Our Mission

From our founding more than 100 years ago, Ashley Hall has championed its original mission: To produce educated women who are independent, ethically responsible, and prepared to meet the challenges of society with confidence. Today this mission continues to guide the school’s curricula and teaching philosophy, inspiring both Ashley Hall faculty and students to engage in a vibrant, independent, educational community.

Dear Ashley Hall Community,

he 2012–2013 academic year was significant for our

Ashley Hall community. Probably the most exciting thing to happen is we expanded our campus footprint by approximately 10 percent with the acquisition of The Rutledge House for Global Studies at 179 Rutledge Avenue and the three city lots that this beautiful structure

sits on. Our new building will house our international students and the main floor will be used for Upper School humanities electives and feature a Harkness classroom and two Oxford-style classrooms. The building will open next fall. Bricks and mortar are important, but the primary mission of Ashley Hall is to educate women who will be the successful leaders of the future. Our students have again distinguished themselves aca-

demically, athletically and artistically, as each individual girl strives to reach her full potential—honing her own unique talents. As an example of how successful the girls were last year, members of the graduating class were accepted at many of our nation’s most prestigious universities. While doing

so, they collectively amassed $3 million in scholarship offers to universities across the country. Among the many accolades of the class of 2013, a student was awarded the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Program Services 72%

Of course, the girls do not learn alone, and we are fortunate to have an energetic, dedicated faculty who love to teach. This commitment to learning is contagious and our faculty continuously furthers its professional growth with a robust faculty development program. Ashley Hall’s extraordinary faculty has been tireless in formulating curriculum—creative arts and athletic programs among others—that foster

individual achievement. Under the dynamic leadership of Head of School Jill Muti, Ashley Hall has been innovative in program development and has become a leader among independent schools in our nation. The future looks brighter than ever for Ashley Hall due to the fact that we have developed a critically important culture of philanthropy: The entire Ashley Hall community raised over $3 million during 2012–2013 for our school. I thank those of you who made this possible.

International Studies Program Initiative

I

n December of 2012, a campaign

to raise $4.5 million to support the growth and development of Ashley Hall’s International Studies Program began. In Phase One of the campaign, Ashley

Hall’s Board of Trustees and other donors generously gave nearly $2 million to purchase The Rutledge House for Global Studies, a property adjacent to campus that will provide Upper School humanities classroom space, a home for international boarding students and their resident advisors, and

increase Ashley Hall’s total campus footprint by 10%. Phase Two of the campaign began in July of 2013 with the goal of raising $2.5 million to support the International Studies Program and provide funding to allow the school to meet three critical needs: •

To create a restricted fund to maintain the property

To support curricular initiatives within the International Studies

Program including faculty professional development and

student travel

To renovate and repurpose the newly acquired property

into classroom and boarding facilities In the 12 months since the campaign began, the generous donors

listed (right) have committed $2,400,000 toward our $4.5 million goal. Supporting the renovation of The Rutledge House for Global Studies and Ashley Hall’s International Studies Program provides a unique opportunity for alumnae, parents and friends to continue their legacy by shaping the future of Ashley Hall, this community and the world. Naming opportunities are available. Please contact Catherine Newman, Director of Institutional Advancement at newmanc@ashleyhall.org or 843-7202886 to learn more about the legacy opportunities available through this initiative. For more information on The Rutledge House visit www. ashleyhall.org.

Ashley Hall’s commitment to academic development in its students is stellar, however, the school’s additional focus on recognizing and developing each student’s unique strengths and characteristics—social, spiritual, physical, artistic, philanthropic, etc.—educates the whole girl and helps her find her voice and place in the world. This individual attention gives them the confidence in their moral compass to respond to challenges they face and the self awareness to lead fulfilling lives of worth. In addition, the school’s commitment to accessibility for its parents allows me to fully participate as a member of this wonderful community. That is why I choose to make Ashley Hall a philanthropic priority. –H. Del Schutte, Jr., father of Maddie Schutte

The 1909 Society

The 1909 Society, Ashley Hall’s oldest giving society, honors donors who annually give $1,909 or more to the Loyalty Fund. The 1909 Society, founded in 1984 to mark the 75th Anniversary of Ashley Hall, is open to the community and offers special benefits. Gifts from this leadership giving group comprise approximately 70% of all dollars given to the Loyalty Fund. We thank the members of The 1909 Society for their leadership, philanthropic contributions and continued commitment to Ashley Hall.

