Comic Phenomenologists by Dorothy Turay Think comics are just for kids? Maybe it’s been a while — a long, long while — since you’ve tuned into the world of comic book art. The styles of illustration can be startling, modern and complex — Art with a capital “A” — with characters to match their intensity. Without a doubt, comics artists are highly trained and devoted to making their art come to life on the page, be it digital or hard copy. The creativity of building characters and envisioning their environment, and adding depth to personalities and situations demands multi-faceted artistry. Comics are fun to read and look at, but it takes months, even years, of hard work to make them. No matter what the designated age, comics continue to evolve and reflect what’s happening in our society. Several new school comic artists with Elgin connections share what is new and what stays the same in the comic art world.

Kevin Kearney Kevin Kearney holds a BA from Western Illinois University and a BFA from Southern Illinois University. He has also completed courses through The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Arts and Comics Experience. Kevin currently designs and illustrates for the multi-channel marketing company RRD. His design work can also be found in his contributions for the multi-Eisner award-winning AUAD Publishing, including Henry Patrick Raleigh: The Confident Illustrator and an upcoming release detailing the life and work of Austin Briggs. Kevin lives in Elgin’s historic district with his wife. In his spare time, Kevin serves on the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission and co-hosts the podcast Holy Brocast Batman!, the audio commentary for the Batman ‘66 T.V. show. To see more of his artwork, you can follow him on Instagram or Twitter @ComicsByKevinK or visit his website to purchase original art or prints at www.ComicsByKevinK.com.

Our Cover Artist: Kevin Kearney Kearney, whose work graces BRAVO’s cover this month, lives in Elgin. He is a jack-ofall-trades who is adept at many aspects of the comic arts, from advertising to illustration, coloring and penciling, posters to podcasts, even icons for Microsoft. Kearney believes comics are useful in many areas, citing “education, advertising ... [or a] set of Ikea instructions.” Holy Batbro, the man is busy! It stands to reason that Kearney admires artists who do all or most of the work themselves. He admires Sean Gordon Murphy, who is “currently writing, drawing and inking a Batman series for DC [Comics].” As a kid, he liked X-Men and the artist Jim Lee, who was the major pencil artist for the comic. When Lee and other artists left to form Image Comics, Kearney became a fan.

Kearney noticed a change in comics starting in 1986 with the publication of Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns. Aimed at a mature audience, darker, more psychological themes emerged and opened the door for serious subjects, thus ushering in a new age of comic book art.

[and] ... [getting] your face out there.” Kearney finds his audience is not one select age group but a diverse group of people. Instagram is working well for him now, and Comic-Cons are essential for meeting his fans and sharing new art.

Like fine art, there are distinct comics “ages”: Golden (1930s-’50s), Silver (1950s-‘60s), Bronze (1970s-‘80s). The 1990s brought the Iron Age, in keeping with the metals theme, but others refer to it as the Modern Age. Source: tyrellcannon.com Whatever it’s called, comic art today has more resources than ever before. A self-confessed “process junkie,” Kearney is open to new ideas and inspirations. He uses a “30-year-old drafting table with a T-square” in tandem with a digital Wacom tablet. He believes “a nice hybrid of both can be extremely beneficial.” Collaboration with others is “very fulfilling and keeps me honest if something isn’t working.” In addition to being a creative force, comic artists today typically launch their work online and do their own marketing. Self-promotion is “all about finding the right outlet

Renaissance Man: Tyrell Cannon

A graduate of the School of the Art Institute, Tyrell Cannon was born in Elgin but now lives in Chicago, where he creates his own comic books and is also the co-editor for Speculative Relationships, an analogy of science fiction and romance comics.

