Open Saturdays • Hablamos Español On the Cover: The Love Letter 20 x 20” acrylic paint on canvas Artist’s private collection, not for sale. “This piece was created as a wedding gift for my wife in November of 2013. After 6 years together, I finally plucked up the courage to asked her to be my wife. We had a beautiful ‘day of the dead’ themed wedding filled with red roses and sugar skulls. When her birthday came around that next February I created this piece just for her. Its still her favorite work and sits on the wall as the focal point of the room till this day.” Joe Falcinelli (aka Baker Joe Art) is a Chicago area Certified Baker and Visual Artist. Joe has been working in the baking industry for 10 years and has learned the craft from some of the best bakers in the country. However, for the last 4 years, Joe has made a strong effort to reconnect with his passion for art. After a full work day that starts at 10pm, he hits the studio to sketch, cut stencils, and paint whatever “canvas” he can get his hands on. Using recycled materials found or donated, Joe has created colorful and sometimes practical pieces of art with what some might think is junk. His Vinyl wall clocks are made from donated and found records that are then painted and fitted with a clock movement. He has also worked with recycled windows, reclaimed wood, ceramic tile, and all kinds of other materials. His use of negative spaces and bold colors help define his unique style as a mixture of pop, abstract, and street style art. He achieves this by using multiple layers and colors of paint to create abstract backgrounds as a base for his piece. Next, he sketches, and hand cuts shapes out of the image creating one-time use stencils that are then applied over the top of the piece. Baker Joe’s work is currently being displayed all over the country from Doughnut shops in New Jersey to man caves in L.A. You can also find his work locally at The Evanston Pop Up Gallery and at the Elgin Art and Soul Festival. Mention the words “book club” and what images come to mind? Perhaps a group of grey-haired spinsters sipping tea and eating pastries while discussing Jane Eyre novels? What about a flock of dispirited middle-aged women, drinking wine and sharing bitter stories of ex-lovers, as they fawn over the latest bodice-ripper romance? Although in rare cases these scenarios may hold some truth, book clubs in general are nothing like their cliches suggest. In fact, the history of the book club is steeped in revolutionary ideas, intellectual stimulation, social and political discourse.

Affectionately Yore’s Even romance literature has a noble past, worthy of any book club discussion. Stretching all the way back to a medieval mention of St. Valentine’s Day, Ellen Castelow, a contributor to Wikipedia, recalls Chaucer’s 1382 poem “Parliament of Fowls,” which was written in honor of the engagement of King Richard II to Anne of Bohemia. To wit:

For this was on Seynt Valentyne’s day, whan every foul cometh ther to chese his make ... By Shakespeare’s time, the literary romance of St. Valentine’s Day endured the test of time. In Shakespeare’s great tragedy Hamlet, Ophelia mourns:

Tomorrow is Saint Valentine’s day. All in the morning betime, And I a maid at your window, To be your Valentine. Since romantic sentiment is present in the greatest of English writers, who are we to pass judgment on a present day book

club that enjoys romance literature?

The First Few Chapters In America, book discussions framed ideas to further social, political, and scientific causes of the time. Audra Otto, of the MinnPost online, created a timeline that highlights the emergence of American book clubs. Benjamin Franklin organized a literary society, the Junto, in Philadelphia (1727), consisting of a dozen members, but it was women who benefitted the most by forming their own discussion clubs. Banned from male gatherings related to topics of the day, women such as Anne Hutchinson began to form their own literary meetings. Beginning on a ship bound for the Massachusetts Bay Colony, circa 1634, Hutchinson’s women’s group dissected the weekly Christian sermons. Disbanded on the Colony by the male powers that were, Hutchinson nonetheless began the American practice of women’s involvement in the study of serious literature through group participation.

February 2018

In the mid 18th century, women such as Hannah Adams and Hannah M. Crocker formed reading circles to educate women in poetry and prose (Adams), and science (Crocker). Much like today’s book clubs, each group specialized in a particular genre. Book clubs of yesteryear created powerful platforms for those whose voices were silenced by the patriarchal system. Otto’s timeline notes the year 1827 as a particularly progressive one. With the formation of the Society of Young Ladies, there arose a network of African American women’s literary groups in major eastern cities. In 1840, Margaret Fuller owned a bookstore in Boston and offered seminars for women there. As the years rolled along, women’s book clubs began to grow exponentially. By 1900, known as the Progressive Era, groups as varied as social reform, church gatherings, and nation-wide associations, such as the National Council of Jewish Women and the American Association of University Women (AAUW), came to be. Several of these organizations still exist today. However, 19th century book clubs were not focused on entertainment as much as they were on intellectual enlightenment. Pamela Burger, author of a JSTOR article “Women’s Groups and the Rise of the Book Club,” recalls the year 1868 as a pivotal point for women’s literary progress. Women newspaper columnists were forbidden to attend a New York Press Club meeting that featured the famous, beloved writer Charles Dickens. In response to the rejection, journalist Jane C. Croly was inspired to start her own literary society, Sorosis. Croly’s creation of a literary society for intelligent, educated and curious women became the template for the formation of women’s groups across the country. Elgin has its own Woman’s Club. Formed in 1887, its objec-

