(bw) STOCKTON, CA “Una ciudad sin poesía es una ciudad que no existe,” dijo el profesor de Español Martin Camps, mientras impartía un taller a un grupo de personas en el Museo Haggin como parte de la celebración del Mes Nacional de la Poesía, el sábado 7 de Abril. Camps es un respetado poeta y con libros publicados en México actualmente enseña en la Universidad del Pacífico. “La expresión personal, el capturar momentos, capturar imágenes en palabras, captar las emociones, eso es lo que es la esencia de la poesía es para mí”, dijo una de las asistentes. “Si pones a un momento en las palabras, sólo si lo escribes existirá”, dice Camps. Para Camps la maravilla de la poesía en que no es fácil, requiere una exploración del lenguaje y metáforas que sean exactas, sin acudir a la frases hechas.

(bw) STOCKTON, CA - “A city without poetry is a city that does not exist,” said Spanish Literature Professor Martin Camps, while teaching a workshop to a group of people at the Haggin Museum. The workshop is part of the National Poetry Month Celebration held on Saturday April, 7th. Camps is a respected and published poet in Mexico and currently teaches at the University of the Pacific. “Self-expression, capturing moments, capture pictures in words, capture emotions: that is what the essence of poetry is for me,” said one of
the attendees. “Only if you capture a moment in words it exists,” said Camps. The wonder of poetry is that is not easy, says Camps, it requires an exploration of the language along with accurate metaphors, while staying away from the typical clichés. During the 45 minute workshop Camps shared writing tips and well-known poems by Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet Pablo Neruda and Mexican historical figure and poet Sor Juana Inez de La Cruz. Among Camps` favorite
poems is “Muerte sin fin” (Endless Death) by the Mexican poet José Gorostiza, which is “a major poem in the Spanish language.” Participant in the four hour workshop, Betty Sanches, traveled from Yuba City to take part in the event, stating: “I write because I have had many experiences and I have much to say, and often I use it as therapy.” “In a community where there are so many Spanish speakers, it is important to have events like this one in Spanish,” said Camps. (bw) SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CA- Michael Kelly, padre de la Iglesia Católica de San Joaquín en Lockeford, fue declarado culpable por un jurado civil de asalto sexual de un monaguillo en la década de 1980, el viernes, 6 de abril. “A luz de este veredicto, he tomado la decisión de retirar el Padre. Kelly de su ministerio, con efecto inmediato “, dijo el Obispo Stephen Blaire en un comunicado después de la decisión del jurado. El demandante, un hombre de 37 años de edad, alega que el sacerdote abusó sexualmente de él en 1980 cuando era monaguillo en la Catedral de la Anunciación, ubicada en Stockton. El periódico, Lodi News Sentinel reporto el 7 de abril del 2012, que más de un centenar de feligreses se reunieron en la Iglesia Católica de Lockeford después del veredicto y Kelly dijo a la congregación que no culparan al obispo Stephen Blaire por su expulsión debido a que el líder de la iglesia no tenía ninguna otra opción. Aprobada en 2003, la Carta de la Iglesia para la Protección de Niños y Jóvenes, requiere que los líderes de la iglesia retiren inmediatamente a un sacerdote condenado por delitos sexuales contra un menor de edad. Civil Jury —Guilty of Sexual Assault:
Father Micahael Kelly Removed from ministry (bw) SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CA — Father Michael Kelly, pastor of Saint Joachim’s Catholic Church in Lockeford, was found guilty of sexual assault on Friday, April 6th, by a civil jury following the charges of an altar boy in the 1980s. “In light of this verdict, I have made the decision to remove Fr. Kelly from ministry, effective immediately,” said Dioceses of Stockton’s Bishop, Stephen Blaire, in a press release following the jury`s decision. The plaintiff, a 37-year-old man, alleges that the priest sexually abused him back in the 80s when he was an altar boy at Cathedral of the Annunciation located in northern downtown Stockton. In a call for solidarity towards their faith, “Kelly told the congregation not to blame Bishop Stephen Blaire for his removal because the church leader had no other choice.” The Lodi News Sentinel reported on Saturday, April 7th, that more than a hundred parishioners gathered at the Lockeford’s Catholic Church after the verdict. Following the conclusion of the eight-week trial, Kelly continues to deny the allegations. “Nevertheless, it is my belief that the jury verdict must be respected,” said Blaire. “The Diocese of Stockton takes all accusations of sexual abuse with great seriousness. We have in place policies and procedures to help us get to an understanding of the truth, and we remain committed to creating and maintaining a safe environment for all our children and young adults.” As of 2003, the Church’s Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People mandates that church leaders immediately remove a priest convicted of sexual crimes against minors. La propuesta se encuentra actualmente en una sesión comentarios públicos de 60 días, grupos de defensa de inmigrantes, así como abogados de inmigración están pidiendo al público apoyar la medida que beneficiará a un sinnúmero de familias latinas. “Es importante aclarar al público que esto no es una ley todavía”, dice el abogado de Stockton Sr. Héctor A. Cavazos quien se especializa en casos de inmigración. Cavazos explica la situación enfrentan miles de personas que regresan a sus países de origen en la búsqueda de un camino a la legalización. New Immigration Proposal under public Commentary (bw) SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CA - In January of 2012 the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) proposed a change to the process by which undocumented persons who are immediate relatives of U.S. citizens may apply for legal residency. The proposal is currently under a 60-day public commentary session; immigrant advocacy groups as well as immigration lawyers are asking the public to support the measure that will benefit a countless number of Latino Families. “It is important to clarify to public that this is not a law yet,” says Stockton attorney Hector A. Sr. Cavazos, who deals with immigration cases. Cavazos explained the situation faced by thousands of individuals as they return to their native countries in search of a path to legalization. “Under current mandates, if an undocumented man is married to a U.S citizen and they have kids together and if he does not have a criminal record —since he entered the country illegally— he cannot apply for his green card in the U.S.,” says Cavazos. In this example, Cavazos explained that the husband would have to go to the U.S. consulate in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and wait for indefinite amount of time for his application to be process. “The current process can subject U.S. citizens to months of separation from family mem-
bers who are waiting for their cases to be processed overseas. The proposed change will have tremendous impact on families by significantly reducing the time of separation,” said USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas. According to USCIS these individuals can receive a waiver to allow them to return to their families by showing that their U.S. citizen family member would face extreme hardship as a result of the separation. Many experts describe this path to legalization as a catch22 situation because the applicants may be eligible for a green card because of the marriage, without the waivers, they can be barred from reentering the U.S. for up to 10-years. The proposed change would allow the relatives to apply for the waiver while still in the United States, but it would not make these waivers any easier to attain. “Among some of this regulation’s goals is protecting American Citizens and their families from extreme hardship,” said Javier Guerrero, immigration law student at Golden Gate University School of Law. Although there are several economic or emotional factors that help determine “extreme hardship,” there is no set criteria said Guerreo. Cavasos anticipates that the amendment will become a law this year as a way to seek the Latino vote by the Obama administration.

