Rolling Their Own Now that smoking is banned from practically every public or commercial building, and all but about 15% of Americans have kicked the habit, what do we do with all those cigarette vending machines? One idea was sparked in 1997, when artist Clark Whittington converted one into what he named the Art-o-mat®, a vending machine that dispensed original artwork mounted on blocks the size of a cigarette pack. Joining forces with other artists in Winston-Salem, NC they formed

the Artists in Cellophane, and launched a movement to encourage art consumption using relics from tobacco’s glory days. Eventually this concept caught the attention of researchers David Metzger and Mike Rende at Elgin’s Oddball Art Labs, where they sought to replicate the experiment. “Dave sent out an email to the group saying ‘we should do something like this.’ Mike found a working machine available for sale in Milwaukee. So, one

about 2,000 of them. The blocks are supplied to any artist who wishes to participate.

With the help of Ken Simonsen, the team scrubbed off seventy years of nicotine stains from the old machine and cleaned and lubricated its internals. Metzger designed graphics for the header including its new name, “The Mobile Art Machine.”

“Each artist gets their own channel, as long as they create at least 10 blocks,” staff of the Labs explained. “Customers will know the style and theme of the art they will get, but they will not know the exact image they will receive. Part of the fun is the surprise.”

“Ken applied the shiny red vinyl to the body and applied the graphics to the plexiglas with a couple of extra hands. It was also Ken’s idea to add the wheels on the bottom — they allow us to move it without emptying the machine.” Only arcade-style tokens will work through the slot on the front, and they can be purchased from the host business wherever the machine is located. For each block purchased, the artist receives $2.50. The remainder of the proceeds is used to carry on the work of Oddball Art Labs, which produces exhibits, develops new art projects and donates to charity.

Regular and Unfiltered

There is also a Mystery Channel, which contains an assortment of unsold blocks from other channels that were cleared out for new art coming in. “You never know what you’ll get if you choose this channel, but it’s something that was almost sold out, so you know it’s going to be good.”

Need An Art Fix Back when these machines were found in every tavern, bowling alley, and bus station, the price was around 55 cents. Now a pack of smokes costs at least six bucks down in tobacco country, and as much as $13 in Illinois and New York. At the Mobile Art Machine, the noncarcinogenic price-per-thrill is only five dollars.

We’re spreading original art to people that may have thought art was too expensive, or out of reach, or just not for them. Changing that mindset, for us, is the success.” Caution: it can be habit-forming. For this year’s gift-giving season, the Machine will have a “pre-wrapped” channel, so customers can buy a piece of art for a friend or family member and be just as surprised when the gift is opened. Don’t worry, there aren’t any blocks of coal in there, “but there are a lot of amazing charcoal drawings by Jane Erlandson.”

To date, the Mobile Art Machine has served duty at the Martini Room, Side Street Studio Arts and the Blue Box Cafe. It’s current location, including examples from the current lineup of artists, can be found at the Oddball Art Labs website. Any artist wishing to contribute, or business interested in hosting the machine should contact the Lab at oddballartlabs.org or on Facebook. —JP

You Can’t Take it With You At first the Sycamores seem mad, but it is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder. In contrast to these delightful people are the unhappy Kirbys. The plot shows how Tony, attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening. The shock sustained by the Kirbys, who are invited to eat cheap food, shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question. DALA by Vanessa Passo Two high school best friends who flourished into a duo of their own musical artistry are bringing their angelic harmonies and acoustic folk sound to the Elgin Community College stage on Saturday, December 8. The Canadian female duo Dala focuses on sounds of acoustic folk and pop, while providing infectious energy at their live shows with inventive musicality. Since the 2002 debut of Dala, the duo has released five studio albums, toured across North America, and can add title of ‘Vocal Group of the Year’ to their accomplishments, awarded in 2018 by the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Their latest album, 2012’s Best Day, was “nominated for three Canadian Folk Music Awards: English Songwriter of the Year, Vocal Group of the Year and Producer of the Year,” according to the dalagirls.com website. Dala’s Sheila Carabine has shared an inside scoop of where the duo began, how the journey’s been so far, and what the ECC

