by Esther Kim The topic of Comfort Women in my work sparked during my junior year at Judson University. I was painting self-portraits of my memories as an International student in New Zealand and America. These self-portraits were a successful piece; however, they only carried personal and secretive meanings. I longed for my work to hold a deeper meaning and purpose. The Comfort Women portraits are my contribution as a female South Korean international student to memorialize the history of Korea. For those who have never intermingled with the subject of Comfort Women, they are rape victims from the war (Yun). These women were placed under requisition by the Japanese army and became a tool to relieve the soldiers’ sexual pleasure (Yun).

East Side Story Being a musician is as much about listening as it is about singing or playing. You need to have a good set of ears. Hearing is as essential to the medium as it is for verbal communication, which is one of the reasons why music is so frequently referred to as a language.

years, he would now say he’s more interested in starting fires — spiritual fires — as a Christian musician and band leader. Ironically, he started this steady transformation as neither a musician nor a serious believer.

Podemos oír a Dios en esta música (“We can hear God in this music”). That was the reaction of a Dominican couple after hearing a recording of “You Are Mine,” a song by Daniel Scott Bloomer, recorded in the Dominican Republic. It was just one of the many unexpected affirmations — this one uttered in Spanish — to which Bloomer attested during his description of a life journey that tends to return to Elgin’s east side as its gravitational center.

Months after breaking up with a girl he was living with in Harvard, he realized he was tired of being depressed, and needed something new to devote himself to.

“I’m a lion, a lancer and a maroon,” he says about growing up as a student at Lord’s Park Elementary, Larsen Middle School and Elgin High. He later earned a degree in Fire Science and Safety from Elgin Community College which makes him a Spartan as well. And though he served as a firefighter for Harvard for a few

Picking the Guitar

“I went into Bakes and bought a guitar,” he recalled about the music shop once located on Chicago Street. “I said to Rob, I’m getting out of this depression. I’m going after music.” Inspired by the chops of classic rock heroes like Jimi Hendrix and David Gilmour, he set out to be the best guitarist he could be, never intending to write lyrics or carry a message. “None of those things I knew.” Immersing himself in music, he started to meet talented people in the area like guitarist Patrick Murphy and songwriter Adam Begue. Listening to their creativity — and encouragement — he expanded his craft to include original songs, but it wasn’t until after another bout with loneliness and depression that he considered the role of music in his life. “I come from a Christian family, but I always had my back to Jesus,” he confessed. A spiritual awakening followed, and he began to understand why he was writing music. He recognized a purpose in the pain of his life experiences, and it changed how and what he expressed in song. “I sold out to Jesus.”

Bloomed by Force is a narrative of a young woman’s virginity taken away forcefully. A woman losing her virginity can be described as: “She blossomed for him like a flower” (Fitzgerald). However, countless Comfort Women were blossomed forcefully. Their vibrant petals were ripped piece by piece and stepped on. Works Cited Fitzgerald, F.Scott. The Great Gatsby. Penguin Books, 1950. an emphasis on studying, reading and learning about music in all its forms and applications. “I’m still learning, and I’ll always be a student ...” As a self-taught guitarist, he shared his appetite for learning as a guitar studio teacher at Weaver’s Music on Summit Street. He stayed until Larry and Bonnie Weaver retired and turned the business over to Jeff and Trish Grosser of Accurate Piano Service, an east side neighbor. Between lessons, he spent a lot of time developing his songwriting craft and imagining the music in a band format. In a conversation with one of his students, Kyle Trosien, the name “IAMbassadors” was born. Several months later another student, Joe Russell, joined Bloomer in a duo and played a live set for the first time as IAMbassadors in Lord’s Park, at the TLC Pregnancy Services annual Walk for Moms & Babies. They were soon joined by bassist Brian Ryndak and others, eventually forming a six piece band that performed multiple times at Vineyard Church’s

Street Reach ministry, at Love Elgin Day at First United Methodist Church, and other community events. Their sets included some of Bloomer’s original material mixed with covers of contemporary Christian songs.

