The Pence Amendment would simply deny any and all federal funding to Planned Parenthood.” “The attacks are based on Anti-choice extremists” says Planned Parenthood’s website who “do everything they can to prevent women and men from taking charge of their lives. If these radicals truly were concerned about women and families, they would work with Planned Parenthood to reduce unintended pregnancy in the first place by doing the only thing that works — increasing access to affordable birth control and
comprehensive sex education.” Although the case Roe vs. Wade legalized abortion, the subject remains controversial. From Catholic Religious leaders pushing for elimination of abortion practices, with the belief that life begin at conception, to Rougue economists, like t he Aut ho r s of t he b o ok Freakonomics, which argue that studies prove the legalization of abortion has reduced crime, including murders. As of April 4th, 2011 41 Senators opposed the GOP’s plan.

WASHINGTON, DC n an effort to cut Planned Parenthood health centers off from federal funds, the Republican and Male Majority House, passed House Resolution (H.R.) 1. Planned Parenthood provides free or low-cost community health services for cancer screenings, STD tests, birth control, and other preventive health care services for those in need. They serve nearly three million women and families nationwide each year and according to the 2010 Annual Report by Planned Parenthood Mar-Monte, there were about 552,595 visits in the San Joaquin surrounding Region. QUEENS- Un año después de firmar los documentos, John Cuartas, inmigrante colombiano de 51 años, todavía visita la casa que su familia perdió por no pagar la hipoteca. Como muchos neoyorquinos afectados por la crisis de ‘foreclosure’, Cuartas vive muy cerca de la propiedad por la cual todavía se siente muy triste. “Algunas veces, cuando paso por el frente de la casa, me siento melancólico y me detengo a mirarla”, dijo Cuartas. “Y recuerdo la esperanza que sentí cuando me entregaron las llaves en la mano. Me pregunto ¿quién vivirá ahora en su interior?”. Por tres años, entre el 2006 y el 2009, fue cuartas con su esposa, hija y dos nietos en edad escolar, quienes vivieron en esa casa de ladrillo y tablas horizontales de Woodside, Queens. Al principio fueron felices porque nunca soñaron con tener su propia casa en los Estados Unidos. Pero los pagos mensuales comenzaron a acumularse hasta llegar a $5,700 dólares, una carga demasiado pesada, inclusive para compartirla entre tres adultos que trabajan. NEW YORK—More than a year after signing it away, John Cuartas, a 51-year-old Colombian immigrant, still visits the home his family lost to foreclosure. Like many New Yorkers affected by the foreclosure crisis, Cuartas lives only a short distance away from the property he still grieves for. “Sometimes when I pass by the house I get melancholic, and I stand there and stare at it,” said Cuartas. “And I remember how hopeful I felt when they put those keys in my hand. I think to myself, ‘I wonder who lives there now?’” For three years, between 2006 and 2009, it was Cuartas, along with his wife, daughter and two school-age grandchildren, who lived in the house on a street of brick and whitewashed clapboard homes in Woodside, Queens. At first they were happy— the family had never dreamed they would have their own house in the United States. But soon the large mortgage payment, fixed at $5,700 monthly, proved too heavy a burden—even when split between three working adults. In the autumn of 2009, to head off foreclosure, Cuartas and his wife Lucrecia Duque sold for a loss of $180,000 (they had bought the property for $730,000 in the summer of 2006, the housing bubble’s peak). But their losses went much further than that. Their ill-fated home purchase and the stress of having to move into it and out of it wrecked their savings, their credit, their peace-of-mind, optimism— and their basic faith in the American economy. “We call it our American Nightmare,” said Cuartas. And Queens, where Cuartas still lives, ap-
