Cover Artist: Lillian Pagni Hampshire, IL Lillian’s love affair with art started when she took an art class at the YWCA in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and then began painting with other artists at a local church in Richmond, Illinois. She then enrolled in a soft pastel workshop at Dillon’s Lodge in Woodruff, Wisconsin with Susan Kaczynski. More recently she has studied oil pastel with friend and mentor George Shipperley and continues her love of oil pastel painting with Carol Zack at The Fine Line Creative Arts Center in St. Charles, Illinois.

Say the words “jazz music,” and what comes to mind? Old music, boring, hard to follow? Intense, improvisational, hard to find in Elgin? Like the music itself, all of these contradictions can be true to one degree or another. Jazz artists, like other musicians, feed off of each other’s ideas and energy. More than any other music style, jazz is heavily improvisational. It takes a seasoned, experienced pro to hang with the band and then break away, soaring to the joy or pain inherent in the mood of the piece. No performance will ever be exactly the same. Jazz is like a photograph. You could take a picture of the same subject, say a tree, every day, but something will shift to make it a different photo. A successful jazz group performance relies on the players’ cohesion to the theme and the ability to express individual musical “thoughts” during a solo. The educated listener applauds the soloist’s flight of exuberant expression. An artist’s willingness to expose such musical intimacy with an audience should

be rewarded by applause. It encourages the player and amps up the energy of the band. Okay! Now that you’re an educated listener, it’s time to use your new skills! Whether your tastes run to big band jazz, jazzrock fusion, vocalists or funky jazz, Elgin has the talent. Check it out!

Old School The Jazz Consortium Big Band, formerly the RSVP band, is alive and kicking. Gigs in Elgin included the Christmas tree lighting ceremony, Art & Soul on the Fox, and concerts in Wing Park. Roy Vombrack and his band members go way back to their Northern Illinois University years, circa 1975, when they decided to form their own big band. Eventually, they disbanded as adult responsibilities took precedence over the joys of music. Unfortunately, as most musicians say, “You can’t make a living at it,” said Vombrack. He put down his alto saxophone and put on his headphones to become a producer and arranger for commercial jingles in the 1980s.

Lillian is the author of two children’s books, The Christmas Tree that Never Was and Maggie and Her Three Swans. Proceeds from the sale of books go to a local hospital charity. Lillian’s extended contribution to the arts continues as the Curator of the The Healing Gallery at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin, Illinois. More of her work can be seen at yellowhouseartists.com

private party entertainment, or the aforementioned RSVP band. The spirit of co-operation is important to the Jazz Consortium, as they mentor up-and-coming musicians. For instance, area high school jazz bands are invited to show up for a gig. Vocalist CHAR praises the band for the opportunity it gave her, saying that “Roy is a hero of mine.”

Roy Vombrack. Retired from his professional career in radio and TV, Vombrack once again is pursuing his passion for playing music. About eight years ago, Vombrack and his buddies decided it was time to get the band back together. Vombrack still had the original music charts from the NIU days. Today, concedes Vombrack, “It’s a hobby that takes up more time than it should.” Marketing and promotion are necessary to “get the word out and the people in,” Vombrack stated. Social media is a must for communication, from Facebook to YouTube and even the old-fashioned press release. Vombrack advises, “You can’t really let up [on promotions].” These days, the Jazz Consortium Big Band (JCBB) plays a regular gig at Durty Nellies in Palatine on the second Sunday of every month. Vombrack would love to see a performance venue in his hometown of Elgin with the space and audience for the 17 piece jazz band. The JCBB plays music of “Benny Goodman to popular tunes arranged for the big band instrumentation,” said Vombrack.

Jazz isn’t solely instrumental; vocalists are key to a swinging sound. Song interpretation ranges from scat (singers imitating musical instruments) to a well-turned phrase that adds a unique twist to the song. Elgin is fortunate to be home to some exceptional singers on the rise.

CHAR Perhaps you remember CHAR McAllister from a previous BRAVO article this year. This Jamaican born artist now calls Elgin home. She has big musical dreams for herself and for Elgin to thrive as a home for live music. Since she moved here two years ago, CHAR said, “Elgin has been a place of rebirth for me. It’s magical.” She credits her background as a Gospel singer as the major influence on her singing ability. When she was just five or six years old, CHAR sang her first church solo, and from that point on, she knew she wanted to be a singer. To this day, she said, “Gospel prepares you for all kinds of music ...” as it “breathes life into all genres.”

To note, CHAR draws upon her Gospel training to sing tunes as diverse as “Born to Run” (Springsteen), “Natural Woman” (Carole King), and “Here’s to Life” (Shirley Horn).

