Cover Artists: BaM! (Bruce Bachelder and Mike Rende)

Grandpa’s Magical Fez, 2018 Acrylic on Board 20” x 24” Cover photo by Doug Hanson $400 “Check your ego at the door” is the driving thought when artists Bruce Bachelder and Mike Rende set out to create their collaborative art. The artists each start a painting and then hand it to each other to complete. Sometimes they follow the original vision for the painting, but it’s always more interesting when they don’t. Then something even more unexpectedly creative erupts onto the canvas.

Bruce Bachelder

Bruce graduated from Northern Illinois University with a degree in drawing. In college Bruce started doing what we referred to as “Art Fights”, in which two (or more) artists would collaborate on one painting in an attempt to expand their own understanding of composition, color use and artistic expression. So his next professional step seemed obvious — return to this method and push it to the next level. Bruce spends his days helping pets in need at an animal eye clinic or making art even more beautiful at a frame shop where he works part time. Do you need something professionally framed? If so, accept Bruce as your ‘Personal Framer.’ His nights and weekends are spent with his wonderful twins … and painting!

Mike Rende

Mike is also a Northern Illinois Graduate with a Painting degree. His artistic ‘fights’ with Bruce began back in college and continue to this day. He is a founding member of Oddball Art Labs, an organization that has curated many interesting group art shows in Elgin including “Calling All Robots,” “FezFest” and “Cheesecake: Seconds Please!” His work is often displayed in many group art shows at Side Street Studio Arts in Elgin, IL. Mike’s days are filled by his web design and development business, sitebyMIKE. If you are in need of a website, please feel free to contact him at sitebymike.com. His nights and weekends are filled with ART! See Grandpa’s Magical Fez at the Strange Imaginations and Other Perplexing Wonders exhibit at Elgin ArtSpace Lofts, July 13-21, 2018. Opening reception is July 13th, 6-10p, $5 suggested donation. For more BaM! art, go to dangerousbrains.com

If all goes well, by the time you are reading these words, my family will have officially “closed” on our house on Elgin’s east side. We’re buying the house we’ve rented for more than two years. We have the world’s best neighbors in a great neighborhood. We love our local park. We live next door to our elementary school. We’re an easy walk from downtown and an easy bike ride to our favorite grocery store, coffee shop, church, dentist, acupuncturist, hairdresser, and the world class Gail Borden Public Library. So, when we had saved up enough for a minimal down payment, we didn’t even look for another place to live. Apparently, we are part of a trend of which we were not entirely aware. In May, Danielle Braff wrote a piece for the Chicago Tribune titled “Chicagoland renters and buyers are itching for walkable suburbs. Enter ‘surban.’” Braff writes, “newbies to Chicago’s suburbs are increasingly stowing cars and slipping into walking shoes.” According to the article, rather than salivating over once popular sprawling lawns and McMansions, both buyers and renters are increasingly opting for proximity to restaurants, schools, and parks. These folks seem to be looking for a lower cost of living, a less densely-populated neighborhood, and the ability to still maintain their habit of walking to their favorite coffee shop on a weekend morning. The shift, coined as “surban” by one real estate agent to describe the seemingly hybrid suburban-urban preference, is about two decades old and growing. Even as a new Elginite, I

understand that while our city may now be part of the sprawling Republic of Chicagoland, we are also our own unique entity, founded within a few years of our larger sister to the east with all the major league sports teams. We have the historic downtown and Victorian-era homes to prove it. While our infrastructure for walking, biking, and public transportation is far from perfect, in Elgin we don’t have to invent a “walkable neighborhood.” We’ve had them since the nineteenth century — before the proliferation of the car changed the way developers built new neighborhoods. Now, some of our suburban neighbors are spending jaw-dropping amounts of money to create downtown centers, like Wheeling, IL who reportedly hopes to complete a $110 million project in 2018 to create a 16.2-acre downtown. Imagine downtown Elgin with $110 million dropped on it! We certainly wouldn’t have to start from scratch. Closer still, West Dundee and Carpentersville are partnering with Rouse Properties on a $40 million renovation project to Spring Hill Mall, and working on an “inspiration plan” for the area that, according to a Courier-News interview with West Dundee Community Development Director Tim Scott, would create a street network joined by sidewalks and paths “to create an environment that is pedestrian and cycling-friendly.” If you think that sounds nice, I’d like to introduce you to a little place I like to call downtown Elgin. I haven’t lived here long enough to tell you about the difficult years after the indus-

