Shared Values: An Interesting Place to Live

Route of the Expression They say you can read a person’s face a roadmap of their life: the color and landscape of their ancestry is criss-crossed by lines that trace the shape of smiles, scowls and frowns, darkened by the shadow of a life’s work, and good and bad habits. A few places may be scarred by catastrophe.

Her host, Christopher Murphy, had just sold a sculpture to a woman from Buffalo Grove (coincidentally) and was hosting a party for her and several other friends, most of whom had never met before. The Kellers were invited to join them, and intending to stay for just a glass a wine, they remained until midnight.

Capturing lives’ journeys in words and portraits became a milestone in the life of Jen Keller, an Elgin photographer and writer whose own road tripof-a-lifetime inspired the idea for her book, The Many Faces of Elgin.

“All night long, everybody was just telling their story, and I just thought ... this is so cool — these stories!”

❝ Who is your hero?

Artist: Carol L. Zack Carol L. Zack is an award winning, Elgin based artist specializing in soft and oil pastel painting. She is available for workshops, painting demonstrations, classes, custom framing, and commissioned works. Recent advances in pastel materials have led to a new appreciation and value for art enthusiasts and collectors, making the medium very desirable. She would love an opportunity to show you the medium and how fun it can be to paint with.

“In 2015, my husband and I took a 28-day road trip around the country,” she recounted. “We stayed at all Air BnB’s. In Santa Fe we stayed in this guy’s house for $50 a night. We showed up in the middle of the afternoon and he’s setting up for a dinner party, and I asked what’s the occasion?”

Carol offers pastel classes at The Fine Line Creative Arts Center, The Dupage Art League, and teaches privately in her studio. She is active in local and national art organizations to support a variety of local and community art programs. Her degrees include a BA in Arts Education from Vanderbilt University and an MA in Arts Education from The University of Illinois. She continues to use her art expertise to express the value art makes in all of our lives and makes the pastel medium approachable and exciting.

She was so impressed by the experience that she began to wonder if it could recreated close to home. She posed the question to her husband: “Could we throw a bunch of people together and see what happens?” For Jen Keller, the magic is in the happenstance of these things, and trying to recreate that magic with a forumula that worked once before seemed contrived. Instead, she posted her personal story idea on social media and asked for feedback — and willing participants. She was flooded with responses.

❝ Who was your

favorite teacher?

She started a dialog with each person by email and gave them a brief questionnaire to fill out. Sincere individuals who weren’t simply looking for free publicity (for their business) could get a ninety minute interview .

Look for her pastel paintings in an upcoming exhibition at Elgin’s Art Space hosted by The Yellow House Artists starting Oct. 17th. Yet despite their differences, their stories have many elements in common: international angles; educational journeys; medical challenges; faith, family and community. They are among the universal themes of human experience that connect all people, but discovering them in the personal stories of a seemingly random set of people living and working in her own town was a revelation.

❝ Who is someone

you would like to thank?

“Until this project, Elgin was just my address. I had no connection to Elgin at all, it was just where I lived,” she said. “That’s very different now. That’s completely changed with this project.”

She particularly admires what she sees as her subjects determination to improve themselves and their situation — their perseverance, their tenacity.

And yet these are not stories of lives that were perfectly planned and executed — few peoples’ lives are like that. In reality it’s the unexpected fortunes and failures that test each person’s commitment to a value system or a particular path forward. Keller never expected to become a high school German teacher, or move to Elgin, or publish a book of portraits and biographies, but that’s where her story led. “Everybody told me I needed to have my story in the book, but I didn’t want it in there,” she confessed. answers about herself, she swiftly changes the topic back to the Elginites she met, saying “Every single one of the stories I’ve written so far is ... inspirational. These people are amazing.”

❝ What is your

favorite Elgin moment?

In addition to the sixteen primary subjects in The Many Faces of Elgin, she prints the responses to five “Reflections questions,” collected from folks she approached in local coffee shops. As the term would suggest, the questions and answers are backward-looking. As for the future, each story concludes with little more than a nod to hopes, dreams and visions for the future. It underscores the subtext of Keller’s work: life doesn’t always go according to plan. Having seen the astonishing variety of people and places that make up America, Keller now considers Elgin her home. Her

friends and neighbors have provided enough fascinating material to fill a book, and she admits, “Elgin is so cool! It’s really special to me now. I have a connection to this town that’s really strong, and it’s all because of this.” —JP Jen Keller is an Elgin-based photographer, who loves capturing the everyday jobs of life. Her work focuses on nature and landscapes, but she also enjoys capturing the joys of people’s life-milestones. Her work has been on display throughout Elgin. She has taught German at Harlem High School for thirteen years. In her spare time, Jen loves traveling, baking, cooking, writing, crafting and spending time with her husband. ENCORE! Soirée Lyrique, NFP presents “Encore” – An Outdoor Concert (Ravinia Style) on Sunday June 11, 2017 at 3:00 pm on the Terrace of Snuffy’s Villa in West Dundee, sponsored by Nutrition First, Inc.