pears to lead the city in creating the conditions for real estate nightmares of this type. In the years from 2007 to 2010, there have been 60,263 initial foreclosure filings in New York City, with Queens leading New York’s five boroughs every year in number of filings (See sidebar, pg.xx: “The Crisis in Numbers”). But the reason has nothing to do with Queens homeowners being less financially responsible than others in the city. Queens neighborhoods are full of suburbanstyle houses with a patch of lawn and a private parking space, which unlike Manhattan-style residential towers tend to be bought by ordinary working and middle class families without Donald Trump-scale financing. When the foreclosure crisis hit, it settled with particular fury on Queens. “Queens is the neighborhood with the highest density of single-family and multi-family homes and consequently it’s the borough hardest hit by foreclosures,” said Mike Hickey, executive director of the Center for New York City Neighborhoods. For similar reasons, added Hickey, “Brooklyn is not far behind.” “Foreclosures have hit like a tsunami,” said Arnold Higuita, a Century 21 real estate broker in Queens for fifteen years. “It will be at least two years before the storm passes.” Queens Latino and nonprofit news agency New America Media teamed up to trace the paths of three Latino immigrant families who lost their homes in the city’s foreclosure crisis. All three families agreed to speak about what they lived through so that others might learn from the mistakes they made. “We took a beating,” said Duque, who arrived in the United States, also from Colombia, nearly 40 years ago. The cost of this experience can’t be accounted for simply in terms dollars and interest rates. The long foreclosure process takes a heavy emotional toll on a family. As unpaid mortgage bills pile up, the strain and stress also build. And once the family home is gone— the feeling of loss can be intense. So can feelings of anger, shame, and regret. “People go through a kind of grieving process, they go through all the classic stages,” said Cathleen Clements, director of legal advocacy for The Children’s Aid Society, a New York nonprofit helping foreclosure-affected families. Muchos reconocen la fabulosa pieza de arte brillantemente en color “el alebrije” como un animal “Nagual” o su representación como espíritu o fuerza mística en la persona que lo soñó o lo escogió. En muchas familias, los hombres tallan y las mujeres pintan, pero no es una regla. El primer alebrije, adjunto al uso de su palabra, se origino con Pedro Linares. Después de soñar con las creaturas mientras el estuvo enfermo en los 1930s, el empezó a crear en cartón y papel picado lo que el vio. Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo demostraron interés sobre su trabajo. Eleazar Morales nació en Arrazola, Oaxaca en 1976. Oaxaca es conocido mundialmente por sus tallados en madera tradicionales. Morales termino su preparatoria en su pueblo y aprendió solo el arte de tallar madera. A su corta edad de 14 años, el decidió ser un artesano en madera y el emprendió su aprendizaje en este arte por medio de su trabajo como guía turística. Fue durante esta etapa que el visito estudios establecidos como el de Manuel Jiménez, y el aprendió “secretos” de esta artesanía. Pero su maestría que demuestra hoy es su mayoría su determinación. Ahora el es reconosido como uno de los artesanos en tallar madera mas talentosos en la región. Sergio Martinez es un maestro tejedor Zapoteca y el diseñador de tapices de calidad de reliquia de familia. Cada uno de sus carpetas es única tejida a mano. Sergio y su familia tejen en el estilo tradicional a preservado por generaciones cual incluye, tornear a mano, y tintes naturales. Famosos coleccionan sus tapices y disciernen a coleccionistas de tapetes a través del mundo. papier mache. His work caught the attention of the artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Linares was originally from San Antonio Arrazola, Oaxaca and on family visits, demonstrated his designs there. The Oaxaca valley area already had a history of carving animal and other types of figures from wood, and Linares’ designs were adapted to the carving of the local copal wood. Joel Garcia, is a master papier-maché artist. From the age of eleven, Joel lived and apprenticed with his brother-inlaw, Miguel Linares. He studied under Linares family scion, Pedro Linares, whose innovations elevated papier-mache from a street craft to an internationally valued art form. Joel’s creations are a revelation. He has refined his technique until his pieces have the lustre and detail of fine porcelain, but maintain a whimsy and character all their own. While respecting the traditional, he’s creating new art forms: a skeleton chair with a devil perched on the throne, experiments with combinations of animal and mythical characters. Eleazar Morales was born in Arrazola, Oaxaca, in 1976. Oaxaca is known worldwide for its woodcarving traditions. Morales completed high school in his home town and is totally self taught as a woodcarver. By the time he was 14, he knew he wanted to be a carver, and he began learning the craft through his job as a tour guide. It was during this time that he got to visit studios of established carvers like Manuel Jimenez, and he picked up some of their “secrets.” However, it was mostly through his own determination that he achieved the level of mas-

