Jill Muti Ashley Hall Head of School Dear Friends, While this past academic year has presented extraordinary challenges, it also has allowed the true strength of the Ashley Hall community to shine through. When I think of the countless ways our students, teachers, parents, alumnae, and friends have joined together to support one another, I am filled with gratitude for the special place that is our School. Living out our Hallmarks, our students rose to the occasion and embodied the true meaning of our motto Possunt Quae Volunt: Girls who have the will have the ability.

OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT SUZIE SMITH Director of Institutional Advancement smiths@ashleyhall.org SHANA STOCKTON Director of Stewardship stocktons@ashleyhall.org STEPHANIE GLASSCOCK Director of the Loyalty Fund glasscocks@ashleyhall.org ANN BARNETT Director of Database Management and Online Services barnetta@ashleyhall.org

Indeed, during this time in our nation’s history, our mission to produce educated women who are independent, ethically responsible, and prepared to meet the challenges of society with confidence has never been more important. This period has presented our School with the opportunity to reflect upon what we value and imagine innovative new ways for our students to learn, grow, and meaningfully contribute. Living in community means being brave in our willingness to open our lives to new experiences while holding fast to what really matters, and the growth and resilience that I have witnessed in our community during this past year have made me incredibly proud. As we move forward into a new academic year filled with unknowns, the beautiful aspect that we all can treasure is that our mission and the heartfelt care in which we fulfill it will never change. Thank you for giving of yourself so fully to support our School. I am grateful to live in community with you. With Kind Regards,

THE LOYALTY

FUND The Annual Giving Campaign that Makes a Difference Each gift to the Ashley Hall Loyalty Fund provides the general operating budget with financial support that is used to buttress the School’s highest priorities. By matching their personal philanthropic preferences to the School’s operating budget this past year, friends

of Ashley Hall saw the impact of their generosity first-hand in a programmatic area that inspired them. These generous gifts enriched learning and achievement in academics, the arts, athletics, and areas of the School’s greatest need.

Academics

Gifts to this area reinforced the exceptional interdisciplinary academic curriculum at Ashley Hall dedicated to inquiry-based learning that prepares girls for the challenges of the future and supported professional development for faculty members.

Arts

Support to this area helped students to reach their greatest creative potential and expand their horizons. A gift to the arts supported each student’s creative expression and the development of her global mindset.

A thletics

In addition to championing the development of leadership skills as part of the School’s comprehensive athletics program, contributions to this area promoted sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, wellness, and a positive attitude in each Ashley Hall girl.

Area of Greatest Need

Donations to this area enabled the School to evaluate the needs of students and faculty with a degree of financial flexibility. Each gift reflected pride in the mission and traditions of Ashley Hall and its commitment to fostering a culture of community on campus and beyond.

ROLE MODELS:

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day BY JENNIFER TURNER, EDITOR & INSTITUTIONAL WRITER

Girls’ school graduates are three times more likely to consider careers in engineering, and in honor of “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” in February, Upper School students had the opportunity to interact with professionals representing ten federal agencies: the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, VA Medical Center, Naval Health Clinic, National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Naval Information Warfare Center. Students enjoyed engaging with hands-on STEM projects, including problem solving an oil spill disaster, designing freestanding structures and nuclear fission models, and calculating helicopter weight loads. “I like that we get to learn about so many organizations and complete fun activities,” said Parker Gragg ’25. “It’s exciting that they’ve come here today.” Lt. Col. Rachel Honderd, Commander of the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District, opened the morning by highlighting the power created when girls engage in STEM. “We are here to inspire you in STEM and show some of the amazing opportunities that are out there,” she said. “It’s so important for you to experience this, because you are the future of our nation.” During the sessions, Photo by Kelly Grace Photography students explored future careers and met female role models, who fielded questions about their educational paths and daily lives. “This school is amazing for having such a strong community, and you experience a close-knit camaraderie that we also have in the military,” said Maj. Kayla L. Hill, Executive Officer of the 437th Airlift Wing. “If you meet a female aviator, then you begin to think, ‘If she can do it, I can too.’” That was the sentiment for many of Ashley Hall’s Upper School students. “It’s nice to learn about things that you don’t typically think about,” said Alexandria Vicente ’25. “I’m inspired by these women and their careers.”

