Estudiantes del Colegio Delta ganan medallas de oro en la competencia de SkillsUSA Mayra Barrios (bw) Diecinueve estudiantes del Colegio San Joaquín Delta ganaron medallas de oro en la competencia de la Región 5 SkillsUSA, la cual se llevo a cabo el mes de enero en las instalaciones del colegio. Este fue el segundo año consecutivo que el Colegio Delta es el anfitrión de las preliminares de la competencia, la cual atrajo a más de 500 estudiantes para competir. SkillsUSA es una organización nacional sin fines de lucro que colabora con los estudiantes, maestros y la industria para garantizar la preparación de los estudiantes para carreras técnicas, de comercio y trabajadores calificados de servicios. “La variedad de habilidades que se evalúan es impresionante. This was the second year in a row Delta has hosted a preliminary SkillsUSA competition, which attracted over 500 students to compete. SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization that partners with students, teachers and industry leaders to prepare students for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. “The variety of skills tested is impressive. SkillsUSA helps students stay at the forefront of the latest technologies in their disciplines. To compete and earn an award in a SkillsUSA event is validation of an individual’s ability,” said Taddei. The competition winners may reap future rewards in the job market, added Taddei:

Jeremy Terhune es un defensor de la comunidad y Director Ejecutivo de PUENTES (Promotores Unidos para la Educación Nacional de Tecnologías Sostenibles). Terhune se describe como un “niño muy curioso” y activo el cual le encantaba subirse a los árboles. Terhune, también está involucrado en otras organizaciones como son Los Defensores de la Fauna y los Amigos del Río Calaveras. Su pasión por la defensa del medio ambiente y la conservación comenzó desde sus años de estudiante en la universidad mientras ayudaba con un pequeño jardín orgánico que proporcionaba alimentos para familias de bajos ingresos en Chico, California. Después de la universidad Terhune se inscribió a la organización Peace Corps (Cuerpos de Paz) y vivió varios años en Panamá. “Fue a través del Peace Corps, donde encontré mi compromiso, inspirándome a ser un motor de cambio en el medio ambiente y en el desarrollo internacional.” Lejos de traer buenos recuerdos a su casa en Stockton desde de vivir en Panamá, Terhune trajo el concepto de emprendimiento social. Jeremy Terhune is a community advocate and Executive Director of PUENTES (Promoters United for a National Education on Sustainable Technologies). Terhune describes himself as a “very curious kid,” elaborating that he was an active child who loved climbing trees. In addition to PUENTES, Terhune is also involved with the Defenders of Wildlife and Friends of the Calaveras River. His passion for environmental advocacy and conservation started when he was a college student, helping run a small organic garden that provided food for low-income families in Chico, California. After college, Terhune join the Peace Corps: an experience that allowed him to spend several years in Panama. “It was through the Peace Corps where I found my commitment,” Tehune reminisced. His experience inspired him to be an engine for change in environment and international development. Far from all the good memories from Panama, Terhune brought to Stockton a concept of social entrepreneurship. Upon his arrival, he started PUENTES` first project: the first urban farm in Stockton at Boggs Track. PUENTES
is a project that attempts to help disadvantaged families by teaching them how to grow and sell their own food while simultaneously offering training and educational opportunities. Terhune`s biggest challenge in working in this community is “how we see hunger.” Terhune envisions a plan that would solve hunger from its roots by teaching people how to be sustainable: not by simply providing food aid a few days.

He speaks both English and Spanish fluently, “I love the Latino culture and Panama; I have a lot of close friends there.” As Terhune continues his advocacy work, he hopes to help build a confident and strong community. “We spend too much time getting people together to act on issues and not on building people up as leaders to continue advocating for themselves on a more prolonged basis.”

In an e-mail to the Stanford Daily, Tubbs revealed that his speech was designed to express, “the long road to victory we have in battling: poverty, crime, hopelessness and a political power system.” Additionally, he emphasized the importance of education, stating: “I will work to advance education… so, I can help Sara Cazares and the school board to make sure the schools are educating our kids,” said Tubbs while looking toward Sara Cazares, President of the Board at Stockton Unified School District, who made a return appearance for Tubbs’ announcement following weeks in the hospital due to

Tubbs’ story one of triumph as he is a, “son of an incarcerated father and a teenage mother.” A product of Stockton Schools —he is a Franklin High school graduate—Tubbs received a fullride scholarship to Stanford University. Tubbs is poised to graduate from Stanford with honors on his bachelor’s degree and a master’s in Policy, Organization, and Leadership Studies in May. In his speech, Tubbs referenced his experience working in the White House, helping craft the Obama administration’s strategy for engaging with mayors and city councils nationwide as part of the Bing Stanford Program in Washington D.C. Furthermore, he cofounded the Summer Success and Leadership Academy at the University of the Pacific and currently serves as the founder and executive director of The Phoenix Scholars, a state-wide nonprofit, which to date has helped over 300 high school students apply and matriculate into college.

