Operations Directors Opera is possibly the most sophisticated of all art forms because it represents the consummate marriage of the visual, literary, musical and dramatic arts. And to produce work of that scale and complexity requires highly refined skills of management.

their ensemble training program, I had students, I had a church job, and I was singing in restaurants for fifty dollars a night.”

Some of the greatest creators of the genre were equally adept at business and public relations. It’s the only way they could possibly have assembled hundreds of artists in a room together with a paying audience to present an experience that only lasts a couple of hours.

Like any other working musician, she was constantly hustling to line up gigs.

Managing To Survive On the Cover: Rooster Acrylic, 18 x 24 inches Available on commission Peruvian born, Jorge Diaz is a self taught painter. At age five he started drawing large landscapes with an unusual devotion in his interpretation. It was an immense experience that brought him a profound satisfaction at such a young age. As an adolescent Jorge expanded to paint portraits and still life. At the same time, he also gained considerable experience in equestrian sports. In 1979 he entered military school and graduated in 1983 as second-lieutenant of the Cavalry, excelling in fencing, jumping horses and shooting. In 1991 Jorge graduated as Systems Engineer. Five years later he retired from the Army as Major, and migrated to the US to pursue further education. In Nevada, starting over, he held different jobs as a student. In 1999 he moved to Richmond and married. Two years later a providential circumstance in life made Jorge return to his earlier yearning and satisfaction of painting. While a resident of Elgin from 2013-2017, Jorge was an active member and exhibitor with Art for All Elgin, and his paintings were seen regularly in public galleries throughout the City and at the annual Art & Soul on the Fox. Jorge is a professional computer systems analyst currently living with his family in Richmond. See more of Jorge’s work at www.DiazFineArt.com

“I was the Artistic Director, I was the Executive Director, I was the grant writer, and I was the Treasurer,” recalls Solange Sior of her ten years with Elgin OPERA, the nonprofit she founded in 2001. “And I wrote a letter of resignation.”

She admits to being a workaholic and a perfectionist in those days, but now realizes “sometimes you better shut up and not be perfect, and still have a voice.”

“I organized Christmas Caroling with costumes, mixed with opera and musical theatre. We did all the big hotels, the country clubs — we were everywhere.” She sold dinner packages at Elliot’s restaurant on Randall Road, featuring concerts of Viennese music or the singing of three tenors. “But you could just break even. You could never earn any money from it.”

It was a destiny she had not foreseen as a beguiling young French-Canadian soprano from Montréal, Quebec. “I met an American in Cocoa Beach, Floria when I was on vacation with my parents,” she said. “We really liked each other, so one of us had to emigrate in order to be together.” The man was from South Elgin. “I came here all alone, no family, nothing. I could barely speak English when I came.” The couple rented an apartment near Wing Park and Solange sought singing opportunities in Chicago while her husband attended school. They eventually bought a house on Elgin’s west side. “I had, like, five jobs. I was in the Lyric Opera chorus, and in

To make matters worse, she split with her husband and lost her mother. “At that point in 1999, I was teaching and didn’t do much singing,” she reflected. “I was depressed.” Solange decided to audition for a part in Puccini’s La Bohème, an American production being staged in Amalfi, Italy. She was only counting on a change of scenery to lift her spirits, but got the leading role. And once the producers heard her sing, they wanted her for a production of Suor Angelica at the Shaker Mountain Performing Arts Festival in upstate New York. “I had booked my flight to stay a little longer in Italy,” as Solange tells it. “I was supposed to visit a monastery, but instead I bought the score, bought a CD player and stayed at my hotel practicing Suor Angelica five hours a day on the piano in the dining room.” A week later, she was bringing audiences to tears with her compelling performance. She would be invited back to Shaker Mountain two more times to sing leading roles in Massenet’s Manon and Gounod’s Faust. “The music really helped me heal.”