July 2018

tries and then department stores left, the crime rate rose, and most folks felt less safe walking downtown at night. I can only imagine what the riverfront looked like before the bike trail, the casino, and the library went in. I have lived here long enough to hear those stories though, and to get a sense of the comeback this town has made in increasing our economic opportunities and decreasing our crime rate. If you ask me, I would predict that our “city in the suburbs” will continue to grow and continue to attract folks looking for that “surban” reality. How will we be positioned for that future? How will that growth change or complement the gifts our city has to offer?

Aggregate and Cement In areas that have seen an influx of buyers and renters with increased purchasing power, those areas have seen both positive and negative effects. Increased demand for this type of housing increases property values as well as the incentive and resources with which to highly maintain properties and public services. At first, local residents benefit from the renovation of properties and improvement in public services. However, as property values continue to rise, low-income renters can quickly be priced out and even face mass eviction by property owners looking for more affluent renters. At first, local businesses benefit from the influx of dollars but as property values and rent rise, local businesses can also find themselves priced out. Because of persistent and historic racism in the United States that we have as yet to overcome, lower income renters are still

BRAVO

more likely to be people of color and affluent renters are still more likely to be white. Therefore, as property values rise in a given neighborhood the racial diversity is typically drained. This process is referred to by some as “community displacement” or by others as “gentrification” and can cause trauma to individuals and communities. In my mind, it represents a theft of the benefits of neighborhood revitalization from the folks who could use it the most. I don’t know enough to say at what point along a continuum Elgin would be, with regard to if and how such a process is at play in our city. I do know that there are other cities who wish they had planned ahead to offset the worst effects of displacement by maintaining a mix of low and middle income housing stock in their downtown areas, and took other measures to care for the well-being of all residents of the community. I want Elgin to survive and thrive economically but not at the cost of my neighbors or the racial and economic diversity of my neighborhood. One of the original drivers in the development of suburbs was the longing to get away from each other. Suburbs were billed as places where buyers could be the kings of their own sprawling castles (yes, kings) and not have to interact with folks who weren’t like them. In this model of design, housing was designated for one part of the city, businesses another area, and recreation another. By design, all of it was dependent on the private automobile for access, ensuring minimal incidental social interaction or exercise. City planners of the day believed that the suburbs would lead to greater levels of health for their residents. But 40 or more years later, obesity rates and isolation have only risen as suburbs have proliferated. What public health researchers have found since then is that our individual long-term health can have a lot to do with the social connectedness of the communities in which we live, and that different residential design can either help or hinder social cohesion.

In his book Happy City, Charles Montgomery catalogues cities across the globe that by most measures can be defined as “happy.” What he found is that life satisfaction rises with social cohesion, or literally how much you trust your neighbors. The ability to get to know your neighbors rises when buildings are mixed use, car traffic is light and slow, nature thrives, meeting spaces are available, and infrastructure supports active transportation like walking, biking, or public buses and trains. We are happier and healthier, Montgomery argues, with the research to back it up, when we are connected to each other.