BRAVO

tive was to offer “mutual sympathy and counsel, and united effort in all benevolent and educational movements in the community ...” notes The Public School Journal in 1920. Best known for its efforts in successfully establishing Sherman Hospital, the Elgin Woman’s Club had a literary division second to none. Ms. Jane Cunningham Croly herself gave mention to it in her book, The History of the Woman’s Club Movement: “[Elgin Woman’s Club has] standing committees upon art and literature, home and philanthropy, education and reform ... Discussions have been presented upon ‘Modern Educators,’ ‘The Humor of George Eliot’ [and] followed by discussions that are notably brilliant.” That’s high praise, coming from a literary pioneer like Jane C. Croly. As time went by, book club topics became more focused on social reforms and female empowerment. Building on the “self-culture” themes of the late 1800s, book clubs would advance history once again through the “conscious raising” groups of the 1960s and ‘70s. Women’s liberation, the so-called second wave, grew in the home gatherings of enlightened people. Voices of discontent arose within the happy housewife suburban culture and exposed the gender bias in the workplace and society in general. Because females are the backbone of the evolution of the book club, it is no surprise that women make up the vast majority of book club membership today.

Mozart Requiem and Vivaldi Gloria

If none of these grabs you, then you can start your own! Elgin is fortunate to have such a treasure as the GBPL. A sampling of book clubs that meet at GBPL include the Great Books Discussion Group, Contemporary Fiction Book Group, and a new group for 2018 called Social Issues Book Club. Other groups that meet outside the library are the Walking Book Club and the CKI Book Club. The Great Books Discussion Group is sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and meets on the 2nd Monday of the month at 6:55 pm. If you enjoy classical literature, this is the group for you. The group leader, Jeanne Hebeisen, has been a leader and co-founder of the group since the 1980s.

The group cultivates its reading list for the year through the Great Books Foundation, and its selections vary from short stories to poetry and philosophy. For example, March’s topic is an essay by John Stuart Mill; April features poetry selections, and May delves into Macbeth, which includes a group outing to Navy Pier’s Shakespeare Theatre and a dinner. Each month, a different group member leads the discussion questions and background on the literature presentation. As member Barb Richardson attests, “I feel very lucky to be part of [this group]. It’s as though I’m being taught as well as enjoying my love for classical literature.” The group will remind you of your favorite literature class with its lively discussions and socratic debates. Hebeisen continues to chair the meetings “for the intellectual stimulation.” Great Books is open to all, and no registration is required. No need to fear intimidation; the members are friendly and welcoming. On a lighter note, check out the Contemporary Fiction Book Group, which meets once a month on Wednesday from 7-8:30 pm. New members are always welcome. Books published within the past 20 years provide the material for reading, and group facilitator Tish Calhamer chooses the titles. Calhamer notes,” It’s a highly scientific process; I choose books I’ve already read!” Members range in age from

4.2

late 20s up to the 80s, so Calhamer does her best to pick books with “interesting characters, [a] riveting plot, beautiful writing, or an important theme.” Although she prepares questions, in most cases the group falls into discussions on their own. A few favorite titles are All the Light We Cannot See (Anthony Doerr), The Invention of Wings (Sue Monk Kidd), and The Night Circus (Erin Morgenstern). The GBPL devotes a section of shelves for book club readers and typically stocks 12-15 copies of each title. With an average attendance of 13-15 members, chances are high that the book you need is available at the library.