tery that he demonstrates today. He is now widely recognized as one of the most talented woodcarvers in the region. Sergio Martinez is a master Zapotec weaver and designer of heirloom quality tapestries. Each one of a kind rug is unique hand woven. Sergio and his family woven in the tradition that has persevered for generations which includes, hand spinning and dyeing with both natural and aniline dyes. Sergio’s tapestries have been collected by celebrities and discerning rug collectors throughout the world. She also serves as a commissioner of the Stockton Parks and Recreation Commission. Tracy-resident Mercedes Rea Silveira-Gouveia is a retired educator of 28 years and longtime community advocate for Latino and educational issues. In 1991, Silveira-Gouveia was selected to serve on a statewide team to analyze California’s K-12 education and make recommendations to the California State Legislature. Since becoming an American citizen in 1972, she has also been an active volunteer in races for various local, state, federal offices. She is currently an elected member of the San Joaquin County Democratic Central Committee (District 5), and a member of the Democratic Club of Greater Tracy and Latina Democratic Club of San Joaquin. Wol k is honor i ng Manteca-resident Carol Davis
for her years of service with numerous community groups on youth, education, and other issues. She is the president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Give Every Child A Chance (GECAC), an organization that provides tutoring and mentoring programs at many schools in San Joaquin County. She joined the group after working for 25 years at Kaiser Permanente. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the San Joaquin County Children’s Services Coordinating Commission, as well as the Manteca Sunrise Kiwanis, and is the chief financial officer for Manteca Unified Student Trust. Mary Kennedy-Bracken, a Tracy resident honored for her work in Lathrop, is the CEO and President of the Lathrop District Chamber of Commerce. She has served three consecutive terms as president, and is recognized for her work with the chamber to encourage economic development in Lathrop. Kennedy-Bracken also works as a motivational speaker and public speaking coach as the owner and CEO of Turn Your Passion into Profit. She is the vice president of the public relations for
the Lathrop Talented Talkers, a local Toastmasters club. “As the state struggles to provide services in the face of a historic budget deficit and economic recession, these women’s ongoing service plays a critical role in the health of our communities,” Wolk concluded.

Through the evening his message was constant — never give-up. “When I was defeated out of the Supreme Court I was clear about loosing in politics but never defeated as a person,” Reynoso explained his continual battle for social justice post his defeat out of the Supreme Court Seat. Reynoso and two other justices lost their seat in a heated recall campaign which used the death penalty as the central issues. Reynoso received the country’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton, for his lifelong devotion to public service. He presently teaches law at the University of California (UC) Davis, Law School and continues to actively participate in community organizations throughout the State of California. “The only way to equality is through education.” Reynoso concluded the night by addressing the future of civil rights.

Message from Japan: Finding the Way to Life Fr. Dean McFalls Last Friday, one week following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan March 11th, I heard a fascinating broadcast. A fisherman had been out to sea just before the disaster stuck. Noticing whirlpools in the water, he headed for shore and ran to his home. By then, the sirens were blaring and the villagers were already evacuating toward the hills. Driving as fast as he could, without time even to save his most valuable property, he fell quickly in line with the vehicles ascending the principal route out of town. The procession arrived at a fork in the road. Everyone veered left, as that was the fastest way to refuge. However, something inside him urged the old man to steer right. This less-travelled road didn’t offer the rapid ascent that the easier one did, but it had one great advantage. It had no traffic. Reaching safe haven, the fortunate fisherman looked back to witness a most horrible sight: the monstrous wave had risen out of the sea from which he had just minutes before escaped. It lunged through the seaside community, crushing everything in its path, then rose to devour the other vehicles - to destroy, that is, his friends and neighbors who had chosen the wider route.
