On the Cover:  Starfall Artist:  First Star Art by jrr First Star Art™ Artists are jammer and jrr (online artists’ pen-names) located in Elgin, Illinois (for 16 years). They have lived and worked in USA, Canada, Zaire, England, Mexico, Germany, and Bahrain, Afghanistan; and have traveled to the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, the Bahamas, Guatemala, Nepal, China, and Tibet. The company name First Star Art™ is inspired by an unplanned painting depicting the first star at dusk: ‘Star light, star bright, the first star I see tonight; I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight.’

In theory, a band doesn’t need a stage. An actor doesn’t need a spotlight. A comedian doesn’t need a microphone. But for most performing artists, those things help, and we estimate there is enough capacity in Elgin to produce nearly forty simultaneous performances for more than 5,000 people. And that still does not include the tremendous variety of multi-purpose and improvised spaces we have here.

Kimball Street Theatre at Elgin Academy.

Rooms With Class Among its many historic buildings, Elgin no longer has a landmark theater. But there is a theater in a landmark building on the historic campus of Elgin Academy. Built in 1924, the Laura Davidson Sears Academy of Fine Arts was home to the school’s performing arts programs until the completion of the Rider Center in 2008. Inside, there is 200-seat hall with a raised stage, lighting rigs, control booth, and production space. A substantial collection of visual art hangs on its flat

black walls, and even more is displayed in the adjacent Washington Room. At its peak, this building was a hub of Elgin culture, and there is talk of returning the performance hall to its former glory. Better known to audiences is the sleek, 200-seat Kimball Street Theatre, a versatile “black box” space where the Academy stages its own productions, and rents it to outside groups like the Elgin Theatre Company. Another Elgin black box venue

“Our wish is to immerse ourselves in art, to share some beauty, to inspire and be inspired. Our wish is coming true. Our fine art has become an expression of our extraordinary adventures in the world, and of those to come—first in our dreams, then hopefully into reality.” First Star Art™ artworks are in private collections internationally; featured in magazines and events posters; used for community events and statewide conferences; are studied in educational programs; used as children’s book illustrations; and have been awarded several contest awards, including locally, West Chicago’s People’s Choice Award 2014, and Elgin’s Art For All Annual Juried Exhibit 2014. Blizzard Theatre at Elgin Community College. occupies space in the Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC) of Elgin Community College (ECC). Called SecondSpace Theatre, it hosts a variety of smaller acts for audiences of up to 164 patrons. The premier space at ECC, of course, is the Blizzard Theatre, Elgin’s second largest auditorium with a capacity of 662. Characteristically modest in decor, as public buildings tend to be, it nonetheless has excellent acoustic design, and has witnessed spectacular musical performances by resident ensembles like the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Elgin Master Chorale, plus a host of superb nationally touring acts that grace its stage. Before the VPAC was finished in 1993, the Spartan Auditorium could handle performances for up to 250 guests on a raised, triangular stage. Now it’s just right for recitals by the EYSO’s faculty artists and Chamber Music Institute.

Excellent acoustics in a small package can be found in the Thompson Center at Judson University. The Marjorie Thulin Performance Hall seats 135 guests in front of a 500 sq. ft. stage with state-of-the-art technology. Frequent student recitals are open to the public, and groups like Chamber Music on the Fox have performed here. Across the campus, Judson’s Herrick Chapel was built for larger assemblies, but not necessarily for concerts. Its large stage is used for chapel services, conferences and music, but electric guitars and vocals fare better through the Herrick sound system than the unamplified tones of the Judson Civic Orchestra.

Rooms for Improv-ment No complaints are heard when the Elgin Symphony Orchestra plays the Hemmens Cultural Center’s 1200-seat auditorium. To take nothing away from their incredible talent, music sounds great in this hall, which is professionally run by a permanent staff, and offers dressing rooms, green room, rehearsal space, and a large exhibit floor with a commercial kitchen.

The Hemmens, Elgin’s largest indoor performance space, is cityowned, and with that comes the usual public scrutiny of its cost, condiThulin Performance Hall in the Thompson tion, use and importance Center of Judson University. to the community. Im-

provement plans rise and fall in priority from year to year, but this facility has tremendous potential just as it is for the right creative promoter. Those creative forces are active in Elgin today, perhaps on a smaller scale. Groups like the Independent Players opt for the flexible and affordable space at the Elgin Art Showcase (EAS), a City-run venue atop the eight story Professional Building on Division Street. Its bright, airy, beautiful daylit space becomes an intimate setting for plays surrounded by black drapes and colored lights. It’s a lovely place for a recital, but large ensembles sound better in rooms with different shape and surface texture. The EAS wasn’t originally built to be a performance space, and neither was the Side Street Studio Arts (SSSA) Theatre at 15 1/2 Ziegler Court. This quirky second floor space, with its wall niches, diagonal facade, and supporting columns has seen a wider variety

featured every weekend. A steady variety of classic rock, blues, country and pop groups play in a corner at D Hangout Bar & Grill and Smitty’s Olde Towne Inn. A multi-band punk rock lineup fills the Dutch Inn West about once per month, and an occasional jazz combo or acoustic act will entertain at Martini Room, Chooch’s Pizza, the Walnut Speakeasy or Dundee’s Village Squire.

