Shared Values: A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Won’t You Be My Neighbor? by Katie Shaw Thompson I have fond memories of watching Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood nearly every weekday on my grandmother’s big boxy television as a child. My sister and I would lay on the floor in front of the screen to watch as Mr. Rogers put on or took off his shoes and his button-down cardigan and to hear him sing “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor, would you be mine, could you be mine, won’t you be my neighbor?” As a parent, I was grateful to find “Daniel Tiger” on Netflix. With different eyes and different ears I took in the messages of this animated series with my children. Watching as an adult, I realized that I had been indoctrinated with a strong love ethic for my neighbor from a very early age just by being a regular watcher of Mr. Rogers. Indeed, sharing this message of love and belonging was Fred Rogers’ intended goal. When he realized how wide-reaching the then-new medium of television was and that the messages young viewers were receiving were not messages he found to be healthy or helpful, he got the idea for his own very different kind of show and Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood was born. In the trailer for the recent Focus Features documentary, Rogers can be heard saying of his iconic “Won’t you be my neighbor?” song, “I suppose it’s an invitation for somebody to be close to you.” Drawing that idea out further he says, “It’s the greatest thing we can do — to teach people that they are loved and capable of loving.” Neighbors is a general term I often use for other people inhabiting the same space as

my family. I often hear myself calling out to my children riding their bikes a little too carelessly down the sidewalk, “watch out for your neighbors.” This admonition comes out of my mouth often in reference to pedestrians in danger of being hit by my small child, to people waiting in line with us at the checkout, to other riders of public transit, and to folks of all ages at the playground. Yet, I have found that two humans sharing close physical proximity to each other does not necessarily mean we come close to each other in the way I now understand Fred Rogers to have used the term. As a four season bike commuter in our city, I have had the opportunity to come close to a number of people I may not have otherwise met if I were traveling through town in my Mazda hatchback. Experiencing more incidental interactions with my neighbors by putting my physical body either in the street on a bike or on foot on the sidewalk has given me plenty of opportunity to develop what sociologist Peggy Thoits calls “lighter relationships” or non-intimate social ties with mail carriers, shop owners, dog walkers, stroller-pushing grandparents, and weekend mechanics in my neighborhood. Thoits interviewed hundreds of people about the many social roles they played in life, both intimate and non-intimate, and what she discovered was that these lighter, non-intimate relationships mattered. She found that having a healthy level of lighter relationships “can boost feelings of self-esteem, mastery, and physical health.” In other words, talking about the weather with strangers on the bus and waving to neighbors across

the street is good for our overall health and the health of our more intimate relationships too. In Elgin, we are fortunate that so many of our neighborhoods were built on a historic, small, city grid, which affords us many more interactions to bump into our neighbors than suburban cul-de-sacs, which were designed to minimize such interactions. Of course coming close to each other physically is not always easy, comfortable, or without conflict as this magazine’s recent serial fiction “Victory Lane” reminded us. Being neighbors is risky as are all human relationships. The closer we come to each other, the more we risk. Peggy Thoits and Fred Rogers would argue though that the rewards for our health and happiness are well worth it.

Who is My Neighbor? However, to come close to each other in a way that teaches us that we are “loved and capable of loving” as Rogers so values, requires much more than sharing physical space. Although sharing physical space may tell me something about them, standing on the sidewalk next to my neighbor does not alone mean that I have shared enough with them to be said to have come close enough to understand much of how they view the world, what their challenges and triumphs may be, or how we may be able to help each other. Being that kind of neighbor requires taking some emotional risk in the form

of humility and vulnerability. It requires a willingness to see things from a different point of view and an openness to consider changing our own thoughts and behaviors. I wish I could say that more bike lanes, more people walking in their neighborhoods, and more people sitting on their front porches alone would bring neighbors in cities like Elgin closer together in ways that teach us we are loved and capable of loving. While it is true that more eyes on the street can lead to less crime, and it is true that better infrastructure can lead to fewer traffic fatalities, coming close to each other as good neighbors means more than that. It means caring about each other’s wellbeing and the wellbeing of our shared community enough to listen to each other with curiosity and kindness instead of judgment and defensiveness. Moreover, bicycles were originally a means for wealthy white people to get away from the cities which were filled with poor and non-white people they didn’t want to be around. On this new-fangled two-wheeled machine they could sail out of town at high speeds into the peaceful countryside where only the occasional farmers, deer, or ghosts of the already long erased native peoples could bother them. These bicyclists were some of the first to advocate for paved roads, so that they could get away faster from their neighbors. Then

