Preparatoria Cesar Chavez Cesar Chavez High Enters Compite a State Competition Nivel Estatal La preparatoria Cesar Chávez se une a 24 otras escuelas en California en compiten por becas de $ 2.000 en la competencia anual de ensayo de De La Rosa & Co. Fabric of Society. “Estamos muy emocionados y honrados de ser incluidos en la beca. This is a wonderful opportunity for Chavez students,” said Rebecca King, Guidance Chair Counselor at Cesar Chavez High School. “Rising cost of a college education makes the scholarship extremely valuable.” Cesar Chaves High School was the only high school participating in San Joaquin County. De La Rosa will award at least one $2,000 scholarship at each of the 25 participating high schools. In order to participate graduating seniors will have to write a 600-8000 word

Nicole González es profesora de anatomía en la preparatoria Edison y ganadora del Premio Educador Sobresaliente 2012 Michael McKibbin. Criada en San Mateo, California, a una corta edad González, como la hija mayor ayudo a su padre a criar a sus seis hermanos y hermanas. “Fue muy duro, pero no lo voy a cambiaría por nada en el mundo, porque eso es lo que me hizo ser quien soy hoy. “ “Mi padre siempre enfatizo la educación, mi sueño era ser médico y cuidar de él.” Después de graduarse de la Universidad de California, Santa Bárbara, comienzo a trabajar como profesora sustituto, poco sabía Gonzáles que estaba a punto de descubrir su pasión por la educación. “Tuve la suerte de encontrar algo que realmente me encantó.” Después de impartir clases en la preparatoria Edison por sólo tres años, fue nominada y ganó el premio a nivel estatal de educador del año. “Estoy muy sorprendida al recibir tal honor”, dijo Gonzales. “González encarna la habilidad y el compromiso de todos los profesores de Teacher Corps más de 55.000 educadores que trabajan incansablemente día tras día en las comunidades marginadas y en áreas de alta necesidad para servir a los estudiantes de California. Nicole Gonzales, an anatomy teacher at Edison High School, is the recipient of the 2012 Michael McKibbin Outstanding Educator Award. Raised in San Mateo, California, Gonzales, as the oldest daughter, helped her dad raised her six younger siblings. “It was very hard, but I will not change it for the world because that’s what made me who I am today,” stated Gonzales. “My dad always pushed education; my dream was to become a doctor to take care of him.” After graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara, she began to work as a substitute teacher. Little did she know that she was about to discover her passion for education. “I was lucky to find something that I truly loved.” After teaching at Edison High for only three years, she was nominated and won the state level educator of the year award. “I am very shocked to receive such an honor,” said Gonzales. “Gonzalez embodies the skill and commitment of all Teacher Corps teachers, more than 55,000 educators who work tirelessly day after day in underserved
communities and high-need subjects to serve California students. We know that the right teacher makes all the difference and Gonzalez is the right teacher for the Stockton community,” said California Teacher Corps Founding President, Catherine Kearney. Gonzales believes that when Latino students see their own people as teachers, they identify with them and that encourages them to pursue their dreams, which is her motivation for translating information for her students that are in the process of learning English. “I think it is very important that people from my culture get involved and become teachers.” For Gonzales, the key to being successful in the classroom is to collaborate with other teachers to work across subject matters and create engaging lessons to make school not just educational but fun at the same time. Gonzales also helped develop the Edison Health Program with the University of the Pacific and Delta College, a pathway for high school students that choose a career in the health industry to graduate both college and career and ready.