The Odd Couple There’s a reason “The Odd Couple” is a classic — not only is there scarcely a moment in the play that isn’t hilarious, but in the usual Neil Simon style there are also fresh and unexpected insights into human nature. “The humor of The Odd Couple is rooted in watching ordinary guys, equipped with an extraordinary arsenal of zingers, turn each other into irreconcilable caricatures of themselves, the way people do in bad marriages.” (from a New York Times review) See for yourself this month as the Elgin Theare Company brings this play to life on the stage of the Elgin Art Showcase, 164

By popular demand, Soirée Lyrique has invited tenors Franco Martorana and Simon Kyung Lee to return for a third outdoor performance of all-time favorite Italian Songs, Musical Theater, popular excerpts from Operas such as Rigoletto, Tosca, Traviata, Carmen and Manon Lescaut as well as standard excerpts. Ukrainian dramatic soprano, Tetyana Torzhevska and French Canadian soprano, Solange Sior will complete the cast along with the magnificent pianist, Dr. Chiayi Lee. Bring your own lawn chair and picnic and enjoy the beautiful three acres of rolling landscape ... or make a reservation for the seated area. Coming to Elgin for the first time June 16-18, this threeday festival presented by Side Street Studio Arts celebrates the female voice in the arts. Originally developed to address the underrepresentation of female choreographers in the dance world, GD grew into a multi-discipline festival, now including the work of self-identified female artists working in music, theatre, site-specific, and visual arts, as well as dance. Now in its 7th year, GD has moved from Chicago to The Professional Building in downtown Elgin. Performances and exhibitions will be held in unique spaces on the 6th floor and the beautiful Elgin Art Showcase on the 8th floor. For complete details, see the Going Dutch program included in selected copies of this month’s BRAVO Magazine, or go to sidestreetstudioarts.org/going-dutch-festival. A $25 festival pass gets you into all performances, and individual shows are $10 each.

Most Tuesday nights in June and July feature music right here in Elgin with the City of Elgin’s summer concerts in the park. All concerts are free of charge, but remember to bring a few dollars to purchase popcorn and other treats from one of our local Elgin non-profits, as well as lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the live music. All concerts begin at 7pm at the Wing Park Bandshell.

June 20th will feature the StingRays. This classic rock band always gets the crowd dancing and singing to songs from Rockabilly -- tons of sixties -- to the 70’s. They’ve opened for some of the greatest names in Rock & Roll like the Ides of March, the Buckinghams, and the Guess Who. On June 27th, the Second Hand Soul Band will be in town, and Motown, Soul, Rock & Roll is what you are in for. This energetic, dynamic seven-piece band has many years of experience and really knows how to entertain! Between the funky hits of the 70s, the one-hit wonders, the disco and the soulful songs of that era, you will be moved to dance and sing; “Songs you remember from the nights you don’t!”

The Festivals are Coming Going Dutch? For my entire life going dutch has always meant paying your own way. The movies and television have portrayed going dutch as a line for a woman to say that helps a nervous man feel comfortable on a first date. In those situations the truth is that the woman is in control. Women will also be taking control and running the show when Going Dutch, a celebration of the female voice in dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts opens on June 16th, 17th and 18th at Side Street Studio Arts.

Going Dutch originally began seven years ago to address the underrepresentation of female choreographers in the dance world. Over those 7 years the idea grew and expanded to include the work of self-identified female artists working in music, theater, site-specific, and visual art as well as dance. Mini-Media Guide: FEED 411

How to Get Your Events Listed for FREE in The FEED Publishing and promoting all the things to do in Elgin is why we started BRAVO. We are eager to fill our pages with your events, concerts, festivals, lectures, arts happenings and more.

What We Don’t Want Commercial messages, like “$9.99 Friday Fish Fry” belong in your ad, not in the FEED. Since BRAVO is freely distributed to the general public, private events should not be listed.

Repeating Events Some kinds of events repeat regularly, like bird watching or French conversation groups. If these events are open, they are welcome in the FEED.