Today, he continues, the JCBB is “more of a listening experience” that “offers something for everyone.” Because the nature of big band music has changed over the years, the JCBB plays some swing, jazz-rock, and more modern music. The JCBB encourages local jazz artists to perform with them. Vocalists, such as CHAR, have collaborated with the band in its guises as a wedding band,

Although jazz music was discouraged in her home, CHAR was an inquisitive person. Ella Fitzgerald and her famous scat singing first caught her ear and became the biggest jazz influence on CHAR’s jazz vocals. She credits Roy Vombrack for hiring her: “Roy was the first one to call me [for a gig]. I learned onstage ... he gave me the song list.” Another Elgin musician, Amaryllis, The Latin Phoenix, helped “relaunch CHAR’s music career” with the release of the Suitcase and a Dream EP at The Latin Phoenix Studio. CHAR’s music continues to evolve, and for her, “Jazz is liberating.” She writes original tunes and has the arrangements in her head. Her style is a melding of “bringing the modern into the new.” The next goal for CHAR is to get a degree in music theory from Columbia College so she can write out the music she hears in her head and share it with other musicians to perform the pieces.

Amaryllis Santiago, The Latin Phoenix When she’s not traveling across the country to work on her many music projects, Amaryllis is making plans for an Elgin venue called “The Latin Phoenix Music and Arts Studio.” Its expected opening will happen next year. She has faith in Elgin and believes “there are many talented artists and musicians within the Elgin music scene.”

As a solo artist, she works with a wide range of musicians and doesn’t wish to confine herself to one genre. Musicians who inspire Amaryllis span the decades of the 1970s through the 1990s, including Teena Marie, Luther Vandross, Sade, Patti LaBelle and Oleta Adams.

Amaryllis Santiago. Source: Facebook. Amaryllis said she “found her voice through a process of life experiences, musical development, and many collaborations” with other artists since she started her musical voyage at age 21. Currently, she is working both coasts, with Kenny G’s pianist Robert Damper and percussionist Ron Powell, based in Seattle, and with bassist Ruben Rodriguez in New York.

Jacquelyn Miller Jacquelyn Miller’s talent for singing came to her unexpectedly. While in the 5th grade, she sang a solo in the Spring Sing Concert. She performed the solo so well, the teacher told her father she’d “never heard anything like it from someone [so young],” said her father, Scott Miller. “By the time she was 13,” Miller said, she began entering singing competitions,”and she was winning them.” In addition, Miller sang for nursing home residents and charity events. When she turned 16, she attended open mic sessions, where she wowed the audience and worked

Referring to herself as a “Latin Fusion Artist,” Amaryllis traces her roots to Salsa, R & B, Funk, and Smooth Jazz. She prefers that people will “recognize [her] signature sound” rather than box her into a particular style. Since immersing herself in the music world in 2005, Amaryllis has collaborated with talents Jose Feliciano, Nino Segarra, and Erben Perez (bass player for Marc Anthony).

These days, you may catch her act at the Martini Room in downtown Elgin. Someday soon, she would like to perform with a regular band. For now, her father works as her manager and sets up the sound system. The song choices are pleasingly eclectic, and Jacquelyn switches seamlessly from torch songs to gems like “I Put a Spell on You.” With Jacquelyn’s rendition, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins wouldn’t recognize his own hit!

The Players As an art form, jazz itself is a fusion of multiple styles, cultural traditions, and even instrumentation, which is why these artists so often prefer that term. In Elgin you can find a variety of live music combos ranging from a saxophone and percussion plus deejay (performing as Groove Lounge) to bands like these.

Covington Groove Led by bass player Colin Ryan, Covington Groove has a core quartet that usually features Ben Bollero (guitar), Nick Odman (keyboards), and Jason Perez (drums). Ryan calls the group a “collective of musicians, a growing family.” Ryan is enthusiastic about sharing the spotlight: “Once you’ve played a show with Covington Groove, you are a part of the Covington Groove family.” In recent months, Covington Groove featured singer CHAR, drummer Cory Bray, and trumpeter Ron Polad. Occasionally, original member Sam Wyatt

Covington Groove & Friends at Martini Room. Source: Facebook. (keys) drops by for a jam. Ryan refers to the band’s style as fusion: “We love the word fusion and the freedom that comes with it.” A look at their set list reflects it is so, for they play everything from Oscar Peterson to Jimi Hendrix and beyond.

The mission of Destination Dundee is to put a spotlight on Dundee businesses, offering fine and casual dining, unique shopping opportunities and personable professional services, to all nearby communities as well as our own villages.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Said Ryan, “We are doing our part with the help of the Martini Room to bring the experience of jazz to the people of Elgin on a monthly basis.” Like most musicians today, the group has a strong presence on social media and a website, yet Ryan admits,” We’d be open to getting any help we can.” To keep the music going, band members teach, learn new material, and seek new gigs. Perez and Ryan work together on the “Tunes for a Minute” podcast, and plans are in place to record an EP this year. Other recordings happening this year will feature a trio and another a quartet. As is typical for Elgin’s fusion/ jazz groups, Covington Groove is a living, breathing organism that invites other musicians into the fold. Ryan stated: “I’d love to find some more and build a scene together. Hit me up any time.”