Candidato para el Consejo Municipal puede ser la voz Latina en Stockton STOCKTON, CA — Tres puestos en el Consejo Municipal de la Ciudad de Stockton se abren para la primaria del 5 de junio y la elección del 2 de Noviembre. En el 4º distrito Moses Zapien desafia a la titular Diana Lowery. “La promesa que dirigió mi familia y a muchos otros Stocktonianos para establecer sus vidas aquí se esta destiñendo rápidamente. El legado de mi familia es uno de mis inspiraciones para correr a el puesto del ayuntamiento,” observó Zapien. Zapien es el primer Latino que anuncia su candidatura en la campaña del Consejo Municipal; si el gana, Zapien se uniría a Susan Talamantes-Eggman como el segundo Latino en el Consejo de la Ciudad de Stockton. Si Eggman gana su candidatura para el 13o Distrito en la Asamblea de California, el se convertiría en la única voz Latina en el Consejo. “Mi padre es de León, Guanajuato y mi madre es de Guadalajara, Jalisco. Mi patrocinio es muy importante para mi, y seria un honor ser la voz de la población Latina en Stockton,” explico Zapien. STOCKTON, CA –Three Stockton City Council seats are up for election in the June 5th Primary and November 2nd General election. In District 4, Attorney Moses Zapien is challenging incumbent, Diana Lowery. “The promise that led my family and so many other Stocktonians to establish their lives here is quickly fading. My family’s legacy is one of my inspirations to run for City Council,” remarked Zapien. Zapien is the first Latino to announce his candidacy in this year’s race for city council; should he win, Zapien would join Susan Talamantes-Eggman as a second Latino on Stockton’s City Council. Should Eggman win her run for the 13th Assembly District in the California Legislature, he may become the sole Latino voice on City Council. “My father is from Leon, Guanajuato and my mother from Guadalajara, Jalisco. My heritage is very important to me, and it would be an honor to be the voice of Stockton’s Latino population,” explained Zapien. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the Hispanic/ Latino population comprises 40.36% of Stockton’s total population, and 44% speak a language other than English at home. “There is a lot of work to be done,” said Zapien, as he
explained that working hard was a value he learned from his parents’ ingenuity in establishing their businesses. His father opened a manufacturing business here in Stockton at the age of 23, and his mother owns a local bookstore. Zapien is the former Chair of the Stockton Civil Service Commission and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Stockton. He attended the University of the Pacific and Humphreys College School of Law. He worked in the District Attorney’s Office before going into private practice with the law firm of James M. Morris. “He would be an outstanding council person,” said John Vera, President of the Board at Mary Graham Children’s
Foundation. “I’m very impressed with his ideas about government, concern about the city of Stockton, and apparent willingness to roll up his sleeves and get to work for the city.” “He is a precise person, he takes time to gather facts to make sound decisions, and he is a man with honesty and integrity,” said the CEO of the Central Valley Neighborhood Harvest, Don Aguilard. Aguilar serves with Zapien on the Public Civil Service Commission and community gardening project. Moses Zapien will be running against Incumbant Diana Lowery in the District 4 City Council election that will be on the June 5, 2012 ballot with a citywide runoff scheduled for November.

For over 55 years, Benigno has operated farm businesses in San Joaquin, an experience he is using to address some of the issues in agriculture by, “easing some of the regulations on farmers who need help, as in chipping, burning, chemical use and many more,” noted Benigno. “Farming is the back bone of most of the valley and we need to help consumers by making food more affordable.” Benignos’s key issues are to expand the Stockton airport, which he estimates would generate millions of dollars of revenue and jobs, mobilize the Stockton Port, and “to build a wing at San Joaquin General Hospital for returning vets who need medical and prosthesis help which is being built in French Camp,” explained Benigno. Anthony 2012 reconocen el talento y la dedicación de cada diez mujeres en el condado de San Joaquín, en una ceremonia en el Golf Country Club de Stockton y el jueves 16 de febrero. La Comisión sobre la Condición de la Mujer del condado de San Joaquín creo los Premios Susan B. Anthony hace 36 años para honrar los logros de las mujeres de la comunidad. Entre las galardonadas del premio 2012 se encuentra la Dra. Sylvia Ulmer, directora de Educación Primaria en el Distrito Escolar de Stockton (por sus siglas en Ingles SUSD). Anthony awards recognized the talent and dedication of ten women in San Joaquin County in a ceremony held at the Stockton Golf and Country Club on Thursday February, 16. The San Joaquin County Commission on the Status of Women created the Susan B. Anthony Women Awards 36 years ago to honor women’s achievements. Among the recipients of the 2012 award is Dr. Sylvia Ulmer, Director of Elementary Education at Stockton Unified school District (SUSD). Born in El Salvador, Ulmer came to the United State at the age16 years old and worked alongside her family, harvesting the crops of the region. “While working in the fields, Sylvia began what was to become a life calling to