audience can expect from their appearance at the Arts Center on December 8th. Who are the members of Dala and what are their ages? Dala is best friends Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine, and they’re old enough to agree to say that “age is just a number. A number higher than 25”. How long has Dala been a duo? When did it all begin? Amanda and I met in high school, in our high school instrumental music class. Amanda played the bass clarinet and I played the trumpet. Our connection as friends was really solidified when we realized that we both loved the Beatles, and that our dads both played guitar and sang English and Irish folk songs. We officially started our duo about 16 years ago.

from

How did Dala first begin as a female duo group? We wrote a song together, using the four chords we collectively knew on guitar. Amanda was in art college at the time, moving in circles with other artists, singers and performers. This eclectic group would regularly host open mic shows at a small venue in Toronto called “Holy Joe’s.” We first started performing our original songs, plus some covers, at these monthly get togethers, back in 2002. What singer/songwriter/ artist inspires the sound of the group?

Sheila Carabine.

Our mission is to put a spotlight on Dundee businesses, offering fine and casual dining, unique shopping opportunities and personable professional services, to all nearby communities as well as our own villages.

We take our inspiration from artists like The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Eliza Gilkyson, Crosby Stills Nash

and Young. Canadian singer songwriter Jann Arden is also a big inspiration, because she manages to weave a lot of humor into her shows, while still managing to take herself and her audience to some truly vulnerable and moving places. What was each woman’s background before becoming Dala? Was music always in your lives? We both grew up in households where music was understood to be the truest and highest language of emotion. Amanda’s whole family sings together at family gatherings. Amanda is also a visual artist, having pursued sculpture and installation at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Aside from music, I have a passion for language and poetry, having pursued a Masters in English at the University of Toronto.

One of the highlights of our many years on the road would have to be our 2009 appearance at the Newport Folk Festival. It was the 50th anniversary of the festival, so the lineup of artists was especially star-studded. At one point we were backstage watching the Fleet Foxes (one of our favorite bands) perform, only to look around and see Joan Baez and Judy Collins greeting each other like old friends. Pete Seeger was chatting with Billy Bragg. Arlo Guthrie had just walked in. The whole experience was surreal. It was like we had died and gone to folk heaven.

We have a lot of new songs, and we’re looking forward to sharing stories about our recent adventures. Amanda has been writing the soundtrack for an indie film called Walk With Me, currently being shot in Brooklyn and set to be released in 2019. I’ve been writing music for a new project called “Kennedy Road”, with a debut album set to be released next year. It’s been really heartening to find that as we continue to be inspired by all these new opportunities, our connection as friends and our enjoyment of performing together as Dala has only gotten stronger. We have never felt more excited about our music, and we can’t wait to share that excitement with our fans in Elgin.

Expression: The Way I Work

Not Your Hook Girl Listening to Emmy Linker’s music stream through your computer’s sound system, you’d assume it was made in a studio with high end gear, engineers and producers, backing vocalists and a band. You’d be wrong.

Great musicians — from Beethoven to Frank Zappa — have a gift of musical comprehension and memory. In Emmy’s case, “I can hear a song once, and the next time I hear it I know all the words.”

“I’m literally recording on my laptop,” she says.

That could explain how she was able to teach herself to play guitar and keyboard, write lyrics, sing, perform, and technically produce music at this level entirely by herself.

It’s a school-issued Chromebook that she bought for $90 after graduation. Using a library of lyrics stored in Google Drive, a couple of instruments and the recording tools available on soundtrap.com, she can write and record a song in one evening.

“When I write songs, it happens right then and there. It’s always done that night. I feel like when I’m in that state of mind, whatever comes to my head, whatever sounds I want to hear, it has to all be right there.” The technology makes it possible not only to capture these inpsirations spontaneously and develop them immediately, it’s also possible to publish the music instantly online. A less disciplined artist might be tempted to do that.

