Acceso a control de natalidad aumenta en California California - el sábado 23 de septiembre, el gobernador Brown firmó la propuesta de Ley (Assembly Bill—AB) 2348 una enmienda de ley que aumenta el acceso a métodos anticonceptivos para miles de mujeres en Califor nia, al per mitir que enfermeras dispensen anticonceptivos hormonales auto-administrados. Este año, Planned Parenthood (Planeación de Familia) y California Family Hea lt h Council (Consejo de S a lud de Fa m i l i a en C a l i for n ia) pat r o c i nó el proye c to de le y que f ue presentado por la asambleísta de Holly Mitchell. Al acceder la firma del gobernador Brown el control de la natalidad será más accesible para miles de mujeres en California. “En un momento en que algunos tratan de retroceder el tiempo y restr ingir las opciones de salud para las mujeres, California proporciona acceso a los métodos anticonceptivos y reafirma los derechos de la mujer”, dijo Brown. Upon Governor Brown’s signature access to birth control will become more accessible for thousands of women in California. “At a time when some tr y to turn time back and restrict health options for women, California provides access to contraception and reaffirms w o m a n r i g h t s ,” s t a t e d Brown. Current law allows reg i stere d nu r se s (R Ns) work ing in pr imar y care clinics to dispense drugs or other devices only upon an order by a physician or a surgeon. This bill expanded the number of practitioners under whose orders an RN may dispense medications to include Certified Nurse Midwives, Nurse Practitioners and Physician s Assistants. AB 2348, the Access to Birth Control Bill, also would authorize RNs in community clinics to dispense hormonal bir th control under a sta nda rd ized procedure. Allowing RNs to dispense self-administered hormonal contraceptives like the pill, patch, ring and shot makes sense given the proven safety of birth control and its wide use throughout the world. Town hall focuses on how to close the Latino education gap and prepare students to meet challenges of an ever-evolving future labor market WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, NCLR (National Council of La Raza) President and CEO Janet MurguĂa and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan hosted a town hall meeting about Latinos and education at the Metropolitan City College in Kansas City, Mo. The town hall is the latest stop on the “Education Drives Americaâ€? bus tour, a U.S. Department of Education initiative which highlights important educational issues including school reform, student retention, and early childhood education. Today’s discussion focused on Latino students, who represent 23 percent of the nation’s schoolchildren. “Latinos are vital to the future success and economic strength of this nation; their contributions to the labor force will help determine how competitive our nation remains in the world,â€? said MurguĂa. “It is fundamental that we ensure their fair shot at a high-quality education which will enable them to meet future challenges and fill future jobs.â€? Recent Census numbers show that by 2050, Latinos will represent one-third of the nation’s workforce—all the more reason to focus on Latino educational success today. Latinos students continue to lag at the bottom of the achievement gap. Only 63 percent of Latino students are graduating from high school in four years, compared to 78 percent of White students. Studies show that the achievement gap begins early in life—less than half of all Latino fouryear-olds attend preschool, which puts them behind their counterparts when entering kindergarten and ultimately places them at risk for poor academic and social outcomes. “We must lay the foundation for success early in life, and a critical part of that is access to high-quality preschool programs for Latinos,â€? added MurguĂa. “We also need to raise the bar for our elementary, middle, and high school students— we must set high standards, accurately monitor student learning, and provide effective instruction for all students, including English language learners.â€? Common Core State Standards, teacher effectiveness, and school reform were among the topics also discussed during the hour-long town hall. Un nuevo estudio analiza la conducta de fumadores en México y entre MexicanoAmericanos Sacramento, CA — Liderado por investigadores de UC D av i s , el pr i mer estudio transnacional de fumadores y la migración de México a Estados indica que los mexicano-americanos nacidos en Estados Unidos empiezan a f umar a más temprana edad pero tienen más probabilidades de dejar el hábito que sus pares en México. Recién publicado en la Revista Americana de Salud Pública, el estudio de los cambios relacionados a la migración en la conducta de los fumadores también indica que si bien la probabilidad de empezar y dejar de fumar varía dramáticamente con la migración de México a Estados Unidos, el número de cigarr illos que los fumadores consumen por día es relativamente similar. Los mexicano-americanos tienen más probabilidades de empezar y dejar de fumar que la gente en México, pero en un d ía promed io, los mexicano-americanos que fuman consumen sólo un pocos cigarrillos más que los mexicanos que fuman. En contraste, la cantidad de cigarrillos que los mexicanoamericanos