Latinos son la 2da minoría victimas de diabetes C ON DA D O DE S A N JOAQUIN, CA — Durante el mes de nov iembre, organizaciones que promueven salud favorecen una mejor educación sobre la diabetes a lo largo de las la nación como par te del Mes de Diabetes en América. Alrededor del mundo el día de diabetes se observa durante el 14 de Noviembre. El Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos de los Estados Unidos (USDHHS por sus cifras en inglés) reporto que la diabetes es la 6ta causa primordial con resultados fatales como resultado de su s c ompl ic ac ione s. A l comparar el Reporte Estatus de Salud 2011 del Condado de San Joaquín cual calcula 26 millones residentes de EEUU viven con diabetes; un aumento de 10 millones si es comparado con el reporte del 1999 USDHHS. De acuerdo al d e p a r t a me nt o d e S a lud Pública de SJ, 8.7 por ciento de los residentes del Condado viven con diabetes; por lo tanto, 59,621 residente de 685,306 han desarrollado diabetes. Worldwide Diabetes Day was obser ved during November 14th. More and more schools, families, and communities are working together to prevent childhood obesity. Students par ticipating will use pedometers to track how many miles they have exercised; the goal is for them to exercise a total of 2,126 miles in a five-month period of time (November-March). Collegeville from Escalon Unified, Waverly Elementary from Linden Unified, Fremont Elementary from Stockton Unified and McKinley in Tracy are some of the twelve schools throughout the San Joaquin County a participating in the program.
Washington. Mrs. Morgan fourth grade teacher at McKinley says that the kids buy into the exercise part at first but is the nutrition part that takes a little bit longer. Te a c h i n g a b o u t t h e importance of a healthy diet and exercise is not only a school`s responsibility but the parents as well. “There is an overweight problem in our children, it is important that parents also help defeat this problem,” said Alma Garcia, Tracy resident and mother of Lesli Arevalo, a 10 year old that is to participate in the program. “We j go out every day we start walking , running and rope jumping, I think that it helps if the teacher does it too so we really try to get out there with them” At the end of the program t he school s w i l l re c eive monetary support to purchase P.E. equipment.

Después de diez largos años de planificación, el Dr. Randy Pinnelli finalmente se está mudando y empieza a tomar su nueva oficina en la Clínica Médica Casa Gleason. La clínica abrió sus puertas a principios de esta semana y es parte del programa de Care Link, que proporciona atención médica libre de costos para la comunidad de personas indigentes sin hogar en la comunidad. Para Pinnelli, coordinador del programa Care Link y también director de la clínica, el cuidado a las personas sin hogar no es nada nuevo, durante los últimos 10 años, sale a las calles y puentes para brindarles atención médica. “Salimos y damos la atención médica que de otro modo estas personas no tendrían”, dijo Pinnelli mientras que nos daba un tour por la clínica. En las calles “, vemos una gran c ant idad de heridas e infecciones de la piel... hicimos cerca de 6,000 consultas médicas en nuestro programa (Link Care) el año pasado “, dijo Pinnelli. Gleason House: A new home for homeless health care Bilingual Weekly After ten long years of planning, Dr. Randy Pinnelli is f inally mov ing-in and settling into what will be a new office at the Gleason House Medical Clinic. The clinic opened its doors earlier this week and is part of the Care Link program which provides no-cost medical care for the homeless community. For Dr. Pinnelli, who has been the program coordinator for Care Link and the Director of the Clinic, providing care for the homeless is nothing new, for the last ten years he have v isited those in need out in the streets and under br idges prov iding medical care. “We go out and
provide the medical care that otherwise these people won’t get,” said Pinnelli, while he gave us a tour of the clinic. In the streets “we see a lot of wounds and skin infections... we [Care Link] served close to 6,000 medical visits in our program last year,” explained Pinnelli. Wit h some of t he latest medical equipment, the clinic will operate 20-hours a week with a capacity to see 12 to 15 patients a day. Among the features of the clinic is a portable and digital medical record for patients, “we will be able to access the system and the medical records, remotely on the street,” he explained how the