More inspiration comes from 20th century artists working in a science fiction/abstract style, such as H.R. Giger (Alien), Zdzislaw Beksinski (abstract/gothic), and Paul Lehr (Sci-fi painter: War of the Worlds, R is for Rocket). Cannon also gives props to movie directors Sam Raimi (producer of Poltergeist, Evil Dead ), John Carpenter (Director/writer: Halloween), Shinya Tsukamoto (Director/ actor: Vital, Tetsuo, the Iron Man), and Terrance Malick (Director/ writer: Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey) for their influences on his work. The variety of Cannon’s influences are evident in the comics he produces: Victus, Simon, and Gary. One look at the covers of Victus tell the story of his fine arts background. Here you will find Renaissance style designs in the form of a robed man (#1) and a Green Man type cover (#2). Issue #3 has a more modern feel, but the Christ-like figure and shrouded mourners bring back thoughts

He is a renaissance man when it comes to plot, styles, and characters. Citing Michelangelo as a favorite artist, Cannon sees him in terms of being “probably the best comic book artist.” Other Renaissance artists of note include Raphael, and Albrecht Durer, and Hendrick Goltzius. Then there is Simon, featuring a well-muscled male with no mouth who expresses philosophies and emotions. Cannon confesses that Simon is “one of [his] first and most personal characters,” whom the artist uses “as a sort of universal cypher for exploring my ideas about the comics art form.” Indeed, Simon is by turns deconstructed, made into a boxer, and is seen wandering contemplatively through a forest. Recently, two more writers joined the Tango gang, James Frey and Henry Frias Leon, who brings his talents as a film director, screen writer, and producer. Perez’s interest in comic art began “as an obsession.” He had two stories in mind and wrote them down a couple of decades ago. In the first, a zombie infested world brings humanity to the brink of extinction until a few survivors fight back to defeat the undead. The other story tells of a discontented man who is abducted by a “celestial entity” who gives him a fighting chance to obtain “a god-like power.”

The Tango Comics crew mixes digital and traditional methods to produce their art. The stories’ thumbnail sketches, outlines, pencils, and storyboards are done by hand. Once the inker takes over, he decides whether to use digital, such as Photoshop, or hands-on techniques to get the desired effects.

Kane (Batman); Silver Age: Steve Ditko ( (Spiderman co-creator), John Romito, Jr. (Marvel Comics); Bronze Age: Frank Miller (The Dark Knight Returns), Alex ( Ross (Justice), Eric Powell (The Goon). ( These are just the tip of the iceberg, as Perez graciously acknowledges many others too numerous to mention here.

Then comes the dialogue and narration, which is saved to a Word or Google document. Perez concludes, “It’s all about having fun and leveraging the methods and tools which make one most comfortable and happy.” He adds, ” [D]igital is far more forgiving ... It doesn’t detract from the required skill and artistry; it’s just an efficiency enabler.” Perez draws inspiration from a wide variety of cartoonists from all eras of comic art. A few of Perez’s favorites are: Golden Age: Wally Wood (Mad), (Mad Harlan Ellison (writer), Bob

Todd Tuttle is the creator of TNT Comics, an internet-only distribution. He eschews the hard copy world in favor of online comic series. Tuttle “[hasn’t] released a print product in decades ... It’s mostly about the Internet these days.” His newest creation, TNTeens, has an intriguing plot that hinges on a number of creepy situations within the first 20 pages: mysterious fog, alien ships, ghostly figures. Another is an innovative mobile device comic: “The UNIGUARD mobile strip was originally designed for mobile phone users in Germany.” Both series are accessible, gratis, on the TNT website. Tuttle’s love for comics began in the Silver Age with The Avengers, The Fantastic Four, The Teen Titans, and The Justice League of America. Encouraged by his 7th grade English teacher, Tuttle knew that comics were his future. From homemade comics to his impressive internet website, Tuttle’s dream became

a reality. Three artists remain his favorites: George Perez (New Teen Titans, Wonder Woman), Alan Davis (Captain Britain, Excalibur), and Jaime Hernandez (Love and Rockets). Regarding technique, Tuttle uses traditional and digital methods with no particular preference for either. He says “digital inking is much cleaner-looking but time-consuming, [while] inking by hand is quicker [but lacks the “crispness” of digital.” The decision to use either depends on the project. TNT Comics continues to grow, as it will soon add another series, The Crime Ministry, to its existing stable of heroes, and villains. The main character “seeks to rule the world and make sweeping socioeconomic changes from his throne of blood and gold.”

When asked if comics have changed much over the years, Thom said, “Comics started 1939/1940 and have been in a state of constant change ever since.” Over time, themes in comics have become darker and more socially relevant.