Off the Shelf For something completely different, GBPL offers a Walking Book Club (WBC). Started in June, 2010, by Danielle Henson and Nancy Haggard of the GBPL staff, Haggard admits, “We had no model for this concept.” Their creative minds put together a unique and successful group, and eight years later it’s still going strong. About 12 members are regulars, and half of those are charter members. The idea is to combine exercise with a book discussion “cool down.” Forty-five minutes are allotted for walking and the remaining 45 minutes is dedicated to the book topics. Charter member Jennifer Reopelle noted, “We walk for 45 minutes and talk about our lives, and then we talk about the book (their lives) for 45 minutes.” Whenever possible, members walk outside, usually along the riverfront, but in inclement weather, the group meets indoors at The Centre of Elgin. There is no cost to use the walking track inside the Centre. The WBC is a fun, casual group. Beth Naughton, also a charter member, remarked, “We’re the no guilt, no shame book club.” However, there is one rule: No reading ahead of the schedule! Members receive a bookmark, with the reading schedule divided into 4 sections, for each new book. The WBC likes to combine social outings that fit within the theme of the book. For instance, after reading Eat, Pray, Love, the

BRAVO

group enjoyed a meal at an Italian restaurant. If you’re looking to make new friends while enjoying good books, come meet the friendly folks of the WBC at the Centre every Wednesday from 7-8:30. Then there are book clubs such as the CKI (Congregation Kneseth Israel) Book Club with a specific approach of books to build community and friendships. The books range from fiction to non-fiction but share an emphasis on Jewish life, history, and culture. A few intriguing titles on the reading list are Violins of the Holocaust, Notorious RBG:The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and John Lennon and the Jews. Each year, books are picked from suggestions by group members. There is no designated leader for the discussions, but the interactions evolve naturally. Although the club is open to new

5

members, prospective members are encouraged to contact the synagogue’s secretary, Pam Lehman, for contact information and a reading list. The Rabbi Margaret Frisch Klein hosts a monthly “Java and Jews” session at three area coffee shops during the day, and interested parties are encouraged to attend one. For more information, please call Ms. Lehman at 847-741-5656. Reading is a solitary pursuit, yet the enjoyment of meeting other readers is a wonderful way to connect with others who share your love of books. Other readers may have different viewpoints and unique perspectives that allow a deeper understanding of the text. Plus, it’s just plain fun to debate and discuss characters and plot, and to share particularly moving passages with other passionate readers. —DT

A Piece of my Heart The Elgin Theatre Company continues its 2017-2018 season with A Piece of my Heart, written by Shirley Lauro, based on the book by Keith Walker. Most histories of the Vietnam War say little about the women who served as nurses, Red Cross workers, and entertainers. Shirley Lauro’s earnest play brings the women’s stories front and center. The play concentrates on six archetypal characters: a self-described military brat who wants to be an Army nurse like her mother; a wide-eyed singer who gets booked as an entertainer at military camps; a small-town girl who sees military service as a way to break out; a wealthy young woman who horrifies her parents by applying for Red Cross work in the war zone; a half-Chinese, half-Italian nurse from New York City who thinks she’s going to serve in a rehabilitation hospital in Hawaii; and an African-American career officer who takes an overseas posting to improve her professional standing. Directed by Madeline Franklin and produced by Richard Grieger, A Piece of my Heart is a powerful work that explores the heart, music and soul of a tumultuous era in our history. This production contains adult language and situations, and is intended for mature audiences. The play runs for three weekends, February 2-18 at the Elgin Art Showcase, 164 Division Street. Friday and Saturday shows are 8:00 pm and Sunday matinees are 2:00 pm.

Tickets are $18 ($15 for students and seniors). For reservations, information or ticket sales, go to elgin-theatre.org, call (847) 741-0532, or write to tickets@ inil.com.

Get Tartuffed During its 40th season, the Independent Players revive a great period classic play in Moliere’s Tartuffe, directed by Don Haefliger, running for three weekends February 23 through March 10th at the Elgin Art Showcase, 164 Division Street. The 1669 satire follows the travails of dithering Orgon, a middle-aged fool who falls under the spell of a charlatan—Tartuffe, a duplicitous would-be man of God who is more in thrall to sex and money. Orgon’s gullibility drives his family to despair, especially when he endeavors to marry off his daughter Mariane to his new friend. Tartuffe’s boldness knows no bounds and Orgon gets royally “Tartuffed” before he finally comes to his senses. The play satirizes the religious hypocrite and is intended as a critique of the misuse of religion. Yet through plot development and its characters, Moliere makes an even broader social commentary touching upon the Enlightenment ideals of reason and the hierarchical structure of society. This is most apparent in the way Moliere upholds the Enlightenment belief that females are capable of reason, demonstrating their capability for rationality and clev-

erness, and presents a critique of an irrational patriarchy which attempts to oppose them. It is the female characters in Tartuffe who recognize the hypocrite and his malice, demonstrating their clear sense of right and wrong. Their insistence on revealing what is really going on and their attempts to subvert the irrational patriarchal authority allow them to succeed where the men of the family failed in bringing about the unmasking of Tartuffe’s fraud. This happens despite the power exercised by Orgon and the social world of the time where women exist in utter subordination to fathers and husbands. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets are $15, available at independentplayers.org or at the door. For more information, call 847-6977374.