Laying it All Down One of those songs was “You Are Mine,” an original dating back to 2015. At that time, he was active in the Elgin-based Jochy D Band, led by his brother-in-law, east sider Jochy de la Cruz. Jochy D was making records with producer Raffy Mercado of Harmonic Studio in the Dominican Republic, and Bloomer liked his studio sound. On a Christmas visit to see his in-laws in Santo Domingo, Bloomer successfully recorded “You Are Mine” as a single at Harmonic Studio. It got some radio play, and he proudly uploaded the track to the internet in November 2016. “I was trying to invite as many people as possible to YouTube, and post as much as possible,” he recalls, “and when you have a song that lots of people are enjoying, and it’s inhabiting their praise to God, you know ... how exciting.”

IAMbassadors, Summer 2018 at the House of Restoration Community Outreach, “Restoring Hope.”

It motivated him to start work on several more original records with Mercado, by capturing vocals in his home studio, Salt Light City Studio, and sending them to the D.R. But the projects seemed to lose momentum. “It was super discouraging.” To get things moving again, he started working with his two longtime friends and east-siders Andrew Moore and Andre Dyson (aka Cool Kennedy) at Studio 270 at Gail Borden Public Library. They recorded his vocals and sent the digital tracks down to Harmonic Studio for full music production. “It’s really awesome how Andrew and Andre are both just so supportive,” he said. “They just want to help in any way they can.” Recently, the album project entitled “Be Still” has regained traction with a very busy Raffy Mercado, and is on a timeline to be completed in Spring 2019. One song off the album, recorded at Studio 270, is “Mi Ancla” (“My Anchor”) the first Spanish language song written by Bloomer. Having worked with all Spanish material for years in the Jochy D band, and with encouragement from his Colombian vocal coach, it was only a matter of time that Spanish lyrics would appear in Daniel Scott’s

repertoire. “There’s something really beautiful about writing in Spanish.” It’s part of larger writing process that includes poetry in addition to musical lyrics. “When you write poetry, you write poetry, you don’t write the song,” he explained, “but poetry cultivates the lyric.” From his many years worth of material, Bloomer selected eleven songs for the upcoming album, and the first song release is set for early October, titled “Come Rest.”

Back to the Salt Mind Like most independent musicians, he relies on multiple occupations to support his art. The private teaching studio he first established with the Weavers is now known as Ninja Music Academy, and he has developed a thriving piano tuning and service business called Doppler Pitch. His friends in the Jochy D Band rely on him for instrumental backup when they make music videos or play festivals in the region, and he continues to serve in music ministry with his wife Zuni every Sunday, most recently at Christ Community Church’s Streamwood campus. Moreover, he is available for photography assignments, oper-

When asked about the demands of working, creating and constantly learning, he says “It’s all about the grind, the work, you know. You can’t wait around for inspiration or you won’t get anything done.” He relates a piece of advice on inspiration he heard from musician Jack White, explaining that you can find inspiration from just doing the work in front of you. “That matured me,” he said. “That was a life changer. You just work ... work ... there’s a grind to it.”

Evangelical artists in particular are always at risk of over-promoting themselves as messengers instead of furthering their message. “I’m very vigilant in that regard,” Bloomer says. Pam’s work, “We Are Stronger Together!” is currently being installed on the north facing wall of the Centre of Elgin’s parking deck. The wall of women’s faces, all unique in personality, set in colorful rectangular shapes and patters, form a sea of women stitched together, symbolizing a solid front.

