by Emma Marston There’s a misconception, even among intellectuals, that a museum is a place where culture goes after it dies. If you look at museums this way, you see only archives, artifacts, photographs and histories. They might seem like the estates and obituaries of dead animals, human societies and art forms. However, museums are actually vibrant hubs of creativity. Exhibits are a combination of storytelling and visual design. Managing collections and conducting research often involve solving problems that have never been confronted before. The publishing projects and field work of museums preserve culture in part by recreating it, and their educational programs help define a community’s identity by connecting past, present and future.

Elgin History Museum The Elgin History Museum is dedicated to bringing Elgin’s rich history to life, going beyond traditional exhibits to celebrate and preserve Elgin’s history in the community.

Similar structure is evident in living organisms, crystals and ecosystems. As you look at the big picture at the start of the new year, what will you focus on? Instances or patterns? Individuals or collectives? Innovation or repetition?

The Museum is housed in a beautiful 1856 Greek Revival style building known as Old Main. Inside, visitors can experience a number of exhibits that reflect Elgin’s history from the days of early settlers through 20th century events. Permanent exhibits include display on the Elgin National Watch Company, the E. Maude and Carl Parlasca Native American Collection, and memorabilia from the Elgin Road Races. The museum also features a number of temporary exhibits that give visitors a more indepth look at aspects of Elgin’s history. Current temporary exhibits on display include Madman Muntz: Pop History Icon, which highlights the life of well-known entrepreneur and Elginite Earl Muntz, and Elgin American Compacts: Designing for American 1926 – 1951, which shows off the artistry and craftsmanship behind the Elgin American brand of compacts that were once manufactured in the city. Throughout the year, the Museum hosts a wide variety of programs and events that are open to the community, such as lectures and talks about local history, the annual Cemetery Walk, and the Classic Car Show.

Source: elginhistory.org for research and genealogy, and the Reber Research Library on the third floor of the museum also contains most Elgin histories, business directories, phone books, and memoirs. All of these activities are supported by a dedicated group of staff members, volunteers, board members, and other supporters, as Board Treasurer George Rowe knows well. “The Elgin History Museum isn’t based on the work of just one or two people: it’s the support from our entire board and everyone else working with us, that is critical to the museum’s success.” Rowe says. For many museums, creating and maintaining so many valuable resources would be enough, but the Elgin History Museum has worked hard over the years to go beyond the walls of Old Main, working to support Elgin’s history directly in the community.

Recent projects have included the relocation and restoration of a long-forgotten urban Elgin windmill, the creation of a new historic bungalow district in the city, and the award-winning Project 2-3-1 documentary and accompanying exhibit, which tells the story of the first African-Americans in Elgin. There are other community projects in the works, such as Dairies to Prairies, the story of Elgin’s dairy heritage, which will be presented through a feature-length documentary and companion traveling exhibit.

The Museum is also working to preserve the Nancy Kimball Cobblestone House, the oldest cobblestone house in Elgin that was built in 1846. This project is an example of architectural preservation of unique buildings, but also highlights adaptive re-use: when complete, the building will have a new future as a gallery space, work room, and meeting space for a number of community organizations.

“When we started, Old Main and the museum itself were at the center of our organization. And over time, as we continued to develop exhibits and other experiences at the museum, we started to look outside the museum and think about how we could best bring the museum and Elgin’s history out into the community.” Museum exhibits combine storytelling with design. Rowe says. Source: elginhistory.org

Elgin Public Museum When visitors walk into the Elgin Public Museum, most people are immediately drawn to the beautiful Neo-Classical architecture of the building – and the gigantic, beautiful Irish steer and the other taxidermied animals that preside over the lobby. The museum has an impressive history: the building was first built in 1907 to house Mr. and Mrs. George P. Lord’s extensive natural history collection, and later became the home of the Elgin Audubon Society before becoming the Elgin Public Museum. The building itself has been recognized by the National Registry of Historic Places, and the Elgin Public Museum is now the oldest building in Illinois built expressly as a museum that is still serving that purpose. While there have been several renovations over the years, most notably the east wing that was added in 2000, visitors can still experience the beautiful and original oak woodwork, plaster wall ornamentation, and ceramic tile floors. Reflecting the long history of the building, most of the Elgin Public Museum’s collection consists of the taxidermy collections of Mr. Lord and the Audubon Society, as well as other natural history objects that have been collected over the years like Native American artifacts, fossils, and even a mammoth skull.