system will support the clinics mission. Inside the clinic there is a waiting area, three exams rooms, a treatment room for emergencies plus room for offices and a lunch/ break room. The Gleason House is the former home of Edna Gleason a Stockton native who dedicated her life fighting for those in need. “Ed” was one of the first patients to visit the clinic on Monday and plans to come back to get a flu shot in the next weeks. “I think is really helpful, if it was not for this I probably wouldn’t be able to get some of the medicines that I need,” said Ed. The clinic is conveniently
located on the grounds of the Gospel Mission, along with the family shelter, the men`s program building, the chapel and to two other transition houses. “They have access to all the homeless services all at once,” said Pinnelli. The Homeless Connect Project of San Joaquin County estimates 2,641 homeless people. Dr. Pinnelli clarify some my ths and realities of homele s s popu lat ion. While the Latino population in the count y is close 40 percent, Pinnelli estimates less than 10 percent of them to be considered homeless. “We see more women and children that are homeless,” he explained, “In our program
we see 52 percent women and 48 percent men, we see people up in their 60s but the average age is in their 20s to 30s —a lot of families who have lost their jobs and those who lose their house are forced to live in the streets.” In San Joaquin County there is a total of 16 homeless shelters and even though t hose who a re homele ss have an option to visit the Gleason House clinic, Pinnelli e st i mate s t hat he, “ w i l l continue with the outreach program in the streets as they will not come… you have to go engage them, build relationships which overtime they will feel comfortable to come.”

Se preocupa por el futuro de San Joaquín Erika Cuevas La nativa de Stockton, Erika Cuevas de 17 años, está en su último año de preparatoria en la escuela Benjamin Holt Preparatory Academy. Ella reconoce que su fuerza está en Ingles y escritura; pero, su participación comunitaria reciente le a descubierto una nueva inquietud cual no había descubierto antes — la de leyes y política pública. “yo participe en la academia de liderazgo juvenil en los Tribunales Superiores del Condado de San Joaquín,” explico Cuevas, “este tipo de programas [la academia de liderazgo] le ayuda a jóvenes entender como participar.” Adicionalmente, ella tuvo la experiencia de no tener hogar en base a un programa que le permite a estudiantes dormir en una caja de cartón durante una noche, “Tuvimos la oportunidad de dormir en una caja; ayunamos por 40 horas y pedimos dinero que fue donado para alimentar aquellos con necesidad.” Cuevas recuerda como esas experiencias la inspiraron a involucrarse más en la comunidad con la esperanza de lograr el cambio. En el presente, ella está af iliada a la Comisión Juveni l de la C iud ad de Stockton donde, “intentamos verbalizar la opinión de otros jóvenes frente al Consejo Mu n ic ipa l,” el la e x pl ic o que af iliados de escuelas de preparatorias locales se reúnen para compartir temas, y presentar recomendaciones al figuras públicas. Aparte, ella recientemente se unió al Consejo de Liderazgo Juvenil del Centro de Impacto de Jóvenes (Teen Impact Center) donde ella espera ayudar a disolver la percepción, “yo e aprendido que muchos quieren cambiar la percepción pero ellos no saben cómo arreglarla,” Cuevas cree que, “nosotros [el Consejo de Impacto de Jóvenes] tienen un plan; solo tenemos que ponerlo en acción.” Ella esta esperanzada en animar a otros estudiantes y escuelas a participar en programas que mejoren el futuro de la comunidad local. “es importante tener personas de todos historiales, con diferentes puntos de vista, y diferentes ideas; la diversidad ofrece llegar a una mejor solución a los problemas.” Erika no ha logrado todo por su cuenta, Celia Gómez, la madre de Cuevas se ha dedicado a su éxito. Caring for the Future in San Joaquin: Erika Cuevas Stockton native, 17 year old Erika Cuevas, is a senior at her Benjamin Holt Preparatory Academy. She recognizes her strengths to be English and writing; however, her recent communit y par ticipation has uncovered a passion she had not discovered before — Public Policy and Law. “I participated in a youth leadership academy at the Superior Court of San Joaquin County,” explained Cuevas, “programs like this