Resultados del Instituto de Suelo Urbano 2012 Mayra Barrios (bw) Después de quince años el Instituto de Tierra Urbano (el acrónimo en Inglés ULI) de nuevo visitó Stockton para proporcionar recomendaciones a la ciudad para revitalizar el centro. El grupo de nueve panelistas pasaron una semana analizando la ciudad y conduciendo más de cien entrevistas individuales para formular un reporte que recientemente fue presentado a los residentes de la ciudad. Aunque la ciudad ha puesto en práctica muchas de las recomendaciones del ULI de la visita de 1997 , de acuerdo con ULI, la revitalización del centro aun está lejos de llegar a su pleno potencial. El centro de Stockton aún le hace falta un suministro adecuado de viviendas multifamiliares y una cantidad significante de inversiones privadas debido al enfoque de Stockton en servicios públicos en vez de sociedades privadas públicas, dice el ULI. Para muchos la 13a ciudad más grande en el Estado de California — la Ciudad de Stockton—se encuentra en las sombras de ciudades urbanas más grandes como Sacramento y San Francisco. 2012 Urban Land Institute Findings STOCKTON, CA - After fifteen years, the Urban Land Institute (ULI) once again visited Stockton to provide recommendations for the city to revitalize its downtown. Nine panelists spent a week analyzing the city, conducting over one hundred individual interviews to frame a report that was recently presented to the city’s residents. Although the city implemented many of the recommendations from the ULI’s 1997 visit, according to the ULI, revitalization remains far from reaching its full potential. Downtown Stockton still lacks an adequate supply of multi-family housing and a significant amount of private investment due to Stockton’s focus on public facilities rather than public-private partnerships, says the ULI. For many, the 13th largest city in the State of California, Stockton, sits in the shadow of bigger urban cities like Sacramento and San Francisco. However, for senior transportation panelist, Heather
Alhadeff, Stockton has many good things to offer. Alhadeff recognized the, “Waterfront, the proximity to destinations, diversity, the Delta, agriculture, the access to fresh vegetables and a great climate,” as some of the City’s assets. The City specifically asked for advice on how to better use four historic hotels owned by the city and some ways to attract potential developers. One of the main pieces of advice given to the city is for property owners, developers, as well as county and city officials to join forces to create permanent partnerships. “There are low cost things that you can do immediately to help build vitality in Stockton and attract more people to create a positive image,” said Ross Tilghman, Director of the Tilghman Group. Tilghman’s suggestions included relocating farmers’ markets to Weber Point and increasing water-based recreation activities like canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing.

The city anticipates a defi-
cit of a minimum of 20 million dollars in the upcoming fiscal year. “We cannot continue to degrade our community and degrade our city by continuing to reduce our services,” Deis noted. “We’ve got to share the burden among creditors.” On Tuesday, February 28th, Deis will seek city council’s approval to further research options to address the city’s financial situation by granting the authority, “to suspend certain payments” and “to renew the two year declaration of Stockton’s fiscal emergency.” Additionally the city will attempt to implement measures to correct bookkeeping, make adjustments to the upcoming budget, and to authorize financial restructuring as allowed by Assembly Bill (AB) 506, a new California law on municipal bankruptcies. AB 506 will allow a mediator to meet with stakeholders and city representatives to negotiate solutions outside bankruptcy. City council will be hearing the administration’s strategy at the Council’s Meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday February 28th. It is anticipated that union members and concerned citizens will oppose bankruptcy.

STOCKTON, CA - The San Antonio Scorpions soccer team, a new franchise of the North American Soccer League (NASL), will face the Mexican League team, Dorados de Sinaloa. While Mexicans have had a reputation of being a “macho” community, Choike.org noted that the first world conference on the status of women convened in Mexico City. The conference, known as the General Assembly, was to remind all communities that discrimination against women continued to be much of a problem around the world. Ultimately, the goal of the General Assembly was to promote gender equality and eliminate gender discrimination, facilitate the integration of women in development, and to strengthen world peace. This year, we will celebrate 37 years since we pledged as a world to be united and allow our female companions to share the world, its resources and its responsibilities as equal parts. It is irresponsible for today’s men not to extend every possibility for equality. History has demonstrated that partnerships work more effectively when compared to individuals attempting to hold women back. We encourage all men to take advantage of the month of March to inform others that rather than spending time holding women back, it is more advantageous to partner in progress together. Let us consider and provide equal access for women to resources such as education, employment opportunities, political participation, health services, housing, nutrition and family planning. OPINION: OPINION: Plan de Energia de Obama’s Obama Energy Plan El día de la inauguración de Barack Obama, los precios de la gasolina estaban en un promedio de $1.83 por galón a lo largo de la nación. En los cortos años, los precios se han subido más del doble y hoy están a $4 y asta $5 por galón. El Secretario de Energía de Obama, Steven Chu, dijo en el 2008 que es su deseo el aumentar los precios de la gasolina a los $7 a $9 por galón. Obama apoyo lo dicho por Chu que el prefiere “ajustes graduales.” Bueno, América esta recibiendo el “ajuste gradual” y si Obama recibe otros cuatro años, tendremos gasolina a $7 a $9 por galón. Sin importar el intento de Obama a pasar la culpa otros, el no puede esconderse de la verdad. El no tiene ninguna política de energía. América depende del petróleo foráneo. Los Demócratas han vetado toda legislación para perforar aquí en América mientras intentamos cerrar la separación en energías alternativas. Sin política de energía, todos los americanos continuaran siendo lastimados por esta política mensa.

On the day of Barack Obama’s inauguration, gasoline prices averaged $1.83 per gallon nationally. In two short years, prices have more than doubled and today it is $4 and even $5 per gallon. Obama’s Energy Secretary, Steven Chu, stated in 2008 that it is his desire to boost gasoline prices to the $7-$9 per gallon. Obama followed Chu’s statement that he would prefer a “gradual adjustment.” Well, America is getting the “gradual adjustment” and if Obama gets another four years, we will have $7-$9 per gallon gasoline. In spite of the Obama administration’s attempt to pass blame on others, he can’t hide from the truth. He has no energy policy. America is dependent on foreign oil. The Democrats have vetoed all legislation to open drilling here in America while we bridge the gap to alternative energy.