THE PERFECT FIT:

Individualized Learning in the Lower School BY JENNIFER TURNER, EDITOR & INSTITUTIONAL WRITER

Empowering the individual is a core value at Ashley Hall, and in the Lower School, learning is tailored to help each student flourish. From small groups to dynamic technology, lessons are built around supporting student autonomy and voice. Throughout the school day, faculty members gather small groups and use a supportive, personalized approach to help students gain confidence in material. “Small groups have specific instruction to meet each girl’s needs, both academically and socially,” noted faculty member Lee Tamblyn. “They give each girl an opportunity to voice her opinions and concerns in a smaller environment and allow her to ask questions without judgement from her peers who may already know the answer.” For example, for second grade reading and writing assignments, teachers analyze weekly quiz results to determine the upcoming week’s focus for small groups. That ability to adapt quickly to students’ needs makes individualized learning possible. Similarly, Lower School teachers introduced two self-paced initiatives for math instruction during the 2019-2020 school year: student playlists (a sequence of activities personalized for each student) and Redbird (a computer math program used alongside the Everyday Mathematics curriculum). “With playlists, students get to choose their path and monitor their activity completion while teachers are able to shift their direct instruction time from whole group to small group and really target student levels,” said Director of Innovation Ed Dougherty. “The overarching goal is to create a more personalized approach to instruction while differentiating curriculum and activities using data mastery charts.” Engaging students with fun challenges and problems, the Redbird program measures comprehension and adapts to both reinforce concepts and keep students moving forward. “Our teachers can access students’ accounts to see progress and run reports to assess growth and areas of concern,” explained Lower School Math Specialist Suzanne Saunders. For each Lower School student, that priceless insight helps make her educational experience the perfect fit.

GOING THE DISTANCE: Distance Learning Success Stories BY JENNIFER TURNER, EDITOR & INSTITUTIONAL WRITER

In response to this past spring’s government mandates and health agency recommendations, Ashley Hall transferred to a distance learning model to finish the school year. While challenging and unprecedented, the endeavor revealed the resilience of Ashley Hall’s students and faculty members to rise to the occasion in some remarkable ways.

The Personal Touch: The Early Education Center For Early Education Center (EEC) children, their teachers are some of their closest friends, so the special time each week when they get to video chat one-on-one is nothing short of magical. “As soon as Ms. Dooling or I say anything familiar from our routine in the classroom, the biggest smile comes across each child’s face,” said faculty member Amy Kuenzel, who begins her sessions with a favorite song. “In the middle of our call, we play new math or language arts games that children can emulate at home and review items from our yearly objectives that are tailored to each child.” Each session is structured to make the most of the interaction while also allowing room for spontaneous fun! “In thinking about the development of young children, I considered what would make them want to stay and engage,” noted faculty member Elizabeth Johnson, who approaches each of her sessions like a mini one-on-one morning circle and uses mystery bags for children to select which games

Photo provided

to play. That careful attention to detail is part of enriching these meaningful interactions. “The children feel a sense of self-worth and pride in working with us,” continued Johnson. “They are able to show off their skills and knowledge in a way that many of our parents have never seen before which provides them with a tiny glimpse into the classroom experience.”

Having a (Virtual) Field Day: The Lower School Field Day is a highly anticipated spring event for fourth graders, who serve as team captains, and Ashley Hall’s physical education teachers were not about to let the fun pass their students by! Splitting the class into five color teams, they crafted a virtual Field Day with some creative home challenges that the girls could video record and share! To fire up everyone’s school pride, the teachers and Lower School Director Polly Kronsberg also visited each girl for a surprise personal pep rally. “It was so nice of them to go to everyone’s house, and it made me feel special,” said Hazel Smith ’28.

With creative races, jumping and dancing activities, and an obstacle course, the Field Day challenges offered spirited fun for the entire family. “I love that we got dressed all in red, even with face paint, and that Clara (’26) and my mom did the relays with me, with even our dog Sebastian dressed in red!” exclaimed Mariana Blair ’28. “To say we were thrilled is an understatement!” agreed faculty member Holly Blair. “The loud cheering through the megaphone exhilarated our spirits and spread warmth that we are indeed not alone during this crazy time.”

Have Chromebook, Will Travel: The Intermediate Program Knowing sixth graders have eagerly looked forward to their spring D.C. trip, Intermediate Program (IP) faculty members were determined to recreate the experience, and in the process, discovered new ways to enrich their learning goals. “The IP team of teachers who put this together showed innovation, creativity, and collaboration,” noted IP Program Coordinator Mary Schweers. “When we began this journey of distance learning, we were really able to embrace it largely due to the design and purpose of the IP building around technology, the daily Chromebook use for both grades, students’ daily familiarity with various learning platforms, and teachers indefatigable desire to keep the curriculum interesting and engaging.” With each faculty member posing an essential question, students explored the

virtual worlds of the same D.C. museums and monuments they would have visited in person. They also found ways to have some fun, such as dressing as tourists and walking outside the same number of steps as they would have in D.C. Most importantly, students were able to gain valuable insight from significant cultural, educational, and historic sites. Ingraining such knowledge and understanding has always been the priority. “Being able to create a virtual trip enabled us to give our students the best experience that we could,” said faculty member Kelly Brinson. “While we can’t recreate the excitement of being away from home, we can bring the museums, monuments, and exhibits to them through this special virtual experience.”