It’s the only way she works. “I like things to be done my way. People say I’m a diva, but they got the wrong impression. I want it to be all on me. If I accomplish something, then I did it myself. If I screw up, then it’s on me.” Despite being self-taught to this point, Emmy isn’t opposed getting professional training. She’s auditioning for a spot at the American Music and Drama Academy College and Conservatory in Los Angeles. “I just want

“I have a lot of material waiting to come out,” she says. “It’s unreleased because I’m a perfectionist. I just constantly go back and say ugh, that sounds weird ... gotta fix that.” Emmy’s high standards are evident in the collection of recordings she has on Soundcloud. Her polished and graceful vocals are multitracked with layers of harmonies and backing parts, accompanied by chill R&B beats and grooves that make a very listenable set of commercial-sounding three minute tracks.

to learn as much as I can and really be educated on the business of it. I feel like people won’t take you seriously unless you can prove you know enough.” Unfortunately, she’s already had to face disrespect in the local music scene, particularly by older male artists interested in using her voice for backing vocals on their own projects. “I’m not a hook girl, I’m an artist,” she told them. “I’m not just a voice for you to use on your song, to say whatever you want. I want to sing what I write.” That fierce independence comes through in the words to songs like “They Don’t” and “Serious” and her most played track “The Dopest,” all released in 2018. She says her music also deals with relationships, emotional struggles and coming of age. “I feel like people can’t understand me, because I can’t put it into words. So I put it into my music the best I can. It’s my way of communicating with people: this is how I feel, take it or leave it.” In person, she gives a confident, well-spoken and sincere interview. With her talent and looks, the strength of her individuality might be her most important asset in pursuing success in an incredibly competitive business. “When they call me a hook girl and I say no, I’m different and I want to do things my way, they say that’s not how it works. I don’t care how they say it works, this is how I work.”   —JP

Dickens in Dundee Dickens in Dundee was formed in 1988. It began as a small community gathering, with caroling and the search for Tiny Tim’s crutch in local stores. With the support of local businesses, this event has grown significantly and attracts people from all over the Dundee area. This year’s 31st annual Dickens in Dundee will take place in East Dundee on Friday, November 30th, with a parade to follow on Saturday, December 1st. The weekend kicks off each year on the first Friday in December, with tree lighting ceremonies in both East and West Dundee. Residents and visitors stroll through downtown East and West Dundee to see local merchant’s windows “come alive” during Living Windows. Saturday begins with the cornerstone event: the Spirit of Christmas Parade. The parade begins at Second Street in West Dundee and travels across the Main Street Bridge into East Dundee, ending near the Dundee Township Visitors Center (The Depot) on River Street. Other popular events include Gingerbread House Making, Festival of Trees, Santa’s Petting Zoo and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus himself! Illinois Hieroglyphics: A Detective Story from Early Illinois Indigenous History Locked away in a museum in Paris, are four art objects associated with the Native peoples of Illinois. Among the most stunning examples of Native American art from any period, these painted hide robes are especially valuable because of their age. Collected sometime in the late 1600s or early 1700s, the large robes are decorated with geometrical and abstract designs, tantalizing clues about the people who made them - yet, in many respects, the hides have long been a mystery. Although certain features of the hides imply much about their identity, the specific circumstances of their origins in the Illinois Country are not known. Consequently, historians have not been able to discern what sorts of stories these hide robes can tell us about the past. 7p, Elgin Public Museum, 225 Grand Boulevard 847.741.6655 elginpublicmuseum.org. “Offer Never Expires” This is the latest in our series of reprints of old Elgin advertising, featuring the artwork, photographs, writing and business ideas of previous generations of Elginites. In the coming months, we’ll feature ads particularly from 1935 and 1985, when every proud local business placed an ad in a special edition of the daily newspaper honoring Elgin’s Centennial and Sesquicentennial. Vintage Elgin National Watch Company ads are from the collection of Jennifer Fukala.

