Continua de Porada estudiantes, de la preparatoria Lincoln en Stockton— or ga n i z ó u n a p o s ad a el viernes 4 de diciembre, en las instalaciones de la escuela. El evento comenzó con un pueblo pequeño grupo hace unos cuantos años; pero, el evento a atraído la curiosidad de su comunidad local, el año pasado aproximadamente 700 estudiantes y sus familias fueron al evento. L o s nue ve d í a s de la s posad a s repre sent a n u n novenario —nueve días de celebración religiosa basados en los nueve meses que María llevó a Jesús en su seno. “A padres de familia se les ocurrió la idea de tener una Posada en el distrito de Lincoln. Estábamos buscando un evento cultural para la comunidad latina y que los padres puedan sentirse en contacto con el distrito,” dijo el maestro de Anatomía y miembro del LLL Manny Moreno. Las Posadas ofrecen a la comunidad la oportunidad de actuar la historia bíblica de los días cuando Maria y Jose buscaban posada antes de que Jesus naciera. Durante las posadas, personas de la comunidad se colocan dentro y fuera de un local cantando, resando y actuando la historia narrada. Una pereg r inación de la iglesia Santa Maria a el nuevo centro ubicado en el 111 S. Sutter esta organizada para el Sabado 17 de Diciembre. En la Preparatoria Lincoln las posadas son mas que un evento de Navidad, las posadas de Lincoln tambien son u n e vento donde se reconocen con bec as los logros de estudiantes del distrito. “Cada escuela nomina a dos estudiantes y sus familias fueron invitados a celebrar sus logros”, dijo Moreno.

Lincoln Latin Leadership (LLL) —a group for m by pa r ent s, e duc ator s, a nd students, at Lincoln High School in Stockton— organized a posada on Friday, December, 4th at the school grounds. T h e t r a d i t i o n a l e v e nt initiated with a small group of participants just a few years ago; however, the event has been attracting the curiosity of its local community, last year the Lincoln posada drew nearly 700 st udents and families. The nine days of t he Posadas represent a “novenario”— nine days of religious observance based on the nine months that Maria (Virgin Mary) carried Jesus in her womb. “Parents came up with the idea of having a Posada at Lincoln Unified. We were looking for a cultural event for the Latino community and allow parents to feel connect with the district,” explained Anatomy teacher and member of Lincoln Latin Leadership, Manny Moreno. Posadas offer the community an opportunity reenact the bible story that narrates the days when Maria and Joseph searched for shelter right before Jesus was born. During the posadas community members position themselves outside and inside of a location signing, praying and role playing the narrated story. ask ing for shelter, and a secondary group positioned inside reply with other songs. Participants arrange several stops, and ultimately Mary and Joseph arrive to a location were they are welcomed. In the final station, participants share traditional foods while they socialize. In San Joaquin County, many Mexican based communities reenact las p o s a d a s , a t S t o c k t o n’s Downtown area, the Mexican Heritage Center and Gallery is hosting a display of nativity sets by community members, churches, and organizations. A preregrinacion (procession) from St. Mary’s is scheduled leading to the new MHC&G location at 111 S. Sutter Street is scheduled for Saturday December 17th. At Lincoln High at las posadas educators take the opportunity to recognizes t he ach ievement s of t he students in the district with scholarships. “Each school nominated two students and their families were inv ited to celebrate their achievements,” said Moreno. The Lincoln Posada also incorporated other cultural element s such a s Ba l le t f ol k lor i c o, c h a r r o s a nd traditional music by a local Rondallas. The mission of Lincoln L at in L eadership is to produce a contemporar y and progressive leadership system for parents to assist their children in reaching high education says Moreno but it is also important to “keep the rich Latino history and culture in our district.”

Issaid Bulfeda, siempre fue muy curioso desde muy pequeño. “Todo quería saber y todo preguntaba” dice Norma Bulfeda, mama del pequeño de 11 anos Issaid. A la corta edad de un año y medio Issaid logro aprenderse los logotipos y las marcas de los automóviles y se divertía nombrándolas mientras caminaba de la mano de sus padres en los largos estacionamientos de las tiendas “No sabía bien pronunciarlos, solo con la figura, él decía Honda, Toyota, etc.” nos conto se mamá. Fue la buena memoria de Issaid la que la llevo a pensar que su hijo era diferente. Ahora Issaid cursa el sexto grado en la escuela Waterloo en Linden. Atreves de los años ha logrado mantenerse en lo más alto de su clase recibiendo todo tipo de diplomas y reconocimientos año con año sin falta. Issaid no está seguro de lo que quiere ser cuando sea grande, pero últimamente dedica su tiempo a ayudarle a su hermano de 7 años con su tarea, a jugar al hockey en la escuela y a dibujar. “A Mis compañeros le gustan mis dibujos,” dice Issaid. Parte de los logros académicos de Issaid son atribuidos a su mamá. “Desde muy chiquito me pongo a leer con él y trato que lea cosas que le ayuden por ejemplo hay un libro que el favorito de los dos se llama La Culpa es de la Vaca,” Un libro conocido por sus anécdotas con mensajes de respeto y tolerancia Su familia lo describe como un niño humilde y muy sensible.