Concrete Examples When I was growing up in rural Pennsylvania, I dreamed of having sidewalks. Maybe it was Sesame Street. Maybe it was Mr. Rogers. But I always wanted to be able to walk to my corner store, have conversations with our friendly mail carrier, or ride my bike to school — and maybe break out in a “letter-of-theday” song while doing it! I loved the Pennsylvania mountains and countrysides but I longed for more independence and an easier connection with my community. As an emerging adult, I had the opportunity to live and travel all over the country. In the first five years of our marriage, my husband, Parker, and I had lived in five states. Work and school choices had taken us from the remote banks of the Neuse River, outside of Arapahoe, North Carolina to the densely populated hills of Berkeley, California and then across the plains, farm towns, and small cities of the Midwest. Having sampled these diverse locations, we found, like many others, we preferred the ability to walk and bike everywhere for the health, social, and environmental benefits. So, the last time we were ready to move, we knew we wanted to live in a walkable, bikeable neighborhood. In fact, in an interview for the pastoral position in which I now serve, the search committee asked how I would get to know my new city. I said that while I wanted to prioritize being home for the bedtimes of my small children over serving on every

4.7

committee in town, I would plan to walk around town with my dog meeting the neighbors and getting to know the baristas. They eventually hired me but they also laughed at me that day, letting me know I might have overestimated the coffee shop-rich, chatty, sidewalk-using urban character of their community. Little did any of us know that eventually my husband would become one of a growing number of downtown baristas and that I would blossom into a full-blown bike-commuting nut in ways that would indeed introduce me to lots of new neighbors. I know my experience is not the reality for everyone in Elgin. There are parts of town that feel much more suburban than others with cul-de-sacs and strip malls that typify suburban living. There are corners of Elgin, too, that are highly dense but also not close to fully stocked grocery stores or other amenities, just like in disadvantaged urban settings. There are attractive advantages to both those realities of course, like proximity to more wildlife or the low cost of rent, and I think there are infrastructure measures that can ameliorate the downsides of both those experiences. Yet, I also know there are large parts of Elgin today that already do indeed hit an in-between spot, where you can get to know your neighbors and walk to the corner store. While I think “surban” is an awkward term, I do think there is a unique reality in our city with unique possibilities — possibilities that are increasing, and increasingly sought after regardless what you call them. Elgin has its share of problems. Every place does. Yet, after a day of bike riding with neighbors from across town, eating Cook’s ice cream, and catching fireflies in the front yard with kids from my neighborhood, I have a hard time imagining how my family could be any happier any place else. I’m so grateful to have the chance to own one little plot of this city, which makes me so happy, and to share these streets and sidewalks with all my neighbors. — KST

So many college theater departments play it safe with happily-ever-after musicals. Elgin Community College Musical Theatre cracks the mold with a meaty musical, “Spring Awakening,” July 27 through Aug. 5 in the Second Space Theatre. Andy Bero, an English and drama teacher at Dundee-Crown High School, admits an existential musical is the perfect show for a self-professed “theater geek” to direct. Bero previously directed “Avenue Q,” another edgy musical, at Elgin Community College. Based on a play, written by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening tells the story of teenagers tearing away from their parents while exploring their sexual freedom in 19th Century Germany. On Broadway, the show won eight Tony Awards and featured Lea Michele, who also performed in “Glee,” the hit TV series. Winner of eight Tony Awards, Spring Awakening features a

driving rock’n’ roll score written by Steven Sater and composed by Duncan Sheik. During his five years at Dundee-Crown, Bero directed 15 student productions. “I grew up in these theaters, trained on these stages, and studied with these professionals,” Bero said. “The musical theater landscape is changing, and Elgin Community College has recognized that. Marc Beth, the show’s producer, is giving young actors a chance to tell stories that are important to them.” Spring Awakening deals with many sensitive subjects, including sexual abuse, suicide, and homosexuality. The turmoil of teenagers during their sexual awakening explodes in the rugged rock’ n’ roll score. To underscore the intimacy of the story, the actors will perform on a stage that thrusts into the audience. Interpretive dances will also punctuate dramatic moments.