How to Get Your Events Listed for FREE in The FEED Publishing and promoting all the things to do in Elgin is why we started BRAVO. We are eager to fill our pages with your events, concerts, festivals, lectures, arts happenings and more.

What We Don’t Want Commercial messages, like “$9.99 Friday Fish Fry” belong in your ad, not in the FEED. Since BRAVO is freely distributed to the general public, private events should not be listed.

Repeating Events Some kinds of events repeat regularly, like bird watching or French conversation groups. If these events are open, they are welcome in the FEED.

Basic Event Submission Visit our online event submission page and fill out the form. Fill in all your event details, along with your own contact info in case there are questions.

Automatic Submission Fortunately, we have a means of collecting events from certain kinds of schedules you post on your website or social media. If your website has a built-in calendar feature, there’s a good

chance that your scheduled event data can be accessed over the internet, in a form that’s conducive to publishing in the FEED.

Google Calendar If you have a Google account, you have free access to a suite of useful tools, including a calendar that can be accessed as an RSS feed. Edit your calendar settings and make your calendar public (or share it with us). You can obtain the URL of your calendar’s RSS feed by clicking the “XML” button. Boom! Send us that URL!

FEED.links http://www.marqueemedia.net/events Fill out the form with your event title, date, time, location, phone number, short description, and price. Your name, email and phone number are also required in case we need to double-check your details! http://www.findmyfacebookid.com Go to the Facebook profile page for your business. Copy the URL (web address) shown in your browser’s location field. Go to findmyfacebookid.com and paste your profile page URL into the box at the top of the screen. Click Submit. “Would you text Derek and tell him the GPS says we’ll get there at 8:41 ...?” Jessica took Wayne’s phone out of the cup holder and tapped the text message as they took the exit ramp for Shoreland Parkway. After two minutes, Wayne’s phone chimed. “He says Sounds good. Hope ur dressed warm, NYE fire buckets ... What are fire buckets?” Jessica wondered. “No idea,” muttered Wayne as they turned down the road to Prescott Lake. About a dozen cars were lined up in the low snow banks along both sides of the road in front of the lake house where the party was supposed to be. Wayne parked as close as he could, and then lifted a large, high-end quality picnic cooler out of the trunk. Jessica carried a tote bag with two bottles of wine as they walked through crunchy snow to the front door, where a note said “Come on in, we’re in back.” There was no one inside the house except a woman in the kitchen opening and closing all the drawers and cabinets. “Do you know where they keep the flashlight?” she asked. Wayne put the cooler down on the kitchen island and Jessica said, “Sorry, we’re guests, we’ve never been here before ...” There was no sign of a party. Wayne glanced around the kitchen and dining room and asked, “Where should I put out my appetizer?” “That’s all set up outside,” the woman said, “go right out through those patio doors.” There were two pop-up canopies strung with twinkle lights in the back yard overlooking the

lake. Beneath each one were folding tables with an array of slow cookers and electric roasters, bags of rolls and chips, cracker boxes, plates of cheese and sausage, disposable plates and cups and dozens of bottles of liquor. At least twenty people were gathered around a fire in an outdoor hearth surrounded by a patio. Derek walked over to the food tables when he saw his friends arrive. “Glad you could make it,” he grinned, and pointed at Wayne’s cooler. “Is that beer?” “No, there’s a hot appetizer in a chafing dish inside here, trying to stay warm,” he snickered. “I had no idea the whole party would be outside.” “We didn’t either,” Derek said quietly. “Did you happen to bring chairs?” “No, afraid not.” Wayne put the cooler down in the snow beneath one of the tables. “I need something to warm me up.” He poured himself a bourbon in a red plastic tumbler and Jessica filled a clear cup with Malbec. A woman waved to them from the patio and they waved back. “Dude, what are fire buckets? You didn’t say anything about that when you invited us to this.” “Right, so ... Brett, the guy who lives here, owns a parking lot sealing and striping business, and they use a lot of paint and sealcoat that comes in five gallon metal drums. He saves the empties all year for these fire bucket nights. Come here, I’ll show you.” The three of them walked around the side of the house to a small cargo van with its rear

