Growing up I would look forward to this time of year when my extended family would gather around my grandmother’s extended kitchen table. Those days were full of turkey, sweet corn, Stove Top stuffing, cranberry sauce, and my grandmother’s custard pies. After dinner there would be board games of one variety or another. I remember even at a young age enjoying my uncle’s fierce competitiveness and sharp wit. There must have been tension among the adults at least at times. Looking back now I know there were years when marriages were breaking down and some owed others money. But if it was palpable to me as a child, that sourness is blotted out by the sweet taste of my grandmother’s cooking and the savoriness of card game victories.

Today, gathered around tables with friends, family, or neighbors, I am aware of the brewing conflicts that threaten to cut our time together short or bar us

from ever getting together again. We all have our own recipes for surviving, avoiding, or plowing steadfastly into these conflicts. Whether you’ve become a dynamo distractor, a washroom wailer, a burn-all-the-bridges bellower, or another alliterative collection of adjectives, somehow you too have found a way to survive enough holidays to be reading this page. I know of friends who have cancelled their traditional family gatherings altogether, rather than gather with folks with whom they know they disagree, and I think choosing to maintain our space can be an important survival mechanism when we need it. Particularly when patterns of abuse are at play or when we feel like we are reacting from a place of trauma or anger, I think it is healthy to forego the yearly clash with relatives to restore our own health and sanity. It can also send a strong message to our relatives about what we will and will not tolerate.

I know of others who hold their gatherings as usual but add a strong injunction against talking religion or politics, and I think agreeing to maintain silence around our differences in order to be with each other can help us see each other as human beings again. We may not agree on whether or not NFL players should kneel during the national anthem but we might agree that few things say Thanksgiving to us as well as sliced cranberry sauce from a can (or not). After all, I believe it’s when we lose sight of each other’s humanity that we do each other real harm. There is however, another, admittedly more difficult, option. We can gather with people with whom we disagree and agree to have deep meaningful conversation. With the right ingredients, I do believe this can happen even without the help of a trained mediator, a talking stick, and three U.N. peace-keeping ambassadors.

I think a lot of us already know how to do this. We know that genuine listening to others, speaking for ourselves, and seeing everyone as valuable and wise in their own way leads us to health — and Thanksgiving gatherings that make it to the dessert stage. What’s hardest I think is to take responsibility for our own feelings. We cannot be in charge of another person’s feelings no matter how hard we try and no matter how responsible we feel. There are an overwhelming number of myths about failed love potions that express our human yearning for that particular power. In the same way, we are in charge of our own emotions. We can have influence with each other. The questions we ask each other, the stories we share, and even the shouting matches we may choose to engage in can have influence. However, each of us reserves the possibility of managing our own emotions separate from the words or actions of anyone else.

Our mission is to put a spotlight on Dundee businesses, offering fine and casual dining, unique shopping opportunities and personable professional services, to all nearby communities as well as our own villages.

responded in a calm tone, as though she needed to say it twelve times daily, “Just because he says it doesn’t make it true.” I don’t know about you but I can be pretty terrible at taking things personally. There are days when I’m pretty sure that SUV that passes too close to me on my bike is trying hard to murder me (Death Race 2000-style), rather than someone just like me, making mistakes in a rush to get to work. What if it’s not all about me? I should have that question posted

Dealing with our own emotions though can be even more intimidating than the thought of sitting across from our least favorite aunt for an hour’s long holiday meal. Our minds and bodies even have ways of keeping emotions we are not ready to process buried and inaccessible, at least for awhile, particularly when it comes to trauma responses. Yet, I believe it’s dealing with those emotions that can

Just because my cousin voted for the other candidate doesn’t make either of us an inhuman monster. We all have our own reasons for doing everything. We all have our own wisdom to share. We are all wrong more often than we would like to admit. I find a lot of truth in that old adage that the thing we can’t

help us connect more fully with each other. I was walking through a grocery store once when I heard some children squabbling with each other in a pretty average way. One announced to his mother (along with everyone in the aisle), “Mom, he called me a name!” The mother responded in a way that caught me short. She

