Recent Pacific Grad victim of the Colorado theater shooting STOCKTON, CA- Petra Anderson ’12, who graduated in May as a composition major in the Conservatory of Music from the University of the Pacific, was caught in the shooting at a Colorado movie theater last week. The latest information provided is that Petra is undergoing surgery in an Aurora hospital. Elizabeth Griego, Vice President for Student Life, spoke with Petra’s family and her mother told her that doctors are hopeful that she will recover from her injuries. The family is feeling well, supported by friends, family, and the University community. They ask for the community to continue prayers for Petra. STOCKTON, CA (July 20, 2012) — San Joaquin County Health Officer, Dr. Karen Furst, confirmed that a 48-year old male living in Stockton is the first human with West Nile Virus (WNV) infection in San Joaquin County this year. The man reported having no symptoms, but tested positive for the virus when donating blood. For reporting purposes this does not meet the case definition for the California Department of Public Health to count as a case, but it does indicate that there is currently active transmission of WNV to people in San Joaquin County. Launched in 2001 through a pa r t ner sh ip of K a i ser Permanente and the San Joaquin Medical Societ y, “Decision Medicine” is a twoweek program designed to introduce students to the field of medicine through personal mentoring and visits to regional hospitals. The goal is to motivate young students to become physicians with the hope that they return to San Joaquin County or Stanislaus County and establish their practices. “ It l e t s t h e m (t h e students) realize they could be a physician after hearing people talk and share their experiences,” said Nikki West, Deputy Director of the San
Joaquin Medical Society. “We strive very hard through the application process to have a diverse representation of the Central Valley.” But cur rent physician workforce is a far way from reflecting the diversity of the general population. As more patients from underser ved populations start to enter the healthcare system through healthcare refor m, there w ill be an increasing need to have more African-American and Latino physicians to help provide quality health care. “K a iser Per ma nente understands the importance of hav ing a hea lt hcare workforce that will ref lect the diversity of our everevolving population,” said Yvette Radford, w ith the Community Affairs division at Kaiser. “We recognize that there are insufficient numbers of A frican-A merican and Latino medical students, and our support for National Medical Fellowships is one
way to help address this important issue.” And the trend is slowly changing thanks to local programs and people like Va ne s s a A r me nd a r i z , a “Decision Medicine” alumnus from 2005. “I saw physicians who were like me. They were a woman or Hispanic. I went through the program, was motivated. I graduated valedictorian and got a full ride scholarship

Stories and people like Armendariz inspiring young students like Vanessa Briseno, a 17 year old from Tracy High School. “I have seen what it’s really like in a hospital, how doctors go about their day. City Of Stockton Ab506 Restructuring Proposal Released STOCKTON, CA - The Cit y of Stock ton f iled evidence with the United States Bankruptcy Court on Friday, July 20 related to the State-mandated A B 506 conf idential mediation process. The evidence includes a 790-page restructuring proposal, referred to as the “ASK.” Included in this lengthy document was the data that demonstrates the City is insolvent and requires modifications to obligations, i nclud i ng t he C it y-pa id retiree and retiree-dependent medical premiums, as well as long-term debt, such as bonds backed by the City’s General Fund. The City and its largest creditors concluded 90 days of confidential mediation on June 25. The mediation resulted in the tentative agreements with the majority of the City’s labor unions that will be presented to the City
Council for approval on July 24, 2012. No agreements were reached with the City’s largest creditors, forcing the City to file for bankruptcy on June 28, 2012. In an emergency motion that was heard on July 6, 2012, the City had requested that virtually all information r el at i ng to t he A B 50 6 process be disclosed to the public. Chief Bankruptcy Judge Christopher M. Klein, who is overseeing the City’s bankruptcy case, granted permission for only limited disclosure. In addition to the restructuring proposal, which was the key document in the mediation, a list of mediation sessions and other relevant information such as who participated, the issues discussed, the duration of the meetings, and the results of the mediation was filed with the Court on Friday, June 20th.