Issaid Bulfeda was always very curious from an early age. “Wanted to know everything and he asked about everything,” says Norma Bulfeda, mother of the little 11 year old. At the age of one and a half Issaid managed to learn the logos and brands of cars and had fun naming them as he walked hand in hand with his parents in the long parking lots of the stores. “He did not know how to pronounce them, only by looking at the figure, he said Honda, Toyota,” said his mother. It was Issaid`s good memory that made her think that her son was different. Now Issaid is a sixth grader at Waterloo School in Linden. Throughout the years he has managed to stay on top of his class receiving a variety of diplomas and awards year after year without fail. He is not sure what he wants to be when he grows up, but lately he spends his time helping his little seven year old brother with his homework, playing hockey at school and drawing. “My classmates like my drawings,” says Issaid. His academic achievements can also be attributed to his mother. “From a very young age, I read with him I try to have him read things that will help him, for example our favorite book is called “La Culpa es de la Vaca” (Its the cow`s fault),” A book known for his stories with messages of respect and tolerance His family described him as a humble and very sensitive kid.

Escoger el Choosing Árbol de Navidad the Right Correcto Christmas Tree “Real contra artificial” es constantemente un debate aferrado, no importa el tema. El próximo mes, el debate se aplicara a los árboles de navidad. Como persona que le gusta la intemperie con un gran número de plantas, yo prefiero los árboles reales, pero los artificiales tienen su lugar. Otra opción es un árbol de navidad vivo eso quiere decir en una maseta. Todos se ven bonitos y presentables bajo su refugio. Su decisión depende de su preferencia. Árboles artificiales Los fabricantes de árboles artificiales argumentan que sus productos ecológicos puesto que son reusables por décadas. El conservar y reusar materias es definitivamente ecológico. Pero al observarlo más de cerca demuestra una verdad fea. Los árboles artificiales son hechos con petróleo. El proceso de hacer espigas de PVC (cloruro de polivinilo) emite gases volátiles y contaminación. Muchos productos artificiales son fabricados en China y enviados a América, proceso que necesita una gran cantidad inmensa de combustible. Más, como descubrimos con juguetes este año, no todos los productos fabricados en China están a los estándares de control de calidad. Over the next month or so, the debate will be applied to Christmas trees. As an outdoorsman with scores of houseplants, I prefer real trees, but artificial ones have their place. Another option is a living Christmas tree that’s either potted or balled and bur lapped. All of them look beautiful and shelter presents. Your decision depends on your preferences. Artificial Trees — Makers of artificial trees claim their products are green because they are reusable for decades. Conserving and reusing materials is definitely environmentally sound. But a closer look exposes some ugly truths. Artificial plastic trees are made from oil. The process of making the PVC (polyvinyl chloride) needles emits volatile gases and pollutants. Most artificial products are made in China and shipped to America, requiring vast amounts of fuel. Plus, as we found out with toys earlier this year, not all Chinese manufacturers meet our standards for quality control. Lead dust has been found on artificial Christmas trees. If you suspect your tree contains lead, Richard Maas of the University of North Carolina in Asheville, suggests keeping your kids away from the tree. Good luck with that. To find out if your tree has lead, read the label, call the manufacturer, or contact the National Lead Information Center. In defense of artificial products, many of them won’t have toxic chemicals. In addition, for convenience and value, artificial Christmas trees can’t be beat. As a kid, I remember going to the attic (an adventure in itself) el clima es perfecto para plantar arboles. every December and taking out the boxes with the tree and ornaments. My sister and I loved to fit the sturdy branches into the stem. It required no watering, no pruning, no straightening, or any maintenance at all, just loads of decorations and presents. For people with allergies, an artificial tree may be the only option. Apartment and condo dwellers often choose an artificial tree because it is easier and less messy to transport in an elevator or up a stairwell. Parents who want the convenience of an artificial tree might choose aluminum. Although more expensive than a PVC tree, aluminum is less toxic and is 100 percent recyclable. Aluminum trees and many plastic trees come in an array of colors that allow the artsy and eclectic to personalize their Christmas. Real Trees — Christmas tree lots offer many types of trees in many shapes and sizes. Gardeners often choose the greenest options and therefore are drawn towards real trees. But both have some claim to “green,” though neither is totally environmentally friendly. Real trees are obviously alive and typically local. As they grow, they filter water and air, sequester carbon, prevent erosion, and produce oxygen. When the tree is cut for sale, it is immediately replaced with between one and three seedlings, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. This keeps the tree plantation in a constant state of green and growing. However, it is at the expense of native vegetation and biological diversity. Christmas tree plantations are often extensive monocultures that sometimes use pesticides, which can drift or leach into other areas. Personally, I like my Christmas trees to be fresh and green, and here, too,