Accidentally on Purpose Cory Bray, drummer for AOP, said “The one thing AOP wants the world to know is that ‘Nothing happens on accident; everything has a purpose’.” This philosophy defines the band’s spontaneous approach to improvisation and their willingness to embrace unknown situations with an outcome that sounds rehearsed. AOP’s core personnel is Lamonte Norwood (bass/vocals), Timothy Jackson (saxophone/piano), Aris “Gifted” Johnson (piano), and Cory on drums/bandleader. All four got their musical training from playing at church and were encouraged to pursue Gospel. From the tender ages of 10, the boys played with the adult musicians and each learned their chops quickly from their association with seasoned musicians. You never know who’ll show up, as surprise guests are welcome to share the stage with AOP. In July, vocalist Mash Onda Beat arrived to join AOP at Danny’s on Douglas. In no time at all, the crowd was worked up and jamming. Bray is quick to say Elgin’s network

of jazzy musicians is tight, “we team up on gigs, as well as swap musicians as needed. There are no egos or competition ... just a passion to bring live music to the forefront in Elgin.”

Funk Brotherz Although technically not a jazz group, the improvisations of the guitar and keyboards are highly conducive to the jazz style. Ron “Dr. Sweat” Anderson is the drummer and bandleader. Other members include Arnell Grady (vocals), Jerome Cunningham (bass), Jeffrey “Wiz” Williams (guitar), Cheb Blackshear (keys), and Vince “Cuz” Allison (percussion). Special guest vocalist Bruce Thompson took the stage recently at Danny’s. “Danny’s is our creative stage,” said Grady. The band likes to experiment and work up the crowd. Like so many other Elgin musicians, Gospel music was the training ground for the Funk Brotherz. When asked of Elgin’s appetite for live jazz, Anderson explained, “Not very good, unless it’s Latin jazz ... Most people appreciate a taste of jazz, but just a taste.” Too often, Anderson realized, people will applaud after a song

but not acknowledge “a terrific solo.” For now, the group churns out the hits from Kool and the Gang to Steely Dan, giving them room to stretch their considerable creative muscle.

The ECC Connection Elgin Community College is leading the revival of live music in the city. Colin Ryan of Covington Groove credits Shawn Maxwell, Associate Professor of Music, and Steve Duchrow, Director, for encouraging the performance of live music. A requirement of the Music Theory class includes a weekly performance or use of the lessons learned that week. Maxwell said, “The Jazz Ensemble is centered around performance.” In addition, ECC invites guest artists to the campus to hold clinics and give the students a chance to play onstage with renowned musicians. Music student Eric Manley (guitar/piano) counts himself “fortunate ... to have made great connections

with a lot of musicians during [his] time at ECC.” Manley believes Elgin has potential to become a home for jazz. He is encouraged by Elgin’s support for the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and hopes it will do the same for other genres of music. C.G.’s Ryan would “love to see more venues and jazz or fusion bands in downtown Elgin.” Professor Maxwell advises “everyone to attend a concert of something ... unfamiliar ... music that is not on your top ten playlist.” The fluidity of diverse musical styles demonstrated by Elgin’s musicians is an asset to our city. Combining the artist’s unique background with that of other musicians creates a tasty stew and provides an aural feast for those willing to take the time to listen. So, go on, Elgin. Do your ears a favor and go hear our own home-grown artists play their hearts out for you. — DT

It’s All Happening! Elgin Summer Theatre Offers “Sister Act”

Putting together festivals year after year is a hard and sometimes thankless undertaking. For Erin, there is always a moment that reminds her of why she continues this work. “It’s those moments in-between.”

Elgin Summer Theatre returns to Hemmens Cultural Center in a new production of the musical Sister Act, August 15 through 24.

It’s not just the performers who apply to come back each year, but the relationships that the performers are building with the community who have taken them in, given them a place to stay and truly welcomed everyone into our community.

From a wildly popular early nineties movie that was made into a musical in 2006, Sister Act was nominated for 5 Tony awards and is a fun, powerful and feel good story that everyone could use. In Sister Act, after being put into witness protection, our hero Deloris uses her talent to inspire the other nuns to create a more contemporary choir, and they become the hit of the community. Since 1973, Elgin Summer Theatre has been inspiring artists and audiences alike. New this year is a partnership with Schaumburg On Stage adult community theater division, Point2productions. The cast will feature actors from Elgin and the surrounding communities and is directed by Brian Scholz and choreographed by Sarah Richardson. This is not the first time that Schaumburg On Stage has ventured west for a production. In July of 2017, Schaumburg On Stage launched their adult community theater division, Point2productions, with a presentation of Little Shop of Horrors at the intimate Elgin Art Showcase. It is hoped that this innovative partnership between Elgin Summer Theater and Schaumburg On Stage will be sustainable and inspire many performers for years to come. Show times are 8:00pm, August 10, 11, 17 and 18, with 3:00pm matinees on August 12 and 19. $17 - $20 reserved seating. Tickets are available at The Hemmens Box Office, by phone at 847 931-5900 or on-line at www. hemmens.org.

