Mt. Pocono’s Rise:

The Battle of The Fans “We’re not a cover band. We’re not a general rock ‘n’ roll band or have, you know, very popular influences. We’re a lot of smaller influences from a lot of different things and yet we can still draw the hundred plus people that were at Side Street the other night. I think the fact that this kind of scene gets that kind of reception is immense.” That was an assessment by Brandon Garlick, bassist and unofficial spokesman for Mt. Pocono, during a wide-ranging interview that explored the band’s back story, their creative process and the local music scene that developed around them. The four-piece band recently won the Battle of the Bands tournament hosted in downtown Elgin by Side Street Studio Arts, a contest in which two or more bands play a set on one night, and a winner is selected by popular vote among the fans who are present. Winners from early rounds go on to compete until a single champion is chosen.

Mt. Pocono played their fivesong set Saturday night, August 12th in a contest with Accidentally on Purpose, a six-member band with a completely different sound but near equal popularity. Both bands consist of musicians with deep roots in Elgin who joined together in different lineups mainly for this summer’s contest. Julian with Julian’s song. Photo by Roberto Martinez.

Band of Others It’s a familiar story in music circles, the one about the kid who was taught how to play an instrument because the band needed a bass player. “In freshman year of high school, I was given a guitar, a really cheapo one I still have. I was kind of self-taught to play,” Brandon recalled. That’s when two friends in Think Easy encouraged him to replace a recently expelled bassist by handing him an instrument and offering to teach him the rest. “I was kind of forced into playing bass, but I’ve been working on it for the last four plus years and I’m here now with these guys playing bass.” It was the summer of 2014, when

Em and Brandon. Photo by Roberto Martinez. Brandon attended the first Battle of the Bands as a fan, and saw a future band mate performing in their final contest. “I remember going to Oceans and Oceans’ final battle when they lost,” he recalled. “I was there not knowing what it was, what I was seeing. We were literally sitting on folding chairs that year. It was a small event, and it didn’t seem to be that serious that they had lost.” “I think that’s when Brandon became a familiar face,” added Julian Medriano, Mt. Pocono guitarist and member of Oceans and Oceans. “We started playing shows with him (and Think Easy) and it grew to be a very tight knit thing.”

Last year they brought in Emily Buttermore on guitar for more sonic layering options. “Having a fuller band, like four people, enhances the sound so dramatically, it’s crazy,” Julian observed. Emily — Em, as she’s known by the band — was no stranger to the Medrianos. She had known Julian since high school through mutual friends and had similar tastes in music. “What made me and Em’s friendship was like, ‘You like My Bloody Valentine? Awesome. You like Sonic Youth? Tight.’ We’re noise rockers.”

They’re referring to a period “when it was Think Easy and Oceans and Oceans as friends, as well as, we’re playing gigs together,” explained Brandon. “From there we just kept getting more intertwined once all of us got out of high school.” The Oceans were originally a three-piece sibling band consisting of Julian and his older brother Adrian on guitars and his sister Kristine on drums. They were champions of the 2015 Battle and appeared on the main stage at Nightmare on Chicago Street that October, wearing shark costumes.

Opportunity knocked in the form of multiple empty slots in Side Street’s upcoming Battle.

“I really wanted to start a new band that wasn’t with my brother and sister,” Julian confessed. “Because I always felt like I was in their shadow.” Fortunately, he had a long friendship with Jon Alvarado, a drummer with whom he had jammed and practiced as a duo for many years. “I guess I kinda like brought everyone together in a way.”

Uphill Battle For the next six months the quartet met almost every Tuesday night and Saturday morning to work things out. The instrumental side came more naturally at first, consisting of long jam sessions where the musicians would develop riffs into structures. “When it started it was a little rough at times,” admitted Brandon. “But jams are constantly improving, and we’re getting a lot better playing off each other.”

Brandon and Julian. Photo by Roberto Martinez.