cars came along and supplanted bicycles as the best way of putting space between neighbors with resources and neighbors without. For the most part, the bicycle went the way of a children’s toy, a tool of the desperate carless, or the pursuit of weekend fitness warriors, as our built environment in the majority of the United States was increasingly developed to serve the primacy of the car and those of us who drive them. Rather than trust in the built environment to change our ability to come close to each other, I believe it is developing what anthropologist Adonia Lugo calls “human infrastructure” that has the potential to truly bring us together. In her book Bicycle/Race, Lugo catalogues examples of bike lanes and infrastructure improvements that have gentrified city neighborhoods, forcing the residents who lived there in the first place to move rather than allowing them to benefit from any neighborhood revitalization. Building “human infrastructure” rather is a process that activates and organizes a community in order to break down the barriers that keep us separate and keep us from solving our community’s problems together. In a city like Elgin, that means building a necessarily racially, economically, and otherwise diverse human infrastructure, in order to come close enough to each other to be the kind of neighbors Mr. Rogers invited us to be.

Not in My Neighborhood As a white woman raised in a culture mired in white supremacy, I find that I am on a long journey of continuing to break the boundaries of racial hierarchy that keep me from coming

4.9

near to so many local, national, and global neighbors. I was taught for so long to not see how my white skin, race, and culture were prioritized that those barriers that keep us apart became invisible to me. I am continuing to learn to see not only how these barriers keep us apart but also how they divert resources to white and/ or already wealthy communities while depriving already underprivileged communities and/or communities of color. In witnessing responses to recent local, national, and global events, I have learned more about to what extent I am not by any means alone even among white or otherwise privileged people who think we are doing our best to be good neighbors. When people like me realize we are actually unwittingly hurting other people, we can display some pretty dramatic reactions. Like many animals who feel vulnerable, we either shut down and collapse in on ourselves protectively or we puff up and get defensive. I have been guilty of such reactions, and I have witnessed others displaying them, too. These moments of realization reveal what American sociologist and psychologist Rachel MacNair calls “perpetration-induced stress,” often experienced by those who harm others in a way that their society considers “acceptable” and that yet takes its emotional and psychological toll even when left unexamined. In other words, we are all hurt by the physical and emotional violence of racism and other forms of supremacy, even people most privileged by those structures, and even when we do not realize it. That is not to say that racist systems and structures or other such systems do not help some

September 2018

people gain resources at the expense of others. Rather, it is to say that, for example “white privilege” is a “gift” that white people like me should seek to return to sender before opening in order to diminish the harm it does to us and to our neighbors with the hope of one day dismantling white supremacy altogether. Indeed, rather than a gift it may be more helpfully viewed as a virus, not one of which we can easily wash our hands but indeed one from which we seek healing while not spreading it to those who come close to us. Racism, the unequal distribution of resources, and epidemic levels of isolation are problems shared by many communities in the United States. Yet, just as our city has distinct advantages in its physical design that help us overcome these challenges, our city also has advantages in our human infrastructure that can uniquely aid us in further connecting with each other to work on these issues together. As our community has awaited the results of the long investigation into the shooting of DeCynthia Clements, I have witnessed efforts from both protesting community organizers and the Elgin Police Department to attempt to build bridges in our city, which is exactly what we will need if we seek to find real community healing. As my oldest child experiences his first week of a dual-language kindergarten program in our local public school district U-46,

BRAVO

5

I have witnessed how the long efforts of a tireless few have provided the opportunity for my child and his young Spanish-speaking neighbors to come closer to each other, as well as opportunities for English-speaking and Spanish-speaking parents to come closer to each other as we support our neighborhood’s children together. As I have spent time downtown, I have witnessed how many local businesses and organizations support each other and the wellbeing of our community’s children by supporting the Gail Borden Public Library’s Summer Reading Program and getting in on the theme. Dinosaurs marching or sea creatures swimming across our city streets and into businesses’ front windows may seem like small gestures but the more these small acts bring us closer together the more powerful they become. While the trolleys that once connected our city are long gone, their tracks ripped up or buried, there is still something present in our city’s structure and in our city’s culture that gives us a unique opportunity to come closer to each other and to be the kind of neighbors trolley-loving Fred Rogers hoped to cultivate, ones who teach each other that we are all “loved and capable of loving.” When we can rise to the challenge of being those kind of neighbors, then we may be able to address the problems we face in the only way we will ever solve them — together. —KST

September 8-9th, from 9am4pm daily. This is a self-guided tour, with easy walking between featured homes. Docents direct visitors through each house and give informative descriptions of the history and architecture of the site.