with her mother has profound consequences for Wendla, who is a virgin, and is dating Melchior, who is sexually experienced. During an encounter in the woods, Melchior becomes aggressive, and lines of sexual consent become blurred. “Wendla represents the innocence of this show, so she has the biggest fall,” said Khwaja, a Round Lake resident. “She’s naïve, but she is also very smart. Her innocence is from her lack of knowledge.” Bero said sexual consent is the centerpiece of the Me-Too movement, and this play will continue that conversation. “Men are not there for women’s pleasure, and women are not there for men’s pleasure,” Bero said. “ ‘Spring Awakening’ is an essential reminder of how far we’ve come and how far we still need to go.” Sofia Khwaja. Source: twitter.com “The music and story are totally entwined,” Bero said. “It’s almost like a cinematic experience. The music is such an important piece in the story because it’s legitimate rock ‘n’ roll. The angst and confusion of teenagers is best expressed in rock ‘n’ roll. “The story is told 100 percent from the viewpoint of teenagers,” Bero emphasized. “Younger audiences will love it because they will hear their struggles sung back to them. Young people love the story because these are the conversations teenagers want to have with adults.”

During “Spring Awakening’s” auditions, 75 actors competed for 15 roles. Bero is not surprised so many actors turned out because Spring Awakening is rarely performed in college theaters. “I tend to do challenging shows,” Bero admitted. “I never make it easy on myself. I always do my research. I look at productions that have been done before. Then I walk away from that and do it my own way.”

Khwaja, 17, has embraced Wendla. “This is a daring voice for me as an actress,” she said. “I look at the motivations of the character. I always start with the text. If there is something in the text I can’t relate to, I try to find something. I relate to her feelings of angst and uncertainty.” As Moritz Stiefel, a high-strung teenager, who is struggling with school, Mitchell Schaeflein also digs deeply to reveal his character’s pain. “The director says to try to think about that moment in your life when your life was falling apart,” revealed Schaeflein, a Rolling Meadows resident. “The songs take the audience into the minds of the characters. You want to give each song its due, and you can’t phone it in. You can’t rest on your laurels.” Bero said a strong theme in this show is that teenagers are in turmoil because adults will not talk about sex. “When parents are uncomfortable discussing sex with their children, it doesn’t mean their children are not exploring that situation on their own,” Bero said. “I think it’s unfair to hold young people to moral standards which we’re uncomfortable discussing.” As a musical theater fanatic, Bero loves directing such a complex, story-driven musical.

Originally, the show was presented as a rock concert on Broadway. Anchored in its timeless themes, Spring Awakening evolved into a dramatic, story-based musical. The show demonstrates that teenagers in 19th Century Germany had the same questions about sex that teenagers have today.

“This show will open up a conversation about sex, suicide, and sexual consent,” he said. “We want to preserve the story and respect the audience. It’s an amazingly dense piece of theater that’s also fun. Our audience trusts us. This material is in good hands.”

The show begins when Wendla Bergmann asks her mother to explain where babies come from. Her mother is too afraid and embarrassed to give an honest answer. Wendla’s struggles are similar to other characters, who learn about sex on their own, and often with disastrous results. Sofia Khwaja, cast as Wendla, said the awkward conversation her character has

The 35-year-old director cast actors he felt could bring truth to their characters. “I looked for actors who could stand in silence,” Bero said. “I looked for genuine honesty. The audience can smell insincerity a mile away.”

Perhaps, they would make it a mission “to give children their wings to soar.” That’s exactly what one woman of Elgin (along with many special others) is doing. Risé Jones honors the memory of her late father, Charles Hamilton Jones, through a journey of art, expression, and development. It all began in 1996, with her late mother, Ann Jones. “Back in 1996, I co-founded [Hamilton Wings] with my mom; she was principal of Garfield Elementary School for over 20 years,” said co-founder and executive director Jones. “When my father passed away, we wanted to have a way to have a living memorial for him. His middle name was Hamilton, so that’s where the ‘Hamilton’ [of the organization’s name] comes

from and the ‘Wings’ from the transformative effect of the arts to support young people in their family’s development.” It is no secret that Hamilton Wings strives for the children of Elgin, IL to be able to explore their creativity, minds and talents with an “overall goal to promote learning and leadership through the arts,” said Jones. “We promote leadership development and academic readiness through use of, and access to the arts.” “Our driving mission is to give children the wings to soar. Really taking and harnessing the power of the arts to transform, and having young people participate in that as contributors not only to their own development, but to the broader community through their art expression and exploration of the arts,” said Jones. Hamilton Wings is inclusive to all children of Elgin, with a “focus on the schools served by District U46 and since we’re an In-Residence Ensemble of Elgin Community College, [it also includes] families of District 501.” Art is at the forefront for children who are a part of this special group, which “allows them to express themselves, to explore, to take positive risks, to assume personal responsibility as well as social responsibility, which we emphasize a lot,” said Jones.