In addition to the more exotic animals on display, the museum is currently planning several renovations that will focus more on the Fox River Valley area with local animals and habitats.

“The more you learn about the area you live in, and the more you’re exposed to it, the more you appreciate it and nature in general,” says Sara Russell, Museum Coordinator. “Knowing about the world around us gives us roots that we can connect with, and there’s always something new to learn and appreciate.” While visitors are welcome to explore the museum on their own time, the Elgin Public Museum also offers a variety of programs that give visitors the chance to ask questions and learn about natural history up close, getting a unique look at the collection with special hands-on items like a giant bison horn, a real mammoth tooth, and even a full-sized stuffed barn owl. The programs cover everything from anthropology to ecology and zoology, and visitors of all ages are invited to come. “I’m always learning new

Chief John Fahy and current Chief David Schmidt both serve on the Museum’s board. “We would not be able to function without their backing and support,” says Dave Betts, the Secretary for the museum’s Board of Directors. “[President] James Carrigan and I both have a passion for history, and this building serves as a testimonial to the men and women who have served at this station over the years, as well as our board and the city of Elgin that help us to run this museum.” Even though the Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 was built in 1903, it represents recent history as well, as the station remained in operation until 1991.

Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 Museum The Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 Museum displays and interprets the history of firefighting around Elgin, but for many people, the museum represents more than just long-ago names and dates. The Museum is entirely run and supported by volunteers, and new volunteers are always welcome. The Museum also has a close relationship with the current Elgin Fire Department: many retired firemen and their families have donated their time and artifacts to the museum, and former Elgin Fire Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 Museum. The Museum is set up much like the station would have been when it was active, with displays highlighting the complex mechanical switchboard systems used before computers, wooden lockers showing where firefighting gear was stored, a living area on the second floor with a living room, bunk room, and the captain’s quarters, and of course, metal poles for firefighters to quickly make it downstairs in case of a fire. The Museum’s extensive collection includes three fully working fire engines, including the original rotary steam engine purchased by the city in 1869; hat badges, uniforms, tools, and other firefighting gear; and various fire extinguishers and chemical extinguishers. However, the building itself might be the most impressive part of the collection: it was built at a time when

fire engines operated on actual horsepower, and much of the building has remained intact over the years, with just minor changes. “This museum reminds us of what was here, and what is to come,” Betts says. “To be the curator of a museum that belongs to Elgin’s history, and the history of firefighting – that’s really cool.”

Dundee Township Historical Society For local residents, the Dundee Township Historical Society is an invaluable source of local history. Established in the 1970s, the Historical Society has preserved and cared for over a hundred years of history centered around the people, places, businesses, and more that have left their mark on the area over the years.

Many of the families mentioned in exhibits or the Historical Society’s records still live in the Township, and the Society even keeps a special section of “people files” in its archives so that information on individuals can be quickly located for family members, genealogists, and any other interested residents. Inside the Historical Society, one area features permanent displays about all aspects of the township’s history, from the pre-settler days to handicrafts, tools, and toys owned by early residents to local organizations and businesses like the Dundee Ice Company. Of special note is an exhibit featuring the famous detective Allan Pinkerton, who made his home in Dundee Township in 1843. Another area is reserved for temporary exhibits that spotlight topics of local interest, like the upcoming Haeger in Dundee: 1871-2016 exhibit on Haeger Potteries that’s slated to open in March 2017. However, the Historical Society is also an important resource for local historians and genealogists, with a well-stocked library and archives on the second floor. The collection includes books and works by local writers, newspapers, pictures, and important documents like census records. Some of these records date as far back as the Civil War, like the Civil War regiment lists for the township area. “Our museum saves things that would

If you don’t know where you come from, you don’t know where you’re going,” says Marge Edwards, the Historical Society’s President. “I’ve been here thirty two years, and I still learn something new every time I come to the museum.”