An Elgin Aria Audience Solange always returned home to Elgin, to continue her work in Chicago, but the local opportunities were few and far between unless she created them herself. Having tested the free market and finding it unable to support

even the lowest of wages for working artists, she looked into public funding to fill the gap. “That’s when I decided to incorporate, so I could apply for grants.” A friend from Elgin Choral Union (now Elgin Master Chorale)

suggested the name “Opera Professional Entertainers Repertoire Association” (O.P.E.R.A.). She began to organize concerts in Elgin with singers from the Lyric Opera, joined by

a chorus of her private students and members of the Larkin High School choir. Their first event, titled “Songs of the Heart,” was held in SecondSpace Theatre at ECC in February 2002. For the next six years, she reguarly produced a variety of events at First United Methodist Church and ECC, connecting professionals from around the country with talented amateurs from the Fox Valley. The concerts were often a collection of operatic works, standards and show tunes tied together with a simple plot developed by the cast. “We were goofy!” laughed Solange, looking through scrapbooks of old photos. “We made it goofy because we tried to bring a general audience. People are scared of

opera, right? But when they come and see our stuff, they like it.” Surviving on a few grant dollars, sponsorships and ticket sales, O.P.E.R.A. created an impressive and well-documented track record that culminated in three fully staged operas: Die Fledermaus (2005), La Traviata (2006) and Madame Butterfly (2007). Solange orchestrated the efforts of costume makers, set builders, accompanists, and a Board of Directors who shared in the work.

The high profile continued with ambitious symphonic gala concerts, summer festivals, and benefit recitals, and the list of donors and sponsors lengthened. The Elgin OPERA Guild was formed, and partnerships with other local artists and organizations grew and flourished. Among the most loyal supporters were Mayor Ed Schock, Sterling “Stu” Ainsworth, and restaurateur Pietro Verone.

But Solange was always the center of gravity for this universe, and her energy and aspirations continued to increase. No one could outperform her, and many stopped trying to keep up. “I had thirteen board members who would come and tell me what do and all go home. with amazing style and sensitivity. The 2017 SCORE! original opera “Drifted Apart” explored the connected stories of two displaced immigrant families during the 1940’s. The plot involves flawed characters, complex relationships and symbolism that communicate a value system the cast and crew have developed together. The 50-minute SCORE! performances are held annually in mid-July at ECC’s Blizzard Theatre. “It’s a huge undertaking, but it’s beyond-words rewarding,” said Risé. said Risé. “We view SCORE! as a ‘stage’ for empowering children and their families with an orientation for success, and the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and abilities in the creation of a tangible public product.” These original operas are more than talent show skits. With the mentorship of accomplished writers, musicians and artists, the stories address serious subjects

The Impresaria As the seasons go by, Solange Sior loves to reflect on the success of her students and colleagues. Paging through scrapbooks, she can remember each person’s name and where their journey has taken them — one sings professionally in Germany, another tours with a band, one is Executive Director of Elgin Master Chorale (Elizabeth Niemeier) and another has started her own studio and opera company in Minnesota. She continues to teach through her Fox Valley Music Studio,

and organizes performances through Soirée Lyrique. “I like it. I like organizing, I like auditioning singers and finding new talent and lauching them.” After a few years of recharging and rebuilding, her newest big project is a revival of Strauss’ operetta Die Fledermaus, set for New Year’s Eve at First United Methodist Church. It’s the latest in a series of collaborations with Chamber Music on the Fox made possible by the Palmer Foundation and Elgin opera’s most important patron, Stu Ainsworth. But she is limiting her new Board of Directors to a small close-knit group of loyal friends, for whom she still plays the lead. Reflecting on her career, she said “I could have stayed in the chorus. But I find it boring. You can’t be as artistic, you can’t use your soul.” She has made Elgin her home and given it her life’s work, evolving from soloist to sole executive. “I’m here. I’m not going anywhere anymore. And as I get older, I’m just going to make everybody else sing.” —JP

Billings Summary for November

Get to Know Your ESO!