Count Mephisto Hazlo Bien, o no Do it right, or lo agás para nada don’t do it at all El viernes, 17 de Febrero, 2012, el Stockton Record reporto que la Ciudad de Stockton planea recortar su meta de 90% vivienda en el centro. La meta fue establecida en un proyecto del 2009 para combatir el cambio climático con la visión de crear 3,000 nuevas viviendas — esa meta se a recortado a 300. También en el artículo se menciono un discurso después de la visita del Instituto de Tierras Urbanas a Stockton. Este fue la segunda visita del Instituto de Tierras Urbanas, la primera se efectuó en el 1997. Como persona en el público, fue doloroso escuchar como los panelistas decían que sus recomendaciones fueron mencionadas en el reporte del 1997, y que la implementación de sus recomendaciones aun son necesarias para revitalizar el centro de la ciudad. Estas dos situaciones nos hacen preguntar: ¿Estarán los líderes realimente haciendo los cambios que los consejeros, ciudadanos preocupados, y “interesados” recomiendan? O ¿sus recomendaciones solo son sugerencias vacías? Cuando pensamos en los cambios que se han efectuado en el centro como resultado de la primera visita del Instituto de Tierras Urbanas, podemos ver el Hotel Waterfront, el Puerto, el nuevo Estadio, y la Nueva Arena. Tenemos un hermoso teatro cinematográfico, unos buenos restaurantes. Pero también tenemos un increíble espacio vacante disponible para ser rentado, nuestro cuerpo policiaco en bicicleta que fueron encargados de asegurar que los que visitan el Centro se sientan seguros, ahora se recortaron sus puestos, las fachadas de los puestos en el centro se han desgastado, y el espacio que antes fue Paragary’s y después fue SASS nos recuerda de como una inversión puede ir mal. Es triste que el horario de buen desarrollo que llego a principios del 2000 ahora esta bajo el sombrio a falta de personas que utilicen esos desarrollos. On Friday, February 17, 2012, the Stockton Record reported that the city of Stockton plans to cut its downtown housing goal by 90%. The goal was set in a 2009 project to combat climate change, and envisioned creating 3,000 new residences—that goal has been cut to 300. Also mentioned in the article was a panel discussion following a visit to Stockton by the Urban Land Institute. This was the Urban Land Institute’s second visit, the first of which took place in 1997. As an audience member, it was disheartening to hear the panelists’ statements that their current suggestions had been mentioned in the 1997 report, and the implementation of those suggestions is still necessary to revitalizing our downtown. These two situations make us beg the question: Are Stockton’s leaders really making the changes our consultants, concerned citizens, and “stake holders” suggest? Or are their actions just hollow gestures? When we think of the changes made to downtown in the wake of the first visit by the Urban Land Institute, we can see the Waterfront Hotel, the Port, the new Stadium, and the Arena. We have a lovely movie theater, and good restaurants. But we also have an incredible amount of vacant spaces open for rent/lease, our bicycle police that were tasked with making sure downtown-goers felt safe have been cut, dilapidated storefronts distract from the area’s potential, and the vacant space that housed Paragary’s and later Sass sits as a reminder of investment gone wrong. It is sad that the litany of good developments that came in the early 2000s have been overshadowed by the lack of people who are utilizing those developments. Representatives from the Urban Land Institute stated that we need a critical mass of businesses that can bring people downtown—trendy restaurants, hip boutiques, art galleries, and housing. A suggested development would incorporate a half-mile strip downtown between Miner Avenue and Weber Avenue to serve as the nucleus for later projects, with residences being central tenants of this establishment to ensure that businesses downtown had an easily accessible population to serve. With enough housing downtown, basic necessities—like a grocery store or a health clinic—may also appear, making downtown a tenable place in which to live. And having this epicenter of culture, cuisine, and community may curtail the all too present threat to the environment and even to our agricultural community—urban sprawl. Overall, the Urban Land Institute’s conclusion is that Stockton currently in a mise en place stage, harkening to the French idea of preparatory work that takes place in restaurants, from setting tables to readying ingredients for their later use on the line. That is, we are in a position now where we should be making plans for our future so that when we have the resources to revitalize our community, we will also have the plans in place to do it correctly. But with our track record of not doing things on the scale necessary to ensure their success, it is necessary to tell our city representatives to do it right, or don’t do it at all. —Gaylord Garcia

The Health Fair is hosted by the VNCARES Committee in collaboration with the University of the Pacific and over 30 local health organizations to provide free health services to the underserved community. “As pharmacy students, we strive to apply our knowledge by reaching out to the community,” said Peter Lai, pharmacy student and representative of VNCARES. “These health fairs are a great opportunity for us to practice providing our services and helping people in need.” Blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, bone mineral density, immuniza-
tions, scoliosis, eye, and ear screenings are some of the free services provided at the fair. In total it can cost over $250 for all of the screenings. A lot of these screenings can indicate the prevalence of diseases, called “silent killers,” such as high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and diabetes. High blood pressure can lead to stroke and heart failure, while diabetes can cause a whole host of complications like kidney failure and blindness, says Lai. “There are no symptoms for these diseases until it is too late, so catching them earlier will definitely make an impact on the person’s well being.” In previous years, more than 500 individuals attended the fair. There will also be various education booths as well as activities for children and translators to help the public.
