Ex Edificio de Restaurante Nenas se quema Stockton, CA — El martes 21 de Enero del 2012; personas marcaron el 911 [línea de emergencia] después de que humo saliera retorciéndose de un edificio ubicado en el 1604 Waterloo Road cerca de la calle “D” — el ex edificio del Restaurante Nena`s se quemaba en llamaradas. “Mi hermano, Zeke… fue entre los primeros en marcar el 911, cuando empezó a salir humo del viejo edificio del Restaurante Nena`s en la Waterloo,” dijo Joel Reyna nativo de Stockton quien reporto que cinco camiones de bomberos llegaron al local en las primeras tres horas del incendio y que la luz se apagó en el vecindario. El noticiero de CBS Sacramento reporto que al terminar la noche Siete (7) camiones se habían enviado al incidente. Former Nena’s Restaurant Buidling Burns Stockton, CA — Monday, January 30, 2012; 911 calls were made as smoke was billowing out of a vacant building at 1604 Waterloo Road near “D” Street — the former Nena’s Restaurant building was blazing on fire. “My brother, Zeke… was among first to dial 911, when smoke began to pour out of the old Nena’s Restaurant on Waterloo,” Said Stockton Native Joel Reyna who reported that while there for three hours he saw fire trucks arrived to the scene and that the power was out in the neighborhood, CBS Sacramento reported that by the end of the night Seven (7) engines had been dispatched to the scene. The cause of the fire stills under investigation, according to the Stockton Fire Department all that is known is that the fire appears to have started in the basement of the restaurant, and that the building had been empty for
over a year without electricity and gas. “We feel very bad,” says Maria Elena Reyes, Owner of Nena’s Restaurant and former owner of the building. “We were in that location for over 20 years, many dreams and hopes were left there.” According to Ron Chapman member of the Group of Historians of Stockton, “Nena’s Restaurant in Waterloo Road ... used to Murphy’s in the late 50’s and early 60’s, they gathered a truck to see baseball games of the Giants [San Francisco]. THUGGDORK Continues from Cover “My dream is to fill the Stockton Arena… better yet to have the Astrodome in Huston Texas full,” shared Thuggdork, also known as Reggie Galindo, Stockton based comedian. Audiences at the Stockton Civic, the Bob Hope, Weber Point and the Empire Theatre have learned that as Thuggdork approaches the stage, they are going to enjoy more than stand-up comedy, “the stage is set-up for a full production that includes animating the characters, with lighting and sounds that augments the experience,” he explained how his preparation includes a detailed analysis of posture, timing, and ambiance. Thuggdork defines his style as organic Latin comedy; a style that allows a natural flow of jokes for him to ride the laughs of his audience with a guideline flexible for him to impromptu. “When I’m on stage, or off stage, I focus on one thing… to make people laugh.” However, Thuggdork believes that he should not have been a comedian; “my tattoos are from my rough background growing in Stockton.” Galindo was born and

Dentistas, estudiantes y voluntarios se unen para dar a los niños una sonrisa saludable en el evento “Give Kids a Smile” (Da a los niños una sonrisa) que se llevo a cabo el Sabado, 04 de febrero en la clínica dental de la Universidad del Pacífico. La Sociedad Dental de San Joaquín comenzó el programa “Give Kids a Smile” en el 2003 para promover la buena salud bucal en la comunidad. El programa ofrece chequeos gratuitos, examenes, limpiezas, radiografías y otros tratamientos dentales para niños y menores de 17 años “Estamos brindando atención gratuita a los más necesitados en el área de San Joaquín, las personas sin seguro”, Bruce Toy, miembro de la Sociedad de Dentistas del Condado de San Joaquín, “las personas que no pueden pagar una visita al dentista.” “Empezamos el programa con sólo alrededor de 65 niños,” dice Toy. Casi diez años después del comienzo del programa y con la ayuda

The San Joaquin Dental Society started “Give Kids a Smile” in 2003 to promote good oral health in the community. The program provides free check-ups, screenings, cleanings, x-rays and other dental treatments to kids 17 and under “We are providing free care for the underserved in the San Joaquin area, people without insurance,” says San Joaquin Dental Society Dentist, Bruce Toy,” people that cannot afford a dentists visit.”
“We started with serving only about 65 kids,” said Toy. Almost ten years later since the program started and with the help of the Pacific School of Dentistry, today we expect today probably about 300 kids today, about 100,000 worth of care.” On average each patient will received an average of $300 worth of free dental care.
Dentist visits are just too expensive says Stockton resident Margarita Garcia, who took her 9 and 6 year old daughters to the free clinic. “No matter what you have to wait, free dental cleanings for children is worth it,” said Garcia. More than 300 volunteers including dentists, assistants, teachers, students made the event possible.

