2a Generación de Graduados de la Academia Alcanzar las Estrellas Stockton, CA- La Academia Alcanzar la Estrellas celebró su segunda graduación el jueves 12 de julio, en la Universidad del Pacífico. El programa de cinco semanas, prepara a los estudiantes prometedores para las carreras en ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas (STEM). “El año pasado comenzamos nuestra primera clase con un mínimo de 30 estudiantes, este año gracias a donantes como SUSD (El Distrito Escolar Unificado de Stockton) y otros, que nos permitió iniciar dos nuevas clases,” dijo Nancy Shaw, Administradora del Proyecto Más allá de Nuestras Puertas de la Universidad del Pacífico. 2nd Generation of Reach for the Stars Academy Graduates STOCKTON, CA- Reaching for the Stars Academy celebrated its second graduation on Thursday, July 12 at the University of the Pacific. The five week program, prepares promising students for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). “Last year we started our first class with a minimum of 30 students, this year thanks to funding from SUSD and other donors, it allowed us to start two new classes,” said Nancy Shaw, Administrator of the Beyond Our Gates Tomorrow Project of the University of the Pacific. The Reach for the Stars Academy launched in summer of 2011 with proximately 30 students, has now expanded to a total of 84 students- 32 returning students and 52 new students. Graduated Pg. 6

LAS VEGAS—El 10 de julio del 2012, el NCLR (Consejo Nacional de La Raza) presentó seis premios honrando a personas y organizaciones que han demostrado logros ejemplares, tanto en su campo como en el servicio a la comunidad hispana de los Estados Unidos. Janet Murguía, presidenta y directora general del NCLR, felicitó a los ganadores en la gala anual de premios de la organización, que es el acto de clausura de la Conferencia Anual 2012 del NCLR que se llevó a cabo del 7 al 10 julio en Las Vegas, Nevada. Los ganadores de este año incluyeron al afiliado del NCLR Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans (AAMA por sus siglas en inglés), una organización no lucrativa con sede en Texas; los reverendos James Manship y Ángel FernándezChavero de la iglesia católica St. Rose of Lima de New Haven, Connecticut; el honorable Reynaldo L. Martínez, ex jefe de personal del senador Harry Reid de Nevada; Rossana Rosado, editora y directora general del periódico El Diario-La Prensa; Jesse James Leija, ex campeón mundial de boxeo y partidario de la Miracle League de San Antonio; y Christine M. Owens, vicepresidenta de comunicaciones y manejo de marca de UPS. “Es un placer para el NCLR dar un reconocimiento a las personas que han hecho tan excelentes contribuciones a la comunidad hispana y a nuestro gran país. Medina sale de su casa en Stockton a las cuatro de la mañana y se dirige a Oakland, California, ¿La razón por viajar rutinariamente? Para comenzar un nuevo día de trabajo en una obra de construcción —uno de los puentes más grandes del país — el Puente de la Bahía de San Francisco. Ramón Medina se estableció en el Valle Central a la edad de 15 años, poco después comenzó a trabajar en los campos, piscando jitomates y otros cultivos de la temporada. “Siempre y cuando tengas dos pies, dos manos y un corazón fuerte... hay que seguir trabajando,” lo que Medina describe como su lema a seguir. Medina leaves his Stockton home at four in the morning and heads to Oa k land, California; the reason of his routine travel? To start a new day of work at a construction site —of one of the busiest bridges in the country— the new San Francisco’s Bay Bridge. Ramon Medina settled in the Central Valley at the age of 15, soon after he began working in the fields, picking tomatoes and other seasonal crops. “As long as you have two feet, two hands and a strong heart... you must continue working,” is what Medina describes as his motto in life. He wa nted a bet ter opp or t u n it y for h i m sel f and his family, and so with little or no experience he began work ing for MCM Construction Company in 1992 —one of the largest construction companies in California. “The reason I went was because in the fields you do not make much and I wanted a steady job.” Medina noted that, “I told my boss at the time, I want to get into construction and he said to me, ‘you’ll never get there because to begin with you do not speak English,’ I said English?! Language is not what does the job, it is you [the person].” As part of MCM Medina has worked in several main
projects one of them, the California Highway 4, the Ort Loftus Freeway known as Stockton’s Crosstown Freeway which was built in the early 1990s. Building bridges, freeways, fixing roads and driving large and heavy equipment soon turn into Medina`s passion. Medina has spent the last 10 months in Oakland and San Francisco as a traffic controller at the Bay Bridge With approximately 280,000 vehicles traveling acro s s t he br id ge d a i ly, working alongside cars on busy roads makes our jobs very dangerous, said Medina as he recognized the risks of his job. “It is scary but you get used to it, you just need to be careful and always be looking around you, but I miss being up on the bridges with the other workers.” The Bay Bridge became a focal point following the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, which damaged a section of t he E a st Spa n of t he bridge, five years ago it was determined that the entire bridge required seismic safety improvements: an estimated $6 billion dollar tab for the State of California—this might be one the most expensive br id ge s i n mo der n U. S. history. “I feel very happy with my job.”