Desde una edad joven, el tenia inquietud por la música, y a principios de los 70’s el emprendió su carrera como músico. En aquel entonces el tenia el sueño de tocar en los grandes escenarios; meta que se convirtió en realidad cuando el formo parte del grupo Los Diablos. Daniel Esparza nació en Ciudad Juarez, durante su juventud el creció escuchando música rock como fue Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Gra nd F un k , Ur ia h Het y, “Claro que también me encantaban los grandes de la música en español como f ue C a m i lo Sex to, Jua n Gabriel, A manda Miguel y otros,” explico Esparza sus influencias en la música regional Mexicana. Mas de treinta años después Esparza es conocido por su colaboración como baterista de Los Diablos, pero su trayectoria musical fue estrecha antes de llegar a ser profesional. “Trabaje con varios grupos asta los 80’s,” Esparza comento sobre su colaboración con los grupos Mister io, Jud a s, Jua re s 74 , Mar icela y el Gr upo Diamante, Revelación 2000 y otros. From musician to producer, Daniel Esparza’s Interview During his youth Daniel Esparza had a dream — to become a professional musician. Starting at his youth, he had an interest for
mucic, and at the beginning of the 70’s he started his musician career. It was then that he had the dream of performing in large arenas; a goal he reached when he joined the Mexican group “Los Diablos.” Daniel Esparza was born in Ciudad Juarez Mexico, as a child he grew up listening to rock music as he enjoyed Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Grand Funk, Uriah Het and, “ofcourse I also enjoyed some of the great musicians of Spanish music as they were Camilo Sexto, Juan Gabriel, Amanda Miguel y otros,” Esparza explained how the reg iona l Mex ic an music influenced him.
More than 30 years later, Esparaza is known for his collaboration as drummer with Los Diablos; however, his music trayectory was long before he made it to being a professional. “I worked with many groups up to the 80’s,” Esparza shared how he collaborated with bands like Misterio, Judas, Juares 74 , Mar icela y el Gr upo Diamante, Revelación 2000 and others. Esparza made it to the large stages as he performed at the Astro Dome of Huston Texas, Atlapan in Panama and other famous spots in Colombia and Mexico. He noted that, “when I joined the band Juares 74 we toured with
Juan Gabriel in the U.S.” As a professional he performed in Latinamerica, the U.S. and some spots in Europe. Today, Esparaza dedicates his time to producing new musical talents at his studio, and his Profama Music label, located in Stockton. “Upon end i ng my profe s siona l career as a musician I opted to de d ic ate my t i me to producing other talents,” in addition to his Profama Music label, Daniel started a project titled “Proyecto Super Estrella”(Superstar Project) The Superstar Project is a collaboration of Empresas Unidas,(United Enterprizes) “were local participants who like music can demonstrate
their talent. “This project st a r ted i n L os A ngele s, however we are now promoting it in the norther central valley region were more than 70 participants are making it a reality.” Esparza recommends anyone who would like to perform music, “if this is your passion study hard and practice a lot,” he explained that music is really complex, “music is not as simple as saying I graduated and that’s it; here you have to have the heart, the passion, and dedication to your instrument.” The Super Start Project its taking place at the Paladium Club in Modesto every Sunday starting at 4:30 p.m.

Ingredients:
Ingredientes: • 1 taza (dos barras) de mantequilla sin sal, suave • ½ taza de azúcar granulada • 2 yemas de huevo grande (guarde la clara) • 1 cuchara de te de extracto de vainilla • 2 cucharas grandes de flor de lavanda (busque flor seca de Lavanda en la sección de especies. • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 2 large egg yolks (reserve egg whites) • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2 tablespoon(s) dried lavender flowers (Look for dried lavender flowers in spice shops. If using lavender from the garden, make sure it hasn’t been treated with chemicals). • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 2 1/2 cup(s) all-purpose flour • 1 cup(s) Lemon Curd, or store-bought • 1 egg white • ¾ cup chopped pecans

Coloque en la charola con 2 pulgadas de separadas. Con su pulgar haga una charolita en el centro de cada bola. Cocine asta que queden firmes y doradas en la parte de abajo, aproximadamente 19 a 20 minutos. 4 . — Remueva las ga lletas del hor no inmediatamente. Llene el hueco con la crema de limón. Coloque en el horno nuevamente para que se cocine la crema.
Crema de limón Ingredientes • 3 huevos • 1 tasa de azúcar • ¼ taza de mantequilla derretida • 1 cuchara grande de cascara de limón rayado • ½ taza de jugo de limón fresco Direcciones En la parte de arriba de una caldera doble, mescle los huevos y la azúcar. Mezcle el jugo de limón, la mantequilla y las cascara de limón. Cocine sobre agua hirviendo por 15 minutos o asta que se agá densa.