Bach to Basics

November 3 Inside the Music with Andrew Grams & the ESO Music Director Andrew Grams

For the Old Tymers

Elgin Master Chorale

Thinking back in time when those of the early Senior generation were much younger and the only form of entertainment prior to early television was the family radio which usually sat in the living room where most or all of the family members would gather around on a given evening and listen to the latest episodes of some of the greatest programs ever created. Titles like The Green Hornet, Fibber Magee and Molly, The Jack Benny Show, The Red Skelton Show, Amos and Andy and many more bring thoughts of good clean fun that carried a message or were just plain gutbusting funny!

EMC opens its season with Bach’s Magnificat as well as his beloved Ein feste Burg, in recognition of the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation. These works stem from man’s desire to connect more closely with the divine, and have proved transformational since their creation. Opening the concert will be the Elgin Master Chorale Children’s Chorus, performing pieces by Bach as well as other composers, all beautiful examples of the inspiration music can provide to the soul.

Elgin Theatre Company is going to bring you the holiday versions of just three of these wonderful programs so that you can kick off the holiday season with a bit of good “Old Tyme Nostalgia”. Interspersed with the actual programs themselves will be some Elgin Watch Company and other merchant commercials from this era that actually were presented on the radio at that time during commercial breaks in the actual story line from these scripts. Live actors will be on stage doing the various voice parts of the characters that you once loved in years past. Sound effects will also be created right before your eyes so that you can sit back and feel like you are back home in your family living room as a young person, enjoying these all over again! The shows are Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm, from Nov. 10-19 at the Elgin Art Showcase. Reserve your tickets by phone at (847) 741-0532 or by email to tickets@ inil.com.

The Elgin Master Chorale Children’s Chorus will once again be opening the concert. The group, formed in 2016, brings together young singers from all over the Fox Valley to make beautiful music, form lasting friendships, and start a lifelong love of singing. The EMC Children’s Chorus performs several times a year alongside the Elgin Master Chorale, and also goes out into Elgin neighborhoods and beyond, teaching its young singers the value and joy of serving your community through song. We invite you to experience the EMC Children’s Chorus, and celebrate the bright future ahead. The concert will be held Sunday afternoon, November 12th at Blizzard Theatre at the ECC Arts Center. Advance tickets are available at (847) 622-0300 or at tickets.elgin.edu.

Appalachian Christmas Quartet In 1997, the Appalachian Christmas Quartet was born of a very simple set of ideas: Gather a few diverse musicians to play, well, Christmas music; bring in whatever instruments are available (this is the Appalachian idea!); even if there are a TON of instruments, the group is small; and the kicker-the players can’t just play their own “specialty” instrument. Everybody HAS to branch out into new territory as a musician! Sure there were a few rough patches (ask one of the members about the band’s very first gig!), but look at where it’s lead: four studio albums, one live album, more than eleven years of performing, hundreds (maybe thousands) of fans spread across the country, and probably a gazillion shirts with the picture of Master, Maestro, Herr Direktor, or Meister Jack, Esq. on ‘em. Sure, ACQ brings more than a hundred instruments to their shows. Sure, they can play them all. Yes, they are only “a band” for two or three weeks (sometimes just a single week!) a year. And, yes, they can all dance like the wind. Really, it’s more than a show: it’s a collection of talented musicians doing exactly what they love and creating an amazing experience in the meantime. The ACQ will perform multiple shows at Westridge Community Church (3300 Encounter Lane, 847-488-1800) and St. Thomas More Catholic Church (215 Thomas More Drive, 847888-1682) in Elgin on November 29, 30 and December 1st. An Elgin Old Tyme Holiday Radio Show The Elgin Theatre Company begins its 2017-2018 season with its production of An Elgin Old Tyme Holiday Radio Show. ETC brings to life radio shows as they really were. This presentation features three radio shows: Archie Andrew's Christmas Shopping, Fibber Paints a Christmas Tree White, and a radio version of Miracle on 34th Street.

Archie Andrew's Christmas Shopping – Mass confusion results when Archie, his parents and all his friends go Christmas shopping at the same time in the same department store.