But the best live performance scene in Elgin may be at Danny’s on Douglas, where an elevated stage, full bar and complete restaurant menu bring in people with an appetite for anything. Fridays and Saturdays feature bands from the suburban circuit, and Tuesday night is a well-produced Open Mic event. For any local performer (not just musi-

Rooms to Go And yet for many Elginites, the performances we care about most are the ones happening in school auditoriums, banquet halls and church sanctuaries. Our area high schools have some excellent modern theater facilities, complete with lighting, sound systems, and fully rigged curtains and sets. For musicians, there are some instruments available for use and if you’re lucky, even a band to back you up. Access to the stage is more difficult at the Grand Victoria

Casino, because top notch regional acts play above and behind the bar. Whether or not you’re a gambler, this exciting venue books some excellent talent, and like practically every other bar and restaurant with live music in Elgin, there is no cover charge. You also shouldn’t hesitate to attend a concert in the superb acoustics of the First Congregational Church or St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Recognizing their structure for the asset that it is, First United Methodist Church (FUMC) actively invites proposals for the use of their stunning

You can see FUMC for yourself at an August 5th concert by Bassel and the Supernaturals. Hundreds of artists will perform somewhere without a stage this summer. It won’t be in a theater or an auditorium. It might be a wedding reception at a hotel, a quinceañera at a salón de fiesta, or a back yard bar mitzvah. It might be dancing or jamming on street corner. Summer Musical Comes Into Beeing Elgin Summer Theatre (EST) brings the Tony-Award winning The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee to The Hemmens Cultural Center on July 14 - 16 and July 21 - 23, 2017. The play, which enjoyed rave reviews both on and Off-Broadway, follows a group of eccentric adolescents in their quest for 1st prize in the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of words, hoping to never hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Featuring songs such as “My Favorite Moment of the Bee,” “Woe is Me,” and “I Speak Six Languages,” audiences are in for a treat with this fun, fast-paced show.

Festival (ESFF) is currently accepting film submissions. The films, no more than 20 minutes in length, are rated PG, making this a great family event. The screenings include a showing of the finalists. Winners will be selected by an ESFF judging panel and audience members. In addition, there will be a People’s Choice award based solely on audience votes. All films are due by August 25th. To submit your film, please visit www.Hemmens.org.

Elgin Theatre Company: The Odd Couple Set in 1960’s in an apartment on Riverside Drive in New York City, this classic comedy opens as a group of the guys assemble for cards in the apartment of divorced Oscar Madison. And if the mess is any indication, it’s no wonder that his wife left him. Late to arrive is Felix Unger, who has just been separated from his wife. Fastidious, depressed, and none too tense, Felix seems suicidal, but as the action unfolds, Oscar becomes the one with murder on his mind when the clean freak and the slob ultimately decide to room together with hilarious results as The Odd Couple is born. Brown Bag Lunch Classic Films - Swiss Miss (1938, NR) Laurel and Hardy are mousetrap salesmen hoping to get rich in Switzerland. However, they lose all of their money by a cheese maker. While working off their debt, Hardy becomes utterly besotted with a chambermaid, Anna, who is in fact a famous opera singer spying on her composer husband Victor while he works on his new opera. The boys are assigned to move Victor’s piano to a secluded tree house. In a spectacularly comic scene, the pair struggle to deliver a piano across a suspension bridge in the mountains when they encounter a gorilla! Director: John G. Blystone, Hal Roach. Adellia Green (1901-1982) came to Elgin around 1941 with her husband Arthur and two small children. They lived on Hickory Place in the historic Settlement neighborhood on Elgin’s east side. While Mr. Green traveled from coast to coast as a Pullman porter, Adellia applied herself to the improvement of her neighborhood and influencing its children, a cause she would continue for decades.   Once their youngest started school at Sheridan elementary in 1947, the Greens opened a fried chicken restaurant at the corner of Hickory Place and Dundee Avenue, and cheerfully served blacks and whites their popular recipes during a time of deep segregation in Elgin. She ran the business largely by herself until 1951, when her husband retired from Pullman.   Green’s Fried Chicken was one of the first black businesses to break the color barrier in Elgin’s 4th of July parade, and Adellia was among only a few, if any, other people of color on the staff of the upscale Joseph Spiess department store.   After Green’s Fried Chicken closed in 1957, Adellia was President of the Fremont Recreation Center, which served neighborhood youths through social programming, clubs, and practical skills instruction. Her passion for improving the quality of life in the black community extended to her work with the NAACP, the historically integrated civil rights organization dedicated to ending racism through legal action, political influence, education and other nonviolent means. She took the Elgin Chapter on its only trip ever to the national convention during the 1950’s.   When developers sought to build affordable housing in the Settlement district in 1960, Adellia made front