Few events in Elgin have had as many positive effects on the community as the annual Historic Elgin House Tour. The most obvious effect is showcasing beautiful old homes and neighborhoods, but over the years the tour has featured houses which were both lovingly cared for and those brought back from the brink of ruin. One goal of the tour is to show that houses which have fallen on hard times can be rehabilitated into beautiful homes. It will also

demonstrate that traditional architecture can be compatible with today’s life styles. Since its inception the tour has featured more than 235 homes and 40 public, commercial and religious buildings. By rotating the tour sites the Elgin Historic House Tour has helped foster neighborhood pride and supported neighborhood groups other than the Gifford Park Association. It all contributes to creating a sense of place and pride in the city’s heritage. Proceeds from the tour are channeled by the GPA to other not-for-profit organizations, youth groups, architectural rehabilitation and public projects. Jen Fukala, House Tour CoChair and Director of the DNA invites all to participate in a special Elgin History dinner package available online only for $30 at the Elgin Public House, Saturday, September 8th at 6pm. On the Marquee: Battle of the Band Champs

SUNDAY CRUISE photos by Doug Hanson Discussing the creative process, band politics and gig schedules with Sunday Cruise, it’s easy to forget the foursome is still in high school. Fresh off their victory in the 2018 Battle of the Bands at Side Street Studio Arts, Eric Leith, Zoe Garcia, Devin Kazmierczak and Victor Zura met with us at Blue Box Cafe for their first interview. Their manager Jesus “Jay” Garcia had given some of the band a lift to the meeting after school let out in Elgin. “We just started out, like six months ago” Eric told the Daily Herald recently in a “Five Minutes With” piece about the band. That’s the timeline for Sunday Cruise, but there is an origin story that precedes it. Eric and Zoe had already been a musical partnership for a year or more, starting up bands with schoolmates who really weren’t serious about creating original songs. Together they spent time working out chord progressions, adding a melody and bass line, and eventually writing lyrics to

a handful of nicely crafted songs. “The words come last,” Zoe told us of her role as lead vocalist and lyricist. There are no political statements, vices or dystopian imagery in Sunday Cruise lyrics. “They’re the thoughts and feelings of characters” she has conceived, put into plain but poetic language that anyone with a heart can relate to. But the songs were impossible to perform with just two people, so they followed the example of others in the local music scene, and recorded a three song set by themselves. Those three songs, “Molly,” “Falling,” and “sad boi” form the core of their new band’s repertoire. As the band-within-the-band, Eric and Zoe turn and look at each other when asked a tough question that musicians hate, like “how would you describe your sound?” That’s when manager Jay speaks up and says, “the lyrics are definitely what I would call Midwestern emo, but they’re set to more of a clean, pop instrumentation.”

“We invited people over and over to come to the shows,” admitted Eric. “Some weren’t interested but came anyway and discovered they loved it.” But packing the jury with friends couldn’t entirely explain the end result — they had to have won people over with their sound in order to beat the runner-up, New Nights. “They were the best band to beat,” Zoe gushed.

Village of East Dundee

Downtown East Dundee Hosts First Annual Oktoberfest East Dundee’s historic downtown will play host to its first Oktoberfest, presented by Flood Brothers, featuring well known musicians from around the Midwest, a carnival, and food and drink from local vendors. The event, planned after East Dundee decided to discontinue participation in Heritage Fest, promises to attract thousands from around the northwest suburbs. “This is the first year we’ve decided to do something like this.” President Lael Miller said, “There’s truly no other event quite like this within the area.”