El Puente de la Bahía se convirtió en lugar clave tras el terremoto de Loma Prieta en 1989, cual dañó una sección del puente, en aquel entonces se determinó que todo el puente requería mejoras de seguridad sísmica; estimadas en un total de más de $ 6 mil millones, este será tal vez uno los puentes más caros de la historia actual de los Estados Unidos. “Me siento muy feliz con mi trabajo,” dice Medina.

La organización AAMA, receptora del premio Afiliado del Año del NCLR, es una de las organizaciones no lucrativas más influyente en Texas. With a particular focus on education and youth, AAMA has a stellar track record of outreach to the Latino community through programs such as the George I. Sanchez Charter High School, which helps address Latino dropout rates in Houston; the Adelante program, which provides adults with the skills and education necessary to enter and advance in the workplace; and a number of intervention services, such as Barrios Unidos, offered to Latino youth at risk for gang involvement, drug use, family difficulties, and dropping out of school. The Affiliate of the Year Award is the highest honor bestowed upon an Affiliate for exemplary nonprofit management, service to its community, and active engagement in and promotion of NCLR’s programmatic and advocacy initiatives. Reverend James Manship and Angel Fernandez-Chavero of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in New Haven, Conn. were honored with the Graciela Olivarez La Raza Award. Rev. Manship and Fernandez-Chavero, a leader on the church’s pastoral council, were instrumental in bringing to light the abuses that members of the community received from police in the neighboring town of East Haven—arbitrary police stops, beatings, stun-gun shots, racial slurs, and illegal searches—which ultimately led to the arrest of four East Haven police officers. They also founded the St. Rose of Lima Education Task Force, which provides crucial support for DREAMers on the journey to college, and were heavily involved in the passage of the Connecticut “DREAM Act.” NCLR presents the Graciela Olivarez La Raza Award annually to an individual or organization that has made significant contributions to promoting the interests of Hispanic Americans. The Honorable Reynaldo L. Martinez, former Chief of Staff to Senator Harry Reid, received the Maclovio Barraza Award for Leadership. Throughout his career, Martinez has ensured that Latinos were fairly considered for key positions on the senator’s staff and that Latino students were represented during each internship session. He helped establish the Latino Youth Leadership Conference in 1993, which aims to increase the number of Hispanic students attending college and build their leadership skills, as well as the Hispanic Political Academy, which gives Latino community leaders the skills they need to work on campaigns and run for office. He also implemented a plan to hold several statewide Hispanic Leadership Summits—the largest gatherings of Latino Leaders from across Nevada to discuss vital issues impacting Latinos in the state. The Maclovio Barraza Award for Leadership recognizes those who have worked for the
betterment of the Hispanic community at the grassroots level and whose leadership has served as a source of strength and support to the Hispanic community. Rossana Rosado was presented with the Ruben Salazar Award for Communications. As the Publisher and CEO of El Diario-La Prensa, the largest Spanish-language newspaper in New York and the oldest Spanish-language newspaper in the country, she is truly a leader in the largest media market in the country and has used that visibility to bring to light issues that affect her readers and all of New York. In 1995, she was the first woman to hold the position of editor in chief since La Prensa’s founding in 1913. Only a few years later she was named publisher, and now oversees day-to-day operations and is responsible for more than $22 million in annual revenue. The Ruben Salazar Award for Communications is given to an individual who has dedicated his or her professional life to portraying issues, concerns, and/or news relevant to contemporary Hispanic America and promoting the positive contributions that Latinos have made to U.S. society. The Roberto Clemente Award for Sports Excellence went to Jesse James Leija, a world-class boxer with two world titles for WBC super featherweight along with nine world title fights and wins against 15 world contenders and three Olympians. Since retiring, Leija has been an important supporter of the Miracle League of San Antonio—a charitable organization in his hometown that provides children with mental and/or physical challenges the opportunity to play baseball as a team member in an organized league. He helped raise money for a fully-lit four-acre complex that offers fields and courts with special surfaces to accomodate players of all needs, including wounded veterans in treatment at local military medical facilities. The Roberto Clemente Award for Sports Excellence is presented to an individual renowned in the world of sports and committed to the advancement of Hispanic Americans. The Raul Yzaguirre President’s Award was given to Christine M. Owens, Senior Vice President of Communications and Brand Management at UPS. Although her purview at UPS extends to 214 countries and more than 400,000 employees worldwide, Owens has dedicated considerable time to strengthening NCLR’s brand—the image that influences external perceptions of the organization. Her guidance has been instrumental in shaping how NCLR tells its story and in improving the way it communicates issues to others who are not familiar with the Latino community. The Raul Yzaguirre President’s Award is presented each year to an individual or organization that has shown outstanding support for NCLR’s mission, goals, and philosophy.