She got her BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois and has been a working artist ever since; active is several local artist groups and showcasing her work in various galleries and exhibitions. In addition to the artistic works she has created, Pam is also a children’s book art designer. In describing her work, she says “My work is colorful, warm and makes people smile. I am inspired by nature, animals, the human body, and vintage photographs from the 50’s and 60’s. I am fascinated with painting the patterns, bubble, and fluidity of water.” She got her start in painting large scale murals with the Flat Iron Artist Association with a piece

Sculpture: Ben Pierce With his artwork being installed all over the country in the past seven years, Ben Pierce adds Elgin to the list of locations where his work will be on display. His work has explored many topics, but he is most often inspired by the resilience and beau-

ty of life. In speaking about his work Ben says, “This slight vagueness in the forms I create, challenge the audience to draw their own conclusions to the answer, ‘what is it?’ Drawing from their own experience/memory connects the audience more with the art because they see themselves in the work.” “Through,” is a collection of circles, each different from the others in size, shape, and material -though they are all created out of stainless steel- in this way, it is a celebration of the diversity of Elgin. The circles also represent the past and the future as it has no end and no beginning. The new sculpture will be installed in Foundry Park this fall. by Vanessa Passo Elgin Community College’s Art Center has been filled with sounds of blues, soul, rock ‘n’ roll, even improvisational comedy. However, the ECC stages have never seen (or heard) something like an all-female-countryfolk group. Until now. On October 27, at 7:00 p.m., The Wailin’ Jennys will take the stage at ECC to put on a show with unforgettable sound. It all began with Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody and Heather Masse. The three ladies joined forces to make up an international folk hit of distinct voices and unforgettable folk-pop sound: The Wailin’ Jennys. The Canadian trio had an accidental beginning. Nicky Mehta, founder of the Jennys, shared the story of where they began. “We started in 2002 as a oneoff: three singer songwriters who wanted to sing harmonies and play on each other’s songs,” Mehta said. “We set a date for a show at a little Winnipeg [Manitoba] guitar store. The show sold out way in advance so we added a second show. That sold out fast too so there was clearly some energy there.” Crowds took such a liking to their eclectic, country sound, that the group began to blossom. “Next thing we knew, we were being hired to play festivals across Canada,” Mehta said. “So, we followed the energy, and 16 years later we are still going strong, recording and touring all over the place.” Apart from their distinct vocals, and vibrant energy, their name is even more-so unforgettable. The ladies, however, did

not begin as the ‘Jennys’ most know them as today. “For our first show, we were just going to go by our last names,” Mehta said. “But our friend John, owner of the aforementioned guitar store, insisted that we would become a band and that we should have a name. He came up with all sorts of terrible names, but he also came up with The Wailin’ Jennys, which we embraced. It has done us well. Thanks, John.”

Sixteen Years of Wailin’ The Wailin’ Jennys released their debut album in 2004, titled 40 Days, then went on to gain critically acclaimed success. With a total of five studio albums under their belt, the most recent being 2017’s Fifteen, the trio has racked up a Juno Award (Canadian Grammy), over 5,000 Instagram followers and 52k Facebook likes, all while touring worldwide. Mehta shares more about their latest album, produced through the Red House Records label, sharing that Fifteen was made “to commemorate our 15 years together as a band. It’s our first new album in six years and is a collection of songs by some of our favorite songwriters, including Tom Petty, Dolly Parton, Paul Simon and others.” Sixteen years and several albums later, the ladies of The Wailin’ Jennys have taken their energy and folk-pop sound on a journey all around the world. “We’ve toured a lot of cool places: The Netherlands, Denmark, Australia, all over the U.S.,” Mehta said. The singer was stumped when asked to recall one of her favor-

embraced among each of the ladies.

“It’s hard to pinpoint just one memory,” Mehta said. “We’ve had the fortune of singing with a lot of our heroes … Bruce Cockburn, Bruce Hornsby, Bonnie Raitt. We’ve recorded with a lot of musicians that we love. We’ve played for a lot of excited and receptive audiences. Sometimes being on the road is not the easiest job, but all in all we feel pretty lucky.”

