On the Cover: Elgin, Illinois Acrylic, 24 x 24 inches Emmett Shaw Grosland is an Elgin native currently living and working in New York City as a multi-disciplinary artist. He is currently an artist in residence at the Con Artist Collective in NYC. He is developing a career that creates space for trans and gender non-conforming artists on stage and in the audience. As a non-binary trans male actor, he uses his work as an opportunity for advocacy, both adding to and lifting up voices that are currently underrepresented within the industry. His work includes significant roles in off-Broadway productions, in regional and touring companies, film and television. He brings skills in music, dance, and visual art to the craft.

The Music Of Friends A conversation among friends is inherently self-limiting in terms of size. We like to talk to each other in pairs and trios and foursomes, and occasionally tolerate a “fifth wheel.” More than that and we split into separate conversations and lose the narrative. It works that way among musicians, too. Three to five people was the right amount for Nirvana, The Black Eyed Peas, The Rolling Stones and millions of other bands, even the ones jamming in their basements just for the fun of it. It’s a pattern as old as instrumental music itself, named by a word that literally means “to share with”: consort. Since the Middle Ages, musicians have formed small groups to play in homes for pleasure, and over time created an artistic medium to which history’s greatest composers would apply their creativity. For centuries, this music rarely left the parlors, halls or

even bedrooms of the middle and upper classes, hence the term “chamber music.”

Fiddling Around “Chamber music tends to be the one thing that every classical musician loves,” said Sara Sitzer, ESO cellist and co-Artistic Director of Chamber Music on the Fox. “They do it for the joy of playing together, the love of the repertoire, and the satisfaction of achieving a ridiculously high level of excellence. It’s artistically fulfilling and good for the soul.” However, that string trio you see at a corporate Christmas party, Nordstrom’s sale or wedding is probably not chamber music. Sure, it’s highly skilled musicians playing classical music, but they are there to earn a needed paycheck, not to indulge their creativity. As Sitzer puts it, “There is no satisfaction to be derived from playing Pachelbel’s Canon in D

As a freelance illustrator and designer, his passion lies in creating with a pen, paper, paint and canvas, but he is equally at home with digital design, blending the two worlds together to bring an element of “hand” or “sketch” into his graphic work. “Elgin, Illinois” is one of a series of paintings that deal with geographic subjects to which he has a special attachment, expressed in a visual idiom that suggests aerial views of cities rendered as a mosaic of colorful cells. Like stained tissue seen under a microscope, the paintings ask whether a common DNA connects the subdivided urban structures. “Elgin, Illinois” is available for purchase. every weekend of the summer.” What’s missing from these gigs is “the music of friends.”

Four Part Harmony For audiences, the distinction between entertainment and art is often blurry like that, but the difference is clear for the musicians. Playing ceremonial music or cocktail classics is just executing someone else’s instructions. Choosing a piece, studying it and expressing ideas with it is conscious and intentional, and that creative process transforms the activity into a performance of art. “The beauty of chamber music is the fact that each member of the ensemble has an equal say when it comes to any musical decision to be made,” explained Sitzer. “That process is time-consuming,” said Theresa Goh, violist and Director of the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Chamber Music Institute. “Especially compared to the equivalent process in an orchestra where the conductor just tells everyone how to play.”

training, musical understanding and creativity. It starts with a healthy sense of individuality that enables a musician to handle a piece in which every part is essentially a solo. In a chamber ensemble, “There’s nobody playing your part with you,” said Goh. “There is no room to hide or depend on others to do the work for you.” Mutual respect is paramount. “Working with high-level repertoire and committing to a certain level of excellence in performance requires even more communication, listening, empathy and cooperation.” Reaching consensus calls for clear reasoning, persuasion and risk. “It takes a lot of trust, but there’s also great joy in being able to make these artistic decisions with a small group of friends.”

(CMI) is a powerful auxiliary program of the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra (EYSO), and it currently consists of 26 separate string, wind and brass ensembles, in all sorts of configurations, playing music by the likes of Brahms, Mendelssohn and Schubert. But their playlist is by no means limited to the masters — CMI ensembles have played new music by their own

Composer-in-Residence Ethan Purcell, or Elgin native Daniel Brewbaker, and some student groups have even created their own original variations. It reflects the fertility of chamber music as a vibrant and eclectic genre for composers. “There’s music written for everything,” Sitzer enthused. “There are all sorts of random ensembles out there that play lots of new music. There are a slew of new music ensembles that focus solely on this, and Chicago is a hot spot for these groups.”

The Trio Life The chamber music scene is heating up in Elgin, too. Chamber Music on the Fox is now in its fourth season of presenting a five-concert series of programs that feature a wide variety of music, instrumentation, venues and players from Elgin, Chicago and elsewhere.

