the inner circulation of energy and allow the organ systems to interact smoothly with each other. “Good health” would of course in many cases be linked to long life! Good health and total well-being are supported by the eight branches of traditional Chinese medicine which include: acupuncture and moxabustion, herbal medicine, feng shui, cosmology, tui na (traditional bodywork, cupping, skin scraping, massage), food energetics (nutritional healing), meditation, and qi gung. The eight branches of Chinese Medicine are actually used to support all the bats of happiness. The number eight itself is considered quite auspicious in Chinese culture. It is even believed that through cosmology and the choosing of auspicious dates to begin certain endeavors, that great wealth and the likelihood of a natural death can be achieved. In traditional Chinese culture, health is not necessarily associated with prominently developed muscles, but rather a tranquil

mind, harmonious organ systems, and temperate living. The third bat, Prosperity, is of course an important bat of happiness, and in the Western mind it sometimes seems to take the foreground. In the traditional belief system that first articulated the five bats of happiness, individual prosperity was tightly interwoven with well-being of the individual in the context of the family and believed to be the result of virtuous living. The Bats of Happiness really cannot be separated. They Art by Samaya Bowden. fly together. The fourth bat is “the love of virtue.” The implication is that to be a person of good character is in and of itself a great happiness. To actually love doing good is a valuable facet of living in a harmonious and happy state. It has been said by various philosophers of success and achievement that doing good and worthwhile endeavors are linked with success overall. Our motivations are indeed important to our outcomes! The final Bat of Happiness is linked to a topic we often hide from. The idea of a “good death.” One version of the Five Bats calls for the happiness of a “non-violent death,” other

translations call this Bat “a peaceful death.” My preferred rendition is “a natural death.” We live in a time of great medical marvels that can prolong life well beyond what could have taken place even twenty years ago. This Bat that draws our attention to the final experience of this life; it is hard to think about yet deeply important. If we are blessed to reach old age the final happiness of a good and natural death becomes deeply valuable.

There are Five Bats and the number five is significant as well. In the Daoist roots that are the deepest original terrain of Chinese philosophy and Chinese Healing Arts, the number Five is the number associated with the human experience. The Taiji (popularly called the Yin and Yang symbol) is often seen in decor and many people are familiar with the idea of duality and interdependence, however beyond the Taiji (the duality) is the idea that Five Elements make up all of our physical reality on earth. These Five Elements — Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and

47

Wood — are believed to create and control each other in never ending interdependent cycles. The number Five represents the basis of material that is the result of the Yang of the Spirit world spiraling into the solid Yin of the earthly world. In European and North American culture we encounter the idea of Health, Wealth and Wisdom as being greatly valued. The five Bats really are universal life blessings that cross cultures. Health, Wealth and Wisdom are grand things to experience in this life — however long life, with the good health and wealth to enjoy it, accompanied by a love of virtue that enables us to create deep bonds with other people and finally a peaceful transition out of this life are a beautiful structure of “happinesses”. When you see a bat in the sky remember that it represents a Bat of Happiness! If a window is decorated with bat silhouettes, resonate with “the Five Bats of Happiness!” It’s all just a matter of perspective. The Innercraft

The Rumors of the Death of Your Art Have Been Greatly Exaggerated by Michael J. Murschel, SD In this hauntingly charming month of October, what could be better than an open discussion about Death. Specifically the “Death of Your Art.” Or, at least, your “perception of its passing.”

Let me back up for a moment. Several years ago, I acquired the text of an obscure 400 page book, published in London, England in 1896, with second edition in 1905, with the compelling title, Premature Burial and How It May Be Prevented.

them by doing something which prohibits our ever being able to resurrect them. This can result in deep and profound feelings of grief, because losing your art is a death of sorts; the death of a major part of who you are. And the wall of that tomb prevents you from becoming all which you were intended to be.

H’mmm … So, here’s the thing. We often believe our art has died when we encounter barriers to it, such as writer’s block, loss of inspiration, or challenges to our abilities. When left unaddressed, these suspicions of loss of creativity on our part can lead to us burying our abilities before they are dead. Or worse yet, cremating

But, thankfully, for most people, their art is not dead, but merely sleeping. There are techniques to break through and reconnect. Next month, we’ll discuss some of those techniques. As someone who works to get people out of cycles of grief and back to a new form of wholeness, I have a lot of methods to jump-start that process, several of which I will detail then.