one [the leadership academy] help kids understand how to become engaged.” Additionally, she e x p er ienc e d a homele s s simulation through a program that allows students to sleep on a box overnight, “We got to experience sleeping in a cardboard box; we fasted for over 40 hours and asked for money which were donated to feed those in need.” Cuevas recalled how her experiences i n s pi r e d her to b e c ome involved in the community in hopes to make a change. Presently, she is a member of the City of Stockton’s Youth Advisory Commission where, “we try to voice the views of other teens before city council,” she explained that members f rom lo c a l h ig h scho ol s meet to share issues and present recommendations for elected officials. Additionally, she r e c ent l y joi ne d t he Teen Impact Center’s Teen Leadership Council where she hopes to help the dissolving perception of the Cit y of Stockton, “I learned that a lot of people want to change that perception but they don’t
know how to fix it,” Cuevas believes t hat, “we [ Teen Leadership Council] have a plan; we just need to put it in action.” She is hopeful to encourage other students and schools to participate in programs that improve the future of the local community. “It’s important to have people from all backgrounds, with dif ferent v iew points and different ideas; the diversity offers a better approach to problems.” Er ik a doesn’t do it a ll alone, Celia Gomez, Cuevas mother is dedicated to her success. Erika shared her appreciation, “I couldn’t do it all by myself.” Gomez helps Cuevas get to all of her appointments, and supports her community involvement. Gomez shared, “I have told her since she was a child that it is extremely important to give back.” She added that, “the Nation is depending on future generations to work hard to maintain a worldwide competitive edge. Cuevas anticipates that in the upcoming 5-years she will complete a master’s program; however, she is pend ing approval of three applications as she submitted petitions for enrollment at Willamette University, University of the Pacific and Mills College. Symphony adds second performance of popular Holiday Concert On the heels of an immensely popular Stockton Pops season opener, the Symphony brings once again Broadway to town as it presents its Holiday Pops concert — on Sunday, December 11, 2011. LA VUELTA DE MICKEY Estuve leyendo la vuelta de Mickey McGuires’, en el periódico local, sobre la situación en la que los EEUU, y el mundo, se encuentra ahora; y me sorprendió sus observaciones incorrectas sobre cómo están las cosas. Pareciera que a él le gusta la parte de ser maestro pero se le olvido que su responsabilidad debe ser la verdad. En el 2006 cuando me postule para el congreso él estuvo presente entre el público mientras McCloskey y yo contestábamos preguntas del público. El otro candidato no se presentó así que hubo un dialogo abierto con el público. El Sr. McGuire le pregunto al Sr. McCloskey y a mi, “¿Que van a hacer con todos los ilegales que se encuentran en este país?” Pete y yo nos vimos el uno al otro y nos preguntamos cómo contestaríamos esa pregunta. Yo conteste primero diciendo, no hay mucho que podamos hacer independientemente pero como nación podíamos corregir el problema. Creo que Pete contesto que el pensaba que la respuesta era el permitir que mas de ellos llegaran a América porque necesitamos personas buenas para trabajar. Yo pensé que esa era una buena respuesta, pero yo le pregunte al Sr. McGuire que es lo que el haría con todos los ilegales que vienen a America. Yo me dirigí a él para decir, usted es un maestro, como manejaría esta situación usted. El nunca contesto la pregunta pero yo pienso que si alguien debió de contestar la pregunta, él era el correcto puesto que el está en la educación. El debió de tener todas las respuestas; pero no tubo. Él era un maestro y entre más estudiantes había,, más impuestos se cobraban para el fondo general, en el cual todos los contribuyentes pagan la cuenta. Esta es una de las versiones que sale de la boca de aquellos maestros liberales que solo quieren tener un trabajo como maestros y una buena pensión a la larga. Ellos, como muchos otros empleados del gobierno, piensan que el dinero nunca se acabara. ¡Están equivocados…! Ahora hasta sus empleos están en riesgo y ellos no saben porque. Este maestro del cual me refiero fue maestro por 30 años. ¿Qué cambio? ¿Las formas en las que el enseñaba o sus ideales en la política?

