Shared Values: Walls Worth Staring At

Space Administration Ask some people to describe an art gallery, and you may hear about eccentric personalities, strange-looking objects and high price tags. The underlying sentiment is, “what’s the point?” Chances are, those people haven’t actually visited a local art gallery, where people are friendly, the atmosphere is beautiful, and the vast majority of work is done by volunteers.

Cover Artist: Sarah Mooney My name is Sarah Mooney and I am the shop manager and co-owner, along with my husband Jose Manuel Napoles, of Funky Rooster Tattoo and Art Gallery in downtown Elgin. Along with the tattoos created in the shop, we also have a fun and eclectic collection of art for sale on the walls. From colorful abstract flowers, to Day-of-the-Dead inspired work, to paintings with a graffiti flair, the walls are full of life. Our walls surround us with what inspires us and makes us feel alive. In 2003 I graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2-d Studio Drawing. What I love about creating art is the exploration and combination of color and texture, and how they interact within the composition. This is a strong force in much of my creativity. I use a variety of mixed media from acrylic paint, to charcoal, paper, collage, and spray paint. Whatever I can get my hands on that sounds like a good idea, I will go for it. Along with bold bright colors, I also enjoy working in layers, which gives my work much more depth and interest. Its like an exploration, to see how the color and textures will interact and dance on the canvas. Much of my work has a bright and airy attitude, which is basically how I try to live my life. I am an easy going gal and try not to take anything too seriously. The celebration of life in relationships and nature, and the interaction of colors on the canvas are a few things that drive me to create. All of us at Funky Rooster Tattoo and Art Gallery are true artists at heart. We live and breathe art everyday. We share our ideas and get excited when someone creates a really cool piece. We encourage each other and respect one another. Being able to work with such a talented, positive, easy going group of people, who are so inspired to create amazing art while having a great time doing it is truly a blessing. We couldn’t ask for more.

Ars Mission The biggest example of a concerted volunteer effort toward the free display of artwork is the more than seventy members of Art for All, a non-profit corporation created in 1998 to promote the visual arts in Elgin. Most of the members are artists themselves, and they devote considerable personal time and skill to maintaining exhibits at the Hemmens Cultural Center, the Centre of Elgin, City Hall and Elgin Artspace Lofts.

says Castillo. “Each artist determines which pieces they would like to exhibit.” Some of this work is displayed only for viewing, but many artists set a price and offer their art for sale. Interested collectors contact the artist directly to make arrangements. Even so, it’s far from any sort of commercial endeavor. “The vast majority of our funding is from annual membership dues,” says Castillo, “we do not receive a commission from the sale of any artwork, and admission is not charged for any of our exhibits.”

Free Entry If the value of art is in the aesthetic experience of seeing it, consider the fact that no other gallery in Elgin charges admission either, not even privately operated galleries like Side

About every two months, paintings and sculpture are taken down and new work goes up. At the Hemmens, where the art gallery is located in the lower level of the north lobby, the group must work around the ESO’s rehearsal schedule. “It takes a good deal of effort and teamwork just to keep all of these site exhibits operating smoothly,” says Art for All president Karen Castillo. “We prefer to do what do well, than to take on more than we can handle.” In addition to the labor, the materials are supplied by the members as well. “The artwork included in each of our rotating exhibits is limited to individuals who are Art for All members in good standing,”

Street Studio Arts, which is currently the oldest business devoted to exhibiting fine art in downtown Elgin. “When we have an exhibit, we are open for free five days a week,” says Founder and Director Erin Rehberg. Even catered openings and artist receptions are free unless there is live entertainment, when a $5 donation is suggested to help pay the performers. All the labor here is donated as well. “Everyone who works at Side Street is a volunteer,” explains Rehberg. “Director Roberto Martinez primarily handles install and strike, with

assistance from Founder/Director Tanner Melvin, who set up the process we have in place.” Yet gallery operations are more than a once-a-month hobby here. It’s a daily endeavor that involves planning, staffing, marketing and expenses that surpass typical storefront business costs like rent, utilities, and a website. “Our events range from short three-day pop-up shows to six week exhibits,” says Rehberg. “To keep the walls intact with the constant turnover, it costs us hundreds of dollars to switch out an exhibition.” As a business, there is an economic component behind everything at Side Street. Like many commercial galleries (and consignment businesses), they collect a 20-40% commission on sales of art, with the remainder going to the artist. But sales, especially large ones, are not predictable or especially frequent. “Many in our community can’t afford a $1000 piece of art, but they fall in love and want something,” says Rehberg. “So we encourage artists to provide prints or less expensive companion pieces to their submitted work. Those prints are a great way to start an art collection.”