Fox River Trolley Museum In most museums, visitors interact with history in a very static way, learning about history by looking at displays or reading exhibit panels. The Fox River Trolley Museum does things a little differently, however. The museum invites visitors to explore the unique history of American electric trolley

with the idea of “Education Through Demonstration.” While trolleys might be new to some visitors, trolley tracks once connected Carpentersville, Elgin, South Elgin, Saint Charles, and other Fox River Valley communities. The museum operates a variety of antique trolley cars, and visitors can buy a ticket to take an authentic four mile round trip along the banks of the Fox River and experience the sights, sounds, and sensation of what it would have been like when the trolleys were in service. The museum boasts a fully operational electric rail line and a variety of authentic cars from the Fox River area that were built between 1902 and 1959 in addition to a more traditional museum exhibit area. The 120 year old electric rail system itself

is just as historic as the trolley cars: it is the oldest operating railroad in Illinois. The trolley line goes through the Jon D. Duerr Forest Preserve that has picnicking facilities, offering a unique combination of recreation and education for visitors. “Our museum is very much oriented towards visitors and their families. The scale of the museum is designed to be a more much intimate experience for visitors as they go through the museum and ride the trains.” Edward Konecki, Museum President says. In addition to regularly scheduled operating hours, the museum also hosts a number of special events throughout the year. In June, the “Rails to Victory” Living History Reenactment commemorates the anniversary of World War II with an immersive experience that puts passengers at the center of

history during the trolley ride. There is also a special Ghost Story Train in October, and the Polar Express in December celebrating seasonal holidays in family-friendly ways. Like many other museums in the area, the Fox River Trolley Museum and its collection are fully maintained and operated by volunteers, and the museum is always looking for new volunteers who would like to help out.

Don’t Give the IRS More than you Should... Seek Professional Tax Advice! Who will prepare your 2016 tax return in the 2017 tax season? Is it time for a change? • Are you tired of preparing your own taxes, and finding it more difficult and time consuming? FLP Tax Service saves you time, money, and aggravation. Is your old tax preparer hard to reach and never returns phone calls, during and after tax season? FLP Tax Service staff answers phone and email messages within 48 hours, even after April 15th. • Are you paying high fees that are constantly increasing, even if your tax returns get easier and are less complicated? FLP fees are based not by the number of tax forms it prints, but on the complexity of your return. Fees are reviewed annually, and adjusted as needed. • Is your tax preparer not up to speed with the tax laws or tax software technology? FLP tax preparers are continually attending tax update schools to earn continuing education credit, to be ready prior to the start of each new tax season. Does your preparer offer three ways to get your taxes done? 1. By scheduling a sit down interactive tax appointment. Taxes are typically completed within a 1 1/2 hr. appointment or sooner, depending on whether you brought all your info. 2. By remote tax processing. Get your taxes done without leaving your home. Remote tax preparation is available using a state of the art secure web based portal system. Scan and upload your documents over the FLP Secure File portal. No need to get out of the house. Phone interviews are done at a convenient time (for you) to finish your return. 3. By mailing your tax info or by dropping it off. We will process it quickly, and before it’s completed, you will be contacted to make sure that you agree with the results. Note: you will always get to speak with a live tax preparer to complete your taxes. FLP Tax Service is a home-based business, celebrating 11 years of providing personal and accurate tax preparation. Our fees are typically one third or less than CPA firms and Franchise Tax Firms. Low overhead keeps our fees down. FLP is a Member of the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce (EAC), for 11 years, and Member of the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP), for 20 years. You will get a 100% Client Guarantee of Satisfaction. There never are any extra charges for e-filing, IRS direct deposits, or copies of your tax returns (paper or pdf). Please contact us to make your appointment, call 847-608-0547 office, fax, 847-289-9808, email richkruth@richkruth.com, visit our website www.richkruth.com

By studying and working hard, the Sauceda children achieved great success in business, education and the professions in Elgin and beyond. Jessie’s courageous and outspoken defense of North American values are still a source of continuous inspiration to a new generation of leaders integrating Latino culture into Elgin society through education, service, faith and custom.

She impressed that upon her own children, and gave them daily homework even when no assignments were given at school. As the children matured, the Latino families at St. Joseph’s started calling a priest to give an early morning mass for the Virgin of Guadalupe. They would eventually form Club Guadalupano as a vehicle for their social life and and a network of mutual assistance in hard times. After 64 years, the Club now provides higher education scholarships to Latino students, thanks to Jessie’s influence.