Scarlet This innovative full length ballet — inspired by the novel The Scarlet Letter — is a hybrid work that will use both film, spoken word and dance to portray a deeply emotional story, choreographed by Ballet 5:8 Artistic Director Julianna Slager. Scarlet will give audiences a fresh look and response to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic novel. The ballet will follow the iconic Hester, a young woman caught in adultery, as she struggles to find peace and restoration in the midst of a hypocritical and harsh early-American Puritan society. The ballet imagines the deep internal struggle that led Hester to the choices she makes and brings into question the hypocrisy that dwells within religious society, asking the viewer to consider how we all, in our own way, and are in need of forgiveness and redemption. Following the performance, audience members are invited to take part in a TalkBack panel discussion with the performers and choreographer. Scarlet takes the stage at Hemmens Cultual Center for one night only, February 17 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $30 ($24 students and seniors, $15 children), available by phone at 312-725-4752 or online at ballet58.org.

Understanding this about them may be able to help you cope with the behavior. Bullying is basically a form of intimidation or domination toward someone who is perceived as being weaker. It is a way of getting what one wants through some sort of coercion or force. It is also a way for someone to establish some sort of perceived superiority over another person. Join us for a free dinner at 5:00 pm. followed by our speaker at 5:30 p.m. While the event is free, a reservation is required. A Piece of my Heart A Piece of my Heart is a collection of women’s experiences in the Vietnam War. It portrays a group of women, mainly nurses, and their stories that goes behind the scenes and shares their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. The strong undercurrent flowing throughout the individual the stories is the devotion that they have for the fighting soldiers. The soldiers are front and center in the war effort and in the nurses’ consciousness—their comfort, their needs, their struggles, and pain. The play also successfully portrays the overwhelming “fish out of water” feeling that the women felt in Vietnam, the atrocious working conditions, and the constant struggle to provide compassionate treatment.

Book Club Join a few members of Positive Impact Fox Valley as they discuss the book “Bonfire” by Krysten Ritter! Please contact us for location details. “It has been ten years since Abby Williams left home and scrubbed away all visible evidence of

her small-town roots. Now working as an environmental lawyer in Chicago, she has a thriving career, a modern apartment, and her pick of meaningless one-night stands. But when a new case takes her back home to Barrens, Indiana, the life Abby painstakingly created begins to crack. Tasked with investigating Optimal Plastics, the town’s most high-profile company and economic heart, Abby begins to find strange connections to Barrens’s biggest scandal from more than a decade ago, involving the popular Kaycee Mitchell and her closest friends—just before Kaycee disappeared for good. Abby knows the key to solving any case lies in the weak spots, the unanswered questions. But as she tries desperately to find out what really happened to Kaycee, troubling memories begin to resurface and she begins to doubt her own observations. And when she unearths an even more disturbing secret—a ritual called “The Game”—it will threaten reputations, and lives, in the community and risk exposing a darkness that may consume her. With tantalizing twists, slow-burning suspense, and a remote rural town of just five claustrophobic square miles, Bonfire is a dark exploration of what happens when your past and present collide.”* (Taken from Amazon.com) 6.30p, Location TBA in Elgin www. positiveimpactfv.org Genealogy Writers’ Group Learn from others with a similar interest in writing their families’ history. 6.30p8p, GBPL Conference Room, 270 N. Who’s looking out the window of their new apartment? What historic detail was just replaced on the front of the building?

Š M.E. Richmond Art. All rights reserved. Used with permission.

The Elgin Tower Building opened in 1929, to replace the original Home Bank building located on Fountain Square. Its upper floors were used for offices. In late October that year, the stock market crashed and devastated the bank. The tower was again prosperous following World War II, when demand for Elgin goods increased, but this prosperity was only temporary, and the tower again fell on hard times in the 1960s when the Elgin National Watch Factory closed. For decades, William Stickling and his charitable foundation sought to preserve and restore the building, but it languished until 2016, when Capstone Development acquired it. It is now an upscale residential tower with many original details intact.