Indeed, the comic book audience has changed, as reflected by its adult customer base. Thom confirms that his customers are “basically middle-aged men.” Thom’s participates in Free Comic Book Day, which is the first Saturday of May. Fox Valley Arts Hall of Fame The Fox Valley Arts Hall of Fame (FVAHF) was a dream of Lucille Halfvarson and other arts leaders that took tangible form during the millennium (2000) celebrations in Aurora, Illinois. A series of two-minute history sketches for public television briefly put the spotlight on violinist Maud Powell, an Aurora girl who, a century earlier, had the musical world at her feet. The committee that worked on this original project evolved into the Fox Valley Arts Hall of Fame, a not-for-profit organization that gives public recognition to artists associated with the Fox Valley by birth, education, residence, or service who have achieved national or international acclaim. The artists honored with induction every other year represent the visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, media arts and educator/curator/benefactors. Each must have served at least twenty years in his or her profession. A second objective of the FVAHF is to ensure a strong cultural legacy for future generations. Inductees are honored with engraved plaques that are displayed at the Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin. The FVAHF Class of 2018 includes Sterling (Stu) Ainsworth, Benefactor; Bobbie Brown, Visual Arts–Painting; Frank Catalano, Performing Arts–Music; William LaBaron, Visual Arts–Film Producer; William Moulis, Visual Arts–Murals and LaVerne Newsome, Performing Arts–Educator. Elgin Cultural Arts Commission

“And now, a word from our friends at For all artists and performers, the Cultural Arts Commission of Elgin (CAC) is a great opportunity for an individual to execute a project or put on a show. An artist can receive up to $1000 by applying for an individual grant. I have been putting on shows and events for over five years and have used the individual grant to help cover some of the expenses. Over the past five years, I have put on two robot themed art shows, two pin-up art shows and a themed art show called Fez Fest. This year I will be putting on a group art show called, “Strange Imaginations and Other Perplexing Wonders: A Celebration of the Pop Surrealism Movement.” The process is easy and you can download the application form from the City of Elgin website under the Boards and Commissions toolbar. Follow the key points on the form. The most important aspect I have found is defining your project or event. What is unique about it and how you plan to execute your idea? Remember the reason for gaining a grant from the city, is to have an impact on promoting the arts in the community. I also suggest, giving your self enough time for your project or event. You will find putting together all the details will take more time then you realize. You will also need to show how your dollars will be used for your project. I use the

funds to cover marketing materials, printing, food, drink, and event insurance. Each show I put on goes back into the community by also sponsoring a non-profit group. I usually do a $5 suggested donation at the door. All the remaining funds for the show after expenses go to a local non-profit. I also like to do an After Party at a local bar following the reception of my show. This is a great opportunity to help drive more traffic to a local business. I encourage anyone who has a vision for an event or project to look into applying for an individual grant from the CAC. You can start the process by reaching out to Amanda Harris at: harris_a@cityofelgin.org Dave Metzger is a local Elgin artist, graphic designer, and illustrator. He is also the Director of Oddball Art Labs, a local non-profit arts organization.

Imagine black and white checkered tiles underneath worn bottoms of black high-top sneakers. The muffled sound of a radio spewing out rock n’ roll and “The King of Soul.” White t-shirts and leather jackets dotting cherry-red leather booths. Newspaper headlines read, “This quartet could sell a million,” as a strawberry milkshake sits between a Greaser and his gal. The Million Dollar Quartet was born during a time of blue suede shoes and rock n’ roll.

“It takes place on December 4th, 1956 and it’s based on a true event that actually happened,” Gray begins. “Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis all got together at Sun Records. At that time, they were all represented by Sun and

Sam Phillips, coincidently at the same point in their earliest careers.” Some backstory aids Gray in the explanation of this one-of-akind moment in time. “So, Carl Perkins was recording a song called ‘Matchbox’ and Jerry Lee was there as a session pianist. He hadn’t had a hit single come out yet — ‘Great Balls of Fire’ wouldn’t come out for another year — but then, Elvis stopped on by, with his girlfriend at the time, and then Johnny Cash stopped on by, and Sam (Phillips) and his audio engineer just left the tape rolling and they just jammed.” Talk about being in the right place at the right time. “No one knew that was gonna happen,” Gray said. A celebration of that remarkable night is making its way to the Elgin Community College Arts Center on April 13 and 14 on a national tour of the smashhit Broadway musical, Million Dollar Quartet. The show has never before played at ECC, but iconic hits of the time, including