doors open. By the light of two large oil lanterns hanging from tree branches, they could see inside the van: there were stacks of the empty metal drums, all painted with unique colors and patterns, and a pile of bricks. “So basically you pay twenty dollars and get a bucket with a brick inside. Then everybody goes out on the lake and builds a fire inside their bucket. The first bucket that melts all the way through the ice wins all the money.” “Seriously? You’ve done this before?” Wayne taunted. “I didn’t think anything could be boring and dangerous at the same time, but this might be it.” They heard footsteps in the snow behind them. “Perfect night for fire buckets! It’s thirty degrees and the ice is right at five inches.”

guys give me a hand for a sec?” Brett took a large electric drill from the front seat of the van, plugged it in, and had Derek and Wayne hold the drums one at time while he drilled two holes in opposite sides, five inches up from the bottom. “What are the holes for?” Wayne asked. “Two things,” Brett said. “They let air in so the fire can breathe and get hot, and when the bucket melts through the ice, the water can flood in and put the fire out.”

“Brett, this is my buddy Wayne Chen and his girlfriend Jessica,” Derek announced. “Guys, this is Brett.” “Hey nice to meet you, thanks for coming!” Brett gushed, and shook Wayne’s hand. “Can you

“Okay,” Jessica sneered, “I’ll meet you boys by the patio. I’m getting another glass of wine.” “Um ... Jessica?” Brett interrupted, “Can you tell Clem to bring everybody back here that wants a bucket?” She agreed. After refilling her glass, she took a large gulp, went to the patio and said loudly “Clem! Brett wants everybody to get their buckets!” “Everybody ... follow me!” announced a large,

drunk man in a long wool Army surplus coat. He marched back to the truck and sat on the bumper, where he collected twenty dollars from almost all of the guests as they came by twos and threes to get a spray-painted bucket with a brick inside, then head out onto the frozen lake. Wayne and Derek each gave Clem their money, and carried their buckets and the two lanterns out onto the ice. Clem followed with a wheelbarrow full of lumber scraps and grocery sacks stuffed with newspapers. “They’ve never done this many buckets before,” Derek observed. “It’s usually like six or eight at the most.” “How deep is this lake?” Wayne asked as they reached a twenty-foot circle of rough, bare ice where the snow had been cleared away. Between rowdy outbursts and horseplay, people started placing buckets on the ice a few feet apart, and filled them with crumpled newspaper and small boards. Clem dribbled a little

lantern fuel and dropped a lit wooden match into each one.

“Wang Lay. Wow. What’s in the cooler Wang Lay?”

Within a few minutes the entire scene was aglow with the flames from the fire buckets. Several guests brought chairs out onto the ice with plates of food and full cups of booze. Wayne carried his cooler out to the ice and Jessica brought plates and utensils. They opened the lid and put some of their own warm appetizer on their plates, then closed the lid and sat on it.

Wayne finished chewing, swallowed and dabbed his mouth with a napkin. “Spicy fish balls,” he said flatly. Jessica sighed and rolled her eyes, knowing what would come next.

Slouching in a folding camp chair, Clem took notice. He took a swig from a hip flask and slurred, “Hey, what are you doing here? Chinese New Year isn’t until February...” He guffawed as someone yelled “Clem, shut up!” Wayne and Jessica did not react. “Who are you ... what’s your name ...” Clem mumbled. “Wayne. And this is Jessica,” Wayne replied. “Wayne? Like John Wayne? That’s not a Chinese name ...” “My Chinese name is Huang Lei.” Wayne took a bite.