Basic Event Submission Visit our online event submission page and fill out the form. Fill in all your event details, along with your own contact info in case there are questions.

Automatic Submission Fortunately, we have a means of collecting events from certain kinds of schedules you post on your website or social media. If your website has a built-in calendar feature, there’s a good

chance that your scheduled event data can be accessed over the internet, in a form that’s conducive to publishing in the FEED. The technology is called RSS (Really Simple Syndication). Ask your webmaster about it. Then tell us the URL (web address) of your calendar RSS feed, and we will take it from there.

Facebook Events We can access the events you create in your Facebook account, provided they are open, public events. All we need is your Facebook ID, which is a number consisting of 10-15 digits. You can determine this number by following the tips at findmyfacebookid.com (see link below).

Google Calendar If you have a Google account, you have free access to a suite of useful tools, including a calendar that can be accessed as an RSS feed. Edit your calendar settings and make your calendar public (or share it with us). You can obtain the URL of your calendar’s RSS feed by clicking the “XML” button. Boom! Send us that URL!

FEED.links http://www.marqueemedia.net/events Fill out the form with your event title, date, time, location, phone number, short description, and price. Your name, email and phone number are also required in case we need to double-check your details! http://www.findmyfacebookid.com Go to the Facebook profile page for your business. Copy the URL (web address) shown in your browser’s location field. Go to findmyfacebookid.com and paste your profile page URL into the box at the top of the screen. Click Submit. The next screen will display your Facebook ID. Send us that number.

Socks as Backup By Mary Ellen Goodwill Tomorrow’s another day. You’ll feel better in the morning. We’ll see what tomorrow brings. These were reassurances my parents gave me when I was moping and complaining. They were positive statements which never failed to make me feel better. That is, until the afternoon when great aunt Bea got up from the dining table and announced with finality, “Tomorrow never comes.” The adults smiled. I was not amused. That night I lay in bed terrified. Whaddya mean, tomorrow never comes? What’s that MEAN? Who’s going to feed Cinders (my cat)? Who’s going to take carrots down to the pasture for Chi-chi (our Mexican burro)? What about the leftover fudge in the pantry? Literal and figurative — big distinctions for a little kid. When my neighbor Max was four and frustrated with Lego towers which would not balance, I suggested, in hopes of averting a meltdown, “Hey, let’s try something else. We’re done here. Time to throw in the towel.”

He got up, walked directly to the bathroom and threw the hand towel into the toilet. We’ll see what tomorrow brings. In the meantime, we plan, we hope and we dream. Does a day pass when we do not think about tomorrow? Annie sang with great exuberance, “Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love you, tomorrow, you’re only a day a-waaay.” It’s a sad and lonely day when we abandon our dreams for tomorrow. I tried that once. I thought I was defeated. I saw myself as a dried out empty picture frame. No joy. What a drag. It was socks that rescued me. One pair requiring one trip to Macy’s. That was the plan that kept hope alive. In the morrow I would buy a pair of socks. The buying of the socks led to the buying of sea salt foot scrub, a cotton nightgown and a Godiva dark chocolate bar. “One thing leads to another.” “Keep your chin up.” Always have a chocolate stash and if, in all good conscience, you have purchased enough pairs of socks (for a lifetime?) buy some for a friend and gift them to her tomorrow. —MEG Miss Goodwill’s novels can be found at Gail Borden and ECC libraries, at Townhouse Books in St. Charles and on Amazon.

Expression: The Local Dialect

Moore’s Shop Local By Jamey Bouwmeester “Shop Local,” the latest album by Elgin-based MC, Moore is a study in contrasts. The first thing that one notices about the album (even before Moore’s lyrics – which we’ll get to soon), are the eclectic and infectious backing tracks. If I were to sum up the mood of the album’s music (mostly credited to Moore, A. Dyson, and A. Jeffries), I’d be hard pressed to find a better description than ‘laid back.’ The first time I listened to “Shop Local” I was lying in the grass on a warm afternoon, which turned out to be

the perfect setting. The music never hurries; it winds and meanders without any agenda or need to arrive at a fixed destination. The effect is a pleasant, almost physical, indica-like fullbody peacefulness. The cumulative effect is almost meditative. The first contrast comes when one stirs from the dreamy contemplation induced by the tracks and begins to focus on Moore’s lyrics. Over the eleven tracks in “Shop Local,” Moore masterfully pulls the listener in with an album’s worth of topical songs that