Bella Cain and Modern Day Romeos to Headline East Dundee’s Oktoberfest East Dundee’s First Annual Oktoberfest boasts two of the area’s most popular headliners in Bella Cain and Modern Day Romeos. “We were thoroughly impressed with the intense following these two headliners have.” Village Administrator Johnsen said, “Once we heard them perform, we knew they were perfect for our first Oktoberfest.” The festival will also include performances from 97-Nine, 8-Track, and the Polkaholics. Bella Cain, a Top 40 Country Group from Wisconsin, has played across the Midwest at events such as Country Thunder, Country USA, Summerfest, and the Wisconsin State Fair. They have shared the stage with national artists such as Brad Paisley, Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, and Dierks Bentley. Bella Cain will take the Oktoberfest stage at 8:30pm on Friday, October 12th and will doubtlessly leave attendees breathless with their amazing musicianship and unmatched high energy onstage.

Modern Day Romeos, the Saturday night headliner, has been entertaining Chicagoland crowds for over 15 years. The band plays a wide selection of music ranging from Motown classics to the top hits of the 2000s. Modern Day Romeos aren’t just known for the musical prowess-they are also known for their wildly entertaining and engaging performance. MDR doesn’t just want people to come see a great show; they want the entire crowd to be part of it! Modern Day Romeos will rock the big stage on Saturday, October 13th at 8:30pm.

“All You Can Ride” Wristbands The carnival will return to East Dundee’s downtown for Oktoberfest and will operate from 5-10pm on Friday, October 12th, 1-10pm on Saturday, October 13th, and 1-5pm on Sunday, October 14th. The carnival will feature a wide variety of rides for people of all ages. Tickets can be purchased on site for individual rides or attendees can purchase a wristband for unlimited rides. Wristbands are valid for one day. The wristband special is available between 5-9pm Friday night and 1-5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Pretzels, brats, sauerkraut, and schnitzel — East Dundee restaurants and non-profit organizations will be displaying a wide variety of German themed food options in honor of Oktoberfest. From the culinary delights of the Anvil Club to the delicious smoked meats of Rosie O’Hares and Duke’s Blues and BBQ, there is certainly a food option for everyone. Is German food not your favorite? Don’t worry! Burgers, tacos, and other traditional street foods will be present as well. Come on down to River Street and see all that East Dundee’s many restaurants have to offer!

The Fun Doesn’t End on Saturday! While Sunday might not feature live music, it certainly won’t lack in entertainment. Come watch Mitch Trubisky lead the Chicago Bears to victory against the Miami Dolphins at East Dundee’s largest tailgate party! The downtown tent will feature a 10 by16 foot projection screen, beer and food vendors, as well as a complete professional sound system. There is no place you’d rather be to watch this game! THROUGH MUSIC, THE HEART SOARS

Heartland Voices, an Elgin-based mixed choral ensemble, announces auditions for their 2018-2019, twentieth anniversary season. The semi-professional ensemble consists of 28 advanced singers who perform a variety of literature from renaissance to vocal jazz. There are openings in all sections for singers. More specifically, there are single openings for section leaders in the soprano, tenor and bass sections. The section leader positions are paid. Heartland Voices rehearse each Tuesday evening from mid-September through April, presenting three events—“Christmastide-Rejoice” on December 14, 15 and 16, 2018; a lighter fare at the annual Gala (music from the 1920s) on March 8 and 9, 2019; and spring concerts, “Keep a Song in Your Heart”, on April 26, 27 and 28. Auditions for all potential singers are by appointment. An audition time can be scheduled by contacting artistic director, Dr. John G Slawson, at chordirektr@att.net. Section leader auditionees should attach a resume to the email. The audition will consist of singing a solo selection of choice, showing the voice at its best. There will be other vocal exercises and sight-reading as part of the audition. Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you!

About the Project: A month long theatrical event presenting three plays in rotating repertory, written and directed by women, using theater-in-the-round techniques practiced by Margo Jones, who was an American stage director/producer best known for launching the American regional theater movement in Dallas, Texas, in 1947. This project celebrates women’s plays and the innovations they have created along with recognizing a pioneer who has been largely forgotten.

“Offer Never Expires” This is the latest in our series of reprints of old Elgin advertising, featuring the artwork, photographs, writing and business ideas of previous generations of Elginites. In the coming months, we’ll feature ads particularly from 1935 and 1985, when every proud local business placed an ad in a special edition of the daily newspaper honoring Elgin’s Centennial and Sesquicentennial. Vintage Elgin National Watch Company ads are from the collection of Jennifer Fukala.