2018 Elgin Fringe Festival Five years ago Erin Rehberg and Sean Hargadon, along with a group of Elgin artists took a leap into uncharted waters, without checking the water temp, no lifeguard on duty. And at night they said to each other “whatever happens happens,” and took a deep breath — jumping into the fringe festival life, bringing performing and visual artists of all genres into Elgin for a festival that took place all over downtown Elgin. That leap has made Elgin a can’t miss stop for national and international artists as well as fringe audiences. This year’s Elgin Fringe Festival returns September 7th-16th with 110 performing artists, visual art and musical performances happening throughout downtown Elgin. “Every year there are new things to be excited about,” says Rehberg. That excitement started this year with the poster design by Elgin’s very own Kira Fox. A homegrown artist who is a graduate of the Visual and Performing Arts Academy program at Larkin High School, current student at Elgin Community College and a member of the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission. Kira has grown from starting as a volunteer, then an intern, to becoming an Assistant Director at Side Street Studio Arts. The poster design is very different than the four previous years and has set an exciting tone for the festival. Another change is that the music performances will be free and open to the public in Carlton Rogers Park.

It also needs to be noted that Fringe does not happen without the help of local businesses. The performances take place in spaces donated by Side Street Studio Arts, Elgin Art Showcase, Imago, Blue Box Café, Elgin Public House, and the Martini Room. Tickets for all performances go on sale August 1st. Be sure to pick up your $3 dollar fringe button. Fringe buttons are required to purchase tickets to a performance, get you into Fringe parties and events and get you discounts at area businesses. For more information be sure to check out the website www.elginfringefestival.com and on Facebook at @elginfringefestival. #EFFit #befringe #fringelife #downtownElgin #year5 #fi veyearsoffringe #supportlocalart #fringefamily #USAFF #CAFF #worldfringe

THE DNA OFFICE HAS MOVED!

HOLLY,

Come visit us at our new location at 31 S. Grove Avenue.

by Jeffrey Pierce No, that comma is not a mistake. That’s the correct spelling of the name of a new/old band whose music flows likes the emotions in a love letter. “Holly is the fictional girlfriend that got away from us,” explained Tanner Bednar, songwriter and lead vocalist. “The comma is sort of this ambiguous Holly, ... what’s next?”

The Downtown Neighborhood Association office has moved to 31 S. Grove Avenue, just .1 mile from our previous location! The phone number remains 847-488-1456. Please follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/downtownelgin or visit the new Downtown Elgin website!

www.DowntownElgin.com IT’S YOUR CITY. IT’S YOUR DNA.

It’s a key part of the synergy in the band’s new album entitled Letters from Lawndale which reflects on the loves that once were, or could have been, in seven songs that favor the second person voice. Joined by Brandon Couture and Rafe Soto, the trio of Elgin natives has set these often poignant lyrics to a musical sound that’s strikingly reminiscent of vintage soul. The material on this album was written mainly by Bednar.

“Tanner’s been writing a lot of songs,” said Couture, “and a lot of his stuff that we’ve been recording has a similar feel. So we put out something that’s going to sound really cohesive.” “These guys put in all their stuff, too,” added Bednar, “and we added horns and keyboards and backing vocals.” Their musical partnerships are another part of the synergy that gives the music its mature, natural quality. All three musicians have known each other for half their lives. In fact, Bednar and Couture put out their first record in 2010 as part of The Reverends, while they were still students at Elgin and Larkin High Schools. “I was a freshman and Tanner was in sixth grade,” begins the story as Couture tells it. Together with older brother Wyeth Bednar on drums, Chas Sirridge on guitar and George Rapidis on

Tanner started putting that together.” “One year Wyeth couldn’t come home, and we couldn’t find another drummer,” said Bednar. “Rafe had just moved into a place in Chicago with a bunch of other kids who all played instruments, so we just joined forces with them. And that’s how Rafe got into it because he drummed with us for that one show, and then we formed a band.”

Most bands rehearse at the drummer’s house, because the drums are much harder to move than guitars and amps. Holly, rehearses at Rafe’s place on Lawndale Avenue in Logan Square, and that’s where the album title came from. “When we were playing around with names, Tanner really liked the name Douglas because we grew up on Douglas Avenue in Elgin,” Couture says. “He liked the idea of incorporating a sense of place. So with Letters from Lawndale we still have a sense of place in the project, but it’s what we’re doing right now.” The creative heart of Letters may be Lawndale, but the bones and muscle were grown in Chicago recording studios where a host of guest artists contributed their talents to the tracks. And the studio isn’t just a means to an end, it’s a creative medium all its own. “A lot of the spontaneity of being in the studio is really cool,” says Couture. “I was playing around with a guitar part for a song, and then Tanner and our production engineer Trevor said

to throw on some delay, and a lot of distortion, and do a slide solo.” “We had two really great trumpet players on the record,” adds Bednar, “and we said, try some things out, it’s an experiment. And every time it turns out great.” Couture creates his own saxophone parts for a couple of songs. “It’s like putting together a puzzle — you’re finding the right pieces and where they go.” “In the studio you feel no pressure,” confesses Bednar. “You can make your mistakes and experiment. You can channel your passion for music and bring your ideas to life in it.” Ever since the 80’s new records have had an accompanying video, in order to bring the artist more exposure in another medium.