Line 2 baking sheets with parchment or nonstick liners. 3— Shape scant tablespoons of dough into 1-inch balls. Roll in egg white, then nuts. Place on cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. With your thumb make a deep indentation in the center of each ball. Bake cookies until firm and lightly golden on bottom, about 19 to 20 minutes. 4— Remove cookies from oven and immediately fill indentations with curd. Return to oven and bake 2 minutes longer to set curd.
Lemon Curd: • 3 eggs • 1 cup sugar • ¼ cup melted butter • 1 tablespoon grated lemon peel • ½ cup fresh lemon juice In the top of a double boiler, beat eggs and sugar. Stir in lemon juice, butter and lemon peel. Cook over simmering water for 15 minutes or until thickened.

Las Cámaras fácilmente pueden demostrar su agradecimiento dándoles pequeños descuentos a aquellos afiliados que van a sus eventos, tarjetas de agradecimiento después de visitar a un almuerzo, o anunciar los logros de sus empresas en sus comunicados postales y envíos de correo electrónico y comunicar sobre las cosas aquellos hacen como iniciativas de promoción empresarial. These souper business chambers offer spectacular opportunities for business growth but, there may be room for some additional spices in the soup bullion – the very base of any soup- or in this case, the basics of a business chamber. When spices get old, you have to either buy new or increase the amount used. It could be time for local chambers to consider doing the same with their ‘membership appreciation’ spice. Chambers could easily show appreciation by g iv ing sma l l membership - on ly discounts to their events, thank you cards after the attendance of luncheons, or announcing business milestones in their mailers and email blasts and communicate about all the things they are doing to promote business initiatives. However, the soup is a relationship that is held together by many ingredients and to really get the full flavor it has to be eaten at the right temperature, stirred and served in an appropriate bowl. This is the responsibility of the business to make sure they utilize every possible opportunity in the organization, to attend as many events as possible and participate in every way they can – otherwise this exciting soup could become bland, cold, or unfulfilling. Votantes a Considerar nuevo Termino para el Condado (bw) CONDADO DE SA N JOAQUIN, CA — el 17 de Julio, 2012 la Mesa de Supervisores del Condado de San Joaquín decidió con 4 a 1 voto el poner una medida en la boleta de votantes de Noviembre para aumentar los limites que un Supervisor puede servir a tres términos en su vida. Actualmente, después de que los votantes aprobaran la Medida “A” en 1998 el limite de los Supervisores del Condado de San Joaquín es el servir durante dos términos en cuatro años. No es claro si los límites son por vida o solo para años consecutivos y la medida del 1998 necesitaría un análisis legal para probar los dos lados. La iniciativita propuesta, al ser aprobada, agregaría un termino de cuatro años —lo cual le daría la oportunidad a los representantes de la mesa el servir un total de 1 2 a ño s — y c l a r a mente definiría los términos por vida. Adicionalmente, la medida se extiende a incluir el Directorio de Educación del Condado de San Joaquín al igual que la Medida “A” lo hace. Para que esto pase, la Mesa de Supervisores tiene que crear una Resolución con la ordenanza adjunta que le permitiría a los residentes votar en ella y adoptarla. Si los votantes aprueban la ex tensión, la med id a ag rega r ía el tér mino de cuatro años. Voters to Consider New Term for County ( b w) S A N J O A Q U I N COU N T Y, CA – On July 17, 2012 the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors decided in a 4-1 vote to place a measure on November’s ballot to increase Board of Supervisors term limits to three terms in a lifetime. Currently, following the 1998 Measure A initiative approved by voters limits San Joaquin County Supervisors to ser v ing two four-year terms. The board is uncertain if the limits are lifetime or consecutive and the 1998 measure would need legal analysis to prove one way or another. The proposed initiative, if passed, will add additional term of 4 years —granting an oppor tunit y to board members to serve a total of 12 years —and it would clearly define the terms to lifetime limits. Additionally, the measure extends to include the San Joaquin Count y B o a r d of E duc at ion a s Measure A currently does. In order for this to happen, the Board of Supervisors will have to create a Resolution with the ordinance attached that would allow the people to vote on it and adopt it.