Elgin Fire Barn No. 5, 533 St. Charles Street

COLOR MY CITY

Illustrations by Madeline Richmond

IDEA BOX

What color should you make the big double doors? Will you choose another color instead? Draw in a bench on the right side of the doors, where there has always been one. Draw in “NO. 5” Elgin’s Fire Department was becoming more and more professionalized at the turn of the 20th Century, and this commercial quality building reflects the importance placed on firefighters and their work. Company No. 5 was established in 1904 to occupy this, the last fire barn built in the City. It remained a working fire station until 1990, and was converted into a museum in 1991, which now houses displays and artifacts from Elgin firefighting history. Tours, group programs, rentals and merchandise are available. Go to: elginfi remuseum.com, and historicelgin.com

Wake Up the Drummer by Mary Ellen Goodwill If you’ve been eating popcorn from a steel bowl and all that’s left is unpopped kernels, you’ve got yourself a percussion instrument. Try it. It will sound like a rain stick. In most every high school class I ever taught — heck, I’ll go out on a limb and say, in EVERY high school class I ever taught — there would be at least one percussionist who was easily identified on the first day: Often sitting in the back corner by the window, drumming on the desk top, smiling with the rhythm, this person became an instrument every ready to be called into play. “May I have a drum roll, please?” And, you bet, I’d have one. The drum roll is a simple, free and effective attention getter. Some classes were graced with two and even three percussionists. By the end of first semester the numbers would have invariably grown. For example, let’s say Nate A. is at the podium ready to deliver his presentation about Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the Chicago area. “May we have a drum roll, please?” and Nate would be welcomed with a quick, energetic desktop drum roll. Suitable, for sure, and always effective. Sit up. Pay attention. There’s been a drum roll. Something is about to happen. Now if the drummer is having a bad day — and, from my experience, this is rare — the teacher is sensitive enough to not call on the drummer. The teacher might attempt a drum roll herself. That would fail because no one is listening to the teacher. She would have to tap another student. Who would that be?

Asking for a volunteer she would be met with lowered eyes and all other means of evasion. “I NEED a drum roll!” she might earnestly implore. No takers. “Katie W. is coming to the podium and she DESERVES a drum roll.” Here, obviously, the teacher is employing the guilt trip. It fails. Impatient and perturbed, Katie takes the podium without a drum roll and lets everyone know that she is not pleased. With Katie’s scowl and growl, our drummer is ultimately roused from his lethargy. Everyone watches as Jeremy H. unravels his long body, sits up in a semi-awakened state and produces a crisp drum roll. He is wildly cheered. So much so that he seizes the moment (as well he should) and gives us a real treat of lively, impressive, sustained drumming. When he hands it over to Katie, she is clapping and hooting along with the rest of us. She waits for the audience to “be with her,” as she was taught, and then begins her presentation on the art of Rogers and Hammerstein. She woke up the drummer. So if you’ve been eating popcorn from a steel bowl and all that’s left is unpopped kernels, wake up from your lethargy of a gut bloated with butter, salt and air popped corn and toss those kernels. Get a rhythm going with a deft motion. Ta-ta, ta-ta, clinkity-clinkity-clink. You’ve got yourself a steel drum roll. Post Script: On the last day of class before summer break, “May I have a drum roll, please?” was always answered in thunder.

get out, the unknown was gone. Close call. Later in the week when I was trying to keep the squirrels and chippies at bay, an unknown attacked the south border. Unbelievable. I do not know how the host and hostess survive without me. With all these issues, I am even more tuckered out than I was last week.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation: A Dog’s Blog

Saturday

by Zero (Note: This summer we were ‘babysitting’ a friend’s dog for two weeks. After the dog left, this blog was found stuffed in a corner of our couch. Scientists believe that every dog year is the equivalent of seven human years therefore it makes sense that for Zero, every human day is a week, and her weeks, it appears, begin on Saturdays.)

What The Humans Call Saturday (What a coincidence!!) They tell me this week is called July 21st. To me, it’s the first week of my vacation. Overall, my vacation villa is acceptable. My double decker sleeping quarters are very nice, with an enclosed space on the bottom and cushions on the top. These sleeping quarters seem surprisingly like mine at home. My food dish too seems quite familiar, but the bathroom is quite different. See, I am a city dog so I like boulevards and fire hydrants, but at my vacation villa I have what the host and hostess call a backyard. After a tour of the grounds, I play with a stick and then try to help them with their squirrel problem. And I thought this was my vacation!