The first song they finished was based on Brandon’s bass riff, to which lyrics were added by Julian. Like most of their material, it does not have a specific

title, in fact the band just calls it “Brandon’s song.” “We definitely focused on the music apsect first,” said Em, “the lyrics are always an afterthought,” to which Julian adds, “I’d say me and Em are more of the instrumental type ...” “I definitely come up with melodies and lyrics a lot easier than anything else,” Jon told us. I’ll have a melody in mind before I even pick up an instrument. I’ll just come up with something in my head.” The band’s title song, “Mt. Pocono,” was Jon’s contribution, based on a lonely visit to the resort town in Eastern Pennsylvania. “I rode the public bus around the the town and just noticed how sh*tty it was,” he remembered. “It was just sad, and really, really foggy, really hilly, a lot of forests ... but I liked the way it looked.” Coincidentally, Brandon visited the area early this summer and formed the same impression. “I agree with Jon, it’s not

the best area. It had mixed feelings of very poor and also very rich ... very nice golf courses, abandoned places, and resorts burned to the ground.” Known as the honeymoon capitol of the world in the forties and fifties, most people pronounce the name Mount PO-ka-no. The Elgin band pronounces it pa-KOno because that’s how Jon sings it. Brandon said repeatedly, “It just got more and more ironic as the summer progressed, the fact that we named the band that.”

Creating a Scene All of the band’s lyrics deal with the pain of isolation or uncertainty, broken relationships and coping mechanisms. They’re sad songs. Mt. Pocono disagrees on whether an “Elgin sound” can be defined, but Brandon suggests “the tone of the whole scene is sad music.” His reasoning is somewhat historical. “The tone is being set by the old bands that everyone learned in. The first big projects that happened in the local scene, at least for us, like Oceans and Oceans,

Think Easy and Home Burial, are now either disassembling or taking a step back to comprise new bands with different members who are redefining themselves out of the troubles of the past.” “There was this first wave of fans of the local scene and we feel kind of like there’s a second wave coming up and we’re part of that. I think so.” Em explained. “I think there’s totally a second wave of local bands coming out. It’s really cool.” The amazing thing about this continuing creative churn is that most of the upand-coming bands are playing original music and don’t appear on the local bar circuit. One reason is because a lot of the musicians and fans are under 21. Another is some bars require a minimum cover charge collected at the door (“pay to play”), and perhaps most of all, customers want to hear country, classic rock or R&B, not original stuff by local noise rockers. So the scene had to find a home elsewhere, literally speaking.

we had nine bands across two stages and about 200 plus people under one roof. We created this uprising of house shows.” These alternative venues are strictly DIY (“do it yourself”), and they write their own rules.

“I started hosting a house show at my place two years ago,” said Brandon. “We went on to build that bigger and bigger to where last December

Side Street Studio Arts has also championed the local music movement through numerous programs, not just Battle of the Bands. “Side Street has become a meeeting place where we all got connected,” emphasized Julian. “Our friends not only support the live shows, they come to, like, the random events ... they’re always down there now.” Brandon adds, “In a music scene that was hurting because we lost all the all-ages venues in the area, this is all we have.”

Brandon with Brandon’s song. Photo by Roberto Martinez.

Em observed, “All these bands literally built this scene from throwing DIY shows, through Side Street, from networking and allowing everybody to play, and we assimilated this giant scene, it’s pretty cool.” Yet there’s still more music to discover, as Brandon puts it, “There’s a whole other realm of music in Elgin, and it blows my mind every day how much is out there.” —JP

As many as sixteen bands play in the Battle every year, which now draws talent from neighboring cities. But as long as fans have the final say, Elgin bands like Mt. Pocono and Accidentally on Purpose will always rise to the top.

Shared Values: Revisiting Elgin History

Elgin Cemetery Walk Celebrates Thirty Years Gen. John S. Wilcox 2017 marks a special occasion for the Elgin Cemetery Walk – its thirtieth birthday! The Elgin Area Historical Society organizes this highly anticipated annual event that now sees over 6 00 people each year. Visitors enjoy a 90-minute guided tour through the scenic Bluff City Cemetery, stopping periodically at gravesites of former Elgin residents for a brief theatrical monologue. Actors portray the individuals while dressed in period costumes. In addition to bringing visitors to the gravesites, Cemetery Walk guides also stroll through the expansive cemetery grounds with visitors pointing out various cemetery symbolism and fascinating historic facts. Things have changed since the first Cemetery Walk in 1987: there were originally no guides, and visitors followed a chalk line to reach the historic characters. Jerry and Kathy Turnquist organized this first event after seeing smaller cemetery walks in other communities, hoping to spotlight some of the unique individuals that have left their