ignite conversations surrounding everything from interpersonal relationships, to controversial political issues; from the way we eat, to the way we process grief, to the way we stand in the world. Moore tackles these subjects with passion and intensity. However, the lyrics never extinguish the serene and tranquil feeling engendered by the music, rather they complicate the feeling and give it nuance and depth. “Anti-Social,” the album’s first single, is set over a soft and bouncy bossa-nova with highlights of jazz flute. It would feel right at home in a New-Wave Italian movie with Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg riding Vespas through Rome. Moore immediately subverts that mod/swinger vibe with lyrics that lash out at a world that is relentless in its attempts to control and use his talent, as well as the people in his life that bring negativity and unearned criticism. He labels his anger ‘anti-social’ and it’s certainly seen that way by its targets, yet in context we clearly see it as righteous and healthy. Moore’s anger and vitriol come to a head in “Can’t Stand By,” a scathing and ardent indictment of the systematic racism that infects out criminal justice system. I can’t stand by when they’re killing people, and they’re killing people. They tell you we’re equal, then call you illegal. The system is evil. It’s an explicitly political song,

yet also deeply personal. Issues of police violence and mass incarceration can often feel distant and almost academic. It’s hard to let the injustice in; it’s an uncomfortable and difficult subject – easier left at arm’s length. With his cri de coeur, Moore allows us into his pain, giving us permission to feel it with him. It’s a moving and valuable gift. While much of the album is explicitly political, Moore closes with three songs (“Alive,” “Live for Me,” and “Breathe”) that serve as a concluding suite mourning friends and family who have passed, especially those whose lives were cut short prematurely. After the anger and righteous indignation of earlier tracks, Moore moves into a quieter and more introspective mood here. However, that doesn’t mean he shies away from his subject and the truths that he needs to tell. He grieves for loved ones lost to suicide, overdoses, and infant death. There’s anger here, but not the rage of previous songs. Rather, the overwhelming emotion is one of resolute responsibility – the responsibility to live life to the fullest on behalf of those who no longer have that opportunity. On “Shop Local,” Moore lives in paradox. He’s created a meditative jeremiad. One that’s political yet deeply personal, frustrated yet fervently hopeful, full of anger yet overflowing with love. “Shop Local” is a statement for our time. It’s relevance and artistry make it well worth a listen. —JB

With all its process variations, regional styles and emphasis on technique, you could almost compare barbecue with jazz. Each is a distinct article of Americana that’s easier to describe by explaining what it isn’t, than by specifying what it is. Historically, the English word is borrowed from the Spanish barbacoa, which was imported from barabicu, an indigenous Caribbean word that referred to a rack of sticks mounted on posts. That lends credence to the assertion that true barbecue is created by slowly roasting meat with heat and smoke over a wood fire. That basic principle has been applied in numerous places to a variety of meats. In the Deep South, pork is prevalent because of the local population of wild hogs. Beef is prominent in Texas where vast grasslands support and abundance of cattle, and Kansas City is home to a cornucopia of barbecue pork, beef, sausage, poultry and even fish, owing to its history as a hub of the meat packing industry. The flavors are further elaborated by a variety of fire woods — mainly from fruit trees (apple, cherry, peach) and nut trees (hickory, pecan) — and every kind of sauce and seasoning conceivable by the mind of Man. After twenty generations on this continent, the appetite for barbecue is now deeply instilled in American palates, and a midwestern city of roughly 100,000 people could not possibly survive without barbecue on restaurant menus. Our unscientific survey of Elgin restaurants produced a list of at least seventeen kitch-

ens that serve barbecued meats in some form (see sidebar). All of these preparations seem to involve slow cooking, but most do not involve wood fires and smoke. To barbecue meat without smoke, it must be braised or roasted with some moisture to soften the texture, and then broiled or grilled to simulate the traditional smoke flavor with a charred surface of meat or caramelized sugars from a sauce. At Danny’s on Douglas, the ribs are braised in a seasoned broth then finished under a hot broiler to achieve the desired effect, according to David Leith, a lifelong Elgin resident who has worked in several different commercial kitchens. Essential every non-pit barbecue also relies on BBQ sauce to deliver some of the smoke flavor, which comes from liquid smoke flavoring of the sort that has been in use for hundreds of years. And then there’s true pit barbecue, cooked in smoke from a wood fire in the presence of steam. There are currently two restaurants in Elgin that smoke the meats on the premises. The Elgin BBQ Pit produces a variety of barbecued meats from its indoor “aquarium” smoker, a glass enclosure containing racks for roasting and stainless steel hood and chimney to vent the smoke outside. You can smell the meat cooking as you approach the small east side location from at least a block away, depending on the wind direction. This menu leans south of the border, with jerk chicken, jalape-