fuman por día es aproximadamente la mitad de lo que f uman por día los fumadores blancos no hispanos en Estados Unidos. A new study examines the behavior of smokers among people from Mexico and Mexican Americans Sacramento, CA - Led by researchers at UC Davis, the first study of smoking and transnational migration from Mexico to the United states and that of Mexican A mer icans bor n in t he United States start smoking at a younger age but are more likely to quit t heir counterparts in Mexico. Just published in t he American Journal of Public Health, the study of migrationrelated changes in smoking behavior also indicates that wh i le t he probabi l it y of starting and quitting smoking var ies dramatically w ith migration from Mexico to the United States, the number of cigarettes that smokers consume per day is relatively similar. Mexican-Americans are more likely to start and quit smoking that people in Mexico, but on an average day, Mexican Americans who smoke cigarettes consume only a few more that Mexicans who smoke. In contrast, the number of cigarettes smoked Mexican Americans per day is about half of what smokers smoked per day non-Hispanic whites in the United States. Cigarette smoking among Mexican Americans remains a significant public health problem, despite the relatively low level of cigaret tes consumed per day. “Ever yone in A mer ica is smoking much less than before,” said the study’s lead author, Elisa Tong, associate professor in the Department of I nter n a l Me d ic i ne at UC Davis, who specializes in research snuff control. “But even cigarette lighters consumption is a risk factor for cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases.” Tong added that “while

Such st ud ie s help us to understand the cultural and psychological factors that play a role in smoking cessation, so that can develop effective public health programs to get more people in this population quit. “ The research team, led by principal investigator Joshua Breslau, now a researcher at the R AND Corporation in Pittsburgh, PA, is composed of researchers from both Me x i c o a nd t he Un i t e d States. “We have learned a lot by st udy ing t he changes i n phy sic a l, ment a l a nd behavioral problems associated with migration,” said Breslau. “In this study, was particularly valuable to observe a migrant population in his country of origin and the country adopted”. Combining several population studies in both countries, the team examined the differences in starting and quitting smoking and ciga ret te consumpt ion a mong d a i ly smokers in a number of groups w ith increasing contact with the United States. The groups ra nge d f rom Mex ic a n s without family connection to migration at one end of the spectrum to Mexican Americans born in the United States on t he ot her. The surveys included thousands of participants on both sides of the border as part of a series of epidemiological studies in psychology between 2001 and 2003. The study was supported primarily by the National Institute of Mental Health

LatinaLista — A new study released by the black youth project titled Turning Back the Clock on Voting Rights: The Impact of New Photo Identification Requirements on Young People of Color adds one more voice to the chorus of organizations, academics, politicians and individuals sounding the alarm to the threat against the voting rights of segments of the populations already considered disenfranchised. Claiming that ineligible voters or undocumented immigrants were supposedly casting votes in elections, states, with predominantly Republican state legislatures, passed laws requiring voters to show certain forms of ID — even though no proof has been presented to show that the voting process is being abused by people who are ineligible to vote. However, in court case after court case, these laws are being overturned. Last month, U.S. courts rejected election-related laws passed by Republican-controlled legislatures in Ohio, Florida and Texas, finding they violated the right to vote. At least 14 cases challenging voter-list purges, provisionalballot rules, early voting curbs or photo identification mandates are pending in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Iowa, Florida and Ohio. Court rulings in those states, which both parties claim they can win in November, could tip the presidential election if the race is as close as it was in 2000 between Al Gore and George W. Bush, said Rick Hasen, a law professor at the University of California, Irvine. In fact, a new NBC poll released tonight shows that President Obama leads Mitt Romney 4-5 percentage points in key swing states of Florida, Virginia and Ohio. However, the fact that there are still legislators who would play with citizens’ right to vote to score political wins is unAmerican and repulsive, though it’s been happening, in one form or another, in pockets of the country for as long as the electoral process has been in place. According to the black youth project report: Numerous studies show that people of color possess photo identification cards at much lower rates than whites. Because young people and lower-income people are also less likely to have photo identification, young people of color are likely to be disproportionately demobilized by these