but not limited to “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Great Balls of Fire” and “Matchbox”, are just a sneak peek of what’s to come. Jerry Lee Lewis’s shoes could be hard to fill for some, in terms of his legendary piano stylings, but Gray took on the challenge. “Well, I’m not gonna toot my own horn, but I did my research,” Gray laughed when asked about being well-versed in piano since he was playing such an iconic pianist in the show. Famously nicknamed “The Killer,” Lewis was known for having a wild-boy attitude. Gray shared his take on his own nickname, with a laugh. “I’ve had a plethora of nicknames over the years but none are even close to ‘The Killer,’ they all just play off of my real name. I’ve gotten TayTay, or Tay Gray, T-Gray … so simple.” Momentarily thinking further about such a name, Gray continued, “With the piano stuff, I would say ... this is going to sound either so cliché or sound wrong ... ‘The Mad Man.’ Either that, or ‘The Crazy One.’” “When you’re doing the role [of Jerry Lee Lewis] you have to be a little on the crazy side anyway,” Gray said. “When I was younger and was always playing, I would just play very loud and very fast. I didn’t know the phrase or the word ‘dynamics’ until I was in middle school, when I had to play a slow, soft Beethoven piece, like, ‘oh, this is what it means to play quietly, I didn’t know this was a thing!’ But for this show, I just get to let loose and let it all out.”

Play the Piano, Man Growing up in Rochester, New York, music was at the forefront of Gray’s childhood, a theme that would continue on for years to come. “My mom was one of those mothers who always thought that their kid should know how to play a musical instrument,” Gray said. “I’m the oldest of three, so I was the first one to take piano lessons. I started taking them in the first grade and I don’t remember exactly how I really decided ‘this is what I want to do’, but I remember the first full song I ever learned; a very easy version of [Billy Joel’s] ‘Piano Man.’”

Thus, Gray’s musical abilities continued to blossom at the University at Buffalo, where he became a jack-of-all-trades in early adulthood.

Apart from the magnitude of projects Gray involved himself in, none seem to size up to Million Dollar Quartet.

A production of that nature, in front of an audience hopeful to relive the magic of that 1956 night, left Gray wonderstruck. “Oh man, the first time I played was such ... it was a thing in itself,” Gray said. Although Gray’s heart (and fingers) belong to the black and white keys, his versatility is notable. “I play a little acoustic guitar, nothing too crazy, I just know chord structures and things like that. In middle school and high school, I played trombone, but I only know how to play harmonica for one song.” The song? None other than “Billy Joel’s ‘Piano Man’ ... and I have the harmonica holder and everything!” It is no secret which artist reigns supreme as the most influential towards his musical artistry. “I’m a Billy Joel guy! If you give me any album, I could play at least one song from that album, memorized.”

Doo Wap You Do Best The stage lights are not unfamiliar to Gray, having starred in shows such as Grease, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Les Misérables, to name a few among many. The actor revealed his top pick (among those three listed), a show that ultimately would change the course of his acting career. “I would probably say Les Mis,” Gray said. “Because I was Jean Valjean, as a graduating senior, and I had this giant beard that I was growing out for four months, I really got to hone my skills as an actor in that, rather than just singing the lines. I was actually diving into a character world; it was one of those ‘Oh my god, I can actually do this,’ moments. It was real self-assuring to know that I would be able to make it in this business.” Gray has done much more than just ‘make it in this business’, he even started his own. He owns a production company, TIG music, which he started in college. “I’ve always loved music theory and I took classes in high school. I learned that I had, let’s say, a knack for arranging music, and I was also really big into the a cappella scene,” Gray said.