Possessive behavior is witnessed at some levels in the art business, but in Elgin, freedom and generosity are the norm. None of the local galleries control exclusive access to individual artists, or compete for clients. Side Street makes interstate art exchanges an annual project, and Art Area Studio 51 encourages artists to circulate their work. “We promote trading of art with other galleries,” says Rich Evans, Director of Art Area Studio 51, a spacious gallery, cafe and performance venue in downtown Elgin. He notes that this practice is not condoned by some upscale galleries in Geneva. Art Area Studio 51 has a natural affinity for the artists of ad-

jacent Elgin Artspace Lofts, like Peter Austin and Jurgita Mekyte, whose paintings hang throughout the gallery, but work is welcomed in any medium by artists no matter where they’re from. “We like art that stirs the senses and awakens emotions,” says Evans in describing the collection on display, “quality and affordable work at reasonable prices.” With the help of a committee, Evans features 3-4 artists monthly for shows lasting 15-30 days. More than affinity explains the collection of 2D and 3D artwork at Funky Rooster Studios, which is part gallery and part tattoo shop. “Much of the work on display is by our resident tattoo artists,” says co-owner Sarah Mooney.

“We have an amazing group of tattoo artists who create paintings and drawings outside of tattooing — they were their first loves of art.” Unlike Side Street, its non-profit neighbor up the street, Funky Rooster is a commercial business which combines art-based services with fine art sales. “We created this combination art gallery space and tattoo shop, not because we were hoping to get rich selling art, but because we love art,” admits Mooney. “Selling art alone in Elgin is not a viable business if you want to survive.”

Still others question artists’ qualifications to represent certain forms in certain manners.” Fortunately these instances have led to respectful discussions on culture, she says, “which is an important key to having a vibrant art community. That is why we are here.” Another sign that the Elgin art climate is maturing is a new addition to the Art for All bylaws, which essentially will require that artwork displayed in the City’s public buildings be family-friendly.

Customers and cash flow are essential to a retail business, and that’s why you won’t see any indecent material on the walls of Funky Rooster. “We have had some very talented artists come in who didn’t have the style of work we are looking for,” says Mooney. “We are not interested in bringing in obscene or sacrilegious art to display here ... if we don’t feel it’s good for the market of people we are trying to reach, we will not hang it.” Artistic subject matter can be controversial. Reflecting on four years of past programming experience at Side Street Studio Arts, Erin Rehberg says, “Some folks don’t take kindly to the Krampus story. Others don’t care for nudity.

Performing Arts Center, named in recognition of a substantial gift from the Elgin-based corporation. The John R. Grady Gallery of Photographic Art on the second floor provides meeting and teaching space, in honor of the instructor who served the College for 28 years. An open triangular space that connections three buildings is designated the E. Max von Isser Gallery of Art, anchored by a polished metal sculpture by its namesake, and surrounded by student work in all media. Throughout the campus is an impressive permanent collection of art that is worth a look.

A Planet’s Culture “We have visitors come in and ask if we are a museum, or if items in our collection are actually for sale,” reports Joe Zeller, founder of River Trading Post in East Dundee, a premiere Native American art gallery with a second location in Scottsdale, AZ.

As the school year winds down, it hosts a series of 1-2 week shows of advanced student work, followed by an Annual Juried Student Exhibition which remains up through the summer. At Elgin Community College, the largest of three galleries is Safety-Kleen Gallery One, a beautiful space for professional exhib- E. Max von Isser Gallery of Art, Elgin its located in the Visual and Community College.