Perhaps lesser known to concert-going crowds are the ESO’s eight chamber ensembles, referred to as “traveling ensembles” because they go out into the community to perform at schools, retirement communities, libraries and hospitals. They are vital to the nonprofit’s mission of education and community service, and help to keep future audiences engaged. But the music is more than just functional. Guest Commentary: The Elgin Review One sixty minute concert by seven ensembles of the Elgin Youth Symphony’s Chamber Music Institute displays how effective a musician can become by playing regularly within a small group. Spending time together with a shared objective — preparing a piece of music for performance — exposes each individual’s style of reasoning and communicating, and advancement toward the group’s goal requires everyone’s participation. It was visible in the faces of the Sul Tasto Quartet, as one player smiled knowingly at the efforts of another in negotiating

The Quince Quintet of EYSO’s Chamber Music Institute.

a particularly tricky passage. For these young musicians, the technical accuracy may be less important than the experience of being valued for one’s individual contribution. Any casual listener can recognize performance jitters and musical imperfections in student group recitals, but a more sensitive observation reveals an unspoken dialogue that takes place among players. A glance asks, “Are you ready?” and a deep breath says, “Yes.” As the music unfolds, their body language signals that they are using the part of the mind that controls communication, not just movement. The work may not be equally subdivided in a chamber ensemble, but it is certainly shared. As one violinist started to outpace the Gershwin Quartet during an especially busy few bars, cellist Emily Gallagher’s tapping toe reset the tempo to keep the group in sync. All musicians rely on their

printed parts or scores in order to keep the group effort literally “on the same page.” Following the notes (like words) carefully during a performance is a comfort, if not a necessity, but over time the music will be understood in units of larger scale (like sentences and paragraphs). The Really Fast Quartet demonstrated the effect of music that is more felt than timed, in their original rendition of “found music” borrowed from Mozart. A small group of mature musicians perform like the cast of a play, exchanging cues, directing the audience’s attention, and shaping episodes with each different combination of players to create a musical narrative. The similarity is not lost on the Earl Clemens Wind Quintet, one of the EYSO’s Honors Chamber Ensembles. Their skillful individual performances were enhanced by clear interactions that drew upon trust, mutual understanding and the unspoken language that develops among friends. — JP

However, he decides to postpone jail for one night so that he can go to Prince Orlofsky’s lavish soirée with his friend Falke. Meanwhile, Rosalinda knows that Eisenstein is lying and follows him in disguise as a Hungarian countess. The Nutcracker It’s Christmas Eve, and the party is in full swing. The adults are enchanted in conversation, the children are busy playing with their presents, and the host’s children are amazed with joy at the wonder of it all. There’s an element of danger on the horizon though, heralded by the arrival of local magician Herr Drosselmeyer. He comes bearing gifts for the children, including a wooden nutcracker for Clara, the oldest child. However, her younger brother Fritz is jealous of the toy, and maliciously breaks the toy’s jaw, to Clara’s despair. When the clock strikes midnight, the atmo-

This is just the start of an adventure which will lead our heroine and her magical Nutcracker prince into a war between mice and tin soldiers and into the enchanted Land of Sweets where a festival awaits them. This classic ballet comes to the Hemmens Cultural Center December 2nd at 7 p.m. and Sunday, December 3rd at 2 p.m. The Nutcracker is directed by Linda Cunningham and features professional dancers from New York City Ballet, Joffrey Ballet and Bolshoi Brazil. De-Mystifying the Kwanzaa Holiday by Tish Powell One of my first deep dives into Kwanzaa was when a childhood friend decided to have an African-themed wedding. I was given the role of the Storyteller — which included reciting each of the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa during the ceremony. Learning how to pronounce all of the principles, especially “Kujichagulia”, was an accomplishment in itself, and one that renewed my curiosity about the Kwanzaa holiday.

Christmas Concert of Worship with Huntley Brown See above. 7p, Judson University Herrick Chapel, 1151 N. State Street 847.628.2500 judsonu. edu The Nutcracker presented by Chicago Ballet Conservatory It’s Christmas Eve, and the party is in full swing. The adults are enchanted in conversation, the children are busy playing with their presents, and the host’s children are amazed with joy at the wonder of it all. There’s an element of danger on the horizon though, heralded by the arrival of local magician Herr Drosselmeyer. He brings bearing gifts for the children, including a wooden nutcracker for Clara, the oldest child. However, Fritz her younger brother is jealous of the toy, and maliciously breaks the toy’s jaw, to Clara’s despair. When the clock strikes midnight, the atmosphere changes; the party is over and everybody is asleep. This is just the start of an adventure which will lead our heroine and her magical Nutcracker prince into a war between mice and tin soldiers and into the enchanted Land of Sweets where a festival awaits them. From This River Town

Winter White Winter White Darkest Evening Darkest Night by Mary Ellen Goodwill December 21st is the first day of winter. It is winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. If the darkness is clear, the stars will be ice white. The train whistle will be sharp, the pine trees majestic. Each day thereafter

we can look forward to daylight lengthening and we might begin to think about the mud of March and the lilies of April. But the day of the solstice is one I would like to place on pause. It is quite miraculous.