4.4

“Throughout college I was just arranging a cappella songs like crazy; granted, some of them weren’t that great, I’ve learned,” Gray laughed. “I’ve gotten a lot better since then, but that was when I kind of found my niche, in a way. The world would soon welcome the birth of Gray’s new musical venture. “I was hanging out with a bunch of friends, and they were talking about how we should make it into a business, and we’re coming up with different names, and one of them just shouts out ‘What about TIG music? Or T.I.G.?’ or things like that, and I’m just like...wait a minute...that could be it! T.I.G. Music...that could work!” His company work includes a broad spectrum of musical stylings. “Over the last couple years, I’ve expanded from not only karaoke tracks and a cappella arrangements, but I also do recordings; I record myself doing these arrangements that are on YouTube right now. I do mixing, engineering, video work, sheet music, transpositions, transcriptions. Not only myself, but I’ve recorded my friends, and I’ve co-produced with other buddies of mine, which worked out pretty well,” Gray said. When asked about which of the many trades he practices is most favorable, Gray said “At first, it was definitely the arranging ... comparing way back then to what I am able to do now, is just still mind-boggling to me, because doing this for years on the side while also trying to be a working actor is something I never thought would happen.” Tickets for ECC Arts Center’s national touring production of Million Dollar Quartet on Friday, April 13 or Saturday, April 14 are $79 / $59 / $49. Opera is an expensive art form. Yes, there’s the cost of the talent — lead singers, a chorus, orchestra and conductor — but the production costs often exceed that: costumes, sets, the hall, the crew ... It becomes a complex business undertaking that’s accountable, as any business is, to customer satisfaction. Philip Morehead, a veteran of over thirty years as pianist, conductor and head of the musical staff at the renowned Lyric Opera of Chicago, shared his thoughts on the current state of the art, and his upcoming appearance in Elgin with Soirée Lyrique’s production of Puccini’s Tosca.

Mounting Tensions “Cost and marketability are critical factors,” he explained about an opera company’s choice of programming. “You have to balance out the repertory to appeal to your audience.” Despite the vast amount of material available, companies often rely on popular, well-known works like La Traviata, Carmen or Madama Butterfly to sell tickets. The reuse of sets and

viability and artistic quality in various ways. One way is to use nonstandard venues like museums or warehouses to offer a fresh take on the material and save cost at the same time.

“My wife is a composer, and we’ve both lamented the lack of daring in opera production, or the tendency to do radical (and sometimes senseless) new stagings of standard works instead of doing a new work.”

For Elgin’s Soirée Lyrique and Tosca, the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church is that alternative venue. Soirée’s highly successful recent production of Die Fledermaus struck the right balance of accessibility, cost and acoustic quality.

In cities with sufficient demand for opera, smaller companies have sought to relieve the tension between financial

Simplifying the instrumental requirements reduces scale, cost and rehearsal time, and for Tosca, a 16-piece orchestra provided by Chamber Music on the Fox will perform an arrangement of the original score. “The orchestra reduction we will be using for Tosca was done by Philip Walsh, a conductor I worked with at the Festival Lyrique-en-Mer on Belle-Île in France,” explained Morehead. “I conducted two of his reductions there, The Barber of Seville and The Elixir of Love. He is very adept at it so I’m sure the result will be very pleasing.” And it helps to work with freelancers who are also friends. Those familiar with the concerts of Soirée Lyrique will recognize several of the names in the cast of Tosca, and Artistic Director and Producer Solange Sior knows Maestro Morehead as well. “Phil Morehead was my first coach at the Lyric when I was

Singing Home the Bacon Working lots and lots of gigs, like Sior’s Tosca, is de rigeur for many professional musicians. “Most musicians have to scramble with multiple gigs and teaching to make ends meet,” Morehead confirmed, “but opera is one musical area where you can earn a living if you’re lucky to get a job with a major company, but there are not very many of those. Lyric Opera of Chicago is one of the best.” Anyone who has worked in the Chicago music business for thirty years gains a rare perspective. “Chicago has an active musical scene — not as rich as New York, however the quality level in Chicago is comparable and in some ways (Lyric Opera