The Mersey Beatles The Mersey Beatles are an all-Liverpool-born Beatles tribute band and the house band for over a decade at the world-famous Cavern Club, where the Beatles got their start. These lads

grew up as childhood friends and schoolmates, just like the Beatles! Since 1999, the band has played sellout shows in more than 20 countries, recreating The Beatles’ most popular hits. The Mersey Beatles recreate the Beatles’ image and sound with amazing accuracy using replica Hofner, Rickenbacker and Gretsch guitars and VOX and Ludwig gear. Natural, vibrant and funny, these talented musicians bring the sound and image of the Fab Four to The Hemmens Cultural Center. In honor of the 50th anniversary of “Sgt. Pepper’s”, they’ll be re-creating that landmark album in full, along with favorites from every Beatles era, including four costume changes and authentic Liverpool accents, wit and charm. Come see why John Lennon’s sister, the director of the Cavern Club, says, “There are a lot of Beatles tribute bands from all over the world, and I’ve seen them all, but The Mersey Beatles are the most authentic I have heard.” VIP tickets available that include Premier Seating; CD Download; Meet & Greet with The Mersey Beatles. Just Like Us ECC Theatre presents Just Like Us by Karen Zacarias November 3-12. Based on Helen Thorpe’s bestselling book, this documentary-style play follows four Latina teenage girls in Denver — two of whom are undocumented. The girls’ close-knit friendships begin to unravel when immigration status dictates their opportunities (or lack therof). When a political firestorm arises, each girl’s future becomes increasingly complicated. Just Like Us poses difficult yet essential questions about what makes us American. The production is directed by Susan A. Robinson.

ART The Janus Theatre Company kicks-off its 19th season Inspired By‚Ķ This project presents three plays that explore and attempt to understand through theater the creation, debate, and removal of the mural “American Nocturne” in Elgin during 2016. This project approaches the subject of art and culture in the community by asking three questions separately in each of the plays: What is art? Why do we make art? How do we talk about race? The season opens asking: What is art and is explored through the play “Art” by Yasmina Reza, playing at the Elgin Artspace Lofts, November 10-19. The play asks: How much would you pay for a white painting? Would it matter who the painter was? Would it be art? One of Marc’s best friends, Serge, has just bought a very expensive painting. It’s all white with some faint white diagonal lines. To Marc, the painting is a joke, but Serge insists Marc doesn’t have the proper standard to judge the work. Another friend, Ivan, though burdened by his own problems, allows himself to be pulled into this disagreement and proclaims he likes the painting. This sets off a fierce debate over the canvas, using it as an excuse to relentlessly attack one another and test their friendship. The production features Justin Schaller and Michael Wagman. The play is produced and directed by Sean Hargadon. Stage Managed by Tara Morrison. Tech Direction by Andy Murschel. Art Direction by Erin Conroy. Tue.Nov.14 Positive Impact Fox Valley Book Club “Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon — the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations. A feel-good story in the spirit of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, Fredrik Backman’s novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. Mitch McVicker in Elgin, IL Mitch McVicker’s career began in 1995 and has since spanned 10 albums and a DVD, a single on a compilation, appearance as himself and music in the closing credits in the movie “Ragamuffin”, and over 1800 concerts in 49 states and 13 countries. His career began in support of the late, great Rich Mullins. They traveled, performed, wrote and lived together, and shortly after the accident that took Rich’s life and badly injured Mitch, while Mitch was still deep in a lengthy and difficult recovery period, the two were awarded a GMA Dove award for the song “My Deliverer”. After his recovery Mitch began his own musical journey, influenced by Rich in music and thought, yet distinctly in his own voice and style. 9a, TBC mitchmcvicker.com