Blood at the Root Elgin Community College Theatre’s production of Blood at the Root, a play inspired by the Jena Six court case and written by Dominique Morisseau, will be held Friday, Nov. 2 through Sunday, Nov. 11. The production is directed by Susan A. Robinson, ECC Theatre instructor and program coordinator. Blood at the Root is a powerful and electrically poetic play that explores the escalating racial tensions at a divided Louisiana high school. The play follows a group of high school students as they are faced with the very personal and immediate ramifications of racial double standards, prejudice and criminal injustice. The story is inspired by a series of real-life incidents, media reporting and social action that took place in Jena, Louisiana in 2006 and 2007 when six Afri-

can American students from Jena High School were initially charged with attempted murder for a school fight after being provoked with nooses hanging from a tree on campus. The six students became known as the “Jena Six.” Performances will be held at the ECC Arts Center located in Building H on the Spartan Drive Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 3 p.m. on Sundays. For complete show times and tickets, go to tickets.elgin.edu.

Elgin Master Chorale Elgin Master Chorale’s 201819 Season opens with one of Schubert’s lesser-known but beautiful works — his Mass in A flat. Schubert commenced composing this Mass in November of 1819, and two hundred years later, almost to the day, the Elgin Master Chorale will bring it to their stage and prove this piece’s overwhelming staying power through the centuries. Joined by the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and the EMC Children’s Chorus, this is a highlight of the fall concert season. Don’t miss your only chance to hear this, Sunday, November 11th at 3:30pm in the Blizzard Theatre at the ECC Arts Center. Tickets are $24/$19, available at tickets. elgin.edu, (847) 622-0300 or at the box office.

The Jewish Theatre of Elgin is producing their first play, Rosenstrasse by Terry Lawrence, which opens on Nov 3rd at Congregation Kneseth Israel. Rosenstrasse, which translates to Rose Street, is based on the true story of the Rosenstrasse protests in Berlin, Germany in 1943. The protest began on Feburary 27th when Jewish men married to non Jewish women were arrested from factories, detained and prepared to be shipped off to Auschwitz. Around 1700 men were arrested and taken to a holding facility on Rosenstrasse. Their wives started coming to Rosenstrasse to try to get their husbands back. Each day more and more women arrived. They began to unite. It is an uplifting, inspiring, and even

Elgin Cultural Arts Commission

De-Mystifying the Kwanzaa Holiday by Tish Powell, Elgin City Councilwoman & Liasion to the the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission One of my first deep dives into Kwanzaa was when a childhood friend decided to have an African-themed wedding. I was given the role of the Storyteller -- which included reciting each of the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa during the ceremony. Learning how to pronounce all of the principles, especially “Kujichagulia”, was an accomplishment in itself, and one that renewed my curiosity about the Kwanzaa holiday.

History Kwanzaa is an African-American and pan-African holiday dedicated to the celebration of family, community and culture. Created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of Africana Studies, Kwanzaa is a seven day cultural festival that begins December 26th and ends January 1st. Kwanzaa is a unique blend of values and practices of African and African-American culture. During the holiday, families and communities organize activities around the Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principles): Umoja (Unity) Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) Ujima (Collective Work & Responsibility) Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) Nia (Purpose) Kuumba (Creativity) Imani (Faith)

In additional to local artists and community groups, the event will feature Chicago-based storytellers Kucha & Baba Tony, who have performed at several local schools and Elgin’s International Festival (IFest). Kucha and Baba Tony will lead the audience thru an interactive celebration of Kwanzaa, including storytelling, music and the symbolic lighting of the candles. Kucha, whose name means “dawning” or “first light” in Ki-Swahili, believes that celebrating Kwanzaa is especially important for African-American children. “Kwanzaa speaks directly to our roots — our children. Our children are exposed to so many negative things in our society today. Kwanzaa reinforces positive principles to live by in hopes of guiding our youth, making them stronger, more responsible members of society. It is a way to start the New Year off right, by encouraging our children to not only survive, but to excel.” For more information, visit the City of Elgin’s website at www.cityofelgin.org or check out the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission’s Facebook page.