if the product is excellent, the audience will show up. With the excellent cast assembled by Soirée Lyrique, and the musicians led by Philip Morehead, only the opera itself could possibly disappoint. Elgin Alive - Asset Based Community Development 101 Asset Based Community Development 101: Connecting Building Blocks to Create Thriving Communities. What builds thriving communities? In the video, “ABCD 101,” John McKnight of the Asset Building Community Development (ABCD) Institute reviews the five basic building blocks of asset-based community development. Rather than using a problem-based needs-assessment starting point, leading to an outside intervention model, ABCD identifies an asset-based starting point to identify what positive grassroots initiatives are already operational, from which community growth can develop. The ABCD Institute is at the center of a movement that considers local assets as the primary building blocks of sustainable community development. Building on the skills of local residents, the power of local associations, and the supportive functions of local institutions, asset-based community development draws upon existing community strengths to build stronger, more sustainable communities for the future. Discussion will follow the video. Sponsored by Elgin Community Network & the City of Elgin. 6.30p-8.30p, GBPL Meadows Comm. Rms. A-B, 270 N. Elemental Explorations with Nick Wild Music teachers are frequently asked to reinforce skills and concepts from other academic areas. Our challenge is to provide meaningful integration without sacrificing essential components of our curriculum. This workshop will provide examples of interdisciplinary lessons and storytelling that maintain musical integrity through the creative process. We will explore concepts from multiple subject areas, but always with a primary focus on process teaching, elemental music theory, and student-centered musical experiences. We will also experience the full potential of the Orff approach as we play some of my students’ favorite “fun but challenging” games and use various media to develop the games’ musical elements in creative contexts. 10a-1p, Country Trails Grade School, 3701 Highland Woods Blvd. foxvalleyorff@gmail.com foxvalleyorff.org

Over the period of 1943-1954, they were among the more than 550 women who played professional baseball in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGBPL) depicted in the movie “A League of Their Own.” One of the players in the women’s baseball league, Bethany Goldsmith, was from Elgin. “Do you accept the Elgin Doller?” To mark our third anniversary, BRAVO Magazine will introduce the Elgin Doller in our July 2018 edition. We’ll print one Elgin Doller in every issue. This currency-like looking double-sided note is a beautifully designed tribute to the past, present and future of Elgin. Using a sharp scissors or hobby knife, you simply cut the Doller out of its page in BRAVO, and put it in your wallet, pocket or purse.

Illustrations by Madeline Richmond

IDEA BOX

On the roof over the left side of the building is a metal railing. Add details. The dome is made of painted metal. What color is it painted with today? How many stars can be seen in the sky tonight? In order to ensure accurate timekeeping for their watches, the Elgin National Watch Company built this observatory in 1909, just a few blocks from the factory. It housed a telescope used to track the movements of stars, which could be used to measure intervals of time with great accuracy. As production slowed, then ceased after World War II, the observatory was given to the Elgin School District in 1960. Internet sources: historicelgin.com Š M.E. Richmond Art. All rights reserved. BRAVO Serial Fiction: “Victory Lane” Jax hushed the hysterical Maltese and peeked out his front window to see who was at the door. It was an older Latino man holding something wrapped in aluminum foil. “Can I help you?” “I’m Paco, your neighbor. I live in the house on the other side of the hedge. I came over to say ‘Welcome to Front Street.’” “Oh hey, nice to meet you! One second —” Jax turned around and shouted into the house, “Toni, come out front and meet our neighbor!” Paco backpedaled as Jax stepped out onto the front porch to escape the incessant barking. “I’d invite you inside, but it’s a mess in there. We’ve been unpacking for the last two weeks and there’s still boxes all over the place.” “No, no, that’s all right. I already know the inside of your house like I know my own. The Rosens, who used to live here, were good friends of ours. We knew them for ... about thirty years. Here, Teresa sent over some homemade tamales.”

I’m going out to mow, but save me one for later.”

Part One:

The Hedge by Mark Averill Street, Wilson Street and Admiralty Lane — that comprised this subdivision platted just after the end of World War I. Victory Lane was never extended. Instead, it ended at Front Street, forming a tee intersection where the homes of Jax and Paco were now separated by the hedge instead of pavement. “I was wondering —” Jax questioned, “Have you lived with this hedge for all these years? Doesn’t anyone take care of it?”

“Wow, thanks. It’ll be nice to taste some home-cooked food for a change. We’ve been surviving on carry out and microwave dinners.” Jax took the warm tamales and scratched his head. “Yeah, I wanted to introduce you to my wife Antoinette ... I don’t know what she’s up to ... maybe she’s dealing with the kids ... we have two kids, five and seven.”