Zeller has been collecting Native American art for over 40 years, and is now an expert in selecting and interpreting value in historic finds as well as creations by contemporary artists whose work appears at the Smithsonian, the Heard Museum and elsewhere. While “art for art’s sake” may define the European tradition, other cultures viewed art as inherently functional. That’s why pottery and weavings are prominent in Native American art, which reflects cultural beliefs in its design and execution. Its scarcity holds a powerful appeal. “Our customers literally come from all over the world. By and large they are collectors who are very selective — many are professionals or academics,” explains Zeller. Most local patrons come in just to view the collection as a beautiful exhibit unto itself.

The Vastness of Space Perhaps nowhere else in Elgin is more square feet of wall and floor space devoted to beautiful exhibits then at the Robin and Mark Seigle Gallery inside Elgin Artspace Lofts. The soaring skylit atrium is the focal point of a facility that hosts community events and live performances as well as finely executed professional visual art exhibits. Volunteers from Art for All provide patch-and-paint support between shows and serve as docents during visiting hours. They have been strong allies since the building opened and continue to support the resident artists, visitors and the building management. If you’re actually interested in an expansive, high-quality, urban art gallery experience, visit the Seigle Gallery for free almost any weekday. There’s no guarantee you won’t meet any eccentric personalities (unless you’re that person), but you may very well have the gallery all to yourself, which is a luxury made possible by local volunteers who care, and one which few cities can offer. —JP

TalentFest U-46 Returns to the Hemmens by Kira Fox This year’s U-46 Talent Fest is right around the corner! On Tuesday, March 21st the top two acts chosen from the 5 district high schools will compete head to head at the Hemmens. Starting at 7pm the performances will first be judged by the audience, who votes at intermission. Then, the top five performers with the highest votes perform again for a panel of five pre-selected judges who rate them on criteria of stage presence, professionalism, originality, etc. The first, second, and third place winners receive a plaque and monetary prize. There is also an additional TalentFest traveling trophy awarded to the school whose two acts combined garners the most audience votes. Last year’s winners include Don DeGuzman from Bartlett High

Elgin High school won the TalentFest traveling trophy last year as well. Jeff Grosser, who has organized the talent fest for the last seven years’, states that “the event was originally created to provide more locally-based programming at the Hemmens, as well as to feature the diverse, creative talents of district students outside of traditional organizations at the schools”. The talent fest offers a creative outlet and platform for young students to showcase their unique talents and passions, and