“We all had solo projects [before The Wailin’ Jennys] and still do … we’ve always made a point of trying to honor the fact that one needs balance in life to thrive and grow, so we’ve taken breaks here and there for everyone to do their own thing. Now, we are all mothers so that’s the thing we have to balance more than anything!” —VP

COLOR MY CITY

Illustrations by Madeline Richmond

IDEA BOX

This building has colorful awnings and painted trim. What colors will you use? What’s on the sidewalk in front of the coffee shop on the left side of this picture? Draw in the words “GALLERIA ON NORTH GROVE” above the awnings on the right side. Bernard Hagelow built this building in 1885 to hold his whole beer bottling business but his business partner Moritz Klinger was the first to run a business here. It was known as the “Klinger Saloon” until Elgin Township banned alcoholic beverages in 1914. After the repeal of Prohibition, it became a tavern again! The building was restored in the 1990’s and is now home to several small businesses. As for beverages, you can only find coffee! Go to: www.historicelgin.com

Ruth Bader Ginsburg has served for more than two decades on the Supreme Court as the second woman to ever be named to the highest bench. A small and quiet woman, Ginsburg has defied stereotypes to become a pop cultural icon for the progressive left. Interviews with many admirers, and a few detractors, highlight Ginsburg’s incredible life. Ginsburg may be diminutive, but she made a name for herself with a novel strategy to fight sex discrimination. Her career has seen dramatic changes in the way society views sex discrimination and gender roles. From This River Town

In Control? June, moon, spoon, rune . . . Rune? Here’s a rune: Step on a crack / break your mother’s back. Here’s another: Touch your nose / touch your toes / never go in one of those. That one is said when an ambulance passes by. You can also cross your fingers after saying it. Fun and games? Jump rope rhymes? Nope, more than that. Runes rely on spookiness, on the hope that one can control present and future events, be they big or small. They can be charms and they exist in the realm of MAGIC. Oh, ho, there’s a topic to widen the eyes. Knock on wood, throw salt over your shoulder, refuse to put certain thoughts into words for FEAR THEY WILL COME TRUE ... all attempts at casting a spell, at controlling the unknowable. Do we whistle in a graveyard at night or do we not? Do we even visit graveyards at night? Spooky. Funny thing about that word, spooky. It has the “oo” sound right in the middle of it. What about that? It is not onomatopoeia like “zap” or “zingo” that’s for sure but it DOES have that “oo” sound. Hmmm ... Spoooooky. When we were nine, this would have been in the early fifties, my friend, Steph, and I went on an adventure. At dusk, we crossed the dirt road in front of my family’s farmhouse (circa 1700), crept through a half acre of blueberry bushes and entered the back yard of the Victorian

by Mary Ellen Goodwill

home down the road in which two people resided, an elderly brother and sister. They kept to themselves and really were of no interest to us, the adventurers; it was the house which held potential. Surely such a place of gables and turrets and porches and darkened windows would present us with enough of a fright to satisfy our need to be spooked. I repeat, “need to be spooked.” For little girls that included a need to jump and squeal and hug each other in mock fear and trembling. Just something fun, that’s all. The house provided absolutely nothing. Not a groan, not a creek, not a rumble. “Bum luck,” we said, more than once because we had recently heard the phrase and we wanted to sound tough. No spooks. Disheartened, we returned home to probably cut out pictures of our heartthrobs from the movie magazines. Maybe if I taped enough pictures of Ricky Nelson to the wall beside my bed, he would, across the many miles from Massachusetts to California, hear my heart’s calls. I would charm him for sure. Well, I could put it in the air anyway. No harm in that. As a younger kid, one day I so wanted a candy bar that I cut out a picture of a Hershey’s, wished long and hard that it would become real and took a bite. What an inky disappointment that was. In seeking excitement, Steph and I had ventured toward the unknowable, possibly the unapproachable. Proudly, defiantly,