A member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1994, he has sold over five million albums and has earned a rightful place in the Top 10 with at least a half-dozen of his songs, including “Small Town Saturday Night” and “Hearts Are Gonna Roll”, according to the biography on Ketchum’s official website.

❝ I’m not much, but I’m all I think about.

“Alan Reynolds is a great hero of mine. He wrote songs for Big Fish ... just all the above. This guy is just a mentor to me and he’s just an inspiration. Terrific guy,” Ketchum said, very fondly of his good friend. With his admiration, passion, and soul, Ketchum went on to log several years worth of music making with Curb Records.

Ketchum, born and raised in Gruene, TX, always had a passion for the art of music — so much so, that he couldn’t pinpoint a specific time in his life when the passion was truly born. “It was really my passion. I had one foot in the boat and one foot in the water,” Ketchum said. “So, I just kind of committed myself to it. It was a fairly logical agreement that I had made with myself.” Ketchum signed with Curb Records, a Nashville, TN record

A Key Change

Although a passion for music always reigned, Ketchum needed stability after some time. A change of pace from his life in Nashville seemed imperative. His hometown in Texas called his heart for music back to where it was first nurtured. “I have Multiple Sclerosis, so I was paralyzed from the neck down,” Ketchum said. “[Moving back to Texas] was the decision that I made ... you just gotta keep moving. Keep-a-goin’, as my mom would say.” With a diagnosis like MS,

trying times would seem almost inevitable. Ketchum, however, answers confidently when asked if his Multiple Sclerosis affected his music.

On Saturday, November 17 at 7 p.m., the Arts Center at ECC will experience the musical stylings of Ketchum and guitarist Kenny Grimes. What can the audience expect?

“No, it hasn’t ... it hasn’t really affected me at all. My dad used to say, ‘you can’t kill a dumbass.’ So, [moving home] was pretty much a decision that I made, it just came to me,” Ketchum said.

“We kinda wing it,” Ketchum said while talking about his upcoming performance. “Kenny Grimes is a great guitar player and wonderful friend; we just kinda get through it ... that’s all we can do. It kinda is ... up close and personal.”

While away from Nashville, where most of his music career flourished, inspiration to continue feeding his passion for music seemed to come from a very familiar who in his life, not necessarily a what. “Alan Reynolds is a great mentor, is a terrific man and role model. He really inspired me,” Ketchum said. “[A reason why] I signed with Curb Records [was] because Alan Reynolds was a hero of mine and an inspiration as well.”

Second Ending Five years and 11 albums already in his discography, a new album is born. I’m The Troubador, Ketchum’s 12th album “is the sound of an artist finding his own redemption in the strum of an acoustic guitar, the boom of a kick drum, and the trill of an upright piano,” according to Ketchum’s official website. “It means a great deal to me,” Ketchum said. “I cut a live album with Bryan Sutton and these great piano players and great guys, just terrific guys. So, it really has been an inspiration, absolutely.” Ketchum’s sound is a familiar favorite, and his 2014 album, I’m The Troubador, is no different. Although this time, the country rule book is thrown away and

Legendary songwriter Hal Ketchum performs at the ECC Arts Center Saturday, November 17th replaced by incorporating sounds of folk, blues, and soul. “I think it’s Americana. It truly is, by definition,” Ketchum said. Americana can be defined, according to The Americana Music Association, as “contemporary music that incorporates elements of various American roots music styles, including country, roots-rock, folk, bluegrass, R&B and blues, resulting in a distinctive roots-oriented sound that lives in a world apart from the pure forms of the genres upon which it may draw.” With twelve albums under his belt, the different seasons of Ketchum’s life make for musical memories marked by the songs in his catalog. This album, however, is truly just the simplistic, yet unforgettable fashion of Americana sound.

“I kinda get by,” Ketchum said. “I write my own songs and basically I get away with anything I can.”

Tickets for ECC Arts Center’s performance by Hal Ketchum are $44. Tickets for all performances at the ECC Arts Center are available online at tickets. elgin.edu or at the ECC Arts Center box office. Box office hours are noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and noon to 5 p.m on Saturday. To purchase tickets by phone, call 847-6220300.