The youngest of five children, Alfaro was born and raised in Stockton and attended Stagg High School. It was during his high school years that he was first introduced to Fathers and Families of San Joaquin. “I got involved through a program called ‘El Joven Noble’ [Noble Youth Program] at Stagg High School and they wanted the worst of the worst [students] at that school. I was advancing and getting out of trouble but then funds for the program were gone,” says Alfaro. For a long time Alfaro belonged to the “worst of the worst” crowd, as he described. “I was back at the streets, doing drugs and getting involved in gangs.” Sammy Nuñez and Norman were Alfaro`s mentors, and even after the program ended they continued helping him. They “literally pulled me out of bed, as they wanted me to continue going to school,” shared Alfaro. Alfaro volunteered with Fathers and Families of San Joaquin for five years, and now works for the nonprofit as an outreach edu-
with young fathers and men, helping them reconnect with their families. “I walked in their shoes and they can trust that I connect with them on that level.” For him, one of problems in society is the lack of employment among youth: “If we had more jobs for youth and young men, crime rates and everything else will go down.” Alfaro is also the father of a baby girl. Being a parent at such young age, plus school and work is “very hard,” noted Alfaro. “My daughter is the reason that I am doing this, so that she won`t grow up in the same environment that I did.” Alfaro still faces several challenges due to his background.” The Stockton Police Department has me under a gang affiliation, but I’m showing them that I am committed to this community.” In the future, Alfaro wants to be part of the Stockton Unified School District’s Board, “I want to make a change in the school system for the youth.” He believes that, “People running the schools need to start asking the youth what they need and want so that they can succeed and continue their education.”

