Dear Ashley Hall Community,

y all measures, this has been another great year at Ashley Hall. The school exists for

the students, and they have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and artistically. For a relatively small school with a very long history, it has always been about having each girl reach her full potential – honing her own unique talents. As an example of how successful the girls were last year, members of the graduating class were accepted at many of our nation’s most distinguished, prestigious universities. While doing that, they collectively amassed $2.3 million in scholarships to the universities of their choice. Among the many accolades for the class of 2012, one graduate was awarded the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship to the University of North Carolina. The discerning reader will wonder how is it that Ashley Hall can compete so well nationally given its size. There are many factors at play. To start, the admission process insures that girls accepted dedicated faculty has been creative in formulating curriculum, creative arts and athletics that fosters individual achievement. Under the dynamic leadership of Jill Muti, Ashley Hall has been innovative in program development and has become a leader among independent schools in our nation. Just one example of the originality of Ashley Hall is the creation of the international student program that brings residential students from other countries to study on our campus. We have the only international boarding program in the lowcountry and one of the relatively few in the country. This is important as you think about the present and future and how the international program is so essential to the creation of a confident, worldly woman prepared to lead in our society. The computer has reduced the world to a little square screen, but girls who have learned to live and grow with real world citizens are prepared for this brave new world in which they will live. Finally, the school’s commitment to its students’ wellness in body and mind creates graduates who are fit and agile in their thinking and actions. The future looks brighter than ever for Ashley Hall, and the challenge for all of us is to nurture the culture of support that has in the past and must in the future increase so that Ashley Hall, like its students, meets its full potential. The Board of Trustees is committed to this, and we invite all who care about our school to join us in actions to sustain and improve Ashley Hall.

Dear Friends of Ashley Hall,

hank you so much for warmly welcoming me into the Ash-

ley Hall family. My first year at Ashley Hall has already left me in awe. Of course, there is the obvious, the majestic trees, beautiful buildings, state of the art facilities and abundance of history, but within the core of Ashley Hall, there is so much more. A glimpse of my day includes a 7th grader hugging her “little sister,”

the Red Choir singing beautiful songs which can be heard throughout the offices of the McBee house, 1st graders petting and hugging the school dog, McBee, 3-year-olds planting cabbage in the garden, a senior visiting a counselor inquiring how to prepare for college, and a smiling 5th grader holding hands with her future bridesmaids. Outside of the basic needs, the most important things we can give our children are a good education and solid values. Your decision to support Ashley Hall is a trust, supporting this

The 1909 Society

The 1909 Society, Ashley Hall’s oldest giving society, honors donors who annually give $1,500 or more to the Loyalty Fund. The 1909 Society, founded in 1984 to mark Ashley Hall’s 75th anniversary, is open to the community and offers special benefits. This leadership giving group annually donates nearly 70% of the unrestricted dollars raised by the Loyalty Fund. Thank you to these incredible leaders!

Our family has always been passionate about music and the ballroom is such an exquisite place of both architectural and acoustic beauty. What we envisioned was having the room come alive quite literally with the sound of music and be a place where students, faculty, and community could gather to make music, hear music, and enjoy it together. Today, there is a new generation of classical musicians, brilliantly trained, committed to the exploration of music, and redefining how we experience the art form. I am fortunate to know some of these extraordinary young artists and so the thought occurred to me: suppose we launched a project for these musicians to become part of our Ashley Hall community through a program of concerts, classes, and conversations. Amanda’s Endowment of Ashley Hall - In memor y of Amanda Welling Dykes • Provides annual grants to fund Amanda’s Academic Achievement Award, which is given to a rising 9th grade student who is in the top five of her class academically and respected by her teachers and peers for her outstanding character and unwavering dedication to all academic endeavors. Elizabeth Brown Scholarship - Given in memory of Elizabeth C. Brown ’72 • Assists with tuition throughout all grades. Barbara Pierce Bush Scholarship - In honor of Barbara Pierce Bush ’43 • Awarded for academic achievement to students new to Upper School.  Laura Carr Memorial Scholarship - In honor of Laura Carr ’96 • Given to a rising senior who exemplifies individuality, self-reliance, and strength of character.  The Marion and Wayland H. Cato, Jr. Scholarship - Awarded to a qualified student who demonstrates academic achievement and financial need.  The Kathryn L. and Wortham W. Dibble Scholarship - Allows Ashley Hall to recruit a diverse population of new students with need. The Lois Anderson Ganner Love of Reading Award - In honor of Lois Anderson Ganner ’67 • Awards a minimum of $200 annually to a seventh or eighth grade student of good character and academic standing who demonstrates a love for reading. Carmel Ann Goodstein Memorial Award - For a graduating senior who has distinguished herself through persistence and dedication to her work and who has consistently grown in achievement through the Upper School years.

