Elgin’s Big Timbre After seeing an ad in an international musicians’ magazine, a professional violinist shows up for an audition, only to meet fifty other violinists of equal or better skill and talent. One at a time, they play prepared excerpts from the classic orchestral repertoire, from behind a screen and out of the view of a panel of judges. Then each is given a sheet of music to play which they haven’t rehearsed, and may have never played before. For the panel, the “sight reading” part of the blind audition reveals the depth of experience — or raw talent — of the candidate. Only the best few of these players are invited back for another round of auditions, in hopes of being selected for one open seat in a group of twelve. But this scene isn’t happening in London or Vienna, or even New York City. This is the process for selecting a player for the Elgin Symphony Orchestra.

Big Fish in a Big Pond There’s no doubt about it: the professional music business is very competitive, because there are simply aren’t enough paying gigs for the number of talented and dedicated artists who want to work. (Why the arts labor market is so lop-sided with too much supply and too little demand is a topic for another time.) And it’s not just instrumentalists who want to work for the ESO. When the position of Music Director opened up in 2011, over 200 accomplished conductors from around the world sought the post in Elgin. The young, charismatic Andrew Grams got the nod in 2013. “Besides outside the New York

City metro area, I can’t think of a place anywhere else in the United States where you have the ability to draw such fine musicians,” he said of Elgin at the time.

Big City Sound Sixty-five years in the making, the ESO now ranks at the 90th percentile of U.S. professional orchestras by the size of its budget. Yet among cities with orchestras, Elgin falls at just the 50th percentile by size. In other words, our city boasts an orchestra that’s comparable in stature to those in Milwaukee, Seattle or Washington, DC. Those facts alone could dismiss any argument that Elgin isn’t a place of serious art and culture. And all those prestigious awards from music insiders notwithstanding, the public is in love with the music more than ever. “One of my criteria for seeking a position as Music Director was the people have to want a great orchestra,” Grams told us recently. “We have overwhelming support here because the public understands that the mere existence of the ESO makes the community richer.”

Big Benefits That community enrichment is more than just a bullet point on a web page. It’s the classroom visits by ESO’s traveling ensembles, the free Sunday afternoon concerts at Gail Borden Library, and the weekly recitals in local hospitals. It’s the free scholarly talks for listeners before every concert, and the regular “Mingle with the Musicians” in a downtown pub. And it’s the free personalized

Music Director Andrew Grams leads a rehearsal of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra in the Hemmens Cultural Center. (Courtesy ESO) coaching available to Elgin’s aspiring young musicians by some of the world’s greatest solo artists who perform with the ESO. Yet these “master classes” are just a fringe benefit to hundreds of music students whose careers are being cultivated daily in Elgin and the Fox Valley.

The Hours Add Up On a Sunday in October, 17-year-old Ella Rose Atkins is playing her trombone for five hours or more – but it’s not that unusual for her, nor for many of the more than 360 students of the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra (EYSO), one of the largest youth orchestra programs in Illinois. (Photo courtesy ESO)

An aspiring professional orchestral musician, Ella Rose is a member of the Youth Symphony, EYSO’s premier ensemble, which is conducted by EYSO Artistic Director Randal Swiggum. Himself a veteran of the organization, Mr. Swiggum is now entering his 18th season as Artistic Director. What began as a temporary project, a job he thought he’d do “for two or three years,” has since become a great source of both pride and renown for him. The program has grown magnitudes in his time at the helm, and he led the Youth Symphony on their first international tour to the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in 2006. Their second international tour, recently announced, is the Youth Symphony’s Cuban debut scheduled for March of 2017.

A Presence of Minds If you spend any time with Mr. Swiggum, one thing you notice is that he asks the same level of dedication and thoughtfulness from everyone he works with, from the high school seniors and college students in the Youth Symphony down to the seven- and eightyear-olds in EYSO’s youngest ensemble, as well as his fellow conductors and staff. That consistently high standard is just one of many things that makes EYSO so unique. Careful consideration is given to every element of the student expe-

rience, from who greets auditioning musicians and how to the way each rehearsal begins. Every conductor, coach, and staff person cares not only about how well their students play, but how they get along with each other, how they’re doing in school, and how they’re growing as thinkers and citizens.