Legislators Request Delay in Finalizing BDCP Water Conveyance Plan SACR AMENTO—Northern California legislators pushed for a delay in the $23 billion water conveyance project through the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta until more details are available on the state’s rev ised Bay Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP). “The state should not make premature commitments to a large-scale water export project before the project has been vetted and details of the BDCP are available for public review,” said State Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis), a longtime advocate for the Delta and opponent of plans to build a peripheral canal. Wolk is the lead author of the request letter addressed to Natural Resources Secretary John Laird. It was signed by 15 state legislators including Senator Mark DeSaulnier and Assembly Members Jared Huf f man, A lyson Huber, Joan Buchanan, and Wesley Chesbro. “California and the Federal G over nment have a long history of missteps in the Delta,” it states. “We urge you to put aside proposals that advance plumbing before policy and refocus the BDCP on the many sustainable
solutions that can be supported by sound science and realistic financing. As our congressional colleagues have pointed out, the most recent BDCP framework raises more questions than it answers, and puts at significant risk the ecosystem and communities of Northern California, and the ratepayers of Southern California.” The leg islators’ message mirrored that expressed in a letter from 12 members of Congress to Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior Ken Salazar and Acting Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce Rebecca Blank. The estimated cost of the BDCP tunnel conveyance system is now $23 billion, not including debt servicing, which equals $1.1 billion a year for 35 years. The plan would increase exports to south of Delta contractors including the Metropolitan Water District. The sheer size of the project and surface f low requirements for the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers and endangered Delta fish species may render the project environmentally and economically unfeasible.

Un ángel apareció y le dijo: ¿“porque le dedicas tanto tiempo a la creación de esta criatura? Y el Señor contesto: ¿has leído mi proyecto de lo que quiero conseguir con esta obra? Debe ser completamente lavable, pero no ser de plástico, tener mas de 200 piezas móviles, todas cambiables y ser capaz de funcionar con una dieta de sobras o de cualquier cosa, tener un regazo que pueda acomodar cuatro niños al mismo tiempo, tener un beso que pueda curar desde una rodilla raspada hasta un corazón roto y lo hará todo solamente con dos manos y un solo corazón.” El ángel se maravillo de aquel proyecto… “solamente dos manos… ¡Imposible!” ¡y este es solamente el modelo estándar…! “Es demasiado trabajo para un día. Señor.” Mejor espera hasta mañana para terminarla.” No, no esperare, protesto el Señor. Estoy ya muy cerca de termina esta obra que es la creación favorita de mi corazón. Ella se cura sola cuando esta enferma y puede trabajar 18 horas al día. El ángel se acercó más y toco a la mujer. ¡Pero la has hecho tan suave, Señor…! Es suave, dijo Dios, pero la he hecho también fuerte. No tienes idea de lo que puede aguantar ni de lo que es capaz de lograr”. “Sera Capaz de pensar?” pregunto el ángel. Dios contesto: “no solamente será capaz de pensar sino también de razonar, de entender y de perdonar.” El ángel entonces noto algo y alargando la mano toco la mejilla de la mujer… “parece ser que este modelo tiene una fuga… Te dije que estabas tratando de poner demasiadas cosas en ella.” “Eso no es ninguna fuga… es una lagrima” lo corrió el Señor. ¿para que es la lagrima? Pregunto el ángel y dios dijo: “las lagrimas en su manera de expresar su dicha, su pena, su desengaño, su amor, su soledad, su sufrimiento, y su orgullo.” Esto impresiono mucho al ángel “Eres un genio, Señor, pensaste en todo. La mujer es realmente maravillosa.” ¡Lo es! La mujer tiene fuerzas que maravillan a los hombres. Aguantan dificultades, llevan grandes cargas pero tienen felicidad, amor y dicha. Sonríe cuando quieren gritar. Cantan cuando quieren llorar. Lloran cuando están felices y ríen cuando están nerviosas. Luchan por lo que creen. Se enfrentan a la injusticia. No aceptan “no” por respuesta cuando ellas creen que hay una solución mejor. Se privan para que su familia pueda tener. Aman incondicionalmente. Lloran cuando sus hijos triunfan y se alegran cuando sus amistades consiguen premios. Son felices cuando escuchan sobe un nacimiento o una boda. Su corazón se rompe cuando muere una amiga. Sufren con la perdida de un ser querido, sin embargo son fuertes cuando piensan que ya no hay mas fuerza. Saben que un beso y un abrazo pueden ayudar a curar un corazón roto. Sin embargo, hay un defecto en la mujer… ¡Que se le olvida lo muchísimo que vale!