Ave. 847.742.2411 gailborden.info Elgin Genealogical Society Monthly meeting of the Elgin Genealogical Society with William Kolasinski presenting “Abraham Lincoln: A Life in the Shadow of Death”. Abraham Lincoln was a man who faced death from an early age. As a three year old, he watched his infant brother die, then his aunt, uncle, and mother, before he reached the age of ten. He struggled with the sudden death of a young love, then two sons by age 50. He nearly lost his own life several times before the age of 21. During his Presidency, this man who wished to govern “with malice toward none,” saw over 600,000 of his countrymen die. He presided over a country awash in blood. How did he suffer through this life filled with death and still become the steadfast leader who saw the nation through its most agonizing years? 7p-8.45p, GBPL Grove Room, 270 N. Elgin Art Showcase

a versatile performance space and art gallery in downtown elgin, illinois

by Mary Ellen Goodwill

The young woman in front of me in line at the Jewel, toddler in tow, had two items at the bottom of her cart under her jacket. She did not put them on the conveyor belt to be scanned. She paid her balance with a credit card and pushed the cart with her child, her groceries, her jacket and the other two items out the door. It was a Wednesday afternoon. I was not particularly busy. No hurry. Sort of in a chill mode. And there I was presented with an ethical dilemma. Should I tell? Should I have spoken up? Should I have reminded her of the items which she may very well have overlooked? I once got out to the parking lot (store name withheld) and found an item under my jacket. I did not return to the store and pay for it. Instead, I thought of all the rotten oranges in the bags of oranges I have bought or of all the avocados which were one third mushy and brown. Also I applied the predictable, “Well, it won’t break their bank” rationale.

Last year on New Year’s Eve day, I was waiting with my number slip at Mariano’s deli counter. People were four deep but basically jolly and jocular. A very tall, muscular fellow wearing a slick leather jacket I could describe in detail but will not because I don’t want to be hunted down, was ordering slices of prosciutto. Kinda pricey, actually. Each time the girl added slices to the stack on the scale and turned to slice some more, this guy ate three or four slices. She added more to the pile, turned to continue slicing and he ate three or four more pieces. Did I mention he was a big guy? Did I mention how confident and smooth he was? And brutish and downright intimidating? Suffice it to say, I did not rat on him. I looked around but no one else seemed to be noticing. When he had had his fill, he told the girl, who was getting dizzy and confused, “Just wrap what ya got there, doll.” Fruitful Yield offers little plastic cups with samples of nuts, cookies and granola bars laid out on a table by the entryway. One day they had bite-sized samples

of yellow cake with pink frosting. I took one. It was divine so I did some shopping and when there were enough people at the sample table that I might be inconspicuous, I snuck in and took another. I did not buy the cake mix or the frosting mix being advertised. Kleins keeps pint containers of cherry tomatoes on the counter by the register. Until I was corrected by one of the ladies who works there ( and she was very nice about it ), I had assumed they were samples and popped a few with each purchase. An honest error. Boy, they were good. After the lady spoke to me, I bought an extra pint. One day while walking down Commonwealth Avenue in Boston on my way to class, I saw a twenty dollar bill on the sidewalk. It had been raining. The bill was sticking to the cement. This was in the late sixties during the days of the TV show, “Candid Camera.” Something about the position of the bill put me on alert. It lay face up, perfectly flat and perfectly centered in the middle of the sidewalk square. No bill

Expression: A Red Letter Day

The Heartest Time of Year by Vanessa Passo Bold colors of pink and red line the aisles of grocery stores, plush animal toys seep out of shelves, and heart-shaped everything is stocked. The infamously named “Hallmark holiday” is arriving faster than Cupid could shoot his lovebow. Valentine’s Day, which falls on the 14th of February of every year, is known to be celebrated worldwide as a day to cherish and shower loved ones with gifts, and nonetheless, love. Flowers and cards are exchanged, dinner reservations are made, decadent desserts are shared in symbolism of the sweetness of love … the romance of the day stems from as early as the innocence of youth. Children in schools familiarize themselves with the feeling of warmth when receiving a small, folded piece of paper adorned with a heart-shaped sticker.

Something as minuscule as a box of conversation hearts given by another classmate produces feelings of joy and companionship, and the rest of the day is spent succumbing to endless chocolates and sugary love notes.