“Well, if you ever need anything, you can always find me right over there on the other side of the hedge.” The hedge was a 20-foot wide, 120-foot deep patch of overgrown land, deeded to the City as the future extension of Victory Lane, one of the narrow residential streets — along with Pershing

Grapevines nearly eight inches thick at the base had been growing through its middle ever since Italian immigrants had planted them there in the 1920’s. Sage, mint and basil still appeared occasionally, as generations of hedgeside neighbors had cultivated it over the years. Local legend held that marijuana plants could be found if one looked carefully. Cottontail rabbits went in and out of the hedge all day, every day, and robins favored the dense thickets for nesting places. Cardinals and waxwings came for the grapes every August. “It was always like that,” Paco replied. “We just let it be.” “But there’s a lot of useable space there. Didn’t you and the Rosens ever consider using the area as a garden or something?”

“Ah ... it seems like you got your hands full, then,” smiled Paco. So, what’s your name?” “Oh, I’m Jaxon. We’re Jax and Toni.” He shook Paco’s hand.

gathered around the milkweed and bumblebees patroled the tops of coneflowers and blackeyed Susans. Every year, the colors were a little different.

Paco and Teresa had lived there longer than any of their neighbors, and no one had ever seen the hedge look any different. It was dense with Indian grass and bluestem and prairie dropseed. In the Spring, dandelions and clover grew along the border, followed by wild daisies, bergamot and Queen Anne’s lace. In the Summer, monarchs

“I suppose you could say it always was some kind of a garden,” Paco surmised. “And we got a little privacy from it, too.” “Kinda like, good fences make good neighbors?” “Yeah,” Paco chuckled and look over at the hedge. “I think that’s how the saying goes.” The conversation ended, and Paco left the porch to return to his side of the hedge. Jax went in the house and announced loudly, “Toni, the neighbor brought over some hot tamales.

The lawn was patchy in April, but in a few places the grass was already long. Jax paced around the yard, picking up small sticks and pieces of litter. It was the first time he had looked closely at the ground around his new home. The hedge was greening up, too, and a few canes of forsythia were already in bloom along Jax’s lot line where Mrs. Rosen had once tried propagating it. He walked to the back corner of his yard to look for the metal stake that marked the boundary between his property and the unfinished Victory Lane. It took six pulls to start the lawnmower for the first time that season. Jax pushed it along the edge of his driveway toward Front Street, then turned and followed the sidewalk, and stopped when he reached the hedge. He killed the engine and raised the lawnmower blade as high as it would go. Aiming six inches to one side of the stake at the back of his lot he slowly walked the forty yard length, cutting down a narrow swath of the hedge. He lowered the blade and doubled back, rolling over the fresh clippings in order to cut them into smaller pieces and expel them back into the hedge. The rest of the job was unremarkable. Dusk fell as Jax parked the mower and went inside to find one tamale on a paper plate on the kitchen table. It was cold.

BRAVO serial fiction presents an original short story by a local writer in a series of short sections of approximately 1000 words each. A new chapter of “Victory Lane” will appear each month from April to August 2018. Mark Averill is a computer analyst and amateur writer whose articles be read on the performing arts blog, The Elgin Review (theelginreview.blogspot.com).

From This River Town

Go Ahead: Dog-ear by Mary Ellen Goodwill

And highlight. If you own the book. Best not to dog-ear and highlight a book from the library. That would be rude behavior. Who hasn’t become distracted and disgruntled by notes from a previous reader? Tsk, tsk. Let’s say you have finished reading a book, any book, and you are uncertain what to pick up next. Why not pull down a few favorites from your book shelf. Random choices. Don’t over think them. Sit down and flip through. Flippity flip flip. Now, if you have dogeared and highlighted those books, you have a treasure trove of description, advice, information, poetic lines, etc. at your fingertips. These are the gems you found valuable possibly twenty years ago, possibly last year. They will surprise you and thrill you anew. You might find yourself adding a red mark beside the highlight or on top of the dog-ear—what a delight. For the sake of example, I randomly pulled two books from one of my bookcases. They were side by side in the biography/memoir section: Kate Chopin, A Life of the Author of The Awakening, by Emily Toth and Dogs Bark, but the Caravan Rolls On by Frank Conroy.