forward after recording an album is to string together a series of live performances. “The plan is to push content, become relevant, and then get out and play.” Couture assures us “it’s not just about trying to sell this record. I want people to like the record and say, hey I want to come and see these guys live. I want to have fun shows where tons of people come, enjoy the music, have a good night and tell their friends about us. Then they will want to come and see us.” Holly, has just set up an album release party for Saturday, September 1st at Rediscover Records. “Rich [Wagner] has always been fantastic to us, and an influence on us,” admits Bednar. “I always envisioned doing a little thing at the record store, listening to the album, maybe playing some songs, having some El Faro burritos there ...”

“I have some friends I grew up with here, and went to ChilYou can get a feel for Elgin’s dren’s Theatre of Elgin with, blue-eyed soul artists Holly, and now they have their own from streaming tracks at www. film company in LA,” Bednar bluemarketmusic.com or live said. “They flew back for a week studio footage from @DZ Records and we filmed from 5 p.m. to 4 on youtube.com. Follow them on a.m. for two nights.” The video Facebook @holly.band to find out was shot at the home where the what comes next. band rehearses. “We just invited our friends over and I’ll be the moon had a house party kind of You’ll be the sun theme, with Shine your love brightly on everyone a few really Your love’s like the ocean well thought So deep and wide out scenes. THROUGH MUSIC, THE HEART SOARS

Heartland Voices, an Elgin-based mixed choral ensemble, announces auditions for their 2018-2019, twentieth anniversary season. The semi-professional ensemble consists of 28 advanced singers who perform a variety of literature from renaissance to vocal jazz. There are openings in all sections for singers. More specifically, there are single openings for section leaders in the soprano, tenor and bass sections. The section leader positions are paid. Heartland Voices rehearse each Tuesday evening from mid-September through April, presenting three events—“Christmastide-Rejoice” on December 14, 15 and 16, 2018; a lighter fare at the annual Gala (music from the 1920s) on March 8 and 9, 2019; and spring concerts, “Keep a Song in Your Heart”, on April 26, 27 and 28. Auditions for all potential singers are by appointment. An audition time can be scheduled by contacting artistic director, Dr. John G Slawson, at chordirektr@att.net. Section leader auditionees should attach a resume to the email. The audition will consist of singing a solo selection of choice, showing the voice at its best. There will be other vocal exercises and sight-reading as part of the audition. Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you!

Grove Ave. 847.742.2411 gailborden. info Flying Creatures Elgin WHO: Flying Creatures/ Elgin, led by Chicago Artist Erin Cramer, will involve the creation of up to 20 unique creatures that will be on public exhibit as part of the 2018 Elgin Fringe Festival in Sept. Flying Creatures is open to young artists aged 7 to 23, and is FREE. No artistic experience necessary! WHAT: Flying Creatures/Elgin will involve instruction in skills that will be new to many, if not most of the participants. Some of these skills include designing for 3-D, building a 3-D creature, preparing a work of art to be shown long term in the outdoors, and learning special considerations for the flying creature’s audience such as size, safety, and aesthetic focal points. Each creature will be constructed using field tested methods, but the shape, color, and theme of each creature will be unique to the person or team who created it. This way each participant can take pride and have creative control over their creature, while ensuring no two creatures will be alike. WHEN: The creative process will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-6:30pm from July 31 through August 30. Artists are welcome to attend one or all of the sessions, and can drop-in as their schedule permits. All flying creatures will be on display at Carleton Rogers Park during Family Fringe, Saturday, September 8 from 10am to 2pm. WHY: In late Oct the creatures will be submitted for jury to the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events in Chicago. Our Elgin Flying Creatures will then have a chance to be included in the Flying Creatures on Wabash Initiative along with creatures from various schools and arts organizations across Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. These juried Flying Creatures will be hung on the street lamps near Millennium Park for up to a year. Each “creature” street lamp is slated to have a scanning square that will bring up the first name and home town and or/ sponsoring organization for each creature. This will be a great way to represent the creativity of Elgin’s youth in the big city. HOW: This project is made possible by support from the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission, Elgin Fringe Festival, Gifford Park Association, Erin Cramer Art, Side Street Studio Arts. 3.30p, Side Street Studio Arts, 15 Ziegler Court 847.429.2276 sidestreetstudioarts.org. The Clowder A group of cats is called a clowder. The Clowder is an alternative band coming out of Elgin, IL. Their unique yet classic sound is the result of the ever evolving music made by the bands chief songwriter, Frank Liston. Frank, also the lead singer and guitarist originally brought in Bobby Gancarz looking for a session drummer for a solo project. The two decided that their combined individual styles had potential as a band and so in early 2013 they started The Clowder. For the next couple years they adapted new techniques to sculp the gritty soulful style that can be heard on their debut album, Funky Mystery Music. 9p, Danny’s on Douglas, 231 Douglas Ave. 847.742.5400 dannyspizzaelgin.com