Hearing this tragic story, I couldn’t help but reflect on the words of Jesus: the path to life is narrow and difficult, and few there are that go that way. In the case of the unfortunate Japanese, of course, this saying has no direct application. Many good and holy people have died and are suffering. But in terms of the graphic reminder for us to go the right way as we make our ascent to a better life, to choose not the wider path, but the one which the Holy Spirit whispers when we listen carefully to his voice within, to follow not the crowd but rather to seek what is righteous and most obedient, these lessons came blaring out of that simple story as loud as the tsunami sirens. Such a warning had already been given in Japan, nearly thirty years before. The Catholic News Agency published on March 12, 2011, “Japanese Quakes Epicenter Located Near Marian Apparition Site,” an article which describes the sobering truth that Mary had appeared to warn of disaster. The article states, “In 1973, the Virgin Mary was said to have predicted a number of future events - including natural disasters even more serious than Friday’s earthquake and tsunami - during three appear-
ances to a Japanese religious sister, Sr. Agnes Sasagawa. Dean McFalls El Viernes Pasado, una semana después del devastador terremoto y tsunami de Japon el 11 de Marso, escuche una transmisión fascinante. Un pescador se encontraba en altamar antes de que el desastre ocurriera. El se dirigio a la costa y corrio a su casa después de ver molinos en el agua. Para ese entonces, las cirenas ya sonavan y todos estavan evacuando asia lo alto de las lomas. Manejo lo mas rapido que pudo, no tuvo tiempo de salvar ni lo mas valioso de su propiedad, se encontro con el trafico que se alineo en la avenida principal en ruta fuera del pueblo. La procesión llego a una separacion en la carretera. Todos se dirigian a la hizquierda ya que era el camino mas corto para encontrar refugio. Pero, un instinto interno dirigio al anciano a manejar hacia la derecha. Esta vereda cual no se radicaba comúnmente no le
ofrecio un camino rapido en comparación a el otro mas facil, pero si una gran ventaja. No tentia trafico. En cuanto el llego a una area asalvo, el afortunado pescador vio hacia atraz y fue testigo de un momento horrible: una hola mounstrosa se levantaba por ensima del mar en del cual el se avia escapado. Se lanzaba contra la comunidad en la costa, quebrantando todo en su camino, después se levantaba a devorar otros vehículos — a destruir, refiriéndose, a sus amigos y vecinos que habían decidido por el camino ancho. Al escuchar esta trágica historia, no pude detenerme en pensar en las palabras de Jesus: el camino a la vida es estrecho y difícil, y pocos serán los que caminen por el. En el caso de este desafortunado Japonés, claro, estas palabras no tienen implicación directa. Muchas personas buenas y venditas sufren y otros murieron. Pero en términos del recuerdo grafico para nosotros que debemos tomar el camino derecho cual nos asciende a una mejor vida, el no escojer el camino ancho, pero el que nos recomienda el Espiritu Santo cuando escuchamos con detalle su voz interna, el seguir lo justo y obediente no las moltitudes. Esta leccion salto fuerte mente despues de escuchar los sonidos de las sirenas por el tsunami. Japon ya avia sido albertido hace 30 años. IS GOD TESTING AMERICA? Thomas Benigno Former elected Republican Central Committee member
I thought I would write on this subject to get some feedback from our readers. Is America being tested or is the world just falling apart? It seems as though every day something new is happening around the world. The wars we are fighting in the middle east and the earth quakes in Japan, the tsunamis all over the world, floods, tornados, hurricanes, people killing each other and so on. The point that I’m trying to make is every time there is a world disaster, the U.S. is there to help. We are spending billions on wars to keep the peace all over the world but America has a problem. We don’t have the money to fix our own problems, as in Katrina, 5 years later and no rebuilding. Now we see the effects of the Japan earthquake on American soil. When will other countries help America in our time of crisis? When was the last time any other country helped us out of a mess? In the past we were a
country that every other country looked up to for help. Now we are no longer the country we once were because we have exhausted our resources to the limit. We cannot continue to help support other countries because of the trade barriers that have cut our GNP (Gross National Product) to the bone. We need to try and expand our gross national product by creating more business over here rather than importing products from other countries and sending jobs overseas. We need to expand our products around the world as we have done for decades. Many say we need to support the global economy but it’s not working because we need to have the jobs here to keep America ahead of the other countries in GNP. When we become another third world country we will fall apart. As we can see now there are no real money making jobs in America. Whose fault is that? It’s the mega corporate companies that want a better bottom line by hiring employees from other countries. In the meantime, our citizens are without jobs and the wars continue bleeding Americans of their right to have a job, a home, a family and some quality of life. As we can see, the latest
disaster in Fukushima Japan will take billions of dollars to rebuild that area, not including the melt downs from the nuclear energy plants. At this point we can’t afford to run two wars and help fund the disasters all over the world. Where will this money come from? We could take title of their country as in collateral for loans as they did to us for the last 60 years, but who wants a thrashed country? To borrow from Peter to pay Paul economics, that has been going on for decades and must now stop. Can we risk loosing other countries as friends? We must take that risk to save our own skin at this point. Many believe that we can create jobs by supporting wars and support every disaster that occurs all over the world. Don’t believe it. The reason we are in such bad shape is that we feel we have to help all those that are in need all over the world and if we help others GOD will help America. It’s not for me to say that concept is wrong, but we need to know why America needs to be the leader of the world and yet be one of the weakest leaders in the eyes of the world on domestic issues. We need to be strong for those who came here looking for a dream, and now see nothing but despair all around America. Since the 911 attack we have bent to the ills of the world and not to those who are supporting the cause for America and GOD.