In regards to his career, Ketchum simply says, “I’m not much, but I’m all I think about.”

He also will tell how the men of northern Kane County’s National Guard Company E set aside a bottle of whisky to be drunk by the last member of the company left alive. Over his 30-year career, he’s penned 15 top-10 singles including “Small Town Saturday Night” and “Hearts Are Gonna Roll.” A member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1994, circumstances shifted for Ketchum in 2009. From the Editor: The State of the Magazine

Making BRAVO Great Again As the end of another calendar year approaches, we find ourselves reassessing our practices, pricing and goals for the coming new year.

Practices Our dedication to creating a “sense of place” for Elgin and its nearby villages remains strong. And we still believe it’s possible to produce good quality print media that’s free for readers. (But one issue per month is all we can handle.) Those things aren’t changing. We never thought articles would be such a big part of the magazine, and never considered publishing creative writing until people offered to share their talents. That’s been successful and satisfying for a lot of people. We will do more. Visual art is also a fairly new direction we plan to explore in ways no other local magazine would dare to do. The events calendar is an extremely important part of BRAVO — our original concept, in fact — but it’s exhausting to produce. We’d like more data feeds (or data entry!) from the event planners out there.

Pricing

another period of growth in page counts, circulation, creativity and quality. Ad revenue was just enough for us to try out an informal sponsorship program that offered reduced ad costs for certain charities and nonprofits. We found we could afford to give this support back to the community and not lose money. That year we reported a few hundred dollars in gross profit, thanks to thousands of hours of unpaid volunteer help.

end product (even though it’s free!) improves the image of our writers, artists, and advertisers in the eyes of our readers and that’s good for business. It’s good for Elgin and its neighbors, too. Here are some numbers we’re looking at for next year.

Our rate of growth has exceeded the percentage price increase we introduced in 2018. We find we can document in fancy marketing-speak how BRAVO advertising value remains competitive with other media, and costs far less than other print media. And our 2018 April Fool’s Day stunt proved to us that shutting down the magazine was not an option.

We still have no paid staff, no insurance, no cash reserves, and no credit, and are not seeking any. Thanks for understanding.

EIGHTH PAGE ADS

QUARTER PAGE ADS

For 2019, we’re keeping costs low for our smaller size ads, and asking a little more for the larger sizes. The half page was priced too low from the beginning, and that will be corrected. • 2019 Eighth Page: $59 • 2019 Quarter Page: $99 • 2019 Half Page: $149 • 2019 Full Page: $249 • 2019 Back Cover: $299 But along with price increases come more new opportunities than ever to offset those increases with some creative new programs like response-based pricing, sponsorships, and membership discounts. Our advertisers will learn more about these in November.

Starting out as an experiment in the summer of 2015, we set our ad prices low to encourage advertisers to give us a chance. They did, and we kept those prices through all of 2016 in order to build up our customer base and readership. It was a successful launch, but our prices were set too low to sustain us.

Goals

We raised prices a little for the first time in 2017 at the suggestion of readers, and that led to

Our big goal for 2019 is to increase paper quality and page count, because a better

• Print quality: +8.2% • Circulation: +12.5% • “Giving back” sponsorship: +15% • Creative content: +20% • Average ad price: +14.7%

In a month that’s noted for expressions of gratitude, we wish to thank all the writers, artists, contributors and helpers of all kinds for making this project a joy to keep working on. Coloring book art, spurious ads, fake dollers, and articles like “Trash Can Pokémon” (see page 43) ensure that we don’t take ourselves too seriously. But we take accountability to our advertisers very seriously. And all of us owe a huge debt of gratitude to the advertisers whose real dollars make this magazine possible. And because our advertisers take their customers seriously, we thank you, the readers, for supporting the businesses, arts groups, municipalities, churches and nonprofits who reach you through these pages. Readership is still what keeps local print media viable, the same way it has for hundreds of years. Happy Thanksgiving! —JP