Don’t Give the IRS More than you Should... Seek Professional Tax Advice! Who will prepare your 2016 tax return in the 2017 tax season? Is it time for a change? • Are you tired of preparing your own taxes, and finding it more difficult and time consuming? FLP Tax Service saves you time, money, and aggravation. Is your old tax preparer hard to reach and never returns phone calls, during and after tax season? FLP Tax Service staff answers phone and email messages within 48 hours, even after April 15th. • Are you paying high fees that are constantly increasing, even if your tax returns get easier and are less complicated? FLP fees are based not by the number of tax forms it prints, but on the complexity of your return. Fees are reviewed annually, and adjusted as needed. • Is your tax preparer not up to speed with the tax laws or tax software technology? FLP tax preparers are continually attending tax update schools to earn continuing education credit, to be ready prior to the start of each new tax season. Does your preparer offer three ways to get your taxes done? 1. By scheduling a sit down interactive tax appointment. Taxes are typically completed within a 1 1/2 hr. appointment or sooner, depending on whether you brought all your info. 2. By remote tax processing. Get your taxes done without leaving your home. Remote tax preparation is available using a state of the art secure web based portal system. Scan and upload your documents over the FLP Secure File portal. No need to get out of the house. Phone interviews are done at a convenient time (for you) to finish your return. 3. By mailing your tax info or by dropping it off. We will process it quickly, and before it’s completed, you will be contacted to make sure that you agree with the results. Note: you will always get to speak with a live tax preparer to complete your taxes. FLP Tax Service is a home-based business, celebrating 11 years of providing personal and accurate tax preparation. Our fees are typically one third or less than CPA firms and Franchise Tax Firms. Low overhead keeps our fees down. FLP is a Member of the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce (EAC), for 11 years, and Member of the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP), for 20 years. You will get a 100% Client Guarantee of Satisfaction. There never are any extra charges for e-filing, IRS direct deposits, or copies of your tax returns (paper or pdf). Lois Amelia Conger Wilcox (1838-1921) came to Illinois from New York, like so many others from her generation. She lived in Galesburg as a teen, where she met a dashing young law student from Elgin named John Shuler Wilcox. She would have been attracted to his gift for oratory and love of letters, as well as his professional prospects. Wilcox was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1855 and began a long career in law, banking, business and military service. Lois married him when she turned 18 and they lived for decades at 456 Douglas Avenue, where they raised four surviving children. The Wilcoxes were prominent abolitionists in early Elgin society, and were among the families to welcome the first black refugees from the South in 1862. However, with her husband away, commanding the Union Army’s 52nd Infantry Regiment, Lois did not want her own house used for shelter. But this was not for a lack of compassion. As the Wilcox children grew and graduated from Elgin Academy, Lois began a career of her own. Col. Wilcox was a perennial Trustee of the Academy from the 1870’s onward, and Lois served on the faculty there. As a painter, she was vice-president of the Elgin Art Association during a period when the City was especially art-minded. In June of 1887, she published a notice in the daily newspapers that read, “Women of Elgin, young and old, rich and poor, married or single, come let us reason together and lend a hand in the world’s great work.” Thirty-six women gathered and organized as the Elgin Woman’s Club, with Lois Wilcox as their first President. For the next ten years, under her leadership, the Woman’s Club developed Elgin’s first hospital from an ordinary house donated by Henry Sherman, through multiple moves and expansions, into a new three-story modern building on Slade Avenue. Lois used her extensive civic and social connections and passion for the arts to raise the necessary funds from concerts, plays, exhibits, corporate donations and investors. She sat on the 1891 Building Committee, and served as Chair of the Board of Managers as the doors of the “new” Sherman Hospital first opened in 1895.

Caution: defacement of public or private property is a crime under Illinois law and the Elgin municipal code. Penalties are worse when a church, school or memorial is involved. Please do not tag anything that does not belong to you without permission.

Step 1: Carefully cut on the dotted line with a hobby knife or scissors. Remove the paper from the middle.

All images are positives. For best results, use a light color against a dark background.

Mini-Media Guide: FEED 411

How to Get Your Events Listed for FREE in The FEED Publishing and promoting all the things to do in Elgin is why we started BRAVO. We are eager to fill our pages with your events, concerts, festivals, lectures, arts happenings and more.

What We Don’t Want Commercial messages, like “$9.99 Friday Fish Fry” belong in your ad, not in the FEED. Since BRAVO is freely distributed to the general public, private events should not be listed.

Repeating Events Some kinds of events repeat regularly, like bird watching or French conversation groups. If these events are open, they are welcome in the FEED.

Basic Event Submission Visit our online event submission page and fill out the form. Fill in all your event details, along with your own contact info in case there are questions.

Automatic Submission Fortunately, we have a means of collecting events from certain kinds of schedules you post on your website or social media. If your website has a built-in calendar feature, there’s a good

chance that your scheduled event data can be accessed over the internet, in a form that’s conducive to publishing in the FEED. The technology is called RSS (Really Simple Syndication). Ask your webmaster about it. Then tell us the URL (web address) of your calendar RSS feed, and we will take it from there.

Facebook Events We can access the events you create in your Facebook account, provided they are open, public events. All we need is your Facebook ID, which is a number consisting of 10-15 digits. You can determine this number by following the tips at findmyfacebookid.com (see link below).

Google Calendar If you have a Google account, you have free access to a suite of useful tools, including a calendar that can be accessed as an RSS feed. Edit your calendar settings and make your calendar public (or share it with us). You can obtain the URL of your calendar’s RSS feed by clicking the “XML” button. Boom! Send us that URL!