Clem started giggling, causing himself to cough a little, then said in a loud, affected voice, “Everybody meet Wang Lay with the spicy fish balls!” “Shut up, Clem, don’t start with that!” a woman yelled. “Pay no attention to him, he’s a jerk even when he’s sober.” “Wang Lay ... spicy fish balls ...” Clem smirked. “I feel sorry for you buddy...” “Well I feel sorry for you, “ Wayne spoke up, “for being so damned ignorant.” Clem sat upright in his chair. “Hey f*ck you ... go back to China!” Clem bellowed. “You can go to hell for all I care!” “Naw you go to hell dude!” Wayne shot back, “I’m from Seattle.” He got up from the cooler and went back to the yard

with his plate and cup. Jessica followed. They left the cooler where it was. They spent the next two hours with Derek and his wife on the patio, drinking and nibbling, talking and watching the fire buckets from shore. As the bricks and drums began to radiate heat, the ice underneath them melted, but so did the entire surface of ice between and around all the buckets. Water pooled, and mists of condensation started to rise. Showers of embers rose in puffs of smoke as Clem and several others stayed out there kicking buckets and poking at the fires. Sometimes a dark silhouette could be seen gulping Everclear from a bottle and spitting it into the air where it lit up the night sky with blue and orange flames.

lake and stood in the puddles around the smoldering fire buckets. “Three minutes!” one shouted. Derek coaxed the foursome out onto the ice, but they stayed in the back of the crowd. “Ten! ... Nine! ... Eight! ... Seven! ...” Clem stepped up and stood on top of Wayne’s cooler which was still where he had left it. “Six! ... Five! ... Four! ... Three! ...” Clem pulled a pistol out of his coat and held it up in the air over his head. “Two! ... One! ...” BRAVO serial fiction presents an original short story by a local writer in a series of short sections of approximately 1000 words each. From This River Town

Sucker Hah! You got sucked in. Lucky you. You opened that book and you were hooked.

A reader who’s opened a book to its first page is in a tender predicament. Whether she’s standing in the aisle of a bookstore or sitting at home. All the authority belongs to her — the authority to close the book. And yet she’s willing — yearning — to surrender her authority to the author, And keep reading. — from Several Short Sentences About Writing by Verlyn Klinkenborg That experience, “yearning — to surrender” to a book, applies to many of us. Choosing a book is one thing, but having a book choose you is quite another. It would be difficult to recount the times and circumstances when a book has fallen from a shelf or been placed into my hands during a time of need. It’s gremlins, I guess, pushing those books on to the floor of the library or bookstore. They hang out there, within the shelves, you know. They make their assessments as you approach, and quick as a lick on a cinnamon stick, they nudge out a book. If you miss it, they slap their little foreheads and shove the book to the floor. You pick it up. You wonder. You look at the front and back covers and then you open it. Sucker.

by Mary Ellen Goodwill You’re a sucker for a good book and you are about to surrender your authority to the author. Ahhh ... In writing class we would look at a short list of first lines or sentences from unnamed books. Students would mark which ones engaged them enough that they would want to read further. Volunteers would read them aloud and then we would share our opinions. What was hooking anyone to read on and what was turning them off? When we had discussed and rated the lines, their rhythm, word choice, imagery, whatever the students brought up, we moved along to a second page. This sheet contained second lines in random order. Their task was to match up the lines. This was an involving lesson which resulted in the students’ working quietly and intently matching lines. They were quick to share their conclusions. What matched with what and why? Would they want to read more?

Here are the second lines in random order for a match-up with an extra thrown in for the challenge: A. “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in the world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” B. It had been a hard winter in northern Montana, so hard that ravens sometimes fell from the sky in midflight, their insides just snapping, it seemed, and like great ragged clumps of black cloth they’d fall into the woods, or into a pasture, landing a few weeks shy of spring. C. They would come out from the house where they lived and walk arm in arm down the street to work. D. The white borders of the screen doors were incandescent with mountain summer. E. You see, I was on the verge of doing something truly different in my life, something totally unexampled.

Here are some first lines (Do any engage you? Would you want to read on?):

F. All my life, the garden has been a great teacher in everything I cherish.

1. John Briggs sat on his porch on a dreary hot August day with a glass of ice water sweating in his hand, listening to opera on the radio.

