DELTA | INTEGRATIVE ORGANISM OF RIJEKA

Nestled at the heart of Rijeka, standing tall along the city’s scenic shoreline, is an architectural approach that seeks to redefine urban dynamism and foster the integration of diverse communities. The project, conceptually characterized by urban elements: streets and squares, aims to create a vibrant atmosphere that interconnects through the city while offering a unique experience to its visitors. At the core of this concept: sequence of experiences that weaves its way from the industrial part of the city, following the traces of the old railway, and seamlessly converges into the building itself. This intriguing pathway also extends beyond the structure, flowing into the extension of the marina, symbolizing the integration of various elements within the urban fabric. While extending horizontally, it has the reflection on the surrounding promenade that leads people through experiences vertically. As visitors enter the building, the journey transforms into a promenade, encircling the structure and linking it with the main public spaces

The promenade, much like the intricate network of streets within a city, signifies the interconnectedness of the urban landscape. The public spaces within the building, resembling interconnected squares, further contribute to this city-within-a-city concept, providing a dynamic environment for social interactions and community engagement. With a balanced blend of formal and informal spaces, the building encapsulates a harmonious fusion of diversity. Approximately 52% of the

total area is dedicated to formal spaces and 48% is dedicated to informal spaces, where individuals can gather, relax, and foster a sense of community. Main programs of the building are 1380m food court, 3800m² cultural spaces, and 5200m² areas designed for sports activities. The ground floor of the building is divided into two distinct areas, catering to different interests and aspirations. One area is dedicated to sports, offering public sport area where local people can also participate. The other section contains cultural spaces, providing a platform for artistic expression and creativity by having art studios, exhibition areas and conference room. PROJECT INFO Gross total area: 20.100sqm Maximum Height: 82 m Programme: : Culture and sport Hub (Sports areas include basketball, volleyball, badminton courts, table tennis, swimming, a dance hall climbing wall, and a gym. Permanent and temporary exhibition halls, conference-seminar areas, an auditorium and library are divided according to users such as individuals, groups and children.) Furthermore, the building features three main entrances, two of which are situated on the ground floor one for culture and other one for sport area, while the third entrance eventually located on the first floor, provides access to an elevated open space seamlessly integrated with a designed artificial topography, inviting visitors to embark on a journey towards the sea. The topography has nested sport areas for the ground floor spaces, providing light and visual interconnection. In summary, the project stands to enhance the dynamism and integration of a city through the sky. The promenade concept, reminiscent of Rijeka’s street network, and its interconnected public spaces resembling bustling squares, the building becomes a vibrant hub for community engagement. With a carefully balanced mix of formal and informal spaces, this project offers a diverse range of amenities and experiences, ensuring that it becomes a centerpiece of the city’s shoreline landscape FINAL REVIEW URBAN DESIGN AND URBAN IDENTITY OF THE BUILDING Professors: Pierre-Alain CROSET Leonardo ZUCCARO MARCHI Luca CAPACCI Collaborators: Alberto GEUNA Amir ADELFAR Francesca DIANO, Maria Chiara GIANGREGORIO MSc in Architecture and Urban Design, A.Y. 2022-2023, Semester 2 ADS RIJEKA 2023 A post-pandemic cultural and sports hub in Rijeka GROUP N . 5.2 Students: Beste Altun Ardacan Özvanlıgil 1

Elderly people wish to enter the building through the cultural area entrance on the ground floor. They come across a bridge that connects to the old building, which hosts various exhibitions. They enter the lobby and discover several exhibitions displayed with the help of division walls. They also notice people enjoying their lunch in the restaurant. They decide to proceed to the auditorium foyer and obtain their tickets after taking a moment to rest in the seating areas. Once the elderly people have their tickets, they venture into the internal space between the auditorium and the public area. They observe a seminar taking place above and decide to grab some coffee from the bar while waiting for the performance in the auditorium. While their parents wait for their children at the entrance of the floor, the kids join in playful activities in the dedicated kids’ space. Young people, coming from the transformed urban path of the old railway, opt to enter the building via the sloping ramp leading to the first floor. Before going for a swim, they decide to play badminton while enjoying the framed landscape of Rijeka. During the game, they notice people resting near the swimming pool on the upper floor. After their game, they change their clothes and go swimming while watching the city landscape. During lunchtime, they choose to go to the upper floors to eat and play table tennis, all the while observing people climbing on the climbing wall. The family rests on the stairs, enjoying the view of the marina while observing people walking on the elevated first floor. While their father reads journals in the library, his kids head to the climbing wall for some adventure. YOUNG PEOPLE