FEED.links http://www.marqueemedia.net/events Fill out the form with your event title, date, time, location, phone number, short description, and price. Your name, email and phone number are also required in case we need to double-check your details! http://www.findmyfacebookid.com Go to the Facebook profile page for your business. Copy the URL (web address) shown in your browser’s location field. Go to findmyfacebookid.com and paste your profile page URL into the box at the top of the screen. Click Submit. The next screen will display your Facebook ID. Send us that number.

Gallery Night: Artist Opening Reception Featuring the newspaper decoupage artwork of Nancy Turpin-Marshall. Decoupage or Découpage is the art of decorating an object by gluing colored paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf and other decorative elements. Each layer is sealed with varnishes (often multiple coats) until the “stuck on” appearance disappears and the result looks like painting or inlay work.” 7p, Martini Room, 161 E. Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra: By the Waters of Babylon One of the oldest songs of exile is Psalm 137, expressing the longing for home of Jews who had been captured and forced to relocate in Babylon. This Jewish diaspora has been repeated throughout history, as various peoples have been pushed out of their homeland by war, destruction, or economic collapse. This concert features music from Verdi’s Nabucco, including the famous “Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves,” as well as music of the Irish diaspora of the 19th century and of Jewish composer refugees from Nazi Europe. Also featured are spirituals, blues, and jazz‚ÄîAmerica’s greatest contribution to music, with its roots in the African slave trade and diaspora. The Fox Valley Beaux Arts is always true to its mission: To elevate the arts through area youth scholarships, community art support and lifelong learning. Founded in 1984 as a not-forprofit 501 C-3 organization, it continues to foster the arts in the Fox Valley area. Beaux Arts has given support to students, families and arts groups for the past 33 years. Members enjoy monthly programs targeted toward education of youth and its members in one or more aspect of the fine arts in music, drama, dance, theatre and visual arts. In its inception, Beaux Arts supported the Independent Players theatre group with donations, dinner theatre evenings and audience development and has maintained a solid 33-year history of educational partnership with this group. Through the camaraderie and fundraising efforts of its early members, Beaux Arts expanded its beneficiaries to include students from local schools who wished to further their studies in the fine arts. Over the years it has donated thousands of dollars to deserving students. In the last two years alone, it has donated over $20,000.00 to U-46 area high school seniors. This year, Individual scholarships from $500-$3000.00 will be awarded. Auditions will be held on April 6, 2017 at the Elgin Arts Showcase in Elgin. Those interested in applying may download the

scholarship application form at www.foxvalleybeauxarts.com. Deadline for applying is March 24, 2017. While these scholarships have been made available to nurture the talents of high school seniors, Beaux Arts has recently implemented its “Second Tier” program whereas former recipients who have continued their studies in the arts may also be eligible for additional scholarships. One of last year’s winners in the area of theatre wrote, “... I wanted to update you on everything that the Fox Valley Beaux Arts scholarship has helped me to achieve. I started off my first semester with intro tech classes, scene design and costume design. [My school] is hands on learning and offers practical experience. As a freshman I worked on the set design, interviewed and was appointed assistant stage manager...I want to thank your organization for helping to make my dream a reality…” Another recipient, in the area of ballet wrote “...I have already been in ...the ballet Les Sylphides ... I have had the opportunity to work with two fantastic choreographers. Thank you for helping me to become a part of this exciting and inspiring education!” The group has benefited through community partnerships with EFS Foundation and the Cosmopolitan Club of Elgin.

While Beaux Arts meets monthly and holds monthly Board meetings, it has only one major fundraiser a year: a fashion show/luncheon/silent auction. It has been held the last several years at the Elgin Country Club. Themes for past luncheons have been as varied as “Lights, Camera, Action”, “Under the Tuscan Sun”, and “Afternoon in Paris”. Fashions have been highlighted from Chico’s or the White House Black Market. Lavish raffle baskets are the centerpiece of the silent auction table. Clothing, makeup and accessory vendors add to the day’s festivities. This year’s fundraiser will be held in September. Please check out the website soon for specific date and information. Fox Valley Beaux Arts has a current membership of over eighty women and holds monthly meetings at various restaurants or businesses or members’ homes. Over the years, meetings have showcased dance, opera, painting, glass mosaic, the culinary arts, theatre and the literary arts, and members have created masks, centerpieces, and