Try drawing in the mullions for these eight-over-eight windows. What belongs in the cupola on top of the roof? Did this building ever have one? Built by Joshua Wilbur and Edwin Reeves in 1855-56, this building was the original home of Elgin Academy, a private non-denominational and coed high school. The first floor was used as housing (for students and the principal’s family), classrooms were on the second floor and the third floor was unfinished. As the Academy expanded, this building fell into disuse and was donated to the City of Elgin in 1973. After extensive renovations, it became home to the Elgin Area Historical Society and its museum, filled with collections of Elgin history artifacts. See also: Wikipedia.org, and historicelgin.com

The Belvederes Raised on a healthy diet of Garage Rock, Power-Pop, Roots, Red-Hot Rockabilly, HonkyTonk and Soul -- John Ford (lead vocals, guitar), Joe Alonzo (drums, vocals) and Tyler Kock (bass guitar, vocals) came together during the early months of 2011, and presented a simple, clear-cut mission statement: Make people feel good. And when presented with such a task, we believe there’s nothing quite like the incredible gift of Rock & Roll music. We also firmly believe that if you’re gonna do this, you better do it right and give the audience MORE than what they paid for. Dynamic playing, tight three-part harmonies, dance floor-friendly energy and lots of love are what you can expect to experience at a Belvederes show. So get in on this rockin’ dance party! Nick Moss Band Chicago guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Nick Moss is a bona fide bluesman down to his soul, a 30-year veteran of the city’s take-no-prisoners blues scene. Moss paid his dues gigging in Chicago’s rough and tumble West and South side blues clubs under the tutelage of some of the city’s greatest blues luminaries. Blues Revue says, “Nick Moss is at the top of the blues world... ambitious and intense...He can play traditional blues with the best.” 9p, Danny’s on Douglas, 231 Douglas Ave. 847.742.5400 dannyspizzaelgin.com. Jamie Campbell - The Devil on the Wall Jamie Campbell relives the time he was kidnapped as a child in this solo performance that is part comedy, part storytelling, and 100% true. Travel back to 1991 as Jamie returns to what he calls the “greatest adventure of my life.” Harrowing at points, and astounding in others, the veteran comedian deftly walks the line between comedy and tragedy, exposing his own faults, and refusing to play the victim card. The production was the surprise hit of the KC Fringe Festival where it was the only solo show named “Best of Fest.” Out of the 92 participating productions, none received better reviews. Jamie Campbell is a nationally touring stand-up comedian, actor, and writer. His debut stand-up album, Tell Me You’re Proud of Me, debuted at #1 on Amazon’s comedy charts. In Chicago, where he began his career, he was named the city’s “Best Stand-Up Comedian” by The Chicago Reader. His film and television work includes appearances on NBC’s Chicago Fire and Pop TV’s Hollywood Darlings, as well as a stand-out performance in the indie feature Sex Ain’t Love. He has shared the stage or worked on projects with countless legendary names

Aubrey, on financial aid, came from a broken home, and wanted more than anything to distance herself from her past. And Jenny was a striver—brilliant, ambitious, and determined to succeed. As an unlikely friendship formed, the three of them swore they would always be there for each other. But twenty years later, one of them is standing at the edge of a bridge, and someone is urging her to jump. How did it come to this? Kate married the gorgeous party boy, Aubrey married up, and Jenny married the boy next door. But how can these three women love and hate each other? Can feelings this strong lead to murder? When one of them dies under mysterious circumstances, will everyone assume, as is often the case, that it’s always the husband?” 6.30p positiveimpactfv.org French Conversation Group Do you enjoy the French language and Francophone culture? Paco & Teresa rose very early on Sunday morning and drove to a suburb an hour away. They went to a morning mass with their extended family as three young cousins took their first communion. When the family celebration ended around sunset, Paco drove home in the twilight and they arrived after dark. On Monday morning, the doorbell rang. Paco muted the sound on his cable news broadcast and answered the door. “Mr. Cordero? I’m from the City’s Code Compliance department. We received a complaint about your fence, and I wonder if you have a few minutes to talk about it?” “My fence? Yes, of course.” Paco stepped outside and the two men walked over to the fence. “We get complaints all the time from people about suspected code violations, and anything that involves unauthorized construction or property lines, we give those priority,” the man said. “This complaint was specifically questioning the height and the placement of your fence.” Paco had never seen the man before. He examined the monogram on his polo shirt as he listened, and looked at the lettering on the white Ford Escape parked at the foot of the driveway. “I saw your permit was approved on May 17th, you used a licensed contractor and the project passed inspection on July 3rd. So there’s no problem with the fence. “ “That’s good to hear,” Paco confirmed. “My nephew built it.” “But when I checked the City

