A nthony Silva Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club. “We have about 80 kids on any given day,” said Silva, “some of the kids are from around the neighborhood and every day we go and pick up a van full of kids from the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless.” Among the many kids, who waited in line patiently to receive a present and to take a picture with Santa, was five-year-old Mark Berrihill. “This year I asked to get a red car,” said Berrihill after taking his picture with Santa.
The majority of the gifts are donated, “A local church donated some of the presents and then we went to buy the rest,” said Silva. The donated gifts gave the kids and families something they wouldn’t otherwise have at this time of year. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Stockton is a not-forprofit agency that operates 25 d if ferent loc at ions throughout the Stockton area —many of the clubs ser ve as af ter school programs throughout the Stockton Unif ied School District.

Exhibición de Nacimientos y Posada Tradicional en Centro de Herencia Stockton, CA — mas de 200 personas comunitarias se reunieron frente la Iglesia Santa María para participar en una Posada; una procesión cual culminaría en la exhibición de nacimientos del Centro de Herencia Mexicana y Galería (conocido por sus cifras en ingles MHC&G). En un recorrido de 8 cuadras los participantes corearon canciones tradicionales de posadas en una peregrinación que actuó el recorrido de María y José — un recorrido narrado en la Biblia Católica en la cual la pareja encuentra el pesebre en el cual Jesús Nació. Las posadas tradicionalmente inician 9 días antes de Navidad, “Yo retrocedí a una temporada no muy lejana en mi vida, en la cual yo era un niño cantando y disfrutando toda la comida de la temporada,” compartió el fotógrafo Arturo Vera. Ahora que el Centro de Herencia Mexicano y Galería se reubico en el área del centro de Stockton, “estamos cerca de la Iglesia Sta. María distancia que nos da la flexibilidad de elaborar posadas en una forma tradicional,” explico Connie Martínez, Coordinadora del evento. Cuando la procesión llego a MHC&G, afiliados de la organización tenían preparado una bienvenida calurosa para los peregrinos con tamales, pan dulce, chocolate, café, y otros comestibles tradicionales; incluso la tradicional colación para los niños. “Todo en el Nacimiento de nuestra familia fue echo a mano,” comento Gilbert Olivas, escultor artista del MHC&G. Nativity Scene Exhibit and Traditional Posadas at Heritage Center Stockton, CA — over 200 community members gathered in front Saint Mary’s Church to participate in a “Posada” (a tradition that celebrates the birth of Jesus); a procession which would culminate at the Mexican Heritage Center and Gallery’s (MHC&G) nativity scene exhibit. Participants chanted traditional posada songs in an 8-block pilgrimage that reenacted Mary and Joseph’s journey — a journey narrated on the Christian Bible which leads the couple to the find shelter for Jesus to be born. Las posadas is a tradition that starts 9 days before Christmas, “I was taken back to a not too far time in my life, as a young child singing and eating all the wonderful food of the season,” shared photographer Arturo Vera. Now that the Mexican Heritage Center and Gallery relocated to the downtown Stockton area, “we are near St. Mary’s Church giving us the flexibility to have posadas in a traditional way,” explained Connie Martinez,
coordinator of the event. As the procession arrived at MHC&G, the organization members had a warm welcome for those in the pilgrimage with tamales, pan dulce (Mexican pastries) chocolate, coffee, and other traditional holiday foods; including traditional Mexican candy for the children. Inside the gallery, 15 nativity scenes had been built by community members, organizations, and members of various catholic parishes. “Everything in our family’s Nativity set was handmade,” noted Gilbert Olivas, sculpture artist of the MHC&G. The nativity scene exhibit is scheduled to be available for public viewing until January 6, 2012. MHC&G is open Tuesday thru Saturday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM except on Christmas Eve and New Year eve. The gallery is located at 111 S. Sutter Street, Stockton, CA in the corner of Market and Sutter Streets at the Masonic Temple Association. Access to the exhibit is free.

tribute them,” said Alejandra as she collaborated with Gutierrez and nearly 50 others. “It is just one big family coming together for one purpose,” noted Steve. For the past 35 years, the Christmas Food Basket Program seeks to make a difference for families by providing a Christmas dinner during the winter holidays. “One of the things LULAC has been effective is in being consistent, doing the same thing and been able to adjust over the years,” added Gutierrez. “When the leadership changes and a new generation steps up I’m sure this program will continue.” LULAC has provided food baskets for over 24,500 families since its program began.