From the Chopin book: “Kate Chopin did believe in extrasensory perception and spiritual communication between kindred souls ... “ That totally rocks my boat as the sixth sense fascinates me. This might lead me to the library in search of more books about angels and ghosts. I say “more” because I have devoured plenty. From Conroy: “... a certain tense alertness to language being perhaps the most basic [element] of good narrative fiction ... “ A writer I know recently checked into a local hotel in order to reread three hundred pages of her recent novel in preparation for continuing that work. The privacy (and room service) allowed her to sit by the fireplace in a plush robe, watch the snow fall over the Fox River and recapture the tone, the mood, the language of her story. This is fertile time, an “alertness to language” which is essential for her progress. Over thirty years ago, when I turned forty, I began reading memoirs and autobiographies by literary women who were much older. Mid-fifties and even older than that! I read Sarton and Grumbach and Heilbrun and

Truitt and I doggone dog-eared and highlighted every single one. Reading the highlights now when I am the same age or older than the writers were then, I nod with a different perspective. Now I am their peer or their elder and here are some highlighted excerpts that I recently red marked.

I discovered Downtown Elgin at the age of 8. Despite living in Northeast Elgin since birth, I had few experiences outside my newly constructed neighborhood. That all changed when my father and I began to venture out on bike rides along the Fox River Trail. This was one of my favorite places to ride because it took us through downtown Elgin. As a young child who loved making buildings out of Legos, I fell in love. I begged my father time and time again to go back. There was so much work happening downtown, and I wanted to watch it happen, to be a part of it. I began asking my father to bring home large sheets of paper from work. I would lay them out on the dining room table and draw out plans for a “Future Elgin”, I would draw buildings being restored, along with ideas for new ones. But I knew there was more I could do and learn. As I grew older I continued to return by bike, documenting architectural details with my cam-

era and hanging those pictures throughout my room. I soon began venturing into the nearby residential historic districts and was in awe of the diverse population of residential architecture from the late 19th through the 20th century. Everything from Victorian era to Mid-Century Modern homes. Because Elgin’s Architectural Preservation Downtown and in its many residential historic districts sparked my initial interest in architecture, I took architectural design courses during my time at Elgin High School. There, my teachers encouraged me to use Elgin as a case study for preservation and design where I was able to use my research and photos as precedents for these projects. It was during my time in high school that I was encouraged by a friend’s parent to attend the Historic Elgin House Tour. This event helped me to recognize that not only did I have a love of architecture but of Elgin, giving me a new perspective on my city and home. I was able to meet new people and learn that I was not the only person obsessing over Elgin’s historic homes. I learned how fortunate I am to have these events occur in Elgin, and the Tour has left on me a lasting impression. I looked at Elgin and saw something unique and different, something not too many cities have to offer, and it was something that I wanted to be part of.

Upon graduating high school I enrolled in the University of Illinois at Chicago’s School of Architecture to pursue and explore more of the field to which Elgin exposed me. During my studies I began volunteering as a docent for the Historic Elgin House Tour, not able to fully remove myself from Elgin. Since my recent graduation I have been volunteering and getting involved as much as I can. I am currently a co-chair for the Historic Elgin House Tour, and on the Downtown Neighborhood Association Design Committee. Through these great opportunities, I have had the pleasure of meeting so many people, both citizens and city employees, that are deeply invested in preserving and promoting Elgin’s architectural heritage. To say that the citizens of Elgin appreciate their architecture is an understatement. Elgin’s Architectural Appreciation goes all the way back to early grassroots efforts of the Gifford Park Association in the early 1980’s to improve their east side neighborhood. This group worked to enhance appreciation of the architectural and design heritage of their neighborhood, and later the City of Elgin. Today The Gifford Park Association conducts architectural salvages, rehabilitates problem properties, and is most well-known for the Historic Elgin House Tour. This year’s tour is scheduled for September 8th and 9th. This is an Elgin Image Award winning event I can guarantee you won’t want to miss. Open Elgin is another event

that promotes appreciation for Elgin’s Architecture, run by the Elgin Area Chamber and the Elgin Development Group. This event is in its second year and showcases the commercial architecture of Elgin. Open Elgin is a free self-guided tour of unique buildings and locations throughout the Elgin community, where several buildings not usually open to the general public are put on tour. This year’s event will occur on April 21st from 1:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. and is free and open to all.