there are many choices. The chart below lists some of the more common species and their qualities. At the tree lot, make sure the tree is still green and moist. Sniff the needles for fragrance. Run a gloved hand along the branch to see if any needles easily detach. Finally, grab the tree by the trunk, lift it up a bit, and thump it down while holding onto it. If a lot of needles fall off, then the tree is drying out and will drop its needles on your living room floor. If the tree passes the freshness test and the lot manager has not kicked you out, then you have found your Christmas tree. Living Trees — For those with a large landscape, consider buying a living tree and planting it after the holidays. Living trees are the greenest option of all and give you a reason to garden in the winter. This is not a choice for extremely cold climates, but it is perfect for the southeast and West Coast, where December and January are excellent times to plant trees. Almost any evergreen will do; junipers, cypresses, true cedars, pines, spruces, and cryptomeria are common options. Make sure you have enough space for the full-grown tree before buying. Most commercial Christmas trees grow into big specimens. Large conifers need to be planted at least 30 feet from the house. For energy-saving benefits, plant on the north, west, or northwest side to screen against cold winter winds. Consider the weight of the tree before buying. A 5- to 6-foot balled-and-burlapped tree can weigh 200 pounds or more. Container trees are usually lighter. A wheelbarrow, hand truck, dolly, or muscular husband is a must. It can be tricky to use living trees for indoor winter decoration and also keep them alive for planting, but the rewards and memories last a
lifetime. Follow these guidelines for ball-and-burlapped or potted trees: Select a location and dig a hole before the ground freezes. In general, the hole should be about 18 inches deep and 36 inches wide. Heap the soil on a tarp or blanket and cover it. Use this soil to backfill the hole when planting. Buy a healthy looking tree with an intact rootball. Transport the tree carefully and handle the rootball gently. Cover the tree while transporting it to protect against desiccating winds. Once home, spray the needles with an antitranspirant such as Wilt-Pruf or Vapor-guard. Thoroughly soak the rootball and keep it moist. Store your tree in a shady spot outdoors or in an unheated garage. Mulch or cover the rootball with a blanket to prevent it from freezing. Bring the tree into your house close to Christmas and situate it far away from radiators, heat vents, or stoves. For best success, the tree needs to be inside for a minimal amount of time. Most growers recommend only 7 to 10 days. If your home is more than 70 degrees F, reduce the time to 5 days. To fill the void, pre-decorate the Christmas tree area with garlands, bows, lights, and presents. The tree will be the finishing touch. Place it in a large tray, pan, or (for the rustic and woodsy) a wheelbarrow. Decorate the tree. Use cool (LED) lights to avoid damaging the needles. Check the rootball often and keep it moist. Right after Christmas, remove the decorations and take the tree outside. Planting is a family activity. If potted, remove the tree from the pot. Do not plant it too deeply. Aunque se le a aumentado y modificado, la estructura se mantiene intacta. Es una combinación única de tabique, y madera, contiene bases gigantescas de madera roja las cuales sostienen el techo. Somos la Vieja Sta. María Hermanita de la de San Francisco. Pero a causa de un temblor que causo extensa destrucción en 1906, y un gran mejoramiento después del evento de Loma Prieta en 1989, la base de madera se tuvo que remplazar con metal. Pero esto no sucedió con Sta. María de Stockton.

St. Mary’s marks 150 years Saturday December 24 since the original church structure was dedicated on Christmas Eve, 1851. Though it has been enlarged and modified, the structure remains intact. It is a unique combination of brick, mortar, and wood, featuring gigantic redwood beams which still support the roof and suspended ceiling. We are Old St. Mary’s of San Francisco’s little sister. But due to extensive destruction in the 1906 earthquake, and major retrofitting following the 1989 Loma Prieta event, the wooden supports had to be replaced by metal beams. Not so with St. Mary’s of Stockton.