El poner tijeras en el cabello de alguien es una gran responsabilidad sobre todo sabiendo que el nuevo corte de pelo será parte de su personalidad. Cliente tras cliente puede parecer una rutina fastidiosa, pero ciertamente no es el caso de la estilista, Frances Hernández, propietaria del salón de belleza Frances en Stockton. A la edad de 15 Hernández se graduó de una escuela de belleza en la ciudad de México y se mudó a California poco después. Durante diez años trabajó en los campos y en empaques de cebolla y de apio. “Siempre me cuestione, ¿qué hago yo aquí si tengo una carrera.” Hernández sabía que tenía que volver a la escuela y se enfrentaba a varios retos en el camino, empezando por un lenguaje el cual desconocía. “Entonces me fui a la escuela a aprender ingles por dos años” Después de aprender el idioma, pronto se inscribió oficialmente en la escuela de belleza de nuevo. Con poco o ningún dinero que ella asumió el reto y empezó a buscar los recursos para reparar y abrir su salón de belleza. “Tuve clientas que sus esposos eran plomero, electricistas, y mis clientas mismas se ofrecieron a que sus esposos vinieran y me ayudaran, a cambio tu me arreglas mi pelo a ellas y a su familia” Cuando sólo tenía 27 años abrió su salón.
Hair stylists have a tough job. Lying scissors on someone’s head is a big responsibility especially knowing that the hairstyle will be a part of their personality. Client after client might seem like a tedious routine, but is certainly not the case for hairstylist, Frances Hernandez, owner of Frances Beauty Salon in Stockton. At the age of 15 Hernandez graduated from a beauty in school in Mexico City and moved to California right after. For ten years worked in the fields and onion and celery packing sheds. “I always questioned myself, what am I doing here if I have a career,” says Hernandez. Hernandez knew she had to go back to school and faced several challenges along the way starting with a language that was unknown to her. “And so I went to school for two years to learn English “ After learning the language, soon she was officially enrolled in beauty school again. With little or no money
she took on the challenge and started looking for the resources to fix and open her beauty salon. “I had clients that their husband was a plumber, electricians and they offered that their husbands would come and help me in exchange of me doing hair for them and their families.” When she was only 27 years old she opened her salon. She was at the same location for 34 years and recently moved next door, with the goal to expand her salon which is now twice as big as it used to be. “I love my job, getting ready to come every morning” There is a perception that hair stylists are the modern day therapist. “Just the fact that they come, we listen to them, we fix their hair, they leave happy and sometimes forget that they came feeling concerned,” says Hernandez. Beyond beauty and hairspray Hernandez spends her free time helping those in need, distributing sweaters, food baskets and even cooking for those less fortunate.

Saludos en Cristo, Luz de el Mundo, nació en Belén, promesa de paz para las personas caminando en la obscuridad. Espero que esto los encuentre con bien. Este sábado, en Nochebuena, marca 150 años desde que la iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción fue dedicada. Como la Iglesia mas antigua del valle de San Joaquín, y como una de las iglesias mas significantes en el Oeste de los EEUU, la Santa María a tenido un papel vital a desempeñar en Stockton y en Centro de California en las ultimas 15 décadas. Hemos heredado un legado lleno de dignidad, de beneficio historial, y relevancia a las vidas de innumerables individuos. Estamos celebrando un legado en las nueve misas de Navidad este Sábado y Domingo. Nuestra liturgia, grande o mas humilde, estará llena de gratitud y con esperanza de felicidad para los años que vienen. Al mismo tiempo, estaremos auto prometiendo como comunidad de fe a trabajar colectivamente por parte de esta parroquia, de esta iglesia, y para todos aquellos que necesitan nuestra ayuda. Santa María no es más que tabique y emplaste si ustedes, sus afiliados y amigos, no están comprometidos a participar con su evangelio. Por el otro lado, unidos con nuestro Dios y entre nosotros, haremos cosas grandiosas. Lograremos lo que se considera imposible. Me refiere al sobresalir de nuestras divisiones historial y desentendidos entre los diferentes grupos de la parroquia y celebrar, en vez, de diversificar a nuestra gente y compartir los diferentes regalos que tenemos. Contribute in its Restoration Greetings in Christ, Light of the world, born for us in Bethlehem, promise of peace to a people walking in darkness. I hope this finds you doing well. This Saturday, Christmas Eve, marks 150 years since the church building of Saint Mary of the Assumption was dedicated. As San Joaquin Valley’s oldest church, and as one of the most significant parishes in the Western United States, Saint Mary’s has served a vital role for Stockton and Central California for fifteen decades. We have inherited a legacy full of dignity, of historical wealth, and of relevance to the lives of countless individuals. We are celebrating that legacy in all of our nine Christmas masses this Saturday and Sunday. Our liturgies, larger or more humble, will be pregnant with gratitude and with joyful expectation of even better years to come. At the same time, we will be pledging ourselves as a community of faith to work together on behalf of this parish, of this church, and of all those who need our assistance. St. Mary’s is nothing but brick and plaster if you, her members and her friends, are not committed to do your part for the gospel. On the other hand, united with our God and with one another, we will do amazing
things. We can accomplish what has been considered impossible. I’m referring to overcoming our historic divisions and misunderstandings among various groups in the parish and celebrating, rather, the diversity of our people and the great variety of gifts we have to share. I’m speaking of reconciliation and a renewed spirit of collaboration. I’m dreaming of that most ambitious of projects which we have just launched: the renovation of our church building, so desperately in need of repair and restoration to its original dignity -even if in a new way that reflects the theology of today. Some say the world will be ending in one year, 12/21/12. I say that the world of St. Mary’s is just beginning, as we journey into the next 50 years. These may be the shortest days of the year, but for us they’re an opportunity to look forward to ever-increasing light. Christmas Eve commemorates 150 years since the dedication of our parish church. Thank you for being a part (for some of you, a vital, faithful and generous part) of our community. As pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption, I ask you to also play your role in our church’s future. Posada en Centro de Herencia Mexicana Gracias a todos los que hicieron la posada de la Iglesia Sta. Maria al Centro de Herencia Mexicana. Ese fue en un bonito evento que ojala lo continúen con otros eventos tradicionales como es el de los tres reyes magos y el día de la candelaria entre otras tradiciones Mexicanas. La exhibición de Nacimientos y los diferentes Nacimientos son muy creativos. Específicamente, hay uno que incluye tantas etapas; si no ha visto la exhibición yo y mi familia les decimos que vallan y vean este trabajo tan sorprendente.
Posada en Centro de Herencia Mexicana Thank you to all who made the posada from Saint Mary’s Church to the Mexican Heritage Center. That was a beautiful event that hopefully be followed with other traditional events as the three wise man, day of “La Candelaria” and other traditions of Mexico. The nativity scene exhibit is beautiful and the various sets so creative. Specifically, there is one that includes so many stages; if you have not seen the exhibit me and my family urge you to go and see the amazing work. Celia Paniagua