As late as 1905, many parts of the Western world did not provide embalming, and even then, the prospect of being “embalmed while not yet dead” was very real in the minds of many. Cholera, catalepsy, and other forms of “suspended animation” could easily mask themselves as death and that truly terrified people across the Western world. In addition to waiting three or more days before burying or entombing someone, this book mentions all sorts of physiological tests to make certain they were most sincerely dead. Even ensuring that one was dead by having them cremated.

side, the cold marble and cool air reflects another level of being. To be in there, with no hope of getting out, and yet to see life going on just through those doors, that must be what the loss of artistic drive feels like. Alive on the outside, yet dead within.

In the meanwhile, if you’d like to share with me any questions about any of this to be addressed next time, please contact me at: michael.murschel@opusmente. com.

Artists in every artistic discipline all hit dry spells. Very scary places, often filled with … nothing. Silence. Darkness. Loneliness. Years ago, I took a photograph from the inside of a locked mausoleum, looking past the wall crypts to the scroll windowed bronze doors. Outside those windows, the world goes on, bright sunshine cascading across the green leaves of summer. But in-

BRAVO Serial Fiction: “The Good Catch”

Part One:

Case Work by Jeffrey R. Pierce I have always been fascinated by childhood, and disinterested in motherhood. As a girl, I was preoccupied with trying to understand my own personality, as if there was something wrong with it. When I outgrew childhood, the only thing I could think to do with myself was become a teacher, so I enrolled in the Milwaukee State Teachers College.

I was intrigued by educational theories, particularly those based on psychology, but by the time I graduated in the Spring of 1942, I realized I took no pleasure in lecturing at the blackboard, checking arithmetic problems, reading essays and marking report cards. Yet I wanted to know everything about the mind of a child, and how to feed it. I had read about the new field of school psychology and decided I should become a school psychologist. With no further financial help from my parents, I spent my modest savings on another semester of tuition at the College studying psychology, and it was to be my last time as a formal student for many more years. Faced with a lack of funds and a creeping, restless desire to make a difference in the world, I left the College and sought work in the educational system. There were no positions in school psychology in Milwaukee or anywhere else in Wisconsin, but through the State Department of Education I learned of an opening in Door County for a person with my training. They needed a case worker in the county’s Social Services Department, and the office staff told me the main case involved an unusual little girl who had language and learning impair-

ments, but was not otherwise retarded. I applied for the job and was hired without an interview. When I met my supervisor for the first time she smirked and said to me, “You must be Rita Lucchese. The state office said you’d be the most Jewish-looking girl in Sturgeon Bay.” Though I disapproved of the remark, I pretended to laugh, then followed her into her office and took a seat in front of her desk. She asked me to tell a little about myself. “Well I’m not Jewish. I was born and raised Roman Catholic in St. Boniface Parish in Milwaukee. As you might guess, my father is Italian, he’s a barber by trade, my mother is German, and I’m the fifth of seven brothers and sisters.” She went over my qualifications and then quickly got to the specifics of my assignment. “We have a special little girl Jo, age six. Her mother died during labor and Jo had ... a complicated birth. She doesn’t speak and she has peculiar tendencies, but we’d like to get her into school.” “Is she an orphan? In an institution?” “No, she lives at home with her father and a nurse.” She handed me a redrope folder full of papers and a few photographs, and told me to plan on spending a few hours every day on Jo’s case, and more would come along. “So are you all settled in?” she asked, “Do you have a place to stay?” “I took a room at the Bethel Hotel.”

BRAVO

October 2019

“Oh good, then I’ll call Evelyn in the morning and tell her you’ll see Jo around ten o’clock.” The Bethel Hotel was really just a women’s boarding house, with eight small sleeping rooms and a shared bath on each floor, and kitchen privileges. For an extra nine dollars per month one could get a hot breakfast five days a week and a hot supper every Wednesday, cooked by Mrs. Sorenson, the widow who ran the hotel. It was no better or worse than the dormitory at the College, except the women who lived there weren’t the least bit scholarly. They were mostly singles in their twenties or thirties, though a few had husbands or fiancés serving abroad. Almost all of them worked at a nearby cannery packing fish for military provisions. I’m sure I seemed boring and prudish with my plain dresses and satchel full of books. On my first Friday in the house, they found great amusement in trying to corrupt me with beer, cigarettes and card games. Sturgeon Bay was not a large town. As it happened, the Bethel was just a few blocks from the Durant residence. At 10:00 the following morning I rang the bell there, and a welldressed Negro woman answered the door. She looked down at a slip of paper and said, “Are you Miss ... Rita Lucchese?”