Below are the books and authors:

2. In the town there were two mutes, and they were always together. 3. Why is the act of cultivating so compelling? 4. In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. 5. In February, after the Chinook blew through, thawing people’s faces into smiles and making the women look happy again, and making the men look like men again, rather than pouting little boys — in February, the preacher for the Grass Valley, Mahatma Joe Drag, began a rampage not unlike those of other springs.

I. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers II. Gallatin Canyon by Thomas McGuane III. Sundog by Jim Harrison IV. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald V. Platte River by Rick Bass VI. The Wild Braid by Stanley Kunitz Will you be reading on? Answers are hidden in this issue. Have fun!

Audrey Gilbert [not pictured] fondly remembers the glory days of shopping and services in downtown Elgin. She misses the variety of retail that moved from here to the malls in the 1970s. Her wish for downtown is “more retail shops, speciality boutiques like the Soulful Sparrow, clothing stores, shoe repair” and a shoe store. Gilbert also remembers the Fannie May candy shop and assorted department stores that lined the downtown streets. Antoinette Spiering would like to see “an independent clothing store for all sizes.” Spiering also has a unique business idea, a “wine bar with rescue dogs — therapy for people and animals.” On the other side, business owners want to see more foot traffic in general. Special events, such as Art and Soul, the Farmers Market, and similar festivals downtown do increase business, but all owners would welcome a lot more people on the streets each day. As the old adage goes, “use it or lose it.” Certainly our wonderful Downtown is worth using, so let’s not lose it!    —DT

A Wishful Poem* Santa, dear Santa, hear from us Elginites; Whatever you do, please don’t take flight, until our downtown gets some marvelous insight. Bring us some hope, shiny and bright ... for all good souls to unite ‘neath the banner of shared delight ... Dear Santa, We want a DOG Park, a doggie treat shop, and for us humans, an old-fashioned candy store. But, wait, there’s much more. Indulge us, dear Santa, and hear our roar: How about clothing stores with fashions for tall to small, whether size 2 or 200, that’ll cover it all. We want a little market, for milk and eggs or the occasional Bartlett. Add a shoe store with a cobbler to make the repairs, And new shoes, please, to add to our lairs. More music, live music is the wish for some, Hire musicians, and the people will come. But most of all, Santa, give us foot traffic Let people know Elgin has so much magic. Hang banners and billboards, mighty and tall. Send a message to commuters: Elgin has all! From the three Metra stations, State highways and by-ways, the mighty Fox River, and our great City Hall. Don’t go Loco: Shop Local Thanksgiving is over; Black Friday’s deals are sealed. The gates to the massive consumer spending spree are wide open, beckoning the bargain hunters to enter the land wherein almost anything can be had for a price. Encouraged by advertisements from all directions — internet, TV, radio, print, billboards — people clog the aisles of the big box stores. Droves of people jam the highways and crowd the malls in a frantic search for the best deals and the closest parking spots. They scour the internet for bargains galore and hunt down the Sunday papers for coupons, bonus points, and one-day-only specials. The race to the finish comes down to

45

waiting in line, long lines, or waiting (hoping) for intact delivery. Will a package thief darken their door? All this adds stress to what should mean more. Where is the spirit and good wishes of the season? It’s enough to turn the most cheerful, gung-ho Christmas lover into the Grinch! What if you could turn down the volume on crazy and actually enjoy the gift buying blitz? While enjoying the process of thoughtfully shopping, you’d be doing good for the betterment of your community too. “How can I do such a wondrous thing,” you may ask. The answer is easy and in your own back yard: Shop local.