(bw) Mobile Clinic seeks to increase cancer screening rates among Latinas The St. Joseph’s Mobile Mammography Unit visited Stockton on Friday, January 3rd, as part of a program to provide digital screening mammography services to women living in San Joaquin County. “Having an annual mammogram helps in teaching women the importance of the exam,” said Marivel Costa, Resource Coordinator of the Mobile Mammography Program. The percentage of Latinos screened for cancer remains below national targets, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). “It is troubling to see that not all Americans are getting the recommended cancer screenings and that disparities continue to persist for certain populations,” said Sallyann Coleman King, officer in the CDC’s Division of Cancer Prevention and Control. “Screening can find
breast and cervical cancers at an early stage when treatment is more effective,” This full-service mammography clinic on wheels is the first mobile unit of its kind in Northern California, targeting women facing financial barriers, living in hard-toreach outlying areas, and lacking access to mammography services. “Approximately 70% of our patients are Latinas” says Costa. The going rate for a screening mammogram is between $200 - $300 dollars, explains Costa. “Our program offers a ‘low-cost’ rate of $80 for the screening mammogram. “For the majority of our patients, there is no direct cost. The services are covered
by the patient’s insurance, or through one of the various special funding programs.” Although women ages 5074 years should be screened for breast cancer every two years, some are hesitant to get a mammogram because they are “scared of the unknown” says Costa. According to St. Joseph’s Medical Center more than 800,000 women over the age of 40 reside within the geographic area designated to receive MMU visits, and it is estimated that more than 81,000 have never had a mammogram. The Mobile Mammography Unit plans to visit community clinics and migrant worker centers in other counties of the Central Valley.

Gay Westfall, Senior Vice President of Human Resources at Kaiser, countered that the union’s allegations that Kaiser is proposing to eliminate retirement benefits are simply untrue. “Our union is striking for short stuffing, long patient waits; we are speaking on behalf of our patients because we are concerned as clinicians that they are not getting the care they need,” said Khon. Officials said the walkout had little impact on operations. A day before the strike, Kaiser sent out mass-emails to their members and patients, alerting them about the strike. “Kaiser Permanente medical centers will remain open during the work stoppage,” read the email. Westfall explained that Kaiser Permanente has been waiting for more than six months for a proposal from NUHW in response to

Although the nurses from the California Nurses Association Union (CNA) have fair contracts, many of them decided to walk off the job and join the picket lines. This is the second time in four months that CNA is choosing to strike —even though Kaiser and CNA’s union are not in bargaining on a contract, and won’t be for another two years. The negotiation between Kaiser and the NUHW, which represents mental health and optical workers, began in 2010. “Kaiser Permanente Northern California has been bargaining in good faith with NUHW for more than a year and we will continue to do so,” said Westfall.