survey of this subdivision, I found that there’s an old road easement that runs back here,” he motioned toward the fence. “Between you and the next house.” “That was supposed to be a ... continuation of Victory Lane.” “It looks like somebody’s been working over there?” the man questioned. “Ya, the guy next door wants to put in a garden.” Paco started toward the corner where his fence met the sidewalk. The man followed. “He’s been clearing it for the last two months, but I think he’s done now for the season.” They reached the end of the fence and turned to look back toward Jax’s house. The sod was turned over and broken up across the entire 2400 square feet of Victory Lane. A gas-powered tiller with a tag from the rental yard was parked against the side of the house next to a bag and a half of powdered lime. “He must have just tilled that yesterday,” Paco gasped, and turned to look at the Code Compliance officer. “When we were out of town.” “Well, he can’t just take over the land and cultivate it without permission from the City,” the man explained. “Something like that would require a lease, and those are hard to get. It takes time ... and lawyers.” They ended with a few pleasantries and the man drove away. One afternoon about a week later, Toni set up a pair of sawhorses on the driveway in front of her garage. She let the kids watch as she put a coat of white primer on four plywood panels.

Once they dried, she had the kids take turns painting pictures on them. They painted colorful flowers and grass, with butterflies, inchworms, ladybugs, bunnies — and birds flying among fluffy clouds against a sunny blue sky.

Jax dropped the dog and scrambled to his bedroom to put on a pair of pants. “What’s going on?” Toni stirred.

On Saturday, Jax used his cordless drill to attach each painted panel to a post on his side of the new fence. They looked nice when the bright July sun shone on them for a couple of hours in the late morning, and the family took selfies with the artwork to post on social media.

Jax hustled outside in bare feet and strode toward the man as the second snowplow backed up onto Victory Lane. The first driver shut off his motor and jumped out, then took over shouting directions as the first man turned toward Jax.

After a minute, Jax turned his attention to a series of loud metallic clanks coming from the front yard. Once he muted the sound on the television, he could hear the sound of men’s voices and the rumble of diesel engines outside.

“Sir, are you the resident at 748 Front Street?” “Yes and this is my yard you’re in!” “Sir we have instructions from the City to park this equipment here on Victory Lane,” he said sternly. “And if you have any questions or concerns, you’re supposed to call the legal department.” The man handed Jax a business card. “But wh—” Jax sputtered, “Why are you doing this?” “Sir we were told to park some of the fleet here for the off-season while they clean and seal the floor at the depot. You got any questions, call that number.” As they talked, the third and fourth snowplows backed into Victory Lane and parked. Jax shouted objections and waved his arms, but the drivers ignored him. “Wait, you can’t just —” Jax gulped. “You gotta let me get back there and take down my kids’ artwork at least ...?!”

“What, those paintings?” he said sarcastically. “That’s your neighbor’s fence, right? If you ask me, they belong to him.”

He got up from his recliner, walked to the front window, grabbed the frantic Maltese and looked out. A city snowplow had backed up over the curb and was slowly maneuvering down the Victory Lane extension in reverse. A man was shouting directions to help the driver get as close to Paco’s fence as possible. Three more snowplows were idling on Front Street.

Monday morning around 7:30, the Maltese leapt on the back of the sofa and barked aggressively at something outside. Call for Art: Serial Tiles

Pockets or Purse by Mary Ellen Goodwill I go with pockets every time; then my arms are free and I am not burdened with a purse strap over my shoulder or across my chest. Cargo pants are still and always will be the bomb. Going into Chicago? Cargo pants and a seasonal top which also has pockets will do you just fine. Pockets that button? Sweet. Hidden, interior pockets? Oh, yeah, safe spots for cash and credit cards. Kleenex in pockets. A folded paper towel or two in pockets. Keys in pockets. Pen and paper ... Coins, not so much. Too burdensome. They go in the tip jar. One might be wearing as many as eight pockets: six with the cargos and another two with the top. Plenty for a jaunt into the city. A patting of pockets is typical behavior on the part of a pockets wearer. No shame there. Hmmm ... where is my comb? Where is my Burt’s Bees watermelon lip shimmer? Where is my traveling packet of facial wipes? Do not stop in the middle of the sidewalk on Michigan Avenue to pat your pockets. Someone will walk right up your heels and bump your shoulder. You could trip and fall as a result. A shopper or two might stop to check on you and someone will take a picture on their cell phone. For goodness sake, get inside a building, move to a corner of the lobby and pat your pockets there in safety.

Printing a large piece of art as a combination of smaller sheets is called “tiling.” BRAVO Magazine is seeking a piece of two dimensional visual art to feature in a series of 12 monthly issues beginning in January, 2019. Each month, we’ll print a 1/12 section of the art (a “tile”) as a single page in BRAVO. Readers will be encouraged to cut out and save each tile during the year. When the series is completed, the twelve sections can be assembled together to form a finished piece 37.5 x 33 inches in size. We are looking for original artwork in traditional or digital media, created at any size or orientation, so long as the proportions are 4:3. Light, bright saturated colors reproduce best on our paper. Elgin-related subject matter is preferred, with a composition that does not anticipate the tiling process. All proposals will be considered.