Practice Room Confessions Full disclosure: I myself played in the Youth Symphony under Mr. Swiggum’s direction for three years when I was in high school, and since then I’ve been inseparable from the organization. First as a volunteer and now as director of EYSO’s digital media strategy, I have loved seeing behind the scenes of the program that was so important to me as a young student. At my very first rehearsal as a member of the Youth Symphony, we were preparing for a performance with violin superstar Midori, discussing the big ideas proposed by Tchaikovsky and composers of Latin America. I sat alongside French horn players who were more skilled than I ever thought I could be, and in no time, I was pushing myself to be better and better to meet the expectations of my peers. That’s a common experience for new EYSO students. “In EYSO, you have people that actually care about music,” says Alex Carroll, a 14-year-old bassist from St. Charles, “as opposed to… I’m going to be brutally honest: there are people in school who couldn’t care less about orchestra. Everyone in EYSO has a goal to play really well, instead of slacking off and not practicing.”

A Collective Effort Alex joined EYSO’s Prelude Orchestra – one of nine large ensembles supported by the organization – in sixth grade, after watching his older sister Lizzie play cello in the ensemble. Like Alex, she was relieved by EYSO’s complete lack of competitiveness, which she credits to the high skill level of the musicians. “I always wanted to be the best,” but once she started studying under a very demanding teacher, “it was harder to reach those higher goals. In EYSO, everybody kind of recognizes that, so people put collaborating with each other above competing with each other.” It’s not an environment in which competition would get you very far. Seating rotates within each section, unlike many music programs (including professional orchestras), in which the best players sit at the front, and the worst sit at the back. It’s a motivation to make kids practice, says Mr. Swiggum, but it doesn’t do so well when you’re tackling some of the most serious pieces of the classical music canon. Performing Mahler’s first symphony or Sibelius’ Finlandia requires an intense level of teamwork and communication that is not supported by asking students to compete for the “best” seats. It’s a stark contrast to many school music programs which require scale tests and seating auditions each quarter or semester, which helps teachers meet mandatory testing standards and a minimum amount of examinations required to award grades.

Careful Placement EYSO is a welcome respite

Parents have consistently praised the organization for its fairness — not because of blindjudged, numerically-scored tests, but because students are placed according to their strength and growth areas, matched with fellow musicians from which they can learn. Even in auditions each spring, students play for the conductors with whom they may eventually study. A premium is placed on gauging each student’s personality, potential for growth, and leadership capabilities, and at the end of a long weekend (last spring brought more than 400 auditions), all the conductors sit down in a room together and find the best place for each student who is ready for EYSO.

matic curriculum that informs repertoire choices and discussion topics that link all the ensembles together. The 2015-16 40th Anniversary Season is entitled “It’s About Time!”, exploring musical monuments, music as a “time art,” and the legacy of historical figures like Maud Powell, the Elgin Watch Factory Band, and the city of Elgin itself. This means that each of the ensembles is playing important music of these eras, commissions from Elgin composers, and repertoire of monumental significance, like Aaron Copland’s famed A Lincoln Portrait.

Comprehensive education like this serves many purposes, not the least of which is opening students’ minds to topics they may never have encountered before. One EYSO alum explained that after a season exploring the parallels between music and architecture, he became obsessed with structures and how they are built, and he quickly subscribed to architecture magazines and began visiting famous buildings. By broaching topics like invention, orientalism, and the influence of Shakespeare (all recent season themes), EYSO offers something for the many different types of students who attend rehearsals each week. Philharmonia violinist Mia Gerace enjoys that aspect of the discussions they have as a group. “You get thrown one question and everyone builds off of each other or has their own, different opinion. It’s incredible to have that many people in a room, and we all have different ideas, and they’re all said in different words.” “Mr. Krempa does a really

good job of creating a positive atmosphere,” says 17-year-old bassist Cate Fanning of their conductor, Anthony Krempa. “It’s nice that he encourages different perspectives, rather than ‘what the conductor says goes.’”

Integrating for Life Music education has the power to link those many different people and ideas together. The arts advocacy arena, which didn’t really exist until recent years, continues to churn out the same studies with the same results: music education improves math and science grades, promotes collaboration, reverses the shortening of attention spans brought on by smartphones and 6-second videos, etc. But in an age of STEM schooling and a dwindling job market, music education serves a broader purpose. Science writer Natalie Angier has said that “if the 20th century was the age of the specialist, then the 21st will be the age of the integrationist” – people who work together, create their own industries, draw parallels among many fields, and never stop asking questions.

Victoria Palma, a cellist in the Sinfonia orchestra, auditioned for both EYSO and a youth orchestra in Chicago when she decided in seventh grade that she wanted to boost her musical growth. She describes her EYSO audition as “a really welcoming environment, instead of a cutthroat environment” like she had experienced elsewhere.