no slaw, and brisket tacos on the menu alongside the usual ribs, pulled pork and southern style garnishes. The menu is complemented with a variety of burgers and fried seafood as well. The barbecue formula here is tried and true: meats are seasoned with a dry rub, then smoked until done, and served with a variety of house made sauces on the side, one of which is a tropical inspired habanero mango. Across town, a substantial barbecue concession has brought the kitchen back to life at the Dutch Inn West, which now serves food six days a week starting at 11am. The backbone of the menu is smoked meat sandwiches consisting sliced brisket, corned beef, ham or or pulled pork or chicken. According to Steve Hopp, everything at the Hopp Stop BBQ is homemade, including potato salad, and a unique fruity cole slaw. Even the bread is made locally by Herb’s Bakery. But the star of the show is the meats.

“Closest to the fire, it gets up to 450 degrees, and 350 in the middle and 250 at the opposite end,” he explained. “You have to move the meat every hour all day so it cooks at the same rate.” He upgraded to a commercially made pit with an internal rotisserie, propane flame, thermostat and a 600-pound capacity, and that’s where his product is now made. There’s less handling involved, but the process takes just as long. “Brisket takes about ten hours in the pit, and ribs anywhere from six to twelve hours,” Hopp said. The cooking time depends on the type and thickness of the meat. At Hopp’s the ribs are full size pork ribs weighing about three pounds per slab, and that’s without sauce. His process begins with a secret dry rub that goes on the ribs Thursday afternoon, more than 24 hours before smoking. On Saturday morning, the ribs go in the smoker early and once they’re about half done, they are repeatedly hand-dipped in homemade barbecue sauce, which has also been smoked in the pit. “These racks are self-basting. As the meat goes around the rotisserie, it drips on the rack below it.” As supper time approaches, Hopp checks the ribs for doneness by bending the slab at each end to see if it breaks. If

With forty years experience, Hopp knows what he likes and how to make it. He uses only fruit woods, never nut woods, because the flavor is never ashy or bitter. He uses only full size pork ribs, never baby back ribs, “because the slabs are no more than a pound and three-quarters each, and to me, that’s not enough meat.” His original smoker was a traditional Texas pit made from a section of oil pipeline that once smoked brisket at

it does, they are ready to serve. “This is competition cooking,” he pointed out. “You don’t want it falling off the bone, you want to chew it off the bone.” On a typical Saturday, Hopp’s will smoke about fifty slabs, and they frequently run out, even though one full slab is enough for three meals. The demand is such that they now ask for a deposit on advance orders to

ensure they get picked up. During the week, beef brisket is a mainstay on the menu, and they don’t call Hopp the “Corned Beef King” for nothing. Smoked corned beef at the Hopp Stop is a unique specialty. “Corned beef is basically a beef brisket that’s been pickled, and there’s a lot of salt in it,” he said. Hopp has his corned beef produced locally with a custom brine that contains half the usual amount of salt. “If you smoked a regular corned beef, it’d be too salty to eat.” Pound for pound, the brisket entrees fetch a price comparable to the ribs, but historically that wasn’t always the case. “Brisket is the part of the cow that’s closest to the grass, and it’s also the toughest. I used to pay sixty cents a pound for it because nobody wanted it. Then all the yuppies started getting their own smokers and now it’s about four bucks a pound. I could get top sirloin for the same price!” He’s alluding to a trend in home smoking which, like home brewing once did, is enjoying a surge in popularity. Gentlemen “foodies” — especially those on self-prescribed low carb diets — gravitate to the traditional barbecue process and all its carnivorous mystique. “My goal with my barbecue is to do the least amount of steps, and keep the food that we’re eating as honest as possible,” said Matt Martin an avid meat smoker in Elgin. “That’s why I enjoy the Central Texas style the best. Meat, salt, pepper, fire ... that’s it!” The process is surprisingly similar, even on a small scale, and the challenges are sometimes greater for equipment used by home pit bosses. “Humidity, temperature, and wind all make it a different fire every time, and with a brisket that might cook for 16 hours, that’s the biggest challenge,” Martin explained.

tions is not sufficient. There’s an intuition that gets sharpened with experience, and a sense of touch and temperature that can be learned but never taught. And when all the right ingredients come together in the hands of a true master, the end product is exquisite and irresistible. That’s why we stand in the queue to hear a band on Beale Street, and why we wait in line to get some ‘cue. “Aquarium” smoker at Elgin BBQ Pit.