laws. The report goes on to say that in those states that still have Voter ID laws on their books, turnout for young people of color could be reduced between 538,000 and 696,000. Those are a lot of votes to be denied but more importantly, a lot of citizens whose rights will be violated. Pennsylvania is the next state where voter id laws are being scrutinized by the courts. The black youth project report states that “if Pennsylvania’s photo identification law is upheld by the State Supreme Court, the 37,000 to 44,000 young people of color who may stay home or be denied the right to vote could certainly be a deciding factor in the state’s presidential contest.” While most people, a.k.a. car drivers, don’t see what the big deal is for people not to have a photo ID, University of Washington political scientist Matt Baretto has found that more than 1 million registered voters don’t have a valid form of ID that would qualify to be used as a Voter ID. As more young people turn 18 and gain the right to vote and the economy continues its snail pace of improvement making it difficult if not impossible for these new voters to secure a photo ID that is acceptable as a form of Voter ID, it’s a safe bet that young people of color will be denied their right to vote in those states that insist on playing with the political freedoms of the next generation — and setting a very bad precedent in the process. Cirque Du Soleil visita Stockton por Dralion: Cirque du Soleil to visit primera vez Stockton for the first time STOCK TON, CA- La mundialmente reconocida compañía canadiense, Cirque du Soleil, lista para cautivar la audiencia de Stockton con su espectáculo en gira, “Dralion”. L a pr o duc c ión de do s hora s y me d ia, Dra l ion, una f usión de ar te china y occidental estará en la Arena de Stockton con siete presentaciones, las cuales comienzan el miércoles, 17 de octubre al domingo 21 de octubre. Creado en 1999, el Cirque du Soleil, es también conocida por sus v ibrantes trajes. Aunque, nuevos trajes son continuamente fabricados, Dralion cuenta con cerca de 1,500 piezas de vestuario y ac c e s or io s i nc luyendo sombreros, además 300 pa re s de zapatos que se limpian y pintan a mano cada semana. Más allá de los coloridos vestuarios, el elenco de cincuenta y cuatro artistas llevan al escenario asombrosos saltos y giros. STOCKTON, CA- The world known Canadian company, Cirque du Soleil, is set to captivate Stockton with its touring show, “Dralion.” The two-and-a-half hour production, Dralion, a fusion of Chinese and Western art and acrobatic elements, will be at the Stockton Arena for seven performances starting on Wednesday, October 17 to Sunday, October 21. Created in 1999, the Cirque du Soleil, is also known for its vibrant costumes. Although new costumes are continuously made, Dralion has close to 1,500 costume pieces including hats and accessories and over 300 pairs of shoes which are cleaned and painted by hand every week. But besides multicolored costumes, the cast of fiftyfour performers take over the stage with breathtaking flips and spins. A mong the world-w ide performers that challenge gravity and twist their bodies into something other than human is the Spanish, Alex Cuanca. At a very young age Cuenca was interested in gymnastics, a sport that requires physical strength, flexibility, agility, coordinat ion, speed and balance. In the years to follow Cuenca`s strength and agility led him to compete in major national, European and world championships. And so after twenty years competing in the national Spanish trampoline team, he joined the Cirque du Soleil troupe in 2008 as a trampoline artist; since then he is been
touring the world with the cirque. “When you compete at the level I was competing, you train a lot, is very stressful, here [Cirque du Soleil] is more relaxed and there is less pressure because I am not competing,” says Cuenca as he describes his transition from athlete to artist and performer. As a performer there is no judges, there is no winning or losing is only the public, their adrenaline and energy as they applaud. Cuanca`s trampoline act lasts ten minutes. “This act requires a lot of training; I was at the Cirque du Soleil in Montreal for four months preparing especially this show.” Is t hat moment, ever y performance, just before the lights officially go on to jump 7 feet high, my heart beats so fast I feel like it’s coming out of my chest, says Cuenca. “I always say that the day I do a show and my heart is not beating as fast, that day I will realize that I don’t have to be here anymore.” Because Cuenca is known for sense of humor and for making others laugh, his warm-up before a show consists of a few stretches and some laughs. For Cuenca, nothing brings your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh, and so he puts everyone in the right frame of mind. “Dralion is a complete show where the public is going to see a lot of acrobats, they will see clowns will see, is a show for all ages, with lots of light.”

Para Cuenca, una buena r isa trae a la mente y a l cuerpo equilibrio, y es así que pone a todos en la dirección correcta. “Dralion es un espectáculo completo donde el público va a ver un montón de acróbatas, payasos, es un espectáculo para todas las edades, con una gran cantidad de luz.”