page news, eloquently addressing an all-white City Council about the need for equal standards for housing, occupancy and rents.   She was called “an oak” in Elgin’s black community for her strength, beauty and character. Her personal work to improve lives demonstrated the power of self-respect, which she passed on to a generation of Elgin children who grew up to become the Black Middle Class in America.

Spirits of Elgin

Spirits of Elgin recognizes the people who left a mark on this place, but whose faces appear only our photographs and memories until now.

It’s a collective art project intended to decorate the community with subtle reminders of people whose presence here made a difference we can still see and feel.

Submit your nominations and photographs of people who have passed through — and passed away — to be considered for a future edition of Spirits of Elgin.

Caution: defacement of public or private property is a crime under Illinois law and the Elgin municipal code. Penalties are worse when a church, school or memorial is involved. Please do not tag anything that does not belong to you without permission.

Step 1: Carefully cut on the dotted line with a hobby knife or scissors. Remove the paper from the middle.

Step 2: Tape the four corners of the stencil to a safe surface. It works best if the stencil is lying down flat. Spray paint through the opening to transfer the design to the surface underneath.

Mini-Media Guide: FEED 411

How to Get Your Events Listed for FREE in The FEED Publishing and promoting all the things to do in Elgin is why we started BRAVO. We are eager to fill our pages with your events, concerts, festivals, lectures, arts happenings and more.

What We Don’t Want Commercial messages, like “$9.99 Friday Fish Fry” belong in your ad, not in the FEED. Since BRAVO is freely distributed to the general public, private events should not be listed.

Repeating Events Some kinds of events repeat regularly, like bird watching or French conversation groups. If these events are open, they are welcome in the FEED.

Basic Event Submission Visit our online event submission page and fill out the form. Fill in all your event details, along with your own contact info in case there are questions.

Automatic Submission Fortunately, we have a means of collecting events from certain kinds of schedules you post on your website or social media. If your website has a built-in calendar feature, there’s a good

chance that your scheduled event data can be accessed over the internet, in a form that’s conducive to publishing in the FEED.

manitarian message through mellow grooves of sound as he translates his grief into soul, funk, and activism. Bassel’s heartfelt music connects neighbors, while teaching about the plight of Syrian Refugees. Even before starting work on their newest release, Elements, dedicated to tragedies in Almadani’s life, including the murder of his cousin, the destruction of his home and the sudden death of the band’s bassist, Bassel & The Supernaturals, were on the road giving concerts at universities and churches in an effort to raise awareness about what is happening in Syria. Bassel’s music had always dealt with personal feelings and experiences, and suddenly nothing was more personal than the war in Syria, so he started writing about that. Through combining his concerts with informal question and answer sessions, where no question is “out of bounds”, Bassel discovered he could help those in the United States connect with people profoundly affected by war half a world away. Bassel & The Supernaturals, is a multi-piece band that includes horns, keys, bass, guitar and drums, and was featured at the 2016 and 2017 South by Southwest Festival in Austin, TX. You can watch their video here. Please plan to join us as we learn about how we can help Syrian refugees and welcome this up and coming group of dynamic musicians! 7p, First United Methodist Church, 216 E. From This River Town

A Slice of the Writing Life By Mary Ellen Goodwill This is being written on a yellow legal pad with a blue uni-ball gel pen in the sunshine in my favorite outdoor chair on a perfect June morning. I call for Gracie to join me and she does, sitting in the nearby shade ever alert for birds at the feeders. Gracie is a fat gray cat who can run like a halfback. She was rescued from a difficult life in a horse barn and brought to me through a winter storm by my dear friend, Cyn, two and a half years ago. Goodness Gracious Gracie. She has her territory which rarely extends past our property and she has made friends with Jack, an older resident cat who is presently curled up behind the wood pile. Writer William Burroughs called cats our astral companions. Which brings to mind Sidd (for Siddhartha) our Persian/Siamese who is buried in a pink floral pillowcase under the old oak behind the yellow garage. Sidd cartwheeled his last cartwheel the same day as Ray Charles. I picture them doing high fives, furry white paw with extra toe batting Ray’s ebony — two cool cats on a wing and a prayer.