Saturday They tell me this week is called July 22nd. Well, before I begin the stories of this week, I have to tell you about last week. Boy, did they have the storms. Oh my goodness gracious! The storms rolled in with a ferociousness enough to frighten a lion. I tried going under the sink, but no. I tried going in the bathtub, but no. Finally, I just wore my thundercoat, hid on the couch under some pillows, and rode out storm after storm after storm. Another thing I gotta tell you.

4.9

There is not just a squirrel problem here but a chippie problem. I would go so far as to call it an infestation. I know it’s my vacation and all, but I just feel so bad for my host and hostess I have to rid them of the pests. You know, my good-hearted nature and all.

Saturday They tell me this week is called July 23rd. If it’s not one thing, it’s another at this vacation villa. The squirrel and chipmunk infestation is out of control. Between the fear of the storms and the chasing of the pests, I’m all tuckered out. So, while I was finally taking a nice nap on the patio, all of a sudden BOOM! CRASH! ATTACK FROM THE NORTH SIDE! Not one but TWO dogs were trying to breach the security fence. I did my best and at the moment it appears they are at bay. What a way to start week three!

Saturday They tell me this week is called July 24th. Early this week, an unknown came INTO THE VACATION VILLA. The bummer is I was locked in my lower level sleeping quarters and couldn’t help. When I did

They tell me this week is called July 25th. The start of a great week! Up and out early, very few chippies on the grounds, good breakfast, tasty snacks as the week went on, and the smells!!! The host and hostess were going gangbusters at a big black fire making machine. I do not know exactly what they were doing, but it smelled good and items fell like manna from heaven to me on the patio... delicious. This IS the best week of vacation.

Saturday They tell me this week is called July 26th. This week did not start out well. I had smells on the brain from last week’s fire making machine extravaganza so when I went out and about the grounds, I rolled in some very pungent aromas. I tell you, when I returned later in the week to the Vacation Villa, the hostess was not most pleased. Now I am just drying off. Getting back to the villa grounds, I was happy with the lack of squirrels so I thought, finally, I can let my guard down….but no! Not an attack on the north side – I repelled that one about a month ago – not on the south side – I repelled that one much more recently – but all around and this one’s horrendous. Loud sawing noises, two-leggeds

climbing trees inside the perimeter. Just awful! The host and hostess, adding insult to injury, brought me indoors. I could do nothing! That bath and the invasion have just tuckered me out.

Saturday They tell me this week is called July 27th. I call it BEST! WEEK! EVER! Great breakfast (again!). Great walk (again! - oh, I think I forgot to tell you about my other walks – great smells in the countryside!) Great weather (again!) And I chased not a squirrel, not a chippie, but a rabbit. What fun! About mid-week I found a really big stick and I am having at it. All my chewing has made me mighty tired so I am off to sleep early.

What The Humans Call Saturday They tell me this week is called July 28th. This week started out well. Great breakfast, great walk, a bit of playing with my really big stick, but then oh, the horror ATTACK! ATTACK! ATTACK! ATTACK! All four sides invaded. Dogs running along the north perimeter, dogs running along the south perimeter, THREE little twoleggeds along the east perimeter, and then, the coup de grace, one big two-legged from the west CAME INTO THE VACATION VILLA. It took me quite a while but I drove all the invaders away. I just have no more strength to continue the blog.

Saturday They tell me this week is called July 29th. Seems unbelievable to me, but I have been on vacation – as some might call it – for two months! This week I had varying amounts of time to wander the grounds, however I tell you, after the attacks of last week and the heat of this week, I don’t even feel like chewing my big stick. I’m ok with just sacking out.

big screen in the corner but then it stopped. Thank goodness, otherwise I would have been on the attack. After that false alarm, I just went very willingly into my sleeping quarters.

Saturday They tell me this week is called July 31st. Rather than tell you all about my week, I will just tell you of one GLORIOUS event. Late in the week the host and hostess were eating dinner. I had already fed upon my evening repast – notice the change of style here – I have been reading over the shoulders of my host and hostess these past few months, improving my vocabulary – but I digress. I’d just finished my dinner, they were still eating theirs, when wonder of wonders, a flying sausage appeared. It never hit the ground. It vanished in an instant. The hostess was upset but I was very satisfied.