MARQUEE MEDIA is raising advertising rates 7-25% in 2019. BRAVO advertising will cost as follows: formerly $55

will cost $59 formerly $89

will cost $99 HALF PAGE ADS formerly $119

Dickens in Dundee Dickens in Dundee was formed in 1988. It began as a small community gathering, with caroling and the search for Tiny Tim’s crutch in local stores. With the support of local businesses, this event has grown significantly and attracts people from all over the Dundee area. This year’s 31st annual Dickens in Dundee will take place in East Dundee on Friday, November 30th, with a parade to follow on Saturday, December 1st. The weekend kicks off each year on the first Friday in December, with tree lighting ceremonies in both East and West Dundee. Residents and visitors stroll through downtown East and West Dundee to see local merchant’s windows “come alive” during Living Windows. Saturday begins with the cornerstone event: the Spirit of Christmas Parade. The parade begins at Second Street in West Dundee and travels across the Main Street Bridge into East Dundee, ending near the Dundee Township Visitors Center (The Depot) on River Street. Other popular events include Gingerbread House Making, Festival of Trees, Santa’s Petting Zoo and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus himself! Stay tuned for more details as the event approaches! 6p-10p, The Depot, River Street, East Dundee www.dickensindundee.org Annual Wine Tasting Come join us for the Annual Red Wine tasting event at Porter’s Pub in Elgin. From This River Town

November and Artie and Me by Mary Ellen Goodwill Old friends, old friends, Sat on their park bench like bookends ... — Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, “Old Friends” November has bookends. Candy corn and pumpkin pie. It has memories of old friends. Lying in leaf piles, racing down toboggan hill. It has yellow leaves to tumble and ice to coat and dissemble. Longer nights and deeper darkness in this month with a more distant moon. Stand taller, straighten up for December and winter. “Get your wits about you.” And where are Owen’s mittens? My old friend is “up Maine.” He moves from the shed to the cabin to the edge of the pond. He is alone and he watches the moon. We do not telephone. Bracing. That’s November.

And full of fog. Reach in, up to your elbow, and pull out a poem. Take it for your own. November is sentiment as well. Carefully wash Grandma’s olive dish and dust off the pewter tray. Best to not take November lightly. It is a short month, a tap-on-the-shoulder month, a month of Ichabod Crane frantically rushing through the black winds of our dreams. Corn stalks rattle. Coyotes howl. The moon watches us as we pull on scarves and jackets and give ourselves over to the silver horizon. My old friend sits in a rocker. So do I.

162 S. State Street Elgin, IL 60123

The fully evolved Triboca has a similar strong defense with its Triple Label, but it has the opposite effect on some Trainers, who challenge it with any type of Trash Pokémon attacking any of its three mouths. Another genetic weakness of the higher forms of Bocas is their orientation: the Can-eating move is done with the right side of Biboca, and with the left side of Triboca.

Refuce

Polychute

Another common group of Trash Can Pokémon are the Perfocubes. Their silvery appearance attracts attention from Trainers, but their subtle differences in shape and badging have fated them to be among the weakest in Ecco. More than 75% of all Trash Pokémon will defeat Refuce, which is only equipped to handle Biodegradables.

The most primitive form of Trash Can Pokémon is the Polychute, which is relatively small, and whose abilities are entirely undifferentiated. It is believed that Polychutes were the most common kind in this region before the Ecco Revolution, but only a few still exist today. They are so simple that no amount of training will make them stronger, thus Trainers who own these tend to neglect them.

reeuce

strash piglot

Reeuce The opposite is true of its cousin Reeuce, which can take on most types of Glass, Metal and Plastic Pokémon. Its smaller mouth is a strong defense against Cardboard Pokémon such as Bokses and Kartons.

It is believed that the multi-capable Biboca and Triboca share some evolutionary history with Lobbin and Globbin, who developed a pairing behavior that proved to be advantageous in battles against combinations of Trash Pokémon fielded by a Team. Because of their large mouths, they remain vulnerable to airborne attacks from longer distances away.