Although Hamilton Wings holds plenty of productions to showcase such expression, the skills children use to craft such arts are ultimately building blocks for the fundamentals of life.

“As they’re doing all of that, they’re building skills. They’re practicing, they’re rehearsing; it’s not just on the stage, it’s what they’re rehearsing in life,” said Jones. A form of entertainment is rewarding, but not without the learning experiences and skills developed by coming together to bring ideas to fruition, according to Jones. “That’s what we say about the SCORE! production. We’re always so happy that something happens at the end of this nine months of work, but really, it’s about what the students create together — how they learn, how they come out of their shells, or make friendships that might not otherwise occur, maybe discover something in themselves. We always used to call [the opera] a by-product; what happens in themselves and in the families is really our primary goal.” Jones, an Elgin native, “always felt so blessed growing up in Elgin.”

BRAVO

What can the audience expect? Well, Jones can’t necessarily say… but for good reason! “Part of it is...we don’t know! That’s the fun part,” laughs Jones. She breaks down the process behind the original opera production.

“Every year we have students come together — about 35 core students this go-around — as well as a small chorus supporting the students’ work. They come together all the way back in October to learn about the different art forms that comprise opera, and they get all engaged, as a group, in this collective, storytelling process. It involves idea generation, proposal development, and mainly ends up in a story that they write together. “Then, the students learn about empathy, so they’re able to get into each of the characters and create poems. Depending on what idea (or we call it ‘story nugget’) that they decide to go with, it often entails some level of research, through which they’re understanding an issue better.”

“I know [Elgin] is gaining popularity, now, for the arts and Jones further expands on her we’re so grateful for publications team who willingly works with like BRAVO that have really the children in order brought the arts to aid this process in to the forefront. allowing their ideas Even growing up, and creativity to not it’s always been only come to life, but so rich in the arts to shine on stage. and we just wanted to make sure “They work with all young people Deanna Cates, who could participate serves multiple roles in that and be with the organization, able to experience and she supports that.” To take on the young people in a mission as big writing the simple as a community, John Rot. melodies that get sent Jones has a team Source: johnrot.net to our orchestrator, of superb help. But they can delve more in depth in one of the team meetings around story, music, or dance. We have a two-week camp that happens right before the production in which we pull it all together. As for SCORE!, the long history of the opera production consisting of 5th-8th graders has staged original masterpieces every single year. “We’re on our 18th original opera,” said Jones. “This year we do have some students returning from the previous year to participate — in the past it was a new group each time. It’s a brandnew story ... our first science fiction story. We’re doing some mask-making, looking at some ideas for set design, and things

like that.” Jones shares great gratitude for the director of the opera, who aids in the execution of the children’s vision. “We’ve been so fortunate over many, many years to have Scott Ferguson join us again this year, as our director. He’s from Chicago where he’s directed many productions. SCORE! is a challenging thing to pull all together, and he just has such a talent for attending to all of the students’ ideas and opinions and helping to tell a story. The director’s role is to tell a coherent story on stage, and yet he is so inclusive and respectful of all students’ ideas and contributions. It’s a very challenging position to hold so we’re always so grateful.” Catch the original 2018 production at ECC’s Art Center in July. Jones expresses her final thoughts and gratitude in the following statement: “Hamilton Wings is an In-Residence Ensemble of Elgin Community College. We are so very proud of this status and are so grateful to ECC for all of their support along with our major funders for SCORE!: the Elgin Township and the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission! We couldn’t do our work without their generosity and vision!” — VP