Libby Goll and sisters

mark on Elgin over the years. More than 400 visitors came out for that first event and enjoyed their experience in beautiful Bluff City Cemetery. That day sparked a new tradition: the annual Elgin Cemetery Walk. The Cemetery Walk is unique in that it combines theater mixed with historical facts to provide insight into Elgin’s unique history and engage the audience with a new view of history. The event also eliminates some of the uneasiness associated with cemeteries. Many people consider cemeteries to be creepy or depressing places, but an event like the Cemetery Walk is an opportunity for people to enjoy the beautiful natural setting of Bluff City Cemetery, as well as the craftsmanship and artwork of the grave markers that serve as monuments to people’s lives. The Elgin Area Historical Society will host the 30th Annual Elgin Cemetery Walk on Sunday, September 24, 2017. The guided tour of the Cemetery will take place from 11-3 p.m. at the Bluff City Cemetery, located at 945 Bluff City Blvd. on Elgin’s south-

east side. Tour guides will escort groups through the cemetery to six different characters who will talk about their lives and impact on Elgin history. This year the Society will be also be dedicating a new interpretive sign honoring the common grave of remains that were moved to Bluff City from the Channing Cemetery in 1968. There will also be several short vignettes included on the tour. Chairs will be available at gravesites, but visitors will walk the route and stay with their guide. For those with limited mobility who would like to take the tour, there will be a free bus with an on-board guide. Reservations for the bus are needed in advance. There will also be a small food court with reasonably priced hot dogs, chips, drinks, popcorn and ice cream. You love music and want to explore other musical styles. You’ve heard that the ESO is an award-winning professional orchestra, but you hesitate based on tired stereotypes about the experience. Why not explore a new musical world? Get to the know the ESO!

tra experience is like no other. Why? Because it combines the past and the present. You will be transported and experience music that expressed the spirit of the times over the last several centuries. But your personal interaction with the music makes it new, vibrant and alive.

The ESO presents exciting, high-quality, and affordable performances of the some of the best music ever written, led by Music Director and Conductor Andrew Grams, in a casual and welcoming setting. To help dispel some myths and alleviate your fears, here are some thoughts about what you can expect at a classical music concert. Let’s start with the music.

A word about concert hall rituals and traditions. ESO Music Director Andrew Grams sets the tone and as he always says, “this is not church.” Back in Mozart and Beethoven’s day, the concert experience was more like a party. At some point, the more formal experience was adopted. But today’s audiences demand a relaxed atmosphere, and at the ESO that’s the environment they try to create. The ESO’s goal is to provide a place where you can unwind, listen to good music, learn something new and hang out with people who share similar interests.

What makes classical music good? What do you look for? Just think of any other music you love. Say, your favorite band. What makes it good? The group is tight and creates a single unit of synchronistic sound. The soloists are prepared and hit all the right notes. But for the greatest experience, all of this combines to touch or connect with you in some way. As with all good music, you might not “get it” at first. Some of it will hit you right away with a beautiful melody or an unforgettable rhythm. But much of classical music is dense, rich and complicated like a seven-layer dark chocolate cake. At first bite, you are overwhelmed with an explosion of sensations. Then, with each taste, you recognize nuances of flavor and different spices. Once again, not unlike all good music, it can take many listenings to mine all the meanings, and the interaction will be unique every time. Yes, the symphony orches-

Please DO NOT worry about when to clap! Most pieces have several movements or sections. The reason for not clapping in-between movements is to help keep the mood of the piece going between sections. But it’s not a bad thing if you clap between movements because it shows you were moved emotionally. It’s a compliment. The trick is to watch the conductor, who will drop his hands at the end of a piece. Or just hold back a bit to see what others do. Join Music Director Andrew Grams and the award-winning ESO this season as they play electrifying concerts that exemplify the power of live performance. It’s all part of the ESO’s desire to create programs that enrich, uplift and entertain.    — DH

Finla Lawrence McClure came west to Elgin in 1846 at age 22. He settled on the west side of town setting up a dairy farm in the 1850s along what is now known as McClure Avenue between Highland and Lawrence avenues. A major player in Elgin’s early dairy industry, he was responsible for establishing the first milk delivery route in town, commissioning the first 8 gallon milk can that was used for local delivery as well as shipment to Chicago.   An ambitious businessman, McClure built and filled the first ice house in Elgin in 1850 cutting ice from the Fox River for local use and supply to Chicago. From his business, the local ice industry grew and prospered. By the mid-1880s, when he retired from the ice business, there were nearly a dozen ice firms in Elgin, harvesting up to 100,000 tons annually.   From 1877 to 1890 he served as the business manager of the Elgin Packing Company. Established in 1869 to facilitate the canning of locally grown fruits and vegetables, the company was in the midst of a labor crisis in1877 that threatened to dissolve the business. Finla McClure was largely responsible for turning the business around, and during his tenure, the Elgin Packing Company became one of Elgin’s most prosperous industries, employing hundreds every harvest season.   McClure served two terms as alderman on the city council from 1878-80 and was also a township trustee. By 1890, at age 66, he had retired from most of his business ventures but continued to deal in real estate for the remainder of his life. He passed away in 1900 at age 76 and was laid to rest in Bluff City Cemetery.   The Spirit of Finla McClure lives on in Elgin today. He was responsible for subdividing his land on the west side of the Fox River helping create what we now know as the Near West Neighborhood. His 1860’s Italianate style farm house still stands at 272 McClure Ave, on the street that was named for his family. His grand Shingle Style house at 770 Highland Ave, designed and constructed in 1890 by Elgin’s most noteworthy architect WW Abell was designated a Historic Landmark by the City of Elgin in 2005.