(bw) ATLANTA, GA – Center for Disease control released a report, the Second National Report on Biochemical Indicators of Diet and Nutrition on April 2, 2012. The report found that Mexican-Americans had a slightly higher rate of Vitamin D deficiency, 12 percent than their nonHispanic whites, 3 percent. Vitamin D is essential for bone health and helps prevent cancer and type 2 diabetes. Young women age 20-39 were found to have very low levels of Iodine. Women of this age group also had the lowest iodine levels among any age group of women. Iodine is an essential component of thyroid hormones that regulate human growth and development. Iodine deficiency can include mental retardation, hypothyroidism, goiter and other abnormalities. The report also indicated higher rates of iron deficiency in Mexican-American children aged 1-5 years (11 percent) and Mexican – American women (13 percent) of childbearing age (12 to 49 years) when compared to other race/ethnic groups. If you suspect a vitamin deficiency talk to your doctor before trying to self-diagnose some vitamins, minerals, and metals can do more harm than good if too much is consumed.

Mi Caballero My Knight se convirtio turned malvado Evil By Disgruntled Overdrafter By Disgruntled Overdrafter Hace poco tiempo yo seguí los pasos de muchos el cambiarme de banco (específicamente del Banco de América) hacia un banco Credit Union. Me preguntaron si mi cambio era el resultado de los ‘cobros.” Seria cierto el decir que era por los ‘cobros’ pero yo pienso que se referían a el cobro especifico que hace poco tenia al publico alarmado y yo estaba desertando los sobre cargos después a causa de estar tarde. Si, mis sobre cargos estaban fuera de control. A tal punto que yo necesitaba retomar el control de mi cuenta y en cuanto yo me inscribí a la nueva cuenta yo les pedí que prefiero estar avergonzada en la fila con un montón de comida y ser declinada en vez de ¡tener sobre cargos en mi cuenta! ¡Ya no! El vivir mes-a-mes cada pago era necesario lo mas pronto posible y la promesa de Banco de América de depositar asta las 8:00 p.m. era como un caballero en una armadura brillosa. Cual comprobó ser una buena relación de casi 6 años asta el quinto año esto fue en paz, calmado, y cariñoso y de repente mi caballero de armadura brillosa se convirtió en un malvado. Recientemente, cambio la ley que le permite a los bancos mantener los cheques mas de dos días y ellos te tienen que dar por lo menos $200 cuando uno usa el banquero. ¡Inmediatamente antes de este cambio el banco detuvo mi cheque por 11 días! Yo deposite por 5 años sin ningún problema y de repente detuvieron mi cheque por 11 días. Durante ese tiempo ¡mi cuenta se sobre giro unos $700! De repente tenía una cuenta de crédito de $700 con un interés de 500%. En cuanto me di cuenta de este dilema me comunique con el banco. Claro era mi culpa porque yo no leí mis recibos y esto hizo aceptable que ellos detuvieran mis cheques y no tenían ninguna razón de hacerlo. Una vez que yo pensé que tenia control de mi cuenta ellos continuaron con este problema. La cuenta de banco en el internet automáticamente mandaba cheques con o sin fondos en mi cuenta y removían la cantidad antes que
Just recently I followed the footsteps of many others to switch from a bank (specifically from Bank of America) over to a local credit union. They asked me if it was because of the ‘fees.’ It would be a true statement to say it was because of the ‘fees’ but think they were referring to the specific fee that recently had the public up in arms and I however, was leaving because of Overdraft fees. Yes. My overdraft fees had gotten out of control. To the point that I needed to take back control of my account and when I signed up for my new account I told them- I prefer the embarrassment of standing in line with a load of groceries and being denied than to have another overdraft fee! No more! Living month- to – month each paycheck was needed ASAP and Bank of Americas promise of immediate deposit until 8 PM was like a knight in shining armor which proved to be a good love affair of nearly 6 years until the 5th year it was quiet, peaceful and loving and then all the sudden my knight in shining armor turned evil. Recently, there was a change of law that banks could not hold checks longer than two days and must give you at least a minimum of $200. Immediately prior to this change the bank held my check for 11 days! I had been depositing for 5 years without any issues and all the sudden they held my check for 11 days. Over the course of which I over- drafted my account by $700! All the
sudden were talking a $700 credit line with a 500% interest rate. Once I realized my dilemma I quickly called the bank- of course it was my fault because I did not read my receipt and it was perfectly acceptable for them to hold the check and had no real reason for doing so. Once I finally thought I had a hold on my account it still continued to be an issue. The online banking would automatically send checks with or without the funds in the account and subtract the amount before the company ever deposited the check. I tried cancelling, turning into hours of fidgeting with the system. Okay, now I must have a hold on it! Nope, with the whirlwind of activities, automatic checks, checks that don’t deposit when I think they do, and fees I cannot keep up with; I had no idea what was going in or going out or how much I had so- I had enough and I cancelled it! So far, no embarrassing declines in grocery lines and no overdraft fees. Personally, I don’t know how I ever got signed up for the over drafting to begin with but I am never going back. I believe that Overdraft fees are just another way for banks to charge exorbinent credit fees to the most vulnerable without the governmental restrictions that credit cards have. But when it comes down to it- it is my fault and I’ll never do it again Bank of America. Thank you for that lesson.