Sat.Jun.30 Matt Vrba with Rachele Lynae Perhaps the only working musician in the world who’s resume includes walking 3200 miles across America, Algonquin Native and award winning, Nashville based artist Matt Vrba, is adding yet another accomplishment onto his already impressive list, the release of his seventh commercial album, “The Fall” in October of this year. Since the release of his first album (Everywhere In Between) in 2004, Vrba has crisscrossed America, The Caribbean, and Europe dozens of times, logging over 2500 shows at venues ranging from a sold-out performance at Chicago’s House Of Blues, and LA’s famed Viper Room, to huge festivals such as The North Beach Festival in San Francisco, and The Bite of Seattle. Throughout all his touring, Vrba has created a name for himself as one of the most charismatic and entertaining live performers around. Oh yeah, and he’s a pretty darn good songwriter too. An old soul, who’s logged more life experience than most people twice his age, Vrba writes from the perspective of someone who has been there, and it translates over flawlessly into beautifully catchy tales of heartbreak, highway, and occasionally, mustaches. IDEA BOX

Create a stained glass design for the church’s windows. What symbol is missing, that most other churches have? What might be seen in this sky on the night of July 4th? This church, designed by George Hunter and his nephew W.W. Abell, was built in 1891 during a period of rapid growth in Elgin. Both of them worked for the Elgin National Watch company, and they designed this building in the shape of a pocket watch (as seen from the heavens). The people of this church were always social activitists, and after the turbulent late 1960’s the building was bombed. A 1977 fire forced the congregation to move, and the architecturally significant building has been used by other congregations since that time. © M.E. Richmond Art. All rights reserved. Unlike other ghost tours, this is not a theatrical performance where we carry lanterns and dress up in period costumes. We offer you a view of the reality of afterlife activities, the paranormal equipment and techniques we use are how we separate the fact from fiction. We explore the cemetery and allow the residents of the cemetery to come forward and make their presence known to you. Nothing is staged or pre-set, you experience things in real time, right along with us. This is not a tour for children. These tours are for the mature audience. Those of us that are over 21, or who have become of the age to start to question what happens after we pass over. NO ONE under the age of 16 is allowed on our tours. 16 and above allowed, only with a paid Adult. Come out, have fun, and see who may make their presence known to you. Independence Day would fall on a Friday that year. Jax took a full week of vacation from work, and the family drove north to a lakeside cottage to spend time with Toni’s relatives. The dog went with them.

For the rest of that day and the next, they lowered thirty-one 4 x 4 inch square posts into the ground, each carefully positioned in a hole, filled with concrete, four feet apart, five feet high and perfectly plumb.

Things were quiet on both sides of the Victory Lane extension Monday morning, until a crew arrived at Paco and Teresa’s house in a flatbed truck loaded with lumber. Two men hopped out, and shook hands and talked quietly with Paco on the driveway. They looked over some large papers, pointed toward Victory Lane, and nodded in agreement. The men unloaded tools from a chest behind the cab.

On Wednesday they bolted on crossbeams, and began attaching pickets on Paco’s side. On Thursday, the construction was done and the fence received a coat of stain. As the sun went down, a long, wide shadow fell across Victory Lane for the first time in a hundred years.

One set up a tripod on the Front Street sidewalk at the corner of Victory Lane and attached a construction grade surveying instrument. His helper walked to two other corners of Paco’s lot and held up a reflector. After each measurement, the man made a mark on the cement, and moved the tripod a bit.

“What do you think he’s going to say?” she asked. “They won’t be expecting to see this when they come home.”

The helper found the metal stake in Jax’s back yard and held the reflector there. After a few minutes they put away the equipment and came back with hammers and lengths of pipe and a spool of string. One man drove a pipe into the ground in the back yard, where it bordered Victory Lane, and tied the string to it. The other drove a pipe into the ground near the sidewalk. They pulled the string tight and tied it to the second pipe, marking Paco’s property line.

On Friday morning, Teresa placed a pot of red, white and blue petunias on the front stoop, and Paco flew the flag from a bracket mounted on the porch.