She married another Mexican immigrant, Juan “John” Sauceda at age fifteen, and raised seven children in Elgin during a time of harsh prejudice. The Saucedas were part of a small, close-knit group of MexicanAmerican families who created a sense of community that was not afforded to them by the Anglos.

The first Mexican immigrants arrived in Elgin in the early 1920’s, following a period of violent revolution and civil war in their home country. Among them were Sostenes and Tomasa Valdivia and their daughter Jessie. After traveling 1600 miles and arriving by rail, they were among the first families who settled in a cluster of shacks along the Fox River’s west bank north of town, an area which became known as “Mexico City.” EM

Elgin Alive - Movie: Bikes vs. Cars (2015, NR) Americans use bicycles in the same situation they use any other tool: whenever it’s the right tool for the job. These days, lots of U.S. cities and towns are trying to make bicycles a more useful and appealing tool. But people sometimes forget that the best way to do this is to make bicycles a useful tool for many jobs ‘ not just commuting to work. From bike activists in Sao Paulo and Los Angeles, fighting for safe bike lanes, to the City of Copenhagen, where forty percent commute by bike daily, Bikes vs. Cars will look at both the struggle for bicyclists in a society dominated by cars, and the revolutionary changes that could take place if more cities moved away from car-centric models. Shared Values: An Arty Appetite

Demand About Town What makes a community arts-friendly? It’s more than just affordable housing, public transportation, cheap studio space and abundant sources of material. It’s an ongoing demand for art.

media. Shows are professionally staged in the SSSA Gallery, complete with opening reception and media coverage. Join their mailing list or become a member to get regular requests to show your work.

Every month new artists of all kinds find themselves here. Some are professionals who just moved into the area. Others are exercising a hidden talent that was undeveloped during many years of focusing on family or career. Still others are first discovering an artistic gift and passion with the help of an inspiring teacher. We’ve met many of them in the pages of BRAVO.

Even if you don’t have a collection to show, you can participate in Ultimate Painting, the wildly popular live painting competition hosted annually at SSSA. They are always looking for painters willing to work in front of an audience.

Fortunately for this community, there is a steady demand for artists and art product in all media. Somewhere nearby, sometime soon, you’ll be invited to submit a photo or a painting, try out for a show, or audition for an ensemble, and we provide complete contact information here for your convenience.

Visual Arts Once every summer, the streets of downtown Elgin are lined with painters, sculptors, photographers and other artists, gathered for the annual juried art fair “Art & Soul on the Fox.” Planned and run by fellow artists of the non-profit Art for All Elgin, this event attracts high quality work from many miles away. The only reason you wouldn’t exhibit at this show is if everyone in Elgin has already seen your work, so get your application in before February 28 for this summer’s event. The call for visual art goes out at least once a month from Side Street Studio Arts (SSSA), whose series of themed exhibits welcome a broad variety of

A few of your best paintings are always welcome at the eclectic Art Area Studio 51 gallery, which welcomes direct artist involvement in exhibits and events. For those with an oeuvre that needs a whole gallery to itself, the Seigle Gallery at Elgin Artspace Lofts is looking for you. Produce your own show in this top-notch modern exhibit space with excellent amenities. Visitors stop in daily expecting to see art on the walls -- don’t let them down.

Theatre The theater groups of Elgin are busy year round, and are always looking for new faces and voices for roles on stage or behind the scenes. Elgin Theatre Company puts out casting calls all over the region, but only Elgin actors and crew have the luxury of rehearsing and performing in their own city. Many of their shows are ambitious enough to have many small parts available in addition to leading roles. The Independent Players and Janus Theatre Company thrive on the talents of their resident actors but are continually introducing new players and materi-

al. Even if you didn’t catch their open auditions, just reach out and create your own entrance. The biggest stage in Elgin is host to an annual summer production which is open for anyone to try out. Elgin Summer Theatre is currently planning its 2017 show for the Hemmens Main Stage, and may need actors, singers, dancers and/or musicians. Is that you? Get this on your radar fast! Following close behind on the theatre timeline is the Elgin Fringe Festival, a four-day celebration of all kinds of performance. There are no auditions, no jury, just an open application process for comedy, dance, drama, music or something completely different. They start setting the lineup in the Spring, so get your act together now.