Frené Haynes Award - In memory of Frené Haynes ’88 • Recognizes talent in the arts, especially among members of minority populations.  Baron and Dewar Holmes Enrichment Fund - Established to support professional development. The Dr. William H. Huger Trust Scholarship - Given in Memory of Arthur Postell Jervey • Awarded to students who demonstrate financial need, suitable scholarship, and admirable citizenship.  Barbara Ann Huguenin Memorial Scholarship - Awarded to a fifth grade student who lives up to her best and looks for the best in her peers.

“Helen and I decided some years ago to establish a scholarship at Ashley Hall in honor of my Mother, Katherine Adele Dunn Watson, and in recognition of her lifetime of devotion to the education of our country’s children. She taught for forty-five years in the public schools of Arizona, her native state, and of Hawaii, where she spent most of her adult life. During those years she taught many subjects in rural and urban schools, and in nearly all the grades from elementary through high school, though English and History were her first love. She was always keenly interested in Ashley Hall, and kept abreast of events there through her grandchildren when they were students, and through Helen during her many years on the faculty. So it was appropriate, we thought, to establish a scholarship which would, in its small way, help perpetuate the sort of quality education my Mother had worked so hard for so long to give her students. Over the years, we have had the pleasure of meeting most of the recipients of her scholarship, and we are certain she would have been well pleased -- as we have been -- to see what fine young women they are, and how they have made the most of their years at Ashley Hall.” -Helen ’58 and Lt. Rosemary Nelson Hutto Award for Teaching Excellence - In honor of Rosemary Nelson Hutto who taught Latin at Ashley Hall for many years • Awarded in recognition of teaching excellence in instructional skills, professional commitments, leadership skills, contributions and involvement beyond the classroom, and personal characteristics.

The Lois M. Ruggiero Endowed Scholarship - In honor of Lois M. Ruggiero • Awarded to qualified, newly-enrolling rising seventh, eighth, or ninth grade students who meet the academic requirements to attend Ashley Hall and follow all admissions procedures for enrollment. The scholarship is renewable each year until graduation.

The Patricia Trotter Kirkland Endowment for the Humanities Provides annual funding to support Humanities initiatives including but not limited to professional development for Humanities faculty, support for new curricular initiatives, sustaining existing programs and making possible a Humanities lecture series.

Caroline Pardue Scholarship - Awarded to an Intermediate or Upper School student exhibiting good citizenship.

Florida Kent Jervey Latin Award - In memory of a beloved teacher • Recognizes the highest grades in first-year Latin.

Laura Salmons Ragsdale Scholarship - In honor of Laura Salmons Ragsdale ’74 • Given to an Intermediate or Upper School student who has a special interest and talent in the arts, preferably music.

Lane Family Scholarship - Awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need and academic achievement.

The Daisy Barron Leland Award for Teaching - In honor of Daisy Barron Leland, who taught mathematics at Ashley Hall for 22 years • Awarded in recognition of teaching excellence in mathematics, science or the use of technology in the classroom. Margaret C. MacDonald Scholarship - Awarded to a student who demonstrates good citizenship and academic achievement.  Dana Mobley Award for Summer Enrichment Grants - In honor of Dana Mobley • Provides endowed support for summer professional enrichment annually. Project proposals may range from personal development to travel to curricular work by individuals or groups at Ashley Hall.  The Minority Scholarship - Awarded to academically gifted students in all grades. Martha Hamilton Morgan History Award - Awarded to a rising junior or senior who is interested in history. The Candace S. Orvin Palmer ‘65 Memorial Scholarship Given in memory of Candace S. Orvin Palmer ’65 • Awarded to a rising 9th, 10th, or 11th grade student who demonstrates financial need. The Countess Alicia Spaulding Paolozzi Leadership Endowment - Provides annual funding to enable Ashley Hall to develop new and sustain existing leadership programs for our students and community partners.

The Purple and White Scholarship - Provides financial aid for academically excellent students of diverse backgrounds in grades K-12.

Dorothy and Jack Rhodes Family Scholarship - Given to a qualified student new to independent schools during her high school years who demonstrates financial need.  The Littlest Angel Fund - In memory of Sallie Huguenin Smith Shisko • Awarded to a student in grade two through six who exemplifies the qualities of an Ashley Hall girl and requests financial aid. Constant Trust Scholarship - Established to assist diverse students or students with financial needs due to special circumstances and who meet the guidelines for financial aid.