We’ll see you soon for

Remember Shop Small Saturday, the day after Black Friday? The tradition of Shop Small began, ironically enough, with credit card giant American Express, which rolled out the idea in 2010. Customers were encouraged to patronize small businesses in an effort to increase business in the community and build awareness of the connections between a healthy community and thriving independent businesses. The idea was so well received it became a nationally sanctioned holiday by the next year, 2011. Shop Small is, overall, a success story. Yet for many local businesses, it is a makeor- break sales day. If they get a big enough bump in sales before the year’s end, then the lights can stay on for another year. We’ve all seen the effects on towns and cities when its economy dries up and blows away. It’s devastating to residents and businesses alike. With that thought in mind, we ought to take pride in our downtown, for it gives Elgin its unique charm and character. This year, why not try something different? Consider the shops in downtown Elgin. There, you will find gifts you can’t get anywhere else. For instance, how about a piece of original art starting at just $5.00 a pop? Perhaps a gift certificate to a live performance is just the ticket for your culturally inclined friend. What about an Elgin history-themed gift? Don’t forget the foodie on your list who may be eager to try the newest restaurants downtown. Maybe you aren’t aware that we have four new restaurants on Grove Street: wood-fired pizza, breakfast/baked treats/coffee spot with a great 2nd floor view, gourmet hot dogs and a sushi place. Did you know Elgin has its very own popcorn mix? An award-winning martini bar? Now, to burn off all those calories, there are indoor exercise options. Yes, we have the fabulous riverfront trail to bike, walk, or run, but baby, it’s cold outside! No need to freeze your tail-feathers — leave that to the birds. Instead, try a yoga or personalized fitness session in a comfortable setting in a charming, antique building. Toughen up your kid with boxing lessons, and see those bullies run away in fear! Why not give a loved one a month’s trial of yoga or training to encourage those New Year’s resolutions to come?

For those audiophile and literary types, downtown is home to a bookstore with coffee and more, and a record store that features vinyl from today and yesterday, plus a few other goodies. Douglas Avenue is home to two boutiques, a knitter’s paradise and a modern shop that mixes the latest fashion finds with a curated collection of cleverly recycled antique pieces. In addition, you’ll see the home of WRMN’s live radio shopping show, where you can visit the Redemption Center and pick up valuable coupons for a song. Bring your children to see a DJ working the radio booth. Just around the corner are two coffee shops, each with distinct coffee drinks, sandwiches and more. Stop for a break and have a quick bite so you have energy to stroll over to Chicago street, where more surprises await you. What historic town would be complete without an antique shop or two? Explore the treasures of days gone by in the shops on Chicago Street. Here you will find one-of-a-kind gifts certain to delight those on your list who have a nostalgic side. (Really, who doesn’t?) More intriguing businesses line both sides of the street, from cupcakes to authentic Mexican bakery and dress shops, spa and tattoo emporiums and more restaurants. Elgin is fortunate to have its own history museum. It’s a friendly, welcoming place with a really nice gift shop. Located in an impressive building on Park St., it perches proudly on a high hill. Once part of the Elgin Academy, the building dates back to 1856. The Museum highlights the impact the Elgin National

Watch Company and the dairy industry had on the rise of the city. Plan a visit and walk away with a new appreciation for our city, and perhaps pick up a stocking stuffer or two. You could surprise a history buff with a museum membership, which only costs $30.00 for a year. Indeed, downtown Elgin has many surprises in store, particularly if you haven’t spent much time here recently. There are lots of bargains to be found, but your dollars have more power than for mere purchase. When we shop locally, we support the people in our community, such as the small business leaders and artists. But your dollar goes even further because it brings revenue to the local government, which in turn uses those dollars for services and sponsorship of free events for us all to enjoy. Attractions bring visitors, who bring in more money for our city. A well-kept downtown with independent businesses generates outside interest, causing our city to continue to develop in a sensible way while retaining its unique characteristics. I would be remiss not to mention the beautiful old churches that huddle at the intersections of Center Street and Highland, Chicago, and Prairie avenues. Collectively known as “Holy Hill,” these places of worship inspire one to contemplate the meaning of the season. The oldest church in Elgin, built in 1836, offers solace to the weary. First Congregational Church, 256 East Chicago, hosts a Candlelight Meditation from 6-6:30 p.m. on most Mondays. What better reason to slow down, savor the holiday spirit, and enjoy the “City in the Suburbs.” —DT