determinedly we had made our way through that blueberry patch at night on a search for spookiness. Ah, bum luck. But here’s a good one from only twenty years back: my young cat, Vinda, disappeared. We called, we searched, we phoned neighbors, all the usual attempts at finding a lost cat. After three weeks, I remained sad at the loss as I walked around the neighborhood with my buddy, Cynthia. Chat, chat, blah, blah went our usual friendly banter until something, and I mean SOMETHING made me turn and look toward a neighbor’s garage. No reason to look there. We were just strolling but the sensation was as if I were being called to. Well then, to go on and necessarily conclude, one week later a dean’s assistant entered my mobile classroom, told me I had a phone call and offered to watch the study hall for me. On the phone was Cyn. Her neighbor had returned from a vacation and found Vinda, all bones and fleas but alive, in her garage. Yes, THAT garage. What made me notice the call? How could I have heard it? And why did I disregard it? Here I insert the term at hand: spookiness. You can search for it, you can wish for it, you can experience it, but you can’t control it. —MEG Miss Goodwill’s novels can be found at Gail Borden and ECC libraries, Town House Books in St. Charles and on Amazon.

I remember the day I saw my first one. It was a perfect autumn day, and as I walked along the isolated trail, there it was: my first “roadside” memorial. At first, it appeared to be an apparition. In the middle of a grouping of wild bushes and tall grasses, there arose a spectral white cross, complete with an angel statue peering at it from above. After my initial shock, I went in for a closer inspection. At the base of the hand-made wooden cross were curios and plastic flowers, a stuffed teddy bear or two, and heartfelt, handwritten notes speaking of sorrow, love or wishes for a heavenly afterlife. The solemn scene charged the atmosphere with a sense of the fragility and transient nature of life as we know it. The name and date written on the cross gave me a glimpse of tragedy, mystery, and a strange feeling of intimacy. I didn’t know of the accident, nor did I know the boy. However, I surmised from his name that he was Lithuanian and just 17 years old, a teen not yet a man. I couldn’t help but wander back in time to my own late teen years. I was deeply in love and starting to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Was this boy in love, too, as deeply and romantically as only a teenager can be? Did he have dreams of his ideal career or a throbbing for adventure

in his heart? Such questions can never be answered, but the memorial lingers. In Elgin, there are two roadside memorials within a mile or so of each other. One male, the other female. Each elicits a sense of mystery and gives pause to the typical rhythm of our lives. What happened? In the case of Stephanie, newspaper reports answer the question. The Daily Herald and The Courier News tell a tragic tale of a drunk driving accident. In this instance, poor Stephanie was the passenger who became the victim. The purple cross along Route 31 stands as a tribute and warning to all who pass by and notice it. The other memorial sits along the sidewalk on Kimball, just west of Spring Street. Another mystery. From what I can tell, Luis was a guy who loved skateboarding, for a skateboard is a prominent part of the display.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that roadside memorials affect people in opposite ways. Some find comfort in the public tribute to a loved one while others prefer to keep their grief a private affair. In The Courier’s Speak Out section (10-11-2012), there are two negative opinions regarding roadside memorials. One person questions the safety of such tributes, claiming they can be a distraction to drivers and cause another accident. Another’s opinion calls for the City to create a law against these sites. Other towns in our area grapple with these issues. Public officials are reluctant to create ordinances related to homemade memorials because they sympathize with the mourners, yet some residents complain that the memorials become eyesores

after a while. In 2012, Mount Prospect put a 90 day limit on public displays; however, officials loosely enforce this law. They don’t want to minimize the grief of the deceased’s loved ones. While some citizens see what they perceive as an alarming proliferation of shrines, roadside memorials are nothing new. Western civilization’s implementation of roadside tributes traces back to ancient Greece. In those days, it was simply more practical to bury the victim and mark the site where the incident took place. There were no cars, many men died in battles in far flung places, and there were no good ways to preserve and carry the body back to its village. Author B.A. Robinson, writing for Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance, reminds us that such markers in the U.S. have their roots in Roman Catholicism practices in the Southwest,

umbrage with crosses littering public highways. Clearly, the roadside memorial is not without its critics.