Concert Music We estimate there are more musicians in Elgin than any other kind of artist, and more musical opportunities as well. The Judson Civic Orchestra is always seeking instrumentalists--especially strings--to take on their classical repertoire in weekly rehearsals and annual concerts that aspire to professional quality. Sit in with the group a few times and then earn a seat for yourself. Though most of us won’t win an audition for the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, we can practice with many of their artists in the studios of Elgin Community College’s music department. Besides private individual instruction for adults, there are jazz and wind ensembles that perform regularly at the Blizzard Theatre, where national touring acts and legendary artists also frequently grace the stage. Children and youth can do no better than play for the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra, the region’s finest program for cultivating young musical talent. This professionally staffed organization holds auditions in summer for its multiple performing groups. If your voice is your instrument, answer the call for singers with the Elgin Master Chorale. Bring a prepared piece of music (three copies please), and demonstrate your sight reading and intonation in a ten minute audition, available by appoint-

ment. Elgin’s chamber choir, the Heartland Voices, also seeks new singers for all sections with an audition by appointment. Both of these outstanding choral groups perform alone or jointly with the area’s finest professional instrumentalists.

Ken Bruderle Stays on TOP of the Real Estate Market

There is yet another group of elite vocalists which you might aspire to join. Soiree Lyrique is a collective of classical singers who perform a variety of material in unique concerts, often with chamber music accompaniment. The standards of this Elgin-based group are high enough to draw out the finest vocal artists from throughout Chicagoland.

for YOU! If you’re thinking of selling ...

before you commit, compare and discover how Ken Bruderle’s Superior Marketing Plan is designed to net you the highest price in the shortest period of time and least inconvenience for you.

Popular Music Little by little, the live band scene is building momentum in Elgin. On any given weekend, you’ll find the amps lit up on as many as six local stages. There’s always room in the music circuit for great local talent--just get your demo recording finished at one of the excellent and affordable studios here, and take your live show to the next level right in front your hometown fans. If you need a personal invitation, here’s one: your presence is requested on stage NOW at an Open Mic Night near you. And here’s another one for later: sign up for the summer Battle of the Bands at SSSA, where you’re guaranteed at least one gig, and if you’re the best, you might win a main stage appearance at Nightmare on Chicago Street. Prove us wrong!

Dance We are serious about dance in this town. Refining your talent at any of our excellent ballet/ modern/jazz/hip-hop dance studios will lead to company auditions, performances and competitions. Get your choreography ready for the dance-centric Going Dutch festival, which moves from Chicago to Elgin for the first time in 2017. If exotic and folkloric dance is what moves you, there’s a spot for you at La Grove Fatale (belly dance) or BFH (ballet folklorico Mexicano). Show these companies what you can do (or they’ll show you) and you could soon be seen on stage in Elgin or even on tour.

Elgin’s Superior Real Estate Expert! Literature We are amazed at the number of writer’s craft groups and critique clubs that meet up every month in the area. Your personal contributions would be prized by these poets, novelists and historians, and vice-versa. Once the last word has been written, several book publishing businesses in Elgin are ready to hear your pitch or read your manuscript, particularly material that’s of local interest. And your seat is waiting at the third annual Elgin Literary Festival, where your ideas and questions will enliven discussions with dozens of writers and publishers. If you prefer shorter forms, there’s BRAVO, a local culture magazine that is always in need of writers for assignments, or finished articles. This outfit also publishes an anthology of local poetry from time to time, and is part of a network of poetry boxes that are always hungry for fresh verse.

Other The opportunities described above should be enough to keep nearly a thousand artists busy,

yet still more outlets (or should we say inlets) exist for your talents in photography, music, filmmaking, writing, set design, sound design and more. The walls of Gail Borden Library are crying out for your visual art; the Zombie Defense Initiative wants your 3D design skills; the Elgin Short Film Festival wants your best digital short; Elgin iFest and Summer Music in the Parks have stages to fill; the Fourth of July Parade provides a huge audience; and almost every house of worship would thank God for your musical, dramatic, or design talents. Lest there be any doubt about the status of the arts here, the City of Elgin in its official capacity invites you to apply for a public grant of funds in support of a cultural arts project of your own design. Just complete an application from the City’s website. That’s putting dollars behind what is really a deeper demand that comes from the eyes, ears, and hearts and minds of all your neighbors, who want to connect with you on a higher level than just a common zip code. —JP