Tomorrow I will cross the river (the Kimball Street bridge is open!) and drive out to Siers Feed and Pet Supply Store on the frontage road off Larkin Avenue. There Abby the springer spaniel and Kye the shepherd/husky will sniff my sandals at length and catch the scent of my cats. Scott and his young son, Cole, will discuss the correct spelling of Kye’s name while Kody throws a forty pound sack of birdseed over his shoulder, walks it to my car and tosses it into the trunk. I will place in a five pound bag of cat food and two little sample packets which I never forget to take as Gracie and Jack appreciate the variety. Back home I’ll freshen the bird feeders and the cats’ bowls, reread this piece, edit, and transpose it onto my laptop where Gracie has learned to not walk over the keys. By the time this appears in the July BRAVO, raspberries will be plentiful on the bushes and Douglas Avenue residents will be grooming their porches and yards in preparation for the 4th of July parade followed by the droolingly delicious pie tasting contest at Side Street Gallery. Miss Goodwill’s novels can be found at Gail Borden and ECC libraries, Town House Books in St. Charles and on Amazon.

Taste: Tonight Starts Tomorrow

Life After Dark Some days, it takes forever for the clock to strike 5:00 pm. In December, quitting time looks like bedtime when you look out the window of your office. In July it looks like tee time. Time is an elastic experience. For some of us, life begins after 10:00 pm, when the music goes up, the lights go down, and the beverages go round and round. In many ways, life is different after dark, and it’s those peculiar spheres of late night activity that we analyzed for this piece on Elgin’s dark side.

It’s 10 O’clock Somewhere Looking at the number of businesses that are routinely open past 10pm, the largest category by far is bars and restaurants. Except for the fast food joints, most restaurants that remain open past the traditional dinner hour are also in the bar business, and as the night wears on, kitchens typically limit their menus to things that pair well with beer. In the Illinois Liquor Control Commission database, there are 164 establishments with Elgin or South Elgin addresses that are licensed for on-premise consumption. It’s a fascinating mashup of bars, clubs and institutions, where you’ll find pizza moguls and bartenders listed next to college presidents, city officials and grand poobahs. Bar time generally ends at 2am, but among the alphabet soup of Elgin li-

quor license classifications there are some notable exceptions: Grand Victoria Casino serves until at least 4am, and Medusa’s serves until 6am on some nights. Yes, all bars close eventually, even if it’s just for two hours when the sun rises. Footnote: Eaton’s Redwood Inn has the lowest-numbered (oldest) ILCC Class 1A license in Elgin and is one of only a few that could allow carry-outs (subject to local law).

Night Trade But there’s more to late night life than just abundant food and drink. The slots and gaming tables are open until 6:30am at Grand Victoria, and the weekend DJs and dancing don’t stop at Medusa’s until the last kid leaves the third floor around 3am. Medusa’s lower level Jet night club stays open until 6am to provide a dance-powered happy hour for all the other bartenders and servers who closed their places at 2am.

Photo by Michael Wilson, stagephotographic.com The latest of the late shows at Marcus Elgin Cinema start after 11:00pm, and Cinemark Spring Hill Mall starts the trailers as late as 10:45pm. If you’re still awake and hungry after the movie, you can hit the Spring Hill Denny’s or the Elgin IHOP for the finest in 24/7 dining. On the other hand, maybe it’s a workout you need after all the soda, popcorn, and Raisinets you just ate. You’re in luck, because there are at least five 24-hour gyms in the area. Sorry, laundry will have to wait until morning— all laundromats are closed. But you can pick up laundry detergent, deodorant, shoelaces, and all of life’s other necessities at an all-night Walmart Supercenter or Meijer store. In fact, you can get tomorrow’s low calorie frozen lunch entree while you’re there, unless you prefer the 24-hour Jewel-Osco or Woodman’s Market, all of which are on the west and far west side of town.

Fade to Black Hot, late summer nights tempt us to cruise the streets with the windows down, sniffing the breeze for honeysuckle blossoms, bonfires, or the aroma of tacos from 24-hour El Paraiso or El Faro. Keep

your eyes on the road, though, to avoid an unplanned meeting with someone’s kitty, and an unplanned visit to a 24hour vet. But accidents do happen late at night, like when a belly-button piercing goes terribly wrong and you need bandages and Neosporin immediately. Fortunately, Walgreens is open. And so are the emergency rooms at Advocate Sherman and Presence Saint Joseph hospitals. When injury or illness befall you after 10pm, your neighborhood urgent care is already closed, and a full ER experience, albeit a good one, is in your future. You can even get a ride, if necessary from your friendly local Elgin Fire Department EMS crew. If life and limb aren’t at stake, try A#1 cab dispatch no matter what time it is. Wheels never sleep. For those mechanical accidents like broken air conditioners, there’s plenty of help available. The second largest category of 24-hour businesses is plumbing, heating and air conditioning contractors. And if all else fails and your house becomes inhabitable, there are ten hotels to choose from less than ten minutes away. —EW