No, con el huracán de actividades, cheques automáticos, cheques que no se depositaban cuando deberían y cobros no podía mantener el control; No tenia la menor idea de lo que entraba y lo que salía o cuanto tenia. Esto fue demasiado y lo cancele. Asta ahora, no e tenido ningún momento de vergüen-
za y ningún sobre giro. Personalmente, no se como me inscribieron a la protección de sobre giros pero nunca voy a regresar. Yo pienso que los cargos por sobre giros son otra forma para que los bancos cobren grandes cantidades de cobros por crédito sobre los mas vulnerables sin las restricciones gubernamentales. Restricciones que tienen las tarjetas de crédito. Pero al fondo de todo esto; es mi culpa y yo no lo hare otra vez Banco de América. Gracias por la lección.

We cannot complain about the services and the actions of the Board of Supervisors when we sit and do not vote in a person that is willing to be a voice for the everyday person. It is time that we give our support to someone that understands the plight of the common person, it’s time that we inform the County of San Joaquin that we will no longer sit back and allow a few to dictate to the many how they want this county to be run. Step forward and give your support to someone that has the people of this county in the fore front of her agenda, and not political aspirations. A vote for Rhodesia will be a vote for change.

Cinco de Cinco de Mayo Mayo Parade Continua de “un concurso de Rey y Reina de Cinco de Mayo entre los estudiantes de la preparatoria”, explicó Ruiz-Huston, “el ganador del rey y la Reina destacaran durante el desfile en carro alegórico especial.” El Desfile del Cinco de Mayo es sancionado y juzgado por los Jueces de la Costa del Pacífico. The program also of fers a $1,000 grant to graduates who desire to start a small business. “Keep in mind that every time you are late with a monthly payment there is a fee, a penalty, which comes out of your account,” explained Joe Diaz, Coordinator and Instructor of the Program. “You must be careful with your finances and plan to not lose the money; rather, pay yourselves,” Diaz cautions everyone about being late with their payments.