Hola yo e vivido en Stockton CA desde hace tiempo. El departamento de policía es insultante, e intimidante, ellos presumen su poder. Yo fui victima y tuve que esperar un largo tiempo para que llegara la policía llegara cuando yo estuve en peligro en vez llego una persona civil a ayudarme mucho antes de que el departamento de policía llegara. Cuando e hablado con ellos, ellos no escuchan en vez tienen una actitud mientras ellos detienen sus cinturón actuando como guardias en vez de tratar criminales mejor que los que no son, y tratar a las victimas como sospechosos y el sospechoso como victima. No importa lo bueno que somos con los oficiales ellos aún son rudos. La policía te deja colgando a medias y no te contestan sobre los problemas. También la Policía de Stockton no a arrestado a nadie que nos a atacado en vez ellos nos acosan por ejercitar nuestros derecho.

Desde entonces VIH a afectando a niños, mujeres, y hombres de todo tipo de edad, raza y color, entre ellos millones de Latinos. La epidemia HIV/AIDS es una situación seria a la salud publica en la comunidad latina. Deacuerdo a la Fundacion Kaiser Familia hay aproximadamente 1.1 millones de personas que viven con HIV/ AIDS en los EEUU, incluso mas de 205,000 Latinoamericanos. En el Reporte el Estado de Salud del Condado de San Joaquin dice que en el 2009 Latinos forman el 23% de casos de SIDA y 29% de casos de VIH en el Condado. “en los últimos cinco años hemos visto un aumento,” dijo Robert Lampkins Presidente de la Fundación SJC SIDA ubicado Stockton. De acuerdo a los servicios de Salud Publica del Condado de San Joaquin se ha registrado 1,423 casos de SIDA desde 1983 a el 2010 en el condado. “se estima que por cada 1 caso que sabemos hay 5 que no sabemos, asi que si figuramos 1,500 casa hay 7,500 casos que no sabemos,” explico Lampkins agregando, “en el condado, probablemente menos de 10% de las personas saben su status.” De acuerdo a un estudio de VIH en el 2011 reproducido por el Consejo Nacional de La Raza (NCLR) el entender la cultura Latina es esecencial para figurar estrategias efectivas para reducir el regar VIH. Factores socio económicos como pobreza, patrones de inmigración, poca educación, seguro medico inadecuado, barreras en el idioma son factores que limitan a los Latino dice el Reporte del Centro del Centro de Enfermedades y Prevención (CDC). Since then HIV has affected children, women, and men from every age, race and color; among them millions of Latinos. The HIV/AIDS epidemic is a serious public health issue in the Latino community. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation presently there are about 1.1 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S, including more than 205,000 Latinos. The San Joaquin County Community Health Status Report states that in 2009 Latinos made up 23% of AIDS cases and 29% of HIV of the cases in the county. “In the last five years we seen the numbers increase,” says Robert Lampkins President of the SJC AIDS Foundation located in Stockton. When relationships are strongly defined by gender roles it leads to expectations for appropriate male and female sexual behavior, often resulting in male promiscuity and female tolerance of such. According to the NCRL strong associations exist between HIV infection and poverty. The poor frequently have low levels of education and decreasing access to risk reduction information says the NCRL, which is particularly higher among monolingual Spanish or native Latin American language speakers. “Most of the people infected are not in the upper ends of the social economic ladder, most of them are in the lower ends,” says Lampkins. “The majority of the adults infected are in the $30,000 a year income level.” The goal for Lampkins, who has been with the foundation for over eleven years, and his team is to cut down transmission from one person to the next, “but we have to find the cases first in order to get there.” Although society has come a long way in dealing with this disease the negative connotation still prevails. “One of the biggest challenges is people getting over the idea of HIV meaning that you did something wrong, getting them to understand that this is a disease; younger kids have no problem talking about HIV, it is the adults that don’t want to hear it.” says Lampkins “A lot of people do not have any idea of what is happening in the community, they don’t realize we have a big issue here.” nuestra meta.” Ahunque la sociedad a logrardo atravesar una larga trayectoria tratando esta enfermedad la conotacion negativa aun existe. “Uno de los desafíos mas grandes es que las personas sobre pasen la idea de que HIV quiere decir que hicieron algo malo, hacerlos que entender que esto es una enfermedad; personas jovenes no tienen problema hablar de VIH, son los adultos que no quieren escucharlo,” dijo Lampkins. “Muchos no tienen ni idea de lo que pasa en la comunidad, ellos no se dan cuenta de la magnitud de este grande problema.”