Count Mephisto Finalmente se Finally an End of Termina una an Unnecessary Guerra Inecesaria War Gracias Presidente Obama por parar una década de masacres sangrientos en Irak; claramente después de 10 años de guerra, no hubo armas de destrucción masiva, no hubo agentes bioquímicos, ni enlaces entre Irak y el terrorismo. ¿Cómo una nación penaliza una administración? Después de que la Administración de Bush le mintió a América desde el momento que de la elección a llevar a América al frente del peligro, es claro que el terrorismo solo fue una escusa para que el expresidente Bush atacara a Irak. Si, yo estoy unido a mis compañeros Americanos ya que el 11 de Septiembre fue uno de los días mas dolorosos para nuestra nación y yo apoyo fuertemente a nuestra tropas ya que ellos mantienen nuestra nación segura. Pero, apoyo aun mas a nuestras tropas diciendo; manténgalas fuera de peligro fuera de una segunda guerra no justificada. Ahora deberíamos de mantener unidad en apoyar paz en el mundo y prevenir que nuestra nación aterroriza a otros. Después de una década de una guerra sangrienta que causo 1000s de muertes en los dos lados. Irak y los EEUU perdieron personas, y espero que generaciones a futuro puedan arreglar el dolor que esta guerra en Irak causo. Espero que América sane sus heridas causadas por el terrorismo, y Irak sane sus heridas causadas por América después de forzarlos a una guerra que no les perteneció. Le pido a Presidente Obama que inicie en el 2012 un nuevo tratado de paz en el mundo como parte de una resolución de América durante el año nuevo.
Thank you President Obama for putting an end to a decade of bloody massacres in Iraq; clearly after 10 years of war, there was no weapons of mass destruction, no bio chemical agents, or any ties between Iraq and terrorism. How does a nation penalize an administration? After the Bush Administration lied to America from the moment of its election to taking American to the front lines of danger, it is clear that terrorism was an excuse for former President Bush to attack Iraq. Yes, I stand in unity with my fellow Americans as September 11th marked one of the most painful days of our nation and I strongly support our troops in keeping our nation safe from terrorism. However, I support our troops even stronger by saying; keep them out of the dangers of an unjustified second war. We should stand in unity to support peace in the world and to prevent our nation from terrorizing other. After a decade of a bloody war which caused 1000s of death on both sides. Both Iraq and US persons died and I hope that future generations are able to amend the pain caused by the war on Iraq. May America heal from the pain of terrorism, and Iraq heals from Americas engaging them in a war that did not belong to them. I urge President Obama to begin 2012 with a new peace treaty in the world as an American New Years Resolution. Pedro Garcia