Estudio CDC explora homicidios de pandillas Estudio CDC explora la relación entre drogas, balaceras desde autos, y otros crímenes en homicidios de pandillas Homicidios causados por pandillas constantemente ocurren en áreas publicas y la mayoría de veces estos crímenes incluyen armas de fuego. Pero, estos homicidios son menos propensos a incluir drogas. A contra de lo que muchos piensan, muertes causadas por pandillas no incluyen otro tipo de crimen. CDC study explores role of drugs, drive-by shootings, and other crimes in gang homicides The majority of gang homicides occur in public areas, and these crimes often involve firearms. However, these homicides are less likely to involve drugs. Unlike what many community members believe, gang-related deaths do not tend include other crimes. According to a report released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention on January 26, 2012, gang homicides frequently involve youth as victims and are usually retaliatory reactions to gang conflict. The highest proportions of gang homicide victims were 15-19 years of age, and in Los Angeles and Oakland the victims were mostly Hispanics. This report analyzed data
from between 2003 and 2008 from large cities in 17 states, and found five cities had the highest levels of gang homicides ― Los Angeles, CA; Oklahoma City, OK; Long Beach, CA; Oakland, CA; and, Newark, NJ. Homicide is the second leading cause of death among persons aged 15–24 years in the United States. The CDC supports a number of initiatives designed to prevent youth from joining gangs and from becoming involved in violence. However, citizens and council members question if the development of the Marshall Plan is moving in the “right” direction. “The committee does not reflect grass root community leaders who experience crime firsthand,” highlighted Robert Rojas,
Director of the Multicultural Heritage Council. Also, the implementation of the plan was a concern, “Is going to be a year before we come up with the final product, crime is something that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later,” said Councilman Dale Fritchen. During the meeting Deis proposed investing $150,000 to hire an outside consultant, David Bennet, to lead the committee. Bennet is an expert in jails and courts, his Utah record demonstrates that he can “produced change”, noted Deis, who has worked with Bennet in the past. “There is no way I can support paying $150,000 dollars for a consultant from out-ofstate to come in and tell us what we need to do to solve our crime problem,” said Fritchen. The other Council members support hiring the consultant. Meanwhile, as the discussion and planning of the Marshall Plan continues, the police department looks for ways to be proactive on the streets. “During this entire process, we had to be innovative, and look for the best practices with limited staffing,” said Interim Chief of Police, Blair Ulring, also present at the meeting. This year, 17 more officers will be added to the Stockton Police Department, bringing the staffing level to 361 officers of the 441 the department had a couple years ago; this is “much better than where we are today” says Ulring.

DOES IT REALLY MATTER?
Estimadas personas de la Diócesis de Stockton El Viernes, 20 de Enero, 2012, el Departamento de Salud y los Servicios Humanos de los EEUU (HHS) decidió que virtualmente todos las opciones de salud privadas son requeridas a incluir esterilización y conservativos, incluyendo drogas para inducir abortos. Una restricción “excepción religiosa” es proporcionada para grupos que solo proporcionan servicios para personas con la misma creencia en una situación muy limitada como es la parroquia y personas empleadas dentro de su propia fe. Pero, la iglesia católica en sus servicios sociales y de salud cubre a todos los que necesitan ayuda. En efecto, la decisión de HHS asume a definir como la Iglesia Católica, o otras instituciones religiosas, deben efectuar su ministerio como expresión de su fe. Dear People of the Diocese of Stockton Dear People of the Diocese of Stockton, On Friday, January 20, 2012, the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) ruled that virtually all private health plans will be required to include sterilization and contraceptives, including abortion-inducing drugs. A very restricted “religious exemption” is granted to religious groups only if they are serving people of the same belief in a very narrow setting such as a parish and employ people of their own faith. However, the Catholic Church, in her health and social services, reaches out to all those in need. In effect, the HHS ruling is presuming to define how the Catholic Church, or any religious institution, is to carry out its ministry as an expression of its faith. Essentially it is saying that freedom of religion pertains only to freedom of worship and religious teaching but not to the practice of religious faith in the charitable, social and health institutions of the Church. Some have pointed out the irony that under this definition, Jesus’ miracles and care for those around him would not qualify as religious. This ruling represents an alarming intrusion of government into the affairs of the Catholic Church and other faith communities. It would require us to pay for, and provide in our insurance coverage, what the Church teaches to be morally wrong and a violation of Catholic teaching. This ruling, left unchanged, would put the Church into the untenable position of being required to violate her conscientious beliefs when she provides needed health insurance for her employees. The conditions of the mandate are unconstitutional and violate the First Amendment because the government is overreaching its power in legislating which Church ministries will be exempted and which ones will not. It is outside the power of government to define religion in any way whatsoever. It also sets up a religious test to see whether our ministries are serving Catholics or nonCatholics. If the government can intrude into the workings of the Catholic Church, it can intrude into any religious organization in matters that are internal to the religious organization. The Administration considers the mandate to be final. We have been given until August 1, 2013 to comply. WHAT CAN WE DO? We must explore and pursue every option to repeal or reverse this unjust mandate through persuasion, advocacy, litigation and other means to protect religious liberty for all. We must especially convince Congress of the need for legislative action to overturn this injustice. You can do your part by contacting your federal legislators to begin this essential process. Until and unless a full cost/benefit analysis is performed, the ratepayers and taxpayers will remain completely in the dark. My guess is this is by design. If we knew the actual cost, acknowledged who will be footing the majority of the bill and realized who the primary beneficiaries are, then the 1% would have a much tougher time getting the 99% to allow this without questioning and perhaps defeating this effort. El gimnasio estaba cerrando durante un fin de semana y esta muchacha aun estaba en la alberca, nadie le aviso anterior que estaban a punto de cerrar. Cuando llego el tiempo un empleado finalmente le aviso a la mujer que estaban cerrando. Ella espero fuera del área de vestirse con la mano en la cadera esperando unos minutos y le estaba gritando ¡apúrense! Yo creo que el empleado fue rudo porque la señora no hablaba Ingles y ella pensó que simplemente podía hacerlo sin problema. Yo escuchaba a la mujer diciéndole a sus niñas, que estaban entre las edades de 5 y 3 “Andale apurence. Yo recomendaría fuertemente que In-Shape enseñe sensibilidad cultural a sus empleos y les proporcione con unas cuantas palabras traducidas para que compartan sus mensajes. Dear Editor, Several months ago an employee at InShape Gym on Hammer lane was extremely rude to a woman and her children. The Gym was getting ready to close on a weekend and this lady was still in the pool, no one gave her a warning that is was going to soon be closing. When the time came an employee finally let the woman know that they were closing. She waited outside the dressing room for her with her hand on her hips waited a couple of minutes and was yelling to her: hurry!. I believe the employee was rude because the lady did not speak English and she felt she could get away with it. I could hear the woman saying to her little girls around the age of 5 and 3, “andale apurence. (hurry). I would highly recommend In-Shape to teach some cultural sensitivity to your employees and providing them with a couple of translated sentences to pass on their messages. As I was also getting ready to leave, no one was rude to me and that I believe to be discrimination. Thank You, In-Shape Member