At first I thought for sure someone was really pulling the wool over my eyes, but WOW! it really is true, but where are the news outlets? I am speaking about the most conservative state in the United States taking the bold step of creating the Utah Guest Worker Program for Undocumented Immigrants. Who would have thought? To me it just makes sense. This program is not what most pundits would like you to believe as the path to amnesty. What it does do is tell the Federal Government it is time to come up with a solution for ALL undocumented workers not just those with brown pigment colored skin. I applaud Governor Gary Herbert, a Republican for forcing the issue. Texas is considering the same type of legislation as well as other states waiting in the wings to jump on board. The one thing all of these states will have to contend with is how is President Obama will provide a waiver to enable Utah to allow undocumented immigrants in the state currently living without legal permission. Utah has been affected badly as has California and
Texas by undocumented workers taking jobs that every wonderfully able and legal unemployed person is dying to work at, but alas the undocumented have these pristine jobs. As I previously wrote, I do not see long lines at the entrance to the fields with people begging to work there. The other day I asked several unemployed people of different skin hues that McDonalds was hiring. Imagine my surprise at their reactions. You would have thought I was asking them to run down busy March Lane stark naked. There was no way they would do such menial jobs. Needless to say I did not ask them if they would be a field worker or housekeeper. This past weekend I attended a meeting where more than one speaker talked about all the jobs undocumented workers were taking. Also, all the costs associated with the caring and keeping of undocumented people. Taxes are paid when groceries and goods are purchased. I am not saying it is okay for undocumented people to be here, but a solution has to be found and I applaud the state where I grew up in being bold enough to at least try and make some sense. Amnesty is not the answer, but we need to start somewhere so a huge big thank you to Utah.

Ase poco le pregunte a varias personas desempleadas sobre los diferentes tonos de piel que McDonalds esta contratando. Imagínense mi sorpresa al ver sus reacciones. Ustedes se imaginarían que yo les pedí que corrieran por la avenida March Lane en cueros. No habría forma que ellos ejercieran esos trabajos de criados. No me atreví a preguntar si ellos trabajaran en el campo o haciendo la limpieza en casa. Este fin de semana fui a una junta donde mas de un orador hablo sobre los empleos que los indocumentados están haciendo. También todos los costos asociados con el cuidar y mantener a personas indocumentadas. Impuestos se pagan cuando comestibles y productos son comprados. No digo que esta bien que la gente este indocumentada aquí, pero hay que tener una solución y aplaudo al estado en el que yo crecí por ser firmes y por lo menos tratar de hacer algo con sentido. Amnistía no es la solución, pero necesitamos iniciar en algún lado así que un gran agradecimiento a Utah.