Grove Ave. 847.742.2411 gailborden.info Screening of “Heroes on Deck” Heroes on Deck tells the little-known story of a bold and innovative response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Following that catastrophic event, the U.S. Navy was desperate for aircraft carrier-qualified pilots. With enemy submarines patrolling both coasts, a radical idea was proposed: Why not train pilots in the safety of Lake Michigan? Two Great Lakes passenger steamers were immediately converted into makeshift aircraft carriers, the USS Wolverine and USS Sable. Between 1942 and the end of the war, more than 15,000 aviators - including future President George H.W. Bush -- were trained aboard these “freshwater flattops.” Crashes and “water landings” often led to serious injuries and occasionally death. As a result, more than one hundred fighters and dive-bombers sank to the bottom of the lake. To date, more than 40 aircraft have been brought to the surface. Heroes on Deck captures some of the key recoveries and restoration efforts, celebrates the stories of the brave pilots who survived this ingenious training operation and brings to life a vital chapter of American history. Narrated by legendary CBS and A&E newsman Bill Kurtis, Heroes on Deck: World War II on Lake Michigan, played nationally on PBS last Memorial Day. Harvey Moshman, Executive Producer of the film, will be here to discuss the film and take your questions! Harvey Moshman is a multi-Emmy Award winning producer and editor. He is also an accomplished diver and recently completed a national documentary on the discovery of a missing WWII American submarine, lost for more than 60 years that was found on the bottom of the Gulf of Thailand with its crew of 86 entombed on board. His next project is a documentary of Chicago’s worst tragedy in terms of lives lost when the SS Eastland rolled over, killing 844 people while still tied to the Clark Street dock. On the lighter side, Harvey is the producer of the offbeat Public Television series, WILD TRAVELS. Registration. 7p-8.30p, GBPL Meadows Comm. Rms. A-B, 270 N. Grove Ave. 847.742.2411 gailborden.info

Fri.Nov.24 Intimate Evening with Muriel Anderson One of the world’s foremost fingerstyle guitarists and harp-guitarists, Muriel Anderson is the first woman to have won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship. She appears on the cover of Classical Guitar Magazine, Spring 2017, and concurrently in main feature stories in Guitar Player Magazine and Acoustic Guitar Magazine. Her recent CD “Nightlight Daylight” has won top honors in 11 national awards. She has performed/recorded with Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Victor Wooten and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. Her obvious joy of music, humor and her facility across the genres of folk, clas-

sical, jazz, bluegrass and international music is revered by guitarists worldwide. An engaging performer, Muriel’s unique approach to the instrument virtually transforms the guitar into a lyrical choir, then a marching band, then a Japanese koto, then a Bluegrass band, one minute launching into a Beatles’ tune and the next, a Rodrigo concerto. Her video “Why Worry” has garnered a total of over 8 million views. Muriel is host of the renowned Muriel Anderson’s ALL STAR GUITAR NIGHT¬Æ and founder of the MUSIC FOR LIFE ALLIANCE charity. In addition, her new program “Wonderlust” is highlighted by a backdrop of stunning visuals by celebrated photo-artist Bryan Allen. 7p-10p, Art Area Studio 51 Cafe, Spring St at Fulton St 847.356.8686. $25.00 Hambones One of the biggest bar nights of the year, the night after Thanksgiving. From This River Town AT E ST R EET T S MARKET SHOPS

Relying on the Segue by Mary Ellen Goodwill

“The thoughts you think will irradiate you as though you are a transparent vase.” —Maurice Maeterlinck When I was a high school English teacher and had my own classroom, I would write a “quote of the day” on the blackboard to the far right and draw a vertical line to separate it from anything else that might be put on the board. The students quickly became accustomed to seeing the quotes and they invariably read each one. Some copied them down in their notebooks. Usually the words had something to do with the lesson but not always. For instance, John Madden’s “The offensive lineman, when he’s happy, he just gives a good spit” did not in any way relate to the latest chapter from A Tale of Two Cities. Nor did Jimmy Buffet’s “Chew a little Juicy Fruit, it’s good for the soul” fit with any scene from Ibsen’s A Doll’s House. Something I heard on NPR while driving to school or a lyric