shut. “That’s Jo’s room. But before I take you in there, you need to know a few things.” She told me about Jo’s parents, Charles Durant and his wife Joanna, a woman ten years younger than him. Joanna had a difficult pregnancy and died from a stroke during labor. The baby was delivered by Caesarean section in breech position and survived, but the doctor feared that her blood circulation was restricted for a time. Jo developed normally, except she would not make any sound except for crying, and she seemed to be terribly afraid of electric light. “She can’t talk?” I asked. “No, ma’am, but she can use the potty, dress herself, and eat with a fork and a spoon. She likes spaghetti.” Jo’s room was clean but drab, with a bed, a small table and chair, and a toy box containing mostly naked dolls with knots in their hair. Fastened directly to the wall was a framed picture

Not everyone takes recreational drives through local cemeteries, but I’m an amateur genealogist so I do. It was on one such trip through the Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin that we drove past Section 15.

Near the edge of the road was a large juniper. The afternoon light was fading but I could just make out a tiny marker at the base of the tree. We stopped and I walked over to the grave. At close range I saw something remarkable. “Look! The tree is swallowing up the headstone!”

Inf. Son Of F. & V. Kauffman July 16 1922 “He never even got a name.” I began to look at other markers. Most of the ones I could see dated from the early 1920s. Some were stillborn babies. Others lived only a few days or weeks. All were single infant graves with no other family members interred nearby. This was a place of sorrow, but at the same time it emanated a profound sense of peace and innocence. Driving home, we speculated how the tree came to surround the Kauffman baby’s stone. Did his mother and father choose his final resting place because a sapling was already growing there? Did they come back later to plant the tree as a memorial? Or did a bird simply drop a berry

into the soft earth of the new grave? At home, my thoughts kept returning to that lonely little grave. The genealogist in me was curious to find out more. Who were the parents? Did they have other children? What was their livelihood? They must have lived in or near Elgin circa 1920. I already knew the death date and surname of the child, so I started there. In the digitized sexton’s ledger for the Bluff City Cemetery I found an entry for the stillborn son of Fred and Valborg Kauffman on 16 July 1922. Building on that foundation, I accessed other online resources for more answers. Slowly I gathered enough details to paint an impressionistic picture of the Kauffman family. I looked next at the 1920 Federal Census. Fred W. Kauffman, 36, is listed as head of household on a farm in Rutland Township, Kane County, Illinois. He and his wife Valborg, 31, and three young daughters comprise the family unit. I began to search for earlier records. On the 1900 census I found 16-year-old Fred living and working as a laborer on his father’s dairy farm in Rutland. He was the oldest of five children born to German immigrants August and Bertha Kiekhoefer Kauffman. On February 16, 1910 Fred married his Danish bride Valborg Oman. He was 26; she 21. Shortly thereafter they must have left Illinois for South Dakota. They were renting farmland in Bretton Township, Hughes County by the time the census taker came calling in June of 1910. Their first few years of married life were eventful. Fred’s

mother Bertha died less than a month after the couple’s wedding. By that time Val had just become pregnant with their eldest daughter, who was born in November 1910. One source gives her birthplace as Huntley, Illinois. Fred’s father passed in 1913. Was August already in failing health when his first grandchild was born? If so, it might explain why the young Kauffman family moved back to Illinois after only a few months in South Dakota. Val bore three daughters before the 1920 census: Nina in 1910, Berniece about 1915 and Sylvia in 1917. In an era when many women gave birth at regular two-year intervals, might there be some significance to the four- or five-year gap between Nina and Berniece? Five more

years elapsed between Sylvia’s delivery and the stillbirth in 1922. Perhaps Val suffered one or more miscarriages before she was able to conceive again.

She must have been overjoyed when she felt new life once again quicken in her belly. pangs come too soon? Or was it not until her labor produced a silent child that she was forced to accept the cruel reality? The little grave in Section 15 was opened the next day. When the cemetery presented that new block to the Elgin City Council for approval in December 1910, plots were being offered for 15-20 cents per square foot. The Kauffman infant was probably buried for less than a dollar. By 1930 the family had left the farm and owned a home at 452 Jefferson Street in Elgin. Fred was then employed as a machinist at a gravel pit. The other household members were the same as in 1920: Valborg and three daughters. The stillborn baby in 1922 would have been the couple’s first and only son. Valborg died in 1939 without having borne any more children. Their son’s simple marker may have been set after Fred and Val were able to save enough money to pay the stone cutter. I like to think that a bird — perhaps a robin — perched on the stone and dropped the seed that became a juniper tree. Over the years, the energy that would have enabled a little boy to walk, run and play with his sisters was transformed into a different sort of life. The tree grew and thrived, drawing nourishment from the child cradled within its roots. Many generations of robins have nested in its branches,