Fresh Catch: The Upper School To best help her Marine Biology students continue their study of Chordates and Fish, faculty member Meghan Ward replicated her planned classroom lesson: a dissection. “The girls dissected sharks prior to the start of distance learning, and then I posted videos showing me doing the rest of the dissection,” noted Ward. “Today’s lesson was on bony fish, class Osteichthyes. It was so nice to be able to show the girls via Zoom the parts of the fish. Even if they were not getting their hands dirty, I think they appreciated getting to see what we were learning about.” Logging in from their home study spaces, students created their

own sketches as Ward talked. “Meeting as a class, even if it is online, helps to maintain the Ashley Hall community, as well as model more of a normal classroom environment,” Wickie Fort ’21 pointed out. “Mrs. Ward’s virtual dissection gave us the opportunity to ask her and each other questions if we were confused. Being together in our class helps things to feel more normal, and Mrs. Ward is so positive and inspirational!” Ward echoed her students’ enthusiasm. “Collaborating with the girls gives them a chance to ask questions and feel more connected to the learning,” she emphasized.

THE HEART OF WELLNESS: THE NEW STUDENT LIFE CENTER BY JENNIFER TURNER, EDITOR & INSTITUTIONAL WRITER

This summer’s transformation of Lane Hall into the new Student Life Center has created a campus hub for Ashley Hall’s already robust signature programming in wellness, college counseling, and student life. “We know that in order for true learning to occur and to have a healthy campus life overall, it is vital to address the mental health and the social/emotional needs of our students,” said Upper School Counselor Katie Neighbours. “Having a space dedicated to these needs prioritizes these important aspects of student life.” Offering 6,000 square feet of repurposed space, the building features a wellness classroom, movement studio, student leadership space, study rooms, administrator and counseling offices, communal areas, and a café. “This is a central place for information, sustenance, and support,” noted Director of Student Affairs Carrie Singh. “Our hope is for the space to foster a sense of belonging for all our students that allows them to feel both cared for and independent and that gives them the tools they need to flourish and become the best version of themselves.” Oriented toward ninth through twelfth graders, the Student Life Center will prioritize opportunities for mentoring and relationship building. “It is a space to nurture mind, body, and spirit, brought to life by a group of professionals who are dedicated to meeting people where they are and helping them to evolve as learners, leaders, friends, and human beings living in community,” emphasized Dean of Students Kelly Sumner. “I hope it will be a soft place to land during difficult times, a safe place to gather and share, and an inclusive space to rest, reflect, and recharge.” The center is also where students make plans for their future. “We are better able help our girls understand that the development of all aspects of their lives will best direct them in their college choices,” said Director of College Counseling Amanda Murrell. “The Student Life Center will encourage conversations that explore how all aspects of our lives are intertwined.”

OPENING SOON

This project enclosed the Lower School’s atrium space with an elegant glass roof and added acoustical enhancement as well as new atrium flooring and furniture to increase the functionality of this collaborative space.

A beautifully renovated historic property located directly across Smith Street, Warren Street House is the Upper School’s new humanities hub for the study of classics, foreign languages, and history. The building also features a new Admission Office suite.

With an emphasis on studentdirected learning and hands-on experiences, this renovated academic space includes an 1,800 square foot STEAM suite, a fabrication design lab with 3D printers, new outdoor learning spaces, and flexible furniture.

This project will expand the number of science laboratories on the third floor of Jenkins Hall.

THE McBEE

Bequests and other planned gifts have a lasting impact on Ashley Hall and serve as a continuing source of support. By including Ashley Hall in their estate plans, supporters ensure that the tradition of an Ashley Hall education continues for another century. Estate gifts can be designated to support an individual’s passion at the School but are most commonly invested to grow the School’s endowment in perpetuity. Ashley Hall’s founder, Mary Vardrine McBee, exemplified and championed the merits found in a life of value-based philanthropy. Today, she is the patroness of The McBee Society, an organization of foresighted and generous donors who have included Ashley Hall in their estate plans. This list represents past and present McBee Society members, those who have shared or fulfilled their intentions to support Ashley Hall with an estate gift. We thank these devoted members for their transformational gift.

It is important to introduce children at an early age to a healthy environment where they can learn to become successful, confident leaders. Ashley Hall has provided such an environment to our daughter Adya, who has learned to decide for herself while also being compassionate and patient. At Ashley Hall, she is truly growing into her best self.