drawing on customs from Spain and Mexico. Then there are the countless western movies that feature solemn trailside burials, topped by crosses made of found material. Even the bad guys get the same treatment. American pioneers, too, laid the dead to rest trailside, probably for the same reasons as the Greeks. Life on the prairie was miserable and

space in the Conestoga wagons was scarce. Who would want a corpse on board? In our time, spouses and children of the deceased draw comfort from the visual reminder of a loved one’s life, keeping memory alive. For others, it’s just a painful reminder of a life cut too short. Consider, too, the point of atheists who take

Call for Art: Serial Tiles Printing a large piece of art as a combination of smaller sheets is called “tiling.” BRAVO Magazine is seeking a piece of two dimensional visual art to feature in a series of 12 monthly issues beginning in January, 2019. Each month, we’ll print a 1/12 section of the art (a “tile”) as a single page in BRAVO. Readers will be encouraged to cut out and save each tile during the year. When the series is completed, the twelve sections can be assembled together to form a finished piece 40 x 33 inches in size. We are looking for original artwork in traditional or digital media, created at any size or orientation, so long as the proportions are 11:9. Light, bright saturated colors reproduce best on our paper. Elgin-related subject matter is preferred, with a composition that does not anticipate the tiling process. All proposals will be considered.

The state of Illinois offers memorial signage as a permanent marker of the deceased. Called the “fatal accident memorial marker,” the sign has a blue background with white text that reads: ‘Reckless Driving Costs Lives’ (605 ILCS 125/23.1).For a fee, the State will provide the sign and two years’ maintenance. A personalized, separate sign is also available for purchase and display. Of course, this being a government entity, there are exceptions, rules, addendums, et al. The appeal of a home-grown memorial begins to make sense, considering the knotty mess of governmental bureaucracy and its ultimate control. Roadside memorials, being public tributes, are fraught with controversy. Due to their personal nature, the mementos left at the shrines can spark negative reactions and even anger. Consider the case of a grieving family that was outraged to find a case of beer placed among the legitimate tokens of love for the accident victim. Someone, most likely a friend of the drunk driver, thought it would be funny (?), ironic (?), or out of sheer stupidity, decided to piggyback his tribute to the perpetrator onto the victim’s marker. Thus is the risk taken when shrines are put on public display; there is no guarantee of respect toward the victims. Back and forth the comments fly. Readers of the Courier-News express varying opinions, from the critical (“gaudy”), apathetic (“just keep driving”) to helpful reminder (“slow down, pay attention, and drive safely”).

In one case, a memorial was installed on the private property of a medical office. The property owner, a doctor, removed it for fear it would send a negative message to potential patients. What person seeking health treatment would want to face a grim reminder of death while she was entering her doctor’s office? Initially there was a dust up over it, but common sense prevailed. The mourners were upset at its removal, but both parties agreed to forgive and forget the incident. It’s understandable how these encounters become emotionally charged. After all, who among us doesn’t wonder at the mysterious ways of fate and the final outcome we all face? Death among our familiars is a different matter than encountering the death of a stranger. The site of a roadside cross may shock us or induce us into a state of somber reflection. In other words, it’s a buzz kill. Who wants that? Unfortunately, it’s reality, which is filled with surprising and often unpleasant occurrences. Since I discovered my first “roadside” memorial, I’ve gone back to it a dozen times or more. Each time there is something new—a plant, a stone pathway, more flowers. It remains a living legacy to the young man whose life ended too soon. The memorial continues to grow and change as he would have on his life journey, had he survived. Roadside memorials have the power to turn tragedy into a thing of transcendence. As we pass down the road, both literally and figuratively, we are reminded that our paths will eventually converge on the unseen path beyond. — DT