Spirits of Elgin Spirits of Elgin recognizes the people who left a mark on this place, but whose faces appear only our photographs and memories until now.

It’s a collective art project intended to decorate the community with subtle reminders of people whose presence here made a difference we can still see and feel.

The homes of Finla McClure will be featured on this year’s Historic Elgin House Tour hosted by the Gifford Park Association, September 9th and 10th. For more information on the Tour please visit GPAElgin.org and follow the Tour on Facebook. Step 1: Carefully cut on the dotted line with a hobby knife or scissors. Remove the paper from the middle.

Submit your nominations and photographs of people who have passed through — and passed away — to be considered for a future edition of Spirits of Elgin.

Caution: defacement of public or private property is a crime under Illinois law and the Elgin municipal code. Penalties are worse when a church, school or memorial is involved. Please do not tag anything that does not belong to you without permission.

Step 2: Tape the four corners of the stencil to a safe surface. It works best if the stencil is lying down flat. Spray paint through the opening to transfer the design to the surface underneath.

The goal is to seek national designation through the National Water Trails System. A similar initiative is being undertaken along the bike trail network following the Fox River corridor. From This River Town

Bummin’ Around with Ethan by Mary Ellen Goodwill At the NENA yard sale I bought one cup and one saucer made from Depression glass and one 2x3 inch paperback, FENG SHUI DOs &TABOOs. Accompanying me was ten year old Ethan whose dad, Mike Howell, is rebuilding the front porch of a Victorian home a block west of the sale. Ethan bought a 2x4x2 inch speaker for his phone and a 1x1 inch pocket dictionary. A pint glass which would have been used for cream was our only other item. Total: eleven dollars. Ethan’s mom would be the recipient of the glass creamer. We were two very satisfied customers even with the uncertainty about the speaker: would it work. We sat together on the low cement ledge at his dad’s job site. This is a comfortable perch for a kid. Opening the tiny dictionary, I found the answer to my concern about how they chose which words to fit in this teensy book: included are words that people tend to look up rather than words most people know. With that knowledge, I flipped randomly to two pages of J words and tested them on Ethan who was game for the game. Jeopardy. He had heard it but he wasn’t quite sure. My hint was, “Don’t stand too close to the road. That might put you in jeopardy.” He thought about that. I repeated the clue with dramatic effect, stressing JEOPARDY! He quickly said, DANGER! He got javelin but needed some instruction on jocular. I concluded that

the thumbnail dictionary was a real find, certainly not anything he would have imagined having when he woke up that morning. I told him about Ted, “a really famous poet who loves yard sales and wrote a poem (at least one) about them. It is called ‘Tattoo’ and Ted says that yard sales are like theaters with a stage and players.” Ethan immediately agreed with Ted, two-time United States Poet Laureate Ted Kooser from Nebraska, the first ever laureate from the Plains States. Ethan and I parted ways, he to bomb around on his bike and me to walk home and make some tea to try out my new cup and saucer. If you add pink to pale toffee, you have the color of the glass. The cup is sculpted with little flowers on stems with leaves. The saucer has a swirled, almost vertiginous design. At my patio table, powder blue umbrella, white and plum table cloth, violet petunias, I pick up the cup and saucer and take my first drink of the black tea which is hot and dry and brisk. The top of the cup is wide, the lip is thick, a very pleasurable sipping experience. The sun is the coup de grace turning the saucer to a shade of salmon.