The Whole Musician EYSO’s emphasis on collaboration rather than competition is just one part of a broader mission to educate the “whole musician” – helping students to grow as critical thinkers, creative risk-takers, global citizens, and community leaders. Unlike in many music rehearsals, a lot of time is spent exploring ideas, not just drilling notes and rhythms. Each of EYSO’s seasons is informed by a the-

About half of EYSO’s graduating seniors go on to study music in college, whether in performance, education, or a related field. The other half go into a wide variety of pursuits spanning the gamut of both liberal arts and sciences – like Alex Carroll, determined to be an engineer, or Mia Gerace, a self-proclaimed “Earth nerd” whose favorite class is AP Environmental Science. Other students like Ella Rose Atkins have their sights firmly set on becoming professional orchestral musicians, and it’s not unusual for them to play their instrument “for at least three hours each day,” as she does. Ella Rose joined EYSO after living for a brief time in Japan, where, free of any musical obligations, she spent her practice time playing music she loved, and she quickly fell for orchestral music. As a trombonist in the Youth Symphony, Ella Rose relishes the focus and attention to detail at the heart of EYSO rehearsals. “We have the opportunity to go so much deeper into the music

and be so much better at it.” That’s what draws students like Ella Rose to EYSO: the desire to move beyond what they can accomplish in their school band or orchestra, and to be among peers who feel the same way. I asked Ella Rose if she ever felt like an odd duck, being dedicated to orchestral music in a time when every other day promises an op-ed about how classical music is outdated or dying out entirely. “Between EYSO and my friends at Sycamore [High School], most of whom are in EYSO, they’re all really serious about it and they all love it. I never feel out of place.”

A Civic Example Across town a group of adults who are serious about classical music have found a place where they can fit in, practice, and perform. The Judson Civic Orchestra is made up of collegiate music students at Judson University, music faculty, and a fair number of accomplished amateur musicians from Elgin

Expression: Judson Civic Orchestra and nearby communities. Like the ESO, which was first formed as a community orchestra in 1950, the JCO has evolved from its origins as an ensemble based at Elgin Community College, where the EYSO is now the resident orchestra program. The partnership with Judson has itself evolved from one more closely connected to the university, led by faculty and influenced by curriculum, to a more independent organization with its own board of directors.

Of, By and For the People Everything at the JCO involves direct participation by the players, the board, and the conductors. “Program planning is a group process,” says Chairman and co-conductor Jim Franklin. Suggestions from the group are finalized at a board meeting, and are not limited to just the scores that are in the music library, nor by any other constraint.

Judson Civic Orchestra conducted by Jim Franklin, in rehearsal at Herrick Chapel, Judson University.

“We think it’s import that the players (and audiences) be exposed to all styles of music, including as much of the standard orchestral repertoire as possible,” explains Franklin. “We don’t limit ourselves ...” The group’s current program is an all-American concert featuring original scores by Bernstein, Copland, and Glass, and arrangements of works by John Williams and George Gershwin. Not appearing this season is Copland’s Red Pony Suite; after playing through it, the group concensus was to take a pass, so they replaced it with Fanfare for the Common Man.

West Side Success Story The self-governing style of the JCO is a credit to the more than 30 artists who collaborate in this ongoing effort. Many are music teachers, like co-conductor and violinist Joanna Newby, who serves on the Judson music faculty. Others are private studio teachers, semi-professionals,

Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and full-time music students. Orchestra members come mostly from the northwest suburbs, but some travel from Chicago every Monday night for rehearsal. New players come from the Judson music department and referrals from within the ensemble.

But the rehearsal and performance halls, the music library and equipment, and year-round administrative support is provided by the Music Department and the Center for Worship in the Performing Arts at Judson University.

“We treat the group as much like professionals as we can,” says Franklin.

For this the JCO is especially thankful, “most importantly for Judson’s dedication to the mission of sustaining a university/ community orchestra that makes these opportunities possible.”

Audition by Addition One exception to that is the entry process, which is as different from the professional model as Bach is to Bartók. “We have found the best audition is to invite someone to play with us for a couple of weeks and see how it works out.” This, too reflects the mutual consensus ethic that characterizes the JCO. Its nine-month season includes concerts in November and April, with special events like a joint Christmas concert with the Judson University choir. Exceptional local artists have also appeared in solo peformances, like pianist Sojung Lee Hong, and double-bass concerto contest winner Jakob Gerritsen.

Working in Concert Joining together in a concert for the sheer joy of it is perhaps the purest performance of a musician, and that describes who plays in the JCO. Just like the pros, each person invests in their own instrument and its care, in formal attire, and time spent in personal practice.