For years, families and friends of Ashley Hall have helped financially to build the school into the unique and exceptional learning institution it is today. Our daughter is a current beneficiary of that past generosity. We feel privileged to be able to be participants in carrying on this tradition of support, helping to ensure that Ashley Hall will be able to continue to offer wonderful educational and growth opportunities for young women for many years to come. -Hiroko Yanagida and Fred Baker, parents of Midori Baker ‘20

Generations of Giving

Ashley Hall alumnae are an integral part of the culture of philanthropy that resonates on the campus. From generation to generation they have demonstrated their commitment to the school, and each alumna has her own story and special reason for her support. We thank all of the alumnae who have given back to ensure this tradition continues for decades to come.

1934 “Ashley Hall gave me a good education and sound preparation for college. Today, it gives girls a superb preparation for life in this complex global economy.” –Elizabeth (Libby) S. Williams ‘34 1948

“I attended both Ashley Hall and a public co-ed high school. Although the co-ed high school had some fun times, there was a spirit at Ashley Hall that was different. I was happy to be able to send both our daughters to Ashley Hall for their entire pre-college schooling, and eventually to have four “12 year” granddaughters. I am so glad that the school has remained an all girls school and do agree that they are champions in every way! Therefore I will continue to support Ashley Hall for the coming generations of champions.” -Joan Hutcheson Poulnot ’48

1951 “It must be in my blood! From my aunt, who was in one of the early classes, to my own happy and rewarding years there and my father’s 33 years on the Board, to my daughter and two granddaughters, all of whom were 12 year girls—I have had a long time to watch the growth of a top quality educational institution grow from great, to greater, to greatest!” –Patience (Penny) Davies Walker ’51 1963

“I love Ashley Hall because of the wonderful education which allowed me to expand my horizons to do anything I wanted to do and the courage to follow my dreams. The special bond we all have with the school and the lifelong friendships we forged while being there is so special.” –Beautsie Robertson Zahrn ’63

1973

“I will forever feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to attend Ashley Hall for 12 years. As an alumna, I donate to the Loyalty Fund to give back to the school that molded me into the woman I am today and to ensure that bright young women will always be able to attend this remarkable institution and reap the benefits of all Ashley Hall has to offer.” –Melaina Clement Pate ’73

1989 “I love Ashley Hall even more now than when I attended. Being a member of the Alumnae Association Board is a great way to give back to a school that is so dear to my heart and has given me so much! It gives me an opportunity to work with old friends and meet new ones who are part of the sisterhood.” –Elisabeth (EB) Burtschy Ravenel ’89 1990 “Ashley Hall has provided my children with an environment in which they can grow as leaders while also nurturing their creative endeavors. It is a special place for children to learn and we feel blessed to have our children there.” –Jena Purser Waldorf ’90 2002 “I love Ashley Hall for the sense of community it fosters both during and following my time as a student here. I feel a sense of responsibility to give back to the community that’s given me so much.” –Molly B. Waring ’02

Hugh C. Lane, Jr., much like Mary Vardrine McBee, exemplifies the merits and joy found in a life of philanthropy, and embraces the truth that our philanthropic actions communicate who we are, why we are alive and what we believe on the deepest level. This fundamental tenet has created a powerful and lasting legacy for generations of young women and has changed the trajectory of thousands of lives. On Thursday, January 17, 2013 in front of Hugh’s family, friends and colleagues, we gratefully thanked him for his commitment to education and dedicated support of Ashley Hall. It was with honor that Ashley Hall presented Hugh C. Lane, Jr. with the inaugural Mary Vardrine McBee Philanthropy Award.
