IMPACT ANNUAL REP ORT 2021

HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Friends, The unprecedented academic year of 2020-2021 tested each one of us, yet our students experienced phenomenal growth. They encountered a momentous turning point in their lives, and although we all experienced loss, what we gained has been so much more.

Your Impact on Ashley Hall Makes a Difference.

A willingness to put others before self, a call to exhibit compassion even in the face of challenging circumstances, a need to think innovatively when faced with impediments: we

Thanks to you, our gracious donors,

could not have asked for better life lessons in our Hallmarks and in becoming confident, resilient, and ethically responsible. Our students have truly lived and leaned into these experiences, and I could not be more proud of all they have accomplished.

over $1 million dollars in contributions were made to the

I am immensely grateful to all the members of Ashley Hall’s community for their sacrifices this year so that this important learning could take place. From our friends’ and families’ close partnership and trust to our dedicated teachers and staff making this school year possible, we vividly experienced the power each one of us has to make an impact. Thank you for your commitment to our School; it is a privilege to live in community with you.

would emphasize leadership, compassion, and teamwork. Thanks to some out-of-the-box thinking, they found the perfect opportunity for service: an Ashley Hall-sponsored neighborhood Blessing Box stocked with non-perishable food and supplies. Bringing in items to keep the box filled, students of all ages and faculty from all divisions have embraced this unique opportunity to make an impact in their local community.

The 1909 Society honors donors who annually give $1,909 or more to the Loyalty Fund and is open to the community. We thank the members of the 1909 Society for their leadership, philanthropic contributions, and continued commitment to Ashley Hall.

INTELLIGENT:

A Year of Growth Fourth graders ended their year-long study of the marsh with Lower School faculty member Beth McCarty by planting their Spartina plants in the Charleston harbor at Brittlebank Park. As part of the Seeds to Shoreline program, students learned about the importance of salt marsh ecosystems and actively impacted the restoration process — including harvesting, storing, germinating, cultivating, and planting Spartina along the coast. For students, the hands-on learning resulted in a deeper appreciation of the intricate Lowcountry ecosystems found in their own backyards. Their hard work will prevent future erosion along the bank for years to come.

WORLDLY:

Junior Experience This year’s Junior Experience posed the following question: How can you use design thinking and your gifts to develop innovative solutions to sustainability issues in Charleston? In addition to hearing from Mayor Tecklenburg and Director of Parks Jason Kronsberg and taking the water taxi for a site visit to Daniel Island, students experienced a deep dive into UN Sustainable Development Goals around water and land, with engaging virtual experiences with partners in Tanzania, Morocco, Belize, Costa Rica, and Maryland. They also took part in the World Leadership School’s Youth Purpose Summit before brainstorming and prototyping potential solutions to Charleston’s sustainability issues on land and sea. They will continue this impactful work throughout their senior year.

CREATIVE:

The Art of Discovery Students in Visual Arts faculty member Nancy Langston’s classes experienced a year of exploration and selfexpression, and their willingness to share their creativity culminated in their artwork being chosen for exhibition in this year’s Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Running May 28 through June 13 at the Circular Congregational Church, the Art of Discovery exhibit focused on the work of young artists and presented themes pertaining to self-discovery, mental health, and the struggles and triumphs one faces through life’s journey. Ashley Hall students exhibited more than seventy artworks, some of which also appeared on the Art of Discovery’s posters, banners, and directional signs.

Engineered for Fun!

40%

Second graders in Lower School faculty members Lee Tamblyn’s and Elizabeth Flowers’ classes used their solid engineering skills and planning ability to create something special for the entire school to use: an inviting playhouse on the playground hills!

Over the past six years, average scholarship and financial aid award amounts have increased by nearly 40 percent.

Constructed from repurposed pallets, the playhouse offered the perfect opportunity for students to learn about the construction process and apply their knowledge beyond the classroom. Through hands-on projects like this, girls become comfortable and confident using tools to make their plans a reality.

DISCERNING:

Our Future Scientists Did you know? Girls’ school grads on average report greater science self-confidence than their coeducated peers. From student-led explorations in the Early Education Center and a dedicated Science Lab in the Lower School to the Intermediate Program’s STEAM suite and the Upper School’s comprehensive and immersive curriculum, science at Ashley Hall is dynamic, hands-on, and fun! Across all divisions, girls take command in science labs, experiments, and investigations, building a foundation of confidence that will last a lifetime.

We are all part of the strong Ashley Hall community, and our connections with each other are a vital part of our shared experience during this time. Celebrating the many talents and endeavors of our community is not dependent upon a specific location or time frame but rather our ability to join together through the spirit of community. - HEAD OF SCHOOL JILL MUTI