Signposts Now a regional center for orchestral excellence, Elgin is home to seven orchestras — ESO, JCO, and five ensembles of EYSO — not including wind bands, chamber groups, or public school music programs, all of which deserve mention. And this can’t be explained by a theory of population centers, affluence, or landmark institutions. All of this music blossomed from the work of local people gathering around a community college over a period of sixty-five years. The City of Elgin acknowledged part of this heritage in 2000 by renaming North Street to Symphony Way in honor of the ESO’s 50th anniversary. But Symphony Way does not go very far. It’s time we considered swapping two letters in Big Timber Road to reflect the scale — and the sound — of this distinctive energy of Elgin culture. —RM/JP

The Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra’s 40th Anniversary Season begins on Sunday, November 8, with three concerts entitled Monumental at the Elgin Community College Arts Center, where EYSO is an In-Residence Ensemble. Find more information at EYSO.org, and purchase tickets at tickets.elgin.edu.

November 2015 Louis Malle gave his fans a shock with The Fire Within (Le feu follet), a penetrating study of individual and social inertia. Maurice Ronet (Elevator to the Gallows), in an implosive, haunted performance, plays Alain Leroy, a self-destructive writer who resolves to kill himself and spends the next twenty-four hours trying to reconnect with a host of wayward friends. Unsparing in its portrait of Alain’s inner turmoil and shot with remarkable clarity, The Fire Within is one of Malle’s darkest and most personal films. – Criterion. Shared Values: Resale Therapy

The Moral of the Store That melamine computer desk, the gently-worn pant suit, and the Sunbeam percolator are not junk: they are our teachers. They offer an object lesson as profound as any you’ll hear in your school or house of worship, if you care to think about it. Occupying space in an Elgin thrift shop, awaiting their second chance to serve in the home of a bargain hunter, these items aren’t really objects of salvation. Instead, they attest to the character of the people who first bought and valued them, and then gave them back to the community.

The New Used Goods Trade Formerly dismissed as a market for junk peddled by creeps and bought by people with no better options, the second-hand business now enjoys a much improved image, even boasting its own trade association.

The National Association of Resale and Thrift Shops (NARTS) values the sector at $16 billion dollars. That exceeds the total revenue of florists, booksellers, or men’s clothiers. During the past seven years of economic hard times, the resale business has thrived and expanded to more than 25,000 stores nationwide. As for Elgin, our resale marketplace boasts nearly twice the number of stores per capita (by conservative measures; excluding used cars) as the national average.

Our Chattel Industry Like any other market, the secondary market needs producers as well as consumers. But the nature of the resale trade means that goods are supplied by the community in the form of donations, trades, or sales of personal property. For people between the ages of 25 and 65, “trading up” is a normal part of life. Upgrades affect

Elgin has more than twice the proportion of people in these age brackets as the rest of the nation. The fact that so much of our stuff gets resold and reused is evidence of the community’s pragmatism as well as a credit to the city’s proactive stance on waste management.

Central Elgin is a patchwork of historic neighborhoods where preservationism is alive and well. On every block you’ll find homes decorated in various periods dating to the 1890’s, and this puts a bulge on the baseline of the antiques market here.

Cheap is the New Chic And who wants a used metal plant stand? You do, because that thing is gorgeous and it only costs $3.88. And you’re going to incorporate it into the design of that bar you’re building in the basement. Local shops like Wall to Wall Retro and Whatnots and Whimsies reflect the locals’ love of eclectic twentieth century design, and high volume stores like Goodwill are abundant sources for creative materials prized by local artists. Mr. Cheaps Mattresses & More is tapping into the “art furniture” genre to augment his bedding business. Every Elginite in a zombie costume will tell you that a thrift shop is the best place to get outfitted; for chop-shop apparel and jewelry made from old watches

Victoriana is Near

Don’t believe it? Consider the fact that more than 2000 people every year will pay $20 to walk through your house and admire the furniture during the Historic Elgin House Tour. You’ll find bona fide antiques in a half dozen shops, and for the finest heirloom American pocket watches, all roads lead to Elgin.

Vintage Pressings For some people, the definition of culture is a used book shop, of which we have a few. For others, Rediscover Records is bringing culture back one vinyl disc at a time. Old comic books, toy soldiers and more can be found within a few blocks of the river. When the alien invaders one day examine these collections, will they question why the Elginites preserved these particular items, or wonder why they weren’t ruined by overuse?

A Goods Business to Be In Suppose there was a store housed in a formerly distressed property, staffed by volunteers, where people and businesses donate home improvement materials, furniture, accessories and appliances. Suppose the funds from the sale of these discounted goods were used to build affordable homes for local people. That store is the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Elgin, the only one of its kind within a 1000 square mile area. Its 4500 individual sales transactions per month are a powerful record of a community of people who choose to reuse.