The CVS store on Kettleman Drive in Lodi, CA is disrespectful to its customers. On Saturday and Sunday I visited this named CVS store and needed to use the men’s room. Both toilets were filthy and backed up. They were impossible to use. There were paper towels on the floor. The men’s room was in an unhealthy state. To me this shows an utter disrespect for their patrons. If they don’t hire a janitor or a janitorial service I’m sure it contributes to compensation of the CEO
la ayuda que proporcionábamos. Ahora no somos el país que éramos puesto que hemos agotado los recursos al límite. No podemos continuar la ayuda a otros países porque los límites de intercambio han recortado nuestra GNP (Producción Nacional) al mínimo. Necesitamos expander nuestra producción nacional creando mas negocio interno en ves de importar productos de otros países y mandar trabajos fuera del país. Necesitamos expander nuestros productos alrededor del mundo como lo hemos hecho por décadas. Muchos dicen que hay que apoyar una economía global pero eso no esta trabajando porque necesitamos el empleo para mantener nuestra producción nacional delante de otros países. Cuando nos convirtamos en otro país tercermundista nos desintegraremos. Como podemos ver ahora no hay empleos con saldos reales en America. ¿A quien debemos culpar? Son las mega-corporaciones empresariales que desean un mejor ingreso a base de contratar trabajadores de otros países. En el intertanto, nuestros ciudadanos no tienen empleos y las guerras continúan desangrando a los Americanos del derecho a obtener un empleo, un hogar, una familia y algo de calidad de vida. Podemos hipotecar nuestro país como garantía colateral para préstamos como nosotros lo hicimos con otros durante los últimos 60-años; pero, ¿quien quiere un país de basura? Economía de préstamos de uno para el otro, que han pasado y ahora deben de parar. ¿Podremos arriesgar el perder a otros países como amigos? Tenemos que tomar ese riesgo para salvar nuestro pellejo ahora. Muchos creen que podemos crear empleos al apoyar guerras y apoyar cada desastre que ocurre en el mundo. No lo crea. La razón por la cual estamos en tan mal estado es porque creemos que tenemos la obligación de ayudar a todo el que necesita por todos lados del mundo y si ayudamos a otros Dios nos ayudara. No esta bien que diga que ese concepto esta mal, pero necesitamos saber porque America necesita ser el líder mundial pero estar tan débil en temas nacionales. Necesitamos ser fuertes para aquellos que llegaron aquí con un sueño, y ahora ven solo ven desesperación en America. Desde los ataques del 911 nos hemos doblegado a las necesidades del mundo y no a aquellos que apoyan la causa de America y Dios.

Para mi esto representa falta de respeto para sus clientes. Local Fighter Participates Televised Strikeforce Match Blingual Weekly STOCKTON, CA - Strikeforce — A full-contact mixed martial arts challenge brings national attention to Stockton Arena. Zuka LLC, parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), presented Strikeforce in the card were fighters form around the region who challenged each other during the evening of April 1st in hopes to take another step in the ranks. The main event was between Justin Wilcox from San Jose who knocked-out Rodrigo Damm from Brazil — following a doctors’ request. Stockton’s Josh Thornburg was defeated by San Jose’s James Terry. The Mexican ar tist and writer, Xokonoschtletl Gomora, (Xoko) explained the “deep” meaning of the Motecuhzoma’s crown at a conference held on Friday, March 25 at La Comission Honorifica Mexicana (Honorable Mexican Commission) known as La Jamaica in Stockton. “The crown represents the political, economic and spiritual power of Mexican natives, pre-
ceding the presidential sash, as the hair dressing was handed down among each Aztec Emperors as they reached the throne.” Explained Xoko. Xoko has fought for more than 30-years for the return of the Aztec Emperor’s crown to Mexico. The crown was fabricated of quetzal feathers set in gold and precious stones. Currently the Ethnology Museum in Vienna, Austria holds the right to the crown, since 1520. In his 30-year journey Xoko has visited many parts of the world imploring for the return of the Motecuhzoma’s Crown to its native land — Mexico. His
strongest petitions have been in Austria, Germany, and he has petitioned support to the United Nations (UN). In his presentation Gomora noted that, “Finally, it seems like this will be the year,” for the hair dressing’s return. With enthusiasm Gomora visited Stockton and is touring California in search of political and economic support. Along with his petition for support he carries a message and personal goal to educate others about Mexico’s history, heritage and culture. “Xoko information offers about Mexican culture refreshes our knowledge of history that we loose gradually when we leave our country,” said Ismael Cortez, Director of Cultural Events at La Jamaica. As the year unfolds Bilingual Weekly will be closely following Motecuhzoma’s hair dressing upon the return of Xoko. Xoko promised to return to Stockton, “We are here to form a bridge between Mexicans here [in the United States] and the ones over there [Mexico],” said Xoko.