Early February is the ideal time here in Northern California for starting tomato, pepper and other seeds indoors. Starting your vegetables indoors early can give your garden a jumpstart on spring. It also saves money since seed packs cost as much as one transplant. You can also grow varieties that may be difficult to find in the nursery. The soil media you choose should be fine textured, uniform and airy. Do not use garden soil. It is usually too heavy and often may have disease causing organisms. A commercial potting mix suited to starting seeds will work well. You can make your own mixture: 4 parts well aged compost 2 parts peat moss or coir (be sure to thoroughly moisten the peat moss first) 1 part perlite (aids drainage) If you plant in recycled
containers, sterilize them first with a 1:9 bleach to water solution. Rinse them well and let them air dry prior to use. Planting Fill your containers 2/3 full. The depth should be at least 2 inches and have drainage at the bottom. Scatter seeds thinly over the surface. Check the seed packet for the recommended planting depth, and cover the seeds with the proper amount of mix. Cover seeds to a depth equal to twice their diameter. Label with the plant’s name and the date. Moisten the soil lightly. Watering: Avoid splashing or excessive flooding which might displace small seeds. The soil should be evenly
moist but not wet. Light: Seedlings need bright light to develop properly; when grown in dark conditions, the seedlings are spindly and weak. Make sure that you have indirect but high light around all plants. A south window will work but be sure to rotate the containers to get straight tall plants. If you don’t have a bright sunny window, consider using 2, 40-watt cool fluorescent lights suspended about 6 - 8 inches above the plants, 12 to 14 hours of light each day. In addition you will want to keep the plants at a fairly warm temperature, especially at night. Most vegetables germinate best between 65º to 75° F. Transplanting: When two or three sets of true leaves
develop on the seedling, you can transplant to a 4-6 inch pot, but no larger than a one gallon container. This is important to do if you started your seeds in a flat or in a small peat pot. Prepare the new pot the same as before. Place the seedling, with as much of the original soil as possible to avoid disturbing the roots, into a 1/2 filled pot. Then, add moistened soil mix all along the stem, up to the bottom set of leaves Hardening off: Plants need to be introduced slowly to the elements of wind and intense sun. Hardening off refers to the process of acclimating plants from indoor temperatures to the outdoors. When they reach 2 to 4 inches tall, you can put the plants outdoors only for a couple of hours. You’ll want to set them in a semi-shaded area of the yard. Gradually, increase the time plants are kept outdoors and their exposure to sun. Slowly cut back on watering. This will allow plants to toughen and will prepare them for being transplanted. This process usually takes about 2 weeks. You will want to wait until soil temperature has warmed before planting, late April is usually good.