Reduce, Reuse, Repsychle Every item for sale in a thrift shop represents an act of generosity by a neighbor. Its price is proof that as a community we recognize and value its potential. And every sale validates our belief that stuff that still has a useful life should not turn into pollution. In practical terms, those sales also serve the community. According to a 2009 Chicago area

study, 68% of the revenue of an independent, locally-owned business is returned to the local economy in the form of wages, taxes, and business expenses (compared to 43% for chain stores). Most of the stuff we surround ourselves with will outlast us, even if we bury it in a landfill. And the cost of waste management is substantial, and affects everyone far beyond just taxes and fees. If Elgin can produce a generation of people who learn and habitually practice the Three R’s of sanitation, it bodes well for the quality of life — and cost of living — in this old river town. And as some wise orchestra musician may or may not have once said, “All the best violins are used violins.”  —JP

What This Town Needs: Community Currency Dollers in change. Later, she leaves a three Doller tip for Nick, a server at a local restaurant. He gets a few more Dollers later that night.

Cash is C l Not just any paper money, but local currency. It’s a concept as old as money itself: a medium for exchanging value within a local economy.

An Experiment Worth Trying Suppose a non-profit Elgin Doller Exchange (EDE) prints up 10,000 paper notes with a beautiful design that incorporates images of Elgin’s past, present and future. Each Elgin Doller is worth one US dollar. Local cash-based businesses each buy 100 Dollers from the EDE at cost (e.g. ten cents per note). They take $100 out of their own cash register, store it in a pickle jar, and replace that money with the Elgin Dollers.

local economy is a primary reason for creating alternative currencies.

Keeping Dollers Local Because the notes can’t be banked, there is no incentive to save them. In fact, since their value as currency decreases over time (called “negative interest”), there is a strong incentive to spend them.

Activating Resources

Another Day, Another Doller

Grants of Elgin Dollers could be used to pay for small projects, providing income to workers that can only be injected right back into the local economy.

Maribel buys a $2 coffee and pays with a five. She gets three

In every credit card transaction, about 4% of the value goes to some “big bank in the sky.” PayPal, Square and other digital payment systems also charge a fee for your use of the banking cloud. A cash economy preserves all of that value for local merchants. In fairness, banks do help the economy by expanding the money supply through lending, but for this, too, they exact a fee. If the EDE makes a grant or gives an interest-free loan in Dollers, it also expands the money supply in a way that directly benefits the community it serves.

Got Any Change?

Because the notes are only accepted as cash in Elgin businesses, the Dollers stay here. Stimulating a local economy is a primary reason for creating alternative currencies, as cities around the world have proven.

Suppose the local riverfront needs litter removal and erosion control. There is plenty of help available to do the work, but no source of funds to pay for the labor. Enter the EDE.

Alas, if only everything in life would cost less than five Dollers ... But since that’s not the world we live in, artists must come to the rescue and design Five, Ten, and Twenty Doller notes. Boosting local trade and creating opportunity through the work of artists with hometown pride: could it possibly prove that “the love of money is the root of all evil something good”?

Over time, the Dollers pass into circulation. Many are spent in Elgin businesses, and given back out again in change, and spent again. Some will be saved as souvenirs, and a few will be carried away by visitors to another place where the Elgin Doller isn’t recognized.

Spreading the Wealth Around

Cameron buys lunch at the ECC cafeteria for seven Dollers. The person in line behind him gets two of those Dollers in change for their purchase, and the cycle continues.

Every time a local customer makes a cash purchase, that business gives out a Doller or two in place of US dollars as change for the transaction. The customer in turn can spend those Elgin Dollers just like any other cash at another participating small business.

For each Doller given out in change, a small business is keeping a real US dollar. Once they’ve all been given out, the business realizes a net gain of $90 ($100 minus the original ten spent on notes). But that’s not the point.

G R E AT S E

Aviator sunglasses, vinyl records and the Muppets are cool again. Just as sure as nylon stockings and fondue parties will be cool again someday, so will paper money.

Nick spends six Dollers on snacks at the QuikMart. The QuikMart pays Rudy twenty Dollers to wash the windows. Rudy pays part of his rent in Dollers. Rudy’s landlord pays Cameron twenty Dollers to mow grass.

Given the option to use Dollers as payment for local produce and commercial services, businesses can create demand for community-sourced goods and labor, which spurs creation of jobs and new business starts.