Shared Values: Band Boosters Any successful band will tell you: they owe it all to the fans. Those people out there listening, dancing, and buying records are what drives the artists to make more and better music. And for a web publisher located on Elgin’s far west side, the converse is also true. “The music that the musicians make inspires and drives us,” said Dennis M. Kelly, creator of the music webzine Chicago Music Guide. “It helps us help them to keep creating the music that inspires us. We feed on music!” The platform for Kelly’s local music media is ChicagoMusicGuide.com, an extensive website devoted primarily to the live music scene in Chicagoland. Its pages are filled with articles, interviews, photos and video of bands originating from the region, as well as national and international acts performing here. There is so much content for music lovers, you could spend hours browsing and only scratch the surface. Recent additions to the site are a set of live photos of Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull, taken by Roman Sobus at the Chicago Theatre, and extensive coverage of Lollapalooza by Kelly himself and his team of volunteer music journalists. The Guide is the product of over fifteen years of work by diehard fans. “I created Chicago Music Guide to help my friend’s band and others get some well-deserved exposure,” Kelly told us. After reading an interview that highlighted the importance of supporting musicians through media, he began to envision a larger role for his project. “I decided that in order to help more people, I needed to seek out some additional volunteers who love Chicago music as much as I do, and do all we can to build this up.” The staff page currently lists Kelly, Managing Editor Rebecca Pointe, Photographer Roman Sobus and six writers, many of whom have considerable experience in the music industry. It takes a certain style of leadership to keep volunteers motivated to produce work this good, and Kelly’s remarks are always filled with humility and gratitude. “My photographers and writers deserve most of the credit for giving Chicago Music Guide its substance,” he said. “I only ask for one submission per month, but because of their love for music, they usually surpass that by quite a bit, which I am very thankful for.”

Chicago Music Guide The Guide’s home page is a portal to major sections of the site’s content: spotlight on local artists; interviews; album and concert reviews; photo galleries; and articles on music technique, recording gear, and the legal end of the business. Drill down into any of these sections and find great material like this opening paragraph by writer Lindsay Teske. “A potent aspect of creative communities is that they catalyze a sense of togetherness. They wield the power to bring likeminded people with similar aspirations together, and that can often serve as the blueprints for the formation of an endlessly skillful artistic entity. This is how Chicago band Lucille Furs materialized.”

Site to Behold Holding it all together is a highly sophisticated WordPress website with embedded video and audio, revolving ads, photo carousels and calendar widgets. The site design and photography make you think the Guide is put out by a Chicago agency, rather than a team of volunteers managed from a home office in Pingree Grove. Yet they are always aiming higher. “Any and all music events throughout the Chicago area has been our primary focus, but there are many more avenues I’ve been developing,” Kelly explained. A recent partnering with Red Bull TV enabled Kelly’s crew to live stream Lolla on chicagomusicguide.com, and they have been developing their own video live stream studio in Kelly’s home to support aspiring local bands trying to get ahead. Also on the drawing board is a look back: an archive of past photos of favorite artists and local venues. “You want to see photos from a band who played the original Thirsty Whale?” he joked. “That’s what I’d like to see ...”

upcoming live shows

Saturday - 3/12 Duncan Pub Thursday - 3/17 O’Bannon’s Saturday - 3/26 Milwaukee **GOMERFEST** (not a real jam)

The beauty of ambitious volunteer projects like this is that there is always room for more participation. The website is perpetually hungry, and new music is happening every day. Moreover, the affinity of music to so many other aspects of culture means that Chicago Music Guide — its subjects and its readers — benefit from all sorts of contributions. “Writers and photographers are always of interest, but also music instructors, visual artists, graphic designers, street teamers, industry pros, studio owners, indie music store owners ... we want to connect with you!”   — JP

A detailed event calendar is also published online by Chicago Music Guide, with powerful search and browse functions, and musicians can get their event listed for free as well. It’s another way in which the Guide is trying to help artists, journalists and fans get together around live music.

Friday - 3/4 King’s Stable

spurious-jam.net

The reference to that famous club reveals the taste that influences Chicago Music Guide, which encompasses the myriad genres of rock music, but is light on other styles. But this, too, is a growth area.

The Guide’s extensive directory is already in place, listing artists by name and location, including photos, biographies and links to social media. Bands can sign up for the directory for free by filling out an online form.

“I really want to get more music on the site: hip hop, classical, latin, country,” Kelly urged. I want Chicago Music Guide to represent Chicago’s music scene as completely as possible. The people deserve no less.” One way to expand is through the band directory.

“Being a musician really is a lot of hard work, perhaps with not so much payback,” Kelly said. “At the heart of Chicago Music Guide is really the desire to help people at any level stay positive and true to what is in their heart that makes them write the songs that inspire others.”