from an album I had been listening to the night before could end up on the board. Anything from The Great Thoughts (George Seldes, ed.), from gift books, from my fat file of accumulated quotes was fair game. It was not unusual for us to get so involved in discussing the quote that little time was left for the lesson. That was a gift if we were practicing pronoun/antecedent agreement with indefinite pronouns. For example, the fact that everyone is singular required trust on the students’ part and often a quick finesse to whatever quote was on the board, possibly, “Which of all my important nothings shall I tell you first?” (Jane Austen) Talking about our own important nothings easily garnered more interest than the fact that all can be singular or plural as seen in these two examples: All of the pizza is cold and all of the children are cold. Important nothings. Sometimes we would bargain. Let’s say the quote was “...expecting the men you love and who love you to work actively to make

the world safe for women ...“ (Kay Leigh Hagan) and the lesson was placing commas after introductory dependent clauses. The class period was fifty minutes long. I would suggest thirty-five minutes on the commas and clauses and any remaining time on the quote. From a seat in the back I would hear the suggestion, “Twenty minutes.” Then, “Fifteen minutes.” Then, “Let’s do the quote first and see how long it lasts.” Delicious days saw one fine mornin’ I’m gonna reach up and grab me a handfulla stars (from “To Satch” by Samuel Allen) intertwined with a story about a lonely young boy who discovers his musical talent by learning to play the harmonica. Or listening to a Paul Simon tape while editing our poetry notebooks. On the board: “He obviously hadn’t begun to think of himself as a metaphor.” This was Paul Simon’s reaction after Joe Dimaggio told him, “What I don’t get is that you ask where I’ve gone.” As to the words from Maeterlinck at the start of this column, I can still see the freshman girl coming into the classroom, standing in front of the board and reading that quote. She turned beet red, covered her face with her notebook and retreated to her seat where she did her very best to become invisible. Miss Goodwill’s novels are available at Gail Borden and E.C.C. libraries, Town House Books in St. Charles and on Amazon.

Your mother or grandmother considered it a rare luxury to eat fresh fruit out of season. That’s why a fresh orange was considered a precious gift to receive in a Christmas stocking.

food-buying preferences involve more than just price, availability and calorie content. A whole host of ideologies now drive consumer preferences for a growing segment of grocery shoppers.

Consumer demand coupled with technology has made it possible to eat fresh produce in any season, even if it has to be transported half way around the world.

Fresh food is widely considered to be healthier. Dan Klein of Klein’s Quality Produce explained, “We pick our sweet corn seven days a week, and only display the corn we picked that day. Other produce like tomatoes, peppers and melons are allowed to ripen on the vine and brought directly to the public. This lets the vegetables get to their pieak flavor and nutrient level as opposed to being picked early and ripening in a box.”

“Food has become a monopolized commodity with profits first and quality second,” says Dorothy Turay of Elgin. Outof-season produce has to come from another latitude, which involves long distance transport, which requires premature harvesting and chemical defenses against pests and spoilage. The increased costs and downward price pressure means the food quality suffers. Turay is a shareholder in Shared Harvest, the Elgin Food Cooperative, whose goal is to establish a locally owned and community-governed grocery store that offers organic local foods and products.

The modern era of food co-ops dates to the 1970’s, when groups of baby boomers in college towns sought to assert local control of their food systems by pooling their labor and resources to create a store whose products reflected their values. The co-op was as much an anti-corporate statement as it was a health-consciousness movement. Today’s food co-ops are now a magnet for anyone whose

Attention to health also fuels the growing resistance to engineered foods and synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. The agricultural industry developed those tools to increase yields, preserve product longer and lower costs, but consumers are now willing to pay more for foods from certified organic farms that eschew these practices. “Animal welfare is important to me,” wrote Elizabeth M. Her attitudes are consistent with a growing number of buyers who insist on cage-free eggs, freerange pastured meats and other cruelty-free foods. Some say they can taste the difference, but a clean conscience is just as important.