An exposed liner is one of the physical traits of these primitive Trash Can Pokémon. Strash is a perfect example. It adapts well to different habitats, and though it is easily defeated, it regains its strength within just a few seconds. Strash is common throughout Ecco, and is moved easily from Gym to Gym.

Piglot The small but successful Piglot thrives mainly because of its location. One strategy is to take a position alongside Strash, where Trainers almost never attack it with Biodegradables. Another strategy is to remain at certain Gyms where almost all of its opponents are the Paper type.

A few of the strongest Piglots will evolve into a Pigot, a simple but highly specialized Pokémon that is invincible against White Paper only. Its power to deter all other types and attacks is legendary; the Pigot is rarely seen.

exocant Exocant

lanfill Lanfile and Lanfill In contrast to the Perfocubes, these Trash Can Pokémon have a unique Camouflage ability, meant to reduce their visibility to passing Trainers. They have two different coloration patterns that occur in separate parts of Ecco, but their common characteristic is the unusual covered mouth, which is the primary defense against all attacks. They live longer than any other kind because they seldom do battle.

In the wilderness that surrounds Ecco are two unusual Pokémon that resist capture. Exocant is the older form of Pebtile whose skin is covered with small stones. Its extreme weight resists capture by itinerant Trainers; its tiny mouth defies attacks from almost anything but Metal, Glass and Plastic Pokémon, which it destroys. When weakened by Biodegradables, it takes weeks to regain its strength.

exocan Exocan

grubbish Grubbish The only non-native species in Ecco is Grubbish, which speaks three languages and wears a badge that’s completely different from any other in Ecco: the image of a rival Trainer sending Trash Pokémon into certain defeat by the Grubbish. It commemorates an earlier time when Trash Can Pokémon were once a strong, proud, elite race.

The more evolved form of Pebtile is the Exocan, which has an Ecco badge embedded in its stone skin. It taunts unsuspecting Trainers with “Recyclables Only” and usually prevails, but when found alone, Exocan endures attacks from any Trash Pokémon in the vicinity; Food Pokémon are especially troublesome.

Technivore In recent generations, new species of Trash Pokémon have emerged, with special powers that are different from any Biodegradable or Recyclable. In response, an Ecco Professor took a Pigot and transformed it into a Technivore. Unlike anything seen before, this Pokémon is ignored by every conventional Trash species. It’s three mouths

Grumpster The top of the Trash Can Pokémon hierarchy in Ecco is dominated by a class of enormous, powerful and highly specialized species with intense regenerative strength. The Grumpster is a Paper-fighting machine. Nothing else can get near its long narrow mouth, and it can withstand a week-long onslaught of Paper attacks before showing any sign of fatigue.

Clumpster Even more sophisticated and unbeatable is the Clumpster, whose labeling is a type of psychological combat that augments its fighting capacity. Its tiny mouth is impervious to anything except Metal, Glass and Plastic which are no match for its multiple abilities. These Trash Can Pokémon are so advanced, they acquire individual traits like bright red coloration, or lips like flower petals. Elders speak of a time before the Ecco Revolution, when overpopulation of wild Trash Pokémon became a nuisance. One of the goals of the Revolution was to reduce that population and manage it, and a new generation of Scientists and Trainers raised the Trash Can Pokémon to restore balance in Ecco. This work is not complete as long as Trash Pokémon are deployed irresponsibly or released back into the wild. Ecco needs a perpetual supply of talented Trainers raising highly capable Trash Can Pokémon with ever more effective badges, labels and body types. Gotta catch it all!

FALL 2018 EVENTS CENTERSTAGE HAL KETCHUM

Saturday, November 17 at 7 p.m.

With a sound that is part Vince Gill and part Van Morrison, Hal Ketchum possesses one of the purest voices in American music. He’s penned 15 top-10 singles including “Small Town Saturday Night” and “Hearts Are Gonna Roll.” A member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1994, circumstances shifted for Ketchum in 2009. Exhausted and battling multiple sclerosis, he headed home to Texas. He couldn’t stop songwriting and the resulting music—a rallying cry that rejuvenated Ketchum both artistically and spiritually—ditches the country rulebook by incorporating folk, blues and soul.