MICKEY’S SPIN I was reading Mickey McGuires’ spin, in a local paper, on the present political situation in the U.S. and the world, and I was taken back by his incorrect observation of how things are. It seems as though he liked the part of being a teacher but he forgot that his responsibility should have been the truth. In 2006 when I was running for congress he was part of the audience while Pete Mc Closkey and I were answering questions from the audience. The other candidate did not show up so we had an open discussion with the audience. Mr Mc Guire asked Mr. Mc Closkey and I, “WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH ALL THE ILLEGAL’S IN THIS COUNTRY?” Pete and I looked at each other and wondered how were we going to answer that question. I answered first by stateing, there wasn’t too much we could do as individuals but as a whole country we could correct the issue. I think Pete answered that he thought the answer was to allow more of them to come to America because we needed good hard working people. I thought that was a good answer, but I asked Mr. Mc Guire what he was going to do with all the illegal’s that come to America. I directed the question to him as to say, you’re a teacher, how would you handle the situation. He never answered the question but I thought if anyone could have an answer, he could being that he was an educator. He should have all the answers but he didn’t. He was a teacher and the more students we had, the more taxes were collected into the general school fund, in which all the tax payers would be picking up the tab. This is just one of the versions that comes out of the mouths of those liberal teachers who just want to have a job teaching and a good pension down the road. They, as many government workers, think the money will never dry up. They were mistaken..!! Even their jobs are now in jeopardy and they can’t tell you why. This teacher I write about was a teacher for 30 years. What changed? The way he was teaching or his political ideas?

Jardines PUENTES Puentes Gardens continua de portada El titulo PUENTES se forma en base a las cifras de su titulo Promotores Unidos por una Educación Nacional de Tecnología Sostenible. Como agencia sus afiliados elaboran jardines disponibles para las familias que desean cultivar verduras y así garantizar acceso a alimentos nutritivos. Javier Gardea, activo miembro en los jardines explica el concepto de emprendimiento social detrás de PUENTES. “La idea es crear un mercado para generar ingresos la hortaliza con el tiempo va a generar el dinero suficiente para ser financieramente autosuficiente.” Jeremy Terhune, organizador urbano agrícola, trajo el concepto a Stockton después de ver un proyecto similar en Panamá. Javier Gardea, speaking on behalf of his Boggs Tract family explained that the concept of the social entrepreneurship project is to is to create a farmers’ market to generate revenue. “The farm will eventually generate enough money to become financially selfsustaining,” noted Gardea. Jeremy Terhune, urban farm organizer, brought the idea to Stockton after he saw a similar project in Panama. In Stockton, Grassroots, another local nonprofit organization, along with 20 families of the area have made a commitment to maintain the farming bed at Boggs Tract. “This is project brings a whole community together to improve the quality of
our food and to look at the global social issue of food security,” says Mirna Juarez, Grassroots, co-founder. Studies demonstrate that organic vegetables are generally more expensive than their conventional counterparts, and reports also demonstrate that areas with limited funds have higher levels of obesity resulting in health concerns. “The urban garden will make organic food available to all at a lower cost then what they are sold for at the stores,” shared Lodi resident and active participant in the garden, Michelle Ruiz-Esparza, “an increase in the consumption of fruit and vegetables in people’s diets is vital to reduce health problems like malnutrition.” PUENTES is expected to produce in the summer vegetable season of 2012. However in addition to its gardens the agency will provide FREE garden and composting workshops for the public.