“He’s ... on his own, he knows that. He chose to go his own way,” Paco sighed. “But now it’s going to be my turn to explain.” Jax and Toni pulled in early Sunday evening and unloaded the car. Except for pausing a few seconds to look over at the new fence, they acted as if nothing was different. The kids did not seem to notice. Jax came out to walk the dog after the long ride in the car, and headed down the sidewalk toward Victory Lane. He stopped on his side of fence to examine the craftsmanship, closing one eye to observe whether the fence was completely straight from end to end. It was. The Maltese urinated on the end post.

July 2018

He stepped around to the other side and saw Paco in his garage filling a cardboard box with small scraps of lumber, and watched until they made eye contact. “Jaxon!” It was the first time in weeks they had come this close to communicating. “Stay there, I’d like to talk with you.” The Maltese barked and pulled on his leash as Paco approached, carrying the box. “What — ... what’s with the fence?” Jax demanded. “Remember the day we met, you asked about the hedge and I said we valued it for privacy? You said, like good fences make good neighbors? That’s all this is. It’s a good fence.” Jax paused. “I thought you’d change your mind after I did all the work to clear this area.” “I tried to change your mind, too.” Paco countered. “Maybe we both have what we want now. Your family is safe — no coyotes are coming through here!” “I notice you put up the fence boards facing your house, so I have to look at the back.” “I wish I could afford to finish both sides, but ... I wasn’t planning to build a fence this year.” Jax interrupted an awkward lull in the conversation by correcting the dog. “How about you and Toni decorate your side,” Paco lilted. “You can put up your own pickets, or paint it, or hang garden tools, whatever you want, on your side. If you want to connect your own fence to enclose your back yard for the dog, that’s okay, too.” Jax grunted.

BRAVO

Twenty minutes later, as he returned to the house with the dog and a plastic bag of poop, Jax noticed the dark shadow spreading out across his future garden. Once inside, he grumbled to Toni, “That fence can’t be legal. It’s too high, it’s too close to the property line ... you have to have a permit to put up a fence — inspections and everything. He couldn’t have done all that inside of a week.”

41

Destination DUNDEE a nonprofit organzation

Toni was half listening. “Did you ask Paco about it?” “No, but I’m calling code enforcement tomorrow. He’s gonna have to take it down.” On Monday morning, Jax reached someone at the City’s Code Compliance office and explained the situation. They asked for an address. “I’m at 748 Front Street, and he’s my next door neighbor. Paco Cordero ...” Thinking for a few seconds, he added “actually he’s not my next door neighbor, he’s on the other side of Victory Lane, in the 800 block.” When the code officer found a name in a database, Jax said “Nope, I don’t know any Francisco Cordero ...” A few seconds later he agreed, “Okay, whatever, that’s him.” They opened case number 18-0309, titled “Illegal Fence.” An inspector was scheduled to visit the site on the following Monday. BRAVO serial fiction presents an original short story by a local writer in a series of short sections of approximately 1000 words each. A new chapter of “Victory Lane” will appear each month from April to August 2018.

Paco held out the box. “Here, you want these scraps for your fire pit? It’s left over from the fence.”

To read previous chapters, go to www.marqueemedia.net/victorylane

“You get rid of it,” Jax growled as he turned around and headed the opposite direction with the Maltese. Paco put the box down by the curb with his trash cans.

From This River Town

Lightening the Load by Mary Ellen Goodwill Today, let us look in on Barb Nonetheless who can be seen walking around her house with a buckwheat pancake, folding it and taking large bites. Barb is considering what she will part with today, subscribing as she does to the practical advice, “Throw or give away something every day (not including garbage).” Hmmm, will she tackle the what-not drawer of birthday cake candles, crock pot recipes, grocery receipts, band-aids, bread twisties and spare keys on ribbons? Will she consider any other kitchen drawer for that matter? No, she will not. Boring are they. Boring, boring, far too everyday. The pancake a glutinous glob in her stomach, Barb drinks a glass of water, popping various vitamins and herbal supplements as she goes along. Major belch. Continued searching. The front hall closet is out because it requires her getting up on a chair. THAT will not happen. The two toy shelves low and accessible to any little ones who happen to visit? Nah, that would require dusting and she knows that dusting two shelves will lead to dusting a window ledge, a side table, the television, the light bulbs and the picture frames. Forget about it. To simply throw or give away one thing.