Saturday They tell me this week is called August 1st. This week the host and hostess were relaxing on the sofa watching what they call a movie. I was starting to doze when all of a sudden, barking, barking, barking. I jumped up and ran to the back door, but the sound was not from the outside...IT WAS FROM THE INSIDE. Oh, horror, it was coming from somewhere behind that

Saturday They tell me this week is called July 30th This week starts as all weeks do with the hostess singing her opening song, “Good morning to you! Good morning to Zero! Good morning to you! Good morning, happy dog!” and it was a good week too. A bit of time playing with my big stick, slumbering in the lower level sleeping chamber – my choice – when they had an intruder mid-week. After that dinner, stick time, and a new vacation event – brushy-brushy. At first I was a little concerned, but when I saw the fur fly, I felt good. Now I am just relaxing and getting ready to go to sleep.

41

Saturday They tell me this week is called August 2nd I LIKE CAULIFLOWER! Never thought of myself as a veggie dog, but guess I am! As to my week, though it may seem odd to say about a vacation, I am getting into a routine: yummy breakfast, tour of the grounds, walk in the park with the host and hostess, nap time when they disappear, after they reappear more time touring the grounds, yummy dinner, a bit of a nap then sleep. In between there is always the big stick. It’s getting smaller every week, but it is still a very big stick. Wonder what next week will bring?

Saturday They tell me this week is called August 3rd. Bad news. I’ve been told next Saturday I go home. That means vacation is over. Bummer, Bummer, Bummer! Back to the grind of two squares a week, double-decker sleeping quarters, walks, chewing on sticks…..Hey! That sounds quite a bit like... VACATION!!! YIPPEE!!! I will still be on VACATION!!!!!! Now I am looking forward to going HOME! How I Spent My Summer Vacation: A Dog’s Blog by Zero Big Stick Productions MacBec Publishing, Inc Elgin, IL 60123-2646 ©2018

CUSTOM CATERING

A dog’s bed is not merely for sleeping, but a catch-all for every little conquest your dog has made for the day: your brand new shoes, a dirty wash towel from your laundry hamper, the Styrofoam container from the trash that holds the meat you buy, chicken bones and any scented wrapper, peeling, or paper towel that had fallen off the counter or was conveniently left head deep in the trash container. As you can see by the picture, even if the cat ventures to take a nap in their sleeping quarters, a dog will claim him, too. Dogs’ beds are their sanctuaries and they believe anything they can find in the house and cleverly put on their mat before you notice is their domain to claim – it’s Dogs’ Law.

Once, I noticed a conspicuously concealed EMPTY box of Cepacol cough lozenges located in our dog’s bed, six of them in total were missing. Knowing that medication can be poisonous to animals, I did what any woman would naturally do in this type of situation: I called my husband. He of course, had no idea if it would cause any harm. After all, he reminded me that he isn’t a pharmacist, a vet and never worked for poison control. He did say that since Cepacol is a numbing agent for the throat, our dog wouldn’t be able to feel her mouth for several hours.

He told me to call a vet, which was an obvious answer, but still, aren’t husbands supposed to know everything? How to repair a drain leak, how to install wood floors, how many tablespoons of flour are in a cup, how to drive to a place three states over, how to disinfect a dog after she was sprayed by a skunk and how to program the DVD player? Okay, maybe not, and maybe not any of the things I just typed either. The first vet said to call poison control and there would be a $50 dollar charge. So far we have shelled out countless amounts of money for our pets ... like the emergency room visit when our little cat, Chewie, sat down near a lit candle and suddenly poof! his tail was smoking. I called another vet who kindly told me that Cepacol shouldn’t be poisonous, but to watch the dog isn’t lethargic and doesn’t throw up. So I go outside to get our two dogs after their potty break and luckily, Daisy doesn’t seem lethargic. She is doing her usual thing, sitting at the bottom of a large tree, waiting for a squirrel to venture down so she can chase it and humor herself into thinking she’s going to be able to catch it. After five years here, and no squirrel caught, you would think she would give up but I guess it all has to do with the thrill of the chase. She wouldn’t know what to do with it anyway if she caught it.