A year has ended and a year has begun. The gift of this December night can bring clarity. It can bring magic. Turn off the lights and bury the phone. Unplug everything except the furnace and the fridge.

Shared Values: Christmas Carillon

Local Toll Calls Our homes, cars, even our pockets and handbags are filled with the sound of beeps and chirps from machines trying to get our attention. They’re a commonplace of our modern, highly “connected” and personalized experience, and intended to be heard by just one set of ears. Ironically, these personal signaling systems tend to disconnect us from the people around us, as we’re forced to ignore others’ signals and listen only for our own. possible to distribute messages widely and simultaneously, tower bells were the lingua franca of everyday life.

When a bell is heard unexpectedly through the sound system of a shopping center or office, everyone stops what they’re doing and looks at each other in the face to ask, “What’s happening?”

The ancients believed that the sound of struck metal had the power to ward off evil spirits or adverse forces of nature, and eventually small bells found their way into religious rites. By the seventh century large metal striking plates, capable of being heard over long distances, were employed by religious orders to reinforce a daily schedule of meals, worship and prayer.

Copper Conductors The power of public address takes many forms, but few are as public as the sound of bells from a tower or steeple. In an age before electricity made it

bells were in widespread use in Europe during the Middle Ages, primarily as calls to worship, funeral announcements or for marking time. Single bell tolls, organized into timed sequences, conveyed specific information to anyone within earshot, believers or otherwise. Their sounds were dissonant and their role was purely functional, not in any way artistic. But that would change.

St. John’s Lutheran Church in downtown Elgin. “We ring it at the beginning of every worship service and at the end of every funeral, when the casket is being taken to the hearse,” One historic funeral tradition calls for nine bell tolls upon the death of a man, six tolls for a woman and three tolls for a child, followed by one toll for each year of their age. It served as a public notice as well as a symbolic farewell to souls bound for the afterlife. “We have also tolled the bell in solemn commemoration of unfortunate events,” Pastor Frederich continued, “After Sandy Hook, we rang the bell for each life taken.” Although the tragedy was not a local one, the bell acknowledged our community’s shared experience of grief on a national level.

were torn down and replaced by Anglican churches. Bells of different sizes were reused, combined in sets of three or more, and mounted in a new way: just above their midlines so that each bell could swing end-over-end in a full circle. Within 100 years, English bell-ringing developed into an art consisting of a series of ever-changing multi-bell ringing sequences called a peal. Improved bronze bell-casting technology (word of the day: campanology) developed in Belgium, which made it possible to build a set of musically tuned bells capable of sounding melodies played by an organist with the help of levers attached to ropes. This type of indoor/outdoor instrument, called a carillon, was first introduced into America in 1922.

By their very nature, ringing bells can’t be kept secret or private. This is why they’ve always been used to signify the beginning and end of work shifts, school days, Wall Street trading sessions, and calendar years. “I hear St. Joe’s bell in the morning when I come to work,” said George Rowe, the building superintendent at Elgin’s First United Methodist Church (FUMC). He’s referring to St. Joseph Church, another congregation that worships and operates a primary school on Elgin’s “Holy Hill.”

The iron steeple stands empty atop the 1924 building, but the sound of bells has returned, thanks to a 2004 gift from the Ziegler Family. An electronic carillon consisting of 49 separate digital recordings of individually tuned bells plays melodies from a library of more than 200 tunes, as well as single bell tolls and multi-bell peals. The amplified sound emanates from speakers in the steeple at noon and 3 p.m. daily, playing tunes selected by Rowe with input from Pastor Richard Carlson. The FUMC carillon, made by the Verdin Company, is identical to the one in the steeple of the First United Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple, the tallest church building in the world, also built in 1924.

The remaining towers and steeples are empty at most of the local churches we contacted, although the First Congregational Church of Dundee is considering a bell refurbishing project in the future. In Elgin, our acoustic environment is dominated by horns blaring from passing railroad locomotives, but these sounds don’t remain here; they don’t belong here. Administration Building since 1967, ringing out hymns twice daily and announcing chapel services three days a week. It was installed and maintained by the same man for nearly fifty yers, George T. Hellman. Hellman has retired and the carillon is once again in need of repairs.

In keeping with history, the carillons can also be played directly from a 49-note keyboard, which is sometimes done for special occasions.

For Whom the Bells Toll Sadly, church bells and carillons are losing their significance in the 21st century, partly because their purposes are now more efficiently served by other means, but also because the machines are highly specialized and delicate, and repair technicians are hard to find. Rowe’s file of information on the FUMC carillon bears a handwritten record of mechanical setbacks and the people who resolved them. Judson University has had a Schulmerich carillon in the third floor of the Harm A. Weber