If you are in a check-out line, have your card in hand. There is no time for you to extricate it from the interior pocket without irritating other customers no matter how much you smile and apologize and feign a vague age-related malady. However, all of those are minor matters when you consider the freedom pockets afford: to wave at the gulls over the lake, to help a young mother whose baby stroller is caught in the gutter, to hug Bill Murray when you encounter him at Club Lago and on and on.

Elise Elliott Envision Elgin is a proposal for a thirteen-story mixed use mid-rise building that integrates the various programmatic elements and provides a place for Elgin residents and tenants to gather, celebrate, live, work and play. This project borders Prairie Street and Riverside Drive in order to animate the Riverwalk, address Festival park and release the increase in massing away from Grove Avenue. This creates a public plaza to display community art, enjoy the restaurant patio seating or gather after a performance. The massing is broken into three primary components; a three-story plinth that provides a scalable comparison to the Elgin context topped by a ten-story tower component

A quiet atmosphere perfect for small gatherings or groups of up to 20 guests.

that is split into two wings by a translucent glass atrium. The atrium space provides a consistent connection between the programmatic elements that shift between floors, allows space to gather and visually connect to the other floors and preview the technology behind the timber frame to the surrounding community. In order to impact and take part in a thriving community this infill project pushes past the standard by demonstrating and highlighting environmental stewardship through rainwater harvesting and the resourceful use of timber in the building’s structure which is on the leading edge of technological advancement.

Envision Elgin by Myles Lindberg.

Myles M. Lindberg Envision Elgin was a multi-story, multi-use building project that was to be in the heart of downtown Elgin along the Fox River. During the initial stages of development, the Fox River became the design driver which I used as an inspiration for my design development. I incorporated the perpetual flow of the river. The “Current” and “Movement”, was my inspiration to move from the rectangular corners and surfaces typically present in a traditional “box” or “square” building form, to a softer flowing form. This approach produced a more dynamic, and aesthetically interesting building exterior that served both form and functionality purposes. The base of the building protrudes out from to the primary mass of the building. My goal here was to create a much more welcoming street view environment, as the large building would be set back from the main streets. The base of the building allowed for shops and stores

to be along South Grove Avenue, which also allowed for the Restaurant to have views to the river along Riverside Drive. There is also a pavilion feature which houses a Coffee Shoppe located at the front of the building, near the corner of Prairie Street and South Grove Avenue. This circular design feature transitions the building mass to a more human scale, as it adjoins the public pedestrian paths which lead to the river front. The pavilion feature harkens back to a picnic shelter or gazebo which may be found in a park, or waterfront setting.

Creighton North The city of Elgin stands in a state of transition, seeking to return to its former activity and glory of the early twentieth century. A number of projects have been made in an attempt to revitalize the downtown area and once again draw pedestrian traffic and habitation. What this mission formally lacks is a capstone project, an objective that the Envision Elgin Tower seeks to satisfy. This structure seeks to unify the city in a mindset of

is achieved through a focus on revision, beginning with contextual and familiar forms of the Elgin landscape, and refining into something new and dynamic. The building block form is a further representation of the unification of disparate ideals into a cohesive composition. The resulting construct is the landmark identity that Elgin needs to fully establish its vision for tomorrow.

direct transit to downtown. This makes it a perfect destination for people wanting to escape the bustle and size of Chicago, but still want an active downtown. Due to Elgin’s past and present, Elgin’s future shows that the town is not going to stop growing so to add a high-rise would help bring people to the town by not only being icon for the city, but also the benefits of the tower’s multiple uses.

Ryan J. Pickhardt

With these three parts, the tower is also broken into three distinct zones, the base (representing the past) is strong and proportional to that of the other brick buildings that surround the new tower. At street level there are open spaces for new shops, a theater, and a gym. The open middle portion of the building (representing the present) is a restaurant surrounded by columns that sits on the 5th floor of the tower providing 360 views of Elgin. Lastly, the glassed top (representing the future) is residential which have micro units, studios, one and two bedroom apartments. At the top of the tower the mullions that wrap around the residential extend past the roof of the tower to mask the wind turbines set on top, but also to give the sense of motion that the building keeps going upward just like Elgin’s future.

Before considering what this building would even look like, the concept was going to be grounded in Elgin’s roots. This building would be iconic and visible throughout the town so to stray away from what Elgin stood, stands, and will stand for seems contradictory. The concept for what drove the final product combined the timeline of Elgin’s rich past, rapid present and bright future.

Elgin’s past was strong holding a legacy that has become almost forgotten. It once was a large component in the dairy industry, as well as having (at the time) the largest watch factory in the world. The history of Elgin holds a heritage of education and invention. Currently, Elgin is one of Illinois’s fastest growing cities and is the eighth largest city in Illinois.