I was pretty happy that she was okay until I saw the three big white spots on the back porch. I freaked out. My dog must be throwing up — or worse, foaming at the mouth. After inspecting what appeared to be vomit and looking for half-digested throat lozenges, I soon realized I was looking through ... residual snow. Not one of my finest moments. The moral of this story: don’t leave anything anywhere that your dog can root through like the trash, sniff around and grab like something on your bedside table, nothing on the counter they can slide off with their tongue. I found our big dog licking the steaks in the frying pan once and yes, we did throw them away.

know they want it, but after chewing it, they realize they aren’t too enthused about it and yet they still want it near their dog bed for ownership purposes. And never ever leave a tuna fish can (empty or totally sealed shut) anywhere in the vicinity because they will bite through the steel for their absolute favorite – tuna fish. So the next time you find something missing, scamper over to your dog’s bed and if it’s not there, it’s probably in their next best hiding place — their stomach. — DK

“A dog person is someone whose phone has more saved pictures of their dog than their kids,” says east sider John Marston. And statistics would indicate that in Elgin and nationwide, dog people are the norm, with more U.S. dog households than any other kind of animal, including cats, horses, birds, and fish. The domesticated dog integrates with human society so well because she is inherently social. “Dogs are pack animals,” explained Beth Drake-Foster, CEO of Anderson Animal Shelter (AAS). “In order to be happy, they need to be part of a pack.” Your dog’s canine cousins — the wolves, coyotes, foxes, dingos and the rest — are also pack animals, but there’s a difference. “Through artificial selection, we have created dogs who accept humans as their pack.” The oldest, best evidence of human-dog relationships dates to 14,700 years ago, when early humans hunted for a living and may have learned to cooperate with canines. That relationship evolved into a companionship so deep that humans now treat dogs like people.

time surviving outdoors without human support.” This is part of the reason why we seldom hear of “feral dogs” or trap-neuter-release programs for dogs, as we do for cats. Homeless dogs are simply not a problem in the United States. “In northern Illinois, most communities do not have a dog overpopulation problem,” reports Foster. “People in our area tend to undersand the importance of spaying and neutering. For this reason, don’t receive a lot of locally born puppies.” Yet the shelter facilitates over 2,500 dog adoptions each year, and houses 80 dogs and puppies between its main shelter in South Elgin and adoption centers in Bloomingdale and North Aurora. “We partner with overwhelmed shelters in the South where there is a huge dog overpopulation problem,” says Foster. “We transport dogs and puppies to Anderson from these

“Our dog is a member of the family,” added Marston. “A dog is a living thing that you have chosen to take care of ... and it’s depending on you to do that. The only difference from your kids is you don’t have to worry about teaching them to drive, or paying for college.” Mans’ Best Friend is so well adapted to living with people that, like most humans, she would have trouble going it alone. “Unlike cats, dogs don’t revert to the wild easily,” notes Foster. “Most dogs have a tough

Call for Art: Serial Tiles Printing a large piece of art as a combination of smaller sheets is called “tiling.” BRAVO Magazine is seeking a piece of two dimensional visual art to feature in a series of 12 monthly issues beginning in January, 2019. Each month, we’ll print a 1/12 section of the art (a “tile”) as a single page in BRAVO. Readers will be encouraged to cut out and save each tile during the year. When the series is completed, the twelve sections can be assembled together to form a finished piece 40 x 33 inches in size.

“A dog and her owner have a symbiotic relationship, and it should be equal,” says Marston. “The dog has its physical needs taken care of, and less tangible things come back to the person, like companionship, protection and devotion.” When asked why people adopt dogs, Foster said “Primarily our dogs are adopted by people who want companions. Working, herding and guide dogs usually require extensive training which almost starts at a very young age.” “Dogs can be happy in many roles,” says Dr. Dougherty. “What they want is for their physical and social needs to be met, and they want their world to be consistent and make sense.” As do we all. “I treat our dog like a person,” confesses Marston. “I ask her questions and I’m baffled when she doesn’t answer. She has the full run of the house ... and my emotions.” But dog people, be advised. You may well cook supper for your dog, knit her a sweater, take her to the spa and sing her

Says Marston, “I knew the dog had me when she ate my wife’s wedding ring and I was more worried about her than the jewelry.” —JP

We are looking for original artwork in traditional or digital media, created at any size or orientation, so long as the proportions are 11:9. Light, bright saturated colors reproduce best on our paper. Elgin-related subject matter is preferred, with a composition that does not anticipate the tiling process. All proposals will be considered.

There is no compensation available for this project, but the artist will receive recognition each month, and a personal interview which will appear as an article at some point during the series.