like packaging, distribution networks, wages and business practices across the food industry. Elgin resident James Pirovano summed it up nicely in saying, “A grocery co-op offers a better opportunity for knowing where your food comes from and whether it has a positive or negative affect on health, communities, economies, and natural resources.” Access is also top of mind. “Elgin is such a vibrant and diverse city,” says Jennifer Bowden. “The one thing that was missing was a source for local and organic foods. I know that some carfree famililes are finding their way to Elgin and the downtown will be even better with a source of fresh, organic groceries.” Katie McNamara expressed the hope that she can “buy within my community and keep my carbon footprint small.” It touches on a common theme of local economic development that is thought to align favorably with a small-scale, local food system. But the term “local” is relative. “Grocery stores are allowed

to advertise ‘local’ produce as long as it is within a three-state radius,” said Dan Klein. At the Downtown Elgin Harvest Market, Rob Murphy of Curds & Whey defined “local” as within 200 miles of Elgin. The food business in particular seems to struggle with these labeling problems, at least in the minds of critical consumers. “I can’t justify paying two or more times the cost just for the something with the label ‘organic,’ which I don’t even believe half the time,” said Brianne Murphy. “I’m a label reader and am appalled at the widespread use of GMO [genetically-modified organism] food items,” said Dorothy Turay. “The description on the label says ‘partially produced with genetic engineering,’ a sneaky way to avoid the ‘GMO’ tag.” Corporatization seems to breed distrust, even in the organic grocery niche. “The Amazon buyout of Whole Foods just further disconnects me from them as a trusted supplier,” says Ryne

Mitchell. “I really like the idea of directly participating in the support of a local food co-op.”

To Market To Market Trust is key to Klein’s Quality Produce, as Dan Klein says, “Our customers feel safe knowing exactly where their food is coming from ... just a few miles away.” According to the Illinois Farm Bureau, Klein’s is somewhat typical for the state. As of 2017, 86% of Illinois farms are family-owned, 62% are smaller than 180 acres, and 58% are owner-operated. With each passing generation, some Illinois families leave farming and sell to another local farmer, creating a consolidation effect, but there are still over 72,000 farms in the state producing every type of fruit, vegetable and animal product. A 2013 Health Impact Assessment published by Kane County suggested enhancements to public policy that would encourage local agriculture and improve access to local produce for commercial and institutional markets. One of the recommendations was to create a food hub in the county — a centralized cleaning, packaging and distribution facility — to incent local farmers to produce more by providing off-farm processing. Elgin’s PKE Enterprises, run by entrepreneur Kevin Echevarria, was selected this year by the County as the food hub operator. The plans call for his Shared Dream Kitchen on Fleetwood Avenue to be expanded to house food processing operations. The new entity will also coordinate logistics, “working with farmers and producers to plan crop planting and harvesting, truck the foods to the plant for preparation and create the wholesale channels to sell the produce,” according to an unofficial press release. It’s an explosive new growth of Echevarria’s Dream family of businesses that now includes

commercial kitchens, branding services, co-working space, entrepreneurial education, and is set to encompass retailing, hospitality and financial ventures. And it could be a great leap forward in Kane County “food equity,” a term meaning fair and equitable control of local production and trade of healthful, affordable and culturally significant foods. That will involve consumer education, something that gains the support of Sue Manago, an Elgin educator, enthusiastic co-op shareowner and investor.

The Grass Route Historically, Illinois “food equity” has always been found in the gardens and barnyards of families who raised and grew their own provisions. The renewed interest in community gardens, backyard chicken coops and apiaries is evidence of the enduring wisdom of “growing your own.” “We grow the majority of what we eat, which technically would be locally sourced and organic,” says Brianne Murphy. “We also buy a whole cow — chickens and pork — and have it delivered throughout the year.” The trends in food have by no means gone unnoticed by corporate stores like Jewel-Osco, Meijer and Aldi, where you’ll find increasing space devoted to produced labeled “local” and “organic.” We reached out to Aldi’s PR office, but they did not respond. Perhaps they could have found time to answer our questions if we had the circulation numbers of Rolling Stone. But we found more than enough material for this story among the people we serve, a story about food systems built like our magazine, from the bottom up. “I believe long-term sustainability will be driven locally,” says Ryne Mitchell. “And I don’t need a drone to deliver a pizza to me, really.”  —JP