To no avail would be their cries.

Just ONE THING. In an instant of insight, Barb proclaims, “Nicole! I’ll give something to Nicole!” Nicole is her next door neighbor, her friend, her buddy. True, Nicole recently held a yard sale and, true, Nicole is presently cleaning out her garage and, true, Nicole really does not need a thing yet Barb is certain she can locate just the item to please her young friend today. In the upstairs back room linen closet beneath a moth-eaten quilt and a cardboard box of outdated Simplicity dress patterns, she finds it — the brown canvas bag which had served her as a briefcase of sorts back in the seventies. It is trimmed in faded rose and green batik and sports a flat front pocket. Inside, she correctly remembers, are three handmade cloth bookmarks from Mindanao. Nicole is a reader, particularly of historical fiction, and such a gift will be pleasing and appropriate. More than that, it will relieve Barb of her burden. Unfortunately, after discovering the bookmarks, as clean and fresh as if they had been purchased yesterday, Barb also discovers numerous letters addressed to her own self decades ago. Alas, letters from the past! At this news, savvy readers want to cry out, “No, Barb, do NOT look at the letters! Put them aside or, better yet, make THEM the items you throw away today.”

Barb tucks a prettily woven bookmark into her shirt pocket, stacks all the envelopes of letters between the arm of the chair and the arm of herself and chooses the first one for perusal. Surprise, it is a passionate (and very well written) love letter with an indecipherable signature. The person is recounting days and assignations of yesteryear. “Who is this?” she wonders. “Who WAS this?” Three quarters of the way down on the first page (single spaced), the answer clicks in. Oh, it’s _____! She puts the letter in her lap and gazes off toward the west. “Such intensity!” she marvels while leaning over to rifle through the other envelopes. At this point, dear readers, we needs must respectfully turn away. Yes, turn away, leaving to her own devices our newly nostalgic Barb Nonetheless who, today, has discovered far, far more to give or throw away than she had ever bargained for.

Miss Goodwill’s novels about Beatrice Francis Convey are available at Town House Books in St. Charles, on Amazon and at Gail Borden and ECC libraries.

The Healing Gallery That was a favorite piece of advice from George Shipperley, the accomplished painter and teacher known by artists throughout the Fox Valley. He said to one of his students, “Lillian, in your Tuscan paintings, you’re just ... you’re there.” He was talking to Lillian Pagni, an Elmwood Park native now living in Hampshire, who indeed was there in Tuscany where so many of her relatives still live. “My roots are in Tuscany, it’s where I come from,” she said. “And as fate would have it, I lost my husband when we were there.” That was 1998.

“It was like a dream of mine,” she recalls about the Healing Gallery she established in 2009. “I wrote a letter to the CEO Bill Brown and then met with him. Thank goodness he appreciated art; he was kind of in my corner.” The hospital designated one wall on the first floor, opposite the Healing Garden, during a period of renovations in the main lobby.

While some art galleries cater to artists seeking a place for radical free expression, the Healing Gallery, as it’s name implies, exhibits art that offers an experience of wellness and serenity for patients and visitors. Natural landscapes, flowers, wildlife, abstract compositions and spiritual subject matter are welSt. Francis come, but anything disturbing or provocative is not in line with the gallery’s (nor the hospital’s) purpose. Many of Lillian’s own paintings are part of St. Joe’s permanent collection, but her art has been featured in the gallery as well.

The little boy was just amazed at it. He went home, got up the next morning and said he wanted to go back to the hospital — why? To see the animals!” As the gallery’s de facto Director (“a committee of one,” she says), Lillian gets help from Mike Smith of the Presence St. Joseph Hospital staff. “Mike and I always hang and take down,” she says.