Bows and Eros For as happy as the traditions may appear, the origins of the day were far less pleasant. There are several events that explain the day’s birth. According to National Public Radio, Inc., Valentine’s Day can be traced back to the Romans of the 3rd century. On February 1315, the Feast of Lupercalia was celebrated to essentially abuse women and hold a matchmaking lottery. Women were whipped with the hides of a goat (symbolizing fertility) and dog (symbolizing purification). Among other brutal events, each male was paired with a woman and was required to spend the remainder of the festival together. Many of the lottery pairs remained coupled, and went on to marry well after the festivities ended.

One legend tells that Valentine was a priest who served in the 3rd century. Emperor Claudius II had outlawed marriage for single men, so Valentine performed marriages for young lovers, ultimately resulting in his death. Another legend holds that Valentine sent the first valentine card to a woman while imprisoned, signing it “from your Valentine,” which has become a household phrase for the holiday that has carried over to the 21st century. Although the exact origins of the day may be unclear, it is stated by the National Public Radio, Inc., that the brutal feasts and executions were romanticized by none other than Shakespeare. Handmade paper cards were created and sent as the “token du jour”, literally meaning “gift of the day.”

Turner describes the event as “a community dinner that invites all people from all walks of life.” Although it may sound like a hefty bill to pay for just one family-oriented man, Turner is not alone in his efforts to bring a community together through love and food. “Local businesses, organizations, individuals, churches, civic groups, fire fighters and city departments bring their famous [pasta] sauce and compete for the best sauce. We supply everything else.” It is true that love knows no boundaries, especially in terms of Turner’s dinner guest list. Turner said, “Our goal when we opened was to do four community dinners a year where all are invited. Rich, poor, any race, color or origin. They are a time for community to come together.” “It is interesting that the love-theme carries through the dinner,” Turner said. “We have young couples that come to help celebrate, older couples, families, homeless, and many more, and I feel that everyone shares their love together as one at these dinners.” No faces in the Elgin neighborhood are strangers to Turner; his deli, In the Neighborhood, has been opened for almost 10 years, including a café located

right inside of Elgin’s own Gail Borden Library, which opened five years ago. “The community dinners started nine years ago, and the Have a Heart dinner started eight years ago,” Turner said.

“This has become my family’s tradition, as it has for many others,” Turner said, who anticipates “anywhere from 800-1200 people” for this year’s Have a Heart dinner.

The Hallmark Chattel Although very different in reasoning, the celebrations that take place on Valentine’s Day, from even the 3rd century, allow for others to share in affection and adoration for not only each other, but for all aspects of life. The value in society for a day dedicated to love is to spread it. “If [Valentine’s Day] is just used to sell candy and flowers, then no. Although that is fine, it’s about the love for one another,” Turner said. Streamwood resident Guillermo Zenteno, 22, agrees that “the world really needs love right now, among other things, especially with some events and tragedies that have happened in the world the past few months. I think there could be a lot of value in society as to dedicating

February 14 is a day that reiterates the importance of helping and loving one another, regardless of how others choose to celebrate. Love is an emotion that has no boundaries or limits, and it is clear that most individuals choose to express that daily to loved ones. Love benefits society in so many ways. Whether it be a community dinner, a dinner enjoyed between two partners, a folded piece of paper adorned with a heart sticker or a decadent dessert shared, Valentine’s Day can remind a world often consumed with hate that there is never too much love to be shared. And a little chocolate never hurt anybody. Vanessa Passo of St. Charles is a graduate of Elgin Community College where she was Managing Editor of the ECC Observer. Between helping manage her family’s pizza business, she’s an inspiring journalist who writes for her own blog and locally freelances.

To some, a day dedicated to something like love sounds like it is filled with good intentions and intimacy, however it is clear that most individuals who aren’t enthralled by heart-shaped boxes of candies all share a common understanding that love is not a finite feeling to limit to one day.

“The holiday was created just to move gifts during a time that has fewer celebratory holidays,” William Stringfellow, 21, Elgin Community College Alumnus said. “Shouldn’t you show those you love that you care instead of pretending a card and subpar chocolates once a year shows love?” Stringfellow’s opinions do not stand alone; it appears common for others to opt out of Valentine-related celebrations.

Nonetheless, the romanticism of the day is a charming thought, but to some individuals, one day does not seem long enough to spread the feeling of love that should be shared all year round.

“It gives some couples something to look forward to, and that can be important, though,” Jancauskas said. Chris Johnson, Elgin resident, agrees that “what counts in [my wife’s and my] relationship is how we treat each other every day, and not just on the days tradition sets aside.” There is no disagreement among society that Valentine’s Day entails (quite literally) heartfelt traditions, however, it is not unusual to experience a lack of celebration